Techniques for rapid analysis of a house

Last Updated on August 13, 2024 by Tejaswini

If you get a question related to just one house you can do a quick analysis like this,

  • First check the house in question.
  • And then the trikon 1/9/5 axis from it. The 9th from any house is its past and the 5th from any house is its future.
  • And finally the Kendras 1/4/7/10 houses from any house are its pillars.

This much will give you sufficient information that you will be able to answer the question with reasonable confidence.

Eg. a rapid analysis for happiness in marriage.

Open the D1, the basic birth chart and see what you can get from just this one chart.

For the current age the 7th house is the main house for marriage so first is to determine its power to give auspicious results. (Earlier in a more Dharmic age, the Dharmasthan, 9th was given equal importance.)

  • The owner of this house, his position, and the influences on him.
  • The planets in it and aspecting it, the auspicious or inauspicious influences.
  • Always pay attention to the functional malefics for the chart. They are the real sources of trouble even if they are gentle planets, eg Cancer ascendant – Sagittarius is in the 6th house, it is owned by Jupiter and is his mooltrikon making Jupiter a malefic for Cancer ascendant. Even though he owns the Dharmasthan at 9th Pisces, the mooltrikon is the dominating influence. Never underestimate the power of the chart specific malefics to cause trouble. If they are directly influencing the 7th in any way they will reduce the auspiciousness of the marriage.
  • Also look for support from the ascendant lord and the Yogkarak planet. Eg For Taurus and Libra ascendants, yogkarak Saturn is overall more auspicious than Jupiter. Sometimes Rahu and Ketu can also function as yogkarak. And any other chart specific benefics who can help the 7th in any way.

Then check the 3rd house (ninth house from the 7th), the sign, the planets occupying it, the owner and the associated influences. All this will give you an idea on the quantum of your past merit / poorvapunya is available for powering the marriage. Also the 3rd house will give you pointers on the nature of the events, energy, situation, the people around, your personal efforts in this direction etc all that which is subtly pushing you to get married.

  • Eg 6th lord in the 3rd house, can mean that you might think marriage to be an extra effort for you or want a spouse who is more of a servant rather than an equal partner or think of the prospective spouse as an enemy.
  • Eg 10th lord in the 3rd can mean that your father is the one who is most active in finding an alliance for you. Or that you want the prospective partner to be from a similar social/ professional etc status as yours.
  • Eg Moon in the 3rd, can mean that you are looking for a prospective alliance through your mother or in the maternal side of your family. Or that your mother is the moving force in getting a marriage alliance for you. Or that your main motivation for getting married is ‘need’ or ‘security’ in some form.
  • Eg 3rd lord in the 11th can mean that you might marry someone in your friend circle.

Malefic influences on the 3rd house can also indicate a marriage under false pretences or an inauspicious match. When analysing the 3rd house do keep its basics in mind. eg it is a typical house (post here) or that the 3rd is the maran karak sthan for Jupiter so if he is in the 3rd he may hinder than help in the marriage.

Interestingly the 3rd is placed seventh from the 9th house, the house of poorvapunya/ merits. And for a question related to marriage, the 9th is also analysed to see if your spouse will help you travel the right path of Dharma or not. ie, if you have malefic planets in the 3rd, your quest for a marriage partner might drain your 9th house. Or the prospective spouse may not support your Dharmic activities or might cause trouble with the elders in the family etc. And benefic influences on the 3rd or the 3rd lord will ensure that you get a marriage partner who is an actual auspicious Dharmapati or Dharmapatni, who will also add to your luck.

Then check the 11th house. This will give you information on the direction that this marriage will take in the future. Favourable planets, Lagnesh, yogakarak, Kendra or Kona lords in the 11th indicate an auspicious, long lasting and favourable marriage. Benefics /malefics vary as per the ascendant sign so be careful here.

Remember that the 11th is a upchay house, ie its results will improve with age if the rest of the chart is supportive and if there are at least some benefic influence on the 11th house. In case the 11th has only malefics and is not supported by benefics then this will decrease the auspiciousness of the marriage as time goes by.

The 5th house opposite to the 11th is the house of creativity which includes children.  Favourable planets in the 11th support the birth of auspicious children who then add even more positivity to the marriage. A weak 11th indicates future unhappiness in the marriage, extramarital affairs, issues related to childbirth, and all the issues connected to the partnership which the drain your personal happiness and become a burden for your soul.

Now to check the material aspects of the question. the kendra houses, the four houses, 1/4/7/10, counted from the house in question. For our marriage question, these are respectively the 7/10/1/4 houses. Kendra counted from the house in question give the physical / material aspects.

  • the 7th house, ie the main house in question, is a summary of the marriage and everything connected to it.. The analysis is the same as what we did above.
  • the 10th house (house counted fourth from the house in question) indicates if you will get all the material things which you need for, during and after the marriage event. This includes the quality of the residence, support from your close family, culture, traditions etc. Use this house to see if your material needs related to the marriage will be satisfied in your life.
  • the 1st house (house counted seventh from the house in question) indicates how the partnership between you and your spouse will unfold. Will it be equitable, pleasant, will your business and other sources of income rise to meet the new commitments etc.
  • the 4th house (house counted tenth from the house in question) indicates the material structure, social aspects, support from your family etc connected with the marriage. How you, as a couple/family, are supported by your society, your salary, your profession etc.

This above analysis will take about 15mins of your time and give a reasonably accurate overview of the question asked. This quick analysis can be applied to the birth chart or the transit chart or the prashna chart.

    Namaskaram ma’m,
Last time when I read one of your article on april solar eclipse, there was a mention of bad phase for virgo (my moon sign) & aquarius (ascendant), such as “Past decisions/ mistakes will haunt you during this time frame.” when I read this 2 months before, a haunting memory got reminded and right now that nightmare has turned into my reality and I am suffering it and unable to escape. Also, whenever I plan to start my dhyan or take up devi mantra seriously, such turmoil situation happens repeatedly and my mind literally goes mad and had to drop my dhyanam as I started to overthink that I might be cursed/not right person for doing it. I am unable to overcome these and I fear to use mantras.
Will a person be cursed/ restricted/punished to use mantras due to any past/present karma – that one has not knowingly done anything wrong. Or do you have a different opinion on this. I am sorry if all of these sound stupid, but I am in such a bad hopeless state. Kindly give me some advice.

        Dear Ma’am

I have been advised to not chant mantras at home. This advice came at a time when I was doing Sri Suktam daily from the April Navratri. Except Sri Suktam is itself a mantra, as you’ve written. Since then, I only light a lamp, offer Pranam to deities at home and visit the nearby temple. Mantras in temples is fine. I wanted to ask you about what makes something a mantra? How do we distinguish it? I do want to chant something at home but don’t want to fall foul of this advice. Thank you for all your help.

    Namaskaram ma’m,
How should one analyse the dushamsthan lords/houses (6,8,12) when they exchange their own houses fully/ partially. Eg.: if 6th house lord in 8th house and 8th house lord in 12th house and 12th house lord in 6th house. Are they still malefic or do they reduce the negative effect and gives some positive result ..
