For a chart, the Kendra houses, 1 4 7 10, are the pillars in charge of the material stuff.
- 1st – the self, the actual personality, the environment around you etc
- 4th – the homeland, the actual home, residence, the mother, deep rest, land, property, overall ‘needs’ in life etc
- 7th – legal partnerships, spouse, money from businesses, self love
- 10th – profession, father, boss, salary, social image etc
And the Dharma trikon also called the Kona houses provide the positive energy feedback loop. They provide energy which the personality needs to function properly.
- 1st – energy of the self, actual personality, environment around etc
- 5th – creative intelligence, connection with the higher Self etc
- 9th – luck, merits from past lives, blessings

The ascendant lord, owns the 1st house which is simultaneously a Kendra and Kona, thus he becomes the most powerful benefic of the chart. He grants material success and also contributes to the positive energy of the personality/ surrounding environment. The exact degree which was rising at your birth is called Lagna, which is also called Kaal/ Time. And the ruler of this sign is called the Lagnesh, ‘Lord of Time’.
Any other planet who simultaneously owns a Kendra and Kona house is called the Yogkarak. The Yogkarak is capable of giving very highly auspicious results as he simultaneously owns one of the 4th 7th 10th houses and one of the 5th or 9th houses. And this is possible for the horoscopes with the following six ascendent signs.
- For Taurus and Libra ascendants the Yogkarak is Saturn
- For Cancer and Leo ascendants the Yogkarak is Mars
- For Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants the Yogkarak is Venus
If you look at these three planets, they are not your typical saumya/ gentle planets. Saturn and Mars are clearly cruel/ kroor graha. And Venus though apparently a saumya graha/ gentle planet, internally he is a very strict and no nonsense teacher and quite capable of poisoning advantages he offers. And these rather unlikely planets are the greatest benefics for these specific ascendant signs.
As with any other planet, the Lagnesh and the Yogkarak graha require suitable environments to deliver their promised auspicious results. In case they are exalted, in signs owned by natural or conditional friends, aspected by functional benefics, in favourable Navamsha, in favourable amsha of the other divisional charts, have good strength as per the Shadbala, Vimshopaka bala etc concepts, etc then they are capable of giving good and auspicious results.
If the Lagnesh or the Yogkarak are afflicted in any way then the quality of the chart goes down. Such people rarely become successful in material life. ‘Affliction’ means, being debilitated, or in the sign of an enemy planet, or in the Dusham sthan ie the 6th 8th 12th, or in the Maran karak sthan for that planet or conjunct/ aspected by functional malefics for that ascendant sign or having a high Kashta phala, low strength as per the Vimshopak/ Shadbala concepts etc. Now, in every chart you see, every planet will have at least one of these above conditions and thus none of us lives a perfect life. But as a thumb rule, if you see at least 3 of the above affliction patterns for a planet, then the planet should be considered to be severely afflicted. This is your judgement which you will earn after learning and practicing Jyotish.

If the Lagnesh is not capable of auspicious results then the entire personality, the environment in which you operate, the interactions of the personality with the surrounding environment etc, everything is pulled down. The overall quality of the chart becomes below average. This indicates a dull personality, unmotivated, no drive to accomplish anything in life, who fails to grasp at opportunities in life. The environment he lives in too is similarly dull and with little scope for improvement.
For those ascendant charts who have a Yogkarak planet, any damage to the Yogkarak, will cause severe malefic effects on the person. The Yogkarak is the owner of a Kendra and a Kona (either 5th or 9th) house, so if he is weak, debilitated, combust, under additional malefic influences etc, he negatively influences two critical houses of the chart which has a negative impact on the entire personality.
The kendra house is more a material manifestation and the kona is more the energy. Depending on which kendra house is affected, ie 4, 7 or 10 you can predict issues with the keywords of these houses, ie residence, mother, land, partner, business, father, profession, money etc. And these issues will occur but they might be a lifetime thing if the damage is high or they may be restricted to the trigger dasha/ transit. Evaluate this carefully, do not needlessly scare the client.
Of the two kona houses, if such a damaged yogkarak owns the 5th house, the intelligence and thought processes are afflicted. The self-love that a person has for himself, the personal connect with the internal divinity is damaged and this subtly spreads out on the personality and the environment that he operates in. Marriage, love affairs, children, gains, etc can become problematic. Investments especially risky speculation, stock market can backfire. The person is self centred, has a core of ego, selfishness and is often in some way a cheat. Students or anyone whom he considers as his junior can prove unworthy. And if the damaged yogkarak owns the 9th, the person never gets the necessary foundations required for a fulfilling life. As per our Sanatan Dharma of which Jyotish is very much a part, marriage is a Dharma, the spouse is a Dharmapati/Dharmapatni and thus a afflicted 9th lord causes tension in marriage, children and all the relationships which are created by the marriage. Also the elders, parents, teacher, may misguide. The person who is revered as a teacher/ guru may not be genuine. The thought processes are vitiated and again the person takes up adharmic actions thinking that these are the right path.
The effect of the damaged Lagnesh or Yogkarak on the Kona houses, 1, 5, 9 always has to be analysed in depth, as they have a subtle and pervasive impact on the personality.
And as usual, the two remedies are Mantra and Daana which is the job of the Jyotishi to prescribe (index page).

The crux of this post is this, if you observe that the horoscope has a severely afflicted one kendra house/lord and one kona house/lord then the personality is hampered in some way or the other. Material success is going to be limited but there could be a possibility for spiritual growth depending on other combinations in the horoscope.
