Daana as an astrological remedy

Of all the remedies which are in vogue today, there are only two prescribed by Maharishi Parashar. Mantra and Daana दान. (I have written several posts on mantra., if you wish to read, do use the index page)

Daana in the physical sense is giving away of certain objects to temples, deities, Brahmins, or in running water/sea. What to give in Daana? I have written this post on the things connected to the planets which are generally offered as Daana.

When to give Daana? The day which is linked to the planet/ graha is generally prescribed eg Sunday for the Sun and so on. In addition to this, you can do Daana on these following auspicious days.

www.psychologicallyastrology.comwwww

The first day of Ayana. These are the two solstices, ie the start of the Dakshinayna or the Uttarayan, ie the apparent northwards or southwards movement of the Sun. Here there is a confusion. Popularly Uttarayan is associated with Makar Sankranti these days (there is a very detailed reason for this, which would involve too much math, so not going into this). The Uttarayan technically starts on the day when the length of the day time Din-maana starts increasing and the length of the night time Ratri-maana starts decreasing in the north hemisphere. This happens one day after the winter solstice, ie on 22nd Dec in the current times. Similarly the Dakshinayan starts when the length of the night time starts increasing and the length of the day time starts decreasing in the north hemisphere. So this, in the current times occurs one day after the summer solstice, ie on 22nd June. You can do your Daana on these days.

On equinox days, these days are called विषुवत् vishuvat. They are currently at 21st March and 21st September.

During an eclipse of the Sun or the Moon.

The day when the Sun enters the Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces signs are particularly auspicious. In fact all the twelve Surya Sankranti-s are auspicious for offering Daana. ie The day when the Sun enters a sign/ rashi is called the Sankranti. The best one for Daana is the Makar Sankranti when the Sun enters the Capricorn sign (this is also celebrated as Uttarayan in the current times).

Daana can be performed on days when Jupiter transits into another sign.

Akshay tritiya is another auspicious day when Daana can be done.

Then the Tithi-s on which you can perform Daana in a month are these,

  • A Daana made on Amavasya is auspicious. Especially if it is a Somvati Amavasya, ie a no Moon day which falls on a Monday. This amavasya is also very good for snan/bathing in sacred rivers.
  • Daana on Purnimas, ie full Moon days especially the Purnima of the Kartik month is auspicious.
  • On Dvadashi, the 12th day from the no moon day or the full moon day.
  • A Chaturthi on a Tuesday, called the Angarki Chaturthi is a good day for doing Daana. Chaturthi is the 4th day from the no moon day or the full moon day.
  • Also a Saptami falling on a Sunday is highly auspicious. Saptami is the 7th day from the no moon day or the full moon day.
  • Even an Ashtami on a Wednesday is considered good for doing Daana. Ashtami is the 8th day from the no moon day or the full moon day.
  • You can give a Daana on a day where a Tithi has been suppressed/ Lopit tithi. The tithi-s or lunar days are calculated on the basis of the angular distance between the Sun and the Moon. And the regular solar days are calculated from sun-rise to sun-rise. The tithi for the day is the tithi which was in force when the sun was rising. And the lunar day/ tithi is slightly shorter than the solar day. So sometimes on one solar day, 3 lunar tithi-s can occur, this is also called Dina-kshaya, “loss of a day” and is auspicious for Daana.

Then Daana is not supposed to be given or taken during the Sandhya times, ie morning dawn, evening dusk and midday. It is given during the day time, ie between the sunrise and sunset. If you give Daana to a Brahmin, then make sure that he looks and feels like the genuine thing. His energy should be high. Also he should not be eating, sleeping etc when you go to give it to him.

Giving Daana in our powerful ancient temples is a very good option, older the temple better it is. Finding old temples is not an issue in India, most of our temples are at least 1000+ yrs old themselves or re-constructed on sites which are known for thousands of years. You can also put these items in flowing water, sacred rivers like Ganga, Godavari, Tungabhadra etc or the sea are best options. But if its not possible then any flowing river is also good enough.

Finally Daana is not ‘charity’. दान is a Sanskrit word so cannot be translated only experienced. It broadly means giving up, a gift, teaching, sharing, restoring, purification, paying back, imparting, cutting off, communicating etc. When you give away Daana you are restoring your own karmic imbalance. You are sharing your negative karma with someone who is capable of absorbing it. You are cutting yourself off from the negative karma by the act of Daana. You are paying back the energy, you are purifying yourself. So not get high on ego when you give Daan. There is no charity in the real sense ever, you are just re-balancing debts you owe. Be grateful that you are allowed to pay it back as Daana rather than having to endure/ suffer it through. As Daana given with the proper intention always works as a remedy to your astrological issues.

🙏 When I was about 5 years old, my father told me a story about a little thing called atma which he described as my inner me. Once there was a very happy guy who always did wonderful n kind things and was always honest and brave. One day a jealous devil came to him and said, this is no way to be. You are very boring. Come I will show how to be interesting. He took him inside a room and then pulled out something from within the guy. And threw it into a drawer. The guy peeped inside the drawer to see what the devil had put inside the drawer. He saw a golden hued mini him happily dancing with joy. The devil replied , forget about that guy. Come with me. The devil threw luxuries, women, wine on him. The guy grew resentful, revengeful, forever greedy, nothing seemed enough anymore. One day tired, he walked to the drawer and wanted to see that inner guy thrown in. He peeped in and saw a forlorn looking blackish figure stopped in sadness in corner of drawer. The image of the golden figure turned into this forlorn sad one haunted this guy. He realized his truth and left the devils company.
Long story cut short, that story bought me to tears as a kid when ever I remembered it as a kid (and much later too) . The figure of a black forlorn soul haunted me too.
It helped me along with a lot of other similar anecdotes I heard.
Your site will also similarly help lot of people.
Anything which makes people a better version of themselves , I have gratitude for.

What objects and services are appropriate for daan, and which are totally inappropriate? Is giving away old, gently used items to charities daan, or not?

      Hi there
Would you dress your deity in ur puja ghar in a garment which you have “gently used” ?
I have written a post on the items which r given in Daana, also linked it in this post. Do read it.

Giving anything old clothes etc to the needy, old age homes, orphanages, hospitals, mentally affected people in hospitals etc is good karma. Do it if u feel like it. If it helps anyone it is going to help u too. But these recipients shud b genuinely needy and appreciate ur help.
Eg i see fake and druggie beggers sitting outside Shani mandirs on Saturdays. Giving to them is not going to help you.

But Daana in the real sense can be given only to the deities, temples flowing water or genuine Brahmins.

    Hello Tejaswiniji,

In the past, I have been advised by astrologers to give daan to the homeless as well as hospitals. Is that appropriate? Based upon your article it seems that one should only give daan to somebody or some place which has higher energy level as it can help rebalance one’s negative karma. It makes sense, but how do I square that with giving daan to homeless people or maybe that is just a way of accumulating good karma. Can you please provide more clarity?

I have an additional doubt about mantra jaap. I have been working on establishing a steady practice of doing 108 Gayatri mantra jaap daily. I have two questions regarding this – should one focus on one mantra at a time, for example I would like to do both the Navarna mantra and Gayatri mantra daily? Also, should one do Ganpati’s mantra daily before doing other mantras?

    Thank you for your guidance.

You can do whatever mantras u feel like. Depending on what time you have. But the end result of the gayatri and the navavarna or any vedic mantta is essentially the same. All mantras help the mind, manah tarayati iti mantrah.

Can planetary beej mantras (and Navavarna) be also said silently? Or need to be out loud so the “ng” is clear. Though once you understand the energy of the sound it seems possible silently also.
But just thought I’d confirm with you

        Hi there
to begin with any mantra you say it aloud, but not so loud that everyone can hear you.
then you sort of whisper it, the lips move and the tiniest audible sound is made,
finally you say it in your mind
if you can, you can do it in rhythm with your breathing
manasik jaap, ie mental jaap is the highest possible and it generates a lot of energy,
do it only if you are sure that you can absorb it,

    Mam
Again very very thanks for such a useful article on the topic Daana. Would you please spare some time for the term used as Dagdha rasi/zero rasis Or even term used as Burnt Rasis and its owners planets impacts in the charts.
    Thanks again…

Maam have the charts of a couple. Post the marriage ( girl is cancer lagna) her lifestyle and personal care went downhill as all her money went towards the house. But the spouse and his family started doing really well business wise within few months post marriage along with some financial windfalls. Few years into the marriage, along with dowry demands, spouse apparently left the house to live with another woman. The girl after much failed efforts then finally agreed to spouse’s demand for divorce as he wanted to marry the other woman.
As soon as the divorce was finalized, the man’s and his parents business venture shut down, health issues have plagued the family since besides other things. The girl on the other hand is doing better and got back to her old lifestyle.
You had mentioned in your articles about the need for proper matching of horoscopes.
You had mentioned about marriage meaning directly affecting the man and woman’s chart for better or worse and there’s no concept of divorces in vedic. How then did the boys family fortune undergo a sudden reversal post the divorce and they had a return to their pre marriage financially hard up days? What might be possible factors?

      Hi there
the binding energy of the marriage will continue as long as both of them are alive or one of them takes Sanyas,
it is a promise made before the Agni/Surya, cannot be dissolved.

this woman was cheated by the in laws and husband and she had no option to leave the situation.
the husband has dishonored the promises made to her in the Sanskar, he will have to face the repercussions.
no one can hurt another person and expect happiness, in this case the karma was instant, in this life itself.
plus he lived in with a second woman, this is practically a second wife, a new significant partnership, maybe her horoscope was not supportive fr his business etc.

this first wife, she has a clear conscience in this regard, so has bounced back.
living with the man must be draining her enregy, she is free frm that now.

hi – I read through the post on Cancer ascendant and it is an awesome post. Congratulation to you for being blessed with such knowledge and for having an attitude to share your gifts freely. I am not the first one to mention it but that post is very accurate based on my own experiences.

I feel disappointed that I did not find this site before, as you have stopped doing readings. It would have been really great to be able to gain from your readings, but it is what it is and totally respect your decision and viewpoint. Thanks for being the awesome person that I am sure you are in real-life.

    Dearest Tejaswiniji

Few days back I had a thought on दान and was delighted to read your article on it🙏🏻🙂 It is so perfectly written👌🏻♥️

I have a question on chanting mantras. Does a person have to be initiated in the mantra to get the benefits of chanting it, especially beej mantras or Gayatri mantra?

    Lots of love and gratitude

      Hi there
i have writtn several posts on the gayatri mantra,
beej mantras, mantras etc do go thru them, use the index page or the search bar.

gayatri mantra, technically every child should be taught this after he /she turns 6yrs old,

if you want to start now, do so on any Sunday, bathe etc and in the early morning, request the Surya in the skies to be your Guru for this mantra and start.

beej mantras, as these are used for several typical purposes, to tailor the beej mantra to your purpose you will have to ask someone who knows to help you
