Vedic Maths of the Luni Solar year in Jyotish

Last Updated on October 30, 2024 by Tejaswini

The year of Jyotish is neither solar nor lunar. The Vedic /Hindu / Jyotish year is a combination of the two, it is a Luni Solar year. It is a blessing for us that our Maharishis were able to intuit such high level math and astronomy and we are still following these same principles, keeping ‘Time’ correctly through the ages. Being in sync with Kaal is the secret of all spiritual practices and Jyotish is the sacred science of Time, the Shastra of Kaal.

‘Time’ on this earth is primarily calculated on the basis of the movement of the Earth. And this is because we live on this Earth so our Kaal / Time depends on the movement of this Earth. Do think a bit on this, ‘time’ is actually your own movement through space. But as you live on this Earth, your movement in space is almost the same as the Earth’s movement through space. And it is your own movement in space /time which triggers your own karmic fruits. This is Conscious Time, Kaal in Devbhasha Samskrutam, and this is the ultimate controller, the Karmaphaldata.

Sanskrit is a very precise language. There are no approximations or implied meanings here. Similarly Math is a very precise and logical language. Students of Jyotish are required to be students of Sanskrit and Math. Jyotish is based on Sanskrit and Math.

The Solar day and the Solar year

The ‘day’ in Jyotish or the Vedic day, is the time taken by the Earth to rotate around itself. This is from sunrise to sunrise. We perceive it as the apparent movement of the Sun around the Earth. This length of time is slightly variable but is an approx 24hrs, ie one ‘solar day’ or Vaar. It is composed of the Din maan – day time, sunrise to sunset and Ratri maan – night time, sunset to sunrise. We use the din maan and ratri maan for specific calculations.

The solar month starts with the Sankranti. Sankranti, (samyak kranti – auspicious going forward) is the entry of the Sun into a sign. Mesh Sankranti is the entry of the Sun into the Aries sign. And Mesh Sankranti is the beginning of the Solar year as the Sun is exalted in Aries. The solar month is exactly 30 solar days long as the Sun moves one arc degree of the zodiac in a solar day.

The Lunar day and the Lunar year

The ‘lunar day’ is called the ‘tithi’ and this is a misunderstood concept. This ‘tithi’ is loosely translated as ‘lunar day’ but it is not a ‘day’. Its duration not about 24hrs, it does not correspond with the solar day. A tithi is a variable unit of time, it can range from 19 to 26hrs and it averages at about 23hr 37min. A tithi is the time in which the arc degree distance between the Sun and the Moon in the skies changes by 12 arc degrees. A ‘lunar year’ is 360 tithis long not ‘360 days’ long. The lunar year is thus about 354.3 solar days long.

A lunar month ends on the Amavasya tithi, thus is called Amavasyant. It starts on the Shukla Pratipada, the first tithi of the bright fortnight, which occurs after the Amavasya. A lunar month is composed of exactly 30 lunar days/tithis. If you think in terms of solar days, then a lunar month can have 28-29 or so solar days. The important point is that in terms of solar days the lunar month is always less than 30 solar days long.

So when we have to use this lunar month as a factor in our Luni Solar year we have to understand this concept. – Most lunar months will have a Surya Sankranti in it. But there will come a lunar month in which the Sun does not change his sign, ie there is no Surya Sankranti, the Sun will continue in the same sign. ie the Sun will be in the same sign for two consecutive Amavasyas. And such an exceptional lunar month will repeat at fixed intervals. Only those Lunar months in which a Surya Sankranti occurs are considered to be Nija or Shuddha and are counted in our Luni Solar calendar. A Lunar month in which a Surya Sankranti does not occur is the Adhik maas. This is not counted in the Luni Solar calendar, it is extra, additional, intercalary. It repeats at specific intervals because it is a pattern in math.

An example. In the past year named Shri Shobhakruti ie 2023 – 24, the

  • Karka Sankranti was on 16th July 2023. ie Sun entered Cancer sign on this day
  • Ashadh Amavasya on 17th July 2023. ie the Ashadh month ended on this day
  • Adhik Shravan started on Shukla Pratipada tithi on 18th July 2023
  • Adhik Shravan ended on Adhik Shravan Amavasya on 16th Aug 2023
  • Shuddha Shravan ie the regular Shravan started on 17th Aug 2023
  • Simha Sankranti was on 17th Aug 2023 ie Sun entered Leo sign on this day
  • So the extra Adhik Shravan from 17th Jul to 16th Aug did not have a Surya sankranti thus was the additional, Adhik maas.

Try to understand how this math works – in the first year, the Sun and Moon calendars are out of sync by about 11 days, in the second year by about 22days and in the third year they are brought back in sync by the adhik month correction system. Again in the 4th year they are out of phase by about 11days and so on.

Thus our solar and lunar years are always aligned by this inbuilt adhik month. This is an integral alignment and we have always followed it. (The ancient Greeks also followed it and called this the Metonic cycle) . Our Vedic year is and always has been 365.25 days, ie the commonly understood regular year. Our calendars are accurate and self correcting because our ancient Jyotishis were extraordinary at both math and astronomy. The concept of the adhik month is fundamental to our calendar making. A lunar month without a Surya sankranti is an adhik month, which will repeat at specific intervals. And the addition of this intercalary month automatically and perpetually keeps correct time.

Now it might be useful to list out a few more technical terms.

  • Varsha – is the time interval of the annual solar movement. This is linked to the seasons. In Sanskrit and in all Bharatiya languages, ‘Varsha’ means ‘year’. Varsha is derived from Varshaa, the rainy season. Our year is linked to the seasons and thus to the Sun. When your son touches your feet, for blessing him with a long life you say ‘Jivet sharadam shatam’. ‘Sharad’ is the autumn season and considered to be one of the most delightful months. Thus you bless your son to live for a 100 autumn seasons. We perceive our time in seasons. We can also consider the year to be the time between the solstices or the equinoxes as these events are easier to calculate using Math/Ganit and are evident by Astronomy/ Gol.
  • Samvatsar – is commonly understood as the name of the ‘year’. Eg the current Hindu year is called the Shri Krodhi naam samvatsar. But more correctly Samvatsar is the calculated year. The Samvatsar is the annual apparent Solar movement on which the Lunar correction is superimposed. The samvatsar is a composite of the lunar and the solar movements which are mathematically calculated and maintained throughout time. And this correction factor, the Adhik maas occurs every 3 samvatsars.
  • Samvat – is one more word that is used in calendar making. Samvat means an Era. At the present time we follow two major samvat systems. One is the Shaka samvat – ie the British calendar year minus 78 yrs. And the second is Vikram samvat which is British calendar year plus 57 yrs. The length of the year is the same, only the name/number of the year varies as per the founding king.
  • Then Chaitraadi and Kartikaadi.
  • In most of Bharat, the year ends with the Phalgun Amavasya when the Sun and Moon are in Pisces. And starts with the Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, ie the Chaitradi system. Chaitra is the first month of the year. Our national panchangam is Chaitraadi.
  • But in Western India, specifically in Gujarat, the Kartikaadi system is followed. The year ends on Ashwin Amavasya when the Sun and Moon are in Libra ie on Deepavali Amavasya. (Here the Sun is debilitated and the Lunar energies are predominant.) And starts on Kartik Shukla Pratipada.

Both Phalgun and Ashwin Amavasyas are highly potent energies where one should if possible stay up the entire night to channelise them by doing their pujas. In fact every Amavasya is a burst of energy which should be utilised mindfully.

All this confusion has risen because in the past 50yrs or so, we have stopped learning the Math and the visual Astronomy involved in Jyotish. I doubt if the ‘software’ astrologers of today can even visually identify the Nakshatra in the night skies. (In fact the night skies are not even visible anymore in the cities because of the light pollution. Even in the small town in the hill state where I live, there are very high levels of light pollution.)

Learning Ganit and Gol was a method of ensuring that the intellectually capable first learnt the math and astronomy and only then took up Jyotish. This meant that they could predict intelligently, accurately and consistently.

If you really want to learn Jyotish the way it should be learnt, then at least do the calculations of your own horoscope, with its divisional charts, ashtakvarga, planetary strengths, etc, everything by hand. It may take you a few months but all your basic concepts will be clear after this exercise.

The concept of Time /Kaal in Jyotish is rooted in the celestial movements of the Sun, Moon and the Earth, together. Our Maharishis had a profound understanding of this cosmic order and through meticulous calculations and alignment they have ensured the accuracy and perpetuity of the Luni Solar calendar. Several astronomical events, eg Sankranti, Amavasya, tithi, vaar, adhik maas etc are combined in the most perfect manner to arrive at the Vedic Year, ie the Samvatsar of the Hindus.

I have written a technical answer to a question which several of my readers seem to have, thus I am also giving the specific reference book – Mantreshwar’s Phaldeepika.

    Namaste Ma’am,

Sorry for going off topic again.

Why is the Mars and Saturn conjunction considered to be inauspicious if Mars is exalted in the domain of Saturn(Capricorn)?

I mean how to understand it as a real life example : I feel comfortable and/or powerful in someone’s house, but I don’t feel very comfortable (or maybe neither do they) when I and that ‘someone’ are together in a house?

    Thank you Ma’am.

      Hi there

10th house/ Capricorn is the structure which helps you gain the highest point in your life.
Mars’ energy here is always going to be useful ..

but otherwise both together is a turbulent scene.

Thank you ma’am for enlightening us on this topic. Could you shed more light on “Samvat” and how it is calculated. Also, why the Samvatsara starting is only Chaitraadi or Karthikaadi? Is there an Astronomical reason?

One reason that I heard is about the day and night concepts for Devas. After Ashwin/Ashwayuja Amavasya it is said as night for Devas till Phalguna Amavasya and day from Chaitra Shukla pratipada till Ashwayuja Amavasya. 6 earth months as day and 6 earth months as night.

Hello Mam, Can you elaborate on why tithi would fluctuate between 19 and 26 hours?

What I have understood is that Moon wobbles in its path around the earth, which makes it travel either faster or slower to cover 12 deg. Is there a method to this wobble?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
the movement of the sun and the moon as seen from the earth. all three move/ wobble etc..
      there are several variables.
thus the variation in the tithi.

After some study, I was able to understand the difference between the luni-solar and Solar new years.
As I understand, luni-solar is used primarily for mundane astrology and solar is used to indicate the start of a new 12 month cycle of Surya.

Solar, Lunar, Civil, Jupiterian and the Luni Solar.

Hello Mam, Could you please help me understand the logic to the two questions for which I have not been able to find any satisfactory answers,
    1. What is the logic behind a circle having 360 degrees, does it originate from Jyothish?
    2. A year, month, and day are observable from natural phenomenon, where as the 7 day week seems to be an artificial construct, where did this come from?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
everything originates from the Ved and Tantra
even the so called ‘mechanical’ and ‘quantum’ physics and when they find their so called ‘grand unifying force’ it will come from the Ved.

Jyotish is also a part of the Ved/ Tantra.

Unfortunately the illiterate invaders destroyed our libraries and books. thus we do not have the entire body of work with us today.
and those books which we have, we cannot read/ understand as we do not understand our original mother tongue, Sanskrit.

7 days is not an artificial construct. it is very much valid. each day has a different energy and it resonates with the graha of Jyotish.
see if you want to see/ experience the energies you have to get rid of so many preconceived notions which are related to the purely material world.
eg the 7 chakras which every ‘spiritual master’ now claims to heal, who has seen them? but for those who have retrained themselves to sense the energy flow, they are evident.
Marma points, nadi, pran etc are not visible, but are very much present

so if you want to really understand things, start with learning to see auras. then see where your journey takes you.

    Hi Madam,

Could you please explain the non literal ( real) meaning of the saptshati adhyay’s in some of your future posts, if possible.
From what i could guess , the devi ( kundalini) kills ( removes) the various asura’s (negativity) in different adhyay’s ( at different chakra’s as it moves upwards) like madhu kaitabh, chand mund, shumbh nishumbh. But this is purely very simplistic anyone can guess. But there must be detailed and non generic meaning of so many shloka’s, so could you reveal it to us.

Also, 8th adhyay of raktbeej vadh text says many shonit’s were created from his blood and it would create new raktbeejs again, but shonit literally means ova and it is generated from female body, but raktbeej was a male. doesn’t tally as far as i understand.

What did Bharath as a country do in the past to get such horrible Karma like invasions, partitions?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
not just Bharat, look at all the nations in the world…
all the continents are a story written in blood.

eg. Originally America was home to 3 civilizations, all wiped out by purposely introducing small pox. millions millions dead in a few years!
Africa is a story of pain, generations looted for the resources of this richest continent.. and its still going on..
Original Australian people are called ‘aboriginals’, why?
      Asia, less said the better.
      all the nations are suffering..

and the reason is the same.
when the correct person fails to take the correct decision at the appointed Time. the wrong person uses the energy of that Time to drag everyone towards downwards.
so read real history, read who was that correct person who failed us and the wrong person who seized the energy of the opportunity

We are required to Act, but we dont. we dont want to take on the responsibility which is ours.
      thus this tragedy.

      1. Arun Avatar
        Arun

        Namasthe mam,
        1. Bharatha or any other nation had good Intentions behind their decisions I’m sure, so I don’t understand what you mean by taking correct actions, we have had all illustrious Kings and Leaders from Rama to Krishna, so it can’t be their decision, it must be somebody else, but Bharatha has never done anything remotely as horrendous to anyone as what has been done to her, so why this bad Karma.
        2. Then is the principle of Live and Let live not a good principle to live by as it is too passive?

      2. astrologerbydefault Avatar

        Hi there

        1. when you look at the global events then you have to see the actions of all people who have lived here.
‘good intentions’ which lead to the deaths of millions?
one horrid horrid example – humans kept in cages or thought to be animals just because they look different ? or experimented using untested chemicals for ‘medical research’ ?
or getting entire nations addicted to opium/ drugs? for money
        – this is the present scenario. we are already so far down the slippery slope

But in the Ramayan, so many wrong decisions taken by all the major actors. and even worse in Mahabharat.

the itihas is composed at the end of an Era, and only by Maharishis. it contains the essence of the Era so that the new Era can read and pick up the learning lessons.

Bharat may have not done horrendous things. but we in our grandiose ‘punya paap’ theories have forgotten that we have to Act.
we have brainwashed ourselves into thinking that if we keep on doing pujas, bhajans etc all day long the ‘God’ will save us! it is a very dangerous mindset which has been purposely introduced into our society.

Shri Krishna is popularly shown dancing around Gopis playing the flute. He has never done this. the History, the Mahabharat, the Itihas does not mention this at all.
He was a boy of 11yrs when he left Gokul permanently. 11yr boy is a child. there is no character named ‘radha’ in the Mahabharat! when was this story introduced? read a bit on how our history was purposely diverted.

But what he did was to engineer the greatest war in history for annihilating Adharma.
and we do not even want to think of him like that.
if everyone thinks and worships Him as the Vishvaroop. as He has described Himself, His real Self, in the Gita, we will get the sense and the courage to Act.
        but we wont.

Shri Ram – in the Vanvas, he met with several Rishis. and destroyed countless Asurs. the entire stretch from todays Madhya pradesh to Shri Lanka was infested with these adharma. he waged war, alone and only with his brother Shri Laxman for help. can you imagine the courage needed.

but no we will stick to the agnipariksha, ie why was Devi Sita made to sit in the Agni. btw i have doubts on the veracity this story as there are over 200 versions of the Ramayan. and the last ‘original’ copy was destroyed when the illiterate invaders set the Kolkata library on fire.
        my considered opinion is this
        – she requested the Agni Mahabhoot to cleanse the aura from all negativity. as she had been living in the stronghold of the Asurs for several months.
even today this is a standard method of ‘burning’ out evil eye from the aura. it happens when you ‘take Arti’ ie cup the flame of the arti with your palms.

and the uttar Ramayan is not a part of the Ramayan. The phalshruti of Ramayan is immediately after the coronation of Shri Ram.

its a long and involved history, try to piece the fragments the best you can.

and if we think back to the past 2000yrs. why did we stop doing karmakand? think on this. if you are able to find the real reason, you will be shocked out of your mind.

a 1000yrs back? why did the Kings not kill the invaders? why did they leave them alive to gather strength and come back again? these Kshatriyas failed and failed repeatedly in their duty.

We have forgotten the real father of the nation, Maharishi Chanakya.

think. why are all the forts of Dakshin Bharat in such inaccessible locations? on top of mountains, where to climb up is a trek. the forts are like barracks. the kings lived a harsh life here.
and the forts of the Uttar Bharat are resorts?

not taking the due action is bad karma by omission, karmaphal has to be endured later.
eg Devvrat Bhishma. omission leading to the destruction of the war.

we have to read our Itihas, and as far as possible in Sanskrit or at least some Bharatiya language. buy the Gita press books and read.

        2. not a good principle.
you cannot close your eyes to illegal unethical immoral things around you.

        Sumana Kandaka

        Namaskara Tejaswiniji,

I can think of one of the resasons for us not to do any karmakand is the lack of understanding on the laws of karma. When we understand Purnatatva/Shunyatva, we understand why our karmas as per our dharma should be performed. Any deviation in understanding and realizing our dharma will misguide our karmas. Without dharma, morals have no meaning, as they will exist outside context. And only Sanatana dharma frames morals in context (dharma), which leads us to purnatatva (moksha is realizing purnatatva inside us – one definition).

An example, ahimsa paramo dharma is a much touted moral. Let us put it in the context of dharma. Ahimsa is good for a scholar, a worker, householder, a business man, a sanyasi, a student. These definitions can be applied to 3 of 4 varnas, a brahmana, a vaisya, a sudra. But it does not apply to a kshyatriya while discharging his karma, because a hunter or soldier or king is a function of the protection of society. They protect us from external and internal dangers. So ahimsa is a vikruti of their dharma, hence their karma by nature during protection is violence. During non existence of threat, ahimsa or restraint is much sought out even in a protector. So only one religion started emphasizing ahimsa among kshatriyas. One king famously converted to it and spread it around Akhand Bharat, which set a precedent of practicing ahimsa among kshatriyas. So when invasions happened later, it made it easy to forgive the invader and give him second (or in some cases, 17) chances.

This is one example of karma performed without framework of dharma.

Please let me know your thoughts.

        Pranaama,
        Sumana

        the entire shlok is

        do not quote half shloks.

      Hi there
english is not how the Vedic Rks are to be understood.
reading such horrible translation of the Rks is actually painful

learn basic Sanskrit and then if you feel upto it learn the Vedic Sanskrit. both are slightly different

Sanskrit has several meanings, depends on the level of the student and his understanding.

but as the context here is time,
solar year is an approx 360 days – it is followed for the pujas eg sankranti pujas. the solar months names are also different
      https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2019/04/17/twelve-aditya-the-sun-gods/

lunar year is approx 354 days, muslims follow this even today and fall back by 10 odd days every regular year

But the corrected luni solar year is approx 365 days.

and it could as equally be 360degrees. not days. and a few other things are also 360.

Something that has bothered me from a long time is the story of Lord Parasuhrama establishing Parashurama Kshetra, it could be an allegorical story to say Parashuramam took the land by force from the people there and distributed it to the Namboodiris to prevent sub division and fragmentation of fertile lands, isn’t this itself a wrong decision? Hi there

today most clients feel entitled to a reading. they feel that it is the responsibility of the Jyotishi to solve their problems. and it does not work like that. if you are in a problem then you have to work to get it out. others can give advice but you have choose the path you think fit and to Act for yourself.
pinning hopes on the Jyotishi creates problems for both.

i am not bound to see anyone’s charts. no one can compel me.
if the chart does not have a strong 9th house the person will never get the guidance he seeks. he will have to first improve his 9th house by his actions. only then will he get access to his purvapunya /advice etc.

My bad for not being more specific with my question mam, the question I should have asked is to what degree to do I get involved if I observe immorality, eg: in USA use of marijuana is widespread even legal, unlike in India, even though I know it is wrong, even the cops cannot do anything, but if I make it my life mission I maybe successful in stopping it, but if that is not my calling and I’m okay with people smoking it, as long as I’m not affected by this smoking, isn’t live and let live okay?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
USA has more issues than the marijuana,
at least cannabis plant has some medicinal uses if properly utilised and prescribed

the Phalgun amavasya eclipse was so intense. such a distorted energy!
i personally needed a week to assimilate it properly. even though i live half a world away from that area.
the people and the land which actually absorbed it! no one can even predict what is going to happen..

Hello mam, sorry about the bad translation I provided in my previous question, 360 and 720, did they round up these numbers because it was easier to calculate or was it because a savana varsha actually had 360 sunrises earlier, After all the Ideal Calendar Hindu uses 12 months each having 30 days? It seems far fetched that our great Rshis made a mistake in knowing how many days it actually took.

    1. As a Person living in USA, I know this is a very Adharmic place, so I do not understand exactly what makes India the only place where Mokshsa can be provided, what about the land India is so special that all Avatars decided to take Birth there? This is something I have been unable to wrap my head around. Shouldn’t the Avatars take birth here so that it can be destroyed?

    2. In your opinion is Dasarajna, Battle of the Ten Kings an authentic event?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
      1. It does not matter to the Ishwar. Dharma and adharma are the same to Him/ Her…
it matters to us. so we do pujas with intention. when the intention reaches a tipping point the IShwar says ‘tathastu’. and a baby is born with the energy of the Avtar.
we the people/ manushyas, ‘create’ the Avtar by our relentless pujas/ intentions.

for the Eternal to be born in a body, Major Tapah / sadhana/ puja /yajnya/ anushthan is needed. Sanatan Dharma has to be followed. Ishwar samarpan and prasad buddhi is needed.
so tell me which nation has a major chunk of people who do this sort of routine regularly? Apart from Bharat?

      2. how can i discuss the Ved in a simple blog?
it could have very much been a historical event
but it has other meanings too

the meanings of the Rks are not so easy to understand.
i have written on the Rks of Shri sukta and Mahamrutyunjai mantra.. use the index if you wish to read these posts.
and what i have written is not even 1% of the energy of these Rks.

    2.Soura Varsha
    3. Saavana Varsha
    4.Nakshatra Varsha
    5. Barhaspatya Vatsara

but 360 degrees did not come from savana.

Sorry to keep bothering you about this simple issue, I ‘m getting confused about Saavana Varsha and Soura Varsha, at any point in the past is it possible that the Saavana varsha and Soura varsha were the same? Or did they just not include the extra 5 odd days in the Saavana varsha? Can ypu please clarify mam?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
there have always been 5 types of years.
      each has its own significance

savana is exactly 360 days – sunrise to sunrise is one day here.

but saura may not be exactly 360 days! it is the time taken for the apparent movement of the Sun so there is a math involved.

the year we use for Jyotish is the Luni solar year.

How can someone get clarity about the right thing to do (that is in line with dharma) when most of us do not have full and correct understanding of scriptures? My understanding of your answers seems that we should act as per our conscious but when our knowledge about scriptures and dharma is not fully developed, we cannot rely on conscious only as it is clouded. What could be some reliable tests to understand what is the right action?

eg: if we follow panch mahayagya, we should all strive to have children but many are not able to have children without IVF. If we follow Gita then it appears to me that we should even accept choiceness situations with prasadbuddhi but it also appears that we should do our duty to the fullest. So would IVF be considered in line with dharma or against it?

This is just one case but everyday we face situations which put us at cross roads – how to understand dharma when our knowledge is not fully developed?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
the sub conscious mind knows everything.
but your perceived insecurities are like a layer of thick tar on the ocean of your mind.
thus these things from the Avchetan mann do not register on your conscious mind.

clean out this tar, do your sadhana, do your mantra, try for manah sayyam, things will happen
access to the avchetan is a major step in evolution
      do your mantra.

there are only 3 ‘proofs –
Guru prachiti – follow your Guru
Granth prachiti – follow the Shastra eg Bhagwat Gita
      Atma prachiti – your conscience

i have written on IVF. use the index or search bar

Most Indians are small when compared to Caucasians and Africans, is this because of our diet in which rice and wheat is predominant ( I have read your post on food and diet) or is it because of genetics, did the deliberate famines caused in India change our genes in some manner that does not let our grow to our full extent?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
      read history
read how the greedy invaders destroyed our real food, ie millets.
read about the millet acts where the farmers where penalised for growing millets. they ate wheat so wanted our farmers to produce wheat.

our natural food is Millets. change your diet to millets and see the difference in your life.

my grandparents never ate much wheat and rice.
it was always Jowar bajri nachni vaari etc. in various forms.
wheat and rice was like ‘fast food’ back then, eg offering a chapati made of wheat to guests was considered to be an insult. would you offer 2 min noodles to your guest? something like that.

it is a wonder how a external force intent on destroying our nation has succeeded on this level in achieving its goal.

our north was destroyed by wheat and our south by rice – both forced on us by the British.

also the famines. and why the famines?
coz the greatest drug runners in the history of the world forced our farmers to grow opium instead of food. and sold that opium to China. thus destroyed two nations in one go.

if you are from India or Indian descent. read history. read the extent of torture that our ancestors went through. and that trauma still resonates in our DNA.

my mother’s family was originally from Goa, they fled to escape the Portuguese inquisition there.
even when i was a small child, and did not know much, going to Goa was nightmares and feelings of suffocation.

Thank you for clearing this doubt mam, being in the USA one tends to notice these differences and wonder, cutting us from our matrabhasha Sanskritam, allowed them to indoctrinate the masses of Bharatha who otherwise would easily have been able to overthrow them. It’s thanks to the efforts from people like YOU and OTHERS our culture still remains,

        1. You know the real history of Bharatha more than anybody else I have come across, other than reading texts in Sanskritam, do you recommend any other internet sources, like blogs, websites, to follow and read?
Google usually censors and hides everything and gives a whitewashed history.

        2. Bharatha fell because of petty disputes between jings and allowing the colonizers inside, at least when Ram Mandira had not been constructed we Bharatas had a common goal to rally under, how do we manage to stay united in the future?

Already there are debates/ divisions breaking about which Mandira needs to constructed and not constructed.

        Hi there
it is so easy to blame the invaders, Isn’t it?
but they are invaders, they are supposed to invade and destroy. they are doing their job.

the correct question is what stopped the ‘invadees’ our people from putting up a front against the invaders?

i can tell you the answer, but i won’t.

        think.

        read history dispassionately.
there will be emotional issues as this is what your grandparent generations went through.
but unless you can put the emotions aside and use your intellect there is no point. you will get depressed

        1. google is just a search engine. it is not the final say on history
go to the physical library. look at the books, feel them in your hands.
read books which are at least 100 -150yrs old. they will be in the Indian languages, from Sanskrit to marathi hindi bengali gujarathi etc.

the invaders have always burnt the libraries of the invadees.. Alexandria, to Kolkata the trend is the same..
today google is the digital equivalent

        2. Bharat never ‘fell’. do not use words like these without understanding.
as long as there is even one person alive who follows Sanatan dharma, Bharat cannot ‘fall’
        – Aztecs fell, Mayans fell, Incas fell, ‘pagan’ /Hindu Rome fell,

and the reason was not petty kings and their egos.
i will not tell you the reason, work it out for yourself.
once you stop thinking emotionally, it is evident.

    Hi mam,
I have several possible answers to your question “what stopped our people from putting up a front against the invaders” am not sure which one is the root cause,

    a) No good way to communicate with a large number of people at the same time?
b)Misunderstanding the concept of Ahimsa, forgetting Rama and Krishna waged a war.

c)Fatalistic mindset thinking all this is predetermined.

d)Misplaced sense of Loyalty to the ruler rather than the WATAN.

It was wrong to use that word, thank you for correcting me mam, and reminding how even one person who follows Sanatana Dharma can literally make a difference to Bharatha.

I noticed you did not call the Aztecs, Mayans,Incas pagans/ Hindoo? is there a reason because I have read there are lot of similarities to Hindoos,

I’m not sure other than inviting and treating their invaders like god, what other reason is common to the fall of Aztecas, Mayans, Incas, Romans, mam.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
these are definitely the reasons which contributed. but at the root there is only one reason. think critically.

you have slightly touched on it here – ‘I’m not sure other than inviting and treating their invaders like god, what other reason is common to the fall of Aztecas, Mayans, Incas, Romans, mam.’

      https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2023/02/16/atithi-devo-bhavah/

every civilization which worshipped deities with multiple arms followed Sanatan Dharma. and multiple arms is not just aesthetics, there is a reason.

pagan / Hindu / Sanatan Dharma are all the same for the people today

unfortunately these civilisations were destroyed so thoroughly – language, songs, culture, names the things ‘living’ are all gone — we can only guess from the archeological stuff.

Maya are most likely descendants of Maya Danav
Aztecs are mostly likely connected to Astik Muni
Inca – i cannot think of a Sanskrit cogate for this word. i think the actual Incans pronounced this word differently
eg Cyrus of Persia – Cyrus is anglicised, it is actually pronounced as ‘Kuru’ – and we know who the Kuru are.
Rome is obviously a corruption of Ram, or Ramaa
      Vatican is a corrupted Vatika
even most english names are directly Sanskrit
eg – Katrina is actually Ekatrina – the one who appears as three, William is Vilayam – dissolution with awareness
even towns – eg Morocco or even Sumeria are derived from Meru
the Egyptian emperor Akhenton is Eknathan
every nation which has the word ‘stan’ in its name is Sanskrit and had followed Sanatan Dharma

Hi Mam, thank you so much for this eye opening reply,

Your “Athithi Devo Bhavah” post was deeply enlightening, this goes to show how misunderstanding one line because of not knowing our mother tongue Samskrutam was Catastrophic to these civilizations, and this should be a lesson for all of us to learn Samskrutam, if not for any other reason.

Is the reason for deities having multi arms, symbolic? They represent cosmic forces which influence humans in subtle and not so subtle ways. Maybe multi arms were used as it was easier to carve, draw, this complex concept?

Reading the Samskrutam cogates was very fascinating mam,
I have read that “Inca” in Quechua language and “Dinaka” in Samskrutam mean “Child of the Sun” and perhaps the Inca god Viracocha is the same as our Virochana?

as there are over 700 now

        Of course it is symbolic.
the Vishvaroop – the real ‘god’ of the Bhagwat Gita has infinite heads, hands, feet, bodies….
and at the highest levels of understanding, the arms of your adored deity will reduce to 4 and finally to only 2. then the deity itself will ‘vanish’

read shilpa shastra if you have the real books available. and the Bhagwat Gita

the word ‘inca’ if it were actually pronounced ‘inga’ then it is a purely Sanskrit word, it means knowledge, movement etc. a very powerful word, no wonder they performed intense tantrik rituals.
i was wondering about this word ‘inca’ and it clicked today.
it is quite easy for akshar in the same class to get mixed up , ka can change to ga easily.

    Hi mam,
The new information you provided about the deity vanishing is very profound, I have started to learn Samskrutam, but it has been a uphill task to find good teachers from here in a online setting, my final aim and dream is to read our books in Samskrutam.

Wow, Inca and Inga, it’s so brilliant!!

I did find an article on Helen F Troy and how she complied a dictionary of the words of the Onondaga and Mohawk words, I’m not sure why you suggested this because she says Onondaga mothered Sanskrit, I paraphrase her below:

“There exists no doubt,” stated Mrs. Troy, “that the mythology of the Iroquois antedates that of the Greeks and Romans, and in fact all other peoples just as their language does that of the Hebrews and all others.” She further claimed “that Onondaga, the mother tongue of all the ages, mothered also Sanskrit.”

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
      change the way you think.

her inferences were based on her perceptions.
i did not tell u to follow her perceptions /inference. but you are free to do so if u wish.

but it would be an active use of your own intelligence to use her data through your own lens and come to your own conclusions.

she says “that Onondaga, the mother tongue of all the ages, mothered also Sanskrit.”
because her data set regarding Sanskrit was incomplete.

so what is stopping you from saying ““that Sanskrit, the mother tongue of all the ages, mothered also Onondaga.”
this can be taken further — the native American people in the very ancient past spoke Sanskrit and with time their spoken language changed. just like in Bharat and in all the other nations in the world, where every state speaks a highly distorted version on Sanskrit.

why go to Onondaga, a language not spoken much, even in English Pater is Pitru, Deus is Dev…
in Arabic – A and La are the beej mantra .. now find out what they do..
even the name Arabastan is pure Sanskrit – Arvastan , land of the horses. Va changed to Ba. eg even in Bharat Bihar is actually Vihar..

sometimes i really wonder if people want to change the way think perceive / think.. it is so easy to just follow by rote what the earlier people concluded

so there were several ‘learned British’ who concluded that the Ved are ‘nonsense songs sung by illiterate cowherds’..

        Arun

        Hi Mam,

I just saw how I was guilty of learning by rote what others conclude, I again THANK YOU for that valuable lesson, now more than ever I begin to understand why you say it all starts with learning Samskrutham.

I’ll do what I can, to find out if such a dictionary was indeed complied, and published and where I can access it,

There is another Dictionary complied by Zeisberger, called “Zeisberger’s Indian dictionary, English, German, Iroquois–the Onondaga and Algonquin–the Delaware” a missionary who seems to have compiled this dictionary before Mrs Troy.

I’m not sure why you asked for Mrs Troy’s dictionary in specific, is it because she was asked to do so by the wife of a Mohawk and can be trusted?

I have come across Romania – Ramaniya (रमणीय)
You have already spoken about the Elder Futhark and it’s significance of the 24 letters.
It would be more than impossible to dismiss the similarities between the Scandinavian “Eddas” and Sanatana Dharma’s “Vedas” as coincidence.

Hello Ma’am, a couple of questions about this post.

    1) What is the rationale behind using a luni-solar calendar?
From what I can tell solar calendar and lunar calendar are more-or-less independent of each other. And the “adhik-maas” concept exists only to bring these two calendars in sync with each other.
But I don’t understand why did the ancients go through the trouble of keeping 2 calendars and having an extra correction month to keep them in sync in the first place?

    2) Why is Sun exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra? I have found many resources that list the exalted and debilitated signs of different grahas, but no good reasoning for how/why a zodiac-sign/position-in-space affects the force of a graha.

    3) The idea that Kaal is “conscious” time – is expanding my mind. I would love to learn more about this idea either in a future post or if you could point me to a relevant past article.

Lastly, I wanted to suggest a minor correction paragraph 4 of this post:
“Vedic Day, is the time of the rotation of the Earth around the Sun.” should be “Vedic Day, is the time of the rotation of the Earth around its own axis” = the apparent movement of Sun around the Earth.

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. _/\_

      Hi there
      1. what other calender can be used?
the condition is that you have to match the perceived time with the sun, the moon, the nakshatra belt/bhaachakra, and also ensure that the seasons come in the same sequence/month each year. that is the sun/moon/nakshatra have to repeat with the same seasons each season cycle and this has to be in sync for aeons.

see if you can come up with some other way of measuring time?
keeping correct time is actually very complicated if you want everything to match accurately.

(or like the islamic calender which is purely lunar. their months slip back by 11-12 days every season cycle. their months, sun, moon, nakshatra, seasons do not match. the year does not repeat in the real sense. and 2 billion people follow it)

and there are 5 types of years, with several corrections.
if you know a good Jyotishi who is also a panchang-kaar, ie knows how to maintain the panchang, you can ask him.
math and astronomy put together is very fascinating to learn.

and they are not ‘ancients’ like in gone and over types. their logic, math, all that they did is still followed today and maintained for the future with the same intensity.

      2. i wrote about the logic of the exaltation /debilitation of planets in my several posts. do use the index page.

space, time, energy is connected to consciousness.

if you are a follower of Sanatan Dharma/ Hinduism then learning Jyotish will be of use to you.
but if you do not accept the authority of the Ved, then there is no point. you will never be able to understand.

      3. Kaal is Conscious Time. what else would it be?
‘Time’ is the concept of Kaal minus the Intelligence.
If you do understand what Kaal is you would be Mukt.
Kaal, Kaali, Kalaa, Kala, काल काली कला कल are all interconnected concepts.

thnx for pointing out the edit.
