Reiki initiation: To do or not to do?

There are always several questions on getting Reiki initiation.

In my personal opinion, you are already connected to the ‘Source’ energy. Reiki is just another name for your personal energy connection with the universe. You do not need a formal Reiki initiation to work with the universal energy. The only thing that you should be doing is to reinforce this connection. And the easiest way of doing this is to do your own mantra puja regularly. Just sit on your asan before your adored deity and mentally recite your mantras. Do this twice a day. This will strengthen your own connection with the universe and with time you will be able to use this energy consciously.

I have written on how to sense your energy in this post. Do try it.

In the current times, unfortunately all ‘energy healing’ techniques including Reiki have turned into money making machines for the ‘teachers’. Random people are creating new symbols, claiming that ‘Reiki’ has ‘evolved’. Students are getting initiated into so many ‘forms’ of Reiki! It is not good to have so many ‘symbols’ and initiation energies inserted into your energy body. And any problem with your energy body/ sookshma sharir takes several lifetimes to repair.

The teacher is always in a very responsible position because he/she moulds the student to be like him. Simple eg, even in school/colleges, your teacher will make you follow his ideas. As you learn eg Math Science etc you start thinking like your teacher, you take on your school/college teacher’s ideas. You learn the subject just like the teacher teaches it. You eventually ‘become’ like your teacher, at least as far as the topic. eg if your Math teacher loved Math then you too will learn to love Math. Or if your teacher taught Sanskrit as just a job to be done, you will also not really connect with the language. The teacher is extremely important.

And when you get ‘initiated’ into any energy system, you link up with your teacher on the energy levels also. Your teacher transfers some part of his conscious energy into you and you accept this part of your teacher’s energy into your own energy body. This is the basic concept of ‘initiation’. In Sanatan Dharma we have extremely high standards for the Guru from whom we get our mantra/ beej mantra. We prefer to wait till we meet a genuine Atmajnyani Mahapurush and then we request him to give us Mantra diksha. Till then we do the Ajapa mantras which do not need initiations, ie Soham and Hamsa.

The point being, in the current Reiki scenario there are several unscrupulous ‘teachers’. So always choose your Reiki teacher very carefully. Else you will be energy linked with some problematic person and this will cause you problems for several lifetimes.

The origin of Reiki is a bit confused as we have no authentic data on what the original Reiki teacher Mikao Usui actually did. Some stories say that he only meditated, some say that there were symbols involved, but there is no clarity. The Usui Reiki symbols and methods in use today have been developed by Mrs. Takata who was a student of Dr Hayashi who was a student of Mikao Usui. For eg, the hand positions were added by his student Dr Hayashi and his student Mrs. Takata. She is respected, but she was a student of a student of the original teacher. So she may not have had access to the entire philosophy that Mikao Usui taught. There is very little literature written by Mikao Usui himself or Dr Hayashi or Mrs. Takata. And then the ‘evolved’ Reiki symbols and names were created by later Reiki practitioners, which in my opinion have created a very big mess.

If you choose to get Reiki or any other type of ‘energy’ initiation then there are two possible issues –

1. The concept of energy initiation is to ‘open’ the aura of the student and then  directly ‘place’ the Reiki symbols and the concepts into the chakra at the base of the neck, ie the Vishuddhi chakra. During initiation you are allowing someone direct and unrestricted access to your energy core. You are letting someone directly manipulate your energy, and this is a very big risk.

The person who is giving you the initiation will first ‘cut open’ your aura using an ‘energy sword’ of one of the symbols. The aura is the protective sheath of the body. Everything from outside is first filtered through your aura and only then can it enter your inner energy core. Opening up the aura means that for the 15 mins or so you are highly susceptible to your environment. You are trusting the teacher to protect you from everything in the environment while the initiation is on. Also you have no protection against the teacher, at that moment he can put whatever he wants into your core energy. This is a very high level of trust and this means that you are basically assuming that this teacher is a Guru and has no energy issues of his own.

And then after the initiation, if the Reiki teacher does not re-seal the aura properly then it is going to be a very serious problem for you. You will ‘leak’ energy and also be susceptible to things which can attack you on the energy levels.

Most Reiki teachers whom I have interacted with are internally unbalanced themselves. I have never had a ‘pleasant energy’ interaction with such people who practice Reiki ie teach and heal others. So when such people who have energy level problems themselves, give ‘initiation’ to others they will most likely mess up with their student’s energy also. Their core energy imbalance can be transferred to the student, and the student will suffer in the future.

Most modern Reiki teachers also do healing on others, and possibly without taking adequate care to protect themselves. And this means that some problems of the clients are also transferred to the Reiki practitioner himself. Most Reiki teachers pick up some level negative energy from the client. Perhaps they do not understand the danger, or are over-confident.

Doctors who deal with physical illnesses protect themselves from their patients, by using masks, gloves, sanitation procedures etc. And the same applies to the practitioners who do ‘energy healing’. Humans suffer because of their own karma and if you are helping others who are suffering because of their own karmic actions, be prepared to be attacked by that negativity. We Jyotishi do readings for others, but we first protect themselves using intensive mantras which we get from our Jyotish Gurus. Jyotish is a Guru-mukhi vidya, ie we have to learn it from a genuine Guru. Also the genuine Karmakandi Brahmins, Vedic or Puranic, who do pujas etc for others also first do a complete set of mantras to protect themselves. Jyotishi, Brahmin or Doctor, anyone who deals with dangerous energies/situations will always be ‘wearing’ energy/ physical shields. Simple eg – I am sure most of you have given Dakshina to a Brahmin for some puja performed. A genuine Brahmin will take the Dakshina items with one flower. He will smell the flower and throw it aside. This is a part of the ‘protection’ mantras which he has used to protect himself from your energy.

The energy world is dangerous. There are entities and energies stronger than the concept of Reiki, so do not feel that just because you have Reiki initiation you are invincible on the energy front.

2. Reiki is basically based on Buddhist concepts, and there are stronger energies around. And this is the second potential problem. Reiki initiation, as it is done today, is a permanent manipulation of your energy. The teacher ‘fixes’ certain energy patterns deep into your energy body. And these patterns have their origin in Buddhism. Mikao Usui was from a Buddhist background and he received this ‘realisation of Reiki’ after a Buddhist system of ritual fasting etc. Reiki, has its roots in Buddhist tantra, so is not universally compatible, especially if you are not a Buddhist practitioner. Some Reiki symbols are even now used in Buddhist tantra and it is not advisable to put these so deep into your energy body. And some symbols are actual Japanese words, the Japanese script is being put into the energy body as a ‘symbol’. Again, do this only if you are sure that this is what you want.

In this blog and otherwise also I have always advised reconnecting with the universal energy flow naturally. and using it naturally.

Your body exists within your Mind/Manas, and not the other way round. The more your Mind is in your control, the more effectively can you work with pure energy. You can Intend anything and everything, the only condition being that your Conscience/Antaratma has to be ok with it, else you will create unbalanced karma.

So if you are already doing your regular pujas or have a naam-mantra from a Guru or if you have a proper Gayatri mantra from a proper yajnopavit sanskar or any other Vidya received formally from a Guru or if you think that in the future it is possible that you will get some genuine mantra initiation from a real Guru then you should not get the Reiki initiation from any random Reiki teacher. As this Reiki ‘initiation’ will then interfere with your real mantra initiations and cause you problems later.

Ultimately the choice is yours and the implications – to enjoy or to endure – are also yours alone.

When i was 18years of age i got my reiki initiation and during master level class our teacher made us do third eye meditation and during which i got my kundalini activated, and went into deep meditative state and he tried hard to get me out of it as he didnt know much about kundalini back then but later he was after me to get past life regression done so to know how n why i got my kundalini activated in first time of third eye meditation but i never did regression .After 7years of it , it again happened on its own but with more intensity ! After that nothing happened other than some other experiences . Since 18years i too m looking for a genuine guru who can help me guide me with all this !

    1. Tejaswini Avatar

      Hi there
      just my personal opinion
‘kundalini activation’ wont happen unless you are actually doing Shri Vidya upasana. ie the kundalini has to move beyond the Manipur chakra.
because in normal humans also it can randomly move between Mooladhar and the Swadhishthan

“third eye meditation” – every Hindu has to focus at the third eye and do his mantra using the breath by default.

“past life regression” – can be disturbing unless it is done by someone who knows how to deal with the mess that it will open up. so check credentials of the practicioner before getting into this.

random flashes of pran are often confused as “kundalini activation”

so do find someone genuine to guide you..

You mean Tantric Buddhist meanings and symbols should not be taken deep into the energy body? Why? What if it is another religion then it is ok?

    1. Tejaswini Avatar

      Hi there
i said what i wrote in the post

do not take in anything into your energy body unless you are sure that this path is the one for you.
eg if you are a practitioner of Buddhist Tantra then you might want to get the symbols into you.

each one should make his /her informed choice. and there is very little real data on what the original Reiki teachers taught.

if you are from India, you might know the ‘Reiki’ scene out here with any random person claiming to be a teacher and giving ‘initiation’ for Rs 1000/-

actually there are several energy methods which do what ‘Reiki’ claims to do, and more.
so if your religion /Guru /Teacher has already given you an initiation of some mantra or anything as per your practices you can use this power to heal etc.

Reiki is not something very unique.

this post is in response to several questions on Reiki.

    Namaste Tejaswini ji,

That was an awesome article on reiki, thank you🙏🏻I wish I had this info decades ago when I got my Reiki 1 & 2 initiations. I was doing my academic studies then. My Reiki Master was also a good friend of mine and we would spend hours discussing spiritual/ metaphysical topics. I learnt a lot from her and waited for over a year for her to become a Reiki Master so that I could get initiated by her. I first learnt about taking energy protection from her. Few coincidences during that time strengthened my desire to become a Reiki channel.

I have had a past life in Japan (few memories which I had in the first 6 years of my life + other events) and my first job had a connection with Japan which sort of triggered a few past life memories (nothing traumatic). While others struggled to learn and memorise the reiki symbols, I learnt them very easily and quickly.

I got a cold a day after my initiation which my Reiki Master put down to cleansing happening in my body. But a strange thing happened after my initiation. I used to have cold hands and feet. After my reiki initiations my body including my hands and feet have always remained warm. Friends who have playfully touched my shoulder have asked me if I had fever. But my body is pleasantly warm without fever. I mean it is not like the heat generated by hot weather and it doesn’t bother me. I have no idea if this is good or bad.

While I have found reiki protection to be effective, it doesn’t seem to work against black magic. So yes, there are energies stronger than reiki. For some unknown reason, after my Ketu MD started, I stopped using reiki much. Before my Ketu MD I was regularly doing reiki and other energy work – mostly on myself, my close family members, animals and plants.

Is there a way to know that a reiki initiation has messed up our energy body?

    Much gratitude

      Hi there
personally i was initiated into the teacher levels. one of my then friends was a Reiki teacher and he insisted that i should get this as it would help me in my practice.
i really had no opinion on it and he seems to know what he was talking about so i got the symbols and all. i am technically a proper qualified Reiki teacher.
but then i realised that the Reiki energy was not as powerful as the mantras that i already knew and used in my life. in all fairness i tried to use it, but i found that my mantras could do the intention faster and with minimal fuss.

as i said, there are stronger and more powerful mantras/ systems than Reiki, so if you already have got such initiations then ‘Reiki’ symbols are really not of much use for you.

if you do not really feel inspired to ‘do’ reiki on yourself or on others. or if you have never really practiced it much. then it is more likely that subconsciously you know that it is of no use to you.
or if you are a practicing Hindu /follower of astik darshan shastra, then best avoid this energy system.

and there is no documentation. so if you wish read more on Mrs Takata, she was the one who popularised it in the west. do a deep search via AI and see what comes up

        Namaste Tejaswini ji,

I have always been a practicing Hindu and Asthik like my parents. You’re right about the subconscious guiding me from something I don’t really need. I had observed this with many things in my life.

I am aware that Mrs Hawayo Takata brought reiki to the west. I think she simplified and altered things to suit the western mindset. There is also nothing much known about the founder Mikao Usui. So yes, you have a good point there.

Few days back I attended an online session on ancestral patterns. They played some instrumental music which carried some special frequency. We participants were supposed to lie down and listen to this music. The person conducting the session did not mention past life regression. I sat and listened to the music and within minutes was taken to an unhappy pastlife. I know a few of my past lives but this was not among them. It was unnerving but I can heal myself. This was the first time a music lead me to a past life.

If possible, can you please write something about ancestral patterns that influence us and how to overcome them. I know doing shraddh/tarpan for ancestors heals us and I have been doing it.

        Much gratitude

    Namaste
I have been initiated into mantra meditation and have a mantra given by my guru.

Over the last few months I was searching for a reiki teacher and finally found one that I trust is going to teach me the right way.

Having read your article I am now confused, I was going to use this method to protect my energy as I work in health industry and feel I always get effected easily with peoples energy.

Given my scenario, what would you suggest?

    1. Tejaswini Avatar

      Hi there
you have a guru who has given you a mantra you which you are using for meditation.
so best ask your guru if you need an additional reiki initiation.

if you are following a buddhist tantric lineage mantra then perhaps the reiki may help you enhance its power.
but if you are following a Vedic lineage mantra then the reiki can clash.

in my personal opinion and experience.
if you are sincerely doing your mantra, u dont need the reiki symbols. you should use your mantra to protect yourself, it is capable of doing it.
request your guru and your mantra devata for the methods to use the mantra actively for protection.

    Namaste Tejaswini Tai,

Thank you for such a profound article as always! This helped answer so many basic questions about Reiki. There are so many Reiki healers especially in the west.

I would like to ask you below question related to a different healing modality to get your perspective and guidance on the same.

I am a software engineer by profession and doing decent there. It was never the profession of my choice. Since my childhood I couldn’t bear the pain of others and kept finding the ways to help alleviate the suffering of people around with my understanding and in my own ways which are rooted into ancient sciences and prayers. Besides I have been doing my personal sadhana (mantra-puja etc) since my childhood and recently got initiated into Kriya-yog. Consciously and unconsciously, I’m always seeking for the ultimate freedom and stay free from any entanglements.

Few years ago, I got in touch with clinical hypnotherapy through a family constellation session. At this point, after witnessing the immense potential, I’m inspired to learn hypnotherapy to understand and improve myself, to help others around and possibly to switch my profession to this one eventually. But I’m not sure of the consequences of doing hypnotherapic healing/counseling for others, either as a free service or for money as a professional, with respect to karma exchange. I’m not able to decide if it is a good thing for me to learn such a modality which includes inner child healing, removal of negative/dark force energies, rrgression and PLR, organ regeneration(if I could get into medical part of it) and other mundane things.

Can you please share your thoughts on this? 🙏🏼

I have one more request. I’m from Kolhapur, in Kolhapur as of now and would be very happy to go for in person consultation if any of your family is still practicing it. I remember you mentioning about hailing from astrologer family from Kolhapur… if possible. Kindly let me know 😊

    🕉 Tat-Sat!

      Hi there
do not dismiss your profession so casually. you are there by a design which you yourself chose for yourself before you were born.

why should you feel that you ” cannot bear the pain” of the others around you? it is their karma. you can help them of course, but this level of emotional response?

re – Kriya yoga. there are several ‘variants’ of this also.
eg 6 times Om as one inhales/ exhales and ‘looking’ at all the 6 chakras in sequence.
eg – reciting ‘Hongsho’ in specific patterns
eg – reciting Om 6 times while looking only at the ajnya
      etc etc etc
no one really knows what was taught by Sh. Lahari Mahashaya, except perhaps Sh. Vanmali Lahari’s direct disciples.

how can i or anyone else answer this question?
if you want to ‘heal’ others, it is your decision.

Jyotish is different as you get mantras to protect yourself from the karma of other people.
but i really cannot comment on ‘healing modalities’.

      i am not from Kolhapur

most of my family members stopped taking clients as we do not have any reliable genuine Brahmins around us.
the process is that the Jyotishi has to study the chart and prescribe the pujas which then the Brahmins have to perform, thats how the client gets relief.
