There was a question thus this short post on analysing the Khara navamsha.
As per the classics the Khara navamsha is counted from the Birth degree /Lagna. It is the 64th navamsha from the ascendant degree. Thus the Khara navamsha lies in the 8th house. Generally we use Khara to find out the time of death. But apart from this final event of this life, we can also use the Khara for understanding certain other ‘ending’ type of events during the lifetime.
In some classics, it’s given that the Khara navamsha should be calculated from the birth Moon. And in some books it says that we have to calculate it from the birth Sun also. So we can extend this concept and apply it to all the planets in the chart. Thus the 64th /Khara navamsha from a planet will be in the 8th house from that planet. And we will use this to predict endings or complete transformations regarding the results of that planet.
In my personal observations, the Khara navamsha of the Lagna/ascendant degree, Lagnesh/ascendant lord and Yogakarak/highest functional benefic planet are the most vulnerable and must be analysed. Next in vulnerability are the Khara of the Sun and the Moon. Khara of Rahu and Ketu are also useful for determining karmic endings. Then the Khara of the rest of the planets.
eg. if you know that you are going to study for a degree in the next 3yrs, then note the Khara navamsha from the 5th lord. Check if there are going to be transits of functional malefics or the slower graha Saturn, Rahu, Ketu and Jupiter in this area of the zodiac in the next 3yrs. If so these times can creates issues in your education.
So open your birth chart and calculate the 64th navamsha from the ascendant degree and every birth planet in your chart. (Navamsha analysis needs the exact birth time.)
This table from CS Patel’s book can help you do this faster.

Here are some techniques from the standard books which you can use to begin your analysis,
1. Transit of a functional malefic over the Khara navamsha of the planet (P) you are analysing gives unfavourable and often life changing results connected to the significations of the planet (P). Every ascendant has specific planets who act as functional malefic (post here). Eg for Cancer or Libra ascendants, Jupiter is a malefic force who can give stress on the physical levels.
2. Also transits of slow moving planets, eg Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu give unavoidable and life changing results. Eg. If you have Ketu transiting the Khara navamsha counted from your 5th lord then some sort of separation should be expected in the keywords of the 5th house. Eg, this can give a breakup with your boyfriend. Or your child may go away to another city for higher education.
3. Note the navamsha sign lord (A) of the planet (P) you are analysing and the corresponding Khara navamsha sign lord (B). If these two (A and B) are enemies, neutrals or friends accordingly the results indicated by the planet (P) in question will be short, medium or long lived. This will be a life time pattern. You have to calculate the friendships as per the individual horoscope, using the concept of permanent and temporary friendships (post here).
Eg. if you have your Jupiter in 2deg Aries then he will be allotted to the 1st Aries navamsha which lies in Aries itself. Aries is ruled by Mars. The 64th Navamsha from this 1st Aries navamsha is the 1st Scorpio navamsha which is allotted to Cancer. Cancer is owned by the Moon. Now in the birth chart, you have to calculate the friendship between Mars and Moon. This relationship will affect the results of Jupiter in the chart. If Mars and Moon are friends then the results given by Jupiter will last a life time. eg a education degree which gives you a lifetime of gains. And if they are enemies then the results will be for a shorter duration. Eg you might start a project but then you would be forced to close the project before time.
3. Note if there is any planet (C) placed in the Khara navamsha zone of the planet (P) you are analysing. If this planet (C) is a functional malefic for your horoscope then the results indicated by the planet (P) will be cut short suddenly. It will happen in an unexpected manner and the experience will be traumatic. If you do have such a planet, do be very careful with its significations.
Eg. let’s continue the example, suppose your Jupiter is in 2deg Aries. Then note if there are any planets in the 0 – 3.20deg stretch of Scorpio. If your 8th lord (a functional malefic) lies in this zone then you should be careful with Jupiter and the results he promises in your life as they can be cut short suddenly. Eg your college professor agrees to be your guide but then suddenly resigns which affects your project.
4. Now note the 8th house D1 sign and the Khara navamsha sign for the planet (P) you are analysing. Eg – continuing the example. The 8th sign from the example Jupiter is Scorpio and the Navamsha is Cancer. So you should be prepared for unpleasant results related to your Jupiter when malefic planets transit the Scorpio navamsha in Cancer sign also.

5. Calculate the 22nd Dreshkona in the D3 from the planet (P) you are analysing. And calculate its Khara/ 64th navamsha in the D9. If by chance both these zones of the zodiac lie in the same sign – then this sign and its owner planet will have the most adverse effects for the significations of the planet (P).
This combination, where the 64rd Navamsha and 22nd Dreshkona overlap, is possible only if you have a planet/Lagna degree in the 1st 5th or 9th navamshas of the Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces signs.
If you have a planet/ascendant degree in these specific navamshas then do calculate the 64th navamsha from it. This 3deg 20minutes zone of the zodiac is your weak point. Any planets transiting this zone will trigger significant changes in your life. This 22nd Dreshkona and 64th Khara energy is generally so strong that even other benefics etc aspecting cannot stop the effect.
6. Then there are 3 navamshas for whom the corresponding Khara navamsha gives the maximum malefic results.
- 1st navamsha of Sagittarius – has its Khara in the 1st Navamsha of Cancer which is ruled by Cancer.
- 5th navamsha of Gemini – has its Khara in the 5th Navamsha of Sagittarius which is ruled by Leo.
- 9th navamsha of Pisces – has its Khara in the 9th Navamsha of Libra which is ruled by Gemini.
If you have a planet/Lagna in these navamsha areas then do pay attention to the transits of any malefic planets over their corresponding Khara navamshas. This transit can potentially be a very damaging period in your life.
These were just a few techniques from the standard books on the Khara navamsha analysis. You have to read more books and learn more techniques. Also apply them to your sample charts. Jyotish is theory and practice together so start learning astrology systematically
There are multiple techniques in Jyotish. These are used to cross check the predictions and to ensure that we do not scare ourselves or our clients in the process. Navamsha analysis is a compulsory. If your regular astrologer gives you readings with just the birth chart and without checking the Navamsha chart, then in my opinion, you should ask someone else to read your horoscope.
