All Amavasya tithi are the most powerful lunar days. All the 12 Amavasya in a Vedic year are high energy events which genuine followers of Sanatan Dharma will always try to harness. And the 4 Amavasyas of the Chaturmaas progressively build the energy, culminating in the most powerful Ashwin amavasya, Deepawali.
The first amavasya of the Chaturmaas is the Ashadh Amavasya, we do pujas of the Deepak on this twilight/ night. Then the Shravan Amavasya is the Pithori Amavasya, we do pujas of the 64 Yogini yantras on this twilight/ night. Then the Bhadrapad Amavasya, we do pujas of the Pitrudevata, this is the Mahalaya. And then the Ashwin amavasya is the Deepawali Amavasya the most powerful Amavasya of the Chaturmaas. The power of these Amavasyas is in part derived from the Sun and Moon being together in Cancer – Ashadh, Leo – Shravan, Virgo – Bhadrapad and culminating in Libra – Ashwin signs/ rashi. (The lunar months should be calculated as Amavasyant or Amant)
On the esoteric level, the Deepawali utsav is the Jnyandeepika utsav. We light a lamp, a deepak on the evening twilight (the Sayam sandhyakaal is a powerful time even on normal days). This symbolises the pure Knowledge, Jnyan.
One thing which always irks me, is people randomly saying Diwali is a ‘festival, celebration… ‘ It is not a mere ‘festival’! At least the followers of Sanatan Dharma, Hindus, should understand its power as a Utsav of Sanatan Dharma. Thus this post. This is not beginner material, but we Hindus should at least know where this power comes from.
Utsav उत्सव is a Sanskrit word which means – beginnings, intention, focussed desire, the fulfilment of a wish, passion, elevation, blossoming, opening, pure happiness, the culmination of a desire, a bold start of a project, etc. It does not just mean a mere celebration or a casual festival as is currently understood. We must all learn Sanskrit, if we want to know who we really are.
Who is a Hindu, really? What is the basic condition for a follower of Sanatan Dharma? We consciously follow the 4 Purush Artha. We work to achieve – Dharma, Artha, Kaama and Moksh, these are the four possible aims in life for a conscious living being. (Dharma, Artha and Kaama are aims linked to the material and spiritual. Moksh is the aim linked only to the spiritual.)
Choose what you want. Sanatan Dharma is the freedom of choice. This Amavasya can grant whatever you want. So do Intend and do the pujas so that you power your desire and get what you want.
- We, householders/ Gruhast, should choose – money, spouse, children, happy family life, health wealth, power and happiness of every sort. We should think of them as gifts from the Devi and be grateful to Her.
- Sanyasis, ie people in Sanyas ashram will choose Moksh.

This Deepawali night has such intense energies that we do not sleep on this night. If you cannot stay awake for the entire night, then at least stay up till midnight. All mantras of the Devi will give powerful results on this twilight and night, especially in the midnight.
For regular householders do all the Devi pujas as per your traditions, family culture. And if feel inclined to, recite the Shri Sukta but before the sun sets. And do mental recitation of the Devi Laxmi mantra108 times,
- “Om Shreem Hreem Shreem, Kamale Kamalalaye Praseeda Praseeda, Om Shreem Hreem Shreem, Mahalaxmyaii Namah”
On this Deepawali amavasya, the Sun and the Moon are both in Libra. And the Sun is debilitated in Libra, Tula rashi is the neech rashi for Surya. Sun represents the individual self ego at the lower level and also the Universal Atma at his higher level of functioning. This means that the power of the limited self ego is the minimum on this one Amavasya. This means that your likes, dislikes, attachments etc are on the minimum. It is easier to focus. So if you work for it, it is easier to wake the kundalini, to realise pure jnyan on this night or intend for material wealth, power, etc. So pujas to get what you want. All this is easier on this one night.
Libra is the sign of perfect balance. Two things are perfectly balanced. Libra is the most esoteric sign of the zodiac, with a very specific meaning in Shri Vidya/ Vedant. (Samadhruttulaputya Nyaya refer Ishwar Pratyabhinya) Moksh or Jnyan or Shri is possible only when you are able to balance the two fundamental concepts – ‘Underlying Existence’ and ‘Visible Experience’. Existence is the Shiva, called Aham, or Subject. And Experience is the Devi, also called Idam or Object. When these two concepts, Aham and Idam, Subject and Object, Shiva and Devi are perfectly balanced does the light of pure Knowledge or Jnyan or Shri shine. In short when you are completely convinced to the core of your being that there is no difference in the Subject and the Object you are Atmajnyani Mahapurush, you are Mukt.
And this is the balance which is represented by the Libra sign. And if you do a detailed study of the horoscopes of the Atmajnyani Mahapurush, the Sat Gurus, you will alway find Libra to be very strong in their charts, in one way or the other.

Your energy body has 7 chakras from Mooladhar to sahasrar and 3 main nadis, ida pingala and sushumna. The Sushumna runs from the Mooladhar to the Brahmarandhra at the ‘centre’ of the Sahasrar chakra. The Ida and Pingala run between the Ajnya and the Mooladhar chakras. The Sun is linked to the Pingala nadi and the Moon to the Ida nadi. This much is common knowledge.
Now here is a basic concept of Shri Vidya put in very simple words.
The Moon generates pure Desire. This essence of pure Desire is called Amrut. And the Sun, limited self ego, uses up this power of pure Desire and converts it into binding karma with its binding karmic fruit. And then the karmic fruit even more strongly binds the your soul to this cycle of birth death and rebirth. And this process happens at the Mooladhar chakra where the Ida and Pingala meet. And this process is an eternally continuous cycle. This is the reason why we ignore the underlying Constant Reality and focus only on the Changeable Experience. This continuous process also acts like a lullaby, it keeps the Kundalini asleep at the Mooladhar chakra. She ‘dreams’ of the creation. And for 99.99% of humans, the energy of self identification, the Kundalini, lies dormant at the Mooladhar chakra.
This desire – karma – karmaphal cycle can be broken only when the Kundalini ‘wakes up’ and rises from the Mooladhar to the Sahasrar. That is, when your limited self ego expands and becomes the infinite Eternal Shivah. You become Self Aware. As your Kundalini moves smoothly and finally merges with the Shiva at the Sahasrar, you will realise Moksh. Moksh is the intelligence to understand the Foundational Reality, the Truth pervading through everything. This event is called – ‘the rise of kundalini’ or the ‘understanding of Shuddha Vidya’ or ‘claiming of pure Jnyan’ or ‘emergence of pure Shri’. And this can happen only when the ‘Sun and Moon’ are together, which happens only on an Amavasya.
Now let’s use the Shri Vidya concepts to understand the power of the lunar days, tithi.
There are the 2 sets of 15 tithi in a lunar month. 15 in the Shukla paksha, the bright fortnight and 15 in the Krushna paksha, dark fortnight. And each tithi has its own tithi devata. (The Pratipada, Dwitiya, Trutiya, Chaturthi, Panchami, Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Trayodashi and Chaturdashi, which occur in both the Shukla paksha and the Krushna paksha. So these are 14 X 2 = 28 tithis. And the Purnima tithi and the Amavasya tithi. So a total of 30 tithis.)
In the simplest words, the Purnima tithi is linked to Devi Lalita, the complete emergence of Creation/ Object. Thus we worship her Power on the Ashwin Kojagari Purnima. And the Amavasya tithi is linked to the Devi Kali, the complete emergence of the Self/ Subject. The midnight is the Nishita Muhurt, the Muhurt of Bhagwan Mahakaal. So serious sadhaks, those of us, who really know the Vidya and Shaastra will invoke Devi Kali on this midnight.

And each tithi is also linked to one of the chakras of the body. The Amavasya tithi is connected to the Mooladhar chakra. On the amavasya tithi, the Moon is completely absorbed in the Sun. In other words, the Devi is completely absorbed in the Shiva. Thus the Shiva-Shakti are together and willing to give you what you want on this tithi. So do express your real desire and power your intention with pujas of the Devi on this day.
Its symbol is the Deepak, the lamps, that we all light on this day. Awareness is the only real remedy to the problems in life. This is why we all have to do pujas on all Amavasyas and specifically on Deepawali. It is the Jnyandeepika, the Illumination of pure knowledge.

(To understand more of this power, read books on Tantra/ Shri Vidya by genuine Gurus. Try to read books written in Indian languages, not English. English just does not have the words. And if possible do learn Sanskrit. We have to be able to read our own books in the original.)
