Arundhati Darshan in Marriage and in Moksh

Last Updated on October 30, 2024 by Tejaswini

In a recent comment, I came to know that there is a practice of showing the Arundhati star in the skies to the new couple as a part of their Vivah Sankar pujas, in the state of Tamil nadu. And this gave me happiness. Our Maharishis are so utterly fantastic, they have woven the Vedant in every aspect of our lives and in such subtle ways. We are just required to systemically follow the traditions of our ancestors, as even this much guarantees Self realisation.

Rishipatni Arundhati was the wife of Maharishi Vasishtha. She is considered as the symbol of devotion, loyalty and love to the husband. She is the ideal wife, pativrata पतिव्रता. In the skies the couple – Vashishtha and Arundhati are represented by the twin stars in the Saptarshi constellation. Their modern names are Alcor and Mizar in the Big bear constellation, in the northern skies.

The modern meaning of this Arundhati Darshan, ‘seeing the Arundhati star’, as is currently understood in Tamil Nadu is that the lives of the husband and wife have to now revolve around each other. They have to support, respect, love etc each other. This is an auspicious thought, which helps them start their married life, Gruhast ashram in a beautiful way.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

The Itihas Mahabharat gives the actual meaning of the Arundhati darshan. And it is this – the wife following the husband is auspicious. The Bhishma parva chapter occurs right before the Mahabharat war. In this chapter, Maharishi Vyas describes the terrible omens/ Shakun which indicate that the war is going to be a tragic event. In this, Maharishi Vyas says that Arundhati has moved in front her husband Vasishtha in the skies and this is a sign that there will be a calamity in the near future. (If you have the Mahabharat with you, do read it. If you do not have the book, then buy a set from the Gita press, they are available in the original Sanskrit, translated to other Indian languages. It is the Pancham Ved.)

This is one way of understanding the Arundhati darshan and it is applicable for a gruhastashrami/ householder. The newly married couple now follow this Arundhati darshan in their life together and it will bring auspiciousness.

But our Rishis were extraordinary and so there is a second meaning to this Arundhati darshan. And this is applicable to every follower of Sanatan Dharma. And who is a follower of Sanatan Dharma? – Anyone who says that his ultimate goal is to realise Moksh, either in this current life or a million lives later, sooner or later. A follower of Dharma wants to realise the Self, this is his ultimate desire. And for this to happen, the only route is the Vedant.

The Arundhati darshan nyaya is the fundamental principle on which the entire Vedant, the Jnyan Kaand of the Ved, the Upanishad, is based.

In the phrase ‘Arundhati darshan nyaya’.

  • Arundhati – is the star Alcor. This is a tiny star which is often difficult to see in the skies.
  • Darshan means – to see clearly. Clarity on the intellectual level. The unobstructed perfection of thought which is supported by the Ved.
  • Nyaya means – the ‘logic supported by the Ved’.

The Upanishads do not reveal the Parabrahma directly. The Parabrahma cannot be directly revealed, it is highly subtle. The Self, the Subject, the ‘I Am’ is the Eternal foundation. This is very subtle, extremely difficult to grasp. And the ordinary mind of the aspirant is used to seeing big, visible, things and it cannot grasp the subtlety of the Parabrahma directly. This ignorant mind has to be prepared, made capable of grasping, holding on and then claiming this Atma jnyan.

So the Guru has to use the Arundhati Darshan Nyaya.

Arundhati is a very faint star in the skies, almost invisible. So in the wedding, it is shown in steps, first the north direction, then the bigger stars, the Big Bear /Saptarshi constellation, all which are easier to locate in the skies. Then the Vasishtha star, this is now smaller than the entire constellation. And then finally almost invisible Arundhati star, which is very faint in the skies. But as these steps have been followed, from the grosser to the subtle, now the Arundhati star can be easily seen. Similarly the Upanishad starts off with the grosser concepts and then slowly but surely takes the student to the Self.

th-1461781122

The Atmajnyani Guru first teaches the student about the Annamaykosh, the gross physical body, the sthool sharir. This is visible and the concept is also easy to grasp.

Then he shows the disciple the sookshma sharir, the astral energy body. This sookshma sharir has three sub layers.

  • Sublayer one is the Pranmaykosh, the sheath where the vital energy/ Pran moves in the Nadi channels.
  • Sublayer two is the even subtler Manomaykosh, the part of the ‘mind’ called Manas. Here the Manas, creates and holds on to ideas, concepts and accordingly feels attracted or repelled by these ideas that it has generated itself. This can be called as an ‘ideating mind’.
  • Then the Atmajnyani Guru takes the shishya to the ‘discriminating mind’, the Buddhi, the refined mind, this is called the Vijnyanmaykosh.

Exactly following the Arundhati darshan nyaya. Leading from the gross to the subtle, the Teacher shows the disciple the third body, the causal body, the Karan sharir. This has one sub layer – the Anandmaykosh. This is called the ‘sheath of ignorance’ for a regular human. It is here at the very core of the personality that the confusion regarding the Self resides. This sheath has the ‘darkness of self ignorance’.

Then Guru makes that final jump and points towards the ever pervading Self, the Parabrahma to the disciple. And as the disciple sees it, he understands it, he claims it as his own Self and his journey is complete.

This is the Arundhati Darshan nyaya.

One thing that all students of Vedant must remember is that ‘anand’ does not mean the emotion of happiness as is translated in English. This is the greatest mistake which creates an expectation in the mind of the student and for several aspirants this mistake puts a stop to all further evolution. This is a critical mistake which can become fatal, so keep your understanding clear. Emotions are a part of the Manomaykosh. The student handles the challenges of the Manomaykosh in the early stages of the spiritual quest. Only after the Manomaykosh is handled successfully does the subtler Vijnyanmaykosh become accessible and after this is understood fully does the Anandmaykosh become available for discussion. And only after that comes the Atma.

‘Anand’, in Devbhasha Samskrutam, actually means the ‘incoming intelligence’. ‘Nand’ means intelligence. The prefix ‘aa’ indicates the incoming, rise, grasping, claiming. Claim the Parameshwar as the Self is Anand. That is, if you can say, ‘I am the Atma, I am the Eternal, I am the Existence, I am the Knowledge, I am the Pure Intelligence, I am Limitless, I am the ever Auspicious, I am the Substratum of this Creation, I Am ’, with full confidence, with full understanding, without the least bit of self-doubt, it means that you are now an Atmajnyani Mahapurush, a Guru.

So as a realised soul, claims his Identity, the Anandmaykosh gets illuminated by the light of Intelligence, Atma Jyoti and thus now it becomes the actual intelligence filled layer, ‘Anandmaykosh’ in the real sense.

Back to the marriage event. This Sanskar, ‘appropriate action’, is the entry into Gruhastashram, householder life. The new couple will now follow the Vedpurva, do karmakaand. They will think of the Arundhati star example and have loyalty, respect and love for each other. With time they will have children, pass on their learnings to the next generation. Then they will retire, Vanprasth, and do Upasana as per the Vedpurva. Finally they will enter Sanyasashram and start with the Jnyan Kaand of the Vedant, ie read the Upanishad under the guidance of a Guru. Now, they will understand the real meaning of the Arundhati star that they were shown at their wedding maybe 30yrs ago. Now, they will follow the Arundhati darshan nyaya in the real sense and realise the Self.

Our Maharishis made sure that the newly weds are made aware of the Arundhati darshan nyaya concept at the exact point of the entry into the Gruhastashram itself. (As you know, after the child stage, Balyashram, the person has a choice, either take up Sanyas ashram now or first go through Gruhast and Vanprasth and then take up Sanyas ashram.) The energy / intention of this foundational Nyaya is yoked to the power of the Vivah Sanskar. This in preparation for their eventual Sanyasashram. As they go through their married life consciously holding to one meaning of the Arundhati star, the other subtle meaning is also active and ready in their subconscious.

Our Sanatan Dharma is beautiful, every action is meaningful. Our nation, Bharat is beautiful, because our culture is based on the Ved. So do follow your traditions, whatever your grandparent generation did, do follow it as much as you can. These actions have multiple layers of meanings, which you may or may not realise at that time, but their ultimate purpose is always to lead you to your Self.

      Hi there
      thank you 🙂

i think it was you who first mentioned this practice.
this is a very foundational concept and every student of the vedant knows it. and i was delighted to read that they are doing this at the wedding time itself.
the arundhati darshan nyaya is extensively used in the Brahmasutra also,
eg in ikshayadhikaranam it is used to defend the vedantic teachings against the sankhya purvapakshi.

Edit: if you feel like it, do share this post with those who have done this darshan on the marriage day, they also might appreciate the real power of this tradition

The moment i read this post – i did just that – shared it with my cousins and friends who had this Darshan during their weddings.

I had shared many of your posts in the past as well – the one on pacha karpooram – camphor – immediately comes to mind.

Many of them are also ardent readers/admirers of your blog. We look forward to and lap up your posts – as and when u post – as I’m certain everyone in this forum does

Not only do we lap up, we also follow/ practise, to the extent we are capable of. A few of my cousins and I regularly recite the Sri Suktam during the Sandhya Kaalams and Mid-day, thanks to your
introducing us to this priceless treasure. Also, Gayatri Mantra. Because u said so, they were convinced that it was not just acceptable but also meant for the girls too – to be recited from age 6 – thrice a day – 108 * 3 – so that – both boys and girls – can attain a certain Shakthi – reach a certain “State”- by age 27.

Just last week – when I told my very aged aunt – about my reciting Gayatri Mantra – she said she didn’t know girls could also do that – she had tears in her eyes when she recalled how her mother used to say – evil stuff/spirits just can’t go near a person/place where Gayatri is being chanted. She also blessed me to continue the practice always.

Thank you so much for all that you are and all that you share with us.

        Hi there
we have lost a lot of genuine information because of the systematic slaughter of our Brahmins. this is the greatest loss to humanity.
earlier brahmins would only teach or perform pujas and only accept dakshina. and even a small lump of dough was the dakshina.
they were dependant on the temples they were associated with or gifts from the kings etc.
all stories in panchatantra begin with ‘there was a poor brahmin’.
even the upanishads have stories where poor brahmin comes to king for money to run the gurukuls etc.
the entire yajnyavalyka episode in Bruhataranyak starts with him taking the cows and gold offered by the king janak because he needed the money for the gurukul.

i think small temples would have maybe 5 families and large temples would have maybe 50? in any case, a very small population of brahmins and that too was destroyed.

so today we are left with the bare remnants of information /wisdom.
once my Guru said that even if there were 5 genuine Brahmins in Bharat, it would be sufficient to make us the world power again.

        anyways,
in my personal opinion. if you feel that you should do a puja/ mantra etc. think over it, visualise the deity etc, and observe your dreams etc for auspicious signs. if you get these go ahead.
and always with the feeling of samarpan. tell the deity that – i am the number 1 idiot on this planet, but i deeply adore you and that is why i am doing this, for your love. be egoless in this part of your life, for these 10mins. do not let pride enter your mind here. only then the things will work out beautifully.

its good that you gave happiness to your aged aunt.

Thank you so so much for those beautiful, treasured words 🙏.

I relate to them – the Gods and Goddesses – as my mother, father, child, friend, Guru – depending on how i feel at a given time – i think of those times as my one-to-one times with them – when i sing to them – as in, reciting the mantras in a song format.

I’ll certainly ensure that i approach the deities with a sense of complete surrender – Samarpan – consciously so – always 🙏.

        Heartfelt gratitude and Pranams

Hari Om, Thank you Tejaswini-ji for this beautiful and complete information connecting everything. Very, very useful. One question – in Tamil Brahmin weddings where Muhurtha is usually early morning or before noon, this ritual is done in broad sunlight – just symbolically but nothing is seen by the couple. This is puzzling and sometimes, priests stop this because the ‘new’ generation couples sometimes don’t appreciate this as they can’t ‘see’ anything at all. Any light you can shed on this and any solutions would be helpful. Regards and Gratitude, Uma

      Hi there
weddings are supposed to be in the early mornings, max by abhijit muhurt.
so that the new bride enters her new home before the sunset. this evening time/ godhuli muhurt is the most auspicious time fr this gruhpravesh. and that is the time Devi Laxmi and the new Gruhlaxmi enter the home.

i too found this a bit funny. they should do the darshan in the night.
the Brahmins can just explain the concept to the new couple during the wedding. and the elders can show it to them at night, at home.
but in any case i dont think the stars are visible, too much light pollution everywhere. maybe they can see the stars on the screens, on some astronomy app.
the idea is that the concept, the name should register in their minds.

This is beautiful. I looked up what the arundhati looks like and i believe it is the same as what we call the “big dipper” in the west. Thank you for explaining the meaning behind this.

I had a question relating to your previous article about relationships and expectations. If one’s chart shows that they will have a difficult marriage or that their partner betray will the marriage, or that the partner’s morally/values do not align, what options does one have?

Even if you do as much as you can to match charts, if the energy in the chart is fixed, to some extent is this unavoidable? You can do the remedies and pray to reduce the intensity of the karma, I understand that. But if you are fated to marry a specific person, can that be changed? Or is it that the person is fixed, but the circumstances can change with the appropriate remedies?

    Many thanks!

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
if your chart shows that there are going to be certian issues with your spouse, then
      1. be alert and change your behaviour so that you do not trigger the issue
      2. do your Devi Laxmi puja or any other puja/ mantra/ daana as per your horoscope so that the intensity of the issue becomes the least possible.

karma cannot be avoided. if some astrologer says that doing something will help u completely avoid the karma, run away from that astrologer.
but you can reduce it to the least possible by your intentions+actions.
the max reduction is when you endure through the karma through your dreams and finish it off.
eg as per charts, if you are to fracture your leg in awake life. but you do your remedies and then it gets reduced to a sprain. and if you are really sincere about the remedies then u experience the fracture in your dreams. and it is endured. karma balanced.

I wanted to ask for your view on something.
Regarding the work I do l knew when I selected the course that I don’t want to do it(over time it has just become a means to earn…I don’t enjoy it and life feels like a drag because we spent half our lives at workplace) but it was told by a family member (an astrologer) that it was what was good for me.
Being strongly influenced by astrology from a young age…I have learnt to fear it(fear of making mistakes and having regrets later on…it has undermined my faith in my feelings/thoughts…as what I felt/feel was/is right for me was/is not supported by the chart).
I want to have a balanced perspective on things …to have astrology as a support and not as something which hinders me in what I want to do.

    Kindly guide.

you have to work on your own mind for this.
if you have become addicted to astrology then i would advise you to stop thinking about it for sometime at least. till you can resolve your emotional dependency on the subject.
emotions should always be under the direction of the intelligence.

    Sorry for going off-topic

Do you know about छठ पूजा ?

What does offering arghya to the Sun during sunset, when it is debilitated rashi-wise and house-wise, represent/signify?

( चैती छठ is also celebrated in Chaitra maas, but the one in Kartik maas is regarded as the ‘main’ one)

    Thank you ma’am.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
chhat puja is celebrated more in Bihar and its adjacent states.
I have not done this puja personally, so cannot comment, specifically. only know that the married women worship the wives of the Suryadev with lots of pujas/ vrats etc in this puja.

a general comment – it is compulsory for all followers of Hinduism /Sanatan Dharma to give Surya arghya. and for both the rising and setting sun.
now most of us have abbreviated this to just the rising sun. but it is to be done twice a day, throughout the year.
and if you read the surya arghya shlok, the water has to have gandha, pushpa and akshata. it is not just plain water.
i personally do extra pujas of Suryadev on Ratha Saptami in Maagh.

if you want you can give away the items if you feel like it. giving daan is always helpful. but only to a temple or to the sea/river or a genuine Brahmin in case you are able to find someone like that.
