To decipher Multiple Spouses

It is quite common to see people indulging in multiple marriages. A sequence of marriage, divorce, remarriage or multiple spouses together at the same time. Thus more complicated for the astrologer to interpret marriage-related questions. A person will have a series of girlfriends/boyfriends, then marriage, perhaps extra-marital affairs, then divorces and re-marriages! Thus we need to look into the horoscope with more care. So lets check out this complicated question of multiple spouses!

First a bit on what is marriage! Marriage is karmic the domain of the 7th house, legal partnerships negotiated by Venus. Romance is more self-centric, the domain of the Sun, girlfriend/boyfriend is seen from the 5th house. For a relationship to be considered to be a marraige, there needs to be a legal alliance, a contract, an understanding, before a witness. This can be a traditional marriage, or a marriage in court, or (this is stretching it) if a child is born or even conceived/aborted without a formal marriage, this child is considered as the witness to the marriage.

You can also calculate the number of marriages through palmistry. See the edge of the palm of the dominant hand, right under the little finger/Kanishta, the space between the heart line and the base of the finger. Count the number of well defined horizontal lines, that is the number of spouses indicated in this life for you.

For marriage, the first and foremost planet to analyse is Venus – He is the natural ruler of the 7th house of the zodiac, Libra. Wherever he may be located, Venus will have an influence on the marriage alliance. Generally Venus is considered to be the agent of ‘Wife’, but I have seen Venus indicating the ‘Husband’ too, thus I consider him to indicate ‘Spouse’ in general.

  • If the Venus is within 15 degrees of any other grahas including Rahu/Ketu then he may grant multiple spouses. If Venus is with Rahu the spouse will be ambitious, interested in social mobility and breaking the rules! Moon with Venus will give an emotional, sensitive, maternal type of partner. A Venus alone will give a more balanced partner.
  • If Jupiter is with Venus, then multiple spouses are almost certain, you might see a rich man having 3-4 wives, each wife in her own house and established properly.
  • Even the headless graha Ketu with Venus can grant multiple partners, the narrative will be widowhood/abandonment/divorce/separation thus the new spouses.
  • Then Venus with any other graha, especially in the 5th house will give multiple spouses.
  • In the 9th divisional chart/Navamsha, check out the placement of Venus, if alone or with multiple planets. This indicates the sub-conscious expectation of marriage and the spouses.

Now a look at Jupiter. The planet of expansion is deeply connected to marriages and your spouses. He  is taken to represent just ‘husband’, but I have seen him indicate ‘wife’ too so I consider him as an agent of ‘spouse’.

  • Jupiter if occupying the 7th from ascendant or even the 7th from birth moon sign causes expansion of the marriage event giving multiple spouses. Again the character of the partner can be judged as per the nature of the planet accompanying Jupiter.
  • Jupiter if conjunct with the owner of the house 7th from ascendant or 7th from birth moon will grant multiple spouses.
  • Jupiter in the 7th house in the Navamsha chart indicates the potential for multiple marriages, but the D-1 must support in some way for it to be actually manifested.

The houses which indicate the next marriage partner is always counted 8 houses from the house indicating the current marriage partner. This is how it works,

  • 7th house indicates first spouse
  • 2nd house represents the second spouse
  • 9th house represents the third spouse
  • 4th house represents the fourth spouse

If you count these houses from the ascendant sign in your birth chart D-1 you will get the physical reality, the environment and the circumstance of the marriage partner. The physical attributes, looks, family situation etc.

If you count these houses from the birth moon sign you will get the emotional context of every spouse. Will the marriage event be emotionally fulfilling, secure, comfortable and stable. The reality of the intimacy between the two. And the perception regarding the success or otherwise of the marriage contract. This is an important analysis as sometimes you see marriages doing well on the physical front but collapsing on the emotional fronts. Or you may see a physically abusive marriage continuing well because despite the physical abuse the chart offers emotional stability!

Then finally if you count these houses in the Navamsha/D-9 chart you will understand the expectations and the sub-conscious reasons behind every spouse. D-9 is the total astral experience, this may or may not be fully manifested in the real material world represented by the D-1 depending on several trigger factors. Eg, if the D-9 shows possibility of a second spouse but the person and his first spouse do astrological remedies or engage in mantra jaap or even good karmas together the sub-conscious possibility of the second spouse may not materialise in the real life.

The 7th house is what mirrors you in every aspect so the first spouse is the most important in this way. This is the house of balance, alliance and legal partnerships. But if the karma of this house gets completed by death/divorce/abandonment etc. then the 2nd house gets active. The second spouse is more likely to be someone strongly connected to his/her family lineage, interested in interacting with family/friends, food/drink and wealth. The typical 2nd house keywords! Or you might meet this person in such a setting of song and dance. In case this karma of second spouse also gets completed within this lifetime then you get to the third spouse. This is more likely to be a more philosophical personality, more mature, more into public and visible roles in the society etc, apply the keywords of the 9th house to decipher this personality. And so on, counting the next 8th house to get the nature of the next spouse.

These second onwards spouses take on the traits of the 2nd, 9th, 4th and onwards houses, thus mirror your family, paternal figures, maternal figures etc check out the keywords of these houses. Thus afford another chance for you to revisit this house (now in this very intimate relationship) and resolve the karmas related to it quite beautifully.

Now you know the house you need to see for checking out the spouse, first spouse is 7th house, second spouse is 2nd house and so on. The next factor that you need to see is the owner of the house, where is he placed in relation to the house and if he is comfortable or not. And also the planets placed in the house. These will add more details to your analysis. For example a Ketu in the 7th will give a disinterested partner who may abandon you, then a Mars in 2nd will give a more athletic out-going and passionate partner number two.

But remember, the ‘partnership’ is not just limited to a human actual person. This may be a concept or a way of life or a philosophy or a Deity. Each one of us has a significant partner, our mirror.

So this may also interpreted as, after the completion of the 1st marriage, the person may immerse himself in his own family affairs or spend his time with family/friends, or in making more money! May not remarry and consider this lifestyle to be his significant partnership. Or after the completion of his second marriage karma with his second spouse, turn to religion, philosophy and the divine! He may start a new thought process of helping the human race, get into social service and consider this to be his significant partnership.

To interpret anything to do with marriage, considerable delicacy and understanding of the social norms and culture is necessary. If additional ‘marriages’ are indicated they will happen. If the society approves of divorce/remarriage, or having multiple husbands/wives then these additional spouses will be legitimately in the open. However if the society does not allow (check position of Saturn to see this aspect of the marriage/spouse event), the additional spouses will happen but in secret and will be denied in the public life.

Ultimately we choose our partners based on our sub-conscious expectations. If you are scared of marriage, expect a similarly afraid partner. If you are desperate to get a spouse, expect a similarly frustrated person as your spouse. However if you are content and a balanced personality you will marry a similar happy person and make the most of your married life!
