Raj Yog in the horoscope

There are so many combinations on the Raj yog that it often becomes confusing for students. To begin with remember this simple concept, “Any combination of the Kendra and the Kona energies is a potential Raj yog”.

The Kendra houses are the 1st 4th 7th and 10th. These are the pillars on which the entire horoscope is raised. There is one house from each of the trikons, Dharma 1st, Arth 10th, Kaam 7th and Moksh 4th trikon-s. The potential of your horoscope is summarised in these 4 Kendra houses. If you understand the Bhavat Bhavam concept, the importance of these 4 houses will be clear. The 7th house is the only house directly linked to the 1st. And the 4th and 10th are directly connected via the bhavat bhavam to the 7th house. The personality expresses itself mainly through these 4 houses in a solid manner.

The Kona houses are the three, 1st 5th and 9th. The 1st house is a Kona as well as a Kendra house and interlinks the energies of these two types of houses. It is the pivot around which the entire horoscope turns. The three Kona houses together are actually the Dharma trikon. This represents the power of the personality and how you use it to ever-evolve yourself. This interlinked 1/5/9 axis of genius, creativity, foundations, luck, blessings and auspicious merits is the real creator of your dynamic personality. In this axis, one aspect of your personality creates the second which again creates the third which cyclically feeds back to the first, in an ever evolving spiralling manner.

  • 1st house –  the overall personality, the overall environment, role in society, will power, health, longevity etc, basically a snapshot of you
  • 4th house – the security, comforts, emotional health, nurture, mother, childhood experiences, basic education, house, lands, vehicles etc.
  • 5th – divine intelligence, creativity, expression of creativity, children, self-ego, recognition as an individual, spirituality
  • 7th house – husband/wife, partnerships, legal relations, business, fertility, passion, foreign travels, business rivals too
  • 9th – all the support you will receive from all sources, your beliefs, patrons, peers, paternal figures, religion, ancestors, your past life merits etc
  • 10th house – social presence, power, prestige, profession, salaries, actions done to resolve karma, power, authority in public etc.

The concept of Yog-karak is also derived from this. If a planet simultaneously owns a Kendra and a Kona house then he is capable of giving a lot of positive results in life. He then called a Yogkarak. This one planet placed well can confer ‘Raj yog’ on his own.

www

So open your birth chart. If there any connections between the following, you have a ‘Raj-yog’ in your chart. It is as simple as that. (There are other combinations which are also called Raj Yog, but the common factor is that the energy of the Kona or Kendra has to be involved.)

  • 1st lord with 4th lord
  • 1st lord with 7th lord
  • 1st lord with 10th lord
  • 1st lord with 5th lord
  • 1st lord with 9th lord
  • 4th lord with 5th lord
  • 4th lord with 9th lord
  • 5th lord with 7th lord
  • 5th lord with 10th lord
  • 7th lord with 9th lord
  • 9th lord with 10th lord

These connections can be,

  1. Exchange of houses, also called parivartan (post here)
  2. Kendra/Kona lord occupying a Kona/Kendra position (one exception is the Kendradhipati combination post here)
  3. Sometimes, even if they are conjunct or even aspecting each other in a positive house then too you can consider them to be in a sort of a Raj-Yog. More the combinations more strong is the yog and more likely to give significant results.

These planets creating the Raj-Yog should be strong and capable of auspicious results. So you will have to check out their Shad-bala, Ishta-bala, Vimshopka,  Ashtakvarga, position in the Navamsha etc depending on your level of study. (There are other combinations too which are called Raj yog, but to begin with, start with this concept.)

www

And it is a very common question is that despite having Raj-yogs in a chart why do they fail to realise their promise. Here are some points which you can use in your study.

  1. Power of the ascendant sign. This sign produces your physical body, the physical environment around you. If the sign is afflicted by malefics or in any way blocked from giving results, or are not capable of auspicious results then the personality and the environment is not strong enough to produce the results of the raj-yog.
  2. Power of the ascendant lord. This graha coordinates between the personality and the environment. The dynamic aspect. He has to be strong to be able to make full use of the potential of the chart. (post here)
  3. Power of the birth Moon. The birth Moon is a major force in your chart, almost equal to the ascendant lord. Analyse him properly before you do anything else. He controls your astral body, emotions, perceptions etc and subtly influences everything around you. Eg you might become the CEO of your company but if your Moon is weak, you will suffer stress and not be able to enjoy this position.
  4. The Dasha-s which never come or which come at the inappropriate time of life. You have to learn Dasha-s very systemically to be able to time events. Vimshottari dasha system has to be learnt in depth. Study at least one more Dasha system in addition to Vimshottari. Always use two Dasha-s systems to cross check your predictions. The potential of the house is triggered only in the appropriate Dasha, which should come at an appropriate time/age. Eg. If the triggering dasha comes at the age of 4yrs age and it is to do with the 5th house. What is the child going to do about his 5th house potential at this age? He might get parental love, be a confident child etc. His parents will benefit to some extent from the child’s chart’s positive energy and thus the child will indirectly benefit. But that is about it. Now if this triggering Dasha were to come at the age of 25yrs then the actual person would have really been able to use his own energies.
  5. Then it is possible that the results may be delivered only in specific mahadashas/ antardashas/ pratyantar dashas. eg. if it were to occur during Rahu Mahadasha then he will take away the successes after his dasha period gets over. So a spectacular rise followed by a rapid descent is seen.
  6. The fine-tuning can be done using transits. These are the regular movements of the grahas in the zodiac. These can be used to exactly pin-point the exact timing of the event within the broader framework of the Dasha.
  7. Next is the divisional charts. You cannot predict only with the birth chart. Eg a beautifully placed Sun in the D1 becomes debilitated in the D9. The potential is hollow, it will not give happiness, instead give inauspicious results, a beautiful apple with a rotten core. You have to analyse the D9 always. And in case the question is specific then the specific DC should also be referred to, eg for profession then the related D 10 too should be seen.

Why does some event occur? Why does some promised event not occur? If it did occur, why did it occur the way it did? Why at this typical intensity? These are questions which make one a good predictive astrologer. Try to learn astrology systematically (post here), analyse your sample charts. Try to match the events in life, like getting a job, marriage, deaths, divorces, birth of children etc with the charts. This is the only way you will learn. Just reading books is not enough. Learning to predict events successfully in the correct perspective comes only by practical practice.

(There was a question on this and I felt it was better to write the answer as a small post.)

Powerful horoscopes and weak horoscopes

Life is Change.

Your birth horoscope remains constant. This is the choice of energies which you chose at the moment of your this birth and is the foundation on which you are going to handle the Changes which this Life is going to bring. You are born at one instant, and the very next instant the change starts. Time and space move on. The planets move on, transiting through the zodiac. The zodiac, the Bha-kaksh itself moves on. These changing energies are basically the Dasha periods and the periodic transits. All these changing energies make patterns with each other and with the birth chart you have chosen. These patterns decide how events unfold in life. And the power of the birth chart decides how you will navigate through these changes. Will you soar or sink?

Your birth chart is the only energy you have and it needs to be studied in depth. I often mention ‘strong’ and ‘weak’ horoscopes in my posts. A strong birth position is very helpful in several ways. Your body/ mind and environment is strong enough to weather the changes which will occur in life. Changes in life are more enabling, you can leap to greater heights using the change events as opportunities. The changes are more auspicious and favourable, and the transitions are easier. You are more confident as your personality and your environment both integrate well and are more complementary. You get support from your inner self and also from the others around you. You are more in control of the situation. You have some say in how it unfolds and you can divert its energy to suit your objectives.

Powerful horoscopes and weak horoscopes

Powerful horoscopes will show the following combinations.

Birth chart, the D1,

  • The Ascendent sign determines your overall personality and your environment. It is best if this sign is occupied or aspected by benefics
  • The ascendant lord, the birth moon and the other benefic planets should be conjunct or aspected by benefics. And preferably placed in a kendra, 1st 4th 7th or 10th or kona 5th or 9th house.
  • Malefics are a source of turmoil in life so it is best if they are either in the upchaya houses, 3rd, 6th 10th or 11th houses. And aspected by benefics, especially Jupiter by his 5th or 9th aspect.
  • If there is a Yogkarak graha for the ascendant sign then this planet should be placed in auspicious house and be capable of giving favourable results. It would be even better if he is aspected or with other benefics.
  • Aspects of benefics on the Ascendant lord, the Birth Moon and the Yogkarak, will naturally increase the power of these planets and also encourage them to behave in an overall auspicious manner. These benefic influences also increase the power of that benefic planet on the overall personality/mind of the person. Eg Jupiter aspecting the Ascendant lord will make this person a genuinely kind and benevolent personality, he will meet others who help him and he too will try to help others in life etc.
  • Conjunctions are important as both planets influence each other and also the sign/house they are placed in. Eg you will see Sun-Mercury conjunctions most commonly in your study charts. If this conjunction is auspicious then it will enhance the powers of the Sun, Mercury, the house/sign they are placed in and also Leo, Gemini, Virgo signs wherever they are placed in the chart.
  • The 6th, 8th, 12th houses are the houses of turmoil, the dusham-sthana (I have written several posts on these houses, do check the index). Planets placed here are in charge of service, servitude, enemies, debts, diseases, traumatic changes, death, losses, dissolution etc. Best is if these three houses are empty. Or occupied by malefics and aspected by benefics so that the turbulence they cause in life is minimised.
  • Kendra and kona houses are the houses which directly link to the main 1st house. Bhavat bhavam principle is an easy way of understanding the importance of these houses. The 1st house is bhavat bhavam for only the 7th house. The 7th house is the bhavat bhavam for both the 4th and 10th houses. So these three houses directly feed into the power of the 1st house. Then the kona houses, 5th and 9th are in the Dharma trikon with the 1st house, are linked in its creative genius /foundation axis. So these two houses also link very deeply into the power of the ascendant sign. Having powerful and beneficial planets in the kendra and kona houses grants the personality more power to navigate life successfully.
  • Exalted planets are an asset in a chart. Also planets placed in their own houses or their mool-trikon signs. These are highly comfortable and willing to give auspicious results. If you have such planets in your chart, they pull up its quality significantly. Especially if the ascendant lord, Moon, Yogkarak or benefics are in such positions they give significant positives in life. Even if the malefics are exalted, they will help you navigate the turmoil they cause or at least you will gain something significant after the troubles are over.

Navamsha chart D9 – Then is using the Navamsha chart to get more insights into your deepest expectations and potential. This analysis is a necessity, but do this only if you have your exact birth time to the minute.

  • Vargottam planets, or the Vargottam ascendant degree indicate that the planet’s outward energy and inward energy is the same, there are no deep-seated conflicts in the personality.
  • Planets placed in the pushkar navamsha generally are auspicious and help in life.
  • If planets shift to their own signs or mool-trikon signs or in their exalted signs etc add more power to face conflicts and rise with every opportunity in life.

Ashtakvarga is another useful tool in astrology. It can be used to gauge the power of a planet or a sign to give auspicious results in life.

  • Planets having more than 4 points in the sign they are placed in at birth are going to be more favourable and auspicious.
  • In case of signs, the signs whose combined score is more than 27 are generally helpful. Those signs which are occupied by benefic planets at birth, or are placed in kendra/ kona, especially the lagna sign should have points more than 27.

Those aspects of life indicated by such planets and signs having such high scores tend to remain stable and non-problematic. Or even if there are problems, their severity is lesser and are more manageable.

Shadbala – in your vedic software, there will be a calculation for the ‘power’ of the planet. These ‘bala’ strength is calculated for the 7 planets, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The strength of the ascendant lord and the birth Moon should be high for overall favourable and enjoyable results in life.

Nakshatra – The lunar mansions are the framework of Jyotish. If you have your vedic astrology software, open it and check out which nakshatra your 9 graha and the rising degree falls in. These 10 Nakshatra energies are going to be more important in your life. Then calculate your Janma nav-tara chart from this post. Check which Tara categories your identified 10 Nakshatra-s fall in. If these fall in the Janma, Sampat, Kshema, Sadhak, Mitra or Ati-mitra Tara categories, then the planets occupying them will be able to give satisfactory results on the subtle/ inner levels.

Powerful horoscopes and weak horoscopes

Now quickly on horoscopes with lesser power or ‘weaker’ horoscopes.

Birth chart, the D1

  • The Ascendent sign occupied or aspected by malefics.
  • The ascendant lord, birth moon and other benefic planets influenced by malefics. Or placed in the dushamsthan, 6th, 8th 12th houses. Or even if in the 3rd house and influenced by malefics. This will increase the number of inauspicious events in life and also the trauma they cause.
  • Malefics aspecting each other increasing their strength to do mischief.
  • Yogkarak graha incapable of giving favourable results, influenced by malefics or debilitated.
  • Aspects of malefics on the Ascendant lord, the Birth Moon and the Yogkarak, will increase the power of that malefic planet on the overall personality/mind of the person. This can aggravate the negative qualities like cruelty, insensitivity, violence etc both in the personality and the environment.
  • Conjunctions with malefics can spoil several aspects of the life all at once. eg Moon with Saturn can cause trauma to the sign/house they are placed in and also Cancer sign wherever it is placed in the chart.
  • Debilitated planets, planets placed in their enemies houses are highly uncomfortable and pull down the power of the chart. Especially if the ascendant lord, Moon, Yogkarak or benefics are in in such positions.

Navamsha chart

  • If planets shifting to the signs which occupy the 6th, 8th, 12th houses of the birth chart D1 become slightly unfavourable.
  • Planets which shift to their debilitated signs or to signs owned by their enemies lose power to do good.
  • I have written several posts on navamsha analysis, do use the index page to locate them if you wish to read.

Ashtakvarga

  • Planets having less than 4 points in the sign they are placed in at birth generally cause difficult changes in life.
  • The signs whose combined score is less than 27 points can also initiate turmoil when transited by malefics etc in life.

Shadbala for the ascendant lord and the Moon if is very low then you cannot ‘enjoy life’. There may be favourable things around you but you cannot use them or derive happiness from them. So do look up the section on ‘planetary strengths’ in your astrology software.

Nakshatra – In your Janma nav-tara chart, if any of your identified 10 Nakshatra-s fall in the Vipat, Pratyak or Naidhana Tara categories, then the planets occupying these Nakshatra will give subtly inauspicious results which will give you anxiety etc on the subtle/ inner levels.

Powerful horoscopes and weak horoscopes

This is a framework post. One placement does not make a reading. You have to look for patterns always. More patterns means more potential for the prediction to actually happen in real life. More powerful patterns add strength to you. More weaker combinations pull down you down. Every chart will have some auspicious and some inauspicious parts, eg if you have a very strong professional life then it is possible that you will have a less joyful home life. One cannot have everything at once. Try to understand your birth chart, your basic personality, your behaviour, your expectations and potential. Jyotish is Illumination, use it to see yourself first, analyse yourself dispassionately. Find out what aspects of life are going to give you successes, follow these. Try to leverage your strengths to grow, take every change connected to these aspects of life as a challenge and grow with it. Try to fortify those parts of life which are going to bring you turmoil, or try to channelise these turbulent energies into more productive things. Every change is an opportunity if only you know how to use it and you have the will to do so.

Friends, the 11th house and Gain

Continuing on the friendly-theme. The 11th house is in charge of your friend-circle, social life, your comforts. The house of gains, Laabh-sthan. लाभ means advantages, benefits, profits, gains, acquisitions, knowledge, enjoyment, attainments, perceptions, meeting, getting, finding, conquering, etc.

This house is gives you tangible benefits, these may be on any level, physical, mental, intellectual, emotional, spiritual etc. But these are gains. You might not appreciate it at that moment but the 11th house always benefits at some level. It’s profits get better with age (upchaya house) just as your investments give better returns with time. Saturn is the natural ruler of the 11th sign of the Zodiac. The ‘karmic punisher’ giving us enjoyments? Sounds strange but is perfectly logical. You gain only when you have performed your job, you get your salary only when you work, you get friends only when you put in your time and energy in the friendship. You have to work on acquiring stuff. And finally to get something you will be required to give up something else.

Friends, the 11th house and Gain

Natural malefics, ie Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, here may give you untrustworthy friends, so be careful about selecting your friends. Trust them only till you have to. You will get temporary friends who will be with you only till they are getting some benefit out of you. But these planets here give you a bold fearless and courageous nature too. So even if you have some unscrupulous friends in your social circle you are more than able to deal with them.

Sun here will give you friends linked in to the government, bureaucracy, politics or high up in the corporate world. These may be self-centred, egoistic, ‘shining’, as per the typical nature of the Sun. So it is best to be on similar equal terms with them so that both of you can benefit from the friendship. Do not let them dominate you. Your father may give you some assets. You will have to work to gain what you desire and you will have all the necessary intelligence, confidence and ability to do so. Opportunities will be given to you to shine, but you have to choose to act. You will get all material benefits, house, cars, property etc which one needs for a comfortable life and more! As time passes these will increase. Generally others are jealous of you and can become hostile even. So guard against this factor. You are practical by nature and ultimately conquer over your ill-wishers.

Mars in the 11th will give you a large friend-circle. Your friends may be connected to sports, or goons, or from the lower sections of the society, the rough types. But he can also cause misunderstandings and arguments between friends. Do not get into risky adventures under the influence of such friends. You will have the courage and the knack of spotting a winner. Any venture you get involved in will profit ultimately. You will have all material luxuries with time. You do want to earn money/ power and you do so with your own efforts, a self-made personality. Disciplined, organised with an active body and logical mind. Do not get caught in unsuitable love affairs, take due care on this front. Essentially noble hearted, you help others in unfortunate circumstances. This position adds power to the entire horoscope, as Mars aspects the 2nd and 6th houses too reducing their malefic influences. His influence on the 5th house is good.

Saturn in this position is generally a very powerful personality. He will give friends who might try to take advantage of you in business or profession. They might want to use your talents but won’t come to your help if you need. Clashes of opinions and later you realise that these are in fact deep seated differences! Your friends will be older than you are or more mature in outlook. Or people from the labour class or the lower sections of the society. People who will demand your time/energy. Be careful as to how much you get involved. You will have material wealth with time and you will attain high material positions too. Serious by nature with a single point focus and very practical, you are hard-working. Your self-control is very high. You can reach the highest point that you set your sights on as once you out yourself on a job you are like a juggernaut, slow and steady, a crushing force impossible to stop or divert. Saturn also aspects the 1st and 8th houses which gives a very stable personality, less prone to catastrophic changes. His influence on the 5th gives a stable intelligence and confidence.

Rahu alone here gives friends who enter your life with a lot of hype. You also desire to mix with them and look forward to exciting times with them. They are charismatic and you are fascinated. They use you and you in your fascination allow it. Till later you realise that they were fakers and they fall deeply in your estimation. The illusions woven by Rahu shatter, these fascinating people vanish from your life, you are sad but a little wiser. Be careful of giving yourself, your assets, your emotions, your time to unworthy people who pose as your friends. You will face disappointment. But this is a upchaya house and all planets here give gains. So as time passes, Rahu will give you all possible material comforts and wealth. Most importantly he will make you Wise. These early experiences with the Rahu-tricksters will later give you complete control over your desires and actions. You will associate with people from all strata, foreigners, religious chaps, shady characters. You will be active, result oriented, fearless, a strategist and ultimately a philosopher. You don’t speak much, but yes, you will write!

Ketu here is very cryptic especially if he is here alone or powerful. Then he does not allow you to gain any material things. You will find your savings/material wealth disappearing, your friends/family vanish, wife/child do not exist for you, the material pleasures become irrelevant and all this does not affect you on any level. This might also mean that you will be cheated by unscrupulous people in life. You will have a rare incisive intelligence, secret knowledge, occult powers etc and you will also use them all, you are fearless. You really gain on the occult and the spiritual levels and this gain too holds no attraction to you! Detachments from all gains. Apathetic to achievements. You are attractive, well dressed, powerful, well-known in society. But you suffer from some secret disease or some secret fear. A powerful single Ketu in the 11th is a highly spiritual placement, you are internally an ascetic. The material desires will pop up briefly (as per transits/Dashas) and then again vanish as if they were never there. You might feel a vague unease or a tenuous memory of that material desire but it too vanishes. If you have such a Ketu in this house, do not commit yourself to any material desire without thinking/ sensing/ feeling it through, wait it out for some time, lest you get bound in an association from which there is no escape and it turns into a weight on your soul and causes real damage.

Every planet performs well here but there are shades. Eg If the planet is aspected by further malefics or debilitated or combust, then you should analyse it in depth before coming to a conclusion. These planets will aspect the 5th house directly from here. (Mars has extra aspects, so will also aspect the 2nd, 5th, 6th houses too. Saturn will aspect 1st, 5th 8th houses and Jupiter will aspect 3rd, 5th, 7th houses from here.) The 5-11 axis is a rather important one in your life. Malefics in the 11th will give good results in the matters of the 11th house matters, but their aspect on the 5th house so can sometimes adversely affect the 5th house matters, love affairs, children, creativity, divine inspiration, direct link to the internal divinity, inner confidence etc. So analyse the 5th house separately.

The Rahu/ Ketu axis operating here gives its typical results, have written two posts on this earlier. If you have Rahu/Ketu axis here do analyse your chart and mediate on yourself before taking life-time decisions. (The dark and bright half concept is ingrained in the Rahu/Ketu axis as they are 180deg away always, so one part of this axis operates, from your sub-conscious as chosen by your higher self, at birth. And the other half operates, in the realm of freedom of choice among the limited options, after birth)

Then if the planet occupying the 11th is debilitated then perhaps you are not a good friend to others. So do pay attention to your behaviour with them, do not cheat or hurt them needlessly lest you create more karmic tangles for yourself.

Jupiter aspects on the 11th house are very beneficial. He can reduce the malefic impact of the malefics or damaged planets placed here. He will polish off their rough edges and make you more philosophical and benevolent in your interactions with your friends/ social circle. ie if Jupiter is placed in the 11th, 5th, 3rd, 7th houses he will have his say in the matters of the 11th house. (Especially if Jupiter influences the single Rahu or Ketu in the 11th house, this combination is an indication of a highly evolved soul, these may grant you Moksh and then make you a Sat-guru for others!)

Friends, the 11th house and Gain

All  the benefics give good results in the 11th house and also exert a positive on the opposite 5th house. (will be modulated as per the aspects etc on them) Let’s run through them quickly.

Moon in the 11th gives material successes, money, wealth etc. It is an easy effortless run. The emotional/ mental states are relaxed. If he is powerful then your family, friends, social circle is good, spouse/ child give you comforts, you will have mostly girl-children. The mother is especially has a very deep effect on your life and you get some benefits from her.

Mercury gives an aptitude for trade or any profession where analytical abilities are required. You can work in any field, from bureaucracy to the scientific or even an astrologer. You have a wide social circle and like company, especially of intelligent people like yourself. Siblings and extended family members help in life. You get awards and recognition in your profession as you grow older.

Venus in the 11th house makes you successful on every plane. Material luxury or spiritual conquest as you choose. Your very presence is a ‘luxury’, you are a sought-after friend. You have an eclectic social circle, ready to promote you. Highly creative. You will gain through women, worship of the Devi and through the Sat-Guru. If your horoscope is materially oriented then you are a very glamorous personality surrounded by luxury and powerful friends. If your horoscope is spiritually oriented you will get that one Single Jivan-mukt Sat-guru as your spiritual guide. All this will happen more as you grow older as the results improve with age.

Jupiter in the 11th is a dream come true. You are wise, kind, like to learn/ teach, like talking on spiritual/ religious/ philosophical topics. Family, friends, spouse are good. You will have more sons, they too will be philosophically inclined. You work sincerely in any field you choose, you want to justify your salary! Your personal drive is to be perfect in your path. You can compromise with other comforts for this drive for perfection. Respected by society, dignified, independent mindset, priestly or kingly in demeanour. It is a comfortable life which improves with age.

This was a brief post on how planets work in the 11th house. To get the full picture examine the following.

  • These planets placed in the 11th and their power to give favourable/ pleasing results. Also see which houses they own. (eg if the owner of the 4th house is in the 11th house, you will gain from the things represented by the 4th house, the mother, homeland, professions linked to the home country/culture will appeal, your friends will be from similar culture etc.)
  • Aspects on the 11th house.
  • Position and power of the 11th lord and his ability to give you gains. In which house/ sign does he sit in?
  • if the 11th house is vacant then refer to this post on evaluating empty houses

Eg – Cancer ascendant, here Venus is the lord of the 11th house-Taurus sign. If Venus is placed in the 9th house-Pisces sign, he will be exalted. He is placed eleventh from his own sign, 9th is the bhavat bhavam for the 11th house! This is the most auspicious placement and possible only for Cancer ascendant. If you have this combination, it is very unique horoscope very highly oriented towards the spiritual, the rarest opportunity, if the rest of the horoscope supports.)

So evaluate your 11th house to know the source of your gains and the type of gains which give comfort to you on the material and the spiritual planes. This will help you understand your motivations better and you will be more satisfied in life.

Leo ascendant Integration

I have always considered Cancer ascendant to be the most challenging of the lot, written about it here. This post is a study on Leo ascendant, a bit less challenging than Cancer, but it too has its moments.

If your ascendant is either Cancer or Leo do read both these posts. These two ascendants are somewhat similar. Leo never changes his behaviour. Cancer ascendant too cannot change. They cannot adjust themselves as they are most directly connected to the individual soul (existence itself) and the power of creation (distribution of pran). They are ruled by the luminaries of the zodiac, the highest spiritualising agents, the Sun and the Moon.

Leo ascendant Integration

Leo is the natural 5th sign of the zodiac, a Kona/angle sign. Here your personal connection to the divine spark (Sahasrara chakra), your individual soul, your self-ego, confidence, self-creativity, genius, final knowledge (anand-mai-kosh), love affairs, children, etc are seen.

  • Sun is considered to be a friend by Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Ketu.
  • An enemy by Venus, Saturn and Rahu. So these 3 planets cannot be expected to give very good results outrightly, they need to be examined.
  • Jupiter and Moon own the 8th and 12th signs, but these are not their Mool-trikon signs which makes them not so bad, but they cannot be relied upon, do examine their roles.
  • But Sun considers, Moon, Mars, Jupiter as friends. And Saturn, Venus and Rahu as enemies. And Mercury and Ketu as neutrals. (So evaluate Mercury and Ketu too carefully.)

So there is sheer power vibrating about him, he exudes royal vitality and energy. The essence of the personality is ultra radiant, he has a lot of energy at his disposal and his environment is also enabling. Body is well built, he looks and feels huge. Health is generally good, but there is a propensity for heat related disease, pitta unbalances, blood diseases, fevers, piles, etc. Analytical process, communication skills, ability to think logically, mental stability is high, observant, alert. Can be egoistic, selfish, self-centred, has secrets, likes company, spends time with his friend circle. Does not like getting linked to one person much. Affairs and long term girlfriends/ boyfriends are less, as is not emotional by nature. Moon rules Cancer the 12th house so passion, emotion and mentality will not come on the surface nor interfere overtly with his decisions. Even after marriage, will not be seen much with the spouse, he will maintain his own separate circle. As a parent he can get possessive (if damaged Sun then this can get very unhealthy), generally takes pride in his child’s accomplishments. He aspires to higher things, will maintain useful contacts, connect with people who are higher placed than him. Likes using luxury items, generally materialistic by nature, sometimes interested in spiritual stuff and likes a comfortable life. His attitude, perceptions and outlook are stable, individualistic but regal, capable of appreciating the higher things. He may be materially well-off but wants more, information, knowledge, intelligence. He is not a gossip but will have information on others.

Leo is a fiery sign, very intense. Whatever he takes up he does so with full focus and commitment. He is completely involved in whatever has his attention at the moment, he will ignore the other aspects of life. And finally he is unpredictable, (a Leo guy once told me, ‘even I don’t know what I will be doing next!’), he can abandon his interest as suddenly as he took it up. He can be a loyal ally but can abruptly abandon his friends mid-stream and not look back. This behaviour can be viewed as ingratitude by others but is inherent, natural to him. His convenience is paramount to him. He has an unyielding nature, brusque, abrupt, not deeply involved in others including his own family. Highly self-involved. All one-one relationships are a source of dissatisfaction to him. They do not match his personality. He does not have the endurance or interest in maintaining any sort of one-one relationships for long. Spiritual practices cannot be sustained for long, he loses interest. Karmic bindings chafe. Saturn is the worst malefic for Leo ascendant. He is the owner of the 6th and 7th houses. So the demands for service/suffering increase after marriage/ partnerships. The desires for experience, Rahu, which pull him are antithetical to his basic nature, give him discomfort and he does not get deep satisfaction from anything he does.

If Leo is occupied, then this planet will exert its influence on the personality. Sun here is an excellent position, guaranteed victory everywhere. Moon here is not so good, there is deep internal loneliness, may waste energy as projects fail. Mercury alone here is not so good, body is weak, mental processes can get extreme, immaturity exists. Venus here will give him material gain from females, but can also make him selfish. Mars is very good here, can give all power and position if he can control his aggression. Jupiter here is mixed, can grant health and knowledge but also sudden disruptive changes. Saturn here is not good, grants hardship and ill health. Rahu/ Ketu axis here can grant spiritual gifts on the material planes they cause suffering physical, mental both.

Similarly if there are planets conjoint/ aspecting the birth Sun they will also exert significant effect on the entire personality. Sun will combust planets and become a composite Sun+Planet energy. In this case analyse this other planet too in depth. If the Sun is in the 3rd 6th 8th or 12th the houses of turmoil be careful.

Leo ascendant Integration

Now the Bhavat bhavam concept. The 1st house is the bhavat bhavam for the 7th house and only for the 7th. The 1st is ‘partnership of partnership’. The potential attributes of the 7th will be given scope and actualised by the power of the 1st. eg If you want to make your marriage work, you have to give your own personal time, physical strength, mental energy, spiritual strength etc. And since the energy of a house is limited, if you use lots of your resource on your spouse, you will neglect your business commitments or spiritual practices or the other things linked to the 7th. This is a general concept applicable across ascendants. (Similarly if you want to secure your 4th and 10th houses, your 7th house has to contribute its energy.)

The 1st and 7th houses are the rising and setting degree, ‘dawn and dusk’? Half in the dark half in the light. The 1st, morning dawn, things are coming out in the light, more optimistic. The 7th house is evening dusk, twilight, things are being obscured. Here malefic influences will be more powerful than benefic influences.

So analyse the 1st/ 7th axis to know about the entire personality. The 7th is the shadow part of the 1st. Choose your life/ business partners, spiritual practices and one-one relationships with due diligence. They have a very direct effect on your own personal energy. Always remember that the goal of all life and living is to rebalance karma and attain self-realization. This is the over-riding permanent goal, self-illumination, Moksh. The other desires are the waves of the mind (mano-vritta-asur), which are dissonant from this main goal.

The 1st house (Dharma trikon) and the 7th are opposite each other, together yet diametrically opposite. There is a subtle conflict always, the 7th (Kaam trikon) has the power to distract the soul from his true goal. (Desire can upset Foundation) If you give your 1st house energy to the 7th house to function then naturally the energy of the 1st house will be consumed. If you get involved with other humans, spouse or business, you are sending your personal energy out to others. It is ‘wasted’. If you use this personal energy to power your own spiritual practice (again a topic controlled by the 7th), you are sending your 1st house energy into your higher self, it is not being wasted on others but used for your deepest growth.

  • If the horoscope is overall highly materialistic, the person has chosen to ‘enjoy’ sex, companionship, luxury etc in this life then it is natural to use the 1st house to power marriage/ business. You have chosen to break your spiritual journey in this life. You pay for these enjoyments with the essence of your own self. There is no disconnect, you have chosen this option at the time of your birth.
  • But if the horoscope is highly spiritual in its orientation, you have chosen the spiritual path at birth, then this ‘waste’ of energy will be highly uncomfortable, the soul will strongly rebel against this waste, this is a deviation from the right path, destruction of personal power and the resources hoarded through so many lives. ‘Trying it out’ on the material here will have its repercussion on the spiritual.

Malefics in the 7th house or a badly placed 7th house owner will grant material pain, it is guaranteed. Death of husband/wife, divorces, abandonment, being cheated by partner, emotionally absent spouse etc are the deepest sorrows. These turn the soul more intensely into the spiritual if the horoscope grants the strength to bear this anguish. If not, then the life becomes miserable, a torment. Some might commit suicide or take morally wrong paths or self destructive paths like alcohol/drugs to drown the pain. More karmic imbalances to navigate through. Malefic effects gain the easiest entry into the personality via the 7th house, the house of twilight, where things are going into the night, being obscured. So one has to be very alert in the matters of the 7th. (This is more intense for Cancer than Leo.)

The supreme possibility of self-realisation is active for Cancer and Leo ascendants, a very big advantage. Saturn the 7th lord is malefic, Venus the agent of desire is a malefic. Jupiter the benevolent benefic cannot be counted upon, Mercury shows his immature analytic processes. Rahu/Ketu are dowsy. But Yogkarak Mars supports, so personal courage, determination to conquer, pioneering spirit, to fight, power to control pran, wake the kundalini, attain Moksh etc all is possible. If the rest of the horoscope supports, that is. And if the person chooses to.

Now the weirdest. Sun is not good for Cancer ascendant he rules the 2nd house. And Moon is not good for Leo ascendant as he rules its 12th house. This has implications on the material/ emotional/ vitality parts. But becomes more crucial for the spiritual. Cancer ascendant has the resource but not the interest in self-realisation, would prefer wasting the resource in the material treasure gathering activities. Leo ascendant does want to bask in his own radiance, but his unknown resources are lying in the 12th house! These two ascendants suffer from very deep internal conflicts. If they can surrender to the fact that spiritual growth is the only possible goal and instead of ‘trying out the material and the subsequent anguish’, it would be overall better.

So Cancer and Leo ascendants, do some deep self-introspection on this. Try to know what is your purpose in this life. You have chosen the highest luminaries as your ascendant owners, why did you do this? Meditate on this and arrive at your own conclusions. Only you can help yourself, this post is just to get you thinking.

Leo ascendant Integration

And back to the Leo ascendant. His challenges are all the one-one relationships in the family/ friends, profession/ business, spiritual practice etc. The logic is this,

  1. The ascendant lord Sun covers one sign in every month, the ascendant return is once a year. Whenever the ascendant covers one complete movement around the zodiac the personality also completes one cycle and noticeably changes. Thus the rate of change (personality/environment) is rather high.
  2. Sun represents the self-ego, luminary, the King of the zodiac, presiding over the highest chakra, Sahasrara. He is different from the rest of the graha.

The 7th Aquarius is owned by Saturn. Saturn considers both Sun and Moon as his enemy. Slowest, he goes round the zodiac in 30yrs. So the partner does not change his basic personality for 30 long years and dislikes sudden changes. Coupled with point (1), this will give disagreement in partnerships of marriage or business.

Saturn is linked to the lowest Mooladhar chakra. He is earthy, bound by karma, hard-working, dour, resistant to change, servant class, very serious, the divine spark is dimmed to the lowest denominator here. This and point (2) ensures that ‘love’ in the marriage becomes irrelevant and only duty remains. He and the spouse, both are uncomfortable, often frustrated and alone. This affects the children if any. On the outer levels they may continue in a marriage of convenience or divorce.

Aquarius is the Mool trikon sign for Saturn and he is more comfortable here, ie the energies represented by Saturn are more easily expressed in Aquarius. And the Sun’s Mooltrikon is Leo itself. So there is discomfort, but not as traumatic as what is faced by the Cancer ascendant. (Mooltrikon is an important concept when interpreting planets and their own signs.)

Partnerships, the 7th house, Aquarius. Spouse likes social groups, mixes with them anonymously, Leo wants to be the center of attention, with yet apart. Spouse is hard working, dour, not ‘shining’, dull, methodical. Also alert about spending money, calculative, self-centred, individualistic (somewhat like Leo but with a Saturnine streak) this leads to clashes. Leo will then start keeping his secrets, hide crucial aspects of his life. He does not trust anyone in any case. He is not made for equal one-one partnerships. But Leo ascendent is generally not unfaithful, sex is not very attractive to him, so he won’t have affairs outside marriage. (Cancer ascendant on the other hand can be unfaithful). There is incompatibility between the two at all levels. Leo basically wants a ‘servant-spouse’ (Similar to Cancer, it is more intense for Cancer as emotions as well as personality/ environment are affected).

If you have Leo ascendants around you and their marriage seems to work, observe. Note these things, the spouse will take care of the house, the children, all domestic stuff everything, he/she will be over-worked, physically ill, often a chronic long term disease, emotionally suppressed, sexually dissatisfied. His/her dress sense will be like a servant, shabby, drab, personal grooming is not on a priority etc. Will not have many friends, no enjoyment in life. The Leo will not pay attention to the spouse, no movies, no dinner out, no intimacy. The spouse is does not openly resent the superior attitude that the Leo shows towards him/her. The minute he/she protests, the cracks in the marriage become evident. If the spouse stops being subservient, the marriage collapses. Both are unhappy and the children too suffer. (This spouse thingie is very true for Cancer ascendant’s spouses too and more intensely. The examples I have seen are unbelievable!, some in my own family)

Now the inter-linked karma. When you marry someone you take on the attributes of his/ her 7th house. Marriage means that you really take on more karma. If you observe people married to Leo ascendants, they become all this as above after the marriage. Saturn and Aquarius change both him and his spouse after marriage. I have seen young women who looked like film stars before marriage turning into the shabby servant-spouse after marriage with a Cancer or Leo ascendant. And of course the Leo (or Cancer’s) internal misery also increases with marriage, as it chafes on the internal levels.

Leo ascendant Integration

The 7th house covers business partnerships and spiritual practices too so these are also affected. The 7th is the bhavat bhavam for the 4th and 10th houses so this effect spills over on the family/ friends and profession/ social image matters too. (I have observed Leo ascendants, some in my own family. Families can be a great life-time study samples. Observing our relatives closely and their charts through the years.)

I am emphasising the 7th house when I am supposed to be analysing the ascendant sign. But you cannot separate the axis. What you do with the essence of yourself? How will free will operate? How will you choose? What will make you choose? There are some inbuilt factors in the chart but in the 7th house, your mind wants to decide, to choose, to create new karma! You want to use up the energy given to you. How do you use it? This is the most important question.

Eg. you may have 100% energy but you choose to use it on a doomed marriage. Then the wife dies and leaves you with a small differently-abled child. Your free will, your choice and your own repercussions. You have not only used up the hoarded precious resource, but also created new karma. If Parabrahma now appears before you and tells you that you were going to be a Guru in this life, but you have lost the opportunity, now you will need more lives, as many as the leaves on this tree! How do you react?

And equally important is what will feed you energy? Which of your free will choices are going to boost you? This is again the domain of the 7th. The most important boost is spiritual practice, thus the 7th house governs spiritual practice and your relationship with your higher self. If you are aware that your chart is spiritually oriented and you choose to immerse yourself in Dhyan, you are feeding yourself more power.

For Cancer and Leo ascendants especially, these philosophical questions are important. For the other ascendants, all this might sound crazy. (But when you study charts, you learn to appreciate different mindsets and each very typical.)

If Aquarius is occupied, then the person will generally get married with its typical issues. Sun here makes the Leo very dominating, ill-health/ death of spouse is possible. Moon here makes the Leo unfaithful in marriage. Mercury is better here, the spouse may suffer ill-health but is adaptable and efficiently manages the household. Venus gives very bad results here, as both are manipulative towards each other. Mars can give both extremes, a good marriage or divorce. Jupiter if here gives ill-health to the spouse, this spouse otherwise is generally good. Saturn is not good here, after marriage there is depression, disillusionment and sorrow.

On the marriage front, I have seen that several Leo ascendants do not marry, they are happy in their own royal solitude. If Aquarius is vacant, then there is a real possibility that marriage will not occur. A distant marriage. Or a marriage of convenience, both doing their own thing, not unfaithful per se. Divorce or death of spouse is also possible if there are other combinations. Leo ascendants do not enjoy a happy married life as internally there is no affection no mutual respect no compatibility nor companionship nor empathy nor shared interests between the two.

On the business/ profession front, I have seen he generally does better in service, possibly government service or politics. If he starts his own business, he should choose a partner whom he can dominate in some way with the power of his charisma, his knowledge of secrets etc.

On the spiritual front, he is always lonely and hides his loneliness well. The Royal is always alone. Very private, he will not show his emotions to others, alone in his private joy and grief. The route to the one-one relationship with the Higher Self is invisible in the radiant glare of the Individual Self. If he wants real happiness, he will have to stop his pre-occupation with his individuality. Only then will the route be visible. Sun looks outwards from himself, not really within himself. There is a saying ‘darkness beneath the lamp’ which completely applies here.

Leo ascendant Integration

At present, Saturn has returned to his own Capricorn after 30yrs, will next move to his Aquarius. These total 5 years are going to be very crucial for Cancer and Leo ascendants. If the person is more than 36yrs of age then this will not be so difficult as maturity has set in. But if the Saturn is still immature, should be careful. Whatever path he commits to now, cannot be revisited in future as it will be powered by the irreversible Saturn+Capricorn power. This will have deep implications for his remaining and next lives.

  • For Cancer, the lord of the 7th and 8th, now himself in the 7th house (later will shift to the 8th house). Unfavourable for one-one partnerships of every type. Deep catastrophic changes in the personality/ environment as the very psyche will change. Body, mind and soul all will be affected. This time period has to be navigated with care. Choose your actions, you might end up creating more karma and internal sorrow for yourself. Sudden decisions or life-time decisions will not give favourable results.
  • For Leo, the 6th and 7th lord, himself in the 6th house (later in the 7th house). It will have a favourable effect on his karmic requirements of service/suffering. But as the lord of the 7th in the 6th house will mean that the one-one partnerships which he will choose will have karmic repercussions. He can create new karma or choose to dissolve the root of karma itself.

Cancer ascendant is deeply disinterested in the game of Creation. Leo ascendent internally knows that he will Integrate his flame into the infinite fires of Reality. So will this happen in this life or not? This is your own choice and free will.

(Only Cancer and Leo ascendants have these deep spiritual implications. For the other ascendants, my posts will not be so philosophical nor lengthy.)

Cancer ascendant, the depth of disinterest

I got this comment, ‘What is your advice on removing any fatalistic view on certain placements? There is such a massive emphasis on countless articles of the malefic effects for a Pisces ascendant that it is overwhelming! How would you suggest interpreting this info?’

I do not consider any ascendant to be evil or bad or good or anything. Each of the 12 ascendants have their particular attributes. Some of these attributes favour the material or the intellectual/ mental or emotional or the spiritual facets of life. Ultimately they are all beneficial. So I will try to write a few posts on the ascendant signs, the typical challenges that they face and their unique plus points from my perspective.

These posts will be in the nature of a study.

Cancer ascendant, the depth of disinterest

I have always considered Cancer ascendant to be the most challenging of the lot. But gives the biggest prize if you dare reach for it.

It is ruled by Moon, a luminary, linked to Ajnya chakra, his primary work is to take you within yourself ie spiritual. Cancer is the natural 4th sign of the zodiac and linked to the principle which sustains and binds you to this life.

  • Moon is considered to be a friend by Sun, Mars, Jupiter.
  • Neutral by Ketu.
  • Moon is considered to be an enemy by Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Rahu. In addition its 6th house Sagittarius is owned by Jupiter and this is his Mooltrikon sign. So these 5 planets cannot be expected to give very good results outrightly, they need to be examined. Whatever is represented by these planets generally may be uncomfortable in life. Mercury particularly dislikes his father, Moon so Mercury-linked things may be distorted. Venues dislikes Moon’s brand of ‘needy love’ so all one-one relationships can be affected. Saturn the slowest graha is in charge of one-one partnerships and catastrophic traumatic changes both together. Rahu can sometimes drive the Moon crazy with his endless desires. And Jupiter will smile benevolently and expand the karmic service requirements.

So broadly the personality will be something like this.

Cancer ascendant is generally a mix of contradictory attributes, extremes are the norm. Analytical process, communication skills, ability to think logically, mental stability can get emotional. Streaks of rebellion or immaturity are possible. The vitality and energy of Cancer sign will decide the entire physical functioning. A watery sign, shy, gentle, unable to express his innermost feelings completely. The constitution is delicate, prone to bloating or salt imbalance type of diseases. Moon himself rules Cancer, so passion, emotion and mentality will also be significantly controlled by the 1st house itself. His attitude, perceptions and outlook will always change depending on what is influencing him at that time. So analyse the aspects/ dasha/ transits minutely and their influence especially on the ascendant sign and its lord/ Moon. He will be encouraging, sympathetic, over sensitive, emotional, sometimes high strung. Likes luxury items, interested in spiritual stuff and likes a comfortable life. There will be unexpected changes in his personality and environment, cyclic rhythms can be observed in life. He has a variable nature ranging from mild to furious. He does not get deep satisfaction from anything. Extremes are possible so may live a grossly materialistic life or attain even Moksh. Maintaining any sort of one-one relationships for long can get difficult as he likes change. If afflicted, he can get into a series of affairs as marriage may get unhappy. He needs love, but it is not ‘equal love’ it is ‘needy love’. He requires support and security.

His over riding quality is a deep internal ‘disinterest’ on all levels, material, emotional and spiritual.

If I get a horoscope, I try to find out if the person is materially inclined or spiritually. Thus I can speak what he understands best. With Cancer ascendant, he is at extremes. If the chart is spiritually inclined he can deny it completely and sincerely talk on the material and the other way around. If his material life is going well, he will long for the spiritual. And if the spiritual is going well, he will long for the material. He longs for the things which he cannot have at that point of time and thus is internally dissatisfied.

If Cancer is occupied by some planet then it will exert an inordinate amount of influence on the personality. Sun makes him passionate, dominating, but has to take efforts in one-one relationships. Moon here is better overall and he can help in marriage but health needs to be taken care of. Mercury gives a biting wit and intelligence but gives medical problems so be careful in typical dashas. Venus gives an attractive personality but can cause many physical affairs. Mars makes him an active leader, very intense personality, body is overheated always, also he can be impulsive. Jupiter can give good results here if the rest of the horoscope is supportive. Saturn here is not good in early life, later he may turn to spirituality and become great or remain materialistic and miserable. Rahu/ Ketu axis here can grant spiritual gifts.

Similarly if there are planets conjoint/aspecting the birth Moon they will also expert significant effect on the entire personality. If the Moon is in the 3rd 6th 8th or 12th the houses of turmoil especially, do analyse him in depth. If well aspected and powerful then the personality can use the challenges in life as opportunities.

Cancer ascendant, the depth of disinterest

Now let’s go deeper into his watery depths.

We have learnt about the Bhavat bhavam concept earlier. The 1st house is the bhavat bhavam for the 7th house and only for the 7th. Here the 1st house is ‘partnership of partnership’. The potential attributes of the 7th house will be given scope and actualised by the power of the 1st house. To ‘activate’ the 7th, the 1st has to give its energy. ie the 7th house is the potential related to marriage, business, partnerships, practices which take you to your own reality etc, but to make full use of this, the 1st has to divert its energies into the 7th.

Eg if you want to make the best of your marriage you have to give your own personal time, physical strength, mental energy, spiritual strength etc else the marriage will not realise its full potential. And since the energy of a house is limited, if you focus too much resource on your spouse, you might see yourself neglecting your business commitments or your spiritual practices or the other things linked to your 7th house. This is a general concept applicable across ascendants. (Similarly if you want to secure your 4th and 10th houses, your 7th house has to contribute its energy.)

The 1st and 7th houses are different from the rest, the rising and setting degree, ‘dawn and dusk’? The 1st is the morning dawn, things are coming out in the light. Things are more optimistic and if you have equal malefic v/s benefic influences on this, the benefic ones will give more results. The 7th house is the house of evening dusk, twilight, things are being obscured. Here the malefic influences are more powerful than benefic influences.

So always analyse this 1st/ 7th axis in depth to know about the entire personality. The 7th is the shadow part of the 1st. And choose your life/ business partners, spiritual practices and one-one relationships with the due diligence. They have a very direct effect on your personal energy.

Cancer ascendant, the depth of disinterest

And back to the Cancer ascendant with this 1/7 axis concept.

He has a difficult 7th house. His biggest trauma comes from one-one relationships. This spills over all the one-one relationships in the family/ friends, profession/ business, spiritual practice etc also, and can poison his life subtly. (Leo ascendants also have a similar possibility.) The basic premise remains the same,

(1) The ascendant lord moves rather rapidly. Moon covers one sign in 2.25days so the ‘ascendant return’ is around every 28 days. Sun covers one sign in every month, the ascendant return is once a year. Whenever the ascendant covers one complete movement around the zodiac the personality also completes one cycle and noticeably changes. Thus the rate of change (personality/environment) for these two ascendant signs is rather high, Cancer is the highest.

(2) These two are the luminaries, the Kings of the zodiac. They preside over the highest chakras, Ajnya-Moon and Sahasrara-Sun. Sun represents the self-ego and the Moon represents the summary of all your present, past, future, parallel selves. They both are different from the rest of the graha. (The lower 5 chakras are the 5 non-luminaries. The forces which push the perfection of the energy structure out of order are the two astral Rahu/ Ketu).

The 7th house for these two ascendants is either Capricorn or Aquarius, both owned by Saturn. Saturn considers both Sun and Moon as his enemy. The slowest Saturn completes his round of the zodiac in 30yrs. So the preferred partner does not change his basic personality for 30 long years and also dislikes sudden changes. Coupled with point (1), this factor alone is reason sufficient for disagreement in partnerships of marriage or business. Saturn is linked to the lowest Mooladhar chakra. He is earthy, bound by karma, hard-working, dour, resistant to change, servant class, very serious, the divine light is dimmed to the lowest denominator here. This with reference to point (2) above can ensure that ‘love’ or agreement in the marriage partnership soon becomes irrelevant and only duty remains. The person and the spouse, both are uncomfortable on the internal levels, often frustrated and alone. This affects the children if any. On the outer levels they may continue in a marriage of convenience or divorce. True companionship is denied.

Both Capricorn and Aquarius are owned by Saturn but there is a subtle difference between the two. Aquarius is the Mool trikon sign for Saturn and he is more comfortable here, ie the energies represented by Saturn are more easily expressed in Aquarius. Moon’s mooltrikon is in Taurus not Cancer. And the Sun’s Mooltrikon is Leo itself. Mooltrikon is an important concept when interpreting planets placed in own signs.

This basic premise will be modified by influences of other planets, their strengths and avastha-s. One placement does not make a reading and one has to see the entire horoscope holistically to come to a conclusion.

Cancer ascendant, the depth of disinterest

Back to our analysis, now partnerships. The 7th house, Capricorn.

Spouse prefers personal privacy, is highly secretive, he will never let on how he feels or what he is doing. Harsh, serious, attracted to material stuff, rigid, careful about money/ assets, hard working, conscious of social structure, somewhat strict. He is unemotional, also indifferent to other’s emotions etc. (For a Cancer ascendant guy, such a spouse can cause stress). Then this spouse will not be much interested in religious or spiritual stuff. There may be arguments on this specific topic. (This factor is very important. When I see charts for marriage, if the material is a bit dim but the emotional/ spiritual is supportive then the marriage will have its problems but mutual sympathy for each other’s emotions and faith in a common divinity can help the marriage survive.)

Now the weird part, inter-linked karma. When you marry someone you take on the characterises of his/ her 7th house. Marriage means that you really take on additional karma. If you observe people married to Cancer ascendants, they become all this as above, more so after the marriage. So if our Cancerian guy marries someone with the expectation that the tiny niggling doubts will ease out after marriage, it may not really happen like this. Tiny can suddenly flare up as Saturn and Capricorn change him and his spouse both after marriage. (I have seen a lot of Cancer ascendants. eg in my own family, have been observing my two maternal uncles, their wives+children in depth all my life.)

Though Saturn is its ruler, Capricorn can easily bend rules, ethics and morals if it thinks that this in its best interest. Capricorn is very clear on its personal level what it wants and has the determination to get it. Highly individualistic. All one-one relationships of the Cancer ascendant have this energy at the core.

(Families can be a great life-time study sample. Observing them, we learn a lot about ourselves. Eg I have 3 people with my similar ascendant+Moon sign under observation. When I got married, my Dad pulled out couples from his client database who have the same ascendant+moon sign as me and my husband as reference samples. Transits give similar results.)

Cancer ascendant, the depth of disinterest

Deeper into our Cancer ascendant guy.

The 1st house is Cancer so this sign allows his Capricorn spouse full expression in his own personality. Pure Capricorn is not a friendly sign for one-one relationships and it is the mirror for the Cancer ascendant. And Cancer allows other impressions to register on itself. Overall this can get complicated as Cancer mixed with Capricorn is uncomfortable. So he might take emotionally charged decisions connected to the 7th house keywords. eg leave a stable job and start an ill-considered business with an unsuitable business partner. Or take up some weird spiritual practice. If you are a Cancer ascendant remember that you should never take decisions in the heat of the moment. Take time, evaluate things, ask for opinions, be patient and then decide.

If Capricorn is occupied by some planet then the personality becomes extra susceptible to the influence of the spouse. So keep this in mind. But if Capricorn is vacant, then there is a real possibility that marriage with another person will not occur and the person will prefer to find the deepest relationship within himself.

On the marriage front, I have seen that some Cancer ascendants do not get married nor into serious relationships. They do some regular spiritual practice. Second possibility is that they have a distant marriage where the job involves travel or something so that they never get to really be at home. Third situation is that they get divorced or widowed or get into flings or illegally keep more wives than allowed by law. There have been several exclusive studies and actual books on Cancer ascendant.

On the business/ profession front, I have seen that these people generally do better in service, working in a company etc. If they start their own business, the possibility is that at least one business partner will cheat them. If they restart with another partner, the same pattern can repeat. Best for businessmen would be to go solo, ie not have a formal partner.

The take away point for Cancer ascendant is that he should be willing and able to endure, be patient, stick to schedules and projects. And second keep realistic expectations from the material and emotional fronts. And the third, to involve himself in spiritual practice on a regular basis. Try doing Dhyan using the Mantra Soham, it will take 30 mins daily or any spiritual practice which appeals to your nature. This will help you gain internal stability.

And all this is a reflection of Cancer’s deepest tendency, ‘disinterest’.

Cancer ascendant, the depth of disinterest

After all this, finally the wonderful plus point for the last.

This most challenging ascendent sign can grant the biggest prize, Self-realization.

If you analyse the horoscopes of enlightened Guru-s, the sages who attained Mukti, most of them are Cancer ascendants. There are books which have these horoscope collections and analysis, do study them, they are fascinating. He can be extraordinary on the spiritual. He is capable of secluding himself, withdrawing from the society, doing spiritual practices, deep mediations. Despite physically being with all he can still pursue the internal Light. He is inherently dissatisfied with everything, so he among all the other ascendants, can most easily focus in the pursuit of this most highest Eternal.

And the best part is that spiritual conquest also does not appeal to him, so there are less chances of him failing. He is not fascinated by occult powers, Siddhi and thus naturally avoids the pitfalls. He pursues the Ultimate in the same ‘it is of no consequence’ mindset, disinterest here too. If he has grace/ Guru-krupa on his side, he meets someone who constantly emphasises that he should continue doing his practice. He sort of drifts into Moksh.

My own Sat-guru, Shri Muppin Kadsiddheshwar (12:40 pm 23rd April 1905, Sangli, Maharashtra) attained Moksh in April 1934 at the age of 29yrs. Thus this theme of ‘disinterest’ then finds its real purpose.
