Why Hindus worship fierce gods Ugradevata

Last Updated on September 15, 2025 by Tejaswini

Why do some of us worship Ugra devata, ferocious deities instead of the gentler Saumya deities?

Sanatan Dharma is highly logical, Astik Darshan Shastra, it points you towards your own Reality. And there are no superstitions here, everything we do has a clear and specific reason. Hinduism is designed in a way that it expands your intelligence and simultaneously makes is subtler. And it is in two steps, Vedpurva and Vedant.

Vedpurva is the junior school of Sanatan Dharma. In this phase you are required to balance your Annamaykosh – physical body, Pranmaykosh – pranic body of naadis and pran movement and the Manomaykosh – the emotional mind. This might take one life or several lives but you have to be here till you gain control over these three layers of your body. Vedpurva does this through Moorti puja and karmakaand and later upasanakaand. This is compulsory. And Hinduism offers a beautiful pantheon of deities which you can worship as per your choice.

  • There is Devi Laxmi of the Satva gun wearing a lovely sari, gold jewellery seated on a lotus, smiling, showering the universe with gold.
  • Then Devi Parvati of the Tamo gun seated on her husband’s left thigh and holding her two children, Shri Ganpati and Shri Skandha in her own lap, her serene face glowing, the divine family together in one image.
  • And Devi Sarasvati of the Rajogun, seated on her beautiful white swan, playing the Veena, holding her Mala and the four Ved in her hands, absorbed in the divine music she herself is creating.
  • Their husbands, Bhagwan Brahma serene in meditation seated on a lotus.
  • Bhagwan Vishnu in yognidra resting on the Shesha Naag, in the Ksheersamudra.
  • Bhagwan Shankar deep in samadhi on the Mount Kailas.
  • The Para Devi Lalita, the Mahatripursundari, Devi Kaamaskshi herself, resplendent in the most beautiful throne room of the universe.
  • And then there are the parents of this universe, the Mahakameshwar and the Mahakameshwari.

These beautiful forms are the saumya forms of the deities. The deities are shown to be smiling, serene, eager to be pleased, willing to give blessings and very approachable. Their pujas are simpler and even if you do some mistakes these Saumya forms are willing to forgive. If you are just starting on the route shown by Sanatan Dharma then it is advisable to worship a saumya form. 99% of us worship these gentle forms.

And then there are the 1% followers of Sanatan Dharma who worship Ugra forms. like Bhagwan Kaalbhairav or Devi Chamunda, Devi Dhoomavati, Devi Bagalamukhi, Devi Tara, Devi Chinnamasta or the Primal Devi of Creation, the highest form of pure consciousness Devi Kali.

Worshipping these Ugra forms requires immense mental discipline. Take this up only if you have complete control over your emotions. These forms are very strict. It is like walking on the razors edge, one tiny slip can have disastrous consequences which can even go on for several lives. But if you are prepared, then it is only these Ugra forms which give you what you really want. The most precious secret of Sanatan Dharma, the secret of Moksh, immortality, freedom, knowledge.

Devi Mahakali is the same Devi Parvati/Laxmi/Saraswati/Lalita but now in Ugra form, as she destroys the concept of Kaal itself in the highest Mahashmashan. Here she shows you that there is no time, no space, Just the Self. And you are that Self. Devi Kali in her relatively gentle Dakshinkali form is terrifying to most people. And in her fierce Shmashankali form, just reading her descriptions will give regular people nightmares. She is the highest energy possible in this universe but for 99% of us, her power is too much to comprehend. The entire concept is so mindbending that 99% people do not dare stand in front of her. So you will find that most people are generally satisfied worshipping her relatively gentle form – Devi Lalita etc.

We worship Ugra devatas because facing and then acknowledging Reality requires tremendous amount of courage. Saumya forms give emotional strength and Ugra forms help develop intellectual strength. To know, understand and accept the core principle of Existence, Astitva requires tremendous courage. Which can come only with the worship of Ugra forms of the devatas.

Our deities are depicted with ‘lakshan’ ie the descriptions are indicative of a concept. Eg Black skin means that she is beyond the illusion of creation, she has no attributes, she is pure Existence, astitva. She has consumed Kaal/Time itself and is the unchanging Self. This is the foundational truth of Sanatan Dharma which is depicted through the moorti for easier understanding.

But the fact remains that the fundamental ‘god’ Intelligence of this Universe is in the ‘Ugra’ form. So let’s take another example of the Ugra form from a more familiar text, the Bhagawat Gita.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

Today everyone accepts the truth of this Bhagwat Gita. It is from the Itihas Mahabharat, composed by Maharishi Vedvyas. Some consider it as a ‘song of the God’, some think it to be the ‘best management practice’ some consider it as a ‘yogshastra’. But primarily it is a distillation of the Vedant presented in a way that the even householders/ Gruhastashrami people can understand. And it also hides within it the deepest secrets of Shri Vidya.

Open chapter 11, here the ‘god’ of the Bhagwat Gita has been described in depth..

Here Shri Krishna shows Arjun the Vishvaroop. The moorti of the Parameshwar with infinite heads, infinite faces. It has infinite mouths all which are open and emitting fire. It has infinite arms moving in different directions. There are infinite legs all moving in different motion. It has infinite bodies of all possible looks, colors, shapes. It holds infinite types of weapons and all are ready to strike. It wears infinite clothing in every possible variation. It is adorned by infinite jewellery, infinite fragrances. This Vishwaroop is stupendous, radiating with fire of infinite suns, indescribable.

Here Shri Krishna shows Arjun how everything of this created worlds, even the the deities, the sages, humans, animals, the entire creation is itself continuously being swallowed by the infinite mouths of the Vishwaroop. His infinite teeth crushing all creation to nothingness. And Arjun’s mind then started crumbling face to face with this – Naked Reality. This is the ‘god’ of the Bhagwat Gita, it is pure Astitva. The Kathor Satya. The Essential Tama.

Arjun was a Maharathi, perhaps the greatest warrior of his times. He was great in every way! A Kshatriya, he knew how to use weapons, he had fought wars, bravely faced his enemies, humans and demons. He had done rigorous pujas, intense tapah, he had pleased the devatas, he knew secret tantra – mantras and yantras. He had learnt several lethal mantra weapons – Astra. He had won against armies stronger than him. He had seen unimaginable riches and also unimaginable insults in his life. Yet, despite all this life experience, he was unable to face the brilliance of the Vishwaroop. He thought that his mind would go insane, he requested Shri Krishna to stop.

Shri Krishna was a Atmajnyani Mahapurush, a Guru. He gave Arjun the ‘eye’ with which the Vishwaroop could be seen. Even today when a real Atmajnyani Guru gives his student the diksha for Moksh, he/she shows the student this glimpse of the Self. And it is this glimpse which then relentlessly drives the student to strive, to make this his own permanent reality.

The lakshan of  this Vishwaroop is not different from the lakshan of Devi Mahakali. Krushna is not different from Kali – this is the ‘blackness’ without attributes. This is the Tama of the Naasadiya Sukta.

The ‘god’ of the Bhagwat Gita is the Primal Intelligence, and essentially in the Ugra form. But to understand what is being shown by these Ugra forms requires that you follow the step wise syllabus of sanatan dharma. To prepare your mind to accept the mind bending reality of your own Self.

So first do karmakaand, follow Ved Purva. Strengthen your physical body and your pranic body – do your Yogasan, eg Suryanamaskar, do Pranayam. Strengthen your emotional mind your maanas. Worship the Saumya deities and then understand what the Ugra deities are showing you. Understand the vedant, the Jnyan kaand from a Atmajnyani Mahapurush. Use your intellectual mind, your vijnyanmaykosh, your buddhi to inquire into your own Self. Once you are sure about who you really are, do the ‘practicals’ given in the Upanishads. These ‘practicals’ are rewritten in a comparatively simpler language in the Tantra books under the Shri Vidya umbrella. Rooted in theory, master the practicals. And see for yourself where all this takes you.

Hinduism is not a religion nor a doctrine nor a philosophy nor an idea. There is no ‘supernatural creator god’. You create your own universe in your mind.

Walking this Sanatan dharma path to the Self requires tremendous courage. There is no concept of retribution, no guilt, no compulsion, no punishments in Sanatan Dharma. The law of Karma operates and you yourself, your own conscience, Antar-atma is in charge. As you act with intention you simultaneously create its result, which you yourself have to enjoy/ endure. Whatever happens to you, it is because of you, no one else. You cannot blame anyone, you have to take responsibility for yourself. Sanatan Dharma does not allow you to blame others, and this makes it the most difficult path to follow. And it also gives the greatest final prize – the Self.

So if you feel inclined, start on this path. it may take one life or a million but once you step on it, the result is assured. And the prize is well worth the effort!

Namaste mam, can you please put more words, thoughts on the words ‘moksha and immortality’, that you indicated on secret of Sanatan dharma? Both are opposite words, to my limited knowledge. Do they coexist?

      Hi there
They both mean the same thing.

    Namaste Mam,

This post coincided on this day as I completed reading the Katha Upanishad book. After reading the book, a significant part of the text went above the head and felt how important it is to learn from someone.

Is it safe to say that we need to worship only saumya deities until we find a teacher, guide or a Guru who instructs us and helps us turn towards ugra deities? Or will we experience any other signs to make us aware?

    Thanks,
    Avinash

      Hi there
they are called Upanishad. You have to sit near a Guru to know what is being said.
but you can definitely read the sanskrit shloks while you wait for your Guru to appear.
and the Guru appears only when the Shishya is ready.
till then burn, do your Tapasya

Whenever I think of Devi Kali’s image, I feel like she is laughing at us, at how we are all trapped in this whirl of Maya, and I start laughing at myself too. I don’t mean to sound disrespectful, but to me, her Ugra form is a good reminder of my ignorance and seeming bondage.

On that note, ever since I came upon your blog on Teekshna Damstra Kalabhairava Ashtakam, I have loved listening to it on a loop when I am tired and weary. Thank you.

May I ask kinda related question? Some time ago something led me to think I should chant Her mantra too, chart is also confirming it(“weak” Moon in 6, in Scorpio in both D1&D9, Rahu in 9th), so I immediately looked up information in Vishnu Devananda’s book on mantras(Meditation and Mantras) and it said that Kali mantra is OM Sri Mahakalikayai Namah, it had tremendous effect(even single utterance) but eventually I stopped. Book warned that very few are initiated into it due to its power. However, I’ve never seen this mantra in any book afterwards, everyone suggests other mantras. Moreover I did not notice obvious discord(Kali and MahaKali) and the more I think about the more understand that the mantra is waaay “out of my league”, for not initiated in any tradition person for sure. On top of that I think I might accidentally offend Her otherwise. My question is 1) how to properly ask for forgiveness, what should I do 2) should I chant Her mantras as a non-initiate and which one if I’m allowed to.

    Thank You!

      Hi there
adding ‘Maha’ does not change the energy.
in fact her most ‘final’ name is “Shri Maha-bhairava-canda-ugra-ghora-kali”

      you can never ‘offend’ her.
She is the Eternal Kali, all these concepts of offence, praise, all this is a human mindset. does not apply to Her.

we know that the ‘god’ is right inside of us. when we use mantra we are just trying to increase the resonance.
intellectually i know that i am the Eternal, but then the emotional mind gets excessively involved in husband, son, parents, office etc… and forgets this essential fact.
so we do the mantra to remind ourselves of our own Reality.
we do our mantras more and more, resonate more and more.

then there will come a time, where you will get siddhis of various sorts. enjoy these too, but do not get caught in them.. then there is more..

point being – do the mantra you want to. just be sure that it is a proper mantra.
if you do not have a Guru to initiate you then there is a way where you ask the deity to be your Guru.

talk to Her, just like you would normally speak to a friend. Tell her that you want to do this mantra and request her to give you a sign. Then light a lamp with this intention that you want Her to give you some sign.
Keep a track of the events in your life in the next 3 days. Random things, dreams etc. if you get a signal then go ahead. Tell her that She is your Guru and you have taken the Diksha from Her directly. Be very sincere about it. Tell her to be kind to you. then you can recite the mantra in your mind..

Thank You! It’s very inspiring and unique knowledge, as always! If I’m not mistaken I’ve heard about “offensive behavior” from some tantriks(dharma nathas I think) who said that some deities are hard to please and on top of that might not be approached for the 2nd time if you messed up it first time. Some, apparently, might even “attack” you if you use gained powers improperly, hence I was afraid

        Hi there
there is a lot of confusion regarding the Nath Sampraday.
I am from Maharashtra and i think 95% Marathi people are followers of the Nath sampraday.
all our Marathi Gurus are from this sampraday. including Shri Jnyneshwar maharaj and his brothers, Shri Eknath maharaj, Shri Tukaram maharaj, Shri Ramdas maharaj, and in my sampraday we are followers of Shri Revannath maharaj. There are the Navnath temples in Maharashtra. even the birth place of Shri Dattaguru is in Maharashtra.

tantra is an essential component of Sanatan dharma.
it was about 1000yrs ago that tantra stopped being acceptable to the general public.
there are several reasons, not going into that now..
but real theory and practice both vanished from the general public. but the Gurus were always there, waiting for the right disciples to come to them.
but the majority followers of Sanatan dharma are in a sorry shape because of the prevalent ’emotion dominant sects’ . no one wants to go beyond the dvaita. and you cannot even touch tantra or the nath sampraday unless you are 100% clear on the theory.
if you can say with full confidence ‘Soham’ ‘I am That’ or ‘Aham = Aham’. if you can read Vibhuti yog from BG and say that these are all My own Vibhutis. or you read the Vishvaroop darshan from BG and say that this is my own vishwaroop… that is when the real practice starts.
now you are sure that the universe is your own body, so now you learn how to use this body..

one advice is to stick to the standard vedic deities or the standard list of the Dasha Mahavidyas. do not invoke lesser known deities, or experiment with unknown ‘mantras’ do unknown ‘prayog’.

if you are a beginner, then the safest method is Shri Sukta, recite it thousands of times, till you are saturated with it.
then it will open up its beejs inside your body. it has 15 beejs in it.
once you are ready, your real Guru will appear.
depending on your Guru you will either get Shrikula or Kalikula, but the end point is always and always Devi Kali..
even advanced students who cannot bear Her as Kali, worship her as Devi Lalita. but ultimately everyone has to go to only Devi Kali. finally it is only Devi Kali.

I can’t believe the treasure trove that is Spanda Karika, introduced via your comments section. Learnt about the 12 forms and the final form of Kali you have mentioned here.

It’s even more intriguing that the author has actually imagined something akin to a cinema (moving reflections on a mirror or a screen ) to describe Maya, and that too over 2k years back ! And the whole logic based arguments, trying to assume the false propositions and logically conclude their fallacy. The text is an amazing read for a scientific mind.

Even if one may not be formally initiated by a guru, even just reading these texts provide such a perspective ( albeit intellectual). Slow ,steady, sincere pursuit may probably someday , in some life result in a Darshana.

Just a question, is Rshi ( Rishi) come from the word Rta ? As in the Rshi trying to understand and interpret Rta ?

Such an inspiring post! Thank you 🙏
Every now and then I feel seekers need to read something like this to keep us on our individual paths and not allow lethargy or fear to set in- especially because of all the turbulence in the world.

    my only question currently is

Is it ok if the shloka i recite everyday multiple times doesn’t match my favorite form of the Devi. It’s easy for me bring up the image of Devi Lalitha in my mind with eyes closed but the shloka i memorized and connect with is the Durga Saptashloki

    much regards

I understand that essentially they are all the same. What makes me pause is when specific dhyana shlokas that describe a specific form of a deity exist . A particular sound is connected to a particular form.

    Namaste Ma’am,

Thank you so much for this wonderful article.

We needed your guidance on something, so thought of asking you here –

We are in a relationship for the last 5 years. We are very close to each other and have a unique understanding about each other.
We rarely do any arguments or disagree on anything during the normal course of life but every 2-3 weeks, we get into a very strange fight that feels like will be tearing us apart 😞, the fight starts without any reason in every 10-15 days. I have already sent him to jail once out of this fight and couldn’t stay in the same place as a result of the incident that happened. We had to stay under police radar for a year and then we were able to stay with each other again. Again it repeated this week. It became so big that the neighbours called security officers. We otherwise feel ‘ completely one’ with each other in all other domains of life including Spirituality( Gunas 36/36, also he is Aq Asc. with Venus in 9th Libra, and I am Libra Asc with a Rahu in 9th Gemini). In these last 5 years we have taken countless efforts to stop this but it looks like completely getting out of our reach. If you could please guide us to find out what could be possible reasons for this. He told me that I become a different person during that time. My face changes and so does my voice and I become aggressive( as if something has entered inside me) I accuse him of things not true at all. I broke many things in our rented place and last time I threw our hom kunda 😣 and misplaced gods murtis also out of rage( I am otherwise extremely religious person😞).

Could you kindly guide us if there’s Any remedy we can do like Varahi Devi puja or anything else?

    Thank you 🙏🏻

      Hi there

try to find a good marriage counsellor or some professional who can help. if it is a medical issue then consult a suitable consultant.

also try to take up some regular mantra and whenever you feel you are getting aggressive you should try to hold on to your mantra. eg if you choose soham , then focus on your breath and keep your emotions in control using the Soham.
do pranayam as a lifetime practice, it will help.
      and do this http://psychologicallyastrology.com/2020/02/20/the-sure-shot-solution-to-prosperity/
Shri sukta is capable of handle evil eye also if you are sincere about it.
keep a bottle of Gangajal or mantra charged water with you and drink it during the day. it should settle the issues from the inside.

if you feel that you are under an evil influence then you will have to find some genuine practitioner in your town who can help you.

Also let me know how to select and identify a good reiki teacher.

Thanks in advance. You are doing immense help by providing your vast knowledge without any charges and fee. 🙏

      Hi there
you can go for reiki healing if you have a genuine practitioner in your town.
you will have to ask around.
but generally you will feel positive vibes, calmness etc in the presence of a good practicioner.

and if you wish to do it yourself, you can do it.

      this is how –
listen or recite the Vishnu Sahastranama, if you are listening to it, follow the audio words from a book.
if you are with your dad, you can touch his arm or his chest gently as you listen to the VSN. visualise every word of the VSN entering his body and visualise him glowing with health.
if your dad is somewhere else, visualise him in your mind and imagine him happy and healthy.
after the audio is over, think of Bhagwan Vishnu and Devi Laxmi with gratitude and request Bhagwan Dhanvantari to help your father.
you can also charge water with the VSN and mix it with his drinking water. to do this hold a small copper pot /lota or glass in your hands as you listen to the VSN and visualise the energy entering it.
surround him with the power of Bhagwan Vishnu in every way you can think of.
eg recite the small Shri Dhanvantari shlok over his medicines and food.
also advise him to think of Bhagwan Vishnu and Devi Laxmi Shri Dhanvantari or his Kuldevata or Ishtadevata all the time.

then as he is your father, tell the deities that you are doing this as a good child and because you love and care for your dad. so to help you.

      life events happen
and these energies help us face them with courage.

energy healing works on the astral body.
if the problem has reached the physical level then all medical procedures have to be done as per the medical advice.
