Direct Rahu Ketu and completion of Karma

Last Updated on October 30, 2024 by Tejaswini

If you are a student of Jyotish, do remember these two points about Rahu and Ketu.

1. Always use the True Rahu and Ketu position in your calculations. There is nothing like a ‘Mean’ averaged out position of a graha in Jyotish. We have to use the specific precise position of the graha at the time /space. Never use Mean Rahu Ketu as you will make errors in your predictions.

2. Rahu and Ketu are not always retrograde. They move in the forward / direct motion for about 25 – 30days in a year. They change directions about 2 – 4 times in a year. (Just like the 5 Tara graha – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). Rahu Ketu also go briefly stationary as they change their direction of motion. Their stationary phase can be prolonged during the eclipse time direction changes, where it can go for upto 10 days. They can also be direct for a few days during any time of the year.

Rahu Ketu’s direction and speed depends on the ‘wobbling’ of the Moon. This ‘wobbling’ is caused by the interaction of the gravities of the Sun, Earth and the Moon. Thus this is a combined effect on the movement of the Moon. Rahu and Ketu’s direction and speed are thus a result of the Sun, the Moon and the Earth together. Thus their effect on the living beings, non living things and the events on this earth is very critical. (The direct – retrograde motion of the Tara graha is dependant on their position relative to the Sun.)

  • So about 10% of us have Rahu and Ketu in the forward direction in our birth charts. This is birth condition, thus a a life time energy for a significant population.
  • Also all of us experience the direct Rahu Ketu energy around 2- 4 times in a year. This is a temporary transit energy but significant karmic events occur during this time frame in all our lives.

I will discuss both these aspects of the direct Rahu Ketu – birth and transit energies, in this post.

Rahu Ketu are the two lunar nodes. They are the flow of experience through your individual soul. Rahu is the desires you wish to experience. And Ketu is the deepest learnings you have gained through the desires you have already experienced to the full. (I have written over 50 posts on Rahu Ketu so do refer the index page)

Rahu Ketu direct in the birth chart

If you have Rahu Ketu direct in your birth chart then you are a different personality. You are more interested in the ‘other’/ non material things in life. You may have loads of wealth, fame, position, power etc. As direct Rahu Ketu eventually do give these material things. But your primary focus will be the ‘other’ things. And this is not a conscious decision. It is pure instinct which turns you away from the material gains and you run after this infinite internal gain. You are not bothered about things like your education, job, money, romance, etc. You are after the greatest wealth that is possible, you want to realise the ‘Self’ itself. Your Rahu has now the greatest Desire possible and your Ketu is ready with the greatest Learnings possible. Both push and pull you relentlessly towards the Self. And you want this to the core of your being.

You have a very real chance of completing your entire karmic cycle in this life itself. Depending on the power of rest of the chart, Self realisation, Moksh is a distinct possibility in this life itself.

In your life, you will go through highly karmic and mostly unavoidable situations. And each situation will unveil a hidden aspect of your self, always pushing you on a progressive curve upwards. You will internally feel desperate in a way. As you know that you have to finish off all unfinished business with others now. There is an underlying sense of urgency. You might have this overwhelming feeling that your time is very short. And you have to complete a lot in this very limited time. Life, for you is on an overdrive. You will make every attempt to assimilate all the experiences you go through in this life. You want to convert them into the deepest learnings. You know that you can convert these learnings plus your unending thirst for Knowledge into that ultimate prize, Self Knowledge.

To the others around you, you will seem dynamic, intelligent and always on the move. You are never deeply attached to people or situations. Yet you seem very highly engrossed and involved in these too. You are simultaneously involved and disinterested. eg You are quite helpful as you do not wish for others to go through what all you went through. But despite this deep concern for others, you are not actually involved in any one else’s life. This behaviour may sometimes confuse the people around you. Thus you will not have close friends but you will have admirers and followers.

On the material levels, direct Rahu Ketu will give you lots of opportunities for success. You will have money, fame, respect, etc. You will be known as a public figure in some way or the other. People will look up to you.

Even if the rest of the chart is not that powerful, you will complet one entire cycle of evolution in this life itself. Rahu Ketu direct in the birth chart is an assurance that you will make a big leap in evolution.

One tip for you. Observe yourself very systematically when the nodes go direct in transit. They go direct about 2 – 4 times in a year for a few days here and there and for weeks around the eclipses. Note the events in your life in this time frame. Keep track of the omens, dreams and any other indications you get in your Dhyan etc.

www.psychologicallyatrology.com

Rahu Ketu direct in transit affect everyone on this earth.

This part is applicable to all of us. Even for those who have Rahu Ketu retrograde in their birth charts. You can make use of the energy of the direct Rahu Ketu in the transits. This is how you do it,

  • First note the time frame when Rahu and Ketu are stationary or in direct motion. They are stationary for a few days around the eclipses. They are often direct around the eclipses. And also go direct for few days here and there during the rest of the year.
  • Note if your ascendant lord is conjunct this transiting stationary/ direct Rahu or Ketu. If so, note the events which occur during these few days in your life. These events will have a life changing impact on you. Especially if your ascendant lord is Mars, Jupiter or Saturn then it can be a lifetime energy change. Eg – 2025 March eclipse season will see Saturn with Rahu. So then Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants will go through unavoidable karmic events. Eg – if you are a Leo or Cancer ascendant, then you might always see something karmic triggered around eclipses.
  • Note which other planets are getting conjunct with this stationary / direct Rahu Ketu in transit. Suppose it is the Moon, then see which houses in your chart are controlled by the Moon. These houses will experience karmic events which have a long term effect. Actually this is the real reason why eclipses have so much power on us. It is an interaction of the Sun and the Moon both, with the stationary /direct nodes.
  • Note if the stationary /direct Rahu or Ketu are falling on any of your birth planets or your ascendant degree. If so, then that specific area of your life will see some significant change linked to karma.

The nodes changing their direction in transit have an impact on all of us. Especially if you are reading a Prashna chart and the nodes are direct on that day, be very careful when interpreting. Often the results will be opposite of what you would normally expect. This unexpectedness is evident even in business or in the stock market or in sports or competitions and exams etc. Especially in business, Rahu and Ketu can give helpful pointers for managing unexpected turbulence and contrary results. If you have sample charts with Rahu and Ketu stationary/ direct at birth then do observe these individuals. Jyotish is basically observing human nature and behaviour and correlating this with the graha.

Students of Jyotish should learn basic math and astronomy as it helps in understanding the graha. Get into the habit of opening the Panchangam daily. Note the planetary movements – direction, speed, conjunctions. This will help you get better with your predictions with time.

(I randomly started writing this post on 10th Aug. As I checked the planetary positions, the nodes are direct for 4 days from 9th to 12th Aug. )

    Respected Madam

Thank you very much for this blog. After reading your blog I checked my horoscope and discovered that Nodes are in direct motion in my horoscope!! Your observations relating to impact of this position of the nodes not only resonates with my life events but my feelings,my inner world which I m not able to explain to any one. Maam, though I was aware that some thing weird has been happening since 48 years which I could never completely comprehend but I always evolved and somewhere down in my heart I always used to believe that there is some objective behind all these appearantly ugly and painful experiences.Your blog has come at a time where at soul level I needed some guidance, some assurance to carry on this path of evolution and self realisation.

Thanks. Madam,my humble request to write about 5th house in depth. I have Rahu in 5th house.I have read about Rahu and Ketu a lot in your blogs. But I need to understand the depth of 5th house and its connotations not only in terms of material gain or loss but also in terms of how this house can help in self realisation. There are blogs of yours with respect to 5th house but the same are from the point of view of mantra siddhi and dharma trikona etc. There are lots of materials available online also but they all discuss about 5th house in only mundane terms. They do not discuss about it’s role in self realisation.

    Namaste Tejaswini ji,

What apps can we use to find out when Rahu/Ketu go direct or become stationary as part of transit or in birth charts?

    Thanks!

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
change the setting in your app. all apps show ‘mean Rahu Ketu’ by default. change it to ‘True Rahu Ketu’
true nodes will be given as direct or retrograde.

and for finding out if they are stationary – check their positions a few days before and after your chosen date.

    Hi mam

Are are there any signs(emotional, behavioural) which can indicate that our karma with some situation or person is complete.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
generally with karmic relationships – the interaction will be very fast paced, things changing practically every day. you wll exchange vast information/ activities/ emotions in a very short span of time. there will be dramatic ups and downs in this time. yet there will be a restlessness, like you cannot live without each other but yet cannot live with each other types.

then as the time is complete – they will vanish and very suddenly from your life. you will miss them fr a few days then they will fade. even their memories will fade from your mind. later when you look back the interaction will seem like a dream, like it never happened.

i have written a few posts on karmic relationships.

I read that dasha of rahu is about 80% of our karmic debts but in the list of worst dasha periods…there is no mention of rahu dasha periods….why is it so?

Also, can our jobs/activities be karmic ?Can we discern what we are doing new in life and what is carried over from the past?

      2. astrologerbydefault Avatar

        Hi there
i do not agree that Rahu Mahadasha will complete 80% of karmic debts. do ask the person who wrote this line.

and why should Rahu or Ketu mahadasha be the worst time frames?
in my personal life, i completed my education, started my job, (i was selected in 5 superlative positions, all on the first attempt, chose 1 of those), met my soul mate, got married to him – all in the Ketu Mahadasha.

my cousin – in his Rahu Mahadasha progressed with such clarity in his life purpose. after Rahu MD ended. it was the Jupiter MD and in his own words it felt that brakes had been put in his life. the smooth sailing of his Rahu MD became an obstacle course in Juipter MD.

Rahu and Ketu power our charts, see if you can understand their power and utilise it.

everything in your life is karmic. every single thing. you can either use the situations to rebalance the debts or use them to create even more tangles , the choice is yours alone.

Hello mam, what is a more admirable quality, loyalty or doing what is right, I understand this theme has happened in Mahabharatha also, for eg: Between spouses, if one of them is doing something morally wrong, is the duty of the other spouse to support it? or do the right thing?
My conciseness is not able to decide between the both, both feels correct? pls help

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
you have to decide for yourself.

if you know that the spouse is doing something wrong, then how can you support him/her?
but it is possible that you do not know the complete situation /facts/ story.
so clearly talk to that person, tell him /her what you feel and that you have some doubts.
see what answers you get, and then decide.

Tejaswini ji, Thanks for this post. checked my chart and it shows them as direct for True Rahu and Ketu, while retrograde for (mean) R/K.

This gives a perspective on the heavy karmic load of this life and the splinter in mind always pushing towards spiritual knowledge. Most of the interests have fallen away, specially after mid 40’s, but this push towards seeking still remains.

    Hello ma’am!

After reading the article I tried to search list of all dates when rahu Ketu went direct but could not.

However I was randomly checking charts of some keys events whose date I remembered and I had rahu over my natal ketu (ardra) and Venus (Ashwini)

Right now transiting over my ascendent lord.

Checked for eclipse but somehow on the day or + – 2 3 days around eclipse did not show they are direct in Drik panchang.

    Kinda amazed.

    Thank you!

when analyzing Rahu-Ketu axis, should we also consider D9 chart, taking axis in D9 as potentiality, as more subjective, while D1 axis showing what will manifest?

Also does direct R/K impact axis interpretation?
    Regards

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
Rahu Ketu by themselves are subjective in nature.
D9 is the ‘soul’ of the chart and the D1 is the ‘body’, both have to be considered.

yes. you have to consider the effect.

    Namaste Ma’am,

    Happy Independence Day

What is the difference between मातृभूमि and जन्मभूमि ?
I mean, if I literally translate them to English, then it’s ‘homeland’ and ‘birthplace’ respectively.

Also, I had another very important question regarding this :

I was born and brought up, and have lived my whole life till now, in a different state(State 1) than the one where I ‘culturally’ belong/ or where my ‘roots’ lie(State 2). Now by my common sense, I am assuming that my जन्मभूमि is the one where I was born, more specifically, the exact city, where I was born.

    1. What should be/is my मातृभूमि? My opinion/experience is that, this city in State 1, has that ‘motherly feeling’ which I get. Although I have never gone to my exact paternal village, only near it, so can’t say anything regarding that too, but that land doesn’t feel ‘mine’ in any way(State 2).

    2. Regarding the responsibilities people have (as far as I know) for their मातृभूमि, suppose that my assumptions are incorrect, still, should not I have any responsibilities for my birth city where I have been raised?

    3. How do political/cultural boundaries define our identities? I mean, not the one by the law of the land, but with reference to what ‘I feel’ when I think of my identity regarding my मातृभूमि ? I live/was born in a city, in a state, in India, in Asia, on Earth, which one should I identify with the most?

Also, isn’t भारतवर्ष our मातृभूमि anyway, so does it really matter a lot if one was born in the land of भारत and stays there too but in a different location?

Sorry if my assumptions/questions were silly in any way.

    Thank you Ma’am.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
      this is my personal opinion.
If you were born in Bharat and are currently a citizen of Bharat then both are the same for you.
If you were born in Bharat and are currently a citizen of some other nation, then Bharat is your Janmabhoomi and that nation is your Matrubhoomi.
we have always defined nations by political boundaries, so i do not overthink this.

personally, several nations attract me, i know i have a deep connect with them. i have been to several of these for work. they have always welcomed me and i thank those lands for that kindness.

But, in my current life, my love and loyalty both belong to Bharat. this land is my Mother, my Father and my Guru, all in one. this land has given me that space to take birth, grow up, raise my family, earn my living, it has nourished me on so many levels, it is my Bharat.

I had a doubt regarding a line of your post “How to not create Karma?” dated 08/03/2019 :

    1. “I should do my Dharm because I should do it, for no other reason”

In the above line, in the “because I should do it” part, what if someone thinks like : “because I ‘feel’ I should do it”. Does the addition of ‘feel’ drastically change things? And if yes, how should one remove it?

It would be very kind of you to clear this doubt.

    Thank you Ma’am.

      Hi there
of course you will feel about that action. you are not a robot.
you will have an opinion on the intellectual level. you will have some emotions regarding that action.
but finally you should do it because it is a part of your duty.

simple eg – i sleep late but i wake up as usual at 4:30am and i feel tired. now i have to cook breakfast at 6am for my son before he goes to school. i feel irritated but ultimately i have to do the action. and i also have to get rid of the irritation as my son is going to eat this food. the food has to be cooked with happy intentions else it will cause him trouble. so i have to control my mind, change my emotion and cook.

another eg- in office, there is a situation. i can choose to ignore it as it will cause real problems about 5yrs later. and i will be transferred in 2 yrs. but my sense of duty does not let me ignore it. so i try to tackle the situation now.
another officer in this situation may choose to ignore it and let his next successor handle it.

you have to decide for yourself.
ultimately your own conscience is judging your actions.
the test is – if you can sleep properly at night with what you have done or not done.

    1. If in the 5th or 9th house = good
    3. In the 3rd, 6th or 11th house = not good

How to interpret this, after all if Rahu or Ketu are in the 5th house they are also in the 11th so is it good or not good?
Does it mean that if Rahu is in the 5th it is good and if in the 11th it is not good.

      Hi there
      you are welcome 🙂

      yes,
the node in the 3rd 6th or 11th can cause problems especially if he is completely free to do what he wants.
rahu and ketu both work in the energy / subtle/ astral levels, they are your own deepest inclinations. they need the support of one of the other planets to convert their inclinations to some type of material result.
so if they are alone and not aspected they give ‘undefinable feelings’ which can cause stress. but you cannot pinpoint the issue as there is no material result. its all at the ‘undefinable feelings’ type of level.

then the 3rd 6th 11th are the trishaday houses
      https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2023/12/23/trishaday-the-darker-side-of-the-11th-house/
wrote a bit on trishaday in this post
“Trishaday houses create unsolvable problems in life. These problems creep into your life, silently, insidiously. Thus it takes quite a long time to realise what has happened. And also, by this time, these issues have gone in so deep that it is not possible to solve them. You have to either learn to live with them or cut your losses by decisively breaking off with these issues. Either way it can be traumatic. There are three trishadaya houses – 3rd, 6th and the 11th. Among these, the 11th is the worst, followed by the 6th and then the 3rd. The owners of these houses and also the planets placed in these should be evaluated for their capacity to cause this sort of creeping trouble.”

also wrote on the 3rd here

and several posts on the 6th which you can see from the index

these 3 houses are also the upchay houses. whatever they indicate /create, it increases with time..

I stumbled across your blog while looking for some information on identifying Kuldevi some months back. And since then, I have been hooked. Like so many others before me, I feel privileged to have the good fortune of learning such deep aspects about Jyotish and Spirituality from you. My own spiritual journey has got accelerated in last few months and I have also started my own study on Jyotish.

I noted that my Rahu and Ketu are direct, with Rahu in the Lagna. I also have Guru Chandal Yog with Venus in the sixth bhava. I read your article https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2019/12/16/guru-chandal-yog-jupiter-conjunct-rahu/

In the article, you have mentioned that such a person should take advantage of Jupiter Mahadasha – Ketu antardasha. This is coming up shortly for me in the next few months. Can you guide me on what can I do to make judicious use of this coming time?

Hello, I am appreciating the depth of knowledge you share. I’m especially appreciating your emphasis on spiritual transformation and your direct understanding of this.

I have read/watched everything I could find that you’ve written about Ketu.
In your experience, if a Mercury MD is particularly transformative and ego annihilating (like Ketu MD is described sometimes), in a horoscope with multiple indicators for deep spiritual growth, does Ketu MD tend to ease up and be favorable? Do Ketu/Rahu tend to yield deep desires related to 5th/11th house (my birth chart) even if still disattaching from them? I’m in Mercury/Saturn now and will be age 42-49 in Ketu MD.

I deeply appreciate your thoughts! Thank you very much for your time and energy and many blessings!!

    1. Tejaswini Avatar

      Hi there
thank you for the encouragement 🙂

It will depend on where your Ketu is placed.
eg if he is conjunct Mercury then the same Mercury energy will continue but now also on the inner energy/spiritual levels also.
if he is otherwise well placed and with the other planets or aspected by these others – then you will get the material benefits related to these other planets as a fruit of your past positive karmic actions.
if he is generally malefic then these other planet’s keywords will give stress on the mental levels.
but in any case it is Ketu so you will feel internally/intellectually detached from all this.

the 40s, esp after 45yrs onwards subtly change your mindset, the Rahu Ketu also approach maturity, ie all planets mature, so you will be better able to handle the inner changes.

do your daily puja / routine so that your mind remains in control of your intelligence.
