Extraordinary power of Panchayatan puja

Bharat has always been one from the Himalayas to the Ocean. And all our Maharishis have endorsed this, supported this and worked tirelessly to emphasise this essential unity. Our pujas, our pilgrimages, our Devbhasha Sanskrutam, our Vedic Dharma are the threads which bind the nation together.

And among these daily pujas there is one very typical puja which most traditional Hindu families perform. Here five Devatas are worshipped together and it called the Panchayatan. The Panchayatan system is very ancient, it is described in several Puranas – the Narada Purana, Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, Matsya Puran and in the Shrimat Devi Bhagwat Mahapuran. As per the Mahapuran, the Devi Bhavani is worshipped in the centre, Bhagwan Vishnu in the northeast, Bhagwan Shankar in the southeast, Bhagwan Ganesha in southwest and Bhagwan Surya in the northwest. And as per other Purans, you can also keep your Ishtadevata in the centre and surrounded by the other 4 Devatas.

The greatest Maharishi of relatively recent times, Swami Adishankaracharya has emphasised this Panchayatan puja format. As is the most powerful and most suited especially for the householder level people. And this was because it has two major benefits.

  • This is the best way of bringing together all the people of Bharat, to make them feel the inherent unity of the nation and the Vedic Dharma which powers its collective.
  • And on the individual levels, this is the best way to progress faster in your spiritual practice. This type of Puja expands your mind, to help it more easily appreciate the true nature of the Vedic Dharma and the Vedic Devata.

In fact Adishankaracharya upgraded the energy of the puja. The puja can be performed with the human shaped moortis of the Devata. But he recommended that special stones be used as the representative moorti of the Devatas. These would be raw stones directly from nature as the moorti of the Devata. And these were not any random stones picked up from the ground. These are stones from all over Bharat and found in certain high energy rivers. These are –

  • 1. Shaligram – this is a black colored rounded stone and often with the fossil imprints of ammonites. It is found only in the Gandaki river in the current land of Nepal, ie the Northern part of India. This stone represents Bhagwan Vishnu.
  • 2. Banalingam – this is a rounded cylindrical stone with reddish brownish marks and found only in the Narmada river in Central India. This represents Bhagwan Shankar.
  • 3. Sphatik – this is the crystal quartz. You must have seen it worshipped in rounded polished forms. But it can be worshipped in the rough form also. It is found only in the dried up course of the now underground river Saraswati in West India and this represents Bhagwan Surya.
  • 4. Sonbhadra – This is a red colored stone is found only in the river Son in East India and this represents Bhagwan Ganapati.
  • 5. Ambikashila – this is a greyish silvery stone found only in the river Svarnamukhi in South India and this represents the Devi.
A collection of five different natural stones representing Hindu deities arranged against a vibrant yellow background.

Earlier if you wanted to do panchayatan puja in the real sense, you would have actually had to go to these places. Walk in the river beds. Request the Devi of the River and the connected Devata and then search for the stones in the river water or at the riverbanks. Feel the power of the Devi / Devata around you. And then the stone which you are given from this river, which naturally comes to your hand, this is what you had to take home with you and worship. Thus you do not simply worship just the stone, but you mentally amplify that moment of your oneness with that Devata in that natural surrounding. This stone also carries within it the intensity of your ‘search’ for the Devata and your happiness of having found Him/Her.

And why stones sourced from rivers? This is because the rivers represents the movement of the water. And here ‘water’ symbolises the cosmic water, ‘Ambh’. ‘That’ which was present ‘before existence and before non-existence’ as per the 1st Rk of the Naasadiya sukta. Creation began when this ‘cosmic water’ was moved by desire. And this energy is also connected to the stone you get from the natural river.

Today you can buy these stones from a jewellery shop or online and do the Panchayatan as Adi Shankaracharya had prescribed. But do try to go to these rivers at least once in your lifetime. This will help you understand the energy dynamics of the puja you are performing.

Apart from the energy, Swami Adishankaracharya wanted every follower of Sanatan Dharma to do such Panchayatan puja for a very practical reason. His vision was that every family would have these 5 stones sourced from all corners of Bharat in the home Devghar. Everyone would do their daily pujas on these stones. Some family member would have gone to that place in Bharat and brought it back with due reverence. He would have shared his story of his travel and his emotions as he picked up the stone from the river. And this energy would become a permanent part of the family puja and the family energy. Thus subconsciously every generation would continually appreciate the underlying unity of Bharat. Hindus would travel to these sacred rivers, interact with each other and come closer.  And everyone would eventually develop a common nationalist feeling.

A depiction of Panchayatan Puja featuring stone representations of five deities arranged around a central platform with a Shivalinga, set against a simple background.

And on the Dharmic level, people would take the next step onwards, move from the human figure moortis to the natural stone moorti of the Devatas. Expand their minds with the Panchayatan pujas.

Worshipping Devatas in sheela/ rock form is always more powerful than worshipping them in carved human shaped moorti forms. The uncarved stones directly link with the sub-conscious mind without any interference from the conscious mind. The raw stones, directly from nature, carry with them the original power of Devi Prakruti, the Greatest Artist ever, unaltered by human minds/hands. Human minds/ hands cannot match Her Art. Natural is always the most beautiful.

Carved moortis are suitable for beginners. At this stage your mind needs the support of the human image as a focus point. You need to see the Devata as a human so that you can relate more easily. Eg you make beautiful jewellery or beautiful dresses for the moorti, which gives more emotional support to your mind. But this also means that the energy of the Devata is at the lowest. So it is advisable to pass through this level as fast as possible.

Then as the mind expands, the emotional mind is more stable and the intelligence/ Buddhi starts opening up, you move one step onwards. Now you should worship uncarved stones as moorti of the Parameshwar. Your mind has moved onwards from its need to cling to the human form but still it needs a form to focus on. And for common householders, ie the majority of the Hindus this is a very desirable stage to be in. Your emotional mind (Manomayakosh) is satisfied because you can still touch the moorti, see it and adorn it with ornaments etc. And your intellectual mind (Vijnyanmaykosh) also gets the chance to work on itself, to expand itself.

Both carved and uncarved moorti forms belong to the Pruthvi mahabhoot, they are solid earthy. The Pruthvi tattva is the lowest energy level of the Eternal Parameshwar. So the next ‘moorti’ upgrade is that you will worship after the Panchayatan puja format is the Agni moorti. Here you visualise the adored Devata in the flames of the Agni. This is a more intellectually rigorous phase. You enter this when your emotional mind is almost stabilised and you need to work only on the Buddhi component. Now onwards you will do Yajnyas. And if you have to do Archana/ Puja then you will do puja of the Agni – flame of the Deepak. ie you will invoke your deity in the flame of the Deepak! At this level, your mind is simultaneously expanding and yet becoming subtle. You stop relying on the solid moorti forms, you adopt the Agni form as the moorti of the Parameshwar. You are now moving from the more diluted Puranic/ Itihasic phase pujas to the pure Vedic Yajnas.

And after this, as you refine your mind further, make your Buddhi more prashodhit, you will eventually reach the final goal. This is the Keval Advaita, sometimes called the ‘Videha’. The Atmajnyani Mahapurush are in this state, they are one with the formless, abstract, ‘bodiless’, Amoorta Parameshwar or the Nirgun Brahma in his pure energy, intelligent, awaren, conscious form.

We humans are ‘humans’ because only we have a functional Vijnyanmaykosh, the discriminating intellect, Buddhi, Vivek, Vjnyan. Only we have the capacity to understand, Experience and then Transcend that Experience to Realise Pure Existence. But you have to activate your Vivek, learn to use it, learn to channelise its tremendous power. And only the Astik Darshan Shastra ie the Ved, teaches us how to do this. And the Panchayatan puja is an important link in this evolution process.

What does the actual pooja comprise of? Thank you for writing on this.

    1. Tejaswini Avatar

      Hi there
puja basically means the Shodashopachar puja.

but depending on your Guru /mantra diksha and your Ishtadevata you can do additional mantra.

and for most householders, time is a constraint so you can reduce it to the bare minimum.
The simplest procedure is this. –
      Light a Deepak and incense.
Wash the moortis with clean water, dry them place them back in their places.
then put kumkum, saffron, sandalwood, bhasma, flowers etc whatever you have. say the basic mantra “Shri —– namah”
Offer some naivedya/ food / panchamrut/ fruits/ Khadisakhar etc whatever you have to the deities.
      then an Arti with camphor.
then distribute the food to everyone as the deity’s prasad.

    Namaste Ma’am

In your ‘Chakra, Graha and the Rashi’ post dated 2020/07/17

In the part where you wrote about links among different chakras, grahas and rashis

For Venus – You have written ‘masculine Taurus’ at Ida and ‘feminine Libra’ at Pingala.

Is it a typo or the case of Venus is different?

    Thank you Ma’am.

Namaste, when we do japa, is using the same mantra as important as consistency in practice? Eg: I’m unable to recite the same mantra with equal concentration everyday as my mind tends to wander. In such a case, will chanting different mantras be as beneficial or one should aim to just chant the same mantra even if it is without concentration? I read on your blog that manasik japa has minimum rules and one can do them anywhere and in any condition. Does this apply even to pronunciation of the mantra? Is just right intention important? Does listening to mantras have equal benefit as japa if mind is not settled? Thank you for your time

      Hi there
you will get one mantra from your Guru and then after you ‘level up’ you will get another from him.
but for this you will need a proper Atmajnyani Guru who will give the mantras as per your level.
this is done in the Shri Vidya sampraday, but you should be very very careful of people who ‘advertise’ themselves as Shri Vidya Gurus, be very careful. choose your Guru correctly.

if you are not sure, then the safest option is the Soham. this is the final stage of awareness/ Self.

its like if you are travelling from Delhi to Mumbai. you think of Mumbai, you keep repeating your final destination and sooner or later you reach Mumbai /Soham sthiti
or you can first think of Jaipur, then think of Gandhinagar, then Surat and then Mumbai., and you reach the same destination

so either do the sequence if you know
or do the safest and easiest Soham.

manasik Jaap has no rules. you can do it anywhere. some mistakes are ok.
eg Soham is always on whenever you are breathing, so you can do it consciously as you brush your teeth if you feel like..

you can listen to the mantras /shloks /stotras etc if you want but make sure that they are being recited properly , check with the text first and then choose the singer / audio.

    Namaste Tejaswini ji

Thank you always for sharing this immense knowledge.

Are these stones still available in their natural form in the specified areas?

While doing puja in Agni tatva, while visualising devata in the Agni..does the sadak see the Agni in the form of say Durga ma with the hair and those eyes, vishnu Ji with the Sudharshan symbolic or say bhagwan shiva with his jata, etc OR there is no such form but worshiping devata in Agni fiem without any such virtual roop.

I am asking this because I have seen people sharing the pictures taken from the yagna and trying to find the images of godd in the 2D picture and I have observed everyone has there own perception of devata of that 2D image . Hope I was able to put the question in understable way.

    Regards

      Hi there
      yes, they are.
recently one of my colleagues went to Nepal for darshan and she described going to the Gandaki river and locating the stone in the water. she said that she could feel the divinity. we should go to these natural places. Devi energy is most accessible to us in places with minimum human interference.

Why do you want to stick to the human form? are the Devatas ‘human’?
try to progress beyond this need to see everything in human shape.
it is emotionally comforting to see human form of Devatas but till when ???
the Dev /Devi do not have human forms! we have Reduced them to human form because we cannot bear their energy in their Viraat Akhaldamandalakaara Roop!

This is exactly why Adi Shankarcharya wanted us to do puja of raw stones. to progress beyond human images.

but unfortunately today we have humans going one step lower, they have now reduced the Devatas to AI generated humans /cartoons /ghibli / chibi .. this means that human minds are becoming more and more emotionally unstable.
anyways – each one has their own life choices

We worship the Flame as Dev.
Flame of Deepak is differnet from Flames of Yajnya, again Anteyesti Flames are different – look at the fire Flames – each one has a different message – look at the flame as the mantras are said over it – the Flames “dance’ in rhythm with the mantras.. you can ‘hear’ the Fire ‘speaking’ to you if you are alert enough

      Om Agnimele Purohita…

        Hi Mam,
Thank you so much for this post.
        My question is:
If I feel like concentrating on a single candle flame and mentally reciting ‘Soham,’ can I do this instead of a homa, or should I use a single deepam for this purpose instead of a candle?

        that is called ‘tratak’
        you can do it
        but increase the time gradually.

Hello Ma’am. My Bharatanatyam Guru taught us the Abhinaya for Sarasvati Namastubhyam mantra on Vijayadashmi, that she learned from her Guru. I feel it’s the one mantra I have received initiation in. After reading your content, I have started doing it before my studies and it really helps 🙂

      Hi there
Bharatnatyam is in itself a Shaastra, if you have learnt it properly from a Guru then you have its Diksha and you can use it to realise the Self.

      1. anon123 Avatar

        Thanks Ma’am.
Also learned the Sarasijakshulu Shabdam, portraying Shri Krishna galavanting around, hiding the gopis’ clothes and harassing them, stealing butter with friends… Even a kid told Ma’am she was uncomfortable performing the step of looking at naked people and teasing them.

        Hi there
all this is not a part of the original Mahabharat. the Itihas does not have any of these stories about Shri Krishna.
do read the original Sanskrit / translation , buy the Gita press books!

i have repeated this 100s of times in my blog/comments/answers

everyone must read the original Mahabharat by Maharishi Vedvyas. it does not have anything of this sort!

all these puranic fantasy stories have ruined the minds of Hindus today. avoid these.
but if you cannot bear the facts / logic /real Jnyan of the Itihas then do continue with the Purans.
and if you feel like it, do pray that in some life you will be able to read the original Itihas by the Maharishis.

also read the Ramayan by Maharishi Valmiki – it ends with Shri Ram rajyabhishek.
there is no ‘Uttar Ramayan’, this is also the fantasy of some later person.

texts either begin or end with the phalashruti.
Ramayan phalashruti is at the Shri Ram rajyabhishek.
Mahabharat Phalashruti is in the beginning. after Rishi Sauti lists out the 18 chapters of the Mahabharat he gives the phalashruti. that is it, 18 chapters.
the Harivamsha puran is not a part of the Mahabharat

    Hello,
Your repeated words have inspired me to take up reading the complete version of Mahabharata, with English translation, I plan to refer to the original Sanskrit for the more profound sections.

My question is that I was told not to keep or read aloud the Mahabharata at home as it causes family feuds. I hope it will be okay to read this at home?

Your video on Saturn and moon was very helpful. Would you be able to make a similar video on Saturn and Sun? If moon is the mind, Sun is the soul. And I wonder how these two interact? I do have this Sun Saturn, opposition in my chart too, and also Saturn in Scorpio, 6 places away from both moon and mars, so it is a constant struggle managing these energies 🙁

    Thank you.

      Hi there
if you feel scared to read the books by our Maharishis/ keep the books by our Maharishis in your home, then i really have no words.
best pray to them for the courage to read their words. either in this life or some future life..

sometimes i wonder what has happened to these so-called followers of Vedic Dharma.
      this level of fear!

      basic concept –
if you are afraid of something dont do it.
but try to think on what makes you afraid like this

at some point in your evolution, you have to regulate your emotional mind and allow your intellectual mind to dominate..

      1. Mandar Madali Avatar
        Mandar Madali

I too have heard similar unfound claims while growing up – things like don’t keep Krishna-Arjuna’s Rath photo at home, will cause family disputes (Mahabharata) at home; Shankh kept in devghar shd be filled with water and shouldn’t be blown – will indicate start of wars, so result in disputes at home; If three people are going out together, carry a stone cause 3 is unlucky etc. And at the time they sounded real due to all the fightings in the joint family!

Now I know that with any action, the intention matters most.

      2. Tejaswini Avatar

        Hi there
some claims are rooted in some truth, but if the claims create fear, distrust, shame, guilt etc then these claims are counter productive.

you can follow these claims if you are unsure , but internally always pray to the Devatas/ Guru for intelligence so that you understand things.

I am not afraid to read it 🙂 In fact very much looking forward to the full version now, Had read the very abridged version by C Rajagopalachari as a kid, but can now understand the intricacies and Vedantic teachings of the full version and with Sanskrit references now..

Your point about using Buddhi to regulate manas is well taken. Am aware strengthening Buddhi and burning off my karmas are the two essential things, I need to do in this life, as part of my evolution.

Your reply reminded me of, “Where there is duality, there is fear”; When established in Brahman, when nothing else is other than you, or other to you, that is Abhayam.

    Thank you.

    1. Tejaswini Avatar

      Hi there
a general principle – if you are afraid of something then you have to slowly guide your emotional mind/Manas with your intellectual mind/Buddhi.
if you are scared it means that some experience from your past lives/ present life has created an emotional impact. it can be dissolved slowly intelligently, not roughly as it can create another negative emotional impact

Many people consider Rahu and Ketu to have aspects like Jupiter and some say Rahu has aspect like Saturn, etc. What is your view on their aspects? Do they have aspects if they chaya grahas or they behave like Mars/ Saturn? Thanks

AI works as a data aggregator so there is no need to come to the actual website anymore.
