Analysing secret obstacles and Badhak planets

Last Updated on August 12, 2024 by Tejaswini

I wrote a few posts on the Badhak and Badhakesh (index page). Being aware of their activities in the horoscope helps as ‘Badha’ means hindrance. Each ascendant sign has one house as the badhak house, the sign in it is the badhak sign and the lord of this sign is the badhak lord. While reading the horoscope the badhak lord must be viewed with suspicion as at some point in life whichever house he influences can create obstacles. If you see situations suddenly going downhill or unexpected twists, check the birth and transit Badhak planet.

A quick re-cap of the ascendant signs and their ‘hindering’ houses, signs and planets.

  • Aries – 11th house Aquarius – Saturn
  • Taurus – 9th house Capricorn – Saturn
  • Gemini – 7th house Sagittarius – Jupiter
  • Cancer – 11th house Taurus – Venus
  • Leo – 9th house Aries – Mars
  • Virgo – 7th house Pisces – Jupiter
  • Libra – 11th house Leo – Sun
  • Scorpio – 9th house Cancer – Moon
  • Sagittarius – 7th house Gemini – Mercury
  • Capricorn – 11th house Scorpio – Mars
  • Aquarius – 9th house Libra – Venus
  • Pisces – 7th house Virgo – Mercury

As you know every house has one naisargik karak/ natural agent. And I have seen that this natural karak of the Badhak house also has a subtly hindering influence in life. The naisargik karak /natural agent of the 7th house is Venus. For the 9th house it is Jupiter and the 11th house is again Jupiter. Interestingly, it is the Gurus, either the Devguru (for 8 ascendant signs) or the Daityaguru (for 4 ascendant signs) who show a subtle Badhak-like influence on the horoscope.

I never take Jupiter’s promises at face value (post here). If he is auspicious and well placed in your birth horoscope chart then he will help you, support you in so very many ways. But if he is malefic, afflicted and unbalanced then can inflate your hope to such an extent that you act in ways completely against basic common sense. He can make you waste your resources, investing in options which are not really practical. Even in this he will help in his own way later, eg he can help you recover faster. But the damage that Jupiter gives is, in my opinion, the avoidable sort, if only you were a bit pragmatic and used your common sense before following him.

And Venus is the strictest Guru (post here) who tests you very thoroughly in the deepest ways. He will bring before you the sweetest desires and most delightful of temptations and wait for you to fall for them. He will do everything he can to divert you from your path. These are his tests which do not even look like tests. But if you pass them he will grant you the greatest prize, self-realization.

And the ‘remedy’ for both these planets is very simple. Everyone who does their daily /Nitya pujas and occasional /Naimittika pujas during our festivals etc is actually energising them positively and reducing their inauspicious effects. Every follower of Sanatan Dharma has to stick to a daily routine, at least 5mins in the morning and evening. This ensures continued blessings from the Guru.

Gurus giving ‘inauspicious effects’ sounds strange, but if you think, logically this is exactly what happens. As you deviate from your path of Dharma/ morals/ ethics/ common sense, the first thing you lose is the guidance/ support of the Guru. The Guru works through the parents, elders, teachers and all good people whom you look up to, who are qualified to give correct advice. So now you stop listening to good counsel and start engaging with people who give you wrong advice. The Gurus are your permanent well wishers but they are always watching carefully, ever evaluating your motives and behaviour. They are strict about this. So it is not the Gurus being inauspicious or malefic or cruel, it is in fact your own actions/ ego which will deprive you of the support of the Gurus. So this means that this hindrance will manifest mainly as the right advice which you will not follow. Or it will manifest as the wrong person giving you such a direction which will ensure that you will eventually fall into a ditch. This is the subtle Badha that the Gurus can create in your life, due to their being the natural karaks of the 7th, 9th 11th houses.

The behavioural remedy for this sort of hindrance is to be aware of the counsel you get from others. Be sure that he is the correct person to guide you. Then check if the advice is ethical /moral /Dharmic. Finally evaluate your own self, ie why are you doing this? Greed, selfishness, desire to overreach, cheat etc? Or because this is the right action? Only then act.

The badhak houses are typical. These are the places where the mistakes you make can hit deeply. You yourself create these obstacles by acting out of excessive greed, desire, etc.

  • The 7th house is your mirror energy, your spouse, your meditative practices, your business partners, your relationship with your adored deity and your relationship with your own Self. The 7th is the fair exchange of energy that you have with others.
  • The 9th is the Dharmasthan, all the luck, blessings, support you get in your life, all the opportunities to create punya/ merit for your future lives, also the auspiciousness of your ancestors, spouse and children, all this is the 9th house. This 9th gives you access to your own positive merit/ punya from your actions from your past lives.
  • And the 11th is the Labhsthan, the gains of every sort that you accrue using your personality and your environment. It is expected that you act in an ethical manner in the matters of this house and gain that which is fairly due to you. The 11th is the gains that you receive from your actions performed in this life.

Most problems in life can be resolved if you act intelligently and not under the influence of emotions. And to develop this mindset a behavioural change is necessary. And to effect this behavioural change, the mind has to be supported through your daily practice.

      Hi there
      depends on the specific question.

eg. maraks determine the timing of physical death but unless you have a strong 2nd/7th/venus you cannot accumulate money etc in life.

Thank you for the post, and happy new year!

Definitely resonated with points made regarding Guru, though personally more on the slippery slope of happy-go-lucky nature than ill-intended advices.

If you don’t mind me asking about one of past topics (as I do read and revisit your posts quite often and questions arise):

    1. Can you expand on birth rectification using divisional charts and asking questions? Particularly for younger people where not much events have happened yet (e.g. marriage, buying a house, etc.). Any brief clarification (or further post) is greatly appreciated, as I’m aware this is a very loaded question.

    2. I would love to incorporate more mantras into my regular practice as described in the index, but I’m aware that some either require correct pronunciation, are self-correcting, or does not require correct pronunciation. Is there a way to classify or organize the mantras in these groups? I’m also doing Dhyan and reciting Soham, but for now, I’d also wish to give my gratitude to other deities in the best way possible as well.

Again, thank you for your insights as always.

      Hi there
      1. specific events in childhood,
      illnesses
      prizes in school
promotions/ job change of parents which might have had a significant impact
      change in school/ residence

      2. Hinduism may have several deities but we worship only one Parabrahma.
eg you are one ‘Alice’. you see yourself as ‘Alice’. but the people around you see you as ‘Alice’ and also additionally
as a daughter, mother, wife, aunt, student, professional etc. these descriptions are not different from ‘Alice’.

similarly there is one Parameshwar but several people see this one energy in several forms, Shri Shankar, Vishnu, Surya, Indra, Parvati, Laxmi, Ganga, Himalaya, etc.

do one mantra 1000 times sincerely rather than 1000 different mantra.
as a daily practice if you think of Ishtadevata – your personal adored deity and Kuldevata – your family deity, even that much is enough.
on holidays or festival days if you have time you can do more.
but do not take on so much that it becomes a task.

soham is the easiest practice, here you are training your mind to follow the rhythm of your own breath.. it is self-love and the deepest possible connection with the self ..

Thank you for your reply. Just a few follow up:

        1. I have prepared a few times regarding these events and have been attempting to correct my birthtime. May I ask for your input regarding cross checking method below (ie what I’ve gathered from other sources online). Any correction is greatly appreciated.

E.g. A very significant event happened during meditation:
        1. open Dasha and D20 bhava chalit chart (spirituality).
        2. Align birth time so that major lord and sub lord aspect or placed in contextually accurate houses. Ie. lagna, 12th house, 7th house (aspect lagna).

        2. Thank you for the guideline provided. As far as I’m concerned, my family and lineages are brought up as Catholics – I will have to read your post on finding Ishtadevata and Kuldevata again. However, I have been drawn to Shani and doing good deeds for him to balance his fearful, change-resisting energy within myself (Gemini rashi, bordering between 8th and 9th house).

I grew up the most religious out of my siblings, next to my father, even. But deep down I grew satisfied, and the disastisfaction deepened when I see hypocrism and dissonance from the most religious individuals. So I seeked for the “occult” despite being deeply frowned upon by my parents (and possibly my Catholic ancestors). The story between Guru and Shukra applied here very much (i.e. conventional vs estoricism wisdom). I’m very happy to be able to find your blog and reignite that missing something, through Jyotish and knowledge beyond this world.

Ever since reciting Soham, I was able to established a stronger, intimate relationship with my Higher self. It was mentioned somewhere in your blog that people with prominent Ketu struggled with Ajna chakra debris: I can’t see anything despite practicing, but in return, I can feel and pick up things (people’s emotions, thoughts, dream premonitions, etc) and during Dyan I felt truly loved and seen by a Higher force.

Sorry for the long ramble. I want to show my appreciation for your knowledge and dedication in these writings and how it fits beautifully into a stranger’s journey like mine.

        Hi there

        1. With this corrected data predict an event within the next 6 months and see if it occurs.

It can be as simple as a minor illness, change in residence/job, travel etc.

If your birth date is completely unknown then it will be difficult.

But if you know it to a margin of 2hrs, ie if you are sure about the ascendant sign then it will be a bit easy to rectify.

Be sure about your birth degree nakshatra.
Then start correcting the D9 planets, here you are going to rectify till the nakshatra quarters for all the planets.

If you have your D9 correct then the charts will give significantly accurate results.

        2. Ishta devata is a personal choice. The horoscope will give a few options.

If your family has no information on the family Kuldevata then its ok, focus on your Ishta devata.

Sanatan dharma is the only step wise syllabus to the Self, ie it discusses Existence, consciousness, intelligence.
But to see and claim this all pervading Existence as one’s own Self is very scary for the normal human mind.
This deep seated fear has to be addressed and in several ways. So we have so many options, so many deities, so many paths. All the internal problems, emotional issues, logical issues, are addressed here.
There is no concept of guilt fear or force. Do at your pace as per your own wish. Your choice, your action, and the fruits of your action. It’s all your own thing. Sanatan Dharma does not advocate blind adherence. You must always test the philosophy you want to follow very rigorously before completely committing to it.
As a test sincerely follow the philosophy for 21 days. If you do not see any favourable change in yourself in these 21days then discard it.
Now what is ‘favourable change’? This is at the levels of the intellect, mind and body. The mind becomes more stable, less emotional stress, you do not feel foggy, you think clearly, you sleep better, breathing pattern improve, heath improves, blood pressure gets normal, the body feels relaxed, you wake up before sunrise, etc.

The route is from faith to trust.
We all first develop faith in a route because we read about someone else’s experience.

I write about Soham because it has 100% worked for me, i trust it. Trust/Vishwas is on the intellectual level (vijnyanmaykosh).

While reading about soham this goes in your mind, ‘Soham has worked for her, she has written so much so it could be true, and it could possibly work for me too’.
This is in the mind component (manomaykosh), it is an emotion. This is faith (Shraddha) taking root in your mind. If someone asks you why you are doing this you will say ‘it has worked for several others so I feel that it should work for me too.’ you have not yet tried it but you feel hopeful about it.

So you invest your mental energy, physical strength, time etc in Soham. It is a big thing, a big risk. You do Soham and after a few days you see some favourable changes. Now your faith deepens. There may be some days when the seems to be no change but faith has sufficiently developed so you continue. And there will be some days when the quantum of change is very significant. Thus your journey in faith gradually reaches Trust (Vishwas). Your personal experiences over time have convinced you that this works. Now you are intellectually convinced that Soham will take you to your Self. Now the changes are even faster and more significant. Now you will tell others, ‘Soham has worked for me and I know that it is useful’.

        Hi ma’am,

        1. Thank you for your guide, will follow them. I believe my birth time was rounded to the nearest 0-5 ending minute digit, so I have a bit of luck regarding the hour and date.

        2. About Soham, I experienced similar things as you described: waking up before sunrise, sleeping well, less mental fog, etc. I have a psychiatrist diagnosis so these changes were very surprising and distinctive: have never experienced these without the crutch of supplemental medications.

You mentioned somewhere that Guru gives you fuel so Shukra can burn them, leading you to Divinity. Very thankful for my Higher self, to begin life as a devoted child, and thankful to you for helping me and other people finding their way back to Higher self.

Thank you for your writing on the Badhak houses and planets. At first I was disheartened to learn about this as my badhak planet is a very strong in my chart. It’s vagormatta, repeating a mutual aspect with Mars in my Navamsa and Dasamsa charts, Guru Chandal repeats as well. Plus retrograde. It’s a lot. Leaning about this planet alone has been many hours of analysis and realizing my past mistakes and current problems. So I thank you for this information and the detailed posts about the Badhak houses/planets, I never fully understood my obstacles until I started analyzing my Guru’s and even so it’s all very difficult to comprehend sometimes.

Jyotish is dependant on the question. what does the client want?

i will give you another perhaps ‘worse’ example – if your client has birth in Aries or Libra 1-10 deg, the lagnesh and kharesh are the same.

    Hello Mam,

One more excellent article. I have a question/request; in South India people do Swayamvara Parvathi mantra and homa for marriage related issues. Can you please write an article on that? like the procedure to follow/ can a regular person chant that mantra or do we need a Pandithji etc?

    Thanks
    Chandini

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
yes, it is used for marriage.
you start a mantra on a muhurt. after doing a basic pujs.

but if you cannot calculate a muhurt, then the early morning of a Friday in bright-fortnight Shukravar Shukla paksh is suitable for all Devi mantra. generally the process is this.
you get ready, give Surya Arghya, give water to Tulsi, do pujas of household deities,
then if you have a moorti of any Devi, (generally all traditional households will have a small silver moorti of Devi Annapurna and Devi Laxmi.) do her puja sincerely. offer her keshar, kumkum, turmeric, sandalwood, sari, flowers, coconut, betel leaves, areca nut, rice grains, arti etc whatever you have at the moment with you. request her help sincerely. recite the mantra 108 times at least this first time if it is short. else 3 times is fine. then do the mantra daily morning and evening 3 times till you get what you want.

the person who wants to get married should recite it.

if you want to do a detailed one time anushtan with it then you can engage a Brahmin.

consult your family Brahmin for karmakand details if you wish.

saturn is the naisargik karak of the 12th.

    2. About Soham, I was amazed by the results like you described: waking up before sunrise, sleeping well, less foggy mind, etc.. These were very foreign concepts to me as I do have a psychiatrist diagnosis, thus am no stranger to the frustration of insomnia, waking up very late until noon/afternoon despite sleeping early, weakened mental capacity and so forth. I used to use medications as a crutch to relief these symptoms, but things have improved in a rather miraculous way.

I like to read about your own journey with the Divine. It feels right (unlike many other websites, despite so much content being put out, the ingenuine motivation never sit right with me)
You said somewhere that Guru gives you the fuel and Shukra burns the fuel, all leading to Divinity.
There’s a fuel abundance in my life already that I’m learning from you how to burn them.

    Thank you.

    Hi Tejaswini Ji,

There seems to be a slight paradox here.

For Taurus, is the Yogakarak, ‘friendly planet’ – Saturn

    This concept is fixed yet

Also for Taurus the ‘hindering House’ is 9th, therefore automatically – Saturn

This seems a bit difficult/strange to reconcile

Is it like renting a house where you’re afflicted by living there, and the Landlord isn’t very good to you…yet the very same Landlord is also your valuable friend!

    Seems like a ‘frenemy’ situation.

Not sure what to make of this.

      In short

If u have 7 planets fwd and rahu ketu retrograde.
Then you see everything with fresh eyes. Lesser preconceived notions. Lesser ability /need to retrospect. Lesser need/ ability to review life lessons. Life goes by in an exciting whirl.

If you have 7 planets fwd and rahu ketu also fwd. then a highly evolved individual soul who is highly focused on the ultimate goal.

My life has truly gone by in a haze as you described in your post on Ketu conjunct ascendant lord. I did not understand myself until I found you.

Thank you. I have a badhak Mars in 9th house and lord of moon sign and 11th house. My Mars dasha was terrible and I wondered why despite what seemed like a good placement. Now I know why. But it was also good, in the sense I was able to take some painful yet liberating decisions. So is it correct to understand that the badhak can create obstacles but they can ultimately be for the better?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
if you understand what is happening then you can turn every event in the positive direction.
if you remain emotionally linked to the things then you will not be able to make sense of what is happening.

this is the difference between Manas – mind and Buddhi – intelligence.

no event is inherently 100% ‘bad’ nor ‘good’ in itself. it is your perspective which makes it so.
      and everything is constantly changing.

several combinations contribute to a result. so never expect a relationship/ project/ person to be 100% good or bad permanently. it all depends on which pattern is active.

      eg
you meet X in 2015 in some dasha/transit and over a few months he becomes your best friend. you have good times together. a few years later in 2020 when the dasha/ transit gets over and some other planet/energy starts you stop being so close. and when another dasha/transit starts in 2023 you completely lose touch. and then possibly in 2043 when again a favourable dasha/transit will come in the future you might again reconnect.

This is from your older posts.

On a saturday/tuesday evening, I told her to sit in front of her puja ghar, face east/north, cut one strand of her hair herself and clip one nail, place both on a small piece of paper, burn everything completely and then carefully take the ashes out in a open space and release them in the wind. The intention was that the link of DNA between her and her parents should be sealed and their ill wishing should not reach her anymore.

Can this be done if the person involved isn’t connected by blood/not a family member but an acquaintance

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
it is done only in extreme cases where the blood parents are actively sending negative energy into their biological child’s life. it is the rarest event.
it snaps all the energy links permanently. including any previous positive links.

it can be done only by people who are linked biologically.

How can we, as humans, recognize the fulfillment of our karmic responsibilities in this lifetime? And does understanding or recognizing the completion of one karmic duty enable us to redirect our focus to other obligations when the timing aligns?

      Hi there
there are always signs. Shakun shastra.
(King of Gandhar Shakuni from the Mahabharat was an expert in this shastra.)
try to change your perspective you will see.
if the mind is relatively silent not chattering all the time then it is easier.

my dad started seeing charts when he was around 15yrs and stopped when he was in his mid-40s. one day my Guru himself told him to stop and he stopped. he too was told to teach all that he knew to others. and he is doing that systematically.
for me, the directions came in a series of dreams.
my both grandmothers also had indications but both did not stop. they both were too kind and could not say no to people. both suffered.
none of us have never taken money or anything from clients. Jyotish is not our ‘talent’. It is the grace of the Devata.
when we see client’s charts, at that point of time it is the purva punya or the Devata of the client which is helping him. the Daivejnya are just a medium.

some of my other relatives are now charging money or getting too involved in client’s lives. the negative side effects are clearly visible.

the apara portion of Jyotish is just like being a doctor. people who don’t want to improve their lifestyles or work on the remedy turn up at your door and expect you to magically solve their problems.
the Dr tells you to do 15mins exercise daily for a lifetime for continued good health and you dont do it.
i tell you to do 15mins pujas daily for a lifetime for continued good energy and you dont do it.
      it doesn’t work like that.

But these posts have brought me so much clarity. I kept thinking that the truth would eventually come out, but i am now realizing that they wont unless I assert and defend myself. Unrelated to this article, I recently bought a set of runes. Do you have any books/references that you recommend to help get started? There are so many on the market but some dont sound very reliable. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

      Hi there

i use the elder futhark runes very often. i use just the 24 runes. (i do not use wyrd, it is a later addition made in 1980s or so and it which spoils the energy of the set)

do think first on why do you want to learn them.
if your motivation is to get money by doing readings then any book will do.
but if you want to absorb their energy really use their power then it is a longish process.

before starting anything pray to Odin foir guidance and protection.
he is basically a form of Daityaguru Shukracharya. if he accepts your prayers then you will see signs.

first read any book which makes sense to you. focus on 10 – 15 basic keywords for each rune. keep your own notes.

(i wrote 2-3 posts on runes. wrote on Isa and Ansuz but did not feel inclined to write more)

then focus on one rune at a time. carry it around with you for a day or two and sleep with it under your pillow.
request odin and the rune to reveal itself to you. if you are meant to use the runes you will get the information you need in your dreams.
be careful when you work with them, they are all very intense packets of energy.

runes or tarot or any modality used for divination are not just topics to be read. you have to pull the energy of the runes into your astral body.

like in Jyotish, we have to do pujas for the planets, the nakshatras, for Devi Sarasvati. we have to pull these energies inside the body. we have to resonate with their energies only then do we become good Daivedjnyas.

Thank you so much for this detailed reply!

I am not doing this for money/business, but just for myself. I actually prefer that no one knows…

I was skeptical on books as there are so many on the market but I will get whatever basic guidebook from the bookstore near me and get started from there. Thank you for the procedures outlined above. I will try this

    Dear Tejaswini ji,

    Saadar Pranaam.

I am very excited about the pran pratishtha of Bhagwaan Shri Ram this month. Kindly write about the positive impact of re-establishing Shri Ram moorthi for Bhaarat and Dharma. I suspect the journey won’t be all roses though, it would be a struggle as per my intuition.

I am enjoying the topics you have written about as of late. I visited Paajaka kshetra (birth place of Shri Madhwacharya) and Udupi shri krishna temple this month. Cannot explain the peace and clarity of mind when visiting such places, just one visit energized me! I simply stood in front of Krishna and had tears of joy… couldn’t express anything except my gratitude… bowed down my head and sat down for few minutes… absorbing the energies from that place is very calming… hope you visit it once too.

    Dhanyavaad,
    Sumana
