The ‘family’ related houses in your horoscope are
the 2nd house – the actual family in which you have been born, its status in society, the wealth and power wielded by your family. Also the ways you will contribute by your own actions of hoarding and accumulating treasure. (If you are adopted or fostered or put in a boarding school or at some relative’s house or for some reason separated from your birth family you should also check out the 9th house.) Venus is the natural ruler of this house and subtly contributes to the dignity and benefits from this house, so analyse Venus, his position and power in the chart. If he is with malefics/benefics, if placed in a difficult house, the planets aspecting/conjoint him, is he retrograde/ combust etc.
the 3rd house – the siblings, brothers/sisters and the cousins in general. Also your boldness in conducting yourself in these affairs of the the extended family. This is a function of Mercury in the case of siblings, he is also the natural ruler of the 3rd house of the zodiac. And Mars in the case of specifically brothers.
the 4th house – the mother, everything to do with your emotional comforts and security in all ways. The Moon is the agent of the mother so do analyse his placement and position. If he is placed in the dushamstan i.e. 6th, 8th, 12th. Or with malefics, natural or temporary. Also if he is debilitated or eclipsed or in a Gandant. I have seen cases where Moon was placed badly and the children suffering quite severely because of the mother.
the 5th house – the children, of the DNA or of the soul, and all the ways you pass on your creativity. The natural ruler of this house is the Sun so check out his power to give results in the horoscope. Do you have the divine intelligence and inspiration to carry on your legacy by producing offspring?
the 7th house – the husband or wife, your Dharm-pati or Dharm-patni. This is marriage the Vivah Sanskar, and in Vedic context of Jyotish requires a man and a woman. This directly leads to production of children of your DNA. In the case of a person’s union with the spiritual self, this house will lead to the production of the children of the soul. The natural planets connected to this house are Mars, Venus and Jupiter.
the 9th house – the ancestors, the father-like figures in your life who support and guide you in your life. The real teacher/Guru who makes you dwij/twice-born. This is the domain of Jupiter.
the 10th house – the father and everything to do with this one person in your life. There have been cases where a bad father has caused trauma to his children. Also the Sun is naturally linked to this house. However the natural owner of this house is Saturn thus influences this house wherever he may be placed.
These are the closest relations who make up your family. Your personal karma is linked to your heredity, to all the ancestors, so if your birth time is absolutely precise, the divisional chart 12 will give you your answers. Analyse the position of the mother and the father from the D-12 chart to know about the specific karma linked to your mother’s and father’s family. If you are inclined, you can go in-depth using the D-40 for the mother’s family and the D-45 for the precise karma linked to the father’s side of the family. Your personal individual karma is seen from D-60.
First analyse is 9th house, the house of foundations or Bhagya/fortune. Now the 1st house is the 5th house counted from the 9th, thus your manifested physical body, life and social standing etc is an expression of the actions/inspiration/intelligence of the agents of the 9th house. Your ancestors/pitr, you carry their genes, their culture, their property/assets, their name in the society etc. If there are problems in the 9th house they will cause serious impacts on your entire existence. I have written on how to completely analyse a house in your horoscope earlier so try it with the 9th house of the chart.
The Dharma trikon is mainly affected so analyse your ascendant/1st house then your 5th house. Your existence is derived from your ancestors and your children are derived from you and then you become an ancestor to your children, it is cyclic.
Most of these karmic effects relate to the ‘fortune’, marriage and children. These include susceptibility to magic, nightmares, possession by spirits. Then late marriages or multiple marriages, divorces, impotency. Further abortions, miscarriages, disabled children, death of young children, no sons. Mental problems, suicides, diseases with no cures, addictions etc. Children getting married to unsuitable men/women, running away, or getting widowed in young age, or having multiple affairs, falling into prostitution, getting involved in ‘moral crimes’ which go against the conscience. Legal issues and complications in courts. Fights and ill-will within the family members etc.
If you see any family with such events, the charts of the people will show some common points. Significantly strong malefics in the 9th, 1st or 5th houses. The most potent combination is Rahu/Ketu in these houses with some other malefic force giving them direction. Then more malefic influences on the other houses depending on which problems they are going through. e.g. If someone is going through a karmic linked disease, the 8th house will be further affected. If he has lost property because of litigations, the 4th and 7th will be further damaged. If he is not getting a stable income and loss of status in profession/society is the 10th house etc.
Most of these issues are caused due to ‘family curses’, or more appropriately some karma which was supposed to be done by or for the ancestor which is pending. Most commonly it is that funeral rites were not performed thus the soul is trapped on earth. This can be truly disastrous, sometimes ancient houses are haunted. Or some ancestor did some terrible thing/negative karma for which the entire generation is suffering. Maybe murdered someone, I have seen this the husband killed the wife a few generations ago and there were problems for the present generation. Or something which was due but was not repaid by some ancestor.
But this is not the whole story.
Why should you suffer because of some mistake your ancestor did? In fact you dont! You are suffering because of your own Karma, you created some negative karma like, aborting a child, not performing funeral rites for someone you were required to, not repaying things which you should have, committed suicide, raped someone, prostituted someone, produced children and then did not acknowledge them, abandoning your parents or wife/husband, or someone dependant on you, misused your knowledge to harm someone, even trapped spirits to use them against their will, in short did something so deep, so much against your Dharm, that in this life you have sealed off the gentler means of balancing karma.
Your own conscience/Antaratma judged you and you are now being made to go through the same thing yourself. When you have endured a significant portion of the karma, you will be given the chance to balance off the remaining through pujas/mantra/charity etc the energy route.
The 9th house not only represents the ancestors but it is all that you are going to receive in your current life because of the actions from your past lives, good bad or indifferent.

This is in response to this comment I received, “Dear astrologer-by-default,
I love reading your posts and there’s so much to learn! Can you write about ancestral trauma and parental wounds…how they influence our life and ways to heal them? Thanks in advance.”
