Dangerous trigger Partial Solar eclipse 30 Apr 2022

A quick post.

We will be experiencing the first eclipse of this year on 30th April 2022. It will be visible only in some parts of South America, Antarctica, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The effect of the eclipse is generally limited to areas where it is visible. For the rest of the world it has negligible effects. But this time it will be affecting the oceans so will have significant effect on the weather patterns generated from here. Also considering the current precarious situation of the world, analysing the eclipse will be helpful. The eclipse duration is for about 4hrs so its effects will fade after about 4yrs.

  • First location to see the partial eclipse start – 30 Apr, 18:45 UTC
  • Maximum Eclipse – 30 Apr, 20:41
  • Last location to see the partial eclipse end – 30 Apr, 22:37 UTC
  • (This map is from timeanddate.com)

Let’s look at the chart drawn for the maximum eclipse point time. There are some interesting combinations here which should be analysed. I am just outlining the basic theme, pointing out the combinations, students of Jyotish can fill in the details with their own analysis.

Primarily the eclipse is being caused by Rahu in Aries. He is in the Krutika nakshatra, a fiery lunar mansion ruled by the deity Agni and linked to the Sun. It is a solar eclipse so is obviously it is occurring during an Amavasya. Both Sun and Moon are in Bharani nakshatra. These three graha are strongly influenced by Saturn via his 3rd aspect. The additional aspects of the planets, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are more effective than their regular 7th aspect. Saturn aspecting the Sun and the Moon is a severe constriction on everyone of us. But far more dangerous is Rahu aspected by Saturn, this is called Shapit dosh (post here) and has the capacity to cause pain, struggle and sorrow on both the objective and subjective levels.

Mercury in Taurus is not involved in the eclipse energy as such, but he has broken the hemming of the Kaal sarpa. This energy was active intermittently since Dec 2021 and it getting broken is a positive.

Ketu in Libra – post on the Rahu Ketu transit into Aries Libra here.

Saturn and Mars in Aquarius – Saturn has just entered Aquarius on 29th and is now in a planetary war with Mars. Obviously Saturn has lost the Graha yuddha at the moment and will be required to follow Mars in most matters. He is even more uncomfortable as Aquarius is his own sign and he is being constrained by Mars from acting as he wishes. Saturn with Mars is a very dangerous combination capable of spoiling each others results and the significations of the house they occupy (post here). And he is aspecting Rahu. As per our texts and what has been seen in the past, whenever Saturn, Mars and Rahu get together in some way or the other, there is a heavy loss of human life all over.

Venus and Jupiter are in Pisces and they are also engaged in a fierce graha yuddha because they are on the same degree! But Jupiter is very slightly ahead so has won for the moment. Both are Gurus but engage in a philosophical sort of enmity so both so close together are extremely uncomfortable. Added to the fact that Pisces belongs to Jupiter and it is the sign of exaltation for Venus. Both are here, want to relax, get expansive, at home etc but are constrained by the other’s presence. So both are not going to give very happy results at this time. Venus and Jupiter otherwise also when together give subtly traumatic results (post here). The Devguru and the Daityaguru are the two benevolent planets who are ready to help us even in the direst of circumstances, but here they are both caught in a paap-kartari yog with double strength natural malefics hemming them in.

Eclipses act as trigger points as the subjective forces of Rahu and Ketu obscure the internal divinity Sun or the nourishing divinity Moon. This event releases unbalanced karma on significant levels. After an eclipse some of us will experience unexpected losses and some get some unexpected gains depending on the individual charts.

As a result of this partial solar eclipse, we can expect misdirected fiery energy at all levels. The military, police and other enforcement agencies will be ruthless and relentless about their objectives. Invasions which are already underway will intensify. Invasions which were being planned will be put into motion. Diplomacy, rest, socialising, friendship etc will be on the backseat. Civil unrest, violence and terrorist activity will see an increase. These will be put down equally firmly. Tempers will be high and anger will be misdirected.

There will be changes in the weather patterns. It will get windy now so expect cyclones in coastal areas, these will bring rain, flooding and possible destruction. And the heavy winds inside the land masses will be hot and dry, this may lead to fires and heat related accidents. Volcanic activity or earthquakes are also possible. Hills will see storms and rains which may cause floods in the downstream or plains.

Global economy will remain shaky. We are in a transition period now, the current system is changing and dramatically so, Saturn in Aquarius is ensuring this. It will take a decade or so to settle, meanwhile, be ready for pain as such transitions are never easy. This eclipse will be a trigger for some smaller nations to experience severe issues and seek help from others, this can lead to their losing their economic sovereignty. And the Ukraine Russia war is not going to stop so soon, it will continue and lead to economic instability in Europe and USA. Russia will remain in a better shape.

On the health front, COVID 19 is on the wane, however there will be increase in cases in the next few months. People will generally fall ill but recover with regular medicines. This will be serious only for those who have not taken adequate steps for improving their immunity or those who remain careless about their health. Those who have a combination of Rahu, Mars and Saturn in their birth charts or are near their allotted longevity should avoid taking unnecessary risks with their lives. Those who are in Mahadasha or Antardashas of any of these three graha should also exercise due caution.

Some will experience an intense desire to get rid of all bindings, naturally there will be physical deaths too. Overall the combinations point to cruelty and cold bloodedness. On the personal level, be careful while driving and avoid risky endeavours as minor to major injuries are possible.

Not all nations will be affected by this eclipse. Only those who will experience the eclipse and the people living there will see the full effects of the eclipse. But because the energies are so severe, every nation will feel the effects to some extent. Every nation has a ‘birth chart’, ie the chart drawn at the time/date linked to some significant event considered to be the formation of the nation and the place will be the national capital. So those nations who have Aries or Libra as ascendants will see some disruptive activity triggered by this eclipse. Also for all nations whichever house Aquarius falls in will see dangerous developments during this time.

For our Bharat, we will see some extreme weather and natural disasters but more troubling will be the secret enemies within who will cause problems. Our nation has Taurus ascendant and Moon in Cancer. Saturn entering the 8th from Cancer, ie ashtam Shani and this eclipse trigger within a day of each other can bring hidden enemies to the forefront. We all follow the news and the present unfolding events, so it should not come as a surprise if internal unrest, riots and political upheavals increase in certain states. Our borders might see some action. COVID 19 will be seen again in some states but mostly people should recover. I am counting on Saturn as yogkarak for Taurus ascendant to bring some positivity after the initial turbulence.

If you live in a location where this eclipse is visible then you can make use of the energies to give a boost to your spiritual practice. It is advisable to perform some sadhana, ie Dhyan, or read some spiritual book, eg Bhagwat Gita, Upanishads etc or recite a mantra of your choice, eg Mahamrutyunjai mantra during the duration of the eclipse.

As always, the energy remedy for every problem in life on the energy front, is either Mantra or Daan. You reinforce your energy by doing Mantra or give away the unbalanced energy by doing Daan.

I have written several posts on eclipses and how to analyse their effects in birth and transit charts. (refer the index page for more posts).

Retrograde and combust planets are unfair?

This was a question I got today and I felt happy that someone was thinking out of the box, found it quite cute too. At the past few months, several planets went through retrograde and combust phases. It started with Jupiter going retrograde in April, followed by Saturn retrograde. Then we had Mars, Venus and Mercury going combust and retrograde. A few eclipses in the mix, all of this goes on unvaryingly, year after year.

The 5 planets (Tara graha), Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are subjected to periodic apparent changes in direction i.e. retrograde motion. They also move in different speeds and then there are 8 different types of motions which these 5 get into. The results are affected by the speed of motion. Then these five also participate in something called ‘planetary war’ or graha yuddha. The winner planet dominates the others. They get ‘combust’ if they get close to the Sun which leads to a reduction in their power to give results. So predicting their results needs some looking into.

The luminaries, the Sun and the Moon have constant speeds, they never get retrograde, they don’t get into planetary wars. Moon gets ‘combust’ but then it is more properly the Amavasya, the no-moon bursting with energy and thankfully for just a day a month, you can use it if you know how. Both get eclipsed if they interact with Rahu/Ketu, but that is just for a few hours. These few hours are also full of useable energies, so can’t be completely negative.

The Rahu and Ketu are astral shadow forces, Chhaya graha. These are mathematical calculations and not really a part of our manifested reality. They are permanently retrograde, very rarely the true nodes are direct, which can give interesting results. They do not rule signs or anything so cannot be anyone’s ascendant or anything. Rahu and Ketu are the flow of your ‘desire for experience’. We will ignore them just for this post.

Try to sense your chakras

The 5 Tara Graha. If your ascendant lord is one of the 5 planets, Mercury, Venus Mars, Jupiter or Saturn and if they are combust/ retrograde/ or party to a graha yuddha, at your birth then you will carry these energies with you for your current life-time.

A small recap, the ruler of your ascendant sign /first house is the most important planet in your life. The ascendant lord needs to be analysed first in your birth chart to get an idea of how your life is going to unfold. If this planet is placed well, your life is going to unfold nicely. But if this planet is placed in the dushamsthan, or conjunct/ aspected by malefic planets or otherwise not in a position to give auspicious results, you will suffer ill-health, misfortune, challenges, adversity etc. This planet determines

  • your physical body,
  • your environment and
  • how you fit in into your environment.

If you were born with the ascendant lord,

Combust – you can face health problems, especially heat related diseases. Struggles in life are possible as you are overshadowed by males, father figures, seniors etc around you. Often might have to work hard for small gains. The entire horoscope can suffer as the main planet himself is weak and lacks power to give his results. Combustion means Sun is also with him. Sun is a natural malefic so, as it is, going to give inauspicious results. Closer the combustion more severe the results. The only saving grace here would be if the Sun is a functional benefic for the chart, in which case there would be some good results. Or if the Moon is well placed so that the personality remains emotionally stable so as to go through life in a more adjusted way.

Retrograde – if the ascendent is retrograde in the birth chart, then he indicates a rough road for the person. There would be delays, instability, repetitions, blocks, a repressed personality, unable to express himself, often struggling against the odds and heavy karmic issues. If you can concentrate on your spiritual side you can make use of this choice you have made at your birth. The personality goes through the same issues again and again and it can get frustrating. But there is a deep karmic lesson involved so try to be patient and start some spiritual practice. A well-placed Moon as usual is a big asset here too.

Graha yuddha – The winner in a planetary war is always stronger and gives good results as per his placement, lordship, position etc. The aspects of life controlled by this planet will prosper. So if your ascendant planet has won the planetary war, then it is a good thing. All the aspects of life indicated by the other planets who have lost the graha yuddha are going to be in your general control. However if he is the absolute loser here, then it can indicate a few issues in life. If he has lost to a malefic planet the effect will be even more severe. The issues indicated by the planets who have won will have the potential to overpower the personality. If the ascendant lord is anyway affected and loses his potential to give auspicious results, the entire personality can suffer. A benefic Moon is a good thing here too.

Out of the 9 graha of astrology, only 7 can be ascendant lords as they own the signs. So you can have Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Moon and the Sun as your ascendant lords. The two luminaries of astrology don’t get into all this retrograde and stuff. So you might think that its rather unfair on the other 5 planets and we all who have them as our ascendant lords. But it is not so, Cancer and Leo as ascendants would be in my opinion the most challenging ascendant placements. Cancer is one step more challenging than Leo.

Combust and caizimi planets

Having the luminaries are your ascendant lord ie being born with Cancer or Leo as your rising sign means that you have chosen the following challenges, these are just some which come to my mind, the rest you can work out for yourself.

  • The fastest time taken by a graha to change signs is Moon at 2.25days per sign. Sun follows closely at an unvarying 1month per sign. The aspects of life in direct focus change quite fast. (Compare Saturn at 2.5 yrs per sign.)
  • The ascendant return is highly predictable at every month for the Moon and every year for the Sun. At every ascendant return your personality, your environment and how these two interact undergoes a sudden change. (Compare Saturn return takes approx 27.5yrs)
  • These two do not go retrograde nor get into any of the 8 types of movements. Just one unvarying speed and direction. So life moves very fast, there are no review points in-built in the system. This is in my opinion the biggest drawback. Life moves very fast for Cancer ascendant people, rate of change is high. (Compare Saturn who goes through all the 8 types of movements, giving time and opportunities for the life lessons to be reviewed, redone and understood in its entirety.)
  • Now compare them to their mirror, the missing piece in their life, the one they will love, the 7th house, Capricorn/ Aquarius with Saturn ascendant! The slowest coupled with the fastest. If you have one of these 4 signs as your ascendants analyse yourself dispassionately or if you know a Cancer or Leo ascendant person in your life do study him.
  • Now Sun and Moon are respectively the self-ego and the astral-self. And they are put in charge of building the physical self/ environment. There is some existential discomfort here, observe these individuals to know what I mean.

So whatever your ascendant and lord is rest assured that this was the best possible option. All have their own challenges and their own highlights. No one is lesser or better than the other. And your higher self chose this before you were born. Trust yourself and walk your path, things are always working for the best!

Retrograde and combust planets are unfair?

Planetary war, Graha Yuddha

Planetary war is a peculiar astronomical condition where several planets are together in one sign at once. In terms of speed, the Moon is the fastest graha, next is Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Rahu/Ketu and then Saturn which is the slowest. And then the fast-moving ones catch up to the slower planets and the distance between the two becomes less than one degree, this is Graha Yuddha. This peculiar conjunction affects the powers of the planet who has the lesser degrees, it is considered to have lost the war! The Sun, Moon, Rahu and Ketu do not involve themselves in such fights. Only the five, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn are involved in Graha Yuddha.

The logic behind this is quite simple. A planet is considered to give more results, the deeper he advances into a sign. e.g. A Jupiter which is placed at 4 deg in Leo and a Mercury placed at 5 deg Leo. In this case, Mercury is more capable of giving results related to Leo than Jupiter based on their degree placement in the sign. And in terms of war, Mercury is the the victor.

Planetary war, Graha Yuddha

This ‘planetary war’ concept is not very important in analysing birth horoscopes but is applicable in Prasna, in analysing the effects of transiting planets and in mundane astrology. There are four types of planetary war,

  1. Occultation – In this case the two planets have the same direction of movement and the lie on the same degree. And the planet nearer to the earth completely obstructs the one who is farther away. (Chhadan or Bhaed)
    • can cause failure of rains, discord among prominent people, clashes between nations,
  2. Apasavya – This is occultation but when one of the planets is moving in a forward motion and the other in a retrograde motion.
    • Internal flights among the ruling class
  3. Obstruction – In this case the planetary spheres touch each other but do not overlap. Just their edges touch. (Ullekh or Rodh)
    • can cause confusions in government, internal unrest, civil war, famines,
  4. Anshu-mardana – This is when the planets are 1-5 deg from each other and their energies/rays clash with each other.
    • disease and poverty can spread among the populations.

In the present time, in June/July, a planetary war will occur in Gemini and then in Cancer as Mars, Mercury and Venus are going to move together, in forward and also retrograde motions. During this period they will also be with Rahu while in Gemini. They will also accompany the Sun and occasionally go combust. The present times are highly confused with retrograde Saturn and Ketu in Sagittarius and a retrograde Jupiter in Scorpio.

This confusion in the Gemini – Sagittarius axis will create war like situations in the world, with religion – fueled aggression. When it hits the Cancer – Capricorn axis it will cause problems for homeland security and social issues which will affect large sections of the society.

In analysing transits, also remember that the planet which has advanced more into the sign dominates, so in June you have Mars in Gemini leading the Sun, Mercury and Rahu. Two fiery planets, Sun, Mars and one airy, Rahu with the impressionable adolescent Mercury. As Mars dominates all these, summers have been intense, forests have been on fire, people have been very passionate about causes (Indian elections!), rains are late, people will have been suffering heat-related health issues etc. The situation will marginally improve as Mercury overtakes Mars and till he exits Gemini. And this is all happening with Rahu, the agent of desire, in Gemini aspected by the agent of constriction, i.e Saturn from Sagittarius.

People with ascendants or birth moon sign, Gemini, Sagittarius and to some extent Virgo are badly affected, ‘heat’ in all its possible forms will be after them. Aries and Scorpio are better off as Mars is the winner of the Graha yuddha. Taurus should take care especially, of the health and avoid accidents while driving, might be required to live away from home for some time. Cancer is not in a very favourable position either. Pisces will feel the heat and body/mind fatigue. For the rest of the signs it is average.

To get more personal, look into your birth-chart and check out what the Gemini-Sagittarius means to you, which houses it falls in. Expect problems from this axis and its keywords.

The present times till September 2019, when Saturn will turn forward again, are very happening, with events moving very fast. Do keep notes and keep track of what is happening, it is going to be quite educational. But in your personal lives try to keep calm and work through situations as they present themselves. It is the ideal time to study the effects of transits, retrogrades, planetary war, combustion etc as so many planets are involved.
