Cow and Sanatan Dharma

Cow and Sanatan Dharma

Last Updated on August 12, 2024 by Tejaswini

Cattle were always considered precious, and even in the material sense. Human civilisation has been founded on the strength of these ancient bulls and cows.

Sanatan Dharma has elevated the desi bull and cow to the level of a deity. If you go to our genuine temples and especially in Dakshin Bharat, you will see living desi cows, calves and bulls being formally worshipped. Kamdhenu is a Devi and worshipped as a divine cow who emerged from the Samudra manthan. Similarly the bulls are worshipped as Maharaj Nandi who is depicted as the vahan of Bhagwan Shankar. An annual festival ‘Pola’ is celebrated where every household worships the bulls it owns. And on Go-vatsa dvadashi (Ashwin krishna paksha) cows and calves are worshipped.

Feeding desi cows, bulls or calf brings auspicious merit. And injuring or killing a desi bull, cow or a calf generates highly negative karma. ‘Desi cattle’ are the breeds indigenous to Bharat, the animals have a large hump, prominent neck folds, their skin is shiny, horns are large and beautiful etc. (Western breeds and half breed animals deserve protection as they are precious living beings but their inherent energies are lower than the desi breeds and not on the level of the deities.)

In Sanskrit, the word ‘Go’ गो generally is understood to mean cattle. Eg ‘Go Mata’ is understood to be a female cow who we adore as a mother. But Devbhasha Samskrutam is a palimpsest, there are layers and layers of meanings which depend on your ability to understand. Eg Ashva can mean a horse, Agni dev, Surya dev etc and the energies of these are also interconnected. So let’s see what the word ‘Go’ गो is really all about.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

Go is the sky, ie the Akash mahabhoot, the conscious space which encloses everything and which can never be enclosed itself. In the Upanishads/ Tantra the Akash is mentioned several times as the nearest example indicating towards the Parabrahma.

Go is the voice, the energy of speech. It is the power of sound, ie the first perceptible creation itself. Thus Go also indicates the Vayu mahabhoot.

Go means the suns, stars and the constellations which are seen in the skies. And Go is also the internal Sun, the Hiranyapurush within, the destination of all spiritual seekers. Thus Go is also used to refer to the Agni mahabhoot.

Go is water, the Apah mahabhoot, the energy of the Jal tattva. And life just like flowing water a non stop flow of experience. The Sanskrit word ’Jivan’, which means ‘life’ also means water in Sanskrit.

Go is the body, the skin, the flesh, ie the manifested material, the stability of the earth itself. Thus Go is the Pruthvi mahabhoot.

Go is the thunderbolt weapon, the Vajra which Devraj Indra holds in his hands. Indra Dev is the individual soul, the jivatma itself. The esoteric meaning of the lightning flash of the Vajra is the rapid rise of the Kundalini when it is set to reach its final destination. The words Go and Vajra are also used for a diamond.

Go is the rays of light which emerge from the Sun. These are the seven main Sun rays, which represent the 7 chakras from Sahasrar to Muladhar, these are Go. But Go is also used to indicate a specific solar special ray called ‘Sushumna’. And as you know, the energy of self-identification – Kundalini has to find its way through a subtle nadi named ‘Sushumna’ in order to realise itself as the Eternal.

Go is also used to mean a bow string. The archer, the bow, the bow string and the target is an often used image for the the individual soul/ jivatma, chakras in the body, the mantra and the Eternal. The entire Bhagwat Gita of Bhagwan Krishna has this imagery as its foundation. You project yourself towards the target using the power of the mantra over the chakras.

Go is the eye. In the sense of the two physical eyes, it is Go who helps you experience this creation. And in the esoteric sense, the third eye, if developed correctly can turn you and me into a Seer, ie affirm Existence as the only non dual Reality.

Go refers to the heavens, the realm of the celestial beings, ie Svarga.

Go is one of the 9 divisions/ paths/ veethi of the ecliptic. And one of the quadrants of the compass. Thus in the larger sense Go represents the dimensions, ie the expanse of space.

Go is used in the context of a dwelling, a house in the sense of a shelter.

Go is also milk. And ‘milk’ in the Vedic language indicates the Mind/Manas. The Manas is purified of the dross so that finally it becomes eligible to receive the Atmajnyan, self realisation and remain immersed in it.

Go is Devi Sarasvati. She is the deity of speech and the deity of the foremost mantra of Sanatan Dharma, ie the Gayatri mantra. Go means the mother, the energy which manifests this creation from the unmanifested mass of energy. Go is also used as a name for Devi Parvati

Go is the esoteric name of the number 1 and also for the number 9. It is also used for the number one billion.

Go has hundreds of meanings, literal, esoteric, secret. It has a significant place in the Ved/ Nigam and the Tantra/ Agam. But even these few literal meanings of this word from the basic Sanskrit dictionaries are enough to give a glimpse of the tremendous power that the Go is connected to.

So when you sincerely worship the animal ‘Go’ गो you are also simultaneously invoking all fundamental energies of the ‘Go’ within you. If you hurt or kill a cow, ie do Go hatya you damage yourself on these deepest energy levels. And it will take lifetimes to repair the damage on the energy levels and these meanings of the ‘Go’ will not be accessible to you for a very long time.

Sanatan Dharma does not have any guilt and fear inducing concepts, there is no ‘wrath of god’ or ‘punishments from god’ here. You are free decide your route and your own actions are enough to make you experience ‘heaven’ or ‘hell’ right here on earth. Dharma in its broadest sense means accepting that what happens to us is a result of our own actions. Dharma means independence from others and dependence only on the self.

Sanatan Dharma is not a religion, it is a step wise syllabus incorporated in a lifestyle. Our daily activities are designed to make the maximum use of the energies swirling around us. So do read more about Sanatan Dharma, understand these expansive concepts and try to follow a Dharmic lifestyle as much as you can. And the next time you see a desi cow, bull or calf do acknowledge the ‘Go’ whose living embodiment it is.

    Hi,

What do you think about fasting as an astrological remedy?

there is a calm, intelligent and pure energy in Gau Mata which is very evident to whoever gets to spend time with them. I guess it’s the energy that comes from always giving and being the conduit for providing nourishment / sustenance and being a protector.

its a real shame that the next generation does not get time to engage closely with the things that were easily accessible before – because of more urbanization / more distractions in social media and the general influence of all the new culture that they are being exposed. Perhaps it was easier before with less distractions and having a slower pace of life. Not sure what the solution might be here but there is a need for a solution.

Tejasvini Ji, any thoughts on how to stop the monkey mind from jumping around? Even for grown ups, there are a 1000 distractions – social media glamorizes the hedonistic lifestyle – all the places that one can go to, all the foods one can eat and drink, all the celebrities one can gossip about. All the flashy things that surround us and entice.

The obvious one is for everyone to take personal responsibility and work for their lives and goals but in my experience people get easily distracted because our brains are built that way ( to get the dopamine hit ).

Since you are so more experienced, I am curious if you can share some thoughts on how one can be less enticed by the ever-increasing distractions around us. Any practical tips or anything else that you might share?

    Thank you.

      Hi there
i have written about this somewhere.

Do Soham with the breath. The Breath and the Mind state are connected.
      channelise mantra + breath
If you feel the mind jumping around and want to leash it in do 2 mins of Soham.

Hi, thank you for your post. Forever grateful for your knowledge.

I hope to hear your input on this question: what do you think of ambitions i.e. being professional ambitious? Especially in this modern world.

When my Rahu dasha ended and Jupiter dasha began, I accumulated a lot of gain and hurt from being ambitious. I thought of getting a prestigious education and career to payback for my parents’ hardwork, but I think this avenue has backfired on me except material level, as it hasn’t mixed well with spiritual side.

Hope to hear your take on this. Thank you.

      Hi there
You should definitely strive for material gains, money, prestige etc. the trick is to be reasonable about things.
And not chase after unreasonable things.
      ’reasonable’ is your own definition.
Decide on what kind of life would satisfy your mind. also does this suit your family, culture, traditions? Would your parents, grandparents approve of this?
Then think on how much you need to earn to support this lifestyle.

I wrote on Satvik rajasic and tamasic Nidhi /gains somewhere. Use the index/search bar.

For spiritual gains – Whatever you do, actions/ thoughts etc, offer them to your adored deity. Tell your deity that you are doing this out of your love for him. If you can do that in your mind sincerely and without hesitation, spiritual gains are assured.

    Hi Tejaswini Ji,

I had a normal question but somehow came across your earlier writings through these comments:

    https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2023/09/08/vedant-a-summary/

This is as they say Next Level!

Although being a summary it’s probably the first small step to next level.

In order to precipitate more wisdom from you as well as to put in some aspect of ‘clash’ since we can often refine our understanding this way.

On your post just linked to the entire field seems – Vedant.

I also consider the Upanishads as the fountainhead of our Dharma.

Yet did not people associate Advaita Vedanta with an obsession with ‘maya’, which was the main explanation of the relative existence.

And that glorious as it is, it was the best most irrefutable system that one could convey to others. And many consider it the most sophisticated of Vedanta philosophies.

I’d heard that knowing yourself as the ‘I Am’ was actually a development of the highest Tantra philosophies. Where the Bindu understanding was reach reached.

And also after the intellectual debate was all done, didn’t Adi Shankacharya actually compose divine hymns to Devi?

      Hi there
Vedant and sookshma Tantra is the same.
Just tht the style of presentation is superficially different. Essentially it is the exactly the same.
I wrote several posts on this.
Use the index or search bar.

    Dear Tejaswini Ma’m,

Huge Gratitude to you for this post and the earlier ones. They are very assuring and enlightening…. though it takes a re-reading for me to understand them.
Connected to this posts and some recent ones, I have some queries :

    1. Between “Shree Ganeshaya Namah” and “Om Gang Ganapataye Namah”, which mantra is stronger and gives faster vighna nasha?

    2. Regarding Badhakesh, Venus is yogakarak as well as badhakesh for Aquarius ascendant. Similarly if Saturn (Asc Lord) is 7th or 4th from Venus, he becomes an aide to Venus. In such as scenario, would both these planets play both the blessings-giver as well as castigators for the person ?

    3. In answer to one of the earlier queries you have mentioned the lower manifestation of ascendant based Rahu in the chart of Bharat, through our behaviours. However, the charts of countries / land tracts at present are based on the date and time of their liberation from colonisation or reunification or annexation. In such scenario, do the energies of the country and its masses change and thus their future goes up or down when these events happen? Also , how should we leverage this Rahu in the ascendant to our advantage given that it may be blessing considering Rahu rules Kali Yuga ?

    4. As Rahu is the danava and Shukracharya his Guru, would shukra sadhana (mentioned by you in one of the answers) help to channelise/guide him during Rahu mahadasha?

    5. If Rahu is in 10th and has completely materialistic connotations – i.e sign, yuti, aspects -and Rahu MD starts in late fifties, what would this bring from the age perspective ? He will mislead the person to dazzling materialistic temptations even at that age and then pull down at the end of life? Or lead him to prosperity towards the end ?

I thank you again for the sharing your wealth of wisdom with us in these turbulent times.
Wishing you and all your dear ones a wonderful, healthy , happy and shubha Year 2024 !

      Hi there

      1. If done sincerely both will give the result you intend.

      2. There will b subtle obstacles

      3. Yes.
Rahu – lower energy is material
His higher energy helps in attaining moksh

      4. Yes

      5. Depends on the soul evolution level he can grant spiritual and/ or material success even in the 50s.

    Namaste Madam,

Wish you and your family a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Beautiful Post. Thankyou so much .🙏🙏🙏

Requesting your help to clarify following question with respect to remedy .

My understanding is that we need to perform remedy for weak grahas .

Malefic planets in konas — Remedies(fasting/daana/mantra) need to be done for malefic planets
Benefic Planets in Dushtana– Remedies((fasting/daana/mantra) need to be done for benefic planets

I tried checking various parameters in analysing strength of planet ( Shadbala, IshtaPhala, dwadasa Vargeeya Phala) but it is so confusing to decide which planet remedy needs to be done.

for ex : Moon shadbala may be strong but Dwadasa Vargeeya Bala /Ishta Phala is less.
How do we ensure we are doing remedy for right graha? Which ‘Bala’ should we consider for doing the remedy?

    Regards,
    Sirisha
