The 11th is the house of gains, it is called the Labh-sthan, it is generally considered to be a positive house. But just like the 3rd house, it has a dark side. In your practice you will see several charts where the 11th house is the real source of unhappiness. And these issues are unsolvable because they do not register as problems.
The houses in the chart are given several names, eg – Kendra, Kona, Upchaya, Dusham, Trishadaya, Marak, Panphara, Apoklima, Dvidvadasha etc. There are the four types of trikons, Dharma, Arth, Kama, Moksh. There are these several such terms in Jyotish. A house/ bhava will fall into several of these categories, so understanding what these concepts is necessary for better analysis of the chart.

The 11th house has several descriptions – it is a part of the Kama trikon, a upchay house, a trishaday house, a badhak for certain ascendants etc.
Upchay means that the results of that house become more understandable as we grow older. The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th are उपचय houses, generally analysed for confirming material successes. Whatever results these houses promise, they expand with time.
- If the house is auspicious then these results are useful. Eg you may have a knack for investing in long term projects which might seem hopeless at first but later give very good returns.
- But if these are afflicted, then due to the upchay effect, the issues they generate might seem silly in the initial stages but will become unsolvable with time. eg. you and your older brother do not get along as children, this is dismissed as ‘sibling rivalry’ but later in life the older brother actively cheats the younger sibling in the matters of family/ ancestral properties.
Kama trikon – The 11th being a part of the kama trikon, is linked to all the things you desire, intend and are willing to act for. Generally for regular people, it represents a desire for even more money, recognition, praise, an enhanced public presence, a greater than life self image, a desire for followers, etc. 99% of these desires can be summarised in one word ‘greed’. Wanting a desire which has been fulfilled to continue endlessly. The 11th shows how easily and strongly you wish to be entangled in the illusions of this material world. The 3rd is your capacity to take bigger and bolder steps/ risks to achieve your material desires. And the 7th is your desire for partnerships. A strong 11th entangles you into several karmic bindings with the very many people who are of the same mindset as yours. You meet several people who think like you and as you intentionally interact with them, you create even more karma for the future. And if you do not get the admiration you expect, chances are you will engage in even risker acts or dangerous partnerships which will eventually harm. (You will find such patterns in the charts of the ‘reel generation’ which is addicted to ‘likes’.)
Badhak house – The 11th is the badhak house for ‘in motion’/ Chara sign ascendants – Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. Keywords of the 11th will hinder these people. Observe people with these ascendants in your sample collection, especially their interactions with their friends/ older siblings. These people are always positive about their friends/siblings, they offer their help/ resources/time, they go out of their way, hoping for better interactions with their siblings etc. But they are continually repressed in these relationships which eventually end badly for them. This is because they do not register the red flags, they cannot believe that their dear friends/ siblings can behave so badly with them. They have high expectations from these 11th house people which eventually ends in breakups. These people should avoid joint activities/ projects/ investments/ financial dealings etc with their friends/ older siblings, there is a high chance of being cheated. Best is to avoid depending on the people represented by the badhak sthans in your chart. Also the activities represented by the badhak sthan are not auspicious in the long run. Being pragmatic and practical in your dealings with these will save you from heartbreak later.

Trishaday houses create unsolvable problems in life. These problems creep into your life, silently, insidiously. Thus it takes quite a long time to realise what has happened. And also, by this time, these issues have gone in so deep that it is not possible to solve them. You have to either learn to live with them or cut your losses by decisively breaking off with these issues. Either way it can be traumatic. There are three trishadaya houses – 3rd, 6th and the 11th. Among these, the 11th is the worst, followed by the 6th and then the 3rd. The owners of these houses and also the planets placed in these should be evaluated for their capacity to cause this sort of creeping trouble.
I have written several posts on the Dushamsthan the 6th 8th and 12th (index page). The three houses of turmoil, 6th 8th and 12th cause disturbances, debts, forced service, challenges, illnesses, diseases, death, losses, etc in life. The 6th is the mahadushamsthan, the biggest source of trouble, which makes you suffer or serve. Also I have written about Bhavat Bhavam in this post and this post. The bhavat bhavam houses for the three dushamsthans –
- The 3rd house is bhavat bhavam for the 8th house
- The 11th house is bhavat bhavam two dusham houses – the 6th and the 12th.
- Bhavat bhavam of the 6th house, means that the 11th fine tunes your requirement to serve, to suffer, the chronic problems in your life, your disappointments etc.
- Bhavat bhavam of the 12th means that it is the 11th which subtly regulates all types of losses which your personality will face in life.
Thus it is the 11th which in fact subtly controls two major sources of trouble in your life.
The 11th is the house of gains but ‘gain’ is often deceptive. Material gains are available for only this one life. Spiritual gains will continue in the next lives and are the real gains of this human life. 99% of us completely ignore spiritual gains in our insatiable pursuit of material gains and this is the biggest tragedy.
The 11th is the mirror of the 5th house, it can potentially to drain the resources of your mantra, your creative potential, your genius etc. It can drain the energy assets which you create using your genius and divert these to material gains. In terms of relationships, this is the lover, the child, the student in whom we take pride. A powerful 11th can drain you of this emotion/ creative satisfaction you feel for these people and this can be painful. The the 5th house also plays an important role for attaining Moksh. Anything which drains the 5th for the material will affect your movement towards your Self.
Finally there is an easy way to know if your 11th is overall auspicious for you. Evaluate your relationship with your older brother/sister. Or your older cousins. Or your relationships with the people you think are your ‘friends’. Or observe your mental state and behaviour when you attend large parties. Or when you attend large meetings in your office. Or when you interact with several people who share your interests. If these people of the 11th are good to you, eg you have happy memories with them and do not turn bitter with time, then your 11th is supportive for you. But if these relationships give you pain then it is an indication that the 11th house is inauspicious for you and you should act wisely in the matters of this house so that you avoid getting hurt in the future.

1. If I do avoid these people, I still will never be able to avoid the prarbhdha, will I?
2. 11th house is also your income so if I know through the agents of 11th house that it is not favourable for me does it also means that I don’t have a good income?
3. How much time does a particular Dasha change takes to show completely? Meaning that if I enter into a new dasha right now, how much time do you think it will take for me to be able to recover from the previous events and for new things to enter into my life?
Hi there
1. Nothing can be 100% avoided. You have to go thru your prarabdha and you have chosen it fr yourself.
But you can reduce the impact to the lowest possible.
2. Several houses contribute to income. Wrote on it.
3. Last antardasha and first antardasha are the transitional ones. Happens gradually over a period of 2-3 yrs. wrote on it.
Thank you for your post, it was very insightful.
Just want to share with you my personal experience about the 11th house..
Some context: Libra lagna with very strong 11th house lord/bhava (exchange of sign and lord with 6th house, retrogade, vargottam in D-9, high sthanbala, shadbala, etc..) Currently in Jupiter dasha.
There are moments where I felt repressed by older siblings (e.g. unnecessary servitude, standing against me on topics that I think are important to me due to pettiness, jealousy, etc) Same thing with long-term group projects: I got cheated by people who I considered very dear friends.
However, I think because due to very high Istha bala, I believe the blows are softened into better purposes in my life: Better perspectives, some material gains and most importantly, the hurt played a tremendous role in guiding me back to my Inner self, which is an invaluable treasure given everything mentioned above.
Again, thank you for your insights.
Hi there
You are welcome
* slight correction: Jupiter has high Shadbala, sthanbala and Istha but Surya is average.
Respected ma’am
Considering the above discourse what will be the relatively best position of venus for sagittarius ascendant.
Thanks
Paritosh
Hi there
Wrote on the ascendants.
There is no ‘best position’ fr the planets. Each position can b used proactively if you choose to.
Pranams Madam,
1. Have a question. Sometimes Its not just greed, but sometimes its also “fear of future” which pushes us to keep earning. (“Vina dainyena jeevanam” ). Is that nor the case ? How do we differentiate between them ? And know when to stop ?
2. Also since 11th house from any house represents gains, to analyse spiritual gains should I take 11th from 5th or 9th house ?
Thank you.
Hi there
1. 3 dangerous mindsets.
Greed – to keep on enjoying wht you have enjoyed once
Fear – to fear loss of the experience you are enjoying
Anger – at the thought that someone may force you to give up or snatch away what you are enjoying.
This is why we all must read the Gita, one shlok a day for a lifetime is a very doable target.
“Do everything, enjoy everything and if required endure through everything but with the thought that all this is happening to the body and the body is not Me.” One day the body too will b discarded so what to say of the experiences tht the body goes thru? Simplest meaning of Moksh is Tyag.
2. I would prefer using the D20.
But in D1 use the 11th house. the planets in it will determine if you appreciate/are aware of the spiritual or material gains.
Not everyone wants spiritual gains. So the power of the chart has to be seen . Wrote a lot on rahu ketu spirituality malefics etc.
Beautiful post Mam. As a Pisces ascendant with retrograde Saturn in 9th house with a high Shadbala, I could resonant with every word in this post. Eventually all the losses from the “expectations” from the 11th house, and reading this blog helped me turn to the Gita which has been a great personal blessing. The first few years of the current Saturn Mahadasha have been turbulent to say the least, with material losses outweighing all material gains. But turning to our scriptures, also gives me the hope and faith that Shani Dev will teach me all the right lessons in the next 14 odd years if I have the humility and the right mindset to accept these lessons.
This blog really resonated with me. Not sure why. Because all your blogs are exceptional.l Thank you.
Namaste, could you write more about Capricorn ascendant? In your post on Ascendants and Functional malefics you listed Capricorn as having five functional malefics. But in the explanation you stated that it only had four malefics. Considering that the ascendant lord itself is a malefic, Saturn, could you write more on Capricorn please? Dhanyvad 🙏
HI there
saturn is not a malefic for capricorn ascendant.
But it rules 2nd house, a marakesh?
Moon and Saturn are marakesh for Capricorn ascendant. If Capricorn ascendant has both moon and Saturn conjunct?
Hi there
Wrote several posts on the asc lord.
