Pisces the Paradoxical ascendent

There are three watery signs. Moveable Cancer, Fixed Scorpio and Dual-natured Pisces. When any of these signs gets placed in the ascendant, it creates a powerful personality with typical attributes. The depth of the fathomless sea, intuition, power to manipulate the astral body, access to the other dimensions etc. They are more in tune with their astral selves rather than their material selves and they all face very typical problems, which perhaps are the hardest of the lot. I have written a lot about the Cancer and Scorpio ascendants earlier, this post is about Pisces as the rising house. Pisces is an auspicious sign, but like the other two watery signs it has its own deep challenges. I have written about Moon in Pisces rashi here. And if you were born with Pisces in your 1st house, you are again the summary of the zodiac.

84ebbf0fa309ad2d59ce56fa5646d7b8

Jupiter owns Pisces. The Teacher of Knowledge, the one who always supports, does not let you fall, allows you gather resources for your next jump up, the resourceful, benevolent, hopeful, expansive force rules Pisces.

Then the Teacher of the Esoteric, Venus, is exalted in Pisces. This is a very important bit of information. Venus is the real Moksh-karak, the one who guides you to your deepest one-one relationship with your higher self. Read this post on Venus and Jupiter to know why Venus is exalted here and how Jupiter and Venus both support each other in their typical manner. Venus in Pisces guides the Soul to the divine and Jupiter provides the resources which will be burnt to gain that eternal experience.

And finally Mercury is debilitated in Pisces, another significant point. Mercury represents duality, the actions which lead to creation of karma and also the karmic conditions where you choose to serve or suffer in order to rebalance this karma. He is debilitated in Pisces, ie the energy of this rashi’s environment is completely unsuited to Mercury’s typical nature and activities. In Pisces, you are required to search for the universal, the one common thread linking all. Here you understand that you work not for personal gains but for the benefit of the universal good. This last sign of the zodiac is a paradox of combining completely opposite concepts which are perfectly united, fertility/ loss, movement/ stillness, duality/ nonduality, regeneration/decay, completion/start of a new cycle. The choice is yours how you use the potential energy of these attributes of Pisces, your ascendant rashi.

Pisces in the 1st house is again a bridge, you connect. You link people, situations, dimensions, consciousness, impossible odds, anything and everything can be connected by you. You are happiest and feel fulfilled when you act as the link between. Try to incorporate this concept in some way in your life, you will feel more satisfied with yourself. Pisces contains 3 lunar mansions, Poorva-bhadrapada, Uttara-bhadrapada and Revati. The Revati borns face typical problems if the exact rising degree falls in the Gandant zone, so if you are such a person, do read my posts on the Gandant and how you deal with these very typical issues.

Pisces rising gives you a soft, quiet and gentle personality. You are religious-minded and spiritual by nature and you are respected for this. You are irresistible, shy and generally very charming, cute? Your appearance and behaviour is attractive, you are kind, others are compelled to approach you, you are very attractive. Actually your astral self, as projected through your aura is very attractive, people are pulled to you because of your genuinely loving, benevolent, non-judgemental aura. They feel peace when they are close to you. You will find people confiding in you, you know secrets about everyone you know! And you never take advantage of anyone else, though others can at times take advantage of your gentle all-accepting nature.

Pisces the Paradoxical ascendent

You are generally well-off, good-natured, sympathetic, empathetic, a good listener and a good companion. Your perspective is generally original, you look at things very differently. You are very clear about family, friends, social relations and if you feel that you are required to do something for others you do it willingly. You are generally content by nature, generous, always willing to share or give.  Basically an honest, religious helpful person, your intentions are good, you wish to do good by others and you try to help others as possible. Aware of society and social behaviour, you like interacting with the large groups around you. But if you stay in large groups for long, you get uneasy as your aura gets over whelmed by so many people around you. You are not active, no hustle bustle to you. Relatively passive, you accept the situations as they come. You are rather clueless about strategising and creating conditions to for your personal advantage, rather innocent in the ways of life.

You are restless, you search, but for what?, this only you know. You are dreamy, not practical, absent minded, you forget all those things which don’t make you ‘feel’. You can seem impressionable, vague and directionless. An open mind which accepts influences, opinions and ideas like a sponge. You are changeable in your manner and behaviour. You are not objective in life but subjective. Less logic, less numbers, less hard reality and more feelings, more intuition more love. You require freedom, you like to explore, but this is more an internal freedom to ‘feel’ as you desire. You ‘feel’ your way through life. You like touching your loved one too, hugs, kisses and cuddles satisfy you. If your loved one puts restrictions on your feelings/ behaviour or disregards your intuition, this will cause problems between you two.

But one interesting thing about Pisces is this, you, after Capricorn, are the best decision-maker of the zodiac. Surprised? You are connected to your astral sum and  have intuitive sources of information which other signs cannot even fathom. You are the repository of the learnings of the entire zodiac so have a tremendous resource within you. If you are ever required to take a decision about something which touches you, you can take the best possible decision at that time, very practical and fair. But if you are not emotionally linked to the topic, if it means nothing to you, you will be vague, indecisive and your usual dreamy self. The Paradox of the Pisces!

You avoid conflict. One reason is that harsh words tear into your aura, so you get psychic attacked by the person who is arguing with you. You cannot defend yourself from astral attacks, especially if it is your loved one attacking you. In case you do not know how to repair your tattered aura, there are spirits around who dig hooks into your torn aura and suck up your energy. This aura damage causes real harm to you on all levels. Second reason is your very high emotional sensitivity. You get into an argument and the same argument comes up again later. Now you not only remember the initial argument but you remember how you felt, it is so intense that it feels like that same argument is happening again with double the associated emotions. You remember emotions! So you cannot bear intensely negative emotions or situations especially if they happen again and again.

You want an easy-going life and you enjoy whatever you have. You generally have a good house, cars etc, life is reasonably comfortable. You are quite attached to your family, siblings, spouse and children. Girlfriends/ boyfriends are quite possible and you should beware of getting into undesirable relationships before/ outside marriage. You are quite romantic in marriage and like spending time with your spouse, having close emotional bonds feels good. You like giving and receiving gifts, visible expressions of love are important to you. Married life is generally stable and happy. The spouse is generally reliable, intelligent, adaptable and practical. You are rather dreamy and impractical so your loved one is required to do all the practical stuff, like money budgeting, bank balance, major life plans etc. You follow him without question or hesitation. So marry only after matching the horoscopes and marry someone who values your love and complete trust.

Your father has an important role in your life, maybe you are attached more to him than your mother. Or you may have a spiritual father, a Sat-Guru, to whom you look up to for spiritual support. The friend-circle is good, there are intelligent and positive people here. You derive emotional comfort from these people around you. You have very deep sense of emotions. Highly aware of your and others emotions, emotional pleasure or pain touches your soul deeply. This sensitivity is the source of your creative inclinations. You generally keep your personal desires secret and channelise them through your work, you write or paint etc, express yourself in some creative way. Your creative works will have a touch of mystery and can showcase your hidden depths. You can be a professional artist if you want to. Your professional life, social mobility and social status is generally quite satisfactory.

Generally healthy, but not very robust, you tire easily. This tiredness is linked to your sensitive aura again. Best go for annual check-ups once a year after mid-life. You do not like taking medicines, there might be some drug sensitivity or allergic reactions. Your aura is weak around the feet so you can lose your energy from here. Your aura is very susceptible so follow a schedule of cleansing, grounding and shielding. This will prevent evil eye and psychic attacks, you are more prone to these than any other sign of the zodiac. You cannot resist anything which attacks or makes demands from you on any level.

During your childhood and in the young age there are typical difficulties mostly because of your sensitivity to auras and the astral planes. Children are more sensitive as it is when they are young, so this double sensitivity can cause you problems. But this is the reason why Pisces is so different. You have experienced life in all its hues through others in such a young age. These childhood issues ease out as your planets mature one after the others. You reach your complete sense of yourself in the late 40-s after which life becomes more easy and auspicious things happen to you. After this age, you are more comfortable in your own personality and this is evident in your aura. People will ask you for advice and hold your words in high esteem.

(Eg one of my sisters is a very dominant Pisces, her father was a lawyer who gave free legal advice to poor people after office-hours. These people would also come to his house for help. Their auras, the energy of their words, all very disturbed people right in the house everyday. She could sense all this but as a child did not understand what was happening to her. So she vicariously lived through so many traumas, divorces, deaths, murders, cheating, etc absorbing the energies of these twisted legal issues connected to all these people on a daily basis. She suffered alone and intensely in her childhood, but today she is truly one of the gentlest and kindest souls I know. This rather traumatic childhood experience has with time created genuine compassion in her soul.)

Now with this ascendant, there are some typical hardships which can occur suddenly without warning. One advice is to ever gamble in life. Or never take up risky ventures as you might lose your money. Another inner divide you face is your powerful belief in individuality but still you deeply believe in the unified whole. This statement can make sense to only a Pisces! This leads to a dual mindset as you are unable to choose between the material or the spiritual. On one side you want to experience the highest spiritual and on the other hand the sensory and material gratification beckons. The extent of this duality will depend on the individual horoscope, but it will exist (this existential schism is a common features of all watery sign ascendants). You might get bad advice from your siblings and friends. So before acting on such advice do ask your inner conscience. Selfishness, cruelty, immoral activities etc are bad karma, avoid them assiduously, you, Pisces, will suffer more than anyone else. You are a bit dreamy by nature, very hopeful, looking for the good in everyone else, you are too innocent to realise obvious dangers. So if you have someone genuine you trust, do take his opinion on saving money, investments etc material stuff. Be careful about giving your trust or love to anyone.

Pisces is two fish apparently swimming in opposite directions, but still always together. This curious duality actually indicates a deep singularity. These two fish swim continuously but do not go apart. This indicates your very deep struggle to hold on to your sense of self. You are hard at work to remain still, a paradox. Your duality is controlled in such a way that the Non-dual emerges. This is a very high precision thing that Pisces does. Outwardly dreamy, passive, you are hard at work within to remain absolutely still. This is the reason why this rashi is connected to Moksh. If you desire to and work hard to achieve that perfect stillness, this sign will provide you the necessary environment to attain the Eternal. There is no compulsion in Pisces, the ego is still and you are connected to the divine. You are willing to do whatever is required of you. As always you have a choice, if you choose to enjoy the Game some more, the fish can easily move apart to distort the equilibrium. Duality can reassert itself and again start a new cycle as Aries follows Pisces. Pisces acts as a bridge between Duality and the Non-dual. Or between one creation cycle and the next.

I found this image on the internet and whoever has made this, has done a lovely job. A Pisces dominated personality is Love, very loveable and eager to love, hearts sprinkled all over. I have seen that Pisces is the most non-judgemental one, he accepts anything from his loved one, without question or hesitation. And look at his mirror, Virgo with his broken heart. Virgos are so anxious about everything that they worry about love, expressions of love, falling in love, their loved one, worry so much that cannot see what their mirror Pisces is offering them, always. Thus the Virgo broken heart, a heart in such anxiety that it does not know to love, doesn’t recognise love if it is offered to him on a platter. And only a Pisces can love such a mirror, Pisces has so many extra hearts in him that he can easily make up for his loved Virgo’s broken one. But then having so many hearts can be an issue too, if a Pisces deeply loves someone with all his hearts, and then gets his hearts broken, all those hearts on his body break, this then results in unending pain for the Pisces. Sometimes being so full of love is a hard place to be.

Pisces the Paradoxical ascendent

Venus Jupiter in opposition or conjunction

This is a rather thought-provoking and a lengthy post.

The two Guru-s of the zodiac, Devguru Bruhaspati and Daityaguru Shukracharya in opposition, mutual aspect, placed opposite each other ie in the 7/7 axis. This may seem like a nice placement but can be a subtly problematic element in the chart. Even for selecting a muhurt, ie auspicious timing for performing important works, Venus-Jupiter opposition in the skies is considered unfavourable.

Open your chart. Find out Venus’s degree position. Add 180deg to this. This is the exact opposite point. See if you have Jupiter placed within 15deg on either side of this point (This is a 7% probability). If you have a Venus-Jupiter mutual aspect in your birth chart then you are slightly different. The final results will depend on the signs/ houses involved and the rest of the horoscope but this causes typical deep issues related to the individual soul/ Jivatma. (If you have Venus-Jupiter conjunct, ie within 15deg of each other then too expect similar results, this is also a 7% probability.)

Venus and Jupiter in opposition

These two are permanent enemies and as they are placed in the 7/7 axis their immediate status for the chart also becomes inimical. So they become ‘greatest enemies’ for each other. Both are uncomfortable, sitting opposite each other, staring at each other. They are permanently and immediately inimical. eg I intensely dislike someone and he is sitting right in front of me, staring! makes the situation worse. Whatever they are supposed to give in that chart, they cannot do it properly. They are now deadly enemies, but their enmity is not your average swords drawn and baying for blood types, it is the sophisticated, refined upper class sort. Which, perhaps is worse. (Similarly for the conjunction)

The Venus-Jupiter mutual aspect or conjunction creates deep conflicts within the individual soul. Both these graha are Guru, so you desperately crave spiritual nourishment, but there is no clarity on which route to take. This causes internal anguish, a deep dissatisfaction with life. They do give all material stuff for the mind and the body, but the individual soul doesn’t find satisfaction in these and searches restlessly. You search for spiritual guidance, often going to one Guru then to another and you seem fickle in your protestations of religiosity/ spirituality.

On the outward levels, you love luxuries, are easy going, very motivated on what you really want to do, generous, affectionate, loyal, idealistic, intelligent, generally well off in life, in some suitable profession, inclined towards religious pursuits, etc. But on the inner levels there is a deep disconnect with the desires of the body/mind and the desire of the soul. The married life is generally problematic. The spouse has very different thought processes and expectations from life which in the long run causes serious differences. It can be unfair on the person you marry and generally ends up in a superficial marriage of convenience or a break. There are very real chances of not getting married at all, late marriage, separation, divorce, early death of the spouse etc depending on the entire chart. This combination does not promote marital happiness or companionship. As a parent you generally have limited children, the children can be gifted with occult abilities. Internally it can get quite messy, though superficially it all seems ok.

Venus and Jupiter in opposition

Let’s analyse. Both are spiritual teachers, one is the Guru of the Dev-s, the sons of Aditi, and the other is the Guru of the Daitya-s, the sons of Diti. They have an allegory/ history going back to when they were students at Rishi Angiras’s gurukul/ school. Venus was the brightest, the class-topper. And Jupiter, Angiras’s own son, was second. Campus interviews, the Dev-s wanted Angiras to suggest them a suitable guide, and he with a father’s selfishness wanted this cushy job for Jupiter. Venus justifiably felt very bad, so went and offered his guidance to the Daitya-s who disliked the Dev-s. They were grateful and welcomed him. The Dev and Danav factions constantly wage war with each other. As they fight it out on the gross levels, their Guru-s are also enemies but on the spiritual levels. In the story/ allegories they are called demi-gods and demons, but Dev represent your Rajasic-Satvic tendencies and the Daitya are your Rajasic-Tamasic tendencies. (Samkhya does pop up everywhere, but it is unavoidable, it is the prelude to Advaita.)

Jupiter is routinely considered to be the agent of benevolence, luck, divine blessings, the spiritual preceptor, protection, the help you receive from your peers/ patrons, your auspicious karmas from your past lives etc. His primary job is to connect you with the divine, to expand your consciousness. Jupiter prefers the external trappings of worship, pujas, going to temples, moorthi-puja, mantra and the rest of the showy stuff. He maintains order and tradition in spirituality too, he will not allow deviation. He generally does not allow esoteric, experimental stuff, and sticks to the standard path. And you cannot remain satisfied with indefinite external religion, you have to turn inwards to progress. And each one of us is different so a bit of experimentation and personal touch to the spiritual path is essential. Jupiter does not allow this to happen (hint: Jupiter’s mooltrikon is not Pisces but Sagittarius, why? work it out for yourself).

He is located at the Swadhishtan chakra. Bruhaspati means the ‘force which enters the expanded infinity and causes change’. One point to be always remembered with Jupiter is that he enhances and expands the results of the signs/ planets/ houses he touches rather than creating something on his own. He is responsible for regulating the satvic tendencies in you, a rather easy job, a routine SOP. He does not think out of the box, nor is adaptable or sociable, more like pompous, traditional and thinks himself to be higher than the rest. His students ie the Dev-s, are satvic-rajasic tendencies so he believes that if the material needs are satisfied, his students will naturally incline towards the spiritual, like there is no other option. A very hopeful teacher, but this is not very sensible expectation nor an effective approach especially in these modern times.

Jupiter cannot grant the deepest Illumination. He supports material+religious together. He can help you gather your material, mental, subtle etc forces.  He can grant you a solid foundation to make your attempt. He can sustain, strengthen, motivate you while you prepare for the jump from the ‘form’ to the ‘formless’. He will help you reach the springboard from which you will jump. He can stop you from falling. But Jupiter cannot make you jump towards your inner Self. This last is the exclusive speciality of Venus, the Shukracharya, only he knows how this final attempt is to be performed.

Venus and Jupiter in opposition

’Shukracharya’, means ‘the spiritual teacher who teaches the brightest brilliance’, a highly benefic planet capable of giving very auspicious results. Shukra operates from the Anahata chakra and your consciousness expands out from this chakra. Venus is ‘desire’, ‘kaam’. This ‘desire’ on the very gross levels is reflected in the desires of the body, sexual desires, physical relation with other humans, luxuries, money, wealth, sensual desires, passions, indulgence etc. But he is always sophistication not lust. He is an artist, a Kavi, he creates infinite beauty. One level up, he initiates intellectual desires, refinement, desires of the mind, ie creative art, poetry, classics, fine arts etc. And then deepest is the desire of the soul. For the rare few, if you pass his tests, he unveils to you your own deepest desire.

This is the real face of Venus, the Sat-Guru, who will make you aware of your deepest desire. The desire of the individual soul to experience its Reality. You are deeply attracted only to your own Reality and nothing else. The desires of the body and mind are illusions and ultimately irrelevant. This is the lesson that Venus is out to teach. He will give you the desires of the body/ mind but gradually make you aware of their illusory nature. He creates a subtle dissatisfaction with the physical/mental and waits to see if you realise the depth of your soul’s desire. If you don’t, you get a subtle kick from the material life. He will subtly rap your knuckles till you realise. His function is to regulate your tamasic qualities and ultimately bring your consciousness above these qualities. He refines your individual soul, removes the dross, till your pure Brilliance is unveiled to your own eyes.

The most difficult task has been assigned to the most competent Guru, the class-topper. Thus his teaching methods are practical, different, adaptable, creative and sure-shot successes. His students are the worst back-benchers, tamasic-rajasic, they will bunk classes if given half the chance. But he has accepted them as his students so he will do his job. He is pragmatic, he has seen the worst tendencies of the mind (he has seen his own Guru give preference to the second best student in a fit of paternal love). He has no illusions and no ego. Even when he offered his guidance to the Daitya-s, he knew the enormity of the task he was taking up but he is coolly capable and confident about his ability. So he does gives the material stuff but springs cryptic surprise tests on his students to ensure that they realise the illusory nature of it all. If they fail his tests, they have to repeat his lessons till they realise. He is a very thorough rigorous teacher who knows the secret of ‘Immortality’.

He has a job to do and he will do it perfectly, he will reveal to you your soul’s desire and also the perfect way to satisfy it. He is the supreme teacher of the most essential, high, secret, personal, esoteric face of spirituality. He is exalted in Pisces just for this reason. He has only one eye, ie his third eye is open. He allows the final merger of the individual soul into the infinite singularity. He is the ultimate desire to Unite and is Unity himself.

Venus and Jupiter in opposition

Thus there is an essential difference between Jupiter and Venus. Both Gurus, but both teaching very different types of disciples, with very different methods of teaching. One is brilliant, concentrated, practical. The other is expansive, hopeful, lucky?

As Jupiter and Venus fight it out face to face, their different natures become apparent. Jupiter expands Venus’s qualities and Venus appreciates Jupiter’s but both cannot come to a conclusion about what they want to do together. There is another very important story/ allegory of the Samudra manthan, where the Dev and Daitya factions stand opposite each other but in a rare spirit of cooperation churn the Ksheer-Samudra. This churning produces first a deadly poison but then final immortality is achieved. These two in mutual opposition in your chart is something like this. They churn the Three-gun, Satva-Raja-Tama relentlessly. The material life is subtly poisoned and only when all the planets mature, ie the late 40-s does the soul Realise what it desires.

The best solution for you is to do something on the spiritual front. Sometimes Jupiter will dominate, as per Dasha/transits, so you will do external pujas and stuff. In this stage you will gather your resources. And at other times Venus will dominate, so you will trash your pujas and do personal mediation, burning those resources to push your consciousness higher. This will be a cyclic pattern. Things start making sense in the 40-s. Now they cooperate, Jupiter provides the fuel for Venus to burn. And Venus will rocket you off to your own self. If the rest of the horoscope permits, you can achieve Moksh or at least high levels of spiritual progress in life. Choose your path well, this opposition is a very rare opportunity.

venus and jupiter in opposition

(Two charts from my own family have Jupiter-Venus exactly 180 deg opposite each other, to the degree. About 0.2% people have this rarest opportunity. In this complex inner torment, if Rahu-Ketu are involved, then the person goes through severe karmic events on the inner levels. Surprisingly both have Rahu/Ketu influencing the Venus/Jupiter. The rarest energies. And finally the third chart, my Sat-Guru, had an exact conjunction of Venus-Jupiter on the same degree and again they were heavily influenced by Rahu.)

Delayed or denied marriage

You will get clients who have questions related to marriage. When will they get married? Or will they ever get married? There are a few typical combinations where marriage can be delayed or denied. You will need the exact time of birth. The birth chart, the birth Moon chart, the navamsha chart and the Ashtakvarga are required. (If birth time is not available, use the Prashna system. You can use the current moment’s chart, its Navamsha etc).

Delayed or denied marriage

Some of the factors linked to marriage,

Things to see from the birth chart –

  • Venus is the natural ruler of the 7th sign of the zodiac, so naturally his power to give results must be examined. He is the natural ruler of all types of relationships.
  • The 7th house is the most important house of legal partnerships. The planets placed or aspecting here will influence marriage matters.
  • Similarly the lord of the 7th house has to be examined. These above factors will give the physical results related to marriage.
  • Libra is the natural 7th house of the zodiac, so check if there are any adverse impacts on it. These will be subtle effects modifying the physical situation.
  • Role of the 5th house and its lord is rather limited, this represents ‘glamorous self-centred love’, not marriage. But you can use the information from this house. Eg ‘love affairs’ which did not lead to marriage. Or ‘broken-heart’ situations, where the 5th house’s unfulfilled romance changed the person’s mindset against formal marriage. A very strong 5th house can indicate that the person is a genius, a celebrity, a star and not interested in the partnership of marriage.
  • If the entire Dharma trikon, ie the 1st, 5th and 9th house/lords of the chart is very powerful, the person may remain unmarried because of a very dominant personality, focussed on the self, which is very comfortable with himself.
  • In rare cases, a 8th house/ lord if heavily influenced by malefics can also deny marriage as this house represents the family of the spouse. A 8th house which can give auspicious results gives a good relationship with the in-laws and the spouse’s family is well-off.
  • Finally and most importantly, power of the ascendant sign, ascendant ruler and the birth Moon. If these three factors are well placed and give auspicious results, problems in the chart are reduced in intensity. Eg the person may not get married but the mental worry and physical hardship of living the life alone will not exist. The personality, the environment, the ‘fitting in’ and the emotional states are robust.

’Examine’ means to check out every influence on the planet/houses we have identified above. eg Venus, the sign he is placed in, the condition of this sign’s owner and his interaction with Venus (eg if they are in the 6/8 axis it will give some discomfort). The planets together with or aspecting Venus. All this from the birth chart also called the 1st divisional chart. Do this for all the planets/signs we have identified.

  • Malefics, benefics, neutral planets conjoint or aspecting. Especially look for involvement of Saturn, he delays/denies.
  • Exalted, debilitated, in maran-karak sthan. Is the planet in the sign owned by a friendly, enemy or neutral planet.
  • Retrograde, combust, or involved in graha-yuddha/planetary wars.
  • Hemmed in by malefics, ie the houses on either side of the planet have only malefics, this gives unfavourable results. Or hemmed in by benefics which gives good results. (Hemming in of the 7th house by malefics, ie the 6th and 8th houses contain malefics generally denies marriage and gives a good professional life.)
  • Exchange of this planet with the owner of the 6th or 8th or 12th houses.
  • If the planets in the horoscope are concentrated in fiery and earthy signs only, it can delay/deny marriage or grant childlessness.

Every influence will give its result, nothing gets cancelled out. Intensity may vary, depending on aspects and placements, but something of the effect will be there. (Eg one chart I know has an auspicious Venus with Ketu in the 5th house, aspected by a well-placed 7th house ruler from the 11th house. This person had two marriages. She married her current husband a few years after death of the first. Both were well-known, powerful and rich. Both marriages were pleasant experiences with a spiritual angle.)

Delayed or denied marriage

The Moon chart –

Now turn around the birth chart so that the Moon and his sign are counted as the 1st house. Examine the 7th house from this Moon. This sign and its lord will give the astral, emotional and comfort levels of the married state. Malefic influences here can impact the marriage event itself. Examine the position of Venus relative to the Moon, if it is in an uncomfortable axis, it will reduce the auspicious nature of the marriage event.

The Ashtakvarga table –

Open the Ashtakvarga table and check out the power of the planets which we have identified above to give results. (Two posts on how to analyse the Ashtakvarga, here and here).

Navamsha chart –

Next open the Navamsha or the 9th divisional chart. The Navamsha is analysed in comparison with the birth chart. Look for the following at least,

  • You have identified the signs in the 1st house and 7th house from the birth chart. Now check if any planet gets placed in these signs in the D-9. If malefics occupy these signs in the D9, it is unfavourable.
  • You have identified the planets (placed in or aspecting) connected to the 7th house from the birth chart. In addition there are 4 planets, Venus, ascendant lord, 7th house lord and Moon. Locate these planets in the D9, in which signs are they placed? Note these signs and open the basic birth chart again, locate these signs in the birth chart, which houses do these signs occupy in the birth chart? If these signs occupy the 6th house, 8th house or the 12th house of the birth chart, then the concerned planets are unfavourable.

Now we have identified a lot of points which are linked to the marriage event, some of them are bound to be there in the client’s chart. As a basic idea, if there are more than 5 of these points in the chart you are examining, consider it as case of delay and with every additional point it can become a case for denial of marriage.

Dasha and Transits

In addition the transits and Dasha-s have to be examined to get a complete picture. Marriage is possible only during Dasha periods of the planets involved in the marriage potential as we have identified above. In addition this has to be supported by favourable transits influencing the 7th house. In delayed marriages, this favourable time comes late in life. In denied marriages it does not occur in the life-time.

‘Marriage’ from an astrological point of view is a Karmic and Dharmic bond willingly accepted by a man and a woman in front of a witness. The witness can be the law of the land, a ritual, the Agni/fire, Sun, deity, priest, society or even the person’s internal conscience. The energies of the two link at the deepest energy levels as a Dharma-pati and Dharma-patni. it is a Sanskar., there is no concept of divorce, this lasts till one of the two physically leaves the body. However there can be multiple marriage events in one lifetime.

In these times, where the profession and personal life style is becoming more important, marriage is not mandatory anymore. People opt for romantic liaisons, flings, live-in relationships often with no children. So you might see more clients with delay/ denial of marriage in their horoscopes. And there is nothing wrong about not getting married. But in the long term, the existence of a solid society and robust traditions/culture still depends on the institution of marriage.

Delayed or denied marriage

Yogkarak planets, functional benefics

Yogkarak planets are an important concept in reading a chart. These are functional benefics for the chart and are determined as follows. In your chart, the basic birth chart with the ascendant as the 1st house, check out the following planets,

  1. The lords of houses 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th (these are called the Kendra houses)
  2. The lords of the houses 5th, 9th (these are called the Kona houses, together with the 1st they make up the Dharma trikon)

If you have a planet which simultaneously owns a house in both of these categories then it is a Yogkarak, a powerful functional benefic for the chart and your life.

Here is the list of Yogkarak planets for the ascendants,

  1. Aries ascendant – None of the planets fulfil this condition
  2. Taurus ascendant – Saturn is the lord of the 9th house (sign is Capricorn) and the lord of the 10th house (sign is Aquarius).
  3. Gemini ascendant – None of the planets fulfil this condition
  4. Cancer ascendant – Mars as he owns one Kona house i.e. 5th house (sign is Scorpio ) and one Kendra, the 10th house (sign is Aries).
  5. Leo ascendant – Mars, as the lord of the 4th house, Kendra (sign here is Scorpio) and also owns a Kona, i.e. is the lord of the 9th house (sign here is Aries).
  6. Virgo ascendant– None of the planets fulfil this condition
  7. Libra ascendantSaturn, he is the lord of one Kendra, lord of 4th house (sign is Capricorn) and also owns the 5th house (sign here is Aquarius).
  8. Scorpio ascendant – None of the planets fulfil this condition
  9. Sagittarius ascendant – None of the planets fulfil this condition
  10. Capricorn ascendant – Venus as the lord of the 5th house (sign here is Taurus) and the lord of the 10th house (sign here is Libra)
  11. Aquarius ascendant – Venus as the lord of the 4th house (sign here is Taurus ) and also is the lord of the 9th house (sign here is Libra)
  12. Pisces ascendant – None of the planets fulfil this condition

It may seem a bit strange that the so-called malefic planets, Mars and Saturn are Yogkaraks but Jupiter considered to be the biggest benefic is not a Yogkarak for any ascendant.

Yogkarak planets, functional benefics

Yogkarak for Venus ruled ascendants is Saturn and vice versa. Makes sense in a way, as Venus and Saturn are best buddies. Venus and Saturn may sound a bit funny, something like a happy handsome outgoing man being best friends with an aged sour, workholic discipline freak older man. But look into their natures closely. They match. Both love discipline, Venus too does not like if you break the rules, his rules are moral, of fairness and balance. He is the toughest teacher, teaches us the value of relationships. Both are deeply connected with death. Saturn rules the endurance of your frame and Venus will decide when you have filled your treasuries and thus its time to leave.

So what does this Yogkarak do? In a chart, if the owners of the Kendra and Kona houses are together in a single house they get the capacity to give extraordinary results. The Yogkarak in the specific ascendant’s chart has double the power, as he owns both types of houses, a Kendra and Kona. Thus wherever he may be placed he will always give excellent results. If the Yogkarak planet of a chart is placed well, exalted, with other benefics or in his own sign or has his power enhanced in any way (e.g. in the further divisional charts), it is even better. They can change the entire outlook of the chart.

Saturn is Yogkarak for Libra and Taurus, works well everywhere. If he is placed in a Kendra or Kona, he will give exceptional results for the entire personality. Even in the dushamsthan 6th, 8th and 12th, he will bring out the best possible he can.

  • For Taurus ascendant, if Yogkarak Saturn in the 12th house, sign Aries, he can cause a few problems as he will be debilitated.
  • For Libra ascendant, he will be debilitated in 7th house (sign Aries) which can delay marriage but Saturn’s direct aspect over the ascendant itself can give very good results.

Mars is the Yogkarak for Cancer and Leo ascendant, ruled by the luminaries the Moon and the Sun. Thus the dreaded Manglik tag need not be quite applied to charts having these ascendant signs. Such a Mars can give quite good results overall because of his position as a Yogkarak.

  • For Cancer ascendant, Mars the yogkarak gives very good results in all houses, wherever he may be. If he is in the ascendant Cancer itself, he will be debilitated but still can give good results for the personality. However will cause problems in marriage because of his direct aspect on the 7th house. Such a person will always be aggressive with his loved one.
  • For Leo ascendant, Yogkarak Mars gives good results in all the houses he is placed in, except the 12th house (sign Cancer) where he is debilitated.
  • For both these ascendants, Mars in the 8th can cause some issues, but if such a person follows some deep meditation, Dhyan, pranayam etc where he actively works on his breathing, it will be of use.

Venus is the Yogkarak for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants. He will perform quite well in all houses, even in his sign of debilitation Virgo.

  • For Capricorn ascendant, Venus debilitated will be in the 9th house. So will be very supportive in life, securing its very foundations.
  • For the Aquarius ascendant, Venus will be debilitated in the 8th house occupied by Virgo. So will support by providing good natured, wealthy in-laws family and also will grant inheritance and legacies and bequeaths.

So if you ever get a chart with the ascendant signs, Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius look out for the Yogkarak planets and what they are offering. Their gifts can be so powerful that they can change the entire outlook of the horoscope.

Analysing Spirituality in the horoscope

Nothing is secret in your horoscope. So how do you check out the spiritual level of a horoscope. If its spiritual quotient is high the client is more likely to listen and work on himself and get out of the problems he is having. Each and every house contributes to spiritual progress like this…

1st house – This house should have benefics or at least benefic aspects. This will ensure that the will of the personality is strong enough to overcome all distractions and obstacles. In addition the ascendant owner should be placed well, if he is in the company of malefics or in the dushamsthans, he will grant ill-health and problems. The ascendant owner is the most important planet in your current manifested life so analyse him well.

2nd house – The family environment gives the basic spiritual background and a routine for faith/religion, like daily prayers etc. Also we can see from here if a person tends to cheat in his financial dealings or lies when he speaks. Charity is also seen from here. These are tiny things but honest, generous and true behaviour supports spirituality. Benefic influences here help.

3rd house – This is the house of courage and all planets perform well here. Often we start on a spiritual practice but then falter, forget and get bored. A strong 3rd house will grant determination to continue. Activities like Yog, or skills connected to spiritual practices are seen from here. Also short journeys to pilgrimage places.

4th house – This is the house of emotional stability and confort. If the mind is not disturbed by emotions the aspirant can progress faster. The place where the Sadhana will be performed is also important, a silent stable and energy-rich place helps. Rhythmic activities like breathing, pran-movement etc are linked to this house.

5th house – This is divine intelligence, discrimination and wisdom. You may practice but the success is granted here. Realising the fruits of mantra, tantra, yantra, dhayna, jaap etc is all to be seen from here. It also shows the spiritual progress that you have made in your past life and the merit you have with you now.

6th house – There are always distractions in the path of the aspirant. These are his ‘enemies’. Having a malefic in the 6th house is ideal, removing a thorn with a thorn works here.

7th house – This is the house of relationship. What is spiritual progress really? You are searching for that perfect relationship with yourself. In terms of energy the Kundalini has to reach Paramshiva, perfect union. The 7th house is also this balanced partnership and gains from it!

8th house – The house of secrets. A strong 8th house will encourage the aspirant to practice his sadhana in secret, using secret techniques and away from the public eye. The movement of prana and kundalini in the secret routes of the body are the domain of the 8th house. He will also undergo agonies and disappointments here, but it will finally gain the Bliss of Samadhi.

9th house – This is where you access the merit of your past lives and use it (potential seen from the 5th house). Long pilgrimages, learnings, worship, blessings from all the ones ‘senior’ to you. The deep teachings you will receive from your Guru. And after you gain your own experiences, it will represent the teachings that you will pass on to your students.

  • In this modern world, there is a ‘money price tag’ on knowledge. This is wrong. The only qualification for learning esoteric/spiritual knowledge is having a deep desire for it. If you have a deep heart-felt desire to learn, the Universe will send you a Teacher. If you are at the basic levels you will be taught basic foundations, if you have reached higher levels you will be taught deep stuff. But if you desire it, you will be taught it! And after learning, a feeling of gratitude is expected from you. If you remain ungrateful the lesson taught will not be fruitful for you.
  • And then the second part, if you know something and if you meet someone who genuinely desires to learn it, you must teach it.

Analysing Spirituality in the horoscope

10th house – This is the house of action and social recognition. If it is strong with benefics, the summary of the spiritual progress (from 1st house to the 9th house) will be used for social service, upliftment of the society and deeds (even misdeeds if malefic influences predominate). Some Gurus have huge followings and thus they have big names in the society. If malefics influence they might get put in jail too, infamy!

11th house – This is the house of gains. Here malefic/benefic planets thrive and give luck. So in a spiritual sense if the social recognition (10th house) gets converted into ego, donations, wealth or the pomp and show of religious authority then there is a good chance that this will ruin the entire scope of the chart. Then again as sadhana increases, siddhis will be offered to you, other beings will try to meet you etc, all acting as a trap perhaps! The last test.

12th house – The real house of Moksh. It will pull you away from them illusions of manifested reality and show you your huge self. Ketu associated here in some way will help. This house needs to be strong with aspects from benefics, so that the promise of spirituality of the chart culminates in Realisation.

Now this was a very very basic outline of the spiritual potential of all the houses. Details are to be seen from the divisional charts, D-9, and D-20. The more significant planets in spiritual context are of course Ketu, Venus and Jupiter. Then next the house owners of the 5th and 9th house are also significant and their placement and power to give results needs to be examined. All the planets will contribute in one way or the other so try and see patterns in the chart. Just a couple of examples for you to think on..

  • e.g. – Ascendant lord with Ketu esp in 1st, 5th, 9th (Dharma trikon) – will grant detachment from the ‘foundations’ of the manifested life. There will be nil ego and such a person is best suited for spiritual practice. He may be a failure in the physical life though with little sense of self, is out of place in social activities, a door-mat!
  • e.g. Analyse the dynamics of the Moksh trikon to get a sense of the energies of the moment of physical death. If the soul is able to access and exit via the Brahmanadi at the moment of death he has achieved Moksh. If the 8th, 12th and 4th houses are strong they can provide this opportunity. A Rahu or even a Mars in the 8th, or the owner of the 8th well placed, exchange of houses between the 12th and the 4th house owners.

Finally as timing is important too, look out for the periods/sub-periods of the house owners of the 1st, 5th and 9th houses primarily and the their synergy with the periods of Ketu, Jupiter and Venus. These periods will allow faster progress.

Generally you will not get a direct question from your client regarding ‘spirituality’, but this analysis is important as it gives you cues on what kind of a person is sitting in front of you and how you should counsel him.
