Ascendants and functional malefics

There was a question on the luckiest ascendant, so a quick post. This logic is based on the ‘functional malefic’ concept.

  • A planet who owns the 6th, 8th or 12th house counted from the ascendant sign, in a chart will act as a functional malefic for the horoscope. Especially so if its Mooltrikon sign falls in any of these turbulent houses.
  • Rahu and Ketu are functional malefics for all ascendant signs.
  • The lord of the 3rd house, if badly placed, will act as a functional malefic, so check out the individual horoscope for this factor. The 3rd house is a very typical house, can go either way.
  • The ascendant lord cannot overtly be a malefic for a chart, this is applicable for Aries, Libra and Aquarius ascendants. But if you get a chart with these ascendants, do evaluate the power of the ascendant lord to get a clear idea of what results he is going to confer. eg I have noticed that for Aries and Libra, the rate of change is very high, the personality goes through periodic cycles where there is severe disturbance, followed by a mini-melt-down, followed by an astonishing rebound and growth. For Aquarius ascendants, there is an undefinable loss of personality in the sense that they are always defined by their background groups. Alone, without his social support, an Aquarius ascendant seems a shadow of his self.

Ascendants and functional malefics

So this is the list of functional malefics for each ascendant sign,

  • Aries- Mercury, Rahu, Ketu
  • Taurus- Mars, Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu
  • Gemini- Rahu and Ketu
  • Cancer– Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu (possibly Mercury as per individual chart)
  • Leo– Moon, Rahu, Ketu
  • Virgo- Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu
  • Libra- Mercury, Rahu, Ketu (possibly Jupiter as per individual chart)
  • Scorpio– Venus, Rahu, Ketu
  • Sagittarius- Moon, Rahu, Ketu
  • Capricorn- Mercury, Sun, Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu
  • Aquarius- Moon, Mercury, Rahu, Ketu
  • Pisces- Sun, Saturn, Venus, Rahu, Ketu

Here we have followed the concept that the mool-trikon sign of the planet should fall in the 6th, 8th and 12th houses for it to be classified as a full blown functional malefic. But do remember that even if a planet’s regular sign falls in these 6th, 8th and 12th houses of turmoil, he can be an agent of pain in your life. (For Moon we do not consider his Mooltrikon sign Taurus, but his own sign Cancer)

  • I have added one possible malefic for Cancer ascendant, ie Mercury. And Jupiter as a potential malefic for Libra ascendant. Their mool-trikon sign falls in the 3rd house for these ascendants. The 3rd house is a rather typical house, can go either way so always check it from the individual chart.

If you look at this above list critically, Virgo and Pisces ascendants have a whopping five planets as clear-cut functional malefics. People born under these ascendant signs have more happening and traumatic events in their life. The influence of the three houses of turmoil is more in their lives and more unfavourable incidents associated with the keywords of these houses occur. Broadly diseases, debts, enemies, losses, stress, catastrophic transformation etc can occur with more frequency. (Cancer will fall in this list, if in the individual chart, Mercury is unable to give auspicious results. eg If Mercury is aspected/ conjoint Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu)

Now whenever the Sun is a functional malefic, you should analyse his proximity to Mercury too. Mercury is more often combust than other planets. So if in the chart, a malefic Sun consumes a beneficial/ neutral Mercury, Mercury is unable to give his results and you have one less positive/neutral planet in your chart. Second possibility is Venus being combust by a malefic Sun, as he too remains rather close to the Sun. This scenario is possible for Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces ascendants, so check this in the individual chart.

Second possibility is if the Sun combusts a functional malefic planet then he too becomes a malefic! The Sun can combust all the 5 tara-graha, but this possibility is more for Mercury and Venus as they are the inner planets, closer to the Sun.

  • Aries, Cancer, Libra and Aquarius have Mercury as a functional malefic so if such a malefic Mercury is swallowed up by the Sun in combustion, the Sun will take on all of Mercury’s attributes including his this functional malefic nature.
  • Then Scorpio and Pisces have Venus as a functional malefic so if the Sun combusts a malefic Venus, he too will become a composite Sun+Venus malefic power.

In the horoscope, check if the ascendant lord is influenced by these functional malefics. This reduces his power to adjust your personality and your environment with each other. Also check if the birth Moon is under malefic influence, as this directly affects the mind, emotions and mental processes.

  • eg for Cancer ascendant, Moon (ascendant lord) conjoint Jupiter is not a very auspicious combination. Even if Jupiter is considered to be beneficial, he is a functional malefic for this ascendant.

Taurus, Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants, have four planets as functional malefics. (Libra can come in this category if in the specific chart, Jupiter is under the influence of even more malefics and is incapable of giving auspicious results.) And Aries, Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius ascendants, have three functional malefic planets. Finally Gemini ascendant has only two, ie the common Rahu/ Ketu as the functional malefic energies in the chart.

So I would say that Gemini ascendant is the luckiest ascendant to have, as it practically has no functional malefics. Except Rahu and Ketu who are astral planets entrusted with the express job of creating turbulence in our life. The remaining 7 planets are either neutral or beneficial so this ascendant has a relatively smoother life compared to the remaining eleven signs of the zodiac.

The toughest would be Cancer, Virgo or Pisces ascendants.

  • Virgo and Pisces because of the five planets who work directly as functional malefics.
  • Cancer because he has four (five, if Mercury also afflicted), but these include Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, the slowest planets. If something goes wrong in a Cancer’s life, it can take ages to first suffer through the problem and then ages to recover from it.

Ascendants and functional malefics

Now a bit more on how to use this concept.

  • If the functional malefic in the birth chart is on the exact central degree at the house he is placed in, he exerts more negative influence on the matters of this house. eg if your birth rising degree is 3deg Leo, the middle of the 1st house is at 3deg Leo. Look out for the planets transiting around 3deg in any sign and their effects on you.
  • If the functional malefic is closely conjunct or aspects any other birth planet, he will affect their power to give auspicious results.
  • In transit too, these planets give their worst results when they are passing through the center of a house or conjunct/ aspecting any birth planet.

Finally one more aspect of this list must be considered. Check which ascendant has slow moving or fast moving planets as its functional malefics.

Leo and Sagittarius have only Moon as their functional malefic. Moon is the fastest planet going at 2.25days/sign. So the trials in their life will pop in suddenly, maybe an acute attack of some problem in life and then as suddenly pop out. There can be more frequent problems as the Moon transits around the zodiac in about 28days. But perhaps this is better as you do not have to endure under a problem for years.

  • eg If you know that the next 2.25days are going to be typical, you can do something about it, eg re-arrange your work schedule etc or just sit through knowing that it will end in 2.25days.

Aries, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius have the Sun, Moon, Mercury or Venus as their functional malefic. These ‘inner planets’ are also fast moving, approx a month in a sign. So the problems faced by these people do not last for long, though may have a yearly sort of periodicity. Here a problem can last for about a month (might resurface maybe a year later if the dasha/other transits permit.) However note the combustions of these planets in your birth chart and in transit which can modify results.

  • eg If a Cancer ascendant at birth has Mercury conjoint Sun and both aspected by Saturn. Then those periods when Mercury goes combust in the skies (three times a year) wil, inflate his ego, affect his thought processes, make him temporarily selfish, unable to accepts others views, create even more misunderstandings because of this, might cause severe fights with siblings or teammates or neighbours, or extended family members, losses in trade etc be especially problematic for him.

For Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces ascendant people, the outer planets, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn figure in the list. These take longer times to transit signs, Mars can take 2-6 months, Jupiter 1 yr and Saturn 2.6yrs, per sign. So for these people, troubles in life will last for a longer period, they will have to endure under problematic situations for months/ years. And recovery from these episodes will be slow. However periodicity will be lesser. Mars completes one round of the zodiac in 2yrs, Jupiter in 12yrs and Saturn in 30yrs.

  • I have mentioned in my previous posts, that Cancer ascendants should take special care and try to focus on their spiritual growth than material objects during the next few years. Now you see, Jupiter, Ketu, Saturn, are/ will be transiting their 6th, 7th, 8th houses back to back. Two houses of turmoil, 6th and 8th and 7th is a very cryptic house, decisions taken here convert to karma very quickly.

You must have read about functional malefics in your studies on astrology, so this is how you gain more information using this concept. Astrology is about seeing patterns and linking them together with common sense and a bit of intuition. You must study your sample horoscopes of your family/ friends and see how your ideas and concepts really play out in life. This is how you learn with every chart you read.

Ascendants and functional malefics

Wealth combinations, Indu Lagna, Ekadashamsha

Everyone wants wealth and is interested in how much money can be made in life. Generally there are two things which influence money gain in your life. One is the wealth making (dhan yog) combinations in your horoscope and second is your efforts in that direction. Sudden wealth is also possible when the potential of the birth chart, the ekadashamsha, the D11 and the dasha/ transits all come together. A very basic post to pique your interest.

Birth horoscope

From the birth horoscope the important houses are the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th. These and their lords should be powerful. (Check out their condition in the Navamsha and their Ashtakvarga scores). If these are well placed the person does not face any money crunch in life.

  • The 11th house is also the house of gains and you can get some pointers on how this gain will be utilized by checking out the influences on the 11th house lord. Eg If this planet is in an earthy sign he will allow investments in fixed assets.
  • Further there should be some interactions among all these. Eg, if the 2nd and 11th lord are placed together in the 5th or 9th house it will give significant amount of wealth. Or if all the four lords of these houses are together in the 5th or 9th houses, it will give immense wealth.

Indu lagna

The Indu lagna is often used as a short cut. If you feel that reading the divisional charts is difficult then you can cross check the potential of the birth chart like this. First a small math to locate the Indu lagna house. Eg Libra ascendant, Moon in Pisces (This is a combination from one of my clients, is rich, has got wealth from the parents, from the spouse and has self-earned wealth too).

  • Step 1 – Find out your 9th house from the rising sign/ ascendant, your regular 9th house. Note its sign and thus its planetary ruler. In our example, 9th from ascendant sign is Gemini ruled by Mercury
  • Step 2 – Now find out the 9th house from the birth moon sign. Note its sign and thus its planetary ruler too. In our example, 9th from birth Moon is Scorpio ruled by Mars.
  • Step 3 – Here is a list of values, (Sun = 30, Moon = 16, Mercury = 8, Venus = 12, Mars = 6,  Jupiter = 10 and Saturn = 1) Add the values of the planets you have identified eg Mercury + Mars = 8 + 6 = 14. Divide this sum by 12, eg 14 divided by 12. The Quotient is 1 and the Remainder is 2. We discard the quotient and use the retainer figure further.
  • Step 4 – in our example the remainder is 2. So count the 2nd house from the birth Moon in Pisces. So counted second is Aries. Thus Aries is called the Indu Lagna or the wealth generating ascendant for this example. (If the remainder is Zero. Then the house counted twelfth from the birth Moon is the Indu lagna. If the remainder is 1, the house occupied by the birth Moon itself is the Indu lagna.)

The Indu lagna can add to your understanding of the wealth prospects of your birth chart. Analyse the Indu lagna like this. Reorient the birth chart so that the Indu lagna sign is seen as the first house. So you have one new chart with the Indu lagna as the first house. Keep your birth chart and this new chart both in front of you. So in our example we will consider the sign Aries as the first house and read like this for the new Indu lagna chart,

  • First of all, the sign Aries, planets placed in it or aspecting it, Mars and influences on him etc should be positive. Aries sign and Mars planet should be placed well. If the Indu lagna and its owner are well placed you will never want for money in life. Mars also rules the 2nd house in the basic birth chart. (There is a pattern emerging linking the basic birth chart and the Indu lagna chart)
  • Then the signs placed 2nd and 11th from the Indu lagna should be poised to give auspicious results and more importantly their owner planets should be strongly placed. This is the most important condition for generating wealth. In our example it is Taurus and Aquarius owned by Venus and Saturn. Now if you compare this with the basic birth chart, the ascendant lord himself is Venus and Saturn is the Yogkarak the biggest benefic, also the owner of the 5th house. (Venus and Saturn are now both playing an important role in the birth chart and the Indu lagna chart. Also Venus is the natural ruler of Luxuries/Relationships and Saturn of Luck/Money.)
  • This wealth generation will be augmented if the signs placed 4th, 7th, 10th counted from the Indu lagna are capable of positive results. In our example these are Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. (Cancer is the 10th house of the birth chart, Libra/Venus is the birth ascendant and Capricorn/Saturn is the 4th house in the birth chart. I hope you are seeing the patterns.)
  • Planets placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th houses from the Indu lagna are not considered favourable for the finances of the horoscope.

The 11th Divisional chart, Rudramsha or Ekadashamsha

The Ekadashamsha, the 11th divisional chart is used for checking out the entire wealth potential of the individual.

  • ‘Wealth’ is a word seen differently by different people. So if you have benefic planets, exalted, in friendly signs, with good Navamsha and Ashtakvarga positions naturally you will conclude that these are positive influences. The person will earn money and also respect in society, he will earn by legit means and earning money will give real ‘gain’.
  • But if you have planets which are debilitated, weak ashtakvarga scores, malefic, otherwise not very favourable but receive a benefic aspect from even a single powerful planet, then they also can generate sudden wealth. But such wealth might be gained by underhand means, by going against the conscience, or through crime etc. You might not be able to call it ‘auspicious’ in the real sense. Eg someone’s son dies and he gets the life insurance. Or he financial crimes and gets money.

The rules for seeing the divisional charts are more or less similar (I have written about navamsha analysis). Divisional charts are first and foremost linked to the ‘signs’. To interpret, you have to have the birth chart and divisional chart both open before you. Sometimes it is easier to work with paper/pencil than software. Listing out just two simple steps, which any beginner can attempt.

Step 1 – open your basic birth chart and see which signs occupy your 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses. Now open the D-11, check if any auspicious planets get placed in these signs here in the D11. These planets will add to the ‘gain’ possibilities.

Step 2 – open your birth chart and see which signs occupy the 6th, 8th, 12th houses. Then open the D-11 and check if there are any planets placed in these signs here in the D11. These planets will not give pleasing results with respect to ‘gain’.

  • eg Suppose in the D-11, Venus is in the sign of the 6th house, but he is strong in the Ashtakvarga, so this might mean that the person might gain from illegal means as a part of his profession, he might take bribes or expensive gifts.
  • eg Suppose in the D-11, Mercury is in the sign of the 8th house, but he is strong in the Navamsha. He might give gain eg legacies from the deaths of siblings.
  • eg Suppose in the D-11, Moon is in the sign of the 12th house. Suppose that he is just average in the Ashtakvarga or the Navamsha. Then such a person might make money but will be unable to save significantly

Evaluate the D-11 to know how the potential of the 11th house of gains unfolds. A powerful D11, can indicate easy gains without struggles. Eg lottery, stock markets, legacies, speculation, gambling etc, the exact source/nature of gain will depend on the connected signs/ planets and their dignities. Eg 11th house if connected with the 10th house in some way will give easy gains through profession, easy promotions, etc.

Look out for patterns, if you get 2 or more patterns giving the same interpretation, it is more likely to happen. Jyotish is all about patterns. We use so many divisional charts, tables, dashas, transits and stuff so that we are sure about what we are predicting. If an event is about to happen it will reflect everywhere. One single combination does not make a reading.

Wealth combinations, Indu Lagna, Ekadashamsha

As usual the events will be triggered by significant Dasha periods. Do not skip this step. Birth chart, Dasha and transits are all equally important. The promise of the birth horoscope is made real only when the appropriate time arrives. Dasha periods belonging to planets/ signs connected to the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses are capable of generating wealth. So during these times keep an eye out for any likely opportunity.

For transits, draw your basic birth chart on a paper. With a different coloured pen write the current transits in it. I know that software does this, but there is no substitute for pen/ paper. In the transiting planets, check for the following at the very least. More planets transiting in the Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th 10th) and Kona (5th 9th) houses. Saturn should be transiting in the 2nd 5th 9th or 11th houses. And Jupiter also should be transiting in the 2nd 5th 9th or 11th houses or aspecting the lord of any of these houses. If any of these patterns exist, then expect a sudden gain sometime soon.

‘Wealth’ is a very dicey proposition to predict. My perception on wealth can differ from what the client wants. But this much is quite sufficient to predict periods when sudden gain of wealth, money, property etc is possible. We have combined 4-5 techniques of basic birth chart, navamsha, ashtakvarga, ekadashamsha, Indu lagna and tried to link all this with the Dasha and transits so our prediction will be reasonably accurate.

Ketu + Saturn in Sagittarius 2019, implications

This is a continued post on the present Saturn retrograde, April 2019 to Sept 2019, in Sagittarius (140 days retrograde motion from 30th Apr to 18th Sept).

Apart from the basic analysis, the major concern is that Ketu the headlessSaturn the agent of karma are together. Ketu is fiery and separative, Saturn is airy and restrictive. Ketu is in perpetual retrograde motion so rewinds and replays the experiences of your life so that you can extract the maximum learning from it. Ketu is intense on the psychological and inner spiritual levels. And Saturn has become retrograde, thus both are travelling in the same direction from Earth’s point of reference. It is going to be quite difficult for Sagittarius and especially Purvashadha born individuals during this period.

Ketu + Saturn in Sagittarius 2019, implications

During this retrograde period, both the planets will be on exact same degree on 1st May when Saturn will be in retrograde motion in Purvashadha nakshatra. And again on 28th Sept when he will become direct again and again conjunct Ketu exactly again in Purvashadha nakshatra/lunar mansion. People with ascendant or moon sign in Gemini (7th from Sagittarius), Libra (11th from Sagittarius) and Aquarius (3rd from) should be extremely careful on these 2 days. Take no big decisions. Observe the events on these days as they can have life-time impacts on you.

If this much was not enough, there are more planetary influences in the mix.

  1. Mars will be travelling in Gemini during 7th May- 21st June 2019, he is in forward motion. (Mars is aggression, sometimes misplaced confidence and temper, a fiery combination in the present Gemini/Sagittarius axis.) He is also going to be combust for a bit (10th Jul – 14th Oct) when he passes near the Sun.
  2. Mercury will enter Gemini on 1st June, go briefly retrograde in Cancer – Gemini from 8th – 31st July 2019. (Thought processes, analytical mind and intelligence may get twisted.) He is also going to be combust for a bit (8th Jul – 2nd Aug) when he passes near the Sun.
  3. Sun is going to be with Rahu the trickster in Gemini from mid-June to mid-July. (Misplaced ego, pride and temper may cause problems.)
  4. Then Venus too is going to be with Rahu in Gemini from 30th Jun to 23rd Jul in forward motion. (Relationships and wisdom under fire.) He will then become combust for a bit (25th Jul – 10th Sept) when he passes near the Sun.
  5. And finally Jupiter is currently retrograde in Scorpio, he started his retrograde motion from Sagittarius in Apr, so till he changes his direction in Aug 2019, the events happening in the Sagittarius-Gemini axis will influence him too. (Wisdom may be lacking and selfishness may predominate your actions.)
  6. And as always, the Moon will do his 2.25 day transits over each sign, so will traverse this Gemini/Sagittarius axis twice every month.

Whenever these planets are going to be in Gemini they are going to be with Rahu and aspected by the Saturn+Ketu combination from Sagittarius (7th from Gemini). Things can get very volatile.

So buckle down and open your charts, go through what every planet means to you in your chart and especially what the Gemini/Sagittarius axis means to you. Almost everyone is going to get hit, in someway or the other, during these few months. A few tips to help you cope,

  1. No big decisions, try to continue as you had started during Apr 2019 and try to continue this till Sept 2019 till things somewhat normalise.
  2. If the currently retrograde planet is retrograde in your birth chart too, you have an opportunity to clear out your karmic balance. It might be painful in the physical context, but will help on the spiritual levels.
  3. If you are already ill in some body part, take care and your medicines on time.
  4. Try to control your mind, emotions and do not lose your temper. There will be ample provocation from the agents of the Gemini/Sagittarius axis in your chart.
  5. Do some spiritual practice everyday for 10 mins at least, anything that you are drawn to. Give yourself this time you are going to need it.

This is a very typical period where the main slow moving graha, Saturn and Jupiter are retrograde both at the same time. Then Saturn interacting with Rahu/Ketu and all the remaining planets interacting with Rahu in sequence, and they are also going retrograde themselves and combust too in sequence. Do analyse your horoscope, am sure everyone can at least try matching keywords at the very basic. At all times try to keep calm, disciplined, be patient and think twice before you act/react.

As always, this period too will pass.

Ketu + Saturn in Sagittarius 2019, implications

(There was a question on the current transits thus these two posts. I hope that they help you in analysing your charts and being more prepared during this period. I have written more about the real nature of these planets in my earlier posts, which you can read by clicking the pink colored word links. I cannot do a personal detailed transit report, but I think I have written enough for you to work out things for yourself.)

Current Rahu/Ketu transit in Gemini/Sagittarius

This is a brief post on analysing transits. I have written a previous post on transits of Rahu/Ketu here. They are in perpetual retrograde motion so as to replay the lessons of your life, this enables you to learn them very deeply. Rahu/Ketu work intensely on the psychological and inner spiritual levels. Now the recent transit (March 2019 to September 2020) of Rahu/Ketu into the 3rd/9th sign Gemini owned by Mercury and Sagittarius owned by Jupiter has already started giving startling events around the world. Gemini and Sagittarius are quite suitable environments for Rahu/ Ketu, some astrologers consider them exalted here. Thus their effects are going to be very intense and extreme. Rahu-Ketu work at the deepest levels, through sudden and unpredictable events.

Consider the world events and also your personal events which occurred 18 yrs ago, between 2000-2002. Go back in your life 18yrs to evaluate what had happened, what was its effect on you physically, emotionally and spiritually. Something similar will happen again.

The last time, 18yrs ago from July 2000 to Feb-2002, world events included, the dot-com bubble burst, Concorde flight crash and the company’s bankruptcy, launch of Wikipedia, first iPod launched by Apple, Mir space station brought down, the world’s first space tourist, hijacked planes, terrorist attacks on World Trade Center etc, deaths of thousands, thus mindset of the world changed permanently, a continuing ‘war on terrorism’ which strangely continues till date, Euro notes/coins entered public circulation as a powerful new currency, cyborg tech successfully developed, etc. So you had your Mercury, Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu keywords being reflected quite nicely back then, and somewhat similar things will happen now.

Rahu in Gemini, the natural 3rd house of the zodiac will cause the following, use the keywords and interlink them to get these readings.

  1. Rahu in the house of Mercury will cause anxiety, depression, addictions, suicidal thoughts and other psychological problems caused by ‘over-stimulation’ and ‘over-thinking’. Mercury is highly adaptable and responds to events quite successfully, but rapid and high intensity changes cause him to burn out.
  2. Increase in risky behaviour triggered in same-age groups causing accidents. E.g a same-age/family/friends group goes for an adventure trail, trek, picnic etc and gets into an accident.
  3. Teenagers are very impressionable individuals and under the influence of Rahu will be involved in risky activities maybe crime or drugs etc. Disguises and concealments. Parents/teachers unable to communicate effectively with their teenage kids.
  4. The flow of information, intelligence, database management, information analysis will be affected. In short there will be misinformation and misunderstandings on all levels. Cheating in financial sectors; banking sector will be hit with scams and cybercrime, people will lose trust in banks.
  5. Pollution caused by information networks will reach dangerous levels, this will include subtle radiation to discordant noises. The world will be a noisier place with all shouting for attention.
  6. Increase diseases related chest, heart and lungs. Also incurable and strange diseases will increase. Faulty diagnosis will increase and inappropriate medication given.

Rahu will conjunct Mars, both malefics during May-June 2019. Severe results again with Mars intensifying Rahu with his aggression, competitiveness, rage and high energy at all levels possible, tempers will remain high and will snap. e.g. wars, road rage, local fights, raised voices in the house etc. (Mars will aspect Ketu too during this period, thus fueling his energies too.)

Current Rahu/Ketu transit in Gemini/SagittariusNow Ketu in Sagittarius. Here we already have Saturn and he will move out into Capricorn in Jan 2020. So till then, Ketu and Saturn both malefics are together. Ketu has become even more powerful with extremely increased ability to give his ‘separative’ results. So be prepared for separations at every level, mental, physical spiritual. (Saturn will be aspecting Rahu during this period, adding to his energy, one result could be that people will take calculated risks.)

  1. Foundations of life for many will be shaken and torn apart. This may mean more divorces, or abandonment issues, teachers going rogue, students not learning etc. Priests/pandits will not perform well, and rituals done may not bear fruit. People will question established religions and rituals.
  2. These life shaking detachment type of events will turn several to internal spirituality. (more after Jan 2020 when just Jupiter and Ketu are together, Saturn moves on)
  3. Universities and institutes of higher learning, religious schools, monasteries etc will fail to perform or come into disrepute. Temples, monasteries etc may be physically demolished even.
  4. The patrons, peer groups and paternal figures will not cooperate, create tensions and abandon. Those who are supposed to guide will not. Guidance will come from inside only if people listen.
  5. If you have any pitr/ancestor related problems due, they can erupt. 9th sign is linked to them too.
  6. People will be disconnected from religion, humanitarian views, philosophy and will act selfishly and without fear of spiritual repercussions/Karma.
  7. Jupiter enters his own sign Sagittarius for 2 months, in Mar-April 2019 giving some relief. But he is moving forward/retrograde going back into Scorpio. However he will then transit into Sagittarius from Nov 2019 onwards giving his direction also to the headless Ketu and make the restrictions of Saturn a bit bearable.
  8. Feb 2020 – Mar 2020 will see Mars with Ketu so again a double dose of aggression and martian energies which will generally be misdirected (headless Ketu’s influence). Jupiter’s influence will be able to set things right sooner though.

These were very general readings. For analysing your own personal chart I have written about it in my earlier post. But here is a quick recap

  1. Your birth chart. Check out where Rahu is placed, which house, which sign and with which planets. He will link his ‘overreach and then fall on the face’, trend with each of their results too.
  2. If your birth chart has a complete or a partial kaal sarpa, the effects of Rahu/Ketu are more intensified.
  3. Check out which Mahadasha/Main period and antardasha/sub-period you are on. What are the general background influences that you can expect. If you are undergoing periods of Ketu or Rahu be careful. (Or Saturn, Mars or Sun, the natural malefics when they conjunct with Rahu/Ketu in transit together)
  4. Which houses in your chart are Rahu/Ketu occupying during their transit? i.e Where are Gemini/Sagittarius placed? This will tell you which karma you are going to be pulled towards/Rahu, and which aspects of life you are going to be separated from/Ketu.
    • (Ketu transiting in 4th house has caused deaths of the mother for 2 of my clients last year. For another, he sold off his ancestral farmlands).
    • (Rahu in 10th for one client ensured that his father came to live with him permanently etc)
  5. If your age is the multiples of 18 yrs, you will undergo Rahu/Ketu return where they occupy the same position as your birth chart. Extreme karmic events will unfold.
  6. Now during the overall 18 month Rahu/Ketu transit, there will be short term transits of the other planets, Sun, Moon etc. So look out for the eclipses and periods around them. They will change the results of Sun/Moon and depending on their positions in your transit chart give extreme results.
  7. The other planets will also transit over these Rahu/Ketu for shorter periods, so their results will also be affected by the Rahu/Ketu presence/conjunction. Especially be alert during the conjunction of malefics in transit.

Gemini and Sagittarius will obviously affected badly. Next intensity is for Cancer and Capricorn, these folks should take special care of their health. Scorpio and Taurus will also face typical times. If your ascendant falls in these signs you should take care of your physical body/environment, if the Moon falls in these then your emotional status will be out of balance. (These signs fall in the dushamsthana 6-8-12 axis from the transiting position of Rahu/Ketu).

In case there are problems, often a 108 repeat of the beej mantras of Rahu/Ketu on Tuesdays/Saturdays will help in balancing out their energies.

Ashtapadmadala chakra for transits

I have written a post on how to use this Chakra here for a basic analysis. Do go through it first.

Now let’s use this Chakra for analysing transits. I am using the same example from my previous post, a birth chart visualised as a Chakra.

birth ashtapadmadalaYou have analysed this basic birth details in the previous post. And you want to find out the results of transits using this system. I always give a 25% weightage to the results of transits and 75% value to the basic birth chart. The main power/ potential is from the birth positions and the transits can only modify/ activate these. Transits with the Dasha however are quite important for timing time events (post here). The slowest moving planets Saturn (2.5yrs in a sign), Rahu/Ketu (1.5yrs in a sign) and Jupiter (1yr in a sign) set the tone which is then modified by the faster moving Mars, Venus, Sun and Mercury. Moon transits 1 sign in 2.25 days so is not used much to time events except in medical emergencies.

Suppose the planets in transit are as follows,

  1. Moon is in Ashleysha
  2. Ascendant degree/Lagna in Aradra
  3. Sun in Hasta
  4. Mercury in Chitra
  5. Venus in Jeyshtha
  6. Mars in Swati
  7. Jupiter in Abhijit
  8. Saturn in Shravan
  9. Rahu in Uttara-ashadha
  10. Ketu in Punarvasu

So now you have to superimpose the transiting planet details in the birth chakra. I have used green color to write the transits. This is an imaginary example with random planets positioned. (I don’t like using charts of actual people, I think analysing actual people like this adversely affects their 9th house)

transit ashtapadmadala

Now look at the new positions of the planetary forces and do a similar basic analysis as you did for their birth positions earlier (not repeating the same points here again). Now the additional points for transits,

  1. If the benefics are transiting closer to the center of the chart, their energies are more available for you to use. Pay attention to their direction of movement. If they are moving inwards their energies are supporting your personal development. If their movement is outwards, you are projecting more of their energies on your surroundings and other people.
  2. Malefics transiting in closer to the center of the chakra cause more drain on your self.
  3. And now try to analyse the interaction of the birth planets and the transiting planets. For example,
    • The birth Mars has a transiting Ketu on it. The basic tendency for aggressive fiery behaviour is now enhanced by this ‘headless’ graha’s influence.
    • Venus has entered the innermost stambha boundary, It is favourably placed in a Kendra axis in the birth chakra too. So while he transits this Stambha period his energies will be very high and easily available for you. You will see a growth in resources, balance, beauty, partnerships, gain and spirituality.
    • Mercury is transiting the birth Mercury, in the direction governed by the Energy of destruction, Nirriti. So you will need to be careful of the communication, trade and financial angle in your life.

This transit chakra is very useful especially in medical emergencies. These clients are already worried and tense. So taking time to check this simple chakra is helpful in coming to a more accurate conclusion.

  1. You get a general idea from the basic birth chart.
  2. Then superimpose the running periods, dashas to get a broad framework for the present time.
  3. The add the transits to the basic birth chart.
  4. Now draw the chakra for the birth time and superimpose the transiting planets on it.
    • In this mark the positions of the regular malefics, owners of the dushamsthanas
    • Mark the position of marak planets
    • The closer all these are to the stambha/innermost core the more serious is the emergency.

This is a very tiny exercise to get you interested in using the ‘Chakra’ diagrams too. In astrology there are several chakras which are used. As these are very visual they are rather easy to understand. You can try and use this chakra for more information in addition to the normal superimposed birth and transit positions chart that you draw.

It is possible that some astrology software calculate this ashtapadmadala chakra, but just pay attention to which planet it is using as the base nakshatra. Here we have used the Moon’s nakshatra as the base (position 1). This variant of the Chakra is suitable for all sorts of analysis. Especially if the client is past 49yrs this Moon nakshatra chakra will give the most accurate readings. However you can draw the chakra using the other planets nakshatras, or the ascendant degree nakshatra as a start point, you can even go anti-clockwise, depending on what you want to find out from your planetary forces!
