Saturn’s energies and you

Am sure you would wonder why would anyone want to increase the energies of Saturn in their life. Well, we are not increasing/decreasing anything, we are just trying to balance it and make effective use of it.

Wherever Saturn is placed, he puts restrictions and constrictions on the keywords of that house. If badly placed, then he can cause quite a lot of problems, from physical aging, to problems in social identity, profession, money flow, problems in the residence, nameless fears, no comforts, pessimistic attitude, emotional restrictions, no rest, no sleep etc.  He is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries (the exact opposite for his father the Sun). However after he matures at the age of 36yrs, his actions become more understandable. Sun, Moon  and Mars are his enemies, MercuryVenus, Rahu are friends with him and Jupiter and Ketu are sort of neutral to him. He is a natural malefic and has the ability to strike fear.

  • Saturn can perform generally well in houses 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th, but this is a very generic statement. You will need to check what aspects he is under and what houses he owns too. E.g. Saturn in the 8th house will give a long life, i.e. he restricts death, but if there are other influences he might make it difficult to leave the aged body! More malefics influence him, more problems will he cause.
  • Saturn in the 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th houses generally gives troubling results unless balanced out by some benefic influences. (One exception here is Libra ascendant, if Saturn is in Libra, as yogkarak and exalted, he can even grant Moksh if other planets support.)
  • If you have Saturn aspecting/conjoint the Sun or the Moon take special care of your eyes.

The Saturn beej mantra is, ‘Om praang preeng prowng sah Shanischarya namah’, which can be recited once, thrice or 108 times on Saturdays.

Saturn's energies and you

There are a few things that you can do to regulate and balance Saturn’s energies.

  1. You can add the colors, smells/fragrances and food tastes linked to Saturn in your life. Don’t overwhelm yourself, just a touch here and there.
  2. Take care of your teeth, brush with astringent toothpastes.
  3. Also take care of your bones, take your calcium and eat a healthy diet.
  4. If you drink milk, do not drink buffalo milk, stick to cow milk.
  5. Try to get an oil based massage once in a while. If it is not possible do a self-massage, apply your favourite massage oil to your feet, hands and head etc wherever you can easily and then shower.
  6. Avoid non vegetarian food and alcohol. It may be impossible but then if you can try to limit yourself to just fish for the protein and limit alcohol intake for only at social events.
  7. Feed ravens once in a while, give them chapati or bread something made of grains. (If ravens are not available near where you live then next option is crows)
  8. Do not lie and do not cheat. Such an important lesson, our teachers taught us when we were children. Also avoid taking up professions where you are required to lie all the time! e.g. lawyers? (If you are already a lawyer, help a genuine poor, blind or aged client free of charge once in a while).

And the kindest things that you can do are these acts of charity. These will help your own soul as well as bring real happiness to those who are forgotten by society. Do this with a genuine intention of being of service with love and respect.

  1. Call up your aged parents or grandparents once a week, or run some errands for them if you get the time.
  2. If you can afford it, maybe once a year, give a treat, sweets or fruits to an old age home. If it is not possible then take your own aged parents or grandparents for a special treat once in a while. Be compassionate.
  3. Specifically try to help out blind people or aged people. It can be as simple as helping them on the street or giving up your seat in the bus.

Saturn is the energy of Karma, you have to pay-back and rebalance, there is no option sometimes. So some pain will be involved. Interpreting Saturn’s role in your horoscope is very typical. You do not like the lessons that he teaches, he can be quite harsh. So try to bring into yourself the qualities of responsibility, silence, self-discipline, detachment and objectivity, in short ‘grow up’. Know that you have to give back, if you can give it back gracefully, karma will be more easily satisfied.

Saturn's energies and you

Use the Moon’s energy

Tiny behavioural shifts leading to the change you desire. And there was a request for more of this sort of stuff. Your behaviour is linked to the planetary configuration you chose at birth. You get a few assets and a few challenges. So where are your assets in the chart?

  1. First and foremost your mind, the Moon, how you perceive events. A well placed Moon will keep you happy internally. If you get caught in a bad situation you will bounce back sooner because your mind supports you.
  2. Second the ascendant sign. This is your entire personality and your environment. If this sign is strong with benefics placed here it gives an advantage in life.
  3. And then the ascendant lord, the owner of the ascendant sign. His placement is important because this determines how your personality and environment interact. How comfortable you are in your body. If this planet is placed badly you will always be in conflict, either because of the body related issues or the stress that your environment will put on you.

If these 3 are well placed, your life becomes relatively more comfortable and manageable. About 50% of your personality is created by these 3 forces, if you engage in activities which are as per their keywords you will feel more at ease. But then there are a few challenges which we have been born with.

Use the Moon's energy

Now let’s see how we can channelise the energies of the moon in our life. The Mantra of the Moon is ‘Om Shraang shreeng shrowng sah chandraya namah’, you can recite this once, thrice or 108 times weekly on Mondays or monthly on full-moon days.

  1. On every full moon night, take a cup full of milk and leave it under the light of the full moon for 5 minutes then drink it. If you don’t like milk, use water.
  2. Do Tratak /staring at the full moon. This is to be done very briefly, not more than  1 minute.
  3. If you keep track of the phases of the moon, the second day after the no-moon day/amavasya is especially potent. If you can sight the crescent moon, it will be visible just after sunset on the western horizon. Fold your hands in a Namaskar and recite the beej mantra of the moon, ‘OM shraang shreeng shroung sah chandraya namah 3 times. Or just ‘Om chandraya namah’ 3 times. Feel his energy entering you.
  4. The full moon (Kojagiri pournima) in the month of Ashwin, (generally October), when the moon is in Pisces and Sun is in Libra, is the night when the moon is at his maximum power. On this night we stay out in the moonlight for the whole night, keep milk under the moonlight and drink it. This is once a year.
  5. Or if not any things else, the easiest thing is, on full moon nights express your gratitude to him, standing in his light for a few minutes.

Now for some fun things that you can do without getting involved with mantra, tantra yantra! Simple things done with a sense of gratitude and love.

  1. On Mondays, start your day with one spoon of curd mixed with a little sugar. This is one of the best ways to balance the moon energies.
  2. If you feel inclined you can add the colors, smells/fragrances and food tastes linked to the Moon in your life. Just a bit here and there, don’t overwhelm yourself.
  3. Wear silver jewellery, maybe a bracelet or a kada?
  4. If you live in a particularly hot location, you can try putting a clean silver coin in your water bottle and drink the water throughout the day.
  5. Women should wear silver toe rings (second toe of both feet) and if possible silver anklets too, these will keep your monthly cycle regular.
  6. Whenever you cross a river (flowing water not a lake) or the sea, toss a coin in it with a sense of gratitude.
  7. And finally if you can afford it once a year, give a treat to a small girl (less than 10yrs of age). If you have a small daughter, or a niece or some small girl in your neighbourhood. Either lunch or sweets or if you can donate some fruits or something to small girls in an orphanage. Give this treat with the intention that you are offering it to the Divine Goddess herself and request Her blessing.

The Moon is a natural benefic in the horoscope and sees no other planet as his enemy. However MercurySaturn, Venus, Rahu and Ketu tend to make him uncomfortable. Moon aspected/conjoint with Saturn induces fear, with Mercury can lead to psychological problems, with Venus can make one lose his moral compass, with Rahu he is insatiable desiring and ultimately falling on his face, and Ketu with his trademark detachment can have devastating effects on the mind. The Moon is then is quite friendly with the SunJupiter and Mars. He is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio. Wherever he is placed, he desires comfort, security, nourishment, care and maternal ‘needy’ love from the keywords of that house.

  • Moon placed in the dushamsthana (6th, 8th, 12th) is never comfortable as he never gets his brand of emotional love from these houses of turmoil.
  • Another typical position is the 3rd house. This is ordinarily ok, but if aspected by malefics this person will try to dominate others by attacking their emotions!
  • The Moon performs quite well in the other houses, unless aspected/conjoint with malefics.

You can increase the energy of the Moon by mediation on a feminine aspect of the Divine, Devi, the Shri yantra or any other feminine deity from your family, faith etc whom you believe in. ‘God’ is actually ‘energy’, so gender related words are rather meaningless, feminine here means to cultivate an attitude of being receptive, introspective, contemplative, peaceful, nurturing etc and actively work for it.

Use the Moon's energy

(Do you ever wonder at our Vedic deities all depicted with the gold crowns with the disc of gold. Well, if you have ever seen the aura of a real enlightened Guru, his head chakras shine like that, the rest of the body may be white, pearly, gold-silver, but the head is covered with a gold colored aura which projects in shimmery rays! Even you, if you have been doing your spiritual practice regularly, and have had a particularly satisfying Dhyan session, your head’s aura shines just as if you have put on a gold crown.)

Use the Sun’s energy

The two luminaries, the Sun and the Moon are our eyes, we ‘see’ because of them, in more ways than one. Their energies resonate with the Creator and the Creation. And there is a very easy way of ensuring that you have an adequate supply of their energies in your life.

The Sun is considered a natural malefic in Vedic astrology. He represents the ‘ego‘. He is friendly with Moon, Jupiter and Mars. And is enemies with Saturn, Venus, Rahu and Ketu. He is exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra. Which ever house he is placed in, he tends to increase the ego, selfishness and self-referential behaviour related to its keywords. Often there are undercurrents and ego-clashes in your interactions with the environment and agents represented by this house.

  • Sun in houses 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 11th is ok. There will be some issues but unless the Sun is under even more malefic conditions, this will be ultimately ok.
  • In 7th he can cause serious ego clashes with husband/wife/business partners which can cause irreparable losses in personal life and businesses.
  • Sun in 10th house is considered to be a rather bad placement too, 10th house is natural father, Sun is also the father, but Sun in 10th can give ego-clashes with the father/boss which can cause problems in your life/social position/profession etc.
  • Sun in 6th, 8th and 12th can function well if he is aspected by benefics. He will create problems in these houses of turmoil, dushamsthana, but he will also give the energy to successfully deal with them.
  • Generally Sun conjunct Mercury is quite common, this is a good combination and the Sun enhances the powers of Mercury. Even if the Mercury is combust or caizmi or retrograde which is also quite frequent it remains a good combination.

If you can delink the Sun-self ego/lower self connect, and reestablish the Sun-Higher self/Ultimate connect, the Sun’s energies will turn into a true blessing.

Use the Sun's energy

Now let’s use his energies proactively. First with the Mantra and the intentions. The early morning rays of the Sun are considered beneficial from the medical point of view but they have spiritual implications also. You can use the energy from the Sun, when he is rising, still saffron-orange-red in color. Here are a few ways you can channelise it,

  1. Do Suryanamaskar, the Yogasan, in the light of the rising Sun. Start with 3 repeats and increase one repeat per week. You can go upto maximum 108 repeats.
  2. Doing Suryanamaskar requires you to have the basic body fitness to begin with. If you are not reasonably fit, then do some simple stretching or warm-up type of exercises in this early morning sun-light.
  3. Do Tratak /staring at the rising disc of the Sun. This is to be done for maximum  1 minute, not more than that, when the Sun is just rising at the horizon. Not when it has fully risen else you can damage your physical eyes.
  4. Give Surya Arghya/water with mantras. Take a copper pot/kalash, fill it with water. If you have any of these these items, a bit of red saffron/ kumkum/ vermillion/ sandalwood powder, a red flower, a few grains of raw white rice, you should add it to the water. Now stand in front of the rising Sun, face him, raise your arms and let the water flow out in a thin stream. Look at the sunlight reflected in the water. While offering the water, you can recite the Surya arghya mantra once or the Surya Beej mantra ‘Om hraang hreeng hroung sah Suryaya namah’, or just ‘Om Suryaya namah’ 3 times.
This is an audio of the full Surya arghya mantra.
  5. If you cannot recite Sanskrit mantras for any reason, it is ok. Just stand in the light of the rising Sun, fold your hands express your gratitude to his energy for all that he gives. Be conscious of the divine.

If you cannot do anything at all, just sit in the sun, or have your morning tea in the light of the rising sun. If you cannot go out in the early morning sunlight every day, that is also ok. Do it at least on every Sunday then.

Now let’s consciously add some Sun-energy behaviour in our life. Sun ultimately represents the Divinity within you so try to bring a bit of the spiritual in your life. Some small spiritual practice, or some activity that your faith or your conscience tells you to do? But do it regularly. Also he represents Creativity, so we will need to find some creative outlets too. Here are some ideas.

  • Exercise for 15 mins at least, at least every alternate day, start with simple stretches, warm-up exercisess, on-the spot jogging, simple dance steps, enjoy it! Nothing too intensive, just as a reminder that you love your body and want to feel it move.
  • Eat a small piece of jaggery in the morning before you leave the house for the day.
  • Read about the colors, smells/fragrances and food tastes linked to the planets in these posts. If you feel inclined, try to use some of these energies of the Sun, even a tiny bit will be helpful.
  • Avoid taking donations or charity from anyone. If you have to accept some stuff of this sort then offer the energy back in the form of blessings.
  • Play with your kids. Set up a time for them, maybe 3 times a week? These kids are expressions of your creativity, acknowledge them in some way, give some time to them.
  • Write something, just two sentences every day. This ‘secret diary’ is an all-purpose solution because it allows you to express yourself creatively everyday. Write about something that you saw, felt, heard, said, read. Just 2 lines in your words.
  • Theatre is a natural outlet for the Sun, but not all of us can get involved in acting/drama. But you can try your hand in acting/singing/karaoke/mimicry etc in small get-togethers and parties. Practice a bit in front of the mirror before you perform in public.

And if you cannot do any of these things, then this is the simplest way. Everyday whenever you first see the Sun in the sky, morning/afternoon/evening whenever you see him, stop for a second, acknowledge his energy in your life, feel his warmth on your body and soul and be Grateful.

Use the Sun's energy
