How to analyse the Vimshottari Moon Mahadasha

Vimshottari dasha  analysis is something that every astrologer needs to know. The planets control parts of your life in a sequence which is called a Dasha. There are several Dasha systems but Vimshottari deserves a special place of its own and is the first Dasha system you will learn.

In case this detailed analysis is beyond you at the moment, I have written two basic posts, here and here with a brief analysis of the Mahadashas based on which houses the planets own in your chart.

The Vimshottari Maha-Dasha cover a human life span of 120 yrs and the sequence is,

Depending on which Nakshatra your Moon is in at the time of your birth, ie your Janma Nakshatra, you will begin your sequence. This start point is most important so ensure that you have your accurate birth time before doing Dasha analysis.

If your birth moon Nakshatra/ Lunar mansion is Rohini, Hasta or Shravan, then you will have your Moon Mahadasha/ main period going on at your birth. The balance of the planet’s dasha period remaining at birth is calculated using the location (arc degree/ minute/ second) of Moon in the nakshatra. If you get this birth time wrong, your starting point will be wrong thus your entire life-time’s calculation will also go wrong.

For the other birth Nakshatras, the Moon Mahadasha can occur at any point of time in the above sequence. But the Moon’s sub-periods/ Antardashas in the other planets Mahadashas will also carry his flavour.

Open your Vedic Jyotish software and open the Dasha section. If there are options here, input the ‘Vimshottari’ system. You have to see two things from here,

  1. At the present time, which planet’s Mahadasha/ main-period and which planet’s Antardasha/ sub-period is going on for you
  2. And at the time of your birth, which Mahadasha was going on.

If either of these, ie your ongoing Mahadasha or the birth Mahadasha is/ was of the Moon, then this post is for you,

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

First a generic description, assuming that the Moon in your birth chart is favourable for you.

If you were born in Moon Mahadasha then, you are more comfortable around women in general, you are especially close to your mother, feel strongly about your traditions and homeland. You have a family who cares for you. Your basic mind and body are both strong and healthy and the overall personality remains balanced. Communicative, reasonable, attractive, popular, pleasant to be with, a generally active personality. You are receptive to external influences and often modulate these to help you grow. But you are not very forthcoming about your own self, you keep your secrets well and trust only rarely. You have a caring nature, a supportive sort of a person, generous by nature but you can equally get shrewd, narrow minded, jealous and self-centred.

If you are undergoing the Moon Mahadasha now in your life then in this Moon Mahadasha, you will be more focussed on yourself, your needs, your comforts, your growth, your family, your love, your ancestral traditions, family gods etc. Your mother or other maternal figures will be more important in life. You will be taken care of, ie given the nurture, nutrition, love that you need. More settled in life, you might develop regular habits, feel creative, improve personal care, opt for a healthy lifestyle etc. That things which support you as a person will help you grow significantly. You will be able to set up routines for a healthier you. Buying your own house or landed property is possible or shifting into your own personal home is possible. People in professions related to the 4th house or the Moon will see growth, ie homeland security, teaching, home-makers, dealers in liquids, transport, drugs, architects, etc. You might be recognised for something, get awards. Marriage and child-birth is also possible in this period. In these 10yrs you will be required to balance karma related to the position of the Moon in your chart. Caring for others or ensuring that your emotions were being satisfied. Whatever the Moon is supposed to give you in your life will be given in this time. You will go through an emotional period, uplifting or damaging.

If the Mahadasha comes at an age after the maturity period of the Moon then the energies of the Dasha can be utilised consciously thus more effectively. If you are older than 48yrs, then during this Mahadasha it is likely that you will become the understanding and mature elder yourself. You will gain more insights into the working of your own Mind. It can be a very enriching experience. Even if you are older than 28yrs, this time can help self-discovery as you understand yourself more deeply. If you are younger than 28yrs then you will receive what you need from your elders to grow.

If your birth Moon is in Cancer or ascendant sign is Cancer then this Mahadasha will be especially significant for you.

Now to tailor these predictions for your personal life. This requires some basic understanding of Jyotish. (Here is a post on how to begin learning astrology systematically).

Step 1 is to know the aspects of life represented by the Moon and the power he has to deliver his results. You should know what he is going to give you, only then predicting the timing will be of any use. One graha is going to be directly responsible for so many things and indirectly influence so many more things in life. To keep things simple, learn to use keywords and create patterns using these.

  1. Moon in your birth chart (divisional chart 1/D-1).
    • He is placed in which house and in which sign? Thus which parts of your life is he controlling?
      • Eg Moon in 3rd house will be in charge of your siblings, income from trade, your hands, the internal confidence to take necessary actions, skills, practicality, etc. So in his Mahadasha expect these aspects of life to be more prominent in your life.
      • Eg if the Moon is any way connected to the 2nd or 7th houses then he can help in gaining money/ resources, good family life etc but this Dasha can also be linked to the timing of physical death. So do a quick check on longevity.
    • Which houses does he own? i.e. Cancer is placed in which house?
      • Eg Cancer placed in the 11th house will mean that the Moon is in charge of your friend circle, like minded groups, all gains in life, money from speculation, older siblings, etc. naturally these things will be more significant in your life now.
    • The ruler of the sign he is placed in, is he a friend/ neutral/ enemy planet. How comfortable is he in the sign he is occupying?
    • Is the Moon exalted/debilitated? Naturally an exalted Moon will give more pleasing results than a debilitated Moon.
    • Which planets is he conjoint/ aspected by? Thus which other aspects of the personality is he influencing directly and indirectly. If he is influenced by benefics then more favourable and pleasing results if by malefics then stress.
      • Eg Moon conjoint Mars in the 10th house. This will mean that Moon is in charge of the profession, social mobility, social image etc. But the Mars is now going to help by making his soft nature more bold, courageous, and allow him to take more risks in life. Thus the natural softness of the Moon is reinforced by the Martian qualities. And the natural aggression of Mars is tempered by the softness of the Moon.
    • Has he matured? Is the Moon’s maturity being held back by conjunction with later maturing planets?
      • Planets give more sensible results after maturity. His Dasha period after maturity will give more useful results.
    • What kind of power does he have.
      • His shadbala, avastha etc also can be seen for more insights into his nature in your chart. You can go deeper, depending on your level of study.
    • And since this is the Moon, you have to analyse the Nakshatra that he occupies at birth, ie your Janma Nakshatra characteristics.
  2. Repeat this same analysis from the birth Moon sign, i.e the birth Moon chart. (Do this only if you feel upto it, this is for advanced students)
Re-orient your chart around and count your birth Moon sign as the first house. This is the Moon chart and this tells you about the psychological and emotional aspects of your life. How you will ‘feel’ about the Moon Mahadasha. The psychological and emotional aspects. These aspects of life can be completely different from what is happening on the physical level.
  3. And this same analysis using the divisional chart 9, Navamsha chart will give a perspective on the sub-conscious expectations and the sum total of Moon’s potential. (Not for beginners. Do this whenever you are a bit advanced in your study, else you will end up confusing yourself.)

Step 2  Smaller sub-periods within the main period/ Mahadasha are called successively Antardasha, Pratyantardasha, Sookshmadasha and Prandasha. The logic on how to analyse these even smaller units remains the same for each planetary owner of the sub/ sub periods. In this post we will learn to analyse up to the Subperiod, ie the Antardasha.

  1. Find out the power of the sub-period planetary lord and the aspects of life that he controls just like you did for the Moon above.
    • Eg if you want to analyse the Moon Mahadasha and Jupiter antardasha, then you will have to find out both Moon’s and Jupiter’s power to give results.
  2. Then analyse the relationship between the Moon and the sub-period owner planet. If they are in the 6/8 or even the 12th from uncomfortable aspects, then that sub-lord’s sub-period will not be comfortable. If they are in the 5/9 axis it will be a favourable sub-period. The interaction between the planetary owners of the main-period and sub-period is quite important, take your time over it.
    • eg Jupiter is in 5th house and Moon in 9th house this will be an extraordinary time. Both are in the pivotal Kona houses, and in the 5/9 axis from each other. This could be one of the best periods of your life. This would also be a Gajakesari yog. So they will give tremendous progress in the Moon Mahadasha’s Jupiter Antardasha.
    • eg Jupiter in 11th house and Moon in 6th house in the birth chart. This time will not give good results. Moon in the 6th house of turmoil. Jupiter in the 11th is better placed for positive results. But they are mutually in the 6/8 axis. This is the Shakat yog, will give instability, ups and downs and significant confusion in the Moon Mahadasha’s Jupiter Antardasha.

Step 3 is the routine planetary transits /gochar. (Not for beginners. Do this analysis only if you have a good grasp of the fundamentals.) Transits can modify the results indicated by the Dasha system to some extent. So draw your birth chart (D-1) on a paper and superimpose the current planetary positions on it. Use a different pen so that you can make sense of the composite chart you are drawing. This is the last step you do.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

Now to analyse the sub-periods/Antardasha of the Moon’s main period/Mahadasha. This is just a starting point for you to base your own analysis on.

  • Moon antardasha
    • If the Moon is capable of giving pleasant results, this can be a very significant period of growth depending on which houses he is in charge of in your chart. There will be internal stability which will trigger prosperity in all forms. Personal and professional successes, marriage, birth of children, promotions, good investments, increase in wealth, good health and emotional stability, your instinct will work for you etc. If this is so, then you must make the most of this Antardasha.
    • If he is badly placed in your birth chart and inauspicious for you then emotional trauma, mental stress, physical ill health, loneliness, etc are possible in this first sub-period.
    • This is the first sub-period, so observe events around you and yourself carefully. This will set the tone for the entire Mahadasha. If this period has been favourable, you can expect continued generally favourable results. If this period has given mixed or unpleasant results you must take care. Then predicting favourable results will depend on power of the Subperiod rulers of the subsequent Antardashas.
  • Mars antardasha
    • If Mars is powerful, then in this sub-period you will take risks to achieve what you want. Highly motivated, confident, during this time you will bulldoze your opponents and gain your desires. A favourable Mars allows to to change yourself and your surroundings as per your desire. This period can be very fruitful especially if you are connected in any way to the land, eg army professional, agriculturalist, builder etc.
    • But if he is unable to give favourable results then overwork, have no time to rest, over-confidence, carelessness, anger, etc will be triggered. So pay attention to your health especially the blood related aspects. Your close family and siblings will be a source of trouble for you.
  • Rahu antardasha
    • If Rahu is capable of positive results, then this sub-period will make you want more than you have. Satisfaction will be less, you might spend more than you earn. Family may not support and professional life will not give happiness. But conversely all this will motivate you to work even harder and strive to gain more and more. You might achieve a lot of material gain during this period. However do not lie or cheat others during this time as it will backfire on you later. Try to do some Dharmic activity, eg pujas, pilgrimages, Mantra, Daan so as to keep the positivity coming in.
    • But is Rahu is going to be unpleasant for you then, this time will give you stress, losses and trouble on the physical as well as the emotional levels. You will feel tired and dispirited. If Moon or Rahu is connected to the 2nd or 7th and the longevity is at an end then physical death can occur. Even otherwise, you will be surrounded by people and things which drain you. Especially beware of any new women in your life as they can cause you harm. Legal issues are a distinct possibility during this time.
  • Jupiter antardasha
    •  If Jupiter is favourably disposed then this can be a great sub-period. Money, family, profession etc will all give happiness. Promotions, new jobs, better salary, more income are all possible. Long term investments or life time decisions during this period will be favourable. Travelling, pilgrimages etc will give pleasure. Education and learning will be encouraged. Both Moon and Jupiter are natural benefics so make the most of this time for growth and expansion. You will be known for something and there will be positivity in your life. Marriage, birth of children, job openings, educational prospects, health, wealth, spiritual mindset, pilgrimages, etc should be predicted as per the age in which the antardasha occurs. eg if the chart has some form of Gajakesari yog or a favourable Jupiter – Moon interaction you can achieve a lot during this sub period.
    • If he is not aligned favourably with the Moon then he will give erratic results. Avoid getting into any illegal or dubious activity during this time as it will give you pain later. Your luck is not with you at this time so you might think that something is surely in your hands, but it will slip out at the last moment. eg if the birth chart has the Shakat yog then be careful about predicting highly positive results.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

  • Saturn antardasha
    •  If Saturn and Moon together in your birth chart are capable of favourable results then this period can give some benefits. But you will have to work harder. Tiredness, delays, frustrations and loneliness will be there to some extent. You might feel afraid internally. Increase in stress will naturally affect health and happiness. You will be harsher with others and this can spoil relationships. Disputes with your family or mother specifically related to land, home and assets can occur. But try to see the fair and legal position of things rather than giving way to emotions. Try to work with facts and see the practical side of things. If used intelligently, this period will give you long lasting gains. Doing some puja will help you magnify the positivity.
    • In case he is not favourable then these negative effects as above will continue with no respite. You will be unable to make sense of the events around you and remain distressed.
  • Mercury antardasha
    • Both Moon and Mercury are natural benefics so this sub-period can be quite favourable to you. Here you can expect better relations with your siblings, trade related gains may pick up, stock market and investment options may be good, education opportunities will open up. Marriage, children, job etc whatever is a ‘happy outcome’ for your mind, will occur. Your logical mind will support you and you will have the necessary boldness to achieve your goals. You will have and use your skills to resolve any lingering issues from the previous Saturn sub-period.
    • But if they are unable to work together they will cause you pain, disappointment, ill health, mental stress, legal trouble etc. Avoid breaking the law or engaging in high risk speculations as loss of money is quite possible.
  • Ketu antardasha
    • if Ketu in your birth chart can give favourable results, then this can be a short but intensely spiritual time. You will feel disconnected from the people and things around you as your inner worlds are more alluring to your mind. Or if your birth chart is of the material sort then gains from secret sources, unexpected opportunities and gains are possible. Secret tips, insights, lucky guesses etc will help you as your intuition will be high.
    • But if there is a possibility of unpleasant results, then this time can be disturbing, mental stresses, loneliness, psychic interference, restlessness, etc. If Moon or Ketu is connected to the 2nd or 7th and the longevity is at an end then physical death can occur.
  • Venus antardasha
    • If Venus and Moon are capable of giving auspicious results together then this sub period can be a very rewarding one on several levels. Value, validation, nature, nurture, nutrition will be provided to you. Both the types of love ie needy love and equitable love will be available in your life. All your desires and wants will be fulfilled and you will be happy. Inner satisfaction, balance, fairness etc will be on a high. Depending on the physical age in which this sub-period comes, you might start some meditative practice or get married or birth of children or higher education is possible. Either way this will be a good time and do make the most of it. Money, family and good times are indicated.
    • But if Venus and Moon are unable to give pleasant results together then these very same things will be denied to you. There will be imbalance, unmet needs, loneliness and scarcity. Loss of money, resources, assets is possible.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

  • Sun antardasha
    • this is the chidra dasha, the ‘cutting off’ sub-period, the last antardasha of the Moon’s mahadasha. This is a time of review. You consolidate all that you experienced in your Moon mahadasha and cut off all that you failed to learn. The Moon will have given you opportunities for emotional fulfilment. Your relationship with your mother, maternal relatives, home culture, traditions, landed property etc were in focus. ‘Need’ based love relationships or nurturing relationships.
    • Now the Sun is personal confidence, ego, self entitlement. ‘Selfishness’ will clean out the Moon persona and prepare for the Mars persona which is to follow. You feel a new rush of energy in you. The Sun will prepare a dispassionate list of things of what you gave and what was received. If you have given more, you might suddenly find these dependant others being systematically cut off. Only the basic unavoidable relationships which you intellectually feel necessary will be sustained by this Sun. All the opportunities for emotional fulfilment, ‘Need’ based love relationships will be consolidated. The softness and gentleness of the Moon will be gradually replaced by qualities of Mars, which is the next Mahadasha in sequence.
    • But in the last Sun Antardasha, you will decisively end all emotionally draining things. And for those emotionally uplifting things, you will remove their emotional parts and appreciate them on an intellectual level.
    • If the Sun is capable of giving positive results, there will be improvement in personal health, vitality, finances, status and power. You will also become more distant from others. ‘Neediness’ will be reduced in all ways.
    • If he is not auspicious for you, even then he will work in the same direction but the process will be painful, stressful. You will face arguments, fevers, ill health, exit of a maternal figure, cut off from the homeland, selfishness from others etc sort of results.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

Everyone who wants to learn astrology should analyse their own horoscope first. It is quite easy to predict major events in life and with some practice you can predict minor events too. Get into the habit of pulling out your own chart for a detailed analysis every 6 months. Look at the Dasha periods and transits that will happen over the next 6 months, try to predict 1-2 things which might happen. These can be very simple things to being with, eg some disturbance over the 4th house = some issue related to mother. Some positivity over the 10th house = a pleasant time in the office. Tally these predictions 6 months later, be systematic about it and evaluate for yourself how accurate you are getting.

Finally remedies can be used to set any unbalanced energies right. These are basically three,

Behavioural, ie you understand what is happening to you and try to intelligently and consciously modulate your behaviour in a way most appropriate to the situation. This requires significant control over the Mind and not everyone can do this. But if you are doing your regular spiritual practice then this becomes inbuilt in your nature.

Mantra- You use the power of the Devbhasha Samskrutam and your own intentions to change the course of the event energies. Mantras of the Moon can be used during his Mahadasha, especially do something every Monday. Or any of these activities which enhance his power. Or mantra of the Bhagwan Shankar also work well enough.

Daana You give away the unbalanced energies to a Consciousness capable of absorbing them, a worthy Brahmin, a deity or a river/sea, this is the real meaning of Daana.

Navamsha and the important years in life

Navamsha is the D9 chart and it gives a lot of information if studied systematically. This post is on how to determine the significant and eventful years in your life using the D9 chart. The times in your life where some important event will occur. However, this event may be favourable or unfavourable depending on the planet triggering it.

This is a practical exercise, so open your birth chart and navamsha chart. As always, you will need the precise birth details in order to be able to use the divisional charts. Navamsha analysis is a vast subject, so do practice and tally your results with what actually happened in your or your subject’s life.

www

Let’s begin with this table. It gives, in sequence, all the nine amsha of each of the twelve signs. eg the nine amsha of Aries sign are in sequence, Aries to Sagittarius. eg the nine amsha of the Pisces sign are in sequence from Cancer to Pisces. The vargottam amsha are encircled in the chart for easy reference.

Try to locate the nav amsha of your chart’s ascendant degree and all the 9 planets in this table, it will make things easier later.

www

Now our example. This is the birth chart and navamsha chart for Aleister Crowley, 12th Oct 1875, 11: 42pm, Leamington Spa, Britain. He is dead and has a documented and rather happening life, (the wiki on him is quite an entertaining read), so is a good case study.

Birth chart Aliester Crowley

Navamsha Aleister Crowley

1st Method

Count the number of nav amsha from the nav amsha of the planet to the nav amsha of the ascendant degree.

  • Eg In our example chart, his Moon is in Pisces in the birth chart and in Cancer nav amsha. His ascendant degree is in Cancer in birth chart and in the Scorpio nav amsha. So you can simply count the nav amsha in sequence from Pisces sign Cancer navamsha to the Cancer sign Scorpio nav amsha. The count is 41. Thus Crowley must have had some beneficial results in the 41st year of his life, especially related to the Moon and his function in the chart. Moon is his ascendant lord so this positive effect must have helped him on the physical as well as emotional levels as must have created an environment suitable for him in some way. As per his wiki, he worked as a double agent for Britain during this period, so its possible that he enjoyed every bit of it and had some critical successes. The ascendant lord is ultimately the personality in every way and Crowley chose to use this energy to become a spy for his motherland. Moon also represents the homeland and its security.
  • Eg. Saturn in in the Capricorn sign and Virgo nava amsha. And the ascendant degree is in Cancer sign and in the Scorpio nav amsha. Saturn is a class one malefic for Cancer ascendant. Even if he is well placed in his own sign he cannot be counted on to give favourable results. Whatever results he gives will be linked in some way to the catastrophic transformational effects of the 8th house Aquarius which is also his mool trikon sign. So at the age of 60 yrs, Saturn must have given Crowley some misfortune which would have affected his standing in the society or financial status or caused some problems in his partnerships etc. In the wiki it says that he was declared bankrupt in Feb 1935. Money is also a function of the 7th house.

Similarly you can calculate the eventful years for the other planets. Depending on the nature of the planet and the aspects of life that he controls you can anticipate the nature of the significant events and their impact on the personality.

2nd Method

Count the number of nav amsha from the nav amsha of the ascendant degree to the nav amsha of the planet.

  • Eg. Moon is in Pisces in the birth chart and in Cancer nav amsha. The ascendant degree is in Cancer in the birth chart and in Scorpio nav amsha. So the count is 69. Thus the 69th year of life must have given Crowley some beneficial results especially from the Moon. The ascendant lord being the triggering planet, this event must be related to personal growth, fame, etc. And at this age, as per the wiki, he published his Book of Thoth and the magnificent Thoth Tarot deck. (On a personal note, am very grateful that he created it)
  • Eg. if you count for Saturn in the Capricorn sign and Virgo nav amsha, the count is 59yrs. So at this age, some misfortune related to Saturn must have affected Crowley. Now in the 1st method, we saw that Saturn was going to create a misfortune at the age of 60yrs. And now by the 2nd method the 59yrs age was also going to be impactful in a malefic way. So this period had court cases which went against him leading on to the bankruptcy. Court cases are a subject of the 7th house. So the eventful years triggered by the malefic being so close together caused a severely negative and inauspicious result.

3rd Method

Simply counting the nav amsha occupied by the planet starting from the first nav amsha in Ashwini nakshatra.

  • eg. Moon is in Pisces in birth chart and in Cancer nav amsha. This is the 100th nav amsha in sequence. So if Crowley had lived to a 100yrs, this year would have been favourable for him, especially for the results possible from the Moon.
  • Eg. Counting for Saturn, this comes to 90yrs. So at the age of 90yrs, some sort of displeasing result could have occurred in case he would have lived till this age.
  • Eg. Ketu is in Virgo sign and Taurus nav amsha. So the count comes to 50yrs. As per his wiki, he wrote a book on some visions he experienced. And his lover miscarried his child. Virgo is the 3rd sign so writing a book is logical, plus the vision explains Ketu’s influence. And the miscarriage is a classic effect of Ketu.
  • Similarly the time indicated by his Sun is 54yrs. He wrote more books including a part of his autobiography. Sun is the reason that he attempted to write an autobiography this time.

4th Method

You have to count from the nav amsha the planet is placed in to the lord of the nav amsha in which the planet is placed in.

  • Eg. Moon is in Pisces in Cancer nav amsha. The owner of Cancer is Moon himself. So the count is 109. Obviously he did not live for so long, but if he would have, this year would have given him some good results from the Moon.
  • Eg. Jupiter is in Libra sign and Aquarius nav amsha. Saturn the owner of Aquarius is in Capricorn sign Virgo nav amsha. So the count is 44. So Crowley must have gone through some eventful happening connected to Jupiter at the age of 44yrs. As per his wiki, he received financial assistance from patrons for publishing his books. He was engaged in translating philosophical works from other cultures during this time. Classic results attributable to the position of his Jupiter, owner of the 9th, with Venus and Mercury in the 4th house in Libra. As the ruler of the 6th he ensured that this shaped Crowley’s mind and actions in such a way that he was ultimately rejected by others of British origin and also the Christian faith. And more immediately, made him destitute, lonely, ill and got him addicted to heroin.

5th Method

This is a relatively simple count. Count from the nav amsha occupied by the planet concerned to the nav amsha occupied by the Moon.

Eg. Moon is in Pisces in Cancer nav amsha. Jupiter is in Libra sign and Aquarius nav amsha. So counting will give you 42yrs. This would be the time where Jupiter must have given some significant event in Crowley’ s life. As per his wiki, he had a relaxing time promoting his new religion. Jupiter as the lord of the 9th and 6th house giving his classic result, seemingly pleasant but ultimately malefic.

www

So now you can calculate the eventful years in your life using all these methods.

Note the years you arrive at separately for every planet. Some of the planets will be functional malefics and some will be functional benefics. And some will be natural malefics and natural benefics. You will have to reconcile them in a subjective manner to understand the nature of the event and its effect on you.

Eg for Cancer ascendant, Mars is the biggest benefic, yogkarak, but technically he is a natural malefic. So though he will act in his typical aggressive, invasive, courageous, cruel, dominating etc manner and also create events of severe and disruptive energies, still these Martian energy will propel the native, Crowley in our example, to sure-shot successes, gains and fame. Then again for Cancer ascendant, I consider Jupiter more of a malefic as he is incharge of the 6th and 9th houses, additionally the 6th Sagittarius is his mooltrikon. So the natural tendencies of Jupiter, kindness, benevolence, traditional learning, philosophy, support from patrons, etc will more likely than not land the native, here Crowley, in trouble, which is quite evident from the life that this typical man lead.

Next, you will see that a particular year might repeat as per the various counts. eg you might have two benefics giving a positive event eg at the age of 42yrs. So this year becomes more significant in your life and has the capacity to propel you upwards even more rapidly. But if you see two malefics giving their effect at the same age, then you must be doubly careful during this time as there will be added misfortune. eg, was the example related to Saturn granting Crowley bankruptcy in the years 59-60, it was just one Saturn affecting two successive years so the trouble was just his doing. But if there are two different planets then expect trouble from different directions in life.

Also, if you have your eventful years coinciding with the ages of the maturity of the houses or the maturity of the planets then should be more aware of what is happening around you during this time. Try to proactively use the opportunities presented to you by this double surge of energy.

Finally, there will always be several events going on around you but the events indicated by these planets in these times will have the maximum impact on you. You will feel the ripples of these events more deeply within your being and they will change the course of your life. These five methods will give you the most important years in life which will have the most significant events, but to find out what exactly these events will be, do use your own logic, common sense, analyse the texts and practice.

(These methods are directly from C S Patel’s books, I have added just a few minor observations. His books are invaluable for serious student of Jyotish as he gives important insights which are not available elsewhere.)

Raj Yog in the horoscope

There are so many combinations on the Raj yog that it often becomes confusing for students. To begin with remember this simple concept, “Any combination of the Kendra and the Kona energies is a potential Raj yog”.

The Kendra houses are the 1st 4th 7th and 10th. These are the pillars on which the entire horoscope is raised. There is one house from each of the trikons, Dharma 1st, Arth 10th, Kaam 7th and Moksh 4th trikon-s. The potential of your horoscope is summarised in these 4 Kendra houses. If you understand the Bhavat Bhavam concept, the importance of these 4 houses will be clear. The 7th house is the only house directly linked to the 1st. And the 4th and 10th are directly connected via the bhavat bhavam to the 7th house. The personality expresses itself mainly through these 4 houses in a solid manner.

The Kona houses are the three, 1st 5th and 9th. The 1st house is a Kona as well as a Kendra house and interlinks the energies of these two types of houses. It is the pivot around which the entire horoscope turns. The three Kona houses together are actually the Dharma trikon. This represents the power of the personality and how you use it to ever-evolve yourself. This interlinked 1/5/9 axis of genius, creativity, foundations, luck, blessings and auspicious merits is the real creator of your dynamic personality. In this axis, one aspect of your personality creates the second which again creates the third which cyclically feeds back to the first, in an ever evolving spiralling manner.

  • 1st house –  the overall personality, the overall environment, role in society, will power, health, longevity etc, basically a snapshot of you
  • 4th house – the security, comforts, emotional health, nurture, mother, childhood experiences, basic education, house, lands, vehicles etc.
  • 5th – divine intelligence, creativity, expression of creativity, children, self-ego, recognition as an individual, spirituality
  • 7th house – husband/wife, partnerships, legal relations, business, fertility, passion, foreign travels, business rivals too
  • 9th – all the support you will receive from all sources, your beliefs, patrons, peers, paternal figures, religion, ancestors, your past life merits etc
  • 10th house – social presence, power, prestige, profession, salaries, actions done to resolve karma, power, authority in public etc.

The concept of Yog-karak is also derived from this. If a planet simultaneously owns a Kendra and a Kona house then he is capable of giving a lot of positive results in life. He then called a Yogkarak. This one planet placed well can confer ‘Raj yog’ on his own.

www

So open your birth chart. If there any connections between the following, you have a ‘Raj-yog’ in your chart. It is as simple as that. (There are other combinations which are also called Raj Yog, but the common factor is that the energy of the Kona or Kendra has to be involved.)

  • 1st lord with 4th lord
  • 1st lord with 7th lord
  • 1st lord with 10th lord
  • 1st lord with 5th lord
  • 1st lord with 9th lord
  • 4th lord with 5th lord
  • 4th lord with 9th lord
  • 5th lord with 7th lord
  • 5th lord with 10th lord
  • 7th lord with 9th lord
  • 9th lord with 10th lord

These connections can be,

  1. Exchange of houses, also called parivartan (post here)
  2. Kendra/Kona lord occupying a Kona/Kendra position (one exception is the Kendradhipati combination post here)
  3. Sometimes, even if they are conjunct or even aspecting each other in a positive house then too you can consider them to be in a sort of a Raj-Yog. More the combinations more strong is the yog and more likely to give significant results.

These planets creating the Raj-Yog should be strong and capable of auspicious results. So you will have to check out their Shad-bala, Ishta-bala, Vimshopka,  Ashtakvarga, position in the Navamsha etc depending on your level of study. (There are other combinations too which are called Raj yog, but to begin with, start with this concept.)

www

And it is a very common question is that despite having Raj-yogs in a chart why do they fail to realise their promise. Here are some points which you can use in your study.

  1. Power of the ascendant sign. This sign produces your physical body, the physical environment around you. If the sign is afflicted by malefics or in any way blocked from giving results, or are not capable of auspicious results then the personality and the environment is not strong enough to produce the results of the raj-yog.
  2. Power of the ascendant lord. This graha coordinates between the personality and the environment. The dynamic aspect. He has to be strong to be able to make full use of the potential of the chart. (post here)
  3. Power of the birth Moon. The birth Moon is a major force in your chart, almost equal to the ascendant lord. Analyse him properly before you do anything else. He controls your astral body, emotions, perceptions etc and subtly influences everything around you. Eg you might become the CEO of your company but if your Moon is weak, you will suffer stress and not be able to enjoy this position.
  4. The Dasha-s which never come or which come at the inappropriate time of life. You have to learn Dasha-s very systemically to be able to time events. Vimshottari dasha system has to be learnt in depth. Study at least one more Dasha system in addition to Vimshottari. Always use two Dasha-s systems to cross check your predictions. The potential of the house is triggered only in the appropriate Dasha, which should come at an appropriate time/age. Eg. If the triggering dasha comes at the age of 4yrs age and it is to do with the 5th house. What is the child going to do about his 5th house potential at this age? He might get parental love, be a confident child etc. His parents will benefit to some extent from the child’s chart’s positive energy and thus the child will indirectly benefit. But that is about it. Now if this triggering Dasha were to come at the age of 25yrs then the actual person would have really been able to use his own energies.
  5. Then it is possible that the results may be delivered only in specific mahadashas/ antardashas/ pratyantar dashas. eg. if it were to occur during Rahu Mahadasha then he will take away the successes after his dasha period gets over. So a spectacular rise followed by a rapid descent is seen.
  6. The fine-tuning can be done using transits. These are the regular movements of the grahas in the zodiac. These can be used to exactly pin-point the exact timing of the event within the broader framework of the Dasha.
  7. Next is the divisional charts. You cannot predict only with the birth chart. Eg a beautifully placed Sun in the D1 becomes debilitated in the D9. The potential is hollow, it will not give happiness, instead give inauspicious results, a beautiful apple with a rotten core. You have to analyse the D9 always. And in case the question is specific then the specific DC should also be referred to, eg for profession then the related D 10 too should be seen.

Why does some event occur? Why does some promised event not occur? If it did occur, why did it occur the way it did? Why at this typical intensity? These are questions which make one a good predictive astrologer. Try to learn astrology systematically (post here), analyse your sample charts. Try to match the events in life, like getting a job, marriage, deaths, divorces, birth of children etc with the charts. This is the only way you will learn. Just reading books is not enough. Learning to predict events successfully in the correct perspective comes only by practical practice.

(There was a question on this and I felt it was better to write the answer as a small post.)

Judge a true Ascetic from the horoscope

We are seeing a surge in spiritualism with ‘spiritual masters’ and ‘mystics’ popping up all around. Most of these are businessmen capitalising on the commercial aspects of the “spirituality business’, looking to cheat you of your money. Or Yogi-s who are on the same path as you are. A real Sat-Guru is someone who has realised the Eternal Advaita, a Jivan-mukt. There are very very few of these in the world right now. (I have written on how to analyse spirituality, the power of the chart and the evolution level of the horoscope.)

Then there are the true ascetic, Sanyasi-s. These are also rare, not very common. These are men/women who turn their back very firmly on the material world in their over-riding desire to experience the Ultimate. Every action they do is only for this objective. Such people cannot enjoy materialistic life and are repulsed by it. If someone really has the qualities to be a Sanyasi/ascetic then the following combinations will exist in his chart. More the combinations more pronounced is the effect.

Judge a true Ascetic from the horoscope

First and foremost is Saturn’s paramount influence. For getting into full time spiritual activity and rejecting the society structure, Saturn has to be powerful in the chart. Or should control important houses of the chart. Without his blessings, no dedicated spiritual activity is possible. He decides when your outer karma have been balanced so that you enter the inner spiritual with the finality of Sanyas.

Some typical combinations,

  • Ascendant lord aspecting Saturn. But no one else, not even Saturn, should be aspecting the ascendant lord in return. This is possible if the ascendant lord is Jupiter or Mars who can aspect Saturn with his extra aspects.
  • Saturn aspecting the ascendant lord. But no one else including the ascendant lord should be aspecting Saturn. This is possible if Saturn aspects this planet with his extra 3rd and 10th aspects.
  • The ascendant lord is Saturn himself unaspected by any one else. This is possible if the ascendant is Capricorn or Aquarius.
  • Check out the planetary ruler of the birth Moon sign. If this planet is Saturn himself and unaspected by any one else then it can give full-blown Sanyasi tendency. Or this planet is aspecting Saturn but no one else should be aspecting this planet.

If any of these above conditions exist in a birth chart, Saturn can allow a clean separation from the materialistic world and entry into Sanyas. This can be an actual physical event of going away to an Ashram. Or the person may continue to live in the society but withdraw completely into himself and his sadhana. The timing of this event will be decided by the transit/ dashas. If the suitable dasha/ transits do not come up at the proper age then this event may not even happen. The promise of the birth chart needs the appropriate dasha/ transit to fructify. eg If this time comes when the age is 3yrs, naturally a 3yr old is not going to take Sanyas. Or if this time comes at the age of 70yrs, then the main life has already passed by and formal Sanyas at this age is rather meaningless, the person has already entered the Sanyas-ashram stage of life. But if this time comes at the age of say 25-50yrs then the formal Sanyas event can occur in a very final manner.

In addition to these conditions, if the Ascendant lord and the birth Moon are strong then he will be very well adjusted to the spiritual path he chooses. If Ketu has some connection with Venus then he gain significant progress in it. And if the Sun is also enabling, then he can be a publicly visible personality eg a Guru with many disciples etc prominent in society.

Judge a true Ascetic from the horoscope

Now if any chart,

  • If any of these above conditions exist but only partially, eg if Saturn is aspecting the ascendant lord with his 7th aspect, ie getting aspected by the ascendant lord in return, or is conjunct with other planets etc.
  • Or if there are other powerful combinations involving these planets with each other, Saturn, ascendant lord, 9th house lord, 5th house lord, Yogkarak planet and birth Moon.
  • Or Saturn strongly aspects the birth Moon and both are favourable for the chart,
  • If in the birth chart, if the Saturn, ascendant lord, birth Moon or Yogkarak are unaspected by anyone else and very powerful then,

Then this person will have a deep discontent with the material world but the active action of turning into an ascetic, Sanyasi may not occur. He may be unhappy, discontent, may not marry, may not be happy professionally, there may be bouts of isolation, self-doubts, loneliness, depression and dejection. He may have all possible material comforts, a good family, a good job, but he will not derive any satisfaction from these material things. He will desperately long for Realisation, initially there will be obstacles and confusion in this path. Only after middle age will the situation get more comfortable as he will understand himself better. Such a person needs to take up some sort of spiritual practice to maintain his inner balance else his levels of frustration can get very high.

Saturn will grant significant spiritual growth for these following ascendant signs, depending on his position in the chart, the power of the chart as a whole and the evolution level of the chart.

  • Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants can become highly spiritual after middle-age if the other combinations support.
  • Taurus and Libra ascendants too have a significant possibility for spiritual progress as Saturn is Yogkarak for these two.
  • And, as I always stress, Cancer and Leo ascendants have a fast-track on the spiritual route as their 7th house is owned by Saturn. (The 7th house also indicates the highest one-one relationship with the Self.)

If your ascendant is one of these six signs then try to do some regular spiritual practice, it will help in very deep ways. This can be as simple as reciting the Gayatri mantra or lighting a lamp or giving Arghya to the Sun or Dhyan Sushumna Yog- Soham, anything which you feel drawn to, but do it daily.

Judge a true Ascetic from the horoscope

The next planet which has a significant role in spiritual growth is Jupiter. If there is a conjunction of Moon, Jupiter and the ascendant lord in the birth chart, then this person is an ascetic at heart. This personality is sober, gentle, kind etc. Depending on the triggering dasha/ transit, he will interested in religion and spirituality, start doing some type of spiritual practice. He will experience the higher levels of consciousness and internal awareness with time. This combination by itself is not strong enough to make him formally a Sanyasi, he will not leave the society with just this combination. However he will be apart from the tangles caused by society and remain in his own happiness.

Now in such a birth chart,

  • if Saturn also conjuncts or aspects these three, (Moon, Jupiter and the ascendant lord) then too this person may formally leave the society. The triggers for this actual event would naturally be the Dasha/transits of Jupiter and/ or Saturn.
  • If Saturn’s influence is missing on these three (Moon, Jupiter and the ascendant lord) in the birth chart but the person goes through a significant Saturn transit, or dasha then this person can suddenly change. He can become a become a formal ascetic or may live on in the society but internally he has dissociated from the illusion that is Maya.

The next planet we should consider is the Sun. He has to be either very strong or very weak! Both these options will drive towards asceticism.

  • A strong Sun (check the asktakvarga, shadbala, navamsha etc) will make the personality focus more strongly on his own internal divinity. Eventually he will realise and subsume his tiny individual awareness into the Eternal intelligence of the Advaita.
  • If this Sun is weak, then the personal ego is already very dim and the personality is more than willing to realise the Highest within.

Finally some connection between Venus and Ketu is necessary. It can be as simple as conjunction, aspect, bhavat bhavam, some connection in the navamsha, or one of these occupying a Nakshtra owned by the other, etc. There will be some interaction of Ketu and Venus energies which will trigger the final realisation of Moksh.

You might not get clients which such full-on ascetic combinations in your practice. But you definitely will get charts where there are partial combinations. Well-off people but with a deep internal turmoil. In such cases, advising them to start some personal spiritual practice will help them. And if your own chart shows such partial combinations then spend time daily in Dhyan, in your spiritual practice and in contemplation of the inner Eternal.

Fine tuning predictions, Dasha plus Transit

In astrology, we need to time events. Making predictions is a necessary analysis. For this we have the Dasha systems. The most popularly know is the Vimshottari dasha system but there are the others too, like Ashtottari, Yogini or Kaalchakra. The potential of the birth charts is converted to reality only during specific Mahadasha/ antardasha main and sub periods (there are further smaller subdivisions too, eg Vimshottari has 5 sub-levels, but interpreting them is tedious). Sub-periods can be upto 2-3yrs in length. So, within a sub-period how do we pinpoint the exact time when an event is to occur. (The potential of the birth chart is the basis of all predictions so do analyse your birth chart in detail before going on to timing events. This will include at the very basic, the birth chart, the birth Moon chart, the Navamsha D9 and the Ashtakvarga.) There are a few rules given in the classical texts for pin-pointing events with transits and Dasha.

Fine tuning predictions, Dasha plus Transit

There are some planet based Dashas like Vimshottari and Yogini. Here the periods in life are ruled by a sequence of planets.

Check out your main and sub periods from your vedic astrology software. eg Vimshottari Dasha system, you are in the Saturn Mahadasha, Venus Antardasha. Saturn Mahadasha continues for 19 years and in this this is the Venus sub-period is about 2yrs 9 mths. So you should be analysing Saturn for 19yrs and Venus specifically for 2yrs 9mths. During this time you should be aware of what Saturn and Venus are upto in the current skies. Their transit positions, combustion, retrograde, conjunction/aspects with other planets. You are interested in the movements of these two planets in the transit as they directly affect you.

When this planet transits the signs owned by his enemies or his sign of debilitation or gets combust he will be unable to give auspicious results in his period.

  • Eg For Saturn this would be when he transits signs owned by enemies, Leo, Cancer, Aries (also debilitated) and Scorpio. He will get combust once a year for about 25days. So during these times during the 19yrs Mahadasha he will be unable to express himself fully.
  • Eg for Venus, this would be during this transits in Cancer and Leo the signs ruled by enemies. He will get combust once a year for about 20days. Look out for these transits during his Saturn-Venus 2yr 9mth sub-period.

Now when the owner of a time period is in his own signs, his sign of exaltation or in signs of friendly planets naturally he will give auspicious effects. Even during retrogression, he can give good results as during this period he allows re-thinking and revising, so you are able to take more considered decisions.

  • Eg For Saturn this would be when he transits Capricorn, Aquarius, Gemini, Virgo, Taurus and Libra (also exalted). He will get retrograde once a year for about 3-4 mths.
  • Eg for Venus, this would be during transits in Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Taurus, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces (exalted). He will get retrograde once a year for about 3-4 mths.

In all this keep track of Saturn’s and Venus’s interactions with each other in the current skies. We are comparing their real time transit interactions with each other.

  • Eg If they go in the 6/8 or 2/12 axis then their ability to mutually interact gets compromised. Eg if Saturn is in Gemini and Venus is in Taurus its a 2/12 axis. Or if Venus is in Virgo and Saturn is in Aries 6/8 axis.

This is how the potential of the promise of the Dasha is fine-tuned using the transits. Do appreciate the difficulty of predicting pin-point events. So if you want to see how the Saturn Mahadasha-Venus sub-period is going to be, you need to know the potential of the birth chart, then track the movements of Saturn and Venus throughout the 2yrs and 9mths in the future. You have software, panchangam and ephemeris to help you but still it will take time, a few hours or more.

Fine tuning predictions, Dasha plus Transit

And there are some Sign based dasha systems, like Kaalchakra, Jaimini rashi dasha etc where the periods in life are ruled by signs and not planets.

The concept remains the same. Identify the Sign/Rashi whose Dasha is on. What all this sign signifies in your birth chart will be in focus during its time period, the background energy. Then check out the transiting planets which will be in or aspecting this sign during its time period. Whatever these planets signify will be in focus on the background of the sign. Their comfort levels, combustion, retrogression etc will help pin-point events. This analysis will also take time.

If you are used to working with the Jaimini rashi Dasha systems, you can draw the Dasha pravesh chart for the exact minute the Sign/Rashi Dasha starts. It gives a quite reliable summary of the events possible during this period. For the other Dasha systems knowing the exact minute for the start of the time periods is not possible, so you cannot use the Dasha pravesh chart.

Interpreting Dasha and transits against the backdrop of the birth chart requires time and practice. Practice with your and your family/friends charts whose exact birth details you know. Get your experience and then start doing the readings professionally. So open your own chart, try to tally events of the past 6 months and then try to predict the events possible in your life for the next 6 months. Practice.
