Exalted and Debilitated, Sun, Moon & Mars.

Exalted/ucch and deblitated/neech planets are terms thrown about casually by most astrologers without understanding what they really mean. And in the simplest possible words, when the energy of the planet perfectly matches the energy of the environment/sign it is ‘exalted’. And conversely, when the energy of the planet perfectly mis-matches the energy of the rashi environment it is ‘debilitated’. Simple!

Astrology is the matching of energies to get a meaningful analysis. If you can understand the energy dynamics of the 12 houses/signs and the 9 planetary forces, astrological readings will become effortless and intuitive. Start by learning the basic keywords.

Now lets check out the Sun, he is exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra.

  • Sun is the Radiant Royal! He feels that he is entitled to his right to rule. He does not trade, he does favours on his subjects. He is the entitled elite, the others are his subjects. his word is law and he does not even really need to listen to the other. He does not share his throne with anyone else, he is self-referential and individualistic. The divine intelligence and the center of the universe!
  • Mars is a great friend of the Sun and his Aries is The First! The Sun’s independence and confidence get an added boost. He becomes the Royal Warrior here with all the energies and vitality of the physical body at his command, is handsome! He is the best in his field, noble, active, ambitious, courageous, liberal, optimistic, charming, favoured among the opposite sex and adored as such. The entitlement of the Sun and the energy of Mars make this a very comfortable posting. He is the center of vitality, his personal integrity beyond doubt and can perform vigorously in self-employed business, military, politics or as a movie-star, is a bit selfish too. The Sun is able to perfectly express the energies of his surrounding environment which in turn supports him fully too, thus is exalted.
  • Venus is Libra the Perfect Partner! Venus and Sun are enemies. Libra is all about beauty, negotiations, balance, fairness, agreements, trade. To survive and thrive in Libra the Sun is required to have at least a basic sense of bargaining, making alliances, matching and pairing and being beautiful. A resident planet who really doesn’t believe in any of these traits, and in fact behaves exactly oppositely is bound to be rather unhappy here. The Sun gets very selfish here, he cannot and does not acknowledge his supporting friends/family/staff who contribute to his success. He is interested in making alliances and bargains but these fizz out because of his Ego. This is thus inharmonious for marriage as there is little tolerance of imperfection and mutual interests.. Libra is about sharing, partnerships and fairness that is regulated by the legal system of that age. It does not believe in entitlement. But the Sun believes that he himself is the divine intelligence and above the law, thus is highly uncomfortable here.

The Moon, is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio.

  • Moon is the mind, the astral self, the sub-conscious, the emotions and the combined experiences of several lives. It is the original sea of creation. He is the prefect reflection, the agent of emotions, comfort and security. He controls the experiences that we receive from our mother, residence, lands and immoveable properties, homeland, customs and traditions of our people. He also controls rhythms from the soothing lullabys to the great cycles of time and space. Every event in this life is seen through the lens of the Moon/Mind!
  • Venus as Taurus is basically the stored assets and resources of the lineage. This statement describes the basic nature of the Moon perfectly. Collecting and banking resources, saving them and retrieving them whenever required is the basic function of this sign. Reservoir of history, database of stories, a warehouse, an inventory and the behaviour associated with these is Taurus. The treasuries are almost always secret which makes the Moon very happy. We really dont know what the Moon is because he reflects everything thus hiding his real self. Now from an astral point of view, the Moon is the stored resources and treasuries of all the lives that we have led. The life events tagged with emotions become experiences which are stored as the mind. And the Moon is the Mind! Thus Moon is perfectly happy when he resides in Taurus because his basic nature is validated here.
  • Mars as Scorpio is the explorer of the unknown depths. Here, Scorpio wants to penetrate into the sea of creation that the Moon is. Mars here drills into the realm of the Moon with single-minded vitality and force. He uses the occult and the sub-conscious as his weapon, and is vindictive and vengeful. This makes the mysterious Moon very uncomfortable. The sign represents the fires in the energy channels and sudden forceful movements, like accidents, traumas, surgeries, death etc. Dramatic transformations and creation of new identities. These ruthless energies are not a suitable environment for the comfort-seeking, emotionally vulnerable moon.
  • Scorpio is also said to be partly ruled by Ketu/South node. This further irritates the Moon because Ketu is the agent of un-belonging, apathy, severance, abandonment, indifference and disinterest. This is completely against the Moon’s basic nature of emotional security, comfort, belonging, nurture, care and maternal behaviour.
  • woman in red and multicolored top holding head while smiling inside room

Now we come to Mars, exalted in Capricorn and deblitated in Cancer

  • Mars is the agent of Life and DeathMars is the fiery energies that effect transformation birth-death-rebirth. He is the physical structure of the body and also the vital energy that flows through it, domination and strength. He is the invader, pioneer, the warrior and the competitive spirit. He is full of vigour, vitality and excitement. We need his energies to remain alive, when properly channelized these are called self confidence. He is the fiery energy in action. The masculine Man.
  • Saturn of Capricorn is the best possible environment for Mars. Here Saturn allocates only that much vitality to Mars which he can realistically use. And this energy is to be used for the welfare of the people and the society. Saturn is the strict teacher who ensures that you systematically re-balance your karma. Using the focussed energies of Mars for this is their best possible use. And as Mars does even more good work for the society, the society also appreciates him in return, giving him position and power, thus he feels validated. He is competitive but regulated. He is an Executive and can be very good in corporate and in government equally. He uses his structured, legal, active force with understanding of long terms goals. Mars here knows precisely how to apply the available energy in the most productive tasks and he remains focussed on working on and expanding his social reputation and control.
  • Moon of Cancer drowns the Mars in a sea of dreams. Here his energy is controlled by the fickle impulses of sensation. Here Mars faces the challenge of expressing delicate Cancer emotions in a direct vital Mars forceful style. His direct nature becomes emotionally volatile, and the Cancer’s love of the homeland suffocates his instinct to invade. Expression of sexuality is always affected as Mars though attracted to the corresponding partner, cannot express himself physically, can be a problem in marriage. Wherever Mars is he will compete and win. Cancer wants him to nurture but he wants to conquer! So Mars manipulates emotionally and psychologically. He tries to dominate others emotionally. He wants to have a bond with the mother and other topics of Cancer but they are often dysfunctional.Spikes of rage and violence can occur where the sudden burst of outward fiery energy moves in the liquid watery diffused emotional environment of Cancer. Not a very happy placement for the always-First planet!

This was on the exalted and debilitated sun, moon and mars. I have written on Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in my post here. You do not need to learn by rote anything. Just understand their basic natures. This will help you build a very strong foundation to your study of astrology/Jyotish. And for your personal journey, the more you understand about your life’s foundation and building blocks through your chart the more free you will feel. You will be able live a more balanced and happier life instead of crying over, ‘why did this happen to me?’.

Combust and caizimi planets

The Sun is the source of all energy in a horoscope. And just like his energies as in the skies can scorch, his energies in the horoscope can scorch any other planet which gets too close to him. And since the zodiac is essentially a circle and the grahas are also spherical objects the distance where the sun gets too close for comfort is measured in degrees.

If you have your horoscope with you check out the location in degrees of the Sun and the planets nearest to him as below to check if they are combust. If you want a handy app to calculate your horoscope, download any of the phone apps for vedic astrology. For android I have found “Hindu calendar” by developer “Alok Mandavgane” and for iphones “Drik panchang” by developer “Adarsh apps” to be quite accurate and user friendly.

  • Mars if located in the horoscope either 17 degrees before or after the Sun will be scorched by the Suns energy.
  • Mercury – 14 degrees  (12 degrees when retrograde)
  • Venus – 10 degrees (8 degrees when retrograde)
  • Jupiter – 11 degrees
  • Saturn – 15 degrees
  • Moon – 12 degrees is considered by some astrologers to be combust. The other opinion is that moon cannot be combust. However 12 degrees from Sun, the moon is on a Amavasya, no moon visible in the skies. The implications of an amavasya birth are more severe so its immaterial if the moon is theoretically combust or not.
  • The lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu do not become combust or anything as they are just geometrical points on the ecliptic. But if they intersect with the Sun on a full moon or no moon days they lead to eclipses which is an even more astrologically significant phenomenon.

The intensity of the burn and blinding of the planets varies if the Sun is a malefic or benefic for the horosope. And if the sun and the scorched planet receives benefic or malefic aspects from other planets in the horoscope. The planets, who have entered the region within 1 degree of the Sun, are practically ashes, or “asta”. But there is an interesting caizmi phenomenon where the planet is within the orb of the sun within 17seconds of the sun. In this case it is like the planet is sitting on the lap of the king/Sun. The Sun has in a way absorbed the other planet and can at times express the attributes of that planet to extraordinary heights. In this rare event the attributes of the planet may even be enhanced beyond normal limits and would ultimately be beneficial.

Now lets check out some of the interesting effects of combust planets. These are extreme effects which can be modualted by aspects. Aspects from benefics will make it better and malefics will make it worse.

  • Combust Mars – You have little awareness of the impact of your actions on others, ie from your perspective, the victim is invisible. You are autocratic with a strongly competitive and even violent style of expressing yourself. You will never leave any opportunity to show or exercise your power, You are very proud of your power and positions.
  • Combust Moon –  You will project your own thoughts and beliefs upon others, you believe that your own perceptions are true because they are more ethical or brilliant. You have stronger rational abilities and lesser emotional perception.
  • Combust Mercury – You are clever but distinctively self-focused. You prefer to talk about esoteric topics, politics, drama and genius. Your conversation is self-referential. But your personal experience is less integrated with the experience of others. You may be forgetful or suffer memory loss
  • Combust Jupiter – You and your father always play the center stage. You have no pre malice but you are simply not aware of the needs of your students. You are unaware of the feelings of teachers/preceptors and those who are dependant on their religious faiths. Your own philosophy is rather shallow and based only on own personal experiences. You do not accommodate the philosophical views of others. You have multiple father-figures.
  • Combust Venus – Sun is a very individual graha and Venus is balance but both are arch enemies. You are brilliantly intelligent and physically beautiful, may be a film star perhaps. You behave erratically in relationships, have a strange fashion sense. Your relations are always out of balance and your taste in partners is also erratic.
  • Combust Saturn – You resist creativity, your intelligence and willpower is constrained. Saturn is social convention and Sun is individual creativity and both are bitter enemies. You have an unbalanced autocratic style of running the house. Erratic habits as you cant manage your time. You are not be able to conform to social expectations as you feel you are autocratically entitled to ignore them. Happiness from the father is reduced. Saturn is Sun’s son.

So as you see as above, if you have combust planets in your horoscope it will have a detrimental effect to some extent and you need to consciously work on your personality.

Combust graha have been weakened, blinded and burnt by the Sun. The closeness to sun causes the person to over estimate himself which leads to arrogance and then losses later. Do check your horoscope and if such a graha exists it must be strengthened. You have to consciously intend for this to happen. There will be domineering personalities as indicated by the Sun around you in your environment. These may be older father figures or males in your family or surroundings. The areas of life indicated by the combust plants always suffer from some interference from the father. You have to try to be positive and independent here. Try to develop some activities away from such dominating persons in your life. Live separately, start a separate business etc as you can.

And finally an astrological remedy. If you are so inclined you can light a small copper lamp with sesame oil and cotton wick on the day of your combust planet and recite its beej mantra. This act with Intention will add to its energies and help you express yourself.

The energy of Twilights

Twilight is the realm of the between’s, neither day not night, a bit of both. It just like two watercolors mixing, the color you get contains these two but in itself something new. So what do you get when you mix the energies of the day and the night?

In India, 45minutes before and after sunset/sunrise is cosidered to be the sandhyakaal/twilight. This time is an ideal time for doing sandhyapuja, gayatri puja, Yadnyas/fire rituals, worshipping the Sun, giving arghya to the Sun, agnihotra is the most important one, but even marriages are performed at the evening twilight. You can do your energy work in the twilights, either for taking in positive energy or for letting out negative energy.

During this twilight the energies of the other dimensions also merge with our world, so it is possible that you may sense or see ghosts, spirits and other dimensional beings during this period. In places where human disturbances are limited, eg small hamlets in the forests, mothers do not allow the young children out and especially women don’t go out with their hair unbound.

In Sanatan Dharm, the Light ज्योति is considered to be the the divine principle of life and source of intelligence. This light is as simple as the light of our Sun which we see with our 2 eyes or the light of the Inner Sun which we see with our third eye in Dhyan. Our right eye represents the Sun/day and our left eye represents the Moon/night. Between these two is the limit of the day and the night, the twilight, the sandhya, our third eye/ajnya chakra. It is in this sandhya that you will see the Inner Light, only if you look deep with faith.

If you want to utilize the energies of the twilight, here is a very simple way. At dawn or dusk, light a small copper lamp with sesame oil and cotton wick, with this mantra, “Om deepjyoti parabrahma, deepjyoti janardana, deepo hara tu may papam, sandhya deepah namostute, Om”. If you do not have this lamp things, light a candle at least, but then keep your Intention super-charged!

I had the opportunity to travel to St.Petersberg, Russia last year were I saw that the twilight continues for hours with the sun on the horizon which does not set. The people living in northern areas of Russia have a unique chance to do energy work for hours. I hope they become more self aware make the most of it.

Om, The Supreme Intelligence is the divine principle of life. The energy which “excites” is the divine principle of life. The energy which “takes away” may take away my negative energies. Thus I bow down to the divine principle of life and source of intelligence which is seen in the sandhya/twilight.

Evil fathers, astrologically

Just like the mother, the father is equally a very important source of stability for the child. If the mother confers emotional stability the father grants physical stability. Mothers can be negligent, and fathers can be indifferent.

In a horoscope, the 9th house determines the parental figures, the fathers brothers, the grandfathers, the males in the fathers family, the ancestors as a group. But the actual physical father is defined by the 10th house. There are differing opinions on this distinction but this is what I have actually seen in my practice. Also it is logical as the 4th house is the mother’s and the house opposite that the 10th is the father’s.

In addition to the 10th house lord, planets placed in the the 10th house, the Sun is the natural pitrukaraka, significator of the father. As the moon/mother provides up with emotional stability the sun/father provides us with a physical stability, place in the society, and is linked with our ego.

Fathers are meant to be strict and to discipline, (this function is linked with Saturn in the horoscope). Most fathers do it and with pride in their children. They work hard so as to provide for the child and do love in there own rather distant way. Being a father is an enormous responsibility and most of us do it willingly as we are caring for our own blood, our genetic link to the next generation.

Evil fathers, astrologically

But there are fathers who really dont care and may even be abusive to their children. One of my clients is such an example. His birth horoscope is quite good to look at. Sun in Aries in the 10th house with the lord of the 10th, Mars in the Ascendent Cancer (Sun in Aries is exalted, highest energy state and Mars in Cancer is debilitated, lowest energy state). The father is immensely rich with several businesses, a big house and even takes time to look after the son, buy him the necessities of life. But has never given the son money, never even as a gift. Offers money often but never gives. Likes keeping the sons dependent on his largesse like a cat and mouse game. In the Indian context his behaviour is out of character as Indian parents generally fulfil the children’s demands of laptops and clothes, shoes and stuff. There is no concept of children working during the holidays or in part time jobs like in the western countries. But I was curious as the basic horoscope did show an exalted Sun to offset the debilitated Mars. So I checked the 9th divisional chart/Navamsha. The Navamsha chart is a one step deeper into your birth horoscope and can be used to map out the inner energies of the graha. In this Navamsha chart, the exalted Sun of Aries actually shifted to Libra thus was debilitated. Thus this father was superficially good but had a negative core of energy and liked hurting his son on the psychological (Mars in Cancer) level.

The 6th house is the house of debts, disease, arguments, enemies and so if the pitrukaraka (determinant of the father), the 10th house lord or the Sun or even Saturn is placed here in the birth horoscope, you can work out which way this relationship is going to go.

The 8th house is the house of death, benefits from other’s death, medical operations, accidents, secrets and routes. If the pitrukarak graha are located here the child may be denied a fathers love either by death or absence of the father. The reason for the absence may be anything, the father may actually be working double shifts to support the family so not available to the child. He may love his child but the child can never experience it because there is no opportunity, no time. So from the perception of the child the father never loved him.

The 12th house is the house of the unknowns, of losses, of the subconscious and the unconscious. Somethings which we never know in our waking state. If the pitrukaraka/agents representing the father, end up in this house again the “father experience” is something the child will never know in his conscious life, though in his dreams in his subconscious states he may receive guidance from paternal figures. It is very traumatising for young children to cope with neglect and abuse from the father, affecting his very personality, his courage and confidence and the way he handles people and situations. One wishes for fatherly love but time cannot come back. And even when one grows up, still there in a tiny corner of the heart where lies a neglected child. And you can never tell this out aloud as no one would understand and may even say that you are ungrateful thus deepening the initial hurt.

But you can heal yourself. If you ever feel in your inner most heart that you have never received your fathers love, do this one thing, write out a list of all the things you imagine a fathers love would mean. Maybe eating an icecream together? Maybe your dad teaching you to ride a bicycle? Dad helping you with your homework? Cuddling you as you go to sleep? Maybe just hugging you hard and saying “I love you my precious child!”. Keep this list and then when you become a father yourself do this all as a father with your child. And when you see your young child laugh, laugh with him both as a father and that long-ago child that was you.

Or is you have been initiated to Reiki, you can this sequence of hon sha zhe so nen, dai ko mu, cho ku re, sei hei ki, hon sha zhe sho nen to heal your heart of the past trauma. Do it regularly for 21 days for at least 5 minutes everyday to feel the difference.

Doing these healings may or may not repair your relationship with your own father, the source of your childhood hurt. But it will definitely free you from the excess baggage and allow you to be more hopeful and enjoy your relationship with your own child.

Your challenge for this life is, you were never shown an example of what a loving father is like, but you have to learn from your experience, to learn from the negative example, to ace your personal test.

To accept and learn from your experiences is the whole purpose of this life. That and ensuring that the hurts you received from others are never handed out by your own heart to others.

Analysing transits of the Moon

One of my major reasons for writing this blog was to inspire everyone to take control of their own lives and try, really try to make it better on a deep internal level.

And I do not mean this in the materialistic physical sense. Buying a new car would be so awesome and would definitely make you happy but this this happiness will evaporate the instant you see a better car model on the streets.

It is so easy to blame too. I can blame my mom for not giving me tasty food to eat as a child or blame my husband for not taking me for a vacation, or even worse blame my child for creating a nuisance just when I want to sleep.

My clients invariably blame their horoscopes. “This Saturn is in this house and that is causing my problems!”. And most of the astrologers you meet will also ditto this very same line. But why do you forget that the horoscope charts out the moment when You were born! You Chose to be born at that instant of time and space. It is Your Own Choice. We have so many unresolved and unbalanced karmas to go through and naturally this huge quantum cannot be gone through in one life. We take a series of lives where we work off certian portions of this accumulated stuff. So your horoscope just shows you in black and white what you have chosen for yourself in this life. I hope all of you must have seen how your horoscope looks like? If not, I strongly suggest you use any of the free sites on the Internet to check how it looks like. (I am a Vedic/Indian astrologer so whatever I write on will be based on this system.)

The moon in the horoscope is the primary determinant of your emotional state. If you are in a happy place emotionally the disappointments of life seem insignificant but if you are already under an emotional stress even the tinest upsets will shatter your heart. It is all about perspective, your birth moon.

So how do you know what your moon is upto today. Here is a very tiny astrology lesson which can help you set your mindset for the day. And it will take only 1 minute of your time now and then 5 seconds everyday. This is how your mindset changes with the transits of the moon. The moon is the fastest graha moving through the 360 degrees of the zodiac in 28 days flat.

Check out in your birth horoscope, which sign your birth moon occupies and mark out the 6th, 8th, and 12th signs from this. If your birth moon is in Aries then the 6th would be Virgo, counting Aries itself as one, Taurus as two, Gemini as three, onwards. Scorpio would be 8th and Pisces would be the 12th.  Now download any of the phone apps for vedic astrology. For android I have found “Hindu calendar” by developer “Alok Mandavgane” and for iphones “Drik panchang” by developer “Adarsh apps” to be quite accurate and user friendly.

Check out the present position of the Moon in the sky from the Panchang submenu. If the current day’s moon is in your 6th, 8th and 12th signs which you have counted above, be mentally prepared for possible unpleasantness.

Now for the pleasant days, count the 1st and 11th from your birth moon sign/rashi, for this example it would be Aries itself as 1st and Aquarius as the 11th. When the current moon is in any of these signs rest assured that the day will be generally quite pleasant. The remaining days of the month will be average ones generally.

The Moon’s Transit from birth Moon sign Rasi, some very general readings.

  • 1st house i.e. the same sign as your birth Moon sign – Good to Excellent
    • Comforts, good mood, good health, good time in office/home
  • 2nd house – Average to Bad
    • some stress caused by family/friends, unnecessary expenditures
  • 3rd house – Average to Good
    • Gains, happiness, some monetary benefits, some skills learnt/used, good work in office/business
  • 4th house – Average to Bad
    • Unnecessary travelling, disturbance to peace of mind,
  • 5th house – Average to Bad
  • Arguments, heated discussions, heat related small health issues
  • 6th house – Bad to Worse
    • illness, physical fatigue, arguments, needless money spent
  • 7th house – Average to Good
    • Respect, gains, good times spent with partners business/personal.
  • 8th house – Bad to Worse
    • Losses, tension, worries, traffic, injuries, ill health
  • 9th house – Average to Bad
    • Mental uneasiness, needs help from seniors/teachers
  • 10th house – Average to Good
    • Success, gains, good times in office or things related to social status
  • 11th house – Good to Excellent
    • Prosperity, comforts, gains, good health, good mood and conducive surroundings
  • 12th house – Bad to Worse
  • Injuries, expenditure, sadness, loneliness

And the major reason that I want you to do this small baby exercise is that you will…

  1. check out your birth horoscope
  2. find the position of moon in it
  3. try to count the rashis from your moon rashi
  4. get in the habit of checking the current moon sign for the day (it changes every 2.25days)
  5. do a small prediction for yourself
  6. be mindful of your thought process throughout the day
  7. get interested in astrology after a few days, I mean really interested and soon be on your way to learning astrology yourself.

So here is your first step at learning practical astrology. Do try it.

analysing transits of the moon

Eclipses and their energy

Eclipses are just the 2 solar/lunar where Rahu/Ketu eclipse/hide the SunMoon. Just this one simple statement but with such staggering implications.

There are people now in this modern world who go eclipse spotting and love watching the eclipse and taking photos of the “red moon” or the “diamond ring”, but there are still those people who still follow the ancient instructions on not going out and exposing oneself to the direct rays of the eclipse and doing pujas and jaaps.

Rahu – North node is the forces which attract you subconsciously for this life, the tendencies that you were born with. The desires linked to the karma you decided to resolve in this life.

Ketu – South node is what you are apathetic to in this life, in short the desires you have resolved in your past lives. These now, do not interest or even disinterest you in this life. So you are apathetic to these objects.

Eclipses and their energy

Rahu and Ketu together are the combined influence of Earth on the individual. In astrology we have all the other planets, the earth’s satellite, the Moon, our personal star, the Sun, the other stars as the 27 constellations and every possible influence but astrology seemingly misses out the Earth herself. But no, Rahu-Ketu is the influence that the Earth has on the individual. i.e. the real reason we take birth is Rahu/Ketu, the astral planets.

Geometrically Rahu/Ketu are the points where the orbit of the moon cuts the ecliptic and always 180 degrees apart. In simple words the earth is tilted about its axis by 23.4 degrees. So this tilt gives rise to a lot of things from seasons to Rahu-Ketu.

Sun is our personal energy, irrespective of the individual horoscopes and the placement of the Ascendent/ Moon sign/sun sign, the Sun represents the source of our Energy, our physical-ness, our tendency to dominate, to hold the center stage, our personal charisma, our Ego. The placement of the Sun in turn energizes all the other planets and houses (bhavas) of the horoscope. A well placed Sun generally almost always raises the standard of the horoscope.

Moon is the counterpoint to the Sun, the subconscious, the emotions, the receptivity, the depths of the soul. It indicates our spiritual development and also our deepest wishes and darkest fears. A well placed moon in a horoscope can give artistic genius, or turn you into a spiritual Guru and on the other hand a badly placed moon can lead to insanity even.

During an eclipse do remember that both Sun and Moon are interacting with Rahu/ Ketu. During a solar eclipse, on an amavasya, the Sun will be exactly on the same degree as Rahu or Ketu. On a lunar eclipse, on a purnima the Moon will be on the exact same degree as either Rahu or Ketu and the Sun (180 degrees away) will be interacting with the other Node 180 degrees away too.

So the interactions of Rahu-Ketu with the Sun-Moon during an eclipse can trigger deep seated karma which will be brought up to the surface for resolution. Again the eclipse event releases energies which can be positive or negative for a particular individual depending on the individual birth horoscope and the current placement of the planets in the sky in relation to the at birth placements. To make things bearable and to avoid a sudden karmic attack the ancients through astrology prescribed a set of activities to be followed during an eclipse.

  1. Fasting – To not overload the digestive system with food.
  2. Bathing with water from the Ganga or with water energised with mantras.
  3. Wearing natural fabrics like cotton, silk – again for their positive protective energies.
  4. Doing some spiritual practice – this is again to invoke specific energies which will be useful in either mitigating the harmful energies of the eclipse or harnessing the favourable energies of the eclipse. The following can be easily done by all persons –
    • Chanting mantras like Gayatri mantra, Mahamrutunjaya mantra, surya beej mantra, chandra beej mantra, rahu beej mantra, ketu beej mantra. Repeat each mantra 108 times.
    • I have done 108 jaap of sri sukta too, just that it takes about 3 hours and you cant stop or drink water or speak anything else or even get up from your asan while you are doing it. My brother prefers Devi Atharvashirsha which he repeats 27 times.
    • If you like doing havans a simple havan using the above mantras by replacing the “namah” by “swaha” for the beej mantras of surya, chandra, rahu and ketu. A mahamrutunjaya Homa can be performed by using the mahamrutunjaya homa mantra variation.
    • Reading Durga saptashati (Devi Mahatmya) or the Bhagwad Gita.
    • Doing dhyan. Dhyan is actually one of the best activities that you can do during an eclipse.

So be prepared for the next time an eclipse shows up. Do not lose even one minute of these special periods. Do remember these eclipse events are high energy and are a one-off opportunity for us to capitalize on their energies for balancing our karma.

Eclipses and their energy
