The Dark and bright halves – Part 2

This is a continued post from part 1 here. Do read it first so that this continuation makes sense.

If you have 5 or more planets in this ‘bright’ half of the zodiac you have the option to choose. You are not running on auto-pilot, you can do some course corrections or take advantage of the situations presented to you. Here if your ascendant lord, Sun and Moon are also in the bright half you also have the intelligence and awareness to choose the better path. You will be put in situations where you will be required to choose. It is like a test, if you can choose well you get a one up but if you choose the worse option, you have created more karma to work through.

Now let’s add one more interpretation of the ‘dark/bright’ halves.

  • The sub-conscious half was chosen by your higher self at the moment of birth. The higher self controls this half and works through it. And its exclusive goal is the spiritual, it wants to work towards the higher consciousness. Every action by the dark half is directed to this ultimate goal. You might feel it to be happy or unfavourable as per your conscious perceptions, but you can’t do much about it. It is something like an avalanche, once triggered at birth, there is nothing much that one can choose about its course.
  • The bright half gives the conscious mind the option of choice. This can be considered as a course-correction or an opportunity to grab at options which will be presented to you in life. The background potential will be supplied by the dark half as usual. And the background always wants to move towards the higher consciousness. But here you have the conscious choice of playing the Game of creation some more or going Home. Free will does exist. There is nothing wrong/ right just the action and its inevitable consequence.

We have seen how individual choice is made possible in the 7th house. The typical nature of the 7th half-dark and half-bright, makes this house rather dangerous. Its choices must be navigated carefully. The mind wants to consciously choose in the current moment but the inherent choice of the birth moment cannot be ignored. The moment of evening twilight, generally malevolent energies influence the conscious mind. But the sub-conscious is always alert, it wants only those influences which will take it higher spiritually. This is a very subtle conflict with very high stakes. That is why we astrologers get so many questions related to partnerships -marriage and business!

12c8beea8ca263366dbc4ea4bd9f5b88

Then we reach the 8th house. The house of sudden catastrophic transformations, surgeries, serious diseases, reproductive organs, accidents, the process of physical death, occult etc. If there are benefics here they are subdued, as overtly auspicious things cause you to change internally in unexpected manner. But if there are malefics here they give unpredictable results, cruelty coupled with occult?, war linked with spirituality?, almost always an unsatisfying marriage/business venture, but an endurance for the spiritual. Here you have the background of the sub-conscious as chosen at birth but now you can do something about it. If your chart shows the possibility of accidents, maybe you can train yourself to drive safely so as to reduce the intensity/chances. Or if you know you might get in-laws who will try to use you, you might keep them at a distance from the start. Or if you know that you have a potential for the occult, maybe you can actively learn more about it. If you know that death will be in a certain way, you can keep yourself calm and make the most of the energy of the transformation. The 8th is ultimately a part of the Moksh trikon.

The 9th house, this is a part of the Dharma trikon, 1-5-9 houses, so should be analysed carefully. This house will give all material necessities for a comfortable life, at whatever level you have chosen. The expectation here is if you are materially comfortable, you will naturally gravitate towards the spiritual. Optimism, benevolence, divine blessings, luck, your past lives ‘auspicious benefits’ etc. You have this backup with you but how to express it and work with it can be your choice. Changes in your inner most psyche as per your karmic back-up, slowly change you on the outside too, more philosophical, more mature, more kind, you become an enabling senior, a patron yourself. Here benefic planets give very auspicious results but malefics also do not harm much. You will receive spiritual gifts and you are expected to give them onward. (Highest possibility exists for Cancer ascendant. If exalted Venus occupies the 9th house Pisces. If the rest of the chart supports and the person chooses this path. This person can realise Himself and help others too.)

The 10th house is your link to your society, profession, salary income, birth father, social mobility, etc, Arth trikon. Some of this is naturally as per your background’s dark half. But here you will be put into situations where you will have to choose and act, work, perform, produce, labour, do your karmic obligations. This action is obligatory as per your past lives, but if you are in a karma-yoni you do have some option on how you want to do it. If you choose to avoid doing it altogether, then you will have to complete the pendency in some future life, as it is your obligatory action. Any planet in this house will increase scope for action. They will add their power to the house, ‘activate it’, giving you more platforms and opportunities to work. Any planet in this house generally performs well. This is the zenith, the degree at the top of the head. Any action you take here will have its effect on your current and future lives. You can gain the highest goals here. And since it is the bright half, you can do some course corrections, the action does not percolate immediately into the subconscious like the 7th house.

Then the 11th house of gains. A part of the Kama trikon. Here you will be granted opportunities to gain in every way possible. Wealth, friend-circle, like-minded groups, good-will, etc are linked here. This gain is essentially the gain linked to your personal essence, it feels good on all levels. You come out of your personal limitations, the limits defined by your personal ego here. As you socialise, make friends, join like minded groups, interact, accept every sort of gains from the 11th, you realise that you are much more. You expand in every way, become socially conscious to begin with and later this consciousness expands even more as it gains more directions. The choice from the material to the spiritual is very much available here. Practically every planet here gives favourable results. If you have more planets here you will be given that many more and diverse opportunities to gain.

The 12th house is a rather cryptic house. The planets which have risen a couple of hours before your birth. You can interpret this house in two ways. One it represents the influence of the energies of the journey to pitrulok to martyalok, ie the journey your soul made from the dimension of the spirits to the dimension of the living. Or the impact of your immediate past life on your current life. Second it represents the immediate position of your soul after your physical death, the route you will take back to the pitrulok (Moksh trikon). All kinds of outward travel, expenses, the genius and creativity of the dying moment, the meditative states and also the moments which you spend dreaming and in deep sleep. You have no conscious control over how these energies work. But you can direct these energies. At the moment of death, you can consciously propel yourself to higher energy states. You can harness the energies of the other states to complete your karmic baggage. You can do meditative practices with the intention of achieving Moksh (this is why Venus is exalted in the natural 12th house of the zodiac). You can increase your intuitive power and use your sub-conscious actively. This is naturally dependant on the potential of your sub-conscious half but you do have some choice in the matter.

280872136b39b3ab4d5ef34054ed6bf7

If you do a quick analysis with the trikons. Arth trikon is more in the subconscious side. Moksh trikon is more in the conscious side. Dharma and Kama trikon are equally placed half/half. (The 1st and 7th houses are different).

  • Dharma trikon – 1-5-9 houses
  • Arth trikon – 2-6-10 houses
  • Kama trikon – 3-7-11 houses
  • Moksh trikon – 4-8-12 houses

Arth trikon – The things which give your life meaning are more linked to the sub-conscious programming, your past lives decide this more. Two houses out of the three lie in the dark side. Eg if you have been doing intense spiritual practice for 90% of your past lives, then in this life too this will give most meaning to your life. Or if you have been a soldier for 80% of your past lives, then in this life too the army will beckon. You cannot dismiss these ‘arth’ ‘meaningful’ things so easily as they are connected to your past lives inevitable results, you can maybe modulate them a bit, eg if not a soldier, you can be an army doctor?

Moksh trikon – The final release from illusions is more on the conscious side. If you want to release yourself from anything, it requires conscious efforts. 33% will be your back-up from the sub-conscious of the past lives but remaining effort has to be consciously put in. This applies to Moksh, the final release but also the release from other things. Eg you have never been given maternal love in 80% of your past lives, it is a negative binding. So to release yourself from this baggage, you have to consciously try, one way is helping orphaned children. Another example, if you didn’t find a good Guru or were exploited by someone who pretended to be one, it is a negative baggage, so try to teach others as you wanted to be, learn the highest knowledge and give it to others, this will set you free.

Dharma trikon – I have written a lot on the 1st house in my past few posts so not repeating all that. The personal essence, subconscious tendencies/ genius and karmic ‘auspicious benefits’ make this trikon.

Kama trikon – I have written a lot on the 7th house also, its inherent danger, its half dark/ bright sides etc so not repeating this either. It is the evolution of the narrow definition of ‘desire’ into the expanded infinite ‘highest desire’, via a treacherous illusion of free will and choice.

There are so many ways of pulling information from your horoscope, do explore them all, you will get to know yourself better. We generally use astrology to know about our education, business, wealth, health, family/children etc. This is the simpler way of using this Ved-ang Jyotish. The ultimate objective of Jyotish is always Self-illumination.

Lunar eclipse 10th Jan 2020

The first eclipse of the year 2020 is coming up on the night of 10th / 11th  Jan. It is a penumbral lunar eclipse, visible in India from about 22:35 pm to 2:40 am Indian time. It will have its effect throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia etc.

It is just a penumbral eclipse and the shadowing of the moon will be extremely faint. There are no specific rituals that need be performed as such. During the actual eclipse if you feel like it you can perform some spiritual practice or do mantra jaap of Rahu/Ketu and Sun/Moon or Gayatri or whatever you feel like. However pregnant women should take care also consult your doctor and if possible avoid giving birth during this time. A pre-eclipse time of 9 hours is considered the ‘sutak’ period for a lunar eclipse. People avoid doing auspicious activities during this period. Generally a fast is observed or some eclipse-specific pujas are performed during the sutak period. For a solar eclipse the sutak period is 12hours before the solar disc starts getting occulted.

A lunar eclipse needs only the Sun and the Moon to be opposite each other with Rahu/Ketu. So in this scenario only those few people whose ascendant or birth Moon sign is Leo, Cancer and the sign axis in which the eclipse is occurring would be affected. But this time, in addition we have Saturn Jupiter Mercury caught up in this eclipse energy and are combust! Practically 80% of the population will see something of these energies generated affecting their life. As it is you can see world events have gone very erratic in these times.

Lunar eclipse 10th Jan 2020

Generally a penumbral lunar eclipse has limited energy so its effects are also rather limited. The main umbral eclipse where the Moon is visibly occulted is the real thing. But this time, though the eclipse is weak, it is just one more energy event in a sequence of events since Nov 2019 and which will continue till 22nd Jan 2020. The eclipse is occurring in the over-loaded Gemini-Sagittarius axis,

  • Rahu is going to eclipse the Moon in Gemini. Gemini belongs to Mercury. Gemini is a typical house, the 3rd natural house of the zodiac and has the potential to go either way.
  • Ketu is with the Sun, Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury in Sagittarius. Also Jupiter, Mercury and Saturn are combust, ‘evaporated’ by the Sun. The Sun has taken in all the qualities of these planets and has become a ‘mixed-up-Sun’, combustion of planets changes the quality of the Sun. Sagittarius has been bearing the brunt of all this energy for quite some time now. Their this Sade-sati phase has been quite bad despite Jupiter being there.
  • Mars will be aspecting Rahu+Moon with his 8th house aspect. This is an intense aspect can trigger rash behaviour.
  • We have just had a humongous solar eclipse on 26th Dec 2019. I have written several posts on this energy event.
  • The nodes are in the forward motion and are almost stationary. This indicates past karmas are moving very fast, almost everyone is caught in a whirl of events over which there is no control.
  • Only Venus is away from all this, the only graha who is not involved. However his Taurus sign is a bit uncomfortable as Sagittarius is 8th from it, so triggering fast sudden changes in their lives.

People with Gemini or Sagittarius as their ascendant or Moon sign should be careful. To some extent Taurus, Cancer,  Scorpio and Capricorn signs also should take care. Some major changes are in the offing. For the rest of the signs the results are neutral. For Aries and Libra, if the rest of the chart supports, these two signs can benefit during this period.

People in the planetary Dasha of Moon eg Vimshottari Moon Mahadasha or Moon antardasha. Or if sign-based dashas are applicable to you, then those of you in the Dasha periods of Gemini or Sagittarius signs. If you can use the Kaalchakra dasha, then those with Gemini or Sagittarius signs Deha or Jiv rashis will be disturbed. All these people should expect significant changes in life in Jan-Feb 2020.

Some of the issues which can be triggered by this eclipse are as follows. These are general readings, the intensity will depend on the rest of the birth chart and the math. But these results will be seen at some level or the other, mild or intense everyone will experience these.

Respiratory problems, allergies, nervous issues are possible. Arguments with siblings, misunderstandings with teammates or office colleagues are possible. Take care to complete your office work in time. At home, there is a high chance of differences with the husband/wife leading to temporary separations. You might feel ‘out of tune’ with your best friends. Avoid taking major issues related to relationships till Jan end, ie proposals, engagements, marriages, separations or divorce. You might feel stressed out emotionally and mentally. Psychological issues and depression are likely for some. Take care of your money, relationships and health. Misunderstandings, rumours or even lying and cheating is possible, so think logically before you act. Avoid loose talk and gossip. Engaging in financial speculations can be risky at present. Risky behaviour, rash driving, trying antics while swimming can get dangerous.  Vehicles and electrical equipment can refuse to cooperate adding to the overall stress energy.

There are some things you can actively do to re-direct the energies swirling around you. Reading new books or writing something always works. You might just chance on that idea for a new book or something genius. Try to find common ground with other people, it might take some effort but do it. Go out for a walk or try and do something new, avoid sitting alone with your thoughts. Thoughts can be erratic or depressive during this period. De-clutter or do some spring-cleaning, rearrange your desk your room furniture or your wardrobe. There are changes due in the near future, try to keep your mind flexible. Avoid getting overly emotional, do not insult anyone. Mercury is combust and there is an eclipse in his Gemini, whatever you say can magnify and later backfire.

Again, by itself this lunar eclipse is not that powerful but can be the last straw for the over-loaded Gemini-Sagittarius axis people.

Lunar eclipse 10th Jan 2020

Moon in Cancer, power to your emotions

Moon-Chandra in the owner of Cancer-Karka, it is his swa-kshetra. Cancer is a watery sign, a moveable sign, a sign with the Satvik gun dominant. Satva gun means you are basically neutral. The actions of others evoke a reaction in you. The birth Moon placed here is very comfortable unless influenced by malefics or placed in the dusham-sthan, the houses of turmoil, the 6th, the 8th or the 12th (to some extent in the 3rd too).

Moon in Cancer, power to your emotions

Intense yearnings. You give power to your emotions. You are motivated by emotional needs. Your actions are based on the emotional context always and perhaps habit. You are kind, possessive, sensitive, sympathetic. You are possessive of your loved ones and can be jealous at times. You love deeply as your watery depths. But you expect gratitude in return of your love. If you do not receive this you can get bitter.

Sustained energies. You are quite receptive to new ideas and like interactions with others. Social standing and family history, traditions and home culture is important to you. As a child, you expect love from your parents and also love your children later. You can get over-protective, which can cause suffocation to your loved ones. You are quite stoic and can face problems with courage. You can sacrifice yourself for your loved ones. You get along well with the earthy types.

You like smoothness. To relax you can take up activities which are linked to water, to flowing, feelings and emotions. You need emotional involvement in whatever you are doing. You need the feelings, so choose some activities which allow you to experience.

You are receptive. This can easily be converted to sensitivity, later over-sensitivity. You are highly vulnerable to hurt, as your conscious as well as sub-conscious self absorbs the energy of the hurt. So think, take a few deep breaths before you let your emotions dominate you.

Social interactions are desirable. The spouse has Saturnine qualities, more into work, profession, social mobility, earning money etc. This is in a way good as he/she does not feel and express emotionally as you do. This might seem like a mis-match in the initial stages of marriage, but works out for the best with time. You are more into conservation of the traditions and security of the home life. If you both understand how beautifully you make a unified whole the marriage will be successful. In a marriage both need to be compatible not similar.

Medical problems. Typically connected to the cold and the fluids of the body.  Organs which can be affected are the lungs, digestion, rheumatism (fluid between the joints). Diseases are of the ‘clinging’ type, it takes time to heal completely.

Considered to be self-repressive. But it means that you are contained more within. You do not allow yourself to project your essential energy outwards. If you do you do this only after precautions and forethought. You are silent about your own self. The instinct for self-protection, self-defence is so strong that you rarely let let down your guard. Only the rare few whom you trust will see your real emotions. The need for privacy is extremely strong. You rarely trust. You are instinctive and you can gauge a person based on his astral and sub-conscious self. You pick up subtle nuances about the person before you which others wont even notice. ‘Feeling’ is not a completely rational act, there is a sub-conscious component to emotions always. You are intensive, retrospective and have the enormous energy of the astral at your disposal. Your need for emotional safety is never fulfilled.

Moon in Cancer, power to your emotions

Linked to the past. Moon represents the sum of all your incarnations, past, present, future, parallel. You are intensely involved in your this astral sum. Cancer is a fixed sign, so though seen as passive, you are quite capable of concentrated action. However your action is always based on the basis of your past experiences.

Exceptionally impressionable, you can deeply absorb outside influences. Often you are unaware of the depths of your own emotions. You may seem calm on the surface but there can be a storm secretly brewing inside. You rarely lose your temper, but when you do, you are spectacular in your rage!

Moon is a reflection of the Sun. Here the reflection is linked to your personal soul, everything is personal is this sign. You take things personally, which adds to your sensitivity. If such a Moon gives inauspicious results, several things can go wrong. Eg excessive jealousy of spouse’s interaction with his parents, will make you separate him from his parents!

The Vimshottari Moon Mahadasha period will naturally bring your focus to your home, maternal figures, culture, nutrition, etc. But it is often damaging to the health unless the Moon is supported by benefic influence.

Spiritual practice is a must for the watery Moon signs. This brings awareness. Part of yourself is submerged in the sub-conscious, you are unaware of this aspect of yourself. If you a regular practice where you focus at your third eye chakra and breath, you will be more aware of this inner hidden aspect of your personality. You can use your own resources better. Your over-sensitivity, compulsive behaviours, baseless-fears and sometimes confusing emotional responses will be more understandable. Water has no shape, it flows. Water cannot be stopped, it yields and in it, is its strength. Firmness is necessary to channelise it. If you can shape the direction of your flow and sustain it, you can make the most of your essential nature!

A soul’s deepest yearning is ultimately Moksh, realisation of the Ultimate. You know that you have to protect yourself from the external interference and influences. You know that the inner calm is necessary. You are capable of subtle reflection. You instinctively move in the right direction. You can focus and sustain your efforts despite hurdles and delays. You subconsciously know that even if the process is painful, the end result if worth it.

Cancer is composed of the three Nakshatra, lunar mansions named Punarvasu, Pushya and Asleysha. The nakshatras of all the three watery signs, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are owned by the same three planets, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury.

  1. Punarvasu – influenced by Jupiter. Can be a high achiever in the material sense, but often there exists a conflict between practice and philosophy. If your Moon is in Punarvasu, you are more into learning, understanding and assimilating.
  2. Pushya – influenced by Saturn. Can be a highly esoteric placement with significant occult abilities. There are secrets known to you and you are quite secretive yourself. You may be a doctor, astrologer, tantrik etc where you are required to work with other’s secrets. In Pushya you are more into getting things regulated, getting them to work with serious discipline.
  3. Asleysha – influenced by Mercury. Struggles with internal conflicts. In Ashleysha, it can be a difficult placement as the analytical mind wars with the emotional mind. Then at the last few degrees of Asleysha the Gandant operates. A Moon in the Gandant at birth gives typical problems which need to be addressed as soon as such a baby is born.

The natural Moksh trikonis the energies of watery signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. These three signs are the most mysterious of the twelve. Moon in Cancer is about delving deep into your own subconscious to understand your own secrets.

Analysing a single placement

The Question is most important.

There are just these 9 planets/graha, the 12 houses and the 12 signs, these in all their infinite permutations and combinations will answer anything and everything about life, death and beyond. So always ask what you really want to know. If you have clear questions you will get precise answers. Sometimes I get clients who just want to know ‘what the horoscope says’, there is no real answer to this sort of question.

Analysing a single placement

For example, here is just this one placement – Libra ascendant, Venus in 5th house/Aquarius with Ketu. (Just with this, not considering their house owners and not considering Rahu) What all can you deduce from this one line? See if you can get some of these following answers! With this placement there is a potential for,

  • a highly balanced personality, disciplined, intellectual and fair nature, lucky!
  • Inferiority complex, shy, uncertain in public
  • oval face, fair or light colored hair, shorter than average stature
  • Backache always
  • problems in normal vision
  • can see ‘extra’ things with the eyes, psychic abilities, can be a tantric with significant occult abilities
  • significant access to past life experiences, will have relationships with people known from the past lives, will live in places/situations with karmic connections to the past lives and know it!
  • has no sense of personal self, detached from the personality and the environment.
  • first half of the life will go in a haze, second half (after 48yrs) will be more aware of himself
  • has no personal ‘self-love’, as cannot relate to himself in any way whatsoever, unaware of self, ‘hazed-out’.
  • Odd sense of dress and makeup. At least one thing will be out of place in the dressing style. e.g. maybe mismatched socks always.
  • life is characterised by ‘change’, there is something changing continuously, rate of change is very high
  • can engage in several marriages or affairs, will indifferent to relationships, these will be karmic in nature
  • few real friends, but will be known as a public figure by several
  • education /knowledge /wisdom will be quite impressive but the person is not bothered about his educational qualifications. Will not boast about this. Will have knowledge of the occult.
  • will have gains from various sources, several routes of wealth.
  • is capable of making connections with large numbers of people belonging to like-minded groups
  • Can get into spirituality and practice and can progress quite a lot. If this happens will worship the Devi, the feminine personified Divinity.
  • Marriage to someone significantly older or to someone who is away from home a lot
  • problems in child-birth if female chart. Even if it is a male chart, his wife will suffer during pregnancy and childbirth, surgery or something will occur.
  • Child will also have psychic abilities.
  • Will have few children and will be attached to the child. Child too will be attached to him.

This was briefly, a cursory look at one placement and you have now so much potential information about the person. All these things will happen at some point of the life. But when? And ‘how much’? You will also need to evaluate the intensity of the events. E.g will the person just wear spectacles for his life time or will he be affected by an undiagnosable medical problem to the eyes? Without this targeted reading this all will be too much and perhaps irrelevant.

  1. So the next step would be to look up the Dasha. With the Vimshottari Dasha there will be one peculiarity. Ketu Mahadasha of 7yrs is sequentially followed by Venus Mahadasha of 20yrs. So a combined seamless 27yrs of Ketu-Venus dominated period. A significant chunk of life where these results will be expressed. If the person is in this 27yrs period these above observations will be accentuated.
  2. To fine tune the timing and intensity of the readings look up the transits of Ketu and Venus. How their in-transit position is influencing their original position in the birth chart.

Now if you have the complete birth chart/ physical aspects, the birth moon chart/ psychological context and the navamsha chart D-9/ complete potential, the entire life story is open before you. So you need a definite question!

There is no good or bad placement of the planets/ houses/ signs, they just exist. In the above example, the person would have several problems but then there are so many things which are really good too. The chart is a tool, each planet/ house/ sign is a bundle of energy resonating with you. These do not control you nor do they influence you, They Are You. Unless you understand this you cannot make use of the horoscope.

The other methods of divination, like cards or runes are question oriented. The client will ask a question and you will give a definite answer. I have had clients who didn’t have questions, just a vague sense of unease. For this too, cards/ runes have a solution, there is a way you can access their subconscious mind. But it is only in astrology that you will get ‘just tell me about my chart’ type of clients. To get them to open up, you can look at the current in-transit chart and their birth chart and tell them one interesting thing about their relationship, wealth, profession or health (most clients are quite similar in this respect). And do encourage the client to ask. Help him frame a question which you can then answer. Only then will the session be fruitful for both of you.

For your self-analysis too, ask yourself questions and look for patterns in your chart which indicate the answer. Analysis requires time, a sense of intuition and a habit of reading patterns. So practice.

Effect of Retrograde planets, Saturn

Saturn is the planet most likely to be retrograde in a chart. Approx 26% of the charts you get will have Saturn in his apparent backward motion.

Retrograde planets are teachers with a different agenda. They teach you by rewinding events in your conscious life. You review and re-analyse, again and yet again. The conscious event is never directly in sharp focus, your feelings, instincts and indirect impressions add more dimensions to the experience. You may not be able to clearly express yourself in the matters ruled by the retrograde planets. A jumble of feelings, you may not be sure about what you ‘feel’ and what you should be ‘doing’. On these matters your conscious and sub-conscious are in conflict.

If you have more than one planet retrograde in your chart you will need to find out the relative strengths of each to know their relative influence on you. As a starting point you can consider the planet which has advanced most into its sign, i.e. with the highest degrees, to give more results.

Effect of Retrograde planets, Saturn

Saturn teaches you to maintain the society and helps you maintain your public/visible role in it. Saturn is the owner of the 10th and 11th house of the natural zodiac. Thus he is the natural agent of your work, profession, your birth father, your luck, gains from every aspect of your life, like-minded groups etc. (The father in the spiritual sense, the Guru, is the 9th house). Most importantly on the spiritual context, Saturn gives you the work-plan which helps rebalance your karma systematically. He keeps a tally of how much work has been done and how much more is required to balance your this life’s karma target. The strength to persevere. All of us hope and are optimistic, but the next step towards success is to work steadily without faltering, this is Saturn. On the emotional front, Saturn is often dour, forbidding, causing restrictions, constrictions and not-happiness.

On the inner levels, Saturn’s job is to reduce ‘self-ego’, the inflated sense of personal self.

A retrograde Saturn will often start with a complicated relationship with the father or people in authority who discipline you. This begins in the childhood itself so has implications throughout life. We are required to live our life with self-discipline and responsibility. Often it is the father who teaches the child the value of discipline and corrects his behaviour if required. But a child with retrograde Saturn may subconsciously resent his father and all that he teaches. He might perceive his father to be distant, not-loving, emotionally unavailable or absent.

In life, resources are limited and you need to plan and be systematic about using them. As you grow, the ability to organise life and its resources becomes even more vital. You live in a society and its norms and legal/social behaviour is important. A retrograde Saturn is sometimes a balancing act. You have to think of positive goals which support Saturn’s natural role and also his role in your personal chart. Saturn signifies society in all ways, so retrograde or not, he will find ways to make you work for the society. So over time, especially after Saturn matures at the age of 36yrs, you might find your own ways of contributing. You tend to choose an external apparent freedom which is strictly regulated by your internal self-discipline. A retrograde Saturn allows you to use your talents differently, you may work in a profession considered ‘odd’ by the society. If the chart supports, you may be an eccentric professor who thinks differently, a brilliant artist who creates unusual works, or even an astrologer! All forms of jobs and professions are Saturn.

Effect of Retrograde planets, Saturn

Saturn’s energies are turned inwards, so the conscience is always hyper-alert. This internal voice reviews every step you take and every word you speak, always, non-stop, to an extent that you might feel an underlying fear of everything you do. ‘Are you doing things the way you are you are supposed to do?’, The internal self is hyper-strict, always finding faults. This over time can lead to low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence and an inability for self-love. The solution here is to direct the energies. Try to develop your own frame of reference, Saturn will allow this. You can develop your own internal sense of self-discipline so that you are more comfortable with what you do. Try to intuitively feel what is really important to you than what you were taught is important in life. You are required to be more subjective than objective. Look for patterns not separate events.

Retrograde Saturn will work with and through the planets he is associated /conjunct /aspected by /aspecting /house owner etc with. So e.g. if he is with a direct Mercury, try to find Saturn’s subjective influence on the Mercury-linked actions you do. You might think on what society needs, a thought, an intellectual reform, you might initiate a ‘process’ for the welfare of the society, speaking out, communicating, writing! Several social reformers had a retrograde Saturn who powered their thoughts and actions. These individuals were highly convinced of the correctness of their thoughts and were considered radical by the society of that time. Retrograde Saturn does provide the internal energy to work hard, the person knows he is right and unaware of the odds, perseveres and brings about fundamental changes.

If you want to come to terms with the power of retrograde planets, you have to go through a highly introspective process. Self-reflection is key. This however happens over a life-time. As you contemplate, your powers of intuition also increase, this will lead to increased trust in your own feelings. You will be able you love yourself, ‘self-love’. Only then will the subjective, seemingly irrational influences on your psyche be gradually accepted and integrated. However odd these subconscious feelings may seem, they are a pattern which will gradually synthesise and make sense. Retrograde Saturn is a great power-house, if you can use it in the sub-conscious levels, it will manifest in your physical reality too. Try to be comfortable with these inner dialogues and self-doubts, as they will make sense eventually.
