Cancer disease astrologically,

Cancer is a disease of the entire body in a way. It is linked to dietary imbalances, acidic conditions in the body, weakened immune system, perhaps a bacterial or fungal infection which acts as a trigger, change in the normal growth behaviour of the body cells, exposure to mutagenic agents, then possibly genetically mutated cells, which then rapidly grow and consume the energy of the body weakening it dramatically often causing death of the body.

Generally it is observed that once cancer disease hits the body, life expectancy is drastically reduced and perhaps more importantly, quality of life deteriorates. From an astrological point of view, here are some of the things which are involved. (I have written a detailed post on overall medical diagnosis using astrology here.) cancerRahu’s nature is malefic, foreign, camouflage, unregulated, uncontrolled, breaking the rules, to reach his goal by any means possible. Ketu is a malefic too and represents dissociation, cut-off, and ‘wandering’, smoking habit in particular is linked to him. They both have a role in addictions and habits which are difficult to break. So both will be linked to cancer. In medical cases, Rahu/Ketu represent misdiagnosis and the disease conditions which are detected in the advanced stage, perhaps beyond treatment.

The Moon represents liquids and nutrition. It is said that mucus in the body is necessary for growth of these cells. These cells use up the nutrition meant for the overall body. Sugary foods and milk products add to the problem. In most cases mental strength of the person is decisive in pulling him out of medical problems, the energy of thought and positive thinking can work. Thus the role of Moon is important. A well placed Mercury too will help boost the mental morale and also help in faster and correct diagnosis. Getting the appropriate medical treatment at the appropriate time is essential.

Mars represents blood, thus red blood cells and bone marrow. Surgeries and invasive and painful operative procedures are his. Acidity in the body can be created by Mars and also increased by a malefic SunSaturn is another malefic who governs the ‘endurance’ and ‘ageing’ of the physical body, thus will be involved in all prolonged diseases including cancer.

Jupiter, is a benefic but represents expansion in every way possible. If he by chance indicates ‘expansion of disease’ he can indicate cancer. Also if he becomes a functional malefic in the chart, his role should be examined in detail. Venus too is a benefic, but can contribute to this by his connection to sugary foods and his role in creating addictions which can further lead to disease. eg chewing tobacco can cause cancer.

And the sensitive points in the chart are,

  1. The ascendant sign, the ascendant lord, these represent your physical body, the environment and the interaction between the two. A strong ascendent sign and its lord indicates the overall well being, vitality and the ability to bounce back after problems.
  2. Then the birth Moon sign, represents the emotional, astral, subconscious etc. A well placed moon is a big asset. The lens of perception he will decide how you perceive events around you.
  3. The 6th house is obviously the house of diseases thus the most  important. If its ruler is malefic, under malefic aspects, retrograde, combust, debilitated or in the sign (or even in the lunar mansion) of its enemy planets, he will give bad results.
  4. The 8th is the house of surgeries and death. Take note of the planets placed here and the ruler planet of this sign which can link to the type of disease and organ involved.
  5. The 12th is the house which indicates loss of the manifested/’wasting away’. Again the ruler planet and the planets placed here can indicate the organ and the type of disease.

Look for patterns involving these houses, signs and their lords and occupant planets. Pay special attention to retrograde planets, diseases indicated by such planets take longer periods to cure.

For Cancer there will always be Saturn and Rahu/Ketu together in some way or the other influencing/ afflicting the Moon and/or the ascendant lord/sign, in addition to other planets contributions. cancerMalefic influences in the house/sign and the body part which will be targeted, a very general list.
1st House/Aries – Brain, Head
2nd House/Taurus – Mouth
3rd House/Gemini – Throat, Neck, upper part of respiratory system.
4th House/Cancer – Chest, Breasts, lower part of respiratory system
5th House/Leo – Stomach, Blood, Bone Marrow
6th House/Virgo – Liver, Kidneys, Pancreas
7th House/Libra – Spine, back
8th House/Scorpio – organs in the lower parts of the abdomen, reproductive organs.
9th House/Sagittarius- Thighs
10th House/Capricorn – Knees
11th House/Aquarius – Calves, ankles
12th House/Pisces – Feet

The timing of the disease will be during the Vimshottari dasha main-period and/or sub-periods of the rulers and/or planets placed in the 6th, 8th and 12th houses. If death is to occur because of this cancer, then the periods of the Marak planets and/or Venus the natural marak must coincide with the disease causing periods.

Positive influences which can help recovery will be the planetary owners or planets placed in the, 3rd and 11th houses i.e. the bhavat bhavam of the 6th, 8th and 12th houses. Argala on these houses will also help health and recovery.

The physical manifested will be seen from the birth chart and the subconscious potential from the Navamsha D-9. When analysing for such a tragic disease, you should make use of the D-9 at least. Check if the ascendant lord gains power in the D-9, if the benefics and functional benefics/yogkarak gain power to give good results in the D-9.  And the planets involved in the 6th, 8th and 12th houses of the birth chart? How do they get placed in the D-9? Do they get aspected by benefics so that their potential to cause disease is reduced or do they get under more malefic aspects?

Predicting something like cancer, which is being recognised more as a lifestyle disease caused by faulty behaviour, environmental pollutants or cryptic genetic factors will be difficult as it is quite vague in its nature and style of attack. If the exact time of birth os available then you can use the specific detailed divisional chart for the answer. The same logic as above will be used in analysing the detailed divisional charts. But if you need to know and it is just one question you can use prashna kundali, it will give a precise answer.

cancerThis post was in part response to this question I received in the contact form. I recently discovered your blog and enjoy reading it. Infact i read it almost everyday …..
………. there is a cancer patient in almost every houshold irrespective of lifestyle. Can you write something on the disease of cancer and the auras surrounding the person or the astrological combinations that point to this disease as most people realise that they have cancer only during the advanced stage….)

Timing death for close relations,

Sometimes you will get clients whose parents or near relations are seriously ill and they do not have the correct birth time available. So of course you will use the prashana kundali to analyse the health and recovery of the client’s relative. But sometimes it can be serious and you may see no chance of recovery. Predicting death in clear words is never advisable unless you are very sure, as it can break down the will power of the family/patient. Or later there might be doubts in your own mind if you did the correct thing by telling them what you saw.

Here is a simple way to recheck your grim predictions. So you do not have the birth details of the patient, and the prashana kundali indicates death. But you have the exact birth time of the patient’s son/daughter/brother/spouse. Look up this relative’s chart and find out which Mahadasha/ Antardasha and current transits are on for this relative.

The rulers of the 2nd and 7th houses counted from the ascendant are called the natural marak /death-inflicting planets and determine the timing of physical death of the body. If we count this second and seventh houses from other houses, then their owners can be used to indicate timing of death of the close relations signified by these houses.deathFirst using the Vimshottari system,

Spouse – Period of the ruler of the 1st house can cause death of the spouse. The 1st house is located seventh from the 7th house which represents the spouse. Also the period of the ruler of the 8th house of the native’s chart. (8th is second from 7th)

Mother– Period of the ruler of the 5th house can indicate the death of the mother. The 5th house is counted second from the 4th house. Also the period of the ruler of the 10th house (10th house is counted seventh from the 4th house).

Father – Period of the ruler of the 4th house can cause death of the person’s father. It is seventh counted from the 10th house. The 10th is the house of the father. Also the period of the ruler of the 11th house can be used for timing death of the biological father. (Some consider the 9th house to be the house of the father, but I have found that the 9th is more apt for father-figures, teachers, Guru/second-father/spiritual-father, ancestors, patrons etc. The biological father is better seen from the 10th house).

Siblings – Period of the ruler of the 4th house can cause death of the siblings, cousins, brothers. The 4th house is the second counted from the 3rd house. And the period of the ruler of the 9th house (counted seventh from the 3rd house).

Children – Unfortunately this also happens sometimes, parents have to go through the pain of seeing a child leave the body. In this case birth time would be available so you can check for longevity from the child’s chart itself. But as a secondary confirmation, you will find that in the parent’s charts, the 6th and 11th house lords periods/sub-periods can indicate the death of a child.

Now from the transits,

Check out the transits of the biggest separative graha, Ketu and the agent of constriction Saturn. e.g. Last year, Ketu was in Capricorn, counted fourth from Libra. I observed 3 clients with Libra ascendants bidding farewell to their mothers in this period of 1.5yrs. So check if you have Saturn or Ketu transiting houses which indicate close relations as per your birth chart, e.g. 1st house = self, 3rd = siblings, 4th = mother, 5th = children, 7th = wife/husband, 10th = father. Then check the chart of that person for longevity, if he has neared his/her allotted life-span, then death of the body might occur. If not then this combination will give temporary separation, e.g. living away for studies or work etc.

While analysing, look for patterns which repeat, one single combinations does not make a reading. There will be at least 2-3 combinations which will confirm the reading.

Ketu + Saturn in Sagittarius 2019, implications

This is a continued post on the present Saturn retrograde, April 2019 to Sept 2019, in Sagittarius (140 days retrograde motion from 30th Apr to 18th Sept).

Apart from the basic analysis, the major concern is that Ketu the headlessSaturn the agent of karma are together. Ketu is fiery and separative, Saturn is airy and restrictive. Ketu is in perpetual retrograde motion so rewinds and replays the experiences of your life so that you can extract the maximum learning from it. Ketu is intense on the psychological and inner spiritual levels. And Saturn has become retrograde, thus both are travelling in the same direction from Earth’s point of reference. It is going to be quite difficult for Sagittarius and especially Purvashadha born individuals during this period. saturn ketuDuring this retrograde period, both the planets will be on exact same degree on 1st May when Saturn will be in retrograde motion in Purvashadha nakshatra. And again on 28th Sept when he will become direct again and again conjunct Ketu exactly again in Purvashadha nakshatra/lunar mansion. People with ascendant or moon sign in Gemini (7th from Sagittarius), Libra (11th from Sagittarius) and Aquarius (3rd from) should be extremely careful on these 2 days. Take no big decisions. Observe the events on these days as they can have life-time impacts on you.

If this much was not enough, there are more planetary influences in the mix.

  1. Mars will be travelling in Gemini during 7th May- 21st June 2019, he is in forward motion. (Mars is aggression, sometimes misplaced confidence and temper, a fiery combination in the present Gemini/Sagittarius axis.) He is also going to be combust for a bit (10th Jul – 14th Oct) when he passes near the Sun.
  2. Mercury will enter Gemini on 1st June, go briefly retrograde in Cancer – Gemini from 8th – 31st July 2019. (Thought processes, analytical mind and intelligence may get twisted.) He is also going to be combust for a bit (8th Jul – 2nd Aug) when he passes near the Sun.
  3. Sun is going to be with Rahu the trickster in Gemini from mid-June to mid-July. (Misplaced ego, pride and temper may cause problems.)
  4. Then Venus too is going to be with Rahu in Gemini from 30th Jun to 23rd Jul in forward motion. (Relationships and wisdom under fire.) He will then become combust for a bit (25th Jul – 10th Sept) when he passes near the Sun.
  5. And finally Jupiter is currently retrograde in Scorpio, he started his retrograde motion from Sagittarius in Apr, so till he changes his direction in Aug 2019, the events happening in the Sagittarius-Gemini axis will influence him too. (Wisdom may be lacking and selfishness may predominate your actions.)
  6. And as always, the Moon will do his 2.25 day transits over each sign, so will traverse this Gemini/Sagittarius axis twice every month.

Whenever these planets are going to be in Gemini they are going to be with Rahu and aspected by the Saturn+Ketu combination from Sagittarius (7th from Gemini). Things can get very volatile.

So buckle down and open your charts, go through what every planet means to you in your chart and especially what the Gemini/Sagittarius axis means to you. Almost everyone is going to get hit, in someway or the other, during these few months. A few tips to help you cope,

  1. No big decisions, try to continue as you had started during Apr 2019 and try to continue this till Sept 2019 till things somewhat normalise.
  2. If the currently retrograde planet is retrograde in your birth chart too, you have an opportunity to clear out your karmic balance. It might be painful in the physical context, but will help on the spiritual levels.
  3. If you are already ill in some body part, take care and your medicines on time.
  4. Try to control your mind, emotions and do not lose your temper. There will be ample provocation from the agents of the Gemini/Sagittarius axis in your chart.
  5. Do some spiritual practice everyday for 10 mins at least, anything that you are drawn to. Give yourself this time you are going to need it.

This is a very typical period where the main slow moving graha, Saturn and Jupiter are retrograde both at the same time. Then Saturn interacting with Rahu/Ketu and all the remaining planets interacting with Rahu in sequence, and they are also going retrograde themselves and combust too in sequence. Do analyse your horoscope, am sure everyone can at least try matching keywords at the very basic. At all times try to keep calm, disciplined, be patient and think twice before you act/react.

As always, this period too will pass.

saturn ketu(There was a question on the current transits thus these two posts. I hope that they help you in analysing your charts and being more prepared during this period. I have written more about the real nature of these planets in my earlier posts, which you can read by clicking the pink colored word links. I cannot do a personal detailed transit report, but I think I have written enough for you to work out things for yourself.)

Saturn turns retrograde, 2019..

Planets move around the Sun in at constant speed and in one constant forward motion. But when we see them from earth, they seem to go through various types of movements in the sky  Perspective! These movements are of eight types (as listed in the Suryasiddhant written by Mayadanav),

  1. Vikala – no movement, the planet seems to be stationary. This can be for hours or upto 5 days days depending on the planet. e.g Saturn seems to stop /stambhit, for about 5 days before he changes his apparent direction of motion while Mercury is stationary for just a few hours.
  2. Vakra – Retrograde, when the planet in the motion reverse to the usual forward motion and apparently moves backward into the zodiac. e.g. Saturn will turn retrograde on 30 April 2019 and Jupiter is retrograde now.
  3. Anuvakra – When a retrograde planet goes back into the previous sign continuing in its retrograde motion. Jupiter did this when he reversed direction and came back from Sagittarius to Scorpio in Apr 2019.
  4. Manda – forward motion but somewhat slower than usual
  5. Mandatara – forward motion and even slower than the previous Manda motion
  6. Sama – the planet has started accelerating in the forward motion
  7. Chara – is faster than the previous Sama
  8. Atichara – when a planet in forward motion enters the entering next sign really very fast, e.g. Jupiter entered Scorpio in 2018 Nov and he moved really fast and entered Sagittarius in April 2019, in just 6 months.

retrograde saturn.jpgRetrograde planets are linked to your past life lessons, those few lessons which you revise again and again. So their energies are more directed inwards towards the self rather than outwards. Rahu/Ketu are always in perpetual retrograde motion they rewind and replay the experiences of your life thus you extract the maximum learning from them. They are are very intense on the psychological and inner spiritual levels. Now to evaluate the results of any planet in retrograde motion in your birth chart, first evaluate,

  1. the basic nature of this planet, e.g his natural karakatva, Saturn is your work and gains,
  2. then which signs/ houses of the zodiac he naturally rules, Capricorn/10th house and Aquarius/11th house,
  3. then in your personal birth chart, where he is placed, the aspects that he has on others and the aspects he is under, is he retrograde, debilitated, combust or with malefics/benefics etc. This is the routine analysis which you already know by now.

Now here are a few rules for specifically analysing retrograde planets in your birth chart.

  1. If the retrograde planet is exalted in your birth chart, he will not give his results in the physical life, his energies will be completely directed inwards. This is good from the spiritual point of view as this would mean you have finally internalised your lesson.
  2. If he is retrograde and debilitated in your birth chart, he will give all his results in the physical world, he gains power and can be very helpful. Can give extraordinary power and position. But he will give nothing for the internal spiritual life.
  3. If more than one planet is retrograde in your chart the power of the planet which has advanced most in its sign will be comparatively more. eg. Saturn retrograde placed in 27deg Taurus will be more powerful than Venus retrograde placed at 5deg Cancer.
  4. If the currently retrograde planet is retrograde in your birth chart too, you need to do some spiritual activity till he turns forward again. You may face some slow downs and problems in those aspects of life which are in linked to this planet and his position in your chart in your physical life. But this will boost you spiritually. So plan on doing some meditation, pranayam or any practice which you are drawn to.
  5. The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses are the pillars on which your life rests, the Kendra houses.
    • If natural benefics owns 4th, 7th and 10th houses and are retrograde then they will not give good results in the physical life. i.e Jupiter, Venus, Mercury (Moon is never retrograde). But will give good results for the spiritual things.
    • If natural malefics own 4th, 7th and 10th houses and are retrograde, they will give good results for the physical life, but not for the spiritual life.
  6. The 1st, 5th and 9th houses are the Dharma trikon which represent the help you get from others, this ensures you achieve your life objectives easily. Any planet which owns these houses and retrograde can give very good results in the physical life. (If he owns the 6th, 8th and 12th houses too at the same time, his results will be a bit lowered).
  7. One important point is that in case the retrograde is a Anuvakra. The planet crosses back into the previous sign during the retrograde motion. e.g the present Jupiter has started retrograding from Sagittarius in April 2019 and has crossed back into the previous sign Scorpio now. So for babies born now, Jupiter will give a mix of results Scorpio+Sagittarius.

saturn retrogradeAstronomically Saturn reverses his direction whenever Sun enters the 5th or 9th house counted from his sign (Sun is in Aries in April 2019) and turns direct again when Sun enters the other 5th or 9th sign (Sun is in Leo during September 2019).

Very briefly on Saturn’s present retrograde. He is aspecting Gemini (7th from), Libra (11th from) and Aquarius (3rd from) as he is placed in Sagittarius. Right now he is with Ketu and aspected by Rahu, briefly Mars will aspect him in May-Jun. So if you are born with the ascendant or the Moon in these four signs will need to take special care. Also check out what these 4 signs represent in your chart, you will get some trouble from these parts of your life. Libra will be the least affected followed by Aquarius, Gemini and then Sagittarius which is going to bear the brunt of this retrograde.

This Saturn will make everyone go slow and think before taking decisions related to career, professional things, investments, like-minded groups, speculations, stock markets etc. Do not take big decisions related to legal issues, relations, financial matters, you might need to review them after Saturn turns forward again. If you are ill in some body part connected with Saturn (bones, teeth, ligaments, nails, hair etc) take special care. If you also have a retrograde Saturn in your birth chart, then expect issues with money flow and work. Try to behave in an honest, legal and professional manner, be disciplined, self-restrained and efficient as possible as taking on Saturn’s qualities will be good during this period.

Yogkarak planets, functional benefics

Yogkarak planets are an important concept in reading a chart. These are functional benefics for the chart and are determined as follows. In your chart, the basic birth chart with the ascendant as the 1st house, check out the following planets,

  1. The lords of houses 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th (these are called the Kendra houses)
  2. The lords of the houses 5th, 9th (these are called the Kona houses, together with the 1st they make up the Dharma trikon)

If you have a planet which simultaneously owns a house in both of these categories then it is a Yogkarak, a powerful functional benefic for the chart and your life.

Here is the list of Yogkarak planets for the ascendants,

  1. Aries ascendant – None of the planets fulfil this condition
  2. Taurus ascendant – Saturn is the lord of the 9th house (sign is Capricorn) and the lord of the 10th house (sign is Aquarius).
  3. Gemini ascendant – None of the planets fulfil this condition
  4. Cancer ascendant – Mars as he owns one Kona house i.e. 5th house (sign is Scorpio ) and one Kendra, the 10th house (sign is Aries).
  5. Leo ascendant – Mars, as the lord of the 4th house, Kendra (sign here is Scorpio) and also owns a Kona, i.e. is the lord of the 9th house (sign here is Aries).
  6. Virgo ascendant– None of the planets fulfil this condition
  7. Libra ascendantSaturn, he is the lord of one Kendra, lord of 4th house (sign is Capricorn) and also owns the 5th house (sign here is Aquarius).
  8. Scorpio ascendant – None of the planets fulfil this condition
  9. Sagittarius ascendant – None of the planets fulfil this condition
  10. Capricorn ascendant – Venus as the lord of the 5th house (sign here is Taurus) and the lord of the 10th house (sign here is Libra)
  11. Aquarius ascendant – Venus as the lord of the 4th house (sign here is Taurus ) and also is the lord of the 9th house (sign here is Libra)
  12. Pisces ascendant – None of the planets fulfil this condition

It may seem a bit strange that the so-called malefic planets, Mars and Saturn are Yogkaraks but Jupiter considered to be the biggest benefic is not a Yogkarak for any ascendant.birthday bow box cardYogkarak for Venus ruled ascendants is Saturn and vice versa. Makes sense in a way, as Venus and Saturn are best buddies. Venus and Saturn may sound a bit funny, something like a happy handsome outgoing man being best friends with an aged sour, workholic discipline freak older man. But look into their natures closely. They match. Both love discipline, Venus too does not like if you break the rules, his rules are moral, of fairness and balance. He is the toughest teacher, teaches us the value of relationships. Both are deeply connected with death. Saturn rules the endurance of your frame and Venus will decide when you have filled your treasuries and thus its time to leave.

So what does this Yogkarak do? In a chart, if the owners of the Kendra and Kona houses are together in a single house they get the capacity to give extraordinary results. The Yogkarak in the specific ascendant’s chart has double the power, as he owns both types of houses, a Kendra and Kona. Thus wherever he may be placed he will always give excellent results. If the Yogkarak planet of a chart is placed well, exalted, with other benefics or in his own sign or has his power enhanced in any way (e.g. in the further divisional charts), it is even better. They can change the entire outlook of the chart.

Saturn is Yogkarak for Libra and Taurus, works well everywhere. If he is placed in a Kendra or Kona, he will give exceptional results for the entire personality. Even in the dushamsthan 6th, 8th and 12th, he will bring out the best possible he can.

  • For Taurus ascendant, if Yogkarak Saturn in the 12th house, sign Aries, he can cause a few problems as he will be debilitated.
  • For Libra ascendant, he will be debilitated in 7th house (sign Aries) which can delay marriage but Saturn’s direct aspect over the ascendant itself can give very good results.

Mars is the Yogkarak for Cancer and Leo ascendant, ruled by the luminaries the Moon and the Sun. Thus the dreaded Manglik tag need not be quite applied to charts having these ascendant signs. Such a Mars can give quite good results overall because of his position as a Yogkarak.

  • For Cancer ascendant, Mars the yogkarak gives very good results in all houses, wherever he may be. If he is in the ascendant Cancer itself, he will be debilitated but still can give good results for the personality. However will cause problems in marriage because of his direct aspect on the 7th house. Such a person will always be aggressive with his loved one.
  • For Leo ascendant, Yogkarak Mars gives good results in all the houses he is placed in, except the 12th house (sign Cancer) where he is debilitated.
  • For both these ascendants, Mars in the 8th can cause some issues, but if such a person follows some deep meditation, Dhyan, pranayam etc where he actively works on his breathing, it will be of use.

Venus is the Yogkarak for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants. He will perform quite well in all houses, even in his sign of debilitation Virgo.

  • For Capricorn ascendant, Venus debilitated will be in the 9th house. So will be very supportive in life, securing its very foundations.
  • For the Aquarius ascendant, Venus will be debilitated in the 8th house occupied by Virgo. So will support by providing good natured, wealthy in-laws family and also will grant inheritance and legacies and bequeaths.

So if you ever get a chart with the ascendant signs, Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius look out for the Yogkarak planets and what they are offering. Their gifts can be so powerful that they can change the entire outlook of the horoscope.

Saturn’s energies and you

Am sure you would wonder why would anyone want to increase the energies of Saturn in their life. Well, we are not increasing/decreasing anything, we are just trying to balance it and make effective use of it.

Wherever Saturn is placed, he puts restrictions and constrictions on the keywords of that house. If badly placed, then he can cause quite a lot of problems, from physical aging, to problems in social identity, profession, money flow, problems in the residence, nameless fears, no comforts, pessimistic attitude, emotional restrictions, no rest, no sleep etc.  He is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries (the exact opposite for his father the Sun). However after he matures at the age of 36yrs, his actions become more understandable. Sun, Moon  and Mars are his enemies, MercuryVenus, Rahu are friends with him and Jupiter and Ketu are sort of neutral to him. He is a natural malefic and has the ability to strike fear.

  • Saturn can perform generally well in houses 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th, but this is a very generic statement. You will need to check what aspects he is under and what houses he owns too. E.g. Saturn in the 8th house will give a long life, i.e. he restricts death, but if there are other influences he might make it difficult to leave the aged body! More malefics influence him, more problems will he cause.
  • Saturn in the 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th houses generally gives troubling results unless balanced out by some benefic influences. (One exception here is Libra ascendant, if Saturn is in Libra, as yogkarak and exalted, he can even grant Moksh if other planets support.)
  • If you have Saturn aspecting/conjoint the Sun or the Moon take special care of your eyes.

The Saturn beej mantra is, ‘Om praang preeng prowng sah Shanischarya namah’, which can be recited once, thrice or 108 times on Saturdays. saturn 2.jpgThere are a few things that you can do to regulate and balance Saturn’s energies.

  1. You can add the colors, smells/fragrances and food tastes linked to Saturn in your life. Don’t overwhelm yourself, just a touch here and there.
  2. Take care of your teeth, brush with astringent toothpastes.
  3. Also take care of your bones, take your calcium and eat a healthy diet.
  4. If you drink milk, do not drink buffalo milk, stick to cow milk.
  5. Try to get an oil based massage once in a while. If it is not possible do a self-massage, apply your favourite massage oil to your feet, hands and head etc wherever you can easily and then shower.
  6. Avoid non vegetarian food and alcohol. It may be impossible but then if you can try to limit yourself to just fish for the protein and limit alcohol intake for only at social events.
  7. Feed ravens once in a while, give them chapati or bread something made of grains. (If ravens are not available near where you live then next option is crows)
  8. Do not lie and do not cheat. Such an important lesson, our teachers taught us when we were children. Also avoid taking up professions where you are required to lie all the time! e.g. lawyers? (If you are already a lawyer, help a genuine poor, blind or aged client free of charge once in a while).

And the kindest things that you can do are these acts of charity. These will help your own soul as well as bring real happiness to those who are forgotten by society. Do this with a genuine intention of being of service with love and respect.

  1. Call up your aged parents or grandparents once a week, or run some errands for them if you get the time.
  2. If you can afford it, maybe once a year, give a treat, sweets or fruits to an old age home. If it is not possible then take your own aged parents or grandparents for a special treat once in a while. Be compassionate.
  3. Specifically try to help out blind people or aged people. It can be as simple as helping them on the street or giving up your seat in the bus.

Saturn is the energy of Karma, you have to pay-back and rebalance, there is no option sometimes. So some pain will be involved. Interpreting Saturn’s role in your horoscope is very typical. You do not like the lessons that he teaches, he can be quite harsh. So try to bring into yourself the qualities of responsibility, silence, self-discipline, detachment and objectivity, in short ‘grow up’. Know that you have to give back, if you can give it back gracefully, karma will be more easily satisfied.

Marak/Marakesh is an important concept in Jyotish. Marak is the planet/s which decides the timing of exit from the physical body, death. The situation of death is defined by the 8th house and the conditions active at the moment of death are seen from the power of the Moksh trikon, but timing is from the Marak. The planetary lord of the 2nd house and the 7th house of the ascendant is the Marak planet for the chart.

The 8th house and the bhavat bhavam of the 8th i.e. the 3rd house are called the Ayush sthana, houses of longevity. The twelfth house counted from these two houses are thus the 7th and the 2nd houses, these are the Marak/death determining houses.

Then there are natural marak planets i.e. Saturn, Mars and Rahu. These three can on their own cause physical death without much assistance from other planets but its quite rare. They need to be connected in some way to the 2nd or 7th houses or their lords. Physical death is an extremely significant phenomenon, it is not determined by a single placement but by a synergy of the entire chart’s energies as a whole. The Mahadasha or antardasha ruled by the Marak, or a particularly important transit of the Marak planets can serve as the final break point.optix2.jpgSo why the rulers of 2nd and 7th houses? These are auspicious houses, so why should they be used to judge the time of death. Death is not considered auspicious, or is it?

House 2 – You all know quite a bit of astrological stuff by now, so what all does the 2nd house stand for? Think a bit and read on.

  • 2nd house is the storehouse. You, in your life gain experiences of several sorts. Also you accumulate several types of stuff. These are your assets, the treasures of your personality and your environment (defined by the 1st house). These are ‘collected’ in the 2nd house. You finish collecting all that you have decided on, your treasuries are full. Now what? You leave! The body cannot take in anything anymore, you have completed your targets. Saturation.
  • Now the natural ruler of the 2nd is Venus. He is also rules relationships at every level.  Relationship with the act of death naturally ruled by Mars of Scorpio 8th house. The 2nd house here is one-half of the yoke, the other being the 8th house (it is counted seventh from 2nd). When you finish accumulating your assets in the 2nd house, the 8th house will trigger the fast terrifying transformations of your assets, take these stores and use them in a balanced manner, converting your physical identity to that of the astral. Emptying them and making them ready for the next rebirth.

House 7 – After reading this about the 2nd house, I am sure you can work out why 7th house ruler can also indicate the time to exit the physical body.

  • The 7th house rules bargains, partnerships, balance and equatable sharing. Throughout your life you are actively involved in several kinds of partnerships. Every relationship can be viewed through the lens of a ‘partnership’, where both partners gain fairly. So what happens when you reach your goals on partnerships and gains from them?
  • We take birth to re-balance karma, no other reason. ‘Balance’ is the reason for this life in this body. We decide on how much of this karma-balance-target at the moment of birth. This moment of birth is the 1st house, and the 7th is the other part of the yoke.
  • Once you achieve the goals, it is time to set new targets, i.e. leave the old physical body and take on a new one.
  • The stuff you have in the 2nd house also represents the secret gains from the 7th house (it is the eighth when counted from the 7th house). It represents how you have used the energy of the 7th to change the status of your karmic-balance.
  • The natural ruler here is also Venus, as he rules the 7th house of the zodiac, Libra.
  • Venus is the mokshkarak, when yoked to the vitality of Mars he can even grant you Moksh if the time is right. When all your karma is balanced by the assets you have gained in your this incarnation. This is one of the reasons Moksh is considered to be the primary function of Venus and not any other planet.

wallup.netIf in the horoscope the Moon sign is more powerful than the Ascendant then check out the 2nd and 7th house lords counted from this Moon sign, they can also act as Maraks.

Then there are those periods in life where life becomes unbearable. There are catastrophic changes and traumas which makes one want to end it all. But these are not periods where death will occur. These hard times are related to the following planets, their Vimshottari Mahadasha /antardasha or significant transits. The power of the planet to give positive or negative results should always be examined before arriving at a conclusion. And then as always look for patterns not single placements.

  • Lord of the 12th house counted from the Moon or Ascendant or Saturn – Loss of emotional support and comfort, extreme loneliness and grief. Separation from love and loved ones. A deep desire to move into the astral dimensions permanently.  This causes a desire to leave the physical body frame. The spirit wants to dissolve and separate.
  • Lord of the 8th house counted from the Moon or Ascendant or Saturn – Again this planet cannot confer physical death but traumatic catastrophic changes which are quite death-like. Transformations of personality in every way, positive and negative. Sudden wealth, legacies, accidents, surgery, magic, tantric stuff, divorce etc, but never actual physical death.

The length of a life is not important the intensity is. Mars rules intensity and Saturn rules endurance. Mars is always willing to change, transform and he has the capacity to generate enough resources to facilitate his fast and furious movements. Saturn is slow, he moves slowly generating his resources and the processes which he rules over linger on. Mars, the ruler of life and death is also the natural partner of Venus, the ‘natural’ ruler of 2nd and 7th, the ‘natural’ marakesh. And Venus is Saturn’s best friend too.

If the chart shows the influence of Mars over this process of physical death, it will be very fast. If Saturn has links to physical death then it will be slow and often via a lingering illness. If you have Mars and Saturn both involved with your 8th house then be prepared for the long haul, a long life has been granted to you. If benefics aspect they will give a graceful and dignified transition.

Sometimes you get a case where the person is enduring a prolonged illness. You look at the chart and see that though the Marak’s periods are on, the life span allotted to the chart is not yet complete. Such a typical time frame gives ‘sickness’, this sickness may manifest as extreme sadness (astral body suffers) or actual sickness (physical body suffers). The pran-link between the jivatma/soul and the body/robot is thinned down. The soul has not yet decided to leave. In such a case, prayers and healing (on spiritual, physical, emotional and mental levels) can convince the soul to stay on and continue in happiness.

Back to Venus, the morning star! Venus always fascinates me. He is Maya, cannot be determined if he is real or an illusion. He is beautiful, balanced, he knows the value of stuff, he grants the deepest knowledge, he decides the time when your body has exhausted itself. He tells you it is time to get a new life! He tests you, he does not grant his wisdom so easily. He defines relationships, the most important one being your relationship with your own self. He is perfection!

A philosopher might say that the family/ 2nd house and the spouse/ 7th house are the things one most loves and these are the ones which destroy him in the end!
