Kantak Shani, Saturn in transit

I have written a post on the transit of Saturn over the 12 houses in a previous post, but there was a question on ‘Kantak Shani’, the Saturn who puts thorns in your life. When Saturn is transiting 4th, 7th, 8th or 10th from your birth Moon sign he is called a Kantak Shani. At present Saturn is in Capricorn, so if your birth Moon sign is Libra, Cancer, Gemini or Aries, Saturn is a thorny proposition for you. He and his agents can take away the peace of your mind, cause restlessness and emotional pain

Saturn is fear personified. You have done something in the past and you are going to have to rebalance it now. But you do not remember what it was and you do not know what you have to do to balance it. This ‘ignorance’ is the fear that Saturn represents. Saturn’s transits through your horoscope takes out one aspect of your life with unvarying regularity. He goes through your chart like a wrecking ball, completing one cycle in 30yrs. Saturn in every placement in transit causes stress to the house he occupies. When counted from the ascendant, it is the physical events which cause stress. And when counted from the Moon sign, stress on the emotional/psychic/astral levels is indicated. You can call it Kantak Shani or Dhahiyya or Sade-Sati but Shani will act as a wrecking ball, cause disillusionment and thus help you work off your karma.

Saturn’s transit in 4th house from the birth Moon –

When Saturn transits the 4th from the birth Moon, he aspects the birth Moon itself, the 6th and 10th houses from the birth Moon. So he may cause a change in residence, maybe linked to a job transfer? But this change will not be smooth, it will cause hassles. In any case issues related to the house will occur, maybe major repairs, loan repayments something which causes you stress. Mother’s health may suffer, she may die if her horoscope indicates. Overall family will not be happy. There may be medical issues with your heart and circulatory system, if it is indicated in your birth chart. The profession will also give stress, restrictions, obstacles and mental overload. And Saturn’s aspect on the birth Moon causes mental fear, dejection, disappointment and loneliness. Even if the physical things are ok in life these results will be seen on the emotional/psychological levels.

Kantak Shani, Saturn in transit

Saturn’s transit in 7th house from the birth Moon –

When Saturn transits the 7th house counted from the birth Moon he aspects the birth Moon and the 4th and 9th houses counted from the birth Moon. The spouse suffers, either it is fully an emotional suffering or a minor medical issue which causes disproportionate mental suffering to both of you. The 9th house is restricted so luck, divine blessings, support from society/elders is reduced. You will feel no connection with your life’s foundations, either physical or spiritual. Work and business can suffer. The family life is disturbed again as above, you may have to travel a lot, stay away from home for long periods of time, home comforts and peace of mind is denied.

Saturn’s transit in 8th house from the birth Moon –

When Saturn transits the 8th house from the Moon, he will aspect 2nd 5th and 10th house from the birth Moon sign. Long term medical issues may be trigged, the recovery will be long drawn, accidents are possible, if the time of death has arrived as per the birth horoscope then this too can happen. Relations in the birth family will be affected and there may be demands on your time/resources by your close relatives. You will face problems because of them. Children during this time will be a source of worry and you may also be separated from them. The reason may be good in a way, eg they might go to study in a hostel for an expensive higher education. The birth father may be ill or might die if his horoscope indicates this. Profession will give mental stress, workload might increase or salary might decrease.

Saturn’s transit in 10th house from the birth Moon

When Saturn transits the tenth house from the Moon sign, he also aspects the 4th 7th 12th houses counted from the Moon. So again the 4th house things as above will be a source of emotional stress. The 7th house, spouse, business partnerships, income, legal issues, litigations, contacts and one-one relationships will be a cause of tension. You will not be happy with these aspects of your life. The profession, salary, office-work and boss will give you stress. You might face emotional disappointments in practically every area of life.

When you see things from the birth Moon sign remember that it is an emotional hit. The actual physical event may be auspicious/unfavourable as per the strength of the ascendant lord, that house/sign’s lord and other aspects on it. But because this is Saturn operating from the birth Moon he will not allow happiness from this event, instead he will grant fear, dejection, restriction and pain on the emotional levels.

If the birth Moon is powerful enough then this effect will be less intense. In addition if there are other favourable transits operating eg Jupiter in transit at that same time is putting his favourable aspect on the birth Moon or the houses in question then the negative  effects will be felt less intensely. But if during this Saturn’s transit there are additional influences of malefics, Mars, Sun, Rahu/Ketu then the negative effects will be worse, in this case the client should take more care of himself.

Ashtakvarga for confirming predictions

The Ashtakvarga chart is of very great importance in Jyotish. And one should make full use of this tool. Checking the effects during transits and strengths of the graha in that sign is just one way of doing this. Here, I am listing out a few more ways you can use this table in making predictions. Ashtakvarga is very simple method, all you need to know is how to read the rows and the columns.

Residence in foreign lands can be easily seen using Ashtakvarga.

‘Foreign’ in astrological terms is a rather loosely defined concept. Foreign residence can mean different things to different people. A person from Chennai shifting to Sri Lanka just a few km across the sea is living in a foreign land. Someone from Maharashtra goes to live in Manipur. Or someone from India goes to USA. All these are examples of foreign residence. Foreign can mean a different town, different state or even a different nation. It basically means a place which is different from your home, in terms of distance or culture or both. The person feels it to be ‘foreign’. Several people want to translocate to foreign locations for better opportunities in life. The horoscope will support if the following houses have potential,

  • 7th house – travelling to to foreign lands
  • 9th house – long journeys
  • 12th house – journeys abroad which result in permanent residence (Rahu in the 12th house is a sure-shot prediction about having to leave the home town)

Calculate the Ashtakvarga or use the software. Then

  • check the total scores of the signs placed in each of the three houses above.
  • If there are any planets placed in these houses check their individual score for that specific sign and also their total score in the last column.
  • All these scores will be the least possible as leaving the home and going to away from it is considered to be an inauspicious effect.

eg. Here is just the Ashtakvarga chart. (I am not giving the rest of the birth details as the person is alive and I do not like using living people as general study subjects, but I wanted to use just this chart.)

The signs in this person’s 7th, 9th and 12th houses are Aries = 22 points, Gemini = 35 points and Virgo = 23 points. Saturn is in Virgo in the 12th house, he has 1 point in Virgo. These are all very low scores so the relocation to the ‘foreign’ locations is quite evident. (Except Gemini in the 9th house has the highest score in the table = 35. The reason was because the client had a very strong past life connect with these foreign places, he was bound by the 9th house to go and complete his Dharma there.)

Confirming longevity

You can confirm the longevity and the quality of life using the Ashtakvarga scores. The following should have good scores,

  • the ascendant sign’s total, this is crucial.
  • the planetary lord of the ascendant sign wherever he is placed should have a good score in the sign he is placed in. The total score of this planet should be high. This too is crucial.
  • any planets placed in the ascendant sign should have good scores in the sign. And the total score of that planet also should be good. This will play a supportive role.

Verify this logic with your client’s charts, it will always be correct.

  • The average total for a sign is 28 points, if there are more points obviously the sign and its house is going to give good results. If there are less than 25 points, it is a cause for concern. Less than 20 and the sign is practically annihilated.
  • The average for a planet in a sign is 4 points. If he gets more points, he will naturally give more auspicious results. If his points are 1 or 2 he is unable to do so.
  • In our example above, the client’s Asc-Libra has 27 points, less than average but not too bad. Venus has 3 points in the sign he is placed in, its less than average. We can expect him to have a reasonably long life but there will be physical issues cropping up from time to time.

Predicting sudden rise and falls in life is easy using the Ashtakvarga charts.

In our example, we can see that Capricorn = 32 points, Aquarius = 18 points and Pisces = 30 points. So when a planet transits from Capricorn to Aquarius whatever he signifies will go suddenly downhill, the client should be careful during this time. And when the planet again transits from Aquarius to Pisces there will be a sudden rise in that planet’s stuff. This prediction can easily be tallied using the Moon’s transits, he transits the zodiac in one month. (eg in one such transit the client managed to quarrel with his wife so seriously that it led to a temporary separation, there were other factors of course, but this Moon’s transit was the precipitating factor.) The falls especially can be dangerous and the client should be prepared and careful. This sudden rise or fall is even more dramatic if the totals are the exact 18 and 36 points, the minimum and the maximum possible scores.

If you get clients who have fallen ill suddenly or in serious accidents or sudden loss of wealth, sudden crash in relationships etc check out their Ashtakvarga table for confirmation and further predictions.

The dread of the Sadi-Sati

The transit of Saturn through the signs placed 12th, 1st and 2nd from the birth Moon sign are called the ‘Seven and Half’ years of torture, the ‘Sade-sati’. To check out how severe the Sade-sati is going to be for you, open your Ashtakvarga table and note the sign occupied by the birth Moon, the sign before and after it. (Remember the Ashtakvarga is about signs not houses, do not confuse yourself while noting down the points.) Now check out the following

  • The total points of each of these three signs. If these scores are less than 25 it is bad and its even lesser you are going to have a dreadful time. But if these scores are more than 30 points, your Sade-Sati will actually give you pleasing results!
  • Now see the individual score that Saturn has in these signs. if its less than 2 consider it to be a testing time, but if it is more than 6 it can give gains. The scores 3 to 5 are considered to be somewhat average.

Saturn can cause significant physical and mental stress even when he is not doing his Sade-sati. In our example above,

  • Saturn (though the Yogkarak) damaged the client’s body and caused severe stress in his profession when he transited Virgo (Saturn+Virgo = 1, Virgo= 23).
  • Before that when he transited Aries (Saturn+Aries = 1, Aries= 22) he caused disappointments in his education.
  • Now the prediction for Saturn’s effect on the client’s life. Saturn will transit Capricorn soon from Jan 2020. (Saturn+Capricorn = 7, Capricorn= 32). The client will see a sudden rise in his profession and gains (we just saw how to predict sudden rise in life). Then next Jan 2022, Saturn will transit Aquarius (Saturn+Aquarius = 2, Aquarius= 18) this client will go through a sudden fall in luck and will have to face stress in life unless he is strongly prepared to deal with with what will come. Saturn’s next transit through Pisces will offer only generic relief because though Pisces=30 a good score, Saturn+Pisces = 1 is an abysmally low score.

So as you can see, the Ashtakvarga table is a very useful item. You can use the total values of the planets and signs and also the individual values of the planets in the different signs to gain a clear idea of what kind of results they are going to be giving in life. So whenever you predict using the birth chart, do glance over the Ashtakvarga tables, this will be an additional confirmation step which will improve the accuracy of your predictions.

Saturn, the wrecking ball

Shani is the dreaded God of Karma He rules your luck and income. He is the son of Surya the Sun. Sun also represents our Ego. Surya has two sons, one is Shani who delivers karma while we reside in the mortal world, Martyaloka and the other is Yama who delivers karma when we reside in his domains as spirits after the body death. Both terrify because they represent our own Actions which have now come to fruition. We sowed and these two ensure that we reap.

Shani in the horoscope is the one who restricts, constricts, slows and resists. But he also ensures that you work off your debts in a strict orderly disciplined manner. He brings about the maturity earned with hard earned experience. Check out the house Saturn occupies in your birth horoscope. It is the matters of this house which will give you the most soul-changing experience and Shani will administer them.

We know of the dreaded Sade-sati when the transit Saturn moves in the sign 12th to your birth moon sign, the actual moon sign and the sign 2nd from the moon sign. This is a period of 7.5 years where you are tested on an emotional level. Your comfort zones are destroyed and their stark reality is brought out. This event happens every 22.5yrs. But with this sade-sati taking so much attention, we forget that transit Shani in each of the 12 houses can bring about catastrophic changes.

Here will describe the effects of the transit Saturn in each of the 12 houses of the chart beginning from the ascendent. These changes will occur over a period of avg 2.5 yrs, the time Saturn takes to traverse the rashi. The overlying theme of these 2.5 years will be as given below. The effects will be modified by the aspects and transits of the other planets and the strength of the original birth horoscope. Shani takes off our rose-tinted glasses and makes us see the start harsh reality for what it is. eg, if your brother really does not like you but just pretends to, the reality will come out when Saturn traverses your 3rd house. Also Saturn’s periods seem more endurable after 36yrs of age and after 60yrs they become more understandable.

Saturn, the wrecking ball

Shani is Structure, Time and Reality.

Transit Saturn in ascendent will directly affect the physical body, you may age suddenly. You may fall ill more often as your vitality is compromised. You may feel tired with painful joints and muscles. Be very alert regarding any physical symptoms and consult your doctors immediately. In addition, your and your parents social standing and luck will be affected. In short, you will look and feel and get older.

Transit Saturn in the 2nd house will impact the family heritage and assets. Some worrying realities regarding the family and group may come to light. Tangible family resources will shrink. Your personal health and health of family members will cause problems for you.

Transit Saturn in the 3rd house will put a spanner in your communications and teamwork. You might get into disputes with your neighbours, cousins and brothers. Feelings and actions against you which were hidden will come to the surface.

Transit Saturn in the 4th house home will uproot the foundations of your life. Health of your mother will be affected. The house you live in, your vehicles and landed properties will be in litigations. You may even lose these objects of emotional security and even death of the mother may occur.

Transit Saturn in the 5th house will impact your creative processes, most importantly your children. Keep an eye on your children least you get unpleasant shocks from them. If studying, your education will suffer. Also never gamble or speculate during this period.

Transit Saturn in the 6th house is relatively a better position as Saturn will help you maintain your problems at their current levels. Your problems of debt, disease and enemies will not worsen. Now is a good time to undergo deep healing and resolution of long suffered illnesses or debts. Your enemies also wont be able to cause you harm.

Transit Saturn in the 7th house, all your partnerships will suddenly develop issues. All activities which require fair play, negotiation, balance will fail. You will develop problems in business partnerships, marriage, contracts and legal situations. Patience and perseverance is the key. Do not make it worse by ill considered rash acts or immature behaviour.

Transit Saturn in the 8th house is again a better position as it extends your life. Shani will put a stop to those sudden changes which may potentially cause, accidents, medical operations or death. Bad luck is put on hold as situations do not get worse. This is again a time to work on whats really bothering you and using the energies of saturn to get it set up again.

Transit Saturn in the 9th house will make you revaluate your ideology and belief structures. Your outward expresssions of faith, like going to the church, performing pujas etc will be compromised. Your dead ancestors will demand some tarpans and energies. There will be issues with father figures and paternal male relatives.

Transit Saturn in the 10th house will cause a rift between you and your father. Health of the father will be affected and he may even die. Professionally you will be in a hard place, with more demands being made on your time and volume of work. You are required to organise your work patterns now in these 2.5yrs.

Transit Saturn in the 11th house makes you luckless. Do not gamble or speculate during this period. Your sources of income will be restricted. Your friends, networks and communities will also shun you. Keep a low profile during this period.

Transit Saturn in the 12th house will ruin your spiritual peace. You will be forced to completely understand what you have before you are given access to more spiritual tools. You will not get time to rest, sleep and pray. You will deeply disturbed at the subconscious levels which can create deep seated traumas. Be very careful as these subconscious traumas will spill over and be visible in your physical body when the Saturn moves on again to your ascendent.

These above are the physical realities of Saturn transits. How it will affect you on the emotional and comfort level is to be seen from the position of the transit Saturn from the birth moon sign. For the more subtler influences also count the current transiting rashi from your Birth Saturn rashi. This will give you the complete picture.

Saturn the wrecking ball, takes out every aspect of your life systematically in his transit cycle of 30years. And then does it again. Most of us experience 2 full cycles till the age of 60yrs.

Saturn, the son of the Ego, brings harsh realities to the surface and if you are pragmatic enough to understand it is actually a good thing.
