Svarbhanu aka Rahu Ketu and Ksheer Samudra Manthan

Of all the 580+ posts I have written till now, the most read are the ones on Rahu Ketu. And with good reason. These two are the most fascinating forces in the horoscope. If you can understand them, you understand Life, Living and the Beyond. If you analyse the horoscopes of charismatic individuals, Rahu Ketu will always be very strong. From business tycoons to genuine Gurus, they become this by the combined power of Rahu Ketu ie Svarbhanu.

Rahu Ketu are the two parts of the Asur Svarbhanu. The head is Rahu and the headless body is Ketu. These two were created during the Samudra manthan, ie churning of the infinite Ocean of Eternal Happiness or the Ocean of Mahapran during the time of the Koorma avtar, ie the incarnation of Shri Vishnu as Koorma.

There are no ’stories’ in Santa dharma/ Hinduism. These are all allegories, deep philosophy in easy to understand events which may also have actually occurred at some point of time. All our deepest philosophy is intertwined in various stories so that everyone, from children to the philosophers can read the same text but learn different things from it, palimpsests.

Samudra Manthan is a very important allegory in Sanatan Dharm/ Hinduism as it describes what happens in you when you do Dhyan. Your journey from apparent Duality to the Non Dual Reality.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

Briefly Samudra manthan goes like this. (Ref Ithihas, Mahabharat, Adi Parva)

Shri Vishnu gives his Vaijayanti mala to Rishi Durvas to deliver it to Dev raj Indra. He goes to Amravati, the capital of the Devatas and gives it to Indra. Indra holds it casually and the Mala falls from his hands. His elephant Airavat stamps on it. Rishi Durvas gets angry at this insult to the Mala and curses Indra that all ‘prosperity’ from his universe will vanish. Accordingly all types of prosperity, all wealth, all comforts, all gold, food, animals etc, Moon, Airavat himself and all symbols of Shri including the Devi Shri Laxmi herself, unmanifest ie dissolve back into the Ksheer Samudra. There is horrific turbulence, inauspiciousness everywhere.

Indra rushes to Shri Vishnu, asks for help. The solution is to churn the Ksheer Samudra with the help of his half-brother, Asur Raj Mahabali. The Devatas/Surs and the Danavs/Daityas/Asuras are to cooperate for this task. Thus the Ocean would give up its treasures and Shri ie prosperity would return to the manifested universe. Mandar mountain would be the churning rod and Vasuki Nag the churning rope.

On the chosen day Anant Nag uproots the Mandar mountain, sets it in the Ksheer Samudra. Vasuki Nag is tied 3 and 1/2 times around the mountain. 54 Devata hold on the tail part of Vasuki Nag and / 54 Asur hold his head portion. They start churning the Samudra. There is terrible turbulence, lightning, storms, Vasuki Nag breathes out fire as he is pulled, stretched and in pain, the beings existing on the mountain and in the ocean are destroyed, their essences merge into the ocean. Then the mountain also starts sinking into the Samudra. Shri Vishnu manifests his Koorma avtar and stabilises the mountain so that the churning can continue.

Finally the churning starts yielding results, embodiments of prosperity start manifesting from the ocean. Kamdhenu (given to the Rishis), Ucchaishrava (given to Asur Raj Bali), Airavat (given to Dev Raj Indra), Parijat (planted in Swarg), Varuni (given to Asurs), Moon (fixed in the skies), Apsara (went to Swarg), Panchajanya, Kaustubh Mani (both to Shri Vishnu), Sharanga (bow, weapon of Shri Vishnu), Mahalaxmi appeared with the Vyjanti mala (She is Shri Vishnu’s wife).

The churning continues, a poison Halahal or Kalkut manifests, it has the power to destroy everything so Bhagwan Shankar drinks it all and Devi Parvati with her power holds it at his throat. (Thus Bhagwan Shankar is pure white just like white quartz, Sphatik, but with a blue throat, Neelkanth.)

Finally Bhagwan Dhanvantari (deity of Ayurved) appears with the Amrut kalash in his hands. Thus fourteen ‘gems’ of prosperity manifest from the Ksheer Samudra.

Seeing the pot of Amrut, the Dev and Asur start fighting on who should drink it. Shri Vishnu uses his Maya and appears as a beautiful Mohini before them. He offers to distribute it fairly and they agree. Devatas stand on one side of Mohini and the Daitya-s at the another. Mohini starts with the Devatas first with the understanding that the Asurs would be served after them. Asur Svarbhanu goes and stands between the Sun and Moon so gets the the Amrut out of turn. Sun/Surya and Moon/Chandra object to this. Shri Vishnu gets angry with Svarbhanu’s behaviour and cuts off his head with his weapon the Sudarshan chakra. But Svarbhanu has already drunk the Amrut, he has gone beyond death. So his head continues to exist as Rahu and the headless body as Ketu. After this episode, Shri Vishnu further punishes the Asurs by not giving them their share of the Amrut.

Rahu and Ketu become specific enemies of the Surya and Chandra. They ‘devour’ the Sun and Moon from time to time, causing eclipses.

All these words are in Sanskrit, ie the Devbhasha Samskrutam so have various meanings. Let’s try to understand the cast of characters in Sanskrit.

  • Ksheer Samudra – This is the ocean of intelligent milky sparkly pran that surrounds us. We are all sealed inside this. The power of the configuration of the horoscope that you have tied yourself with. The conscious power of the sound, vibrations etc.
  • Manthan – shaking, churning, creating fire by friction, energy created by movement of inward/ Purak and outward/ Rechak breath when you do your Dhyan.
  • Vaijayanti – a kinetic force created by terrifying acceleration and speed
  • Mala – line, streak, garland, crown etc.
  • Durvas – something that is difficult to be tolerated or stayed with
  • Rishi – ray of light, ascetic, seer
  • Indra – individual soul, king of the devata, post here
  • Mandar – connected to slowness, largeness,  firmness, meter of prosody, tree, mirror, heaven etc. Mandar mountain is considered to be a splintered part of the Meru itself.
  • Vasuki – the energy which converts the energies of the Vasu into solidity, ie the power which dulls or slows down pure energy.
  • Nag – cobra, serpentine, of the mountains, created from solidity, metal, stone, name of a pran, elephant, gigantic, cloud, karmic bindings, etc.
  • Anant – fraction, infinite, sky, number 1, silk cord, unending, eternal
  • Koorma – means a turtle, a serpent, one of the pran in the body, a intricate knot or the energy which holds the Kundalini tied to the Muladhar chakra, or an intricate locking mechanism.
  • Vishnu – stabilising or potential energy of Satva gun
  • Laxmi – kinetic or moving energy of Satva gun. The ‘sign’, ie the created universes.
  • Dev – light, excellent, sword, organ of sense, heavenly etc
  • Asur – absence of light, cloud, spirit, sun etc
  • Mahabali – big gift, immense offering, large tribute, great worship, great strength etc.
  • Shankar – the stabilising or potential consciousness of the Tamogun.
  • Parvati – the active or kinetic awareness of the Tamogun
  • Mohini – energy of illusion, fascination, perplexity, confusion, delusion, attraction.
  • Sudarshan chakra – the energy of perfectly visible time cycles. The perfectly arranged energy which pulls inwards like a whirlpool. It destroys illusions in the sense it makes the cycle of creation perfectly visible.
  • Halahal – poison, snake, the reaction to actions done
  • Kalakut – false knowledge related to time/space, the concept of duality being an untruth, illusion of existence, foundation of time/space, destructive power of time/space, contained time/space
  • Chandra – Moon, water, shining, best, meter of prosody, beautiful, camphor, connected to the power of the Ajnya chakra etc.
  • Surya – Sun, number 12, auspicious, connected to the power of the Sahasrara chakra

Try to think on these meanings, in fact there are even more meanings, and to think on what these energies can mean in the allegory. We, followers of Sanatan Dharma do not follow anything blindly. We think, ponder, try to find the deeper essence of things.

The Rahu Ketu axis

The fourteen gems which manifested out of the Samudra manthan are,

  • Sharanga – Chakata bird, peacock, bee, elephant, the bow wielded by Shri Vishnu. The Sushumna of the spiritual aspirant on which he will shoot up the Kundalini like an arrow. The vibrations, energy build up, discernment, purity etc that the aspirants feel in the body/mind as he begins with his intense sadhana.
  • Varuni – liquor, created by the deity Varun, also linked to war elephants or war horses, the power of motion used for destruction. This would be the energy which pacifies or destroys the dissonant energies which get active as the Kundalini gets access to the lower Sushumna.
  • Apsara – a small creek, outlet into a larger waterbody, small waterbody, nymph, eddies of thoughts. This stage indicates the growth of divinity in the sadhak. Also indicate the turbulence of the mind which occurs during the Dhyan process. As you try to gain the unmani avastha the Manas/ Mind fights back by creating these attractive thought patterns to divert you away from yourself. Apsara is the wave which rises on the smooth surface of the internal ocean. These Apsara are under the control of Indra and reside in Swarg.
  • Kamdhenu – a being/cow that gives the essence of all desires and intentions. It is also considered to be stationed at the Muladhar chakra. Kamdhenu is the Queen of Cows, ie the magnificent power of vowels. The entry to the Sushumna.
  • Ucchaishravas – clearly uttered or heard loud rapid sounds, moving fast upwards, clear flowing precious substance. This is the sound that one hears when the kundalini starts on its journey in the Sushumna. (Shri sukta also describes the rising of the Kundalini). Ucchaishravas is the King of all Horses, ie the most excellent intelligence. Asur Raj Bali rides this as his vehicle.
  • Airavat – lightning, elephant, Devraj Indra rides him, ie control that the individual soul gains over the Muladhar chakra and its intricacies. When the aspirant brings his kundalini to the Swadhishthan chakra.
  • Kaustubh mani – oil, jewel, mudra, jewel which Shri Vishnu wears on his chest. The aspirant as he crosses the Manipur chakra.
  • Panchajanya – The conch used by Shri Vishnu. It means born from the five, condensation of the spread out substance, created using exact measures, crystallization of insubstantial energies, the sound of OM, the Anahata naada, heard when the kundalini crosses the Anahata chakra.
  • Parijat – connected to the one who has descended, linked to the one who has fully developed, fragrant, of the one who was conceived. This is the fragrance/aura that high level yogis or realised Jivanmukt emanate, ie the power that we sense in their aura. The kundalini has reached the Vishuddhi chakra.
  • Chandra – moon, water, shining, number 1, meter of prosody, gold, etc. It is the radiance that the aspirant sees at the Ajnya chakra. Seeing the Moon at the Ajnya chakra means that the next stage, ie appearance of the Prakruti is going to happen soon.
  • Vaijayanti mala – The streaks of pure energy seen at the Ajnya chakra as the aspirant starts his way to the Dashangula. Shri Vishnu wears this auspicious garland made of precious flowers.
  • Mahalaxmi – She emerged from the Ksheer Samudra with the Vaijayanti mala got married to Shri Vishnu and went to Vaikunth with her husband. The tremendousness that ‘Laxmi’ really is. ‘Shri’, seated on a lotus indicates the growth of Vivek and Vairagya in the sadhak. Lotus indicates complete control over Time and the cycles of Time. The Laxmi tantra describes what ‘Laxmi’ really is. At this stage the Sadhak has complete understanding of what creation is really all about. She liberates the sadhak from the bindings of the three gun. This is where you are face to face with Devi Prakruti, ie Satvagun too has been crossed.
  • Dhanvantari, the deity of Ayurved, with Amrut kalash in his hands indicates the aspirant is ‘healed from the taap-traya, ie Aadhyatmik, Aadhidaivik and Aadhibhoutik sources of pain are destroyed. All types of misery caused by his own actions, by the actions of others or the actions of fate/nature are resolved, cured and healed. Dhanvantari is a form of Vishnu, ie Satva gun and is the deity of Ayurved. We are required to do his pujas on Dhantrayodashi, which comes 2 days before Diwali.
  • Amrut – The energy of non-death. The stage of awareness where death, endings, limits, changes, etc do not exist. There is no beginning nor ending, Moksh. It Is.

Thus the 14 gems of prosperity describe the stages of the aspirant during his sadhana till he realises himself, ie Moksh.

Rahu and Ketu

Asur Svarbhanu was the child of the Asur King Viprachitta and his Queen Simhika. She was one of the daughters of Prajapati Daksha thus a granddaughter of Brahmadev. In Sanskrit, names have meanings and describe the qualities of the persons they are linked to. Names are Titles, not random meaningless ‘proper nouns’.

These titles in Devbhasha Samskrutam mean the following

Viprachitta विप्रचित्तः – Vipra means a seer, priest, poet, learned, wise, excited, in-motion, holy, inspired, the highest intelligence. Chitta means intention, notice, aim, mind,  appearance, something you long for, memory, thought, wish, knowledge, reason intelligence and also reflection. So Viprachitta is a pure, elevated intelligence in action.

Simhika सिंहिका – is derived from the root word Simha, which means lion, powerful one, hero, musical tone, etc. Simhika is the movement created by an elevated power.

Svarbhanu स्वर्भानुः – The name Svarbhanu is powerful title in itself, it describes the qualities of this Asur who later became Rahu and Ketu.

  • Svar means vowels, a musical note, sound energy, sunshine, bright space , heaven, the air that you breathe through your nose, the number 7, the space between the Sun and the Dhruv Tara (Dhruv is the pole star, he is the top of the celestial Meru).
  • Bhanu means the Sun, master, king, appearance, ray of light, illumination, etc.
  • Thus Svarbhanu would be the conscious intelligence of the very pran/ vital energy you breathe in. The light you see at the top most point of your internal Meru. The radiance of the king.

The intelligence of the time/ space around the Earth where the Sun and Moon apparently travel is called Svah स्वः In astronomy, Rahu and Ketu are the points where the orbit of the Moon around the Earth intersects with the ecliptic ie the apparent path of the Sun around the Earth. The intersection points of the Sun’s and the Moon’s paths of light are Rahu and Ketu. The divine spark ie the Sun is modulated by the Moon and tied to Earth by Rahu and Ketu.

In your sadhana, if you cross the Ajnya chakra and enter the Sahasrar complex you might find Rahu + Ketu in their united form of Svarbhanu lighting your way right till the very top.

You see, we are all beings of light. In my earlier post somewhere, I had asked you to try this simple test. Sit in a pitch black room. Now what do you see? Darkness? Swirls of coloured light? Streaks of light? A network of white light lines? Or a central white dot? What do you see? Do you see anything at all or is it all dark for you? As you do your Dhyan regularly, you stop seeing darkness. You never see anything to be dark. There will be no night to you. ie even in a pitch black room you will see light, even if you keep your eyes open or closed it will always be bright. This brightness depends on the level of your personal evolution, how much Pran you have managed to channelise into yourself. And this brightness is not external, but internal. It is the brightness of your own self. Just that most of us are so blinded by our own karma that we fail to realise it. We grope around in the dark, we are scared of the dark. But you and me, we are indeed beings of light.

Svarbhanu

Svarbhanu was a royal prince, born to powerful parents. He was powerful, perceptive, highly intelligent, able to see clearly inspite of the highest illusions which hid the reality around him. If you critically go through the Samudra manthan allegory, among all the Sur and the Asur present in the gathering, only Svarbhanu was able to comprehend that the Mohini standing before them was not what she seemed to be. He was not taken in by the illusion woven by the Satvagun. Only he had this clarity, the perception of the reality, despite the enticing allure of the Maya before him. Svarbhanu was able to maintain his senses in the face of Mohini’s illusions and act decisively. He was a risk-taker, not random rash risks but calculated risks where he thought that he could gain. He was going for the highest prize, the Amrut, essence of non-death. He decided to stand between the Sun and the Moon so that their brilliance would mask his aura. This worked and Mohini, ie Shri Vishnu himself, was unable to recognise him as an Asur and he was given the Amrut. But as he started drinking it, the Sun and the Moon realised that he was Svarbhanu and they alerted the assembly, Shri Vishnu then cut off Svarbhanu’s head with his weapon, the Sudarshan chakra (the kinetic energy of time/space used with intention). But Svarbhanu had already drunk Amrut, his awareness was beyond the coils of birth /death. Thus Rahu, the head and Ketu the headless body were created. These two are also beyond death.

Svarbhanu didn’t believe Mohini’s assurance that the Asur-s too would be given the Amrut, (which was perhaps the truth as after his beheading, Shri Vishnu didn’t give them their share of Amrut.) Thus he was the only Asur who drank Amrut and went beyond death.

Rahu is the start of the eclipse and Ketu is the flaming light that one sees at the end of the eclipse. We, the individual souls/ jivatma residing on Earth are always between them, pulled and pushed by them, in our own individual Ksheer Samudra Manthan. Rahu and Ketu are the energies which bind individual soul/ jivatma to karma, ie Earth.

They are created from the consciousness of the Svah स्वः by the Maya of the Satvagun using the kinetic power of time/ space. (Time is Kaal and Space are the Dasha Mahavidya).

Jyotish is used for objective as well as subjective analysis. Personally after so many years (lives) of horoscopes, objective questions like ‘when will I get a job’ are not exciting any more. Any competent astrologer can answer these objective questions using Jyotish as an Apara Vidya. But Jyotish is also a Ved-ang, a tool for self discovery, a Para vidya. As I open my chart, I see that everything which has happened to me, events, feelings, every tiny thing can be seen from the graha as indicators. I realise that I am quite predictable, so is everyone else. This 5-layered body can be easily deciphered using the graha indicators, no mystery here. So who am I really? A puppet, an actor, the director? These sort of questions lead to spirituality and a desire to know Oneself. Every genuine Jyotishi, Tarot card reader, Rune-caster, Aura-reader etc will eventually turn towards the inner self, it is the actual last frontier.

This is then Rahu Ketu or more correctly Svarbhanu at work.

Solar eclipse 21st June 2020

We are now fast moving towards the Total solar eclipse due on 21st June 2020, Sunday. This eclipse will be visible in Africa, middle East, India, China etc and the surrounding seas as per this map below. Totality will be visible in the areas with the darkest orange color and partial solar eclipse in the lighter shaded areas.

ecipse 21jun

This is the third total eclipse in the same Gemini-Sagittarius axis. The first one was one year ago, on 19th Jul 2019, visible over South America. This led to instability and political upheavals in several nations here. The second one was 6 months ago on 26th Dec 2019. And that eclipse too was over these very same areas/ seas as the one coming up. The turmoil which this Dec eclipse triggered in the world is evident. Now another eclipse of the same proportions in the same sign axis and primarily affecting the same areas of the world. This eclipse occurs after the penumbral lunar eclipse of 5th June (post here) so it will add on to the problems created.

This day, 21st June is the Summer Solstice, technically the power of the Sun is maximum on this day, especially in the northern hemisphere. Most of this eclipse will be visible in this Northern hemisphere. More intense the solar energies, the more intense will be the energy fluctuations.

Lets briefly check out the planet’s positions during this forthcoming solar eclipse

Taurus is an earthy fixed sign connected to resources, money, wealth, treasuries, good times etc. It will have Venus retrograde during the eclipse event. Venus has just come out of his combustion on 10th June his energies are not very normal yet. (This year he has no role in the Nav-nayak scheme of things so keywords ruled by him are anyways not much in focus.) So the economy overall etc is still in trouble etc. Venus has put in some work during his combustion and continued retrogression, but his material effect will be visible only after Sept 2020 and that too on low levels. The only saving grace was that he was doing all this retrograde and combustion in his own sign. A planet cannot harm his own sign so there will be some turbulence but eventually it will all work out. Also Taurus is the ascendant sign for India, so we will recover eventually. During the eclipse event, Venus is in Rohini lunar mansion which is connected to Moon’s energies and ruled by the deity Prajapati.

Gemini is an airy dual-natured sign connected to logic, analytical power, boldness, options, solutions to get out of turmoil, or actions which lead to even more turbulence. Your extended family, neighbourhood, siblings, same-age groups, office teams, etc. Gains from small businesses and trade. Teamwork, coordination, cooperation. This is the main sign where the eclipse is occurring. Naturally Sun and Moon are here together, it is an Amavasya/ no-moon day. Solar eclipses are always on an Amavasya. Rahu is triggering the eclipse. True Rahu is in forward motion and practically stationary in preparation for the eclipse. Mercury will be retrograde and combust here. This is an occultation by Rahu of a Sun who has combusted Mercury. So we must analyse this as a ‘composite Sun+Mercury’ eclipse. It is a Amavasya, so the Sun has already ‘combusted’ the Moon!

Now try to fit the patterns for yourself. The keywords of all these planets and Gemini sign are going to see a release of a very high quantum of astral energies. Whatever these planets/ sign stand for generally and specifically in your own chart are going to get this energy blast right in the face. Whatever in your life is signified by your Sun, Moon and Mercury as per your chart is going to be very heavily influenced by Rahu. What is Rahu? Rahu is simply the ‘energy of the desire to experience’. No energy is good/ bad by itself. It all depends on how you use or direct it. If your horoscope is strong enough to to accept and process this Rahu energy, it is a once in a life-time opportunity. Or if your horoscope is on a sufficiently high maturity level where you can understand and assimilate these energies. But if you cannot use this energy explosion then all these connected aspects of your life, overwhelmed by the Rahu-blast, will give you trouble, .

Sun, Moon and Rahu are in Mruga nakshatra. This nakshatra is connected to Mars’s energies.

Mercury is in Punarvasu nakshatra, in Gemini sign. This lunar mansion is connected to Jupiter. He is retrograde so you can think and analyse but actual actions taken during this period can fail in the long term. Especially avoid financial transactions during his retrogression.

Some astrologers will consider this to be a Kaal-sarpa combination. But on the Nakshatra levels, Mercury has crossed out of the nakshatra occupied by Rahu and is outside the hemming. Thus this is more a partial kaal-sarpa with only Mercury outside the Rahu-Ketu hemming. But he is combust ie the Sun has started ‘evaporating’ him.

Sagittarius a fiery dual-natured sign has Ketu in it. Sagittarius is connected to luck and is the foundation sign of the zodiac. True Ketu is in forward motion and practically stationary. This is the energy of apathy which has caused such havoc in Sagittarius. I had written about this in my old post on Rahu/ Ketu transits. We, as a human race, have been severed from our foundations, our divine back-up, our blessings and our auspicious merits from our past during this Ketu-Sagittarius transit. And now another eclipse, ie burst of Ketu energy, will again occur in this axis. He is in his own Moola nakshatra. Ketu is the ‘energy of non-desire for experience’ ie he is the agent of enlightenment or the Moksh-karak.

Capricorn – An earthy moveable sign linked to social structures, society as a whole, governments, jobs, salaries, profession, hard-work etc. Though this sign is not directly in the line of fire it still has the two planetary heavy-weights in very close conjunction. Jupiter retrograde and Saturn retrograde in Uttarashadha nakshatra which is connected to Sun. Those who have Saturn or Jupiter retrograde in their birth charts can see some opportunities coming up but for most of us this is a rather confusing period. Society is in a flux. Health and wealth are being affected as it is. Try to complete the work you undertake and try to be regular and disciplined about things. Do not leave loose ends which can create problems later.

Pisces is watery dual natured sign connected to losses of the material, astral experiences, isolation, moksh, etc. Mars is in Pisces and he aspects Gemini sign and the eclipse event with his 4th aspect. He is like an underwater volcano in Pisces. He is in Poorvabhadrapada nakshatra during the eclipse which is connected to Jupiter.

Just look at the configurations of the planets, signs and the lunar mansion. I think even a beginner in astrology can connect the dots even with just this much data. Astrology is all about learning to use keywords and making patterns. And observing.

The Rahu Ketu axis

The eclipse is releasing its energies in the Mruga-Moola Nakshatra axis, here is a bit about these two lunar mansions.

Mruga is connected to Mars, ruled by the deity Soma and represented by a deer. This eclipse in Mruga can increase mistrust, illusion, problems in relationships, emotional conflicts, stubbornness, irritation, arguments, confusion etc. There will be ‘movements’ which can cause trouble. eg travelling for no reason, or pain in travel, or movements in the earth, air water which will create problems etc. The outside environment will be turbulent, you will not find the things you search for. For some, medical problems connected to water/ liquids in the body or nerves can be triggered. There will be blocks on the creative and intellectual processes. You might find it difficult to stick to a particular path, goal, objective and act impulsively, rashly. These are some of the negative results because such a burst of energy if uncontrolled will lead to problems. Most of us will not attempt in the least to control or direct it so will suffer accordingly.

Now the other half of this axis, Moola nakshatra. Moola is the most mysterious of all the lunar mansions as the the center of our galaxy lies in this nakshatra. It is the ‘root’ energy connected to Ketu and ruled by Niritti. Ketu is occupying this during the eclipse. His power will get enhanced but in a curious way, for most of us the things which he signifies will be even more strongly obscured. A double-Ketu energy. Most of us will not even realise what we are going to lose with this eclipse. A sense of inquiry, rational logic will be lost. Medicines, remedies, healings will be confused. Some of us will be disconnected from the material stuff connected to the position of Ketu in the individual charts.

But for some of us, this is a life time chance. If you do your spiritual practice during this period and channelise this explosion. Then this eclipse will give a tremendous power boost. Auspicious events connected to removal of illusions, internal journey to the self, gain of the one-one relationship with the inner Self, emotional stability, burst of intuition, blessings of the Divine etc are very much possible. For some it can also grant the nectar of enlightenment! You can gain what you are deeply searching for, yourself! Ketu will allow pin-pointed enquiry into things. He will grant the deepest healings. Show the real nature of things. This will translate into the deepest Jnyan.

Eclipses are more suited to spiritual goals because the energy is released by a combination of Rahu/Ketu and Sun/Moon. (As you know Sun is linked to the Sahasrara chakra and Moon to the Ajnya chakra. Rahu/ Ketu are the energies of ‘desire / nondesire for experience’ which push your perfect internal geometry out of shape.)

But if you so desire, this eclipse can also translate into positive material goals connected to the houses of your individual charts where the eclipse is occurring. Murga and Mool both are quite capable of giving very significant material prosperity. But your own horoscope should be powerful enough to absorb this energy release and you should intend it strongly during the eclipse in your puja/ mantra/ Sadhana. Else this eclipse will bring negativity.

air fireAnalysis, Rahu in 5th, Ketu in 11th house

For individuals. On personal levels, there will be mental confusion, emotional upsets, misunderstandings, indecision etc as per the nakshatra affected. Impulse will run high as well as temper. So avoid arguments and avoid risky behaviour. This eclipse can give some positives for Aries, Leo, Capricorn especially as birth Moon signs. Those born in Moon signs of Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius might feel more of the negativity. Average results for Libra, Aquarius and Pisces birth Moon signs. Eclipses affect more on the inner levels so the impact on the birth Moon signs is more significant.

For the national-level events. There will be problems in the nations in which the Total Solar eclipse event is seen. To begin with there will be untimely heavy rains, cyclones, floods etc which can cause damage to crops, cities etc. So agriculture and animal husbandry etc type of professions will have to face losses. There can be earthquakes or flooding events, ie disasters which are sudden in nature. The economic slowdowns, public health issues (corona, dengue, malaria etc) will continue. And in several of these nations including India, civil riots and war-like situations will erupt. India should monitor internal situations in Pakistan, Nepal and China also, as instability or breakdowns there will also affect the entire region. All these nations will face deep instability. Soldiers and law enforcement agencies will have to work more. People and leaders who are perceived to be good, kind, honourable etc will face trouble by negative forces. The seas where this eclipse has touched will see irregular events, tides or rains will occur. The local fish etc may be affected leading to problems in livelihood. (In the total solar eclipse Jul 2019, the seas were more affected, thus global weather patterns were affected).

So this eclipse, the third and last one in the Gemini-Sagittarius axis will have far reaching effects on everyone. On a global scale the eclipse begins at 3:45 UTC and ends at 9:34 UTC. So it’s a global 5hr 45 min phenomenon on the global levels. Thus its effects will extend to about 5-6yrs for the entire Earth. It is advisable that everyone does some sort of puja/ mantra jaap/ spiritual practice during the duration of the eclipse so that the negative effects are reduced and at least some positivity remains in life.

The Rahu Ketu axis

(I have written on eclipses, their general effects and the mantra/ practices to be followed during eclipses. These eclipse predictions are also in the predictions for the current year posts. I have written a lot on Rahu/Ketu. Do use the index page to read these posts as I have not repeated these same things in this post.)

Rahu Ketu Experience of gain and loss

The orbit of the Earth around the Sun and the orbit of the Moon around the Earth intersect at two points, Rahu and Ketu. Astronomically these are just points where two curves intersect twice, but astrally these are huge chunks of conscious energies. Thus these satisfy the condition of being a ‘graha‘, a force and are called ‘planets’ in astrology. These are highly significant points representing how energy is pulled in into your psyche and then again released out from your psyche.

They represent the flow of your Experience.

You and me, all are part of the Ultimate Consciousness/Parabrahma.We are here to ‘experience’, the ‘one who experiences’ has priority. My experience is different from yours.

Rahu Ketu Experience of gain and loss

Rahu represents the inward pull of energy. Depending on his placement, you will want to experience the matters of his house, house owner, sign and conjunct/aspecting planets. Your sub-conscious self wants, desires, the energy of these experience. This energy is needed to balance out the karmic agenda you have decided on at your birthRahu represents all the aspects of life experience which you have ignored in your past lives. You are required to go through these aspects now. These have gained importance and urgency in this life, you have procrastinated long enough. And with Rahu pulling you, these events will satisfy you in a way nothing else will. Accept the energy. Maximum potential for growth exists in these areas of your life and if you sensibly use your Rahu, you will benefit.

The trick is to be aware of how much experience is experience enough. For e.g, You love your bike, the vehicle of your dreams, it can go upto 240 kmph, but would you drive so fast? No, it would create stress for you and would be dangerous too! A spectacular ride culminating in a disaster. You know you are a good driver and 120 kmph is your safe limit. It is logical that you drive safely and enjoy yourself during your drive, so you stick to 120 kmph. It is the same with Rahu, he has unlimited energy which he pulls into your inner self, but you are required to know your limits, so that you can be safe and enjoy the ride with Rahu.

Rahu is energy, how you use it is your decision. This decision requires a favourable placement of the other planets who are linked with Rahu’s matters. If he is aspected by benefics, benevolent planets, caring and loving energies, you are able to manage his desires more effectively. In a strong horoscope Rahu can take you to the heights of glory, both spiritual and material. This is a misconception that Rahu is a material planet, he is not! He is just the power of ‘desire’. Your entire horoscope, i.e. your mind-set and your conscious Will, these will indicate where this power of ‘desire’ is to be channelised. The power to manifest is always yours, You choose what you want.

The challenge that Rahu presents is this, you have extraordinary power of being able to ‘experience’ within you. How you open and channelise it is upto you. But it is essential that you immerse yourself in the ‘experience’, without getting attached to it. This is also the secret of Tantra. Immerse yourself completely in the experience so that you can transcend it. If you have experienced it all, the object loses its power to attract. Once you are satisfied, your stomach is full, you cannot eat even one more piece of your favourite sweets/mithai, you push the dish away. The desire has ended, the experience is complete. This is the challenge that Rahu puts forward before you.

Rahu Ketu Experience of gain and loss

Ketu is the other node – point of intersection, 180 degrees away from Rahu. Here you release the energies which are of no use to you. You have experienced these to your fill in your past lives so much so that they are of no consequence. You are apathetic to them now.

There is a hidden challenge here too, and because it is Ketu you are indifferent to his disinterested challenge. These patterns represented by Ketu are in-built, comfortable routines, which you unconsciously replay all the time. You are unaware of these patterns, but if you pay attention to your self you will notice them. And if you rely too much on these patterns you will not be able to gainfully leverage the new experiences of Rahu. See, Rahu/Ketu are always 180 degrees away from each other, the houses they occupy will be in the mirror image, fill-in-the-blanks format, seventh from each other. Rahu is offering you a load of experience, so the house he is in will experience rapid and spectacular changes. But to make sense of these changes, the house occupied by Ketu cannot remain inert! These two houses, the 180 degrees axis is linked very deeply to each other. To take control of Rahu, you have to become aware of the diffuse headless Ketu.

e.g Rahu in the 11th will desire the experience of gain, like-minded groups, luck, etc. And Ketu in the 5th will ensure that you remain apathetic to your personal self-ego, self-creativity, self-confidence etc. But if the self of the 5th house remains apathetic to the gains of the 11th, you wont know where to stop! You will continue being pushed by Rahu’s energies till you fall off! In the nebulous, market-place, environment of the 11th, the self-personality has to assert itself else you won’t even realise were you might end up. Thus this is the hidden challenge presented by Ketu which very few individuals comprehend in life.

If you have Ketu conjunct with other planets or if he is in your rising sign/1st house, know that in your past lives you have completed a large chunk of your desire for experience. These events were linked to these planets and in your past lives have changed your understanding of your self on very fundamental levels. You have transcended the experiences that these planets signify. And you have those learnings, these gift’s of experience with you on deeper levels. These gifts are often unusual, e.g. a highly developed intuition or an ability to roam in the astral dimensions. Ketu lessons are very necessary for you to progress on the spiritual level. Thus Ketu’s role as a Moksh-karak, agent of the Ultimate realization.

Ketu is linked to ‘loss’, thus you experience this astral energy of loss in this life too. Loss of relationships, loss of love, loss of parents, loss of security, loss of wealth, loss of home, etc depending on his position in your chart. It is also a challenge here. Can you accept this loss on the material, emotional, spiritual level? Will you fight to keep this energy from moving out? The experience of these losses starts early in life and continues till you become conscious of them. e.g. If Ketu indicates a ‘loss of maternal love’, try as you might, you will not be able to experience it in this life. You may search for it, you may try to hold on to it, or try to get it from others, but they cannot give it and neither can you receive it.  Realistically, you cannot stop Ketu. Sometimes you have to let go of some things so that you make space for the new (Rahu) experiences entering your life.

But for the lesson to be complete, you have to be aware of what is happening, you have to be conscious of their experience-energy dynamics. Unless you register what is happening to you on the experience (Rahu/Ketu front), you will be made to repeat these again and again. Thus their perpetual retrograde motion. The movement of the nodes is quite erratic, so is averaged out and this is called as a ‘Mean Node’

Rarely I get a horoscope where the person seems to processes his experiences in a fundamentally different way. So I check out the mathematically correct nodes (True nodes) for this chart. In these cases, the nodes move in the direct motion. Direct motion occurs when eclipses occur, and eclipses are very important events creating an explosion of energy. If the birth occurs around an eclipse, there are undercurrents of different energies in the chart, which is linked to the direct nodes. These individuals can progress faster if they turn their attention to the spiritual and metaphysical.

So if you feel like it, do open your own horoscope (Vedic software). Look at the positions of Rahu/Ketu and the aspects of your life that they influence. If you have major planets conjunct with them e.g the ascendant lord, Moon, Sun or if they are located in the ascendant sign. Analyse yourself in terms of your life experience. It will be a very personal and instructive exercise which will help you know your innermost motivations and life path experiences.
