The 12th house, support or sabotage

The 12th house and its energies are often glossed over in readings. It can be an uncomfortable house and needs to be understood in the right perspective. The sign/ planets connected to it secretly and unconsciously support or sabotage your mind/ body. The energies move inwards, so if there are several planets or major planets here or the house is as a whole incapable of giving good results then selfish behaviour and unhealthy self-obsession can result. If this sign/ planets is unable to give good results, then there may be depraved behaviour, unnatural or self-destructive patterns, disturbed spiritual energy, restlessness, inability to rest or insidious damage to the self/environment. If you can consciously work through these and come to terms with their expression, you can achieve a lot in in the inner worlds.

The 12th house is the karmic imprint of your immediate past life. These are your strength/ weakness from that life which you used as your current life’s base. Inauspiciously placed sign/ planets here indicate that you have decided to repay the negative karmic debts from your past lives. The 1st house is derived from the 12th house, so you are compulsorily required to rebalance them now. One way you can make sense of a painful 12th house is, to understand that you are repaying negative debts owed from past several lives to a large number of people. It will ultimately be for the good.

The 12th house, support or sabotage

Isolation is a very common motif of the 12th house. Banishment from the home-town even under the guise of better prospects elsewhere is still an internal problem. Your work may require isolation, you work in a research laboratory but you are still isolated from your society. Or punitive, you might be confined in prison or places apart from society because of your own actions. Prisons are meant for those who misuse their physical abilities and engage in criminal actions. This is the retribution in this life administered by the legal system of the society. The mentally challenged are those who misused their intellect in their past lives and in this life are denied access to their mental processes. These are also isolated from the society and/ or confined in mental asylums. This is karmic retribution administered by their own conscience at the moment of death of their past life. Similarly for physically handicapped people who do not have or cannot use their limbs. Here presumably the individual is required to reflect and regain their perspective and rebalance themselves.

The experiences of your mother as you were being created in her womb and your early childhood upto 7yrs are also linked to the 12th house things. If you have major planets in your 12th house try to think back on what your parents told you to not do, ‘don’t cry, don’t be late, don’t be a baby, don’t.. ‘. This is an expression of your 12th house energy. This ‘don’t..’ has shaped your life in a very deep way and even as an adult trying to do those forbidden things can cause internal stress and discomfort. But you are an adult now and these things need to be resolved else you might carry them onwards to your next life. So try to bear through the sub-consciously felt terror and let these 12th house impressions systematically out in the open. If you try to deny them and push them again beneath the surface they will continue creating problems.

If you were told ‘don’t be a crybaby’, you might have problems expressing your genuine emotional hurts. It is a deep automatic compulsion which you cannot overcome. If you even think that you will tell your friend that you are feeling hurt, your BP will shoot up, fingers go cold, heartbeat accelerates, it is a in-built compulsion to stay silent, there is fear. This is an extreme example, but people do feel like this about their 12th house things. Eg Saturn in 12th house, you will never be late, if you even think of being late, you will get an anxiety attack. Try to consciously examine this in-built behaviour and gradually reduce its hold over you. If you think about these things, analyse them and gradually understand them, your fear of them will reduce.

The 12th house is energies which are not allowed expression in your conscious life. So these churn and accumulate below the surface and at the critical point explode spectacularly.  The more something is denied expression, the more severely it bursts out. This can manifest as a disease which is detected at the very terminal stages. Or can be an emotional breakdown. Or a break in whatever keywords of the sign/planets associated. Over-reactions. So do pay attention to the transits and the Dasha periods. Also give yourself an outlet once in a while.

Eg a Mars in the 12th house won’t let you lose your temper much. This is called a Manglik placement. So give him an outlet, go to the gym and bring out all your inner aggression there, learn a martial art perhaps. Regulate these energies before they erupt in disorganised dangerous and damaging forms. Now what happens when you do explode. Eg you have 12th Mars and your husband is at the receiving end. He has forgotten your birthday and the last time you raged was a more than a year ago. So now in an instant, you will remember every tiny thing your husband did to irritate you in the past year. Everything which you didn’t react to in that long time will come to the surface in one red flash. That entire anger will be like lava pouring out. Your husband is in shock because he thinks you have perfect temper, you do not rage like this. And you feel your every word to be justified. You rage till you are drained, now you might cry as this is a form of release. Result, possibly an irrevocable break in the relationship. Your 12th house has sabotaged you. This can happen triggered by typical transits/ Dasha periods.

Now the 12th house is the resource from which your persona/ environment has been sourced. So even if you are not aware of its energies you radiate them! Eg Saturn here will make you appear very strict and disciplined. As a senior you will be feared by your subordinates. You will come across as a fair but rigid boss. And all the while you might have a very different idea of what image you are projecting as you are unaware of this Saturnine aspect of yourself! Now what you project, you will attract too. So here, you will attract even more Saturnine energies which do not support but will suppress you even more, a vicious cycle will start. If you ever become aware of the Saturn in you and balance it, you will find life becomes subtly less restrictive.

The 12th house, support or sabotage

Now a damaged 12th house will spill over most on the 4th and 8th houses, the Moksh trikon. The 12th and 8th houses are the dushamsthan, houses of turmoil and the biggest dushamsthan, the 6th house, is the mirror of the 12th house! So you can rebalance your 12th house by directly working on it or indirectly through these other houses.

The 4th is the astral depths, comfort, safety, emotions, residence, vehicles, lands, mother, nutrition, traditions, home-culture etc. If you actively increase these energies in your life either by experiencing them yourself or giving them to others as charity you support your 12th house too. Heavy energies in the 12th house often deny or restrict nurture, and the person often repeats the same with his child. but if he can become aware and change, get involved and nurture his child, this helps him balance his own energies too.

Most effective remedies are helping out at orphanages and old-age homes (it is a second childhood in a way). We help the most vulnerable in the society thus address the deepest vulnerability within our own selves.

The 6th is karmic service, debts, diseases, enemies etc basically serve or suffer. Your understanding of karmic debts and your ways of repaying them is all here. There are two options, either fall ill yourself or help those who are ill. This is free will, you choose. So if you choose to proactively study your 6th house and work on ways to repay the energy debt this will help channelising your 12th house energies too. Eg you see people with Rahu in the 12th house often settling in foreign lands. These people choose to get disconnected from the land and everything of their forefathers and go serve in a strange land. From the energy point of view leaving the homeland is always a problem. (A friend lives in the USA, has non-stop dreams of her ancestors. The easiest solution is to feed a cow, give her a chapati and a lump of jaggery. In India, desi humped cows are all around. There in the USA there are no desi humped cows and she says if she feeds an animal like this she might get put in jail! But her ancestors want the energy so the dreams continue.)

The 8th house can also be used to link to the energies of the 12th house. This can range from occult practices, tantra, private meditation, manipulation of pran/ vital energies or the other extreme being several sexual affairs.

Then the planets connected to the 12th house can naturally be used to channelise their energies in a proper way. Eg If you have Mercury there, write as much as you can! Another very effective way of rebalancing the 12th house energies is to use your dreams. I have written about using a dream journal, this can be a very good way of channelising your dreams or doing targeted dreaming which helps rebalancing the energies of the sub-conscious states. So the 12th house is a very important house and you should be consciously aware of it. Being aware of your own vulnerability is a big thing. Do not shy away from it, analyse it and the planets placed in it carefully. Too many planets in the 12th house or the ascendant lord or the Moon or the Sun in the 12th house always indicate physical and mental weakness. Be careful of the health of your body and mind. Always remember to put yourself, your concerns and your interests first. This is important. If you feel exhausted or drained, take care of yourself first. How much ever, difficult it is to communicate, seek professional help too.

Rahu and karmic relationships

Matching charts for marriage is a routine job for an Indian astrologer. There are several rules prescribed for matching charts for a successful marriage. If the astrologer is good, he will also give an overview of the two charts seen together, a snapshot of what their life together can be like. Everyone brings in their own karma into relationships, and karma is best defined by Rahu/Ketu. I always consider Rahu- Ketu to be very valuable indicators in a chart. Even if the client has no specific questions regarding these, they should be analysed. They tell you where the subconscious is directed, pulled by the ‘desire to experience’ energy of Rahu and pushed by the ‘apathetic to experience’ energy of Ketu. Karmic relationships are those which are carried on from past lives and are more focussed on completing the unfinished karma. Relationships which are linked by Rahu are quite powerful, they are forward-oriented and focussed on growth potential. Rahu indicates karma linked to the present and the future you look forward to. A Rahu linked relationship offers a chance to both for growing and learning together in this lifetime. Also an opportunity to accomplish the work together which perhaps either could not complete alone in this life.

Rahu and karmic relationships

Pull out your and your best friend’s chart for this mini exercise. This ‘friend’, would be someone close to you, with whom you have the most intense relationship in terms of ‘experience’. Your brother/sister, parent, husband/wife, child, best friend etc. This is how you go about it,

  • e.g. If your Rahu is in your 3rd house and your friend’s Venus is his 3rd house, the 3rd house matters will usually be the focus of your relationship together. Matters of the 3rd house will be lucky for both as long as the relationship lasts.
  • You can check out the signs too, if your Rahu is in Aries and his Mercury is in Aries, both will benefit from Aries-related matters. But this effect will be less intense as compared to the houses as above.
  • Generally the matters of the other planet will be in focus in the relationship together.
  • The one whose Rahu is involved benefits from the planet of the other. This other planet provides direction and guidance to the Rahu. And Rahu provides his energy and the thirst for experience to the other planet.

Rahu – Sun

This is a very deep connect and can last a life-time. Rahu amplifies the Sun’s powers which can be good for both. The Rahu-friend gives the power, strength, desire, luck and optimism for the future. The Sun-friend gives inspiration, self-confidence, creativity, healthy sense of self-ego and leadership. The Sun-person will drive the relationship, i.e. decide the common goals that the two will pursue together. However both will have to ensure that this does not create ego problems. There may be an undercurrent of ‘father’ or ‘mentor’ type of feelings between the two.

Rahu – Moon

An emotional connect between two people which can last a life time. The Rahu-person amplifies the Moon associated qualities of the Moon-person. The relationship is more nurturing and ‘feelings’ dominate. The Rahu – person provides support of the outgoing type, physical protection etc and receives emotional nurturing from the Moon-person. Both should take care that the relationship doesn’t turn into ‘needy love’, it might then convert into a mother-child type of relationship. The Moon is the sum of your existence and Rahu is an astral force, so this relationship can be quite intense and both may remember past life incidents from their common lives.

Rahu – Mars

This is a very intense connect which can go both ways. Initially the two attract each other with their outgoing natures, high energy activities and even enjoy arguing with each other. But with time, disagreements and conflicts will increase, thus this does not make for a long term success. This relationship will be very exciting, dynamic and at times challenging. There is abundant energy, luck, desire and cooperative spirit, together against the world. They can be good in technology or brotherhood type of activities together. The Mars-friend needs to be careful about his self-ego and not hurt the Rahu-friend’s self-ego in this relationship. Also might manifest into to a on-off type of relation where both are often separated and then meet up for short intense periods.

Rahu and karmic relationships

Rahu – Mercury

This combination is quite good for long term relationship. Rahu will amplify Mercury-activities, communications, team-spirit, playing, being together etc. Both will support each other in their hobbies, interests, learning skills etc. Talking on the phone always, messaging and being in touch, both might share the same tastes and have common interests. Both find it very easy to relate to each other, laughing at the same jokes. Best friends who can complete each other’s sentences! This connect is the best possible for ‘best-buddies’ or even a successful business partner duo. Mercury is quite intricately connected to ‘desire, his Gemini is the first 1/3rd of the Kama trikon. So Rahu-Mercury can give a very successful relationship on whichever level it manifests.

Rahu – Jupiter

This is a good combination of two grahas who apparently seem to be opposite in nature. Both share hopes, higher learning and wisdom. Rahu provides the drive and Jupiter the benevolence. These two can grow with each other long-term. Both may have different view-points but in the background they both think on similar lines. This is a combination of ‘desire to experience’ and the ‘ability to philosophise’, thus together they make a great deal of sense. This connect supports both material, philosophical and spiritual growth. If these two people meet when they are older/more mature they might be better able to support each other. Experience and wisdom both balance better with age.

Rahu – Venus

This is a good connection and tends to grow deeper with time. There is scope for romance and also respect for each other. The Venus-person will give his wisdom/ love/ ‘relationship-glue’ depending on the level he is operating. The Rahu-person will protect, provide the luck, the fierceness and the common direction in their lives. This is one combination where Rahu actually feels responsible. Depending on the house in which this is happening this can lead to romance, physical relationships, marriage and other common relationship interests. ‘Attraction’ is the word around which this connection will evolve. And then the secret, there is enormous potential here, of esoteric wisdom and growth in metaphysical/ occult. Venus is not the ‘planet of love’, he is Daityaguru Shukracharya, with all the knowledge and seriousness that goes with it. The strictest Teacher of the most difficult students. And Rahu is a Daitya. So Shukracharya is Rahu’s Guru! There will always be an undercurrent of teaching and learning in this relationship. (I know two friends with this combination, they have tantric abilities way beyond their ages.)

Rahu – Saturn

This connect can get difficult because Saturn is restriction, discipline and constriction. If Rahu amplifies all this Saturn stuff, it can create issues and the relationship might remain a short lived one. However if the house in which this is happening is a suitable environment for Saturn-Rahu then it might work wonders. e.g this can work nicely in the 3rd (personal courage), 6th (service and sufferings), 8th (death and catastrophic transformations), 11th (gains) house energies. This is quite a serious connection overall, Saturn-person helps the Rahu-person in various material ways, e.g. by systemically organising things for him in profession and work. The Rahu helps the Saturn by bringing in ‘luck’, to find legitimate short-cuts etc, innovative ways to to reduce his work load. But a Rahu-Saturn background is always serious. It is a good connection for non-personal relationships, distant relationships, group activity type of interests etc.

Rahu and karmic relationships

Rahu – Rahu

Both friends are very similar in what they desire in this life. Both want the same sort of experiences, Rahu in the same house (or sign) in each’s chart, will ensure that both are attracted to similar things. Both thus have a very deep understanding of each other’s deepest motivations and inclinations. Then Ketu-Ketu will also exist as Rahu-Ketu are 180 degrees apart. So both have similar past experiences and learning from them. This is a good combination for companionship and friendship. The only possibility where Rahu-Rahu connect can lead to a conflict is if both want the actual same thing/object/person rather than the experience. Then this can get ugly with no limits on what each can do to the other!

Rahu – Ketu

This is very good for companionship in the real sense and is usually a life-time connect, growing deeper with time. A connect of two opposites who are actually One. This gives each an understanding of the other which can neither be articulated not understood completely, just experienced. There is genuine sympathy, affection and each appreciates the other’s life path intensely. The simplest reason is this, the Ketu-friend knows at the deepest levels what the Rahu-friend is going through at present, and will go through in the future. The Rahu’s present/future is Ketu’s past experience. And vice-versa! Both are astral graha, complete when with each other. Thus the two friends feel the other as the missing-link which completes each at the deepest level. But this will also lead to several misunderstandings on the material levels as they are both motivated and apathetic to exactly opposite things. It will take some time and effort to sort out things, but once they do it will be a very complete experience. (I know a couple of friends, with a Rahu-Ketu linkage in the birth chart and the same combination in their divisional chart-9, navamsha chart also. Unbelievably linked on all levels.)

So this was just a frame work on which the Rahu-linked synastry relationship will evolve. The finer details will depend a great deal on the house in which this combination is happening. Also keep the social and cultural background in mind. Rahu does not mean that the two will break out of the socio-cultural norms and engage in aberrant behaviour. These are mental and psychological patterns you are analysing. And, since it is Rahu involved, they will always be significant, ‘the desire for experience’. If you have someone in your life with such a Rahu – synastry, analyse your this relationship in great details. It will help you understand your own self better.

Rahu and karmic relationships

Rahu Ketu Experience of gain and loss

The orbit of the Earth around the Sun and the orbit of the Moon around the Earth intersect at two points, Rahu and Ketu. Astronomically these are just points where two curves intersect twice, but astrally these are huge chunks of conscious energies. Thus these satisfy the condition of being a ‘graha‘, a force and are called ‘planets’ in astrology. These are highly significant points representing how energy is pulled in into your psyche and then again released out from your psyche.

They represent the flow of your Experience.

You and me, all are part of the Ultimate Consciousness/Parabrahma.We are here to ‘experience’, the ‘one who experiences’ has priority. My experience is different from yours.

Rahu Ketu Experience of gain and loss

Rahu represents the inward pull of energy. Depending on his placement, you will want to experience the matters of his house, house owner, sign and conjunct/aspecting planets. Your sub-conscious self wants, desires, the energy of these experience. This energy is needed to balance out the karmic agenda you have decided on at your birthRahu represents all the aspects of life experience which you have ignored in your past lives. You are required to go through these aspects now. These have gained importance and urgency in this life, you have procrastinated long enough. And with Rahu pulling you, these events will satisfy you in a way nothing else will. Accept the energy. Maximum potential for growth exists in these areas of your life and if you sensibly use your Rahu, you will benefit.

The trick is to be aware of how much experience is experience enough. For e.g, You love your bike, the vehicle of your dreams, it can go upto 240 kmph, but would you drive so fast? No, it would create stress for you and would be dangerous too! A spectacular ride culminating in a disaster. You know you are a good driver and 120 kmph is your safe limit. It is logical that you drive safely and enjoy yourself during your drive, so you stick to 120 kmph. It is the same with Rahu, he has unlimited energy which he pulls into your inner self, but you are required to know your limits, so that you can be safe and enjoy the ride with Rahu.

Rahu is energy, how you use it is your decision. This decision requires a favourable placement of the other planets who are linked with Rahu’s matters. If he is aspected by benefics, benevolent planets, caring and loving energies, you are able to manage his desires more effectively. In a strong horoscope Rahu can take you to the heights of glory, both spiritual and material. This is a misconception that Rahu is a material planet, he is not! He is just the power of ‘desire’. Your entire horoscope, i.e. your mind-set and your conscious Will, these will indicate where this power of ‘desire’ is to be channelised. The power to manifest is always yours, You choose what you want.

The challenge that Rahu presents is this, you have extraordinary power of being able to ‘experience’ within you. How you open and channelise it is upto you. But it is essential that you immerse yourself in the ‘experience’, without getting attached to it. This is also the secret of Tantra. Immerse yourself completely in the experience so that you can transcend it. If you have experienced it all, the object loses its power to attract. Once you are satisfied, your stomach is full, you cannot eat even one more piece of your favourite sweets/mithai, you push the dish away. The desire has ended, the experience is complete. This is the challenge that Rahu puts forward before you.

Rahu Ketu Experience of gain and loss

Ketu is the other node – point of intersection, 180 degrees away from Rahu. Here you release the energies which are of no use to you. You have experienced these to your fill in your past lives so much so that they are of no consequence. You are apathetic to them now.

There is a hidden challenge here too, and because it is Ketu you are indifferent to his disinterested challenge. These patterns represented by Ketu are in-built, comfortable routines, which you unconsciously replay all the time. You are unaware of these patterns, but if you pay attention to your self you will notice them. And if you rely too much on these patterns you will not be able to gainfully leverage the new experiences of Rahu. See, Rahu/Ketu are always 180 degrees away from each other, the houses they occupy will be in the mirror image, fill-in-the-blanks format, seventh from each other. Rahu is offering you a load of experience, so the house he is in will experience rapid and spectacular changes. But to make sense of these changes, the house occupied by Ketu cannot remain inert! These two houses, the 180 degrees axis is linked very deeply to each other. To take control of Rahu, you have to become aware of the diffuse headless Ketu.

e.g Rahu in the 11th will desire the experience of gain, like-minded groups, luck, etc. And Ketu in the 5th will ensure that you remain apathetic to your personal self-ego, self-creativity, self-confidence etc. But if the self of the 5th house remains apathetic to the gains of the 11th, you wont know where to stop! You will continue being pushed by Rahu’s energies till you fall off! In the nebulous, market-place, environment of the 11th, the self-personality has to assert itself else you won’t even realise were you might end up. Thus this is the hidden challenge presented by Ketu which very few individuals comprehend in life.

If you have Ketu conjunct with other planets or if he is in your rising sign/1st house, know that in your past lives you have completed a large chunk of your desire for experience. These events were linked to these planets and in your past lives have changed your understanding of your self on very fundamental levels. You have transcended the experiences that these planets signify. And you have those learnings, these gift’s of experience with you on deeper levels. These gifts are often unusual, e.g. a highly developed intuition or an ability to roam in the astral dimensions. Ketu lessons are very necessary for you to progress on the spiritual level. Thus Ketu’s role as a Moksh-karak, agent of the Ultimate realization.

Ketu is linked to ‘loss’, thus you experience this astral energy of loss in this life too. Loss of relationships, loss of love, loss of parents, loss of security, loss of wealth, loss of home, etc depending on his position in your chart. It is also a challenge here. Can you accept this loss on the material, emotional, spiritual level? Will you fight to keep this energy from moving out? The experience of these losses starts early in life and continues till you become conscious of them. e.g. If Ketu indicates a ‘loss of maternal love’, try as you might, you will not be able to experience it in this life. You may search for it, you may try to hold on to it, or try to get it from others, but they cannot give it and neither can you receive it.  Realistically, you cannot stop Ketu. Sometimes you have to let go of some things so that you make space for the new (Rahu) experiences entering your life.

But for the lesson to be complete, you have to be aware of what is happening, you have to be conscious of their experience-energy dynamics. Unless you register what is happening to you on the experience (Rahu/Ketu front), you will be made to repeat these again and again. Thus their perpetual retrograde motion. The movement of the nodes is quite erratic, so is averaged out and this is called as a ‘Mean Node’

Rarely I get a horoscope where the person seems to processes his experiences in a fundamentally different way. So I check out the mathematically correct nodes (True nodes) for this chart. In these cases, the nodes move in the direct motion. Direct motion occurs when eclipses occur, and eclipses are very important events creating an explosion of energy. If the birth occurs around an eclipse, there are undercurrents of different energies in the chart, which is linked to the direct nodes. These individuals can progress faster if they turn their attention to the spiritual and metaphysical.

So if you feel like it, do open your own horoscope (Vedic software). Look at the positions of Rahu/Ketu and the aspects of your life that they influence. If you have major planets conjunct with them e.g the ascendant lord, Moon, Sun or if they are located in the ascendant sign. Analyse yourself in terms of your life experience. It will be a very personal and instructive exercise which will help you know your innermost motivations and life path experiences.

Rahu Ketu Experience of gain and loss

Remembering Past Lives

It is rather easy to remember past lives. Small children can do it very easily, but as we grow up the present life’s impressions become stronger thus remembering the past life more difficult. But there are several means of doing this, most commonly past life regression trances, or guided meditations, or Dhyan-mediations.

Our past lives are always accessible and if you really need some information from there you can pull it out. In fact, your sub-conscious will make it available to you. If you have some spiritual background it will be easier to do so. Even normal people with little or no spiritual base find themselves doing things because their intuition tells them the way. Intuition is nothing but the accumulated experiences of all your past lives. It is the real you, and it is always available as a ‘gut feeling’! Sometimes you like someone for no real reason or hate someone on sight, these are not irrational feelings but are sourced from deep within your entire lives-experiences.

If you are really interested in knowing about your immediate past life, you can, easily. This past life chart is same as the D-1 birth chart, but here you will count the 2nd house from the ascendant, as the 1st house of the past life chart. So to find out your personality of the immediate past life, check out the 2ndhouse of your current birth chart. Use the keywords from this post to check out the rest of the houses and thus know your immediate past life.

There are some combinations which allow you greater access to the astral store of past lives. The most important one is Rahu/North Node in the 12th house or in Meen/Pisces rashi, especially aspected or conjoint with Jupiter either in the D-1 birth chart or D-9 navamsha chart. This will allow you to remember the wisdom acquired in the past lifetimes. The combinations involving the 12th house which force you to leave your home and settle abroad are also favourable for accessing past lives.

The Navamsha D-9 kundali is the chart you have to refer to know about your Real Self forged by the experiences of all your lives. For example I know a chart where the person in his past lives, either was always left a widow/widower or continually abandoned his/her spouse. There was intense love on the subconscious levels but not much physical interaction because of these death events. His Venus of the D-9 in the 12th house shows this episodes of loss of physical relationships as a permanent feature. If he marries again, this pattern will be repeated. But his D-1 has Venus exalted in the 9th, aspected by the Moon and Jupiter. This indicates that he was able to convert the loss of the physical into the gain of the spiritual and has developed a perfect relationship with his personal philosophies and Self. This will lead to his Moksh soon.

Remembering Past Lives

However there is a recent trend where people visit a hypnotist for knowing about their past lives, through induced trances and regression. This in my opinion is needless and can lead to even more trauma. E.g. you have an irrational fear of thunder and lightning so you go to a consultant. He puts you into a regression trance and you realise that you have in some past life been killed in a lightning strike. All good, the trauma will be resolved now that you know why. But now this hypnotic trance is not a normal action, someone has actively invaded your sub-conscious self. The self has no control on what it is showing you from your past life. So then you see that you were out in the rain because your husband beat you and threw you out of the house, you had nowhere to go. And that husband is now your present life’s son, who now genuinely cares for you. Now what? You have unnecessary information which will now affect your relationship with your son!

There is a reason why the D-9 navamsha kundali and the D-1 basic birth chart are different. You cannot experience the present if you always have the entire past from all your past lives in front of you. In a very broad sense there is nothing called as ‘Time’. There is only a single moment and all your lives from the past, present, future and all the parallel universes are all happening just this instant. The seers and sadhus experience this Moment and thus Enlightenment. As you progress spiritually, you also will access even more information as your mind is able to absorb. Training the mind to absorb the Experience of the Universes and Itself is a slow process. If your mind gets over loaded with information that it cannot make sense of, it will shut down and go insane. There have been several incidents where hypnotic trances went wrong and the person lost his mind. Too much information was revealed during the hypnotic ‘rape’ of the astral self that the physical conscious self, collapsed.

We are continually evolving, in each life. Even if you are not consciously aware of it, you move even closer to your ultimate desire, Moksh! So concentrate on your present manifestation, the experiences you are here to learn and the karmic balances you are here to work through. You learn through your interactions with other humans. This is a continuous process. You cannot desire to go back to your past and relive or re-do anything. It has already occurred and you have already learnt from it. And it may be confusing too. We move as a soul-group, inter-connected souls living with each other in all ways, in all relationships and experiences through several lives together. Your mother from your past life is now your son, so how do you wrap your mind around this concept? Even if your best friend, a man now, was your sister in some past life what can you really do with this information?

Remembering Past Lives

Another important thing is that in every life the soul manifests a different reality D-1 which is derived from the D-9. Now when your best friend was your sister it was a different personality, it was not her as he is now. Now he is a very different person from who your sister was. It is a mind bender! Too much information about the past causing problems in the present.

Since we have been discussing our continuum of lives, here is something that you should think about. The physical body does not endure, it destroys itself. But the astral body endures. If you focus on developing physical attributes in your life remember that you are investing your energies in a very temporary thing. But if you develop your mental, emotional and spiritual qualities they will be stored in your astral body. These assets will be available to you in your subsequent lives too. A tiniest bit of activation and your assets are back. This is the reason in the Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism), there is a huge focus on spiritual development. It is your asset for all lives to come. You will build on this resource in every life till you finally attain Moksh!

Navamsha, 9th divisional chart

Astrology is a bottomless ocean of information. Jyotish is one of the 6 branches of Vedanta and is the science used to find out the events which are going to happen in a life time and their timing. Thus it is high mathematics coupled with deep study and intuition. Divisional charts are extremely useful, however you need the exact birth-time, an error of even 15 seconds is not acceptable. If accurate birth time is not available the divisional charts are extremely misleading and should never be calculated.

For a complete analysis of your personality you will need to analyse at least the following

  1. The birth chart with the ascendant as the first house – This is the 1st divisional chart or D-1. The basic chart which we always refer to, the birth chart with the ascendant as the first house. The D-1 is rooted in time/space. This determines the physical, material and social aspects of your life. It is ideal for predicting the tangible events which occur in the ‘real life’, marriage, education, children, travel, business, health, death etc.
  2. The birth chart with the moon sign as the first house – This sets up the emotional context and the comfort zones of your personality. This is how every tangible event affects you on the emotional level. Eg, the Saturn influencing the Moon will restrict emotions, the person’s mother may die, a tangible event, but he will not be so emotionally disturbed because Saturn restricts the mind and emotions.
  3. The Navamsha, 9-th divisional chart – D-9, is used to analyse the astral, spiritual, emotional and psychological planes. These are the real source from which the chart D-1 derives its power and context.

Professional astrologers will not do all this as they have no need or time. Most clients have very materialistic questions. However for knowing more about your own self, everyone should do this analysis for his own horoscope.

You are not just the physical self which you see in the mirror, you have various sides to your personality and also several parallel states of existence. Jyotish has ways to look deep into all these personalities and planes of existence. And these charts are called divisional or Varga charts. In this post we will discuss the 9-th divisional chart or navamsha. The mathematics for calculating varga is quite different but we have software that does this, for Indian/Vedic system, for windows, “Jagannatha Hora” or “Parashar’s Light” gives all the several types of divisional charts. But if you need just the Navamsha/9-th divisional chart, for iphones “Drik panchang” by developer “Adarsh apps” is quite accurate.

The D-9 is used to determine the strength and pre-dispositions of the astral self. We spend about 8 hrs completely in the astral realm when we are asleep. But even when are are awake, the events from the astral are going on side-by-side with the conscious self. If you are aware, you can ‘see’ these from the corner of your eyes, or register them as a 6-th sense. If you engage in some spiritual practice it will be easier to notice these events. The D-9 will not make much sense to you unless you are a bit spiritually inclined.

The D-9 is not used for predicting the tangible life events. The D-9 is sort of a complicated continuous ‘Now’. You ‘are’ your D-9 which is manifested in the physical environment as the D-1. The D-9 is not linked to time/space and it represents everything from your past and parallel lives which is influencing your reality/D-1. You are your astral self, you manifest portions from your astral periodically with the placements of the D-1, and then again go the astral to recover. This happens temporarily while you sleep and permanently when your body dies. Do read my post on Moksh trikon to understand more.

The D-9 tells you, what is possible, what you actually want. So, in a way, it sets the range for the D-1. The D-1 happens within this range. The indications of the astral are slightly in advance of the physical, so if you can see the astral body/aura you can predict a disease or death upto 6months in advance.

Most astrologers will use the D-9 to determine the actual strengths of the planet positions in the D-1. Or for marriage predictions. But in reality all the graha in D-9 should be analysed. The relationship between the D-1 position and the D-9 position of a graha will determine if the astral expectations are in harmony with the material reality that it manifests.

Eg, one of my clients has the D-1 Saturn in the 12th house and in the D-9 it shifts to 4th house. The astral D-9 Saturn restricts emotional shelter, comfort, maternal love, deep healing and recovery. He enforces un-protection, rootless-ness, homeless-ness and not-belonging. This astral expectation is manifested in the D-1 12th house Saturn which further restricts access to the sub-conscious, rest, sleep, guidance from the astral and spiritual. Thus this person never had an emotional connect with his mother or relatives, is working and living away from his home town, shifted residences several times. Has a need for emotional support which will never be granted and his spiritual practice is also highly restricted, he never sleeps properly. So the readings from the D-9 and D-1 match. The karmic/Saturn solution for him is to learn by the negative example. He will be required to comfort/help others who suffer the same problems as him. And because he knows exactly how bad it feels, he will be required to ensure that these others do not feel the same. Thus he will heal slowly/Saturn.

So how to link the D-1 and the D-9.

Our life is a sequence of events. These events are neutral by themselves but when emotional labels put on them, they become ‘experience’. The D-1 is the ‘sequence’ and the D-9 is the ‘label’. Check out the planets in the D-9 charts, their placement houses and their keywords. These will be important as significant emotional labels/experiences will be associated with them. If a particular house has more planets, this house will be in the center stage for ‘experience’.

D-9 placements are like emotional triggers. If you can analyse them, you can heal them. E.g. D-1 South node/Ketu in the 5th will give a disconnect with the children. Now if the D-9 also affected, eg Saturn in the 5th, this reality of disconnect will be accepted internally. But if the D-9, 5th house has a Moon placed in it, the physical reality of disconnect to the child will be severely traumatic on the sub-conscious emotional level.

The most intimate relations can be the cruelest teachers linked to the deepest ‘experiences’ requiring re-balancing and healing. Thus the experience of marriage is always seen in context of the D-9. The more intimate the relationship, the more intensely emotional the interactions. So in matching horoscopes for marriage, you should also match the two D-9’s. There should be some linkage between the two D-9 charts at the deepest sub-conscious levels to avoid trauma and pain of failed expectations. The other in a relationship is often the mirror. The significant relationships of our life follow this rule to a great extent, mother-child, father-child, husband-wife, teacher-student, boss-employee are some of the relations which deeply affect our psyche. So all these experiences can be interpreted from the D-9 so you can try to improve your responses in these relationships and learn your lessons so that you can escape being caught in these learning situations again in the future lives.

The D-9 is the basis on which the immediate next life will be created. The astral moves a bit faster than the physical, thus the astral is also the seed for rebirth. Your emotional affinity and the direction of your energies is already shown here. Most important is to remain calm, focussed and actively participate at the moment of exit, this can be achieved by intellectually analysing your deepest motivations and expectations. If you can interpret the D-9 you can change your choices for the next birth by actively redressing the imbalances shown in it. Generally no one thinks on these lines but you can redress the imbalances by

  • actively helping others who are suffering in the same manner as you are. Learning by negative example is the domain of Karma. Eg if your parents never looked after you, you could go help out at a children’s orphanage.
  • doing mantra pujas for the unbalanced planets. I had written a whole post on this, but perhaps this is too technical.
  • sending energy to the unbalanced planets. Sounds too wild? But as I have repeatedly said, you can do anything with your intention. Reiki, chi-balls, or even the natural energy of the Universe can be directed to the planets in your horoscope. Planets are energy!
  • doing regular spiritual practice where you silence your conscious mind and allow your sub-conscious mind to operate.

So do remember that you always manifest what you sub-consciously expect. The truest indicator of these sub-conscious expectations is the D-9, these are the seeds of the future which will be manifested soon. Studying the D-9 and taking remedial actions can resolve un-balanced planetary energies which would otherwise impact several lifetimes.
