Naming your baby, the astrologic twists and turns..

Being blessed with a baby is a life-time event. When you hold your bundle of joy in your arms you know that your life has changed for ever. You are now a mother/father and you feel all the happiness, responsibility and it’s a mixture of emotions!

After the baby is born, the most important question becomes naming him/her. The 12th day of life is when the baby is named, the Namkaran Sanskar. Here almost everyone in the family jumps in with a name, right from the grandparents to the uncle/aunts to the brothers/sisters of the baby, everyone wants their choice of the name to be given to the baby. But luckily we have Jyotish and the astrologers. By invoking their authority the parents can avoid the more out-landish names and at least choose one of their choice!

Naming your baby, the astrologic twists and turns..

The baby is to be named on the basis of the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon at the time of birth. It is no big deal, this table below is available everywhere. So why this post? And why refer to an actual astrologer? The table is quite clear. But have you seen the alphabets? Eg if the Moon’s nakshatra is Ashwini you have a choice between the starting sounds ‘chu, che, cho, laa’. Rather difficult to find names beginning with these!

But apart from these literary problems there are more serious reasons why you should not directly copy paste from the table.

You should not name your child as per the Moon’s nakshatra syllables if….

The Moon occupies a dushamsthan, ie if he is in the 6th , 8th or 12th houses in the birth horoscope. (Some astrologers will also consider the 3rd house to be equally bad). A Moon in a dushamsthan is already under stress. The baby will be suffering losses, catastrophic changes, demands for service, medical conditions etc linked to the Moon’s agents. If you name him as per the Moon’s nakshtra it will amplify the effects on him/her.

If the Moon is conjunct malefic planets or heavily aspected by malefics. The Moon is unable to give his full benefic effect. The malefics restrict him and there will be issues related to the Moon’s agents in life.

The Moon is under a heavy influence of the Gandant placement. Here the Gandant effect is going to affect the baby’s early childhood, so avoid naming him/her with the same syllables.

Now find out the father’s and the mother’s birth Moon sign. You already know the baby’s. See if there is a 6/8 axis operating between the baby’s and the mothers’ birth moon signs. And also is there is a 6/8 adversarial axis between baby and the dad. (Good astrologers will also check the 2/12 axis) Eg. Baby has Aries moon, mother has Pisces moon and father has Virgo moon. So baby-mother is 2-12 axis and baby-father is 6/8 axis. As it is the child is going to have a slightly antagonistic relationship with the parents because of this placement. The emotional understanding between them will be slightly off. They might feel a bit emotionally uncomfortable with each other. It is not a problem but a slight under-current will exist. To reduce this effect, avoid keeping the baby’s name from his moon Nakshatra syllables.

Naming your baby, the astrologic twists and turns..

So if not the Moon’s nakshatra then which one? Here are the options,

The Nakshatra of the rising degree. Eg if the rising degree is 2deg Aries it is in Ashwini nakshatra. So you are basically enhancing the energy of the rising degree /ascendant degree. However if the ascendant sign/1st house is suffering the same issues as above with the Moon nakshatra then avoid this one too.

The Nakshatra of the atmakarak planet. For this check which planet has the highest number of degrees in the chart. ie which planet as advanced maximum into his sign. Use the syllables of the Nakshatra that this planet is placed in as another option.

Finally the last option, choose the Yogkarak planet’s Nakshatra or the Nakshatra of the best possible benefic planet for the chart.

And if possible give him/her a name which has a meaning in itself. Ie a name derived from Sanskrit. It is his own personal mantra, so let it be a word of inherent power.

There is another thing, to avoid any family member feeling upset, the parents let everyone name their baby, so at the end of the naming ceremony there are 3-4 names tagged to the baby. The parents then finalise the name when the kid is registered in school. This is a waste of the power generated during the naming ceremony rituals. It is a Naamkaran sanskar, compulsory for Hindus. Choose one name and give it to the baby with all the intention and power generated in the ceremony. Don’t let your relatives overpower!

Now, you are grown up and you realise that the name you are given does not resonate with your horoscope. There are two options, one is to change your name which might be a complicated legal process. Second is to choose a nick-name starting from the appropriate syllable. Do as you feel is convenient. But when you choose your new name, do this small exercise. Write your name 108 times on a piece of paper with full concentration and intention. The name change will be more auspicious.

A name is power. Your mom calls you by your diminutive names but when she really wants your attention she uses your full name. And the effect is electrifying, you get all alert and ready for what will come next.

So I guess the poet was wrong when he said that ‘a rose by any name!’.

(So whoever asked the question in the contact form, Yes names are important on the spiritual front too and all the best and blessings for your baby.)

Naming your baby, the astrologic twists and turns..

(A personal experience, my name is quite long, Tejaswini. It was given to me by my Guru. He did the Naamkaran when I was a baby. But because it was so long my family members rarely called me by the full name, they used a diminutive. Later when I grew up, I faced some problems in my spiritual practice. So my Guru was like eyes rolled up, exasperated, ‘no one calls you by your given name! How do you expect to succeed?’ So then I got everyone to call me by my given name and a lot of things fell into place! The name does carry power.)

Jupiter Mahadasha

I have written a very detailed post here on Vimshottari dasha analysis, generally on how evaluate the effects of planets during their planetary periods. This post is about the time periods controlled by Jupiter. Here are two posts on a short-cut analysis based on which houses these the planets own.

Now Jupiter Mahadasha will follow Rahu Mahdasha in sequence. If your birth moon Nakshatra/ Lunar mansion is Punarvasu, Vishakha or Purvabhadrapada you will have your Jupiter Mahadasha going on at your birth. The balance of the planet’s dasha period remaining at birth is calculated using the location (degree/minute/second) of the Moon in the nakshatra. If you get this birth time wrong your starting point will be wrong thus your entire life-time’s calculation will go wrong.

And then of course Jupiter’s sub-periods/ Antardasha in other planet’s Mahdasha will also carry his flavour.

Jupiter Mahadasha

Jupiter mahadasha is quite long, a full 16 years. If he is well placed this period can be extraordinary covering a lot of life’s major activities, education, marriage, children, health and profession. This post is a framework post in which you will add your keywords depending on the planetary positions in your own chart. Here you will learn how to analyse Jupiter’s period yourself. If you already know a bit of astrology then go through the stepwise analysis. If you just want to know the overall indications then you can skip forward to the actual general results further below.

Step 1 is to know the aspects of life which Jupiter represents and the power he has to deliver his results.

  1. Jupiter in your birth chart (also called the divisional chart 1/D-1).
    • Which house and in which sign is he placed? Which aspects of life is he controlling? If he is controls the dushamstan, 6th house, 8th house or 12th house then there might be some unpleasant material results.
    • Is he in the sign of a friend/neutral/enemy planet.
    • Is he exalted/debilitated?
    • Which planets is he conjoint/ aspected by? Thus which other aspects of the personality is he influencing directly and indirectly.
    • Has he matured? Is your client yet to reach the maturity age of Jupiter or is the maturity being held back by conjunction with later maturing planets? Jupiter matures quite early in life but e.g. if he is conjoint Rahu he will mature at 48yrs!
    • Is he retrograde?
    • Is he combust?
  2. You can repeat this same analysis from the birth Moon sign to get the effects that this Jupiter Mahadasha is going to have on the emotional aspects. Rotate the chart around and place the sign containing the Moon in the first house and re-draw the chart. These aspects of life will often be completely different from what is happening on the physical level. (If you find this complicated, do it whenever you feel more confident.)
  3. And this same analysis using the divisional chart 9, Navamsha chart will give a perspective on the sub-conscious expectations and also the sum total of Jupiter’s potential. (If you find this complicated, do it whenever you feel more confident.)

A simple example, if in a chart, in D-1 – Jupiter is the owner of 1st house, Sagittarius and 4th house, Pisces. Jupiter is placed in 4th house house, Pisces (this becomes a Kendra-adhi-pati combination!). Moon is in 10th house Leo. In D-9, this Jupiter shifts to the 2nd house in his exaltation sign Libra. Thus Jupiter-Moon in D-1 are placed in the favourable 7/7 opposite axis. Period of Jupiter will give emotional happiness. Also the sub period of Moon in the main period of Jupiter will give beneficial results. Jupiter is the ascendant lord so in his periods will give expansions to the personality and create an enabling environment. So during overall Jupiter’s period there will be a sub-conscious expectation of money, family time, happiness, speaking out, gains from/to the family. The physical environment will grant lots of interactions, validation, money, resources, good times, with family, property, mother, females in general, siblings, bosses, culture, traditions, society and profession. But the person will not be able to make the most of these material opportunities because of his essentially mild nature, the kendra-adhi-pati effect. But as the emotional expectations will be satisfied the period will go by reasonably well.

Step 2 Smaller segments are called successively Antar-dasha, Pratyantar-dasha, Sookshma-dasha and Pran-dasha. The logic on how to analyse these even smaller units remains the same for each planetary owner of the sub/sub periods.

  1. Find out the power of the sub-period planetary lord and the aspects of life that he controls just like Step 1 for Jupiter above.
    • Which houses he rules over.
    • Especially if this sub-period lord is the owner of the 2nd or 7th house (Marakesh) its sub-period within the Jupiter Mahadasha can cause physical death. If Jupiter himself is the Markesh then he can cause death in the sub/sub-sub periods owned by him.
  2. The mutual relationship between Jupiter and the sub-period lord. If they are in the 6/8 or 2/12 or 3/11 uncomfortable aspects, that sub-lord’s sub-period will not be comfortable. They will be worse at the start of the sub-period and become better towards the end. Ultimately give a sense of expansion and optimism.

Step 3 is the routine planetary transits/ Gochar which will modify results during their transit periods. Using your software draw your birth chart on a paper and superimpose the current planetary positions on it. Use a different pen so that you can make sense of the composite chart you are drawing. Check out for the aspects and their strengths.

We use the Vimshottari dasha system to time events. One single placement in your chart will indicate so very many things. How to know which event will happen when? For this timing aspect you have to see the Dasha and the transits. The broad framework will be your D-9, the important events will be reflected in the D-1. The broad framework for the timing will be the Dasha and the fine-tuning will be the transits.

Jupiter Mahadasha

Now to analyse the sub-periods of the Jupiter Mahadasha, each of the 9 planets including Jupiter himself will own one of these sub-periods/antardasha in sequence. These are very very general readings just to trigger your own thought processes. Use these for reference, as a starting point for your own further analysis. Every horoscope is unique!

1. Jupiter antardasha/sub-period –

  • You have analysed your Jupiter’s power to give results in step 1 above so this sub-period will be a double dose of Jupiter.
  • If Jupiter is poised to give you good results then expect expansion in all forms, gains, happiness, your boss will appreciate you, marriage is possible, your husband will shower you with affection, you will gain wealth and also spend to make your life more comfortable, children may be born to you, you may gain students, children will be well and bring you joy. You will perform religious activities, go on pilgrimages. Higher education, teaching jobs might get available. You will get support from your spiritual teachers, your peers, ancestral spirits will bless you. You think on philosophical lines, meditate or read something which nourishes your soul. You feel hopeful!
  • If Jupiter is going to give you adverse results then this period can be a bit difficult. Jupiter placed in the 6th, 8th, 12th houses or Jupiter as a ruler of the sign placed in these dusham-sthan. Especially in Libra and Capricorn ascendant charts, as Jupiter is a functional malefic here. Evaluate your chart carefully. There will be episodes of anxiety, stress and distress. The same keywords of your life as above can be a source of problems. However Jupiter will ultimately create a spiritually inclined personality but the way he will do this will not be pleasant. In these cases the first part of the sub-period will be more problematic than the second half. Be careful if you get body pain, go to a proper doctor.
  • Overall this period will create a lot of opportunities which you can actively explore. Keeping in with Jupiter’s expansion, optimism, benevolence and wisdom you will take up new activities with hope and positivity.

2. Saturn antardasha

  • Saturn and Jupiter are generally neutral to each other as both respect elders, value knowledge, are quite serious about the karmic lessons. However there is one difference, one expands and the other contracts.
  • Depending on Saturn’s position in your chart expect increase in your duties. But your energy and enthusiasm in performing those duties will be enhanced. You can be in prominent social positions, given more professional responsibilities, a promotion, your father will benefit. More authority in your hands. Interactions with the government, superior officers or social seniors will be fruitful. You will be given resources. You will gain.
  • But if Saturn is poised to give you malefic results then this will be a period of conflicting energies where the expansion of Jupiter will hit the terribly constrictive influence of Saturn and you will suffer strain in all these aspects of life mentioned above. Physical health can be a problem in this case, especially disease of the bones, teeth, skin and nerves. Your birth father may suffer or you might suffer because of him. In Saturn’s periods its always better to submit to whatever regulations and work-plan that he puts you to. However you can modulate the negative effects by planning your life and work before he does it for you.
  • Jupiter Mahadasha

3. Mercury antardasha

  • Jupiter and Mercury are not the best of friends but they are karmic mirrors of each other. So ultimately compatible in the spiritual sense. If one is the teacher the other is the student. They get their real meaning only when they are with each other.
  • If they both are in a good favourable axis expect best of both worlds. You will have the philosophy as well as the skill to convert this theory to action. Your students, brothers, brother-figures, extended family will support. You will earn money through speculation or stock markets. Financial investments will be in your favour. Communication is enhanced in every way, any place where you are required to talk, explain, read, write, instruct will be enhanced, you might learn a musical instrument! Your ability to think, plan, analyse is enhanced. Also Mercury is action, your hands. So any actions which you do with your hands are energised. You might learn a new skill or a craft. You will be granted the boldness and courage and this sub-period will be quite beneficial for you.
  • If they are not working together and are placed in unfavourable angles to each other then these above keywords will give you stress. Psychiatric problems are possible. There will be a danger of theft and cheating. There can be medical problems in nerves and skin. Pay attention to details but keep the larger picture in mind too, this will help.

4. Ketu antardasha

  • Ketu is the agent of dissolution of the material. He also takes on the character of the planets aspecting /conjunct him. So evaluate his karakatva /ability to give results, very carefully first.
  • If Jupiter and Ketu are mutually well placed this sub-period can give very good gains on the spiritual front. Whatever is draining your spiritual energy will be cut off. And because it is Jupiter involved, you will know what and why it has been released. There will be full understanding and joy in this process. If Ketu’s gains the ability to give material results as a result of the planet influencing him, then he can grant all these things in his sub-period. In this case he will grant material stuff especially through speculative means.
  • But if Ketu is badly placed, then this period will cause problems, this can include physical death or feelings of emptiness and abandonment. You might strive for something which you can never attain. Jupiter’s hope is misguided and you face rejection. Everything that Jupiter stands for can abandon you. Your husband/wife, your boss, your children, the philosophies you live your life by can leave you. You will experience the loss of the material. This will ultimately pull you towards the spiritual side but the process will give you pain.

5. Venus antardasha

  • Venus and Jupiter are the two Guru’s. Both are quite friendly with each other, their ‘enmity’, is on the philosophical level. Both are teachers but their students are very different, Venus’s students are the worst goons and his teaching methods are very different.
  • If Venus and Jupiter have a good working relationship then you will have a very good time. Benefits from all sources, relationships, money, social and emotional fulfilment, spiritual progress, new partnerships, bargains, asset creation, gains from spouse, enjoyable time with your loved ones. Marriage, promotion,  pilgrimages, journeys, birth of children etc are all possible. There will be recognised leadership roles and dignified teaching roles in this period.
  • Relations with the opposite gender, girlfriends/boyfriends are quite possible. But this period wont allow marital infidelity unless malefic influences.
  • If Venus is badly placed in your chart, there will be tensions in relationships, both personal and professional. You will lose your spiritual moorings so it will be worse. Spouse and children will suffer with you. Sisters, wife and women in general will be a source of stress. You might get addicted to damaging substances. Loss of wealth and litigations can result. However if you are aware of what is happening you can plan and reduce the impact of these events on yourself.
  • Jupiter Mahadasha

6. Sun antardasha

  • Sun is leadership and self-ego. You desire to be known.
  • In this sub-period, if Sun and Jupiter are working well together, you will get a change to display your creativity. Your intelligence, speculative intelligence, creative genius, confidence, entitlements, charisma, etc will be enhanced. You might gain promotions, wealth, financial assets, money through stock markets ans similar speculations, marriage and birth of children is quite possible. If you are a creative writer, actor etc your publications and acting roles will be appreciated. For the politically inclined, this is a good period for political gains.
  • If the Sun is placed in an adversarial relation with Jupiter, or is badly placed then there may be some problems from the above aspects of your life causing stress. Problems with relatives and children are possible. Medical issues caused by ‘over-heating’ are possible. Jupiter and Sun get along quite well, so this sub-period will be reasonably ok.

7. Moon antardasha

  •  Moon is the sum total of your self, astral sub-conscious, the depths of your emotions, your intuition! Moon and Jupiter are quite good friends and Jupiter in in fact exalted in Moon-owned Cancer! So this period can be quite good in any case.
  • You will get close to your mother, maternal figures and home-land cultures. If you get married during this period, choose someone from a similar cultural background else it will cause issues. Child-birth, buying new houses, cars, property is quite possible. You might get into spiritual stuff, mediation, new education avenues etc. Nutrition, nurture and nature will be pleasing. Comfortable life and emotional security.
  • If Jupiter and Moon are poised to give unfavourable material results then you will be in a bad time. Your mother will give you bad advice. You will be in trouble because of your over-attachment to your homeland culture, maybe you get married and are unable to adapt to your spouse’s culture! Dreams, sleep astral self, sub-conscious states will be disturbed. Diseases related to the blood, liquids in the body are possible. Mental peace and emotional comfort will be denied. Will live away from home, will travel, the body will suffer on the physical and astral levels (Pancha-kosh).
  • However the results of what the planets are capable of giving are very important. Do this analysis very carefully. This is the foundation of your
  • I know a chart with a Jupiter and Moon placed together in the 12th house. Death occurred in the Mahadasha of Moon, sub-period of Mercury(ascendant lord), sub-sub-period Jupiter. She died of internal haemorrhage, the exact day was when the birth Moon transited this 12th house (blood/liquid expanded into the internal spaces of the body, all these keywords match with the chart). The soul took on the pret-yoni /spirit state and entered the Pitru-lok with very high level of energy because of this placement of Jupiter/Moon in 12th house (do read the Moksh-trikon).
  • Jupiter Mahadasha

8. Mars antardasha

  •  Mars is dynamic, challenging, pioneering and physically moving.
  • If Jupiter and Mars are together well placed you will benefit from your brothers, extended family as well as elders. Professional initiatives will grant success. Marriage is possible. You will be known socially, respected. Any physical activity which requires initiative will be promoted. Relations with the opposite gender, girlfriends/boyfriends will be many.
  • Mars is the ruler of the 2nd and 7th house for the Libra ascendant so during his periods he can cause physical death. So here if he is conjoint Jupiter, this sub-period can easily cause physical death, if the longevity has reached its limit.
  • One thing which you can observe is, your Mahadasha and Antardasha at the time of your marriage. Your spouse will reflect the nature of these two planets. Or check when your child was born, the nature of this child will also reflect the natures of the dasha controlling planets of your that time.
  • Mars can create problems if he is badly placed. Especially the start of the sub-period will be more troublesome than the latter part. There will be diseases related to ‘over-heating’, eyes and blood can be affected especially. Aggression, arguments and ill-relationship will be expanded.

9. Rahu antardasha

  • This is the chidra-dasha the last sub-period
  • Rahu is the exact opposite of Jupiter, he is sneaky, calculative, breaks rules, aspires for higher stations. In the closing phase of Jupiter mahadasha, Rahu cuts off your Jupiter persona. He accurately identifies all those things where you have let others take advantage of your benevolent Jupiter phase. Rahu will take stock of what you needed in these 16yrs, not what you gave of yourself. Misplaced hopes, humanitarian thoughts, misdirected charity work will stop. Even knowledge which you may have gained, if not furthering your personal goals and desires will be discarded. Rahu is very thorough about this, he will infuse ambition in all that Jupiter created. And this will be linked to your karma.
  • So during your Jupiter main-period, however kind and generous you may feel for others do keep track of what you are gaining from the interactions. This does not mean you have to be selfish, Jupiter will not allow you to be selfish. But at least be aware that what you are doing should benefit you too in some way or the other. This will make this last Rahu chidradasha more easy to navigate and you will be able to better consolidate your gains from Jupiter. Rahu will prepare you for your next Saturn persona, thus he will link your gains from Jupiter with a deep understanding of your karmic desires
  • Rahu takes on the influences of the planets conjoint/aspecting him. So do analyse his Karakatva (ability and strength to give results) before predicting material results.
  • If Jupiter and Rahu are poised to give good results together then he will give material pleasures and gains. Money, power, ambition, good physical health, pilgrimages, spiritual progress will be enhanced. Rahu is the things you have been ignoring in your past lives so under the influence of Jupiter, Rahu can actually grant you ambition with understanding a rare gift indeed.
  • If Rahu and Jupiter are not well placed together then there will dangers from cheats, disputes, thieves, diseases, marital discord, professional ruin etc caused by Rahu’s nature to over reach and then fall flat on his face. So if you have this combination in your chart do rein in your ambitions to what is realistically possible.

Jupiter Mahadasha

The generic remedy for those suffering from problems during this period of Jupiter Mahadasha is doing puja or reciting any mantra of Shiv or Vishnu or reciting the beej mantra of Jupiter on Thursdays, or doing his Homa, or donating any material associated with Jupiter etc.

You can also wear more of his colors, use the scents dear to him, eat more food associated with him and similar fun things to balance out his energies.

Jupiter is generous and benevolent, he expands everything he is connected to. And every house has some positive and negative things on the material front. Astrology tells you the options you have available, it is not fatalistic! So if you are going through his period, be very conscious and choose intelligently. You can choose, Jupiter allows this. So use his energies with confidence and intelligence so that you can gain on the spiritual as well as material fronts during his Dasha periods.

Remedies for Gandant nakshatra births

I had written about the Gandant or Gandamool gap of the zodiac in a past post. There is a question on this, thus writing some more. Gandant affects the Moon or the ascendant degree. The closer to the gap the more severe the effects are.occultIn India, the new baby’s horoscope is seen after the 12th day. On the 12th day the Namakaran/naming ceremony is performed. Also, till this new living being is not named, a period called “naatak’ is observed. During this period, no puja/rituals can be performed in the family in which the birth has occurred. Now if there is a Gandant nakshatra seen in the child’s chart, a Nakshatra shanti puja should be performed at the earliest, within a month of the birth if possible. If the parents are unable for some reason (maybe the baby is not well and the parents are busy), the baby’s paternal grandparents or paternal uncle can be entrusted by the parents to perform it at the earliest possible auspicious timing/muhurt after the birth.

(Shanti puja is a ritual to calm down the agitation caused by the severe energies of the lunar mansion, a pandit/priest helps perform it.)

It is possible that the chart was never seen and the child grew up with whatever problems, later the parents came to know of the Gandant. Even then do the Nakshatra Shanti puja on the next convenient muhurt, do not think the time is lost. The energies of the puja will help the child now onwards at least. This puja can be repeated on every (vedic calendar) birth day.

Now it is possible that the chart was never seen, these pujas were never done and the child grew up, became an adult etc and then came a sub-period of Mercury or Ketu or the ascendant lord where the person started facing severe problems. One young man I know, has a severe Moon in Revati Nakshatra Gandant. He went to an astrologer and the person scared him by telling him that he will die in a few years. This is what I dislike about modern astrologers. Death may or not come, that is the future. Let’s focus on what can be done at the present moment! The correct advice in this case would be this,

  1. Do the nakshatra shanti puja at the earliest possible auspicious timing, it will help balance something at least.
  2. On every birth day (as per vedic calendar), do the same Nakshatra Shanti puja with the pandit/priest. Or do any of these pujas for longevity, good health and auspiciousness – Ayushya homa, Mahamrutyunjai homa, Navagraha Shanti puja,
  3. Or if cannot afford a priest do a Mahamryutunjai Homa by himself. It is a very simple fire ritual/homa, takes one hour to perform.
  4. Or cannot do this at all, cannot afford it or cannot find the resources, then recite the Mahamrutyunjai mantra 108 times at least one Monday every month.
  5. Or if has access to a vedic panchangam, and knows the Nakshatra which is Gandant, he can recite this Mahamrutyunjai mantra 108 times on that day of the month in which the transit moon occupies that same nakshatra in transit.

occultIn fact I would suggest for everyone to do this Mahamryutunjai Homa on auspicious days, birthdays, etc, whenever you feel like doing it. I had written about it earlier in some post, it will work for all health and longevity related issues. The homa basic post is linked here. The preparatory and concluding phases remain the same, for the mantra-phase use this mantra, at every ‘ swaha’ a drop of ghee is to be put in the fire.

“Om trayambakam yajamahe, sugandhim pushtivardhanam, Om haung, joong sah, maam mrutyur palaya palaya, rogan mochaya mochaya, ayur vardhaya vardhaya, Sah joong haung Om, ururvarukamiva bandhanat, mrutyur mukshiya maam amrutat, Mrutyunjayaya rudraya, neelkanthaya shambhave, amruteshaya sharvaya, mahadevaya taenamah Swaha”

(Or if you feel this variant to be quite complicated you can use this simple version “Om tryambakam yajamahe sungandhim pushti vardhanam uruvarukamiva bandhanat mrutyur mukshiya maam amrutat Om Swaha” for the mantra phase)

Birthdays are very important. On these 2 days every year you should really do something to recharge your energies. 2 days? yes, your birthday as per the solar calendar will be the same as your birthdate as per the English calendar (maybe one day before or after), on this day your sun will be in the same degree as it was the day you were born. And the second as per the lunar day, the exact degree in which your moon was in and the same sign your sun was in when you were born. These are the 2 days when your personal energies are resonating with the energies of the time you were born. So if you do some personal intense energy practice on this day, it will deeply repair and heal.

Gandant, the gap of the zodiac.

Nakshatras/Lunar mansions are the basis of Vedic Jyotish, but we too have become too lazy and use the approximate system of rashi/signs, but if you want to really perfect your predictions, you have to know your Nakshatra. Start with the very basics then build up.

The 27 Nakshatra are owned by the 9 planets in a sequence starting with Ketu and ending with Mercury. So there are 3 sets of such 9 nakshatra as per their planetary owners. At every junction of this set, ‘Gandant’ operates. This is a very basic post to pique your interest.

  • So in the first 3 degrees and 20 seconds of every Ketu owned Nakshatra i.e. Ashwini Magha and Moola
  • and the last 3 degrees and 20 seconds of every Mercury owned Nakshatra i.e. Ashlesha, Jeyshtha and Revati, exists this gap called Gandant.

This arc 3 min 20 sec can be approximated as 1/4th of the Nakshatra or one Pada of the Nakshatra if seen very broadly. The Gandant operates at the boundary of watery and fiery signs. i.e Pisces – Aries, Cancer – Leo and Scorpio – Sagittarius. If the birth moon or even the ascendant degree falls within this Gandant zone, there are a few typically peculiar situations in life. Let’s analyse the how and why.

Moon represents the mother, the mothering, nutrition, nurture, emotions, rest, sleep, sub-conscious, mind, astral self, emotions, comfort, security, protection, liquids, house, vehicles, the traditions, heritage, culture, cold, watery etc.

Ketu is dissociation, apathy, disinterest, separation, amputation, unwanted, not-needed etc. But he is the moksh-karak, inclines to the spiritual and is fiery in nature.

Mercury is the analytical working intelligence, skills, superficialities, quickness, duality, impressionable nature etc. He is an enemy of the Moon.

Ascendant i.e. the rising sign represents your personality, the physical body and the overall environment and status in the society.nak1The Ketu owed Nakshatra Gandant operates in the start of the fiery signs Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

If the birth moon is in the Ketu owned Nakshatra Gandant, this child has been born in the first phases of the Ketu mahadasha, most likely the first sub-period owned by Ketu himself. This is a very uncomfortable position to be in, double dose of ‘Ketu the headless’ and he has been born into it. The closer to the start of the nakshatra, the more severe the effect. Ketu is fiery by nature creates a strange dissociated environment for the comfort-seeking moon. Then these fiery signs make the Moon rather uncomfortable.

  • Having the Ketu dasha operating at birth can lead to disconnection in several ways, maybe isolated in a natal care ward, or abandoned at birth, or put in an orphanage, or facing parental neglect or even death if it is severe.
  • Then follows the entire Ketu Mahadasha of 7 years. The early childhood is marked by neglect and abandonment issues which have the potential to scar the physical body’s growth. Nutrition and care can be denied.
  • This is Moon Gandant so the emotional expectation of the child is neglect and he himself is emotionally apathetic to overtures from his parents and family too. But in this his body and mind’s growth suffers.
  • Such a child will be more ‘spaced out’, can communicate with the astral/sub-conscious realms and can move on the spiritual path quite well if he gets guidance from a responsible Guru.
  • The Ketu Mahadasha is followed by Venus Mahadasha so then this child will suddenly seem to blossom, develop, create relationships etc. (Unless Ketu is conjoint Venus, in such a case the Venus Mahadasha will be a similar continuation of the Ketu experience, 20 more years of it)
  • If Ketu is aspected by benefics and placed well, the effects will be less severe. Also evaluate the strength of the Moon, the house he is placed in. And the power of the ascendant lord for a more complete picture.

If the rising ascendant degree is in the Ketu owned Nakshatra Gandant, it will give pronounced effects on the physical/manifested body more that the astral/emotional self. It can result in Ketu type of medical problems including surgeries, physical handicaps, etc depending on severity.nakshatraNow when the birth moon is in the Mercury owned Nakshatra Gandant, these will be the last parts of the watery signs Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio.

Mercury considers the Moon as an enemy and this planetary conflict impacts the mind-set of the person throughout his life. Moon is drowned in Pisces, dual natured, uncertain, confused and is great in the astral. Then Cancer is his own sign so double strength Moon energy. And in Scorpio he is debilitated drilling into the watery depths of his mind with catastrophic force. Then the gandant,

  • The person is in the final phase of the Mercury mahadasha, most likely the Saturn sub-period/ chidradasha. The last antardasha phase/chidradasha is a very uncomfortable position, as the mind releases all the unmet expectations and consolidates all the achievements made during the closing Mahadasha and prepares itself for the next planet’s new Mahadasha.
  • This is also the change from one set of 9 Nakshatras to the next set of 9 Nakshatra energies. It is deeply transforming at all levels.
  • It is state of flux on the sub-conscious and emotional levels, and the child has been born in this! The more closer to the junction of the signs the more severe the effect. It can be a very dangerous and traumatic period and under malefic influences can result in severe mental and physical damage.
  • Now after the Mercury Mahadasha starts the Ketu Mahadasha which then is 7 years of Ketu’s apathy, abandonment and indifference related issues as above.
  • Evaluate the positions of Mercury, Ketu, the Moon and the ascendant lord for a detailed picture.

If the rising ascendant sign is in the Mercury owned Nakshatra Gandant, the effects will be seen more on the physical body rather than the mind and the emotions. In such cases, there is a chance of misdiagnosis or incomplete information and Mercury type of medical problems in the early childhood.gandantSome astrologers apply the Gandant concept to all planets, depending on the question being asked. However generally it is used for the birth Moon and the ascendant degree. It is more severe for the birth Moon because it denies the love, protection, nurturing, comfort of a mother. (If the parents deny maternal/paternal love it causes a life time of trauma.)

Ascendant degree gandant creates hidden weaknesses in the body because the birth is at the junction of the watery-fiery signs. These weaknesses may not be visible generally but may suddenly erupt during the transits and dasha periods of the ascendant lord.

If you get a baby’s or young child’s horoscope with these issues, there is a set of pujas to be done to fortify the health, this should be done as early in life as possible. Do analyse the birth chart for longevity in these cases to rule out the possibility of physical death during Mercury’s or Ketu’s Mahadashas. You can also counsel the parents to pay more attention to their child if it is possible. Ensuring that the child gets emotional and physical support, though he may not respond to such loving overtures, will support him deeply in his Ketu period.

Now if you get such charts of adult clients for analysis, it is possible that they may be quite high achieving individuals. But they will have deep seated issues caused by the strange Ketu dominated childhood. These persons will have faced typical issues when they were babies/infants. They might not be consciously aware of the issues but their internal self does. If you feel that the impact is not too severe you can do a simple guided mediation to accelerate the healing process. But if the impact is too severe as seen from the chart, it is best let the client recover himself slowly and gradually through his own spiritual practice. However these charts are quite rare, maybe one out of a 100 will have a significantly Gandant moon or ascendant degree.

Moon gandant however can be quite strangely spiritual, interested in the occult and very aware of the other dimensions, interacting with the other energies quite easily. These persons have been born with a built-in bais against the manifested, right from their birth. They expect detachment from the manifested, and if other planetary placements support, can achieve Moksh.

Ashtapadmadala chakra for transits

I have written a post on how to use this Chakra here for a basic analysis. There is an entire dasha system using this Kaalachakra system too. But for now let’s check out how to use this Chakra for analysing transits. Am using the same example from my previous post, a birth chart which is visualised as a Chakra.

Image 16-02-19 at 8.19 PM

Now you have analysed this basic birth details in the previous post. And you want to find out the results of transits using this system. I always give a 25% weightage to the results of transits and 75% value to the basic birth chart. The main power/potential is from the birth positions and the transits can only modify/activate these. Transits however are quite important to time events. The slowest moving planets Saturn (2.5yrs in a sign), Rahu/Ketu (1.5yrs in a sign) and Jupiter (1yr in a sign) set the tone which is then modified by the faster moving Mars, Venus, Sun and Mercury. Moon transits 1 sign in 2.25days so is not used much to time events except in medical emergencies.

So now you superimpose the transiting planet details in the same chakra. I have used green color to write the transits. This is an imaginary example. (I don’t like using entire charts of actual people, I think analysing actual people like this adversely affects them, they may be alive or dead but still it affects.)

Image 16-02-19 at 11.24 PM

Now look at the new positions of the planetary forces and do a similar basic analysis as you did for their birth positions earlier (not repeating the same points here again!). Now the additional points for transits,

  1. If the benefics are transiting closer to the center of the chart, their energies are more available for you to use. Pay attention to their direction of movement also. If they are moving inwards their energies are supporting your personal development. If their movement is outwards, you are projecting more of their energies on your surroundings and other people.
  2. Malefics transiting in closer to the center of the chakra cause more drain on your self.
  3. And now try to analyse the interaction of the birth planets and the transiting planets. For example,
    • The birth Mars has a transiting Ketu on it. The basic tendency for aggressive fiery behaviour is now enhanced by this ‘headless’ graha’s influence.
    • Venus has entered the innermost stambha boundary, It is favourably placed in a Kendra axis in the birth chakra too. So while he transits this Stambha period his energies will be very high and easily available for you. You will see a growth in resources, balance, beauty, partnerships, gain and spirituality.
    • Mercury is transiting the birth Mercury, in the direction governed by the Energy of destruction, Nirriti. So you will need to be careful of the communication, trade and financial angle in your life.

This transit chakra is very useful especially in medical emergencies. These clients are already worried and tense. So taking time to check this simple chakra is helpful in coming to a more accurate conclusion.

  1. You get a general idea from the basic birth chart.
  2. Then superimpose the running periods, dashas to get a broad framework for the present time.
  3. The add the transits to the basic birth chart.
  4. Now draw the chakra for the birth time and superimpose the transiting planets on it.
    • In this mark the positions of the regular malefics, owners of the dushamsthanas
    • Mark the position of marak planets
    • The closer all these are to the stambha/innermost core the more serious is the emergency.

This is a very tiny exercise to get you interested in using the ‘Chakra’ diagrams too. In astrology there are several chakras which are used. As these are very visual they are rather easy to understand. You can try and use this chakra for more information in addition to the normal superimposed birth and transit positions chart that you draw.

It is possible that some astrology software calculate this ashtapadmadala chakra, but just pay attention to which planet it is using as the base nakshatra. Here we have used the Moon’s nakshatra as the base (position 1). This variant of the Chakra is suitable for all sorts of analysis. Especially if the client is past 49yrs this Moon nakshatra chakra will give the most accurate readings. However you can draw the chakra using the other planets nakshatras, or the ascendant degree nakshatra as a start point, you can even go anti-clockwise, depending on what you want to find out from your planetary forces!

Ashtapadmadala chakra

Image 16-02-19 at 7.12 PM

The grahas and their energies can be mapped geometrically too. The basic chakra/energy geometry used is this Ashtapadmadala chakra. The eight petalled lotus. This is also called the Kaalachakra and there is a whole tantra written on it. However for Jyotish purposes this is how you start, with a simple analysis to understand its basic dynamics.. There are lots of ways of using this Chakra to get layers and layers of information.

The basic layout of the chakra means the following,

  1. The outermost square is called ‘Bhaya’ boundary.
  2. The inner square is called Prakaara boundary.
  3. The innermost square is Durgantar boundary.
  4. The fortress of which the 4 nakshatra positions 4,11,18, 25 are the Stambha boundary.
  5. The central bindu is the Durg. This Durg represents the Point where Devi Mahmaya and Kaalpurush merge into the Ultimate. The Reality of yourself.
  6. The direction lines, East-west, North-south are auspicious Kendra.
  7. The diagonal direction lines North-east/South-west and North-west/South-east are the inauspicious Kona.
  8. The energy of the chart moves as per the arrows marked, following the sequence of the nakshatras. Energies moving inwards are constructive, give gains and are positive. Energies moving outwards are destructive, negative and create losses.
  9. The guardians of the directions are also important, Sun-East, Moon-North, Venus-West and Jupiter-South. Then the diagonals are Rahu-NE, Saturn-NW, Mars-SE and Mercury-SW.

For using this chakra you will need to have a basic understanding of the following

  1. Lunar mansions/Nakshatra (read here). Here for drawing this chart you will use 28 nakshatra including Abhijit.
  2. The Nakshatra occupied by each of the graha/planetary forces in your birth chart. And if which of the planets are retrograde. (When you open your horoscope in any software or panchang, the software will mention it, look for it.)

Now to draw your Ashtapadmadala Chakra for your birth time.

  1. Find out the Nakshatra occupied by Moon in your birth chart, this is to be written at point number (1) and then continue writing the rest of the Nakshatras as per their sequence in the Chakra diagram above. We have chosen the Moon Nakshatra as the “Guard” of the Chakra and the Moon sign will be called the “Ruler” of the Chakra.
  2. Now write the positions of all the other planets and the Ascendant degree too next to the nakshatra which they occupy as per your chart, in the Chakra.

(You can choose the Ascendant sign nakshatra as the start point, if your analysis is more on the physical self and the physical manifested reality. I prefer using the Moon nakshatra for a beginners exercise because Moon in my opinion is a bit more relevant than the ascendant degree, as it controls the filters of your perceptions! You are always more aware of your emotional perceptions than your actual physical reality.)

Suppose your birth time chakra now looks like this,

Image 16-02-19 at 8.19 PM.jpg

Now the interpretation.

  1. Now the Bhaya outermost boundary has Moon, Mars and Mercury. These planets are the face you show to the world. You are perceived by your acquaintances and distant others to be a combined expression of these 3 planetary natures.
  2. The Prakaara boundary has Venus, Sun and Saturn. Your close friends will see you more as a combination of these 3 planetary energies.
  3. The Durgantara boundary has Rahu, Jupiter and Ketu. So the people closest to you know you as a combination of Rahu and Jupiter. (Ketu in this specific birth chakra analysis is considered neutral.)
  4. And finally the Stambha boundary has the ascendant degree itself. You are a highly private person and do not let anyone see the real you so easily!
  5. Planets on the Kendra – Moon, Venus, Ascendant degree. These energies and activities of these planets are positive in outlook, will reinforce the self. Just 3 energies are supportive. But they are the Moon itself and the Ascendant degree, which is good.
  6. Planets on the Kona – Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Sun, Ketu, Rahu. These energies and activities associated with these planets will cause reduction in vitality and stress to the inner core of your self.
  7. Now the energies of the entire chakra move as per the directional arrows so if some planet is retrograde its energy will move in a direction opposite to the general direction. A normally outward moving energy will move towards the inner self and a normally inward moving energy will move outwards towards the environment.
  8. Now the directions, Moon will always be in the East-Indra, it shows the influence of objects, materials, desires on the Moon which are being analysed in detail in this form of the Chakra. The natural planetary ruler of East is the Sun so this chart will show how we perform when our Lunar tendencies are given center-stage. Now in our example, Mars is in SE- Agni Kona. Martian energies added to the fiery corner will cause you to be quite hot-tempered and aggressive. Mercury in the SW-Niritti Kona will encourage you to use your Mercury’s energies in destructive ways causing losses.
  9. You can add another layer to your interpretation by considering the influence of the Nakshatra itself and its Nakshatra Ruler on its resident planet.

For your first brush with this very useful Chakra, I think this much is enough. This Ashtapadmadala Chakra fascinates me, so will write more about in future.

The 27 Lunar Mansions, Nakshatra

A 13deg 20sec division of the zodiac is called a Lunar Mansion or a Nakshatra. As per the stories, Daksha Prajapati had 27 daughters/Nakshatra whom he married off to Chandra/Moon. The Moon takes about 1 day to cross one Nakshatra. snow person girl winterThe Nakshatras are extremely important markers in astrology and some of the ways they are used are as follows.

  1. Each nakshatra has 4 parts/pada and thus there are 108 Nakshatra-pada in the Zodiac. 108 is the Vedic ‘magic’ number. Mantras are chanted 108 times generate high energy which is then channelised to your intention.
  2. Our names are as per the Swar Siddhanta. Each nakshatra-pada has a sound allocated to it. We name our children as per the syllables/Akshara associated with the Moon Nakshatra pada he/she was born in. Though some may use the sound syllable associated with Ascendant or the Sun nakshatra-padas. The tables are widely available on-line.
  3. Matching of bride/groom charts for marriage is primarily done by matching the birth Moon Nakshatra-pada. It is an amazingly accurate system and actually works beautifully. The tables are also quite widely available.
  4. Each Nakshatra has a planetary Lord. The sequence of the planetary owners is Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury which repeats three times, thus each planet owns 3 Nakshatras. The Nakshatra lords of the Moon Nakshatra and the ascendant Nakshatra play important roles in your life.
  5. Each Nakshatra also has an associated Nakshatra Devata. These devatas are correspondingly 27 in number and have a very subtle but deep effect on every aspect of your psychology and spiritual life. In fact if you can remember your Moon’s and Ascendant’s Nakshatra Devatas during your daily puja, it will be quite beneficial.
  6. Our human life-time is calculated as 120 years. These 120 yrs are divided into several parts/Mahadasha, and sub-parts, Antardasha, Pratyantardasha and even tinier units of time, till every second of your life can be mapped. These units of time are owned by the planets. These dashas are used to time events. The birth Moon Nakshatra planetary owner decides start of the Dasha count.
  7. Nakshatras change daily and are one of the 5 parameters in deciding an auspicious time/muhurta, for marriage, buying a house, car, entering a house, starting a business etc (the other 4 are the day, karan, yog and tithi).
  8. Finally the name of the Nakshatra is a mantra in itself. Saying aloud the name of the Nakshatra of the day increases health. (There is a Shani Mahakaal Mryutyunjai stotram a quite powerful stotra where using the nyas mantras, we place the energy of the Nakshtras, yogas, karanas, days, months, planets, rashis, years and all the units of time in various body parts of the body. I utterly love Shani so have done this several times just for his happiness.)

pexels-photo-207762.jpegHow do you find out your ascendant’s and Moon’s Nakshatras? In any Vedic/Indian horoscope it will be clearly marked out and modern software also clearly mention them. So do check these out.

In Vedic astrology, a complete reading of the chart will consider the birth Moon’s nakshatra. We consider the Moon to be paramount as he controls the mind, emotions and perceptions. Whatever happens to us is perceived and experienced through the Moon, the emotional filter of life. The Moon works through the 27 Nakshatra ‘filters’, these are not rational or logical, but intuitive, psychological and subtle. These are the linkages of your past lives and the framework of your present life. The life choices that you make in this life are linked to your birth Moon Nakshatra and to some extent to your birth Ascendant Nakshatra. If you live a more materialistic life with no spiritual back-up, you will not be aware of these signals. You might feel a general guidance but you will not be able to actively interact with your Nakshatra energies. Thus for an average human the Nakshatras will fix the your fate. But if you tend to be spiritually inclined and have a sense of the grander purpose of your life, you can actively use the energies of your Nakshatras, their lords and devatas.adorable beautiful child cuteIf you observe yourself carefully you can reduce all your life’s activities to one or two action words. These action words are a reflection of your Nakshatra energies. The Moon rules the enormity of the astral, the sub-conscious, so it makes sense to divide his humongous domain into the 27 sub-domains of the Nakshatras. I have tried to reduce the natures of these 27 into small keywords which perhaps maybe will be useful. These describe the innermost tendencies and desires. Often your client will not even be aware of them but they will rule his life and influence his every action.

Sr. Name Ruler Devata Keywords
1 Asvini Ketu Ashwini twins Healer, observer, innovator,
2 Bharani Venus Yama Hoarder, carries, is restrained, in-control

There is one more Nakshatra, ‘Abhijit’, this is a masculine nakshatra, ruled by Brahma the Creator himself and reflects the creative principle of Divinity. This is not used for general astrological analysis but in special calculations e.g. in drawing the ashtapadmadala chakra. When it is used, it is inserted at serial number 22, with each the following nakshatra shifting one serial number ahead to give a total of 28 nakshatras.

Abhijit rules over the 28 minutes before and after midday and also 28 minutes before and after midnight. This is called the Abhijit muhurta and is considered quite auspicious.

pexels-photo-265959.jpegFor example Chitra, the shining jewel of the zodiac, owned by Mars. Such a person will internally want to compete with and outshine others. His devata is Vishwakarma/Tvashtra, the celestial architect, he will want to build, create works of beauty, it may be expressed as a book, or a building or the systematic arrangement of his room. But the beauty will have a purpose, power and danger too. He will be continually rearranging his mental and emotional processes till he is satisfied by its beauty and power. He is wedded to his work. This nakshatra is most likely to remain unmarried or if married not too involved with his spouse (preferring a silent submissive spouse in fact!). He finds his fulfilment when he creates beauty coupled with power.

Another example Uttara Bhadrapada: Ruled by the serpent of the deep unconscious, Ahirbudhnya Ouroboros. The Saturn has an agenda of structured work in the astral realms. The native knows a lot, but in the astral, of the astral. He consumes his manifested vitality and lives it out in the sub-conscious states. These individuals seem hazy, spaced out, but in the astral they are kings. They have the capacity to do anything in the astral. Beware of making enemies of these seemingly ‘drugged’ individuals, they wont even know what they can do to retaliate in return. One client had after the death of his enemy, tracked his soul on his way to the Pitrulok and trapped him in a bubble, so that he could never reach there, nor take another birth, presumably still trapped there. (Guided meditaion sometimes gives such stranger than fiction pasts!)

It is beyond my scope to write in detail on each individual nakshatra in this limited blog post, however will try to in my future posts. Just this tiny post to remind that Nakshatras are very important and in Vedic system you have to consider 2 nakshatras, the birth moon’s nakshatra and the rising ascendant nakshatra, else your analysis is incomplete.
