The toughest Vimshottari Antardasha

Vimshottari dasha system is the most common one which all students of Jyotish learn. In this, the format is a main-period/Mahadasha, sub-period/antar-dasha and further sub-sub periods, a total of 5 levels. The tone of this main-period is further modulated by the subsequent sub-sub periods. This covers the 120yrs of a human life. The Maha-Dashas are Ketu Mahadasha is 7years, Venus mahadasha is the longest at 20 Years, Sun Mahadasha is 6 Years, Moon Mahadasha is 10 Years, Mars Mahadasha is 7 Years, Rahu Mahadasha is 18 Years, Jupiter Mahadasha is 16 Years, Saturn Mahadasha is 19 Years and Mercury Mahadasha is 17 Years.

The important thing in analysing the Vimshottari is analysing the power and the nature of the Mahadasha MD ruler and the Antardasha AD ruler and the interaction between them. (If you are experienced enough you can attempt adding the rulers of the sub-sub periods etc to this analysis too.)

So open your vedic software, input your birth data and check what planet’s MD and which planet’s AD you are in at the present moment. We have to now analyse the relationship between these two planets to get a sense of how this sub-period will be like.

This is our example chart, Aleister Crowley the famous occultist and creator of the Thoth tarot deck, birth details, 12th Oct 1875, 11:43 pm Leamington UK. Suppose Crowley was in Jupiter MD and Rahu AD ie ‘Jupiter-Rahu’ period. Now analyse the birth chart, Cancer ascendant so Jupiter is a functional malefic (he owns the 6th and 9th houses and his mooltrikon sign Sagittarius lies in the 6th house, maha-dusham-sthan). Rahu is a functional malefic for all ascendants.

Birth chart Aliester Crowley

Analysing further. Jupiter is the owner of the 6th house, ie his mool trikon sign lies in the 6th house so he will bring in all the keywords of the 6th house into focus during this period. Ie debts, disease, enemies, arguments, imbalances of all sorts, all one-one relationships will break down, business relationships will also show the strain, spiritual practice will be affected. There will be stress, tension as Jupiter’s expansive abilities will expand the 6th house’s ‘serve or suffer’ motif. He owns the 9th house too, but this is just his own sign not his mooltrikon sign. So there will be some positives with some negatives. He will make Crowley dogmatic, rigid in his opinions, he will not be able to appreciate the others point of view, his teachers, professors, even people whom he considers his spiritual teachers can misguide him. For Cancer ascendant Jupiter cannot give beneficial results outrightly as he owns the 6th house. Some good results from the 9th house can be expected but these will be tainted by Jupiter’s ownership of the 6th house. Jupiter himself occupying the 4th house, Libra, with Mars and Venus. Thus his comfort levels are just average. So the Jupiter MD will not give overall very pleasing results. There will be some high points as the 9th house keywords give some benefits but the 6th house ownership over-shadows it all.

In this we have the Rahu AD, ie the Jupiter-Rahu period. Rahu is occupying the 9th house and with the Moon in Pisces. Any graha in the 9th house is capable of giving good results. Rahu is influenced by Moon and Jupiter. Of these Jupiter is the functional malefic. And Moon as ascendant lord is a benefic. But here we must consider that the Moon-Jupiter in the Shakata yog, 6/8 axis. So Moon and Jupiter are not comfortable with each other, which affects Rahu’s ability to give good results too. So Rahu gains more power to do mischief. And the keywords he will damage are related to the 9th house, Moon and Jupiter. So we cannot expect much good from Rahu during the periods he controls.

Then Jupiter and Rahu are mutually in the 6/8 axis. This is the most traumatic axis for two planets to be in as their energies are sucked up in the vortex of karmic suffering/ catastrophic changes. Both are highly uncomfortable with each other and cannot cooperate to give auspicious results on the physical planes.

So overall this Jupiter-Rahu period would have been difficult for Crowley. (This was a basic analysis, you can add more pointers from the Ashtakvarga charts, the shad-bala values, the navamsha, their nakshtra etc depending on your level of study/experience)

Remedies for combust planets

Now come back to your horoscope,

Check which planets are placed in the 6/8 axis. The MD and AD of these two planets will be the most traumatic ones in your life. Eg if Jupiter and Saturn are placed in the 6/8 axis in your birth chart then Jupiter-Saturn and Saturn-Jupiter periods will cause trouble. Or if Venus and Saturn are placed in the 6/8 axis in your birth chart both the Venus-Saturn and Saturn-Venus periods will be traumatic.

Find out which are the functional malefics in your chart. And if they are adequately supported by benefics or made even worse by aspects from other malefics? Periods ruled by the functional malefics are invariably stressful. Eg in our example horoscope, Cancer ascendant, so Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Rahu and Ketu related periods have potential for causing trouble. Eg Now if a Cancer ascendant person is in a MD or AD of these planets then he will definitely face some issues in life during this period. Eg Jupiter-Saturn, Saturn-Jupiter, Jupiter-Mercury, Mercury-Saturn, Saturn-Mercury, Rahu-Jupiter etc all combinations of these planets sub-periods will give stress. The exact source of this stress will be the energies of the houses they own, the houses they are placed in and the houses which they aspect.

Next if the MD and AD ruling functional malefic planets themselves are placed in the dushamsthan. Ordinarily the logic is that malefics in dushamsthan in the birth chart are a good thing. Use a thorn to remove a thorn concept (vipreet raj yog). But a problem arises when the same planet controls two houses, one dushamsthan and one auspicious. In our eg, it is Cancer ascendant, Jupiter controls the 6th dusham and 9th Kona, the Dharmasthan. Or Saturn controls 7th, a kendra house and 8th, a dusham. Here if the malefic planet is placed in a dusham sthan or not supported by benefics then the other auspicious house owned by him also suffers. Eg If in our example, if Saturn were placed in the 12th house, he would reduce the intensity of the 8th house issues but also reduce the auspiciousness of the marriage, partnerships, intimacy, finances, spiritual practice etc. Or if Jupiter is powerless it will reduce the karmic burdens of the 6th house but also reduce the auspiciousness of the 9th house, so the blessings from the ancestors, guidance from teachers, real Learning, progeny, auspicious benefits from past lives, sense of the divine, in fact every aspect of the current life will be affected by ill-luck. This effect on the other auspicious house can be alleviated if this house is occupied or strongly aspected by a benefic. But if this other auspicious house is even more adversely affected by malefic influences then it will be worse.

Finally check the current transit of the MD and AD planets in the skies. If these are transiting through crucial houses of the chart they will have severe impact on you. eg in our example, Crowley is going through Jupiter-Rahu, right now Jupiter is in Capricorn and debilitated (his movement is very weird this year). Rahu is wrecking havoc in Gemini. One eclipse was in Dec 2019 another is due in Jun2020. So Rahu is in his element, causing mischief. So Crowley if he were alive now, he would really have had a bad time just from these two planets activities. And at the last, superimpose the current transits on the birth chart to get an overview on what houses are under stress and which ones can give good results. For Crowley, Saturn and Mars are in Capricorn currently, so a big boost of energy which can be used for growth but he will take his toll on the physical body. ie Saturn return. Sun in Aries is favourable for profession related activities (though he is in the 6/8 axis from the birth Sun) etc and so on.

I hope you use this post to find out the challenging periods in your life and be more prepared to face them. In such potentially adverse periods it is better to remain alert about your thoughts, words and actions. Especially if the karmic heavyweights like Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are involved or planets who control the longer Vimshottari dashas are involved, as actions taken here can have long lasting impacts.

Retrograde and combust planets are unfair?

Sometimes Malefic planets help you

The houses 6th, 8th and 12th are called the dushamsthana or the houses of turmoil. The 6th is the house where you ‘serve or suffer’. The 8th is the house of catastrophic transformations and the 12th is the house of loss of the manifested. Even the 3rd house is a potentially problematic house under the shadows, if not balanced by benefic forces it can give very strange results! Then of the 9 planets of vedic astrology, 5 planets, Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are by nature cruel/ malefic. So one might feel that the ratio of benefic/malefic forces in the chart tilts more towards the malefic!

Sometimes Malefic planets help you

But there are special combinations/Yog where the malefic planets can actually give positive results, more than the traditional benefic planets. This is a form of reversal where technically cruel planets give very favourable results. One example I have written about here is the Yogkarak planets. In such reversal of results, often there is a trend, where initially you suffer due to some reasons and then suddenly something gets triggered and there is a reversal of fortunes and you rise spectacularly because of the very same reasons. This trigger can be the maturity of the planets involved or a planetary period /Dasha.

Now a bit about the houses of turmoil and how interactions between these houses and their owner planets can propel your chart to heights. (There should be no other planets placed with these owners of turmoil in the same house, if so then this yog fails to give its positive results.) So,

  1. When just these planets are placed in the 3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th houses in the birth chart. Or weakened by mutual interaction, or debilitated etc (this either in the birth chart D-1 or the 9th divisional chart/navamsha D-9)
    • Here their power to give negative results is reduced. Negative forces destroying other negative forces!
    • When the planetary forces of turmoil interact with each other, they end up damaging each other thus reducing their propensity to give negative results. The chart as a whole will benefit.
    • This is seen practically as enemies, diseases, debtors and other evil influences in life are blocked. Enemies fall and you rise, often spectacularly.
  2. Or they are very strong and placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th and 9th (kendra) houses or the 5th or 9th (kona) houses.
    • In such a case, you may not rise in life yourself but you will gain through the rise of your friends and well-wishers.
  3. If they are placed in the Kendra/Kona and linked (aspect or conjunct) to the ascendant lord. In this case they sort of transfer their powers to the Ascendant lord and the chart gains.
    • In this case you rise yourself thus gain.

If the lord of the 6th is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th, then you can expect to win over your enemies, stay out of debt and to be blessed by good health. Also will have luck on your side, professionally and a good reputation on the social and monetary front.

If the lord of the 8th is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th, you will be bold and face the challenges in your life with a lot of confidence and strength. You will embrace change and flow with the transformational energies in your life. Good decision making abilities and an ability to focus on important information will ensure that you will never shirk from the conflicts in life.

The lord of the 12th house placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th will grant a happy and independent personality. You will always look for opportunities and avenues, even in a potentially bad situation, you can find ways to make it favourable for you. You will have a good professional life with wealth and social reputation.

(This rule is not applicable to Mars and Venus when as ascendant lord, they also own a dushamsthana. This happens only in these, for Aries ascendant, Scorpio is 8th, for Taurus ascendant Libra is 6th for Libra ascendant Taurus is 2nd and for Scorpio ascendant Aries is 6th house.)

Some people thrive on challenges, they seem to take on challenges and convert them into opportunities. Difficulties come but they give results exactly opposite to what is generally expected. They are ultimately beneficial and favourable to the person. These are reversals so for these situations are always linked to the downfall of the agents represented by the 6th, 8th and 12th houses. So you have to be alert and make the most of the opportunity which will most likely come suddenly. Remove a thorn with a thorn always works here. And finally, if the powers of the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th are reversed in this way they give material benefits of all sorts but practically nil spiritual benefits. Btw, what is favourable and unfavourable is ultimately decided by our lens of perception, our mind i.e. the position of our birth Moon. A superbly placed Moon is worth a hundred ‘yog’/planetary combinations!

Sometimes Malefic planets help you

(These combinations are referred to as the Vipreet Rajyog in Jyotish. But rather than being put off by complicated names, it is always more helpful to understand the logic. Jyotish is mathematics, not superstition and learning by rote!)

Oils for massage and other remedies

Oil of any kind is primarily linked to Saturn, and specifically sesame/til oil is the heathiest one for your body is and the specific ‘item’ of Shani. Now let’s check out some more in the remedies, very simple ones, more acceptable for the general public, So no mantra, yantra, tantra based stuff for now (I have written about these in my past several posts if you are interested).

So check out in your horoscope which planets are placed as follows

  1. Benefic planets if placed in the dushamsthan 6th, 8th or  12th house
  2. Malefic planets in the Kendra 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th houses or the Kona 5th or 9th houses.

If you have any planets like this it is possible that they are adversely affecting your life, so let’s balance out these energies by charity and intention. Giving away items associated with their energies may prove beneficial. The concept is that you owe a debt from your past life which you are paying off now. Do it with a clear heart and intention of karma balance.

Oils for massage and other remedies

The Sun – If your Sun is under stress or the 5th house of your chart is damaged, this means some inauspicious acts in your past life have put your personality/self-ego under stress. You may have violated ancient traditions that ruined your self-respect. This can manifest as struggles, legal problems, court cases, being accused for no reason etc. One solution is to perform any religious ritual prescribed by your faith. (Hindus can do a Satyanaryan puja). If you can get your close relatives to participate in this ritual it would be even better. Items associated with the Sun, which you can give away are saffron/kesar, wheat, copper, brown colored sugar or jaggery, red cloth, red flowers, red sandalwood.

Moon – If the Moon is badly placed or if the 4th house of your chart is under malefic influences, especially Ketu’s influence. In some past life you may have hurt your mother, perhaps thrown her out of your house. This may manifest as financial losses, diseases and debts with disproportionate mental stress. One solution is to put a silver coin in running water or the sea. If you can get your close relatives to touch this coin before you toss it, it will be even better. Items linked to the moon are white sandalwood, rice, milk, silver, sugar specifically misri/khadisakkar, white cloth, white flowers, camphor which can be given as Daana.

Mars – If your Mars is afflicted or your 1st house or 8th house is under the influence of malefics, especially Ketu, you owe your relatives something. You may have harmed your relatives in some way in your past lives. You may face unexplainable trouble and losses around your 28th year. If this is so the best solution would be to collect money from your family members, maybe an equal contribution from your close relatives and donate this money in a mutually agreed temple. Items you can donate to balance Mars’ energies are copper, masoor grains (red lentil, Lens culinaris), wheat, sauf/badisheb/fennel seeds, red cloth, red flowers, red sandalwood.

Mercury – If in your chart, the Mercury or your 3rd house or 6th house is under stress you have done some wrong to a sister or girl in your past life. So in this life you tend to have a lot of problems, losses in money, psychiatric issues, and no help forthcoming. The best solution is rather typical, take a few sea shells (yellow colored are best), burn them and put the ash in flowing water. If you can get your close relatives to touch the shells before you do this, it will give better results. Items resonating with his energies are green cloth, green gram/Moong grains (Vigna radiata), camphor, turpentine oil which can be donated in Nav-graha temples.

Oils for massage and other remedies

Jupiter – If the Jupiter in your chart or the 9th or 12th house is afflicted with malefics, especially Rahu, it is considered as a debt owed to the father. This may manifest as loss of saved money in the old age. The solution is to plant a peepal (Ficus religiosa) tree and take care of it so that it survives or do some seva/help out at your local temple. Jupiter linked items for donation/Daana are turmeric, jaggery or brown colored sugar, yellow flowers, yellow cloth, yellow sweets.

Venus – If the Venus or the 2nd or 7th house in your chart is under stress, it indicates a debt owed to a wife from a past life, maybe you tortured her. In this life this may manifest as grief and obstacles in performing religious and auspicious rituals. The easiest solution is to feed a white colored cow. Cow means a desi cow with a prominent hump. Such a cow has tremendous aura and she can give you blessings. Feeding her or even touching her will increase the power of your own aura. Venus linked items are ghee, camphor, curd, rice, white cloth, white flowers which you can give away as Daana.

Saturn – If your Saturn is giving bad results or if the 10th or 11th house of the chart is damaged this indicates that you cheated someone or tortured a helpless person in some life. The good option to create positive karma is to offer food to a few people who work as labourers. Items linked to Saturn which can be given away are black gram/urad grains, black cloth, (feeding a chapati/bread to ravens also works. Ravens are the link between the other dimension Pitra-lok and our Martya-lok. If by chance you owe your ancestors they can be satisfied by this act).

Rahu – If the 12th house is under stress this also indicates a type of ancestral debt where maybe a baby was aborted before birth. Imprisonment, betrayal, physical injury etc can be the results. Things which can be given away are yellow mustard grains, mustard oil, mixed seven types of grains, lead, blanket. Another option is to get a coconut, get every one in your close family to touch it and put it in flowing water/sea.

Ketu – If the 6th house is under stress this indicates that you have gone against your Dharma conscience, against ‘God’ in some terrible way. In this life this manifests as being childless, diseased, haunted, losses in every way. You can feed a multicolored dog (this is a remedy from the Lal kitab or Arun samhita, and for some reason it does work) or donate sesame/til grains, blanket, lead, saffron/kesar, any seven types of grains mixed together in a Nav-graha temple.

You might find this a bit strange, but these very simple remedies work. A fistful of grain or a few drops of oil or a piece of cloth! The planets are linked some way to these things. So if you have a Navgraha temple near where you live you can offer any of these items to the planet moorthi installed there. The second option is to offer the item in flowing water/river or the sea. Donating them to genuine brahmins is also possible, but you may not find anyone who really deserves charity and these are rather typical items. So the best option is a temple or flowing water/sea. If you are facing exceptional problems and the planet is giving severely bad results then these items can be buried in the ground, but make sure that you do it in some lonely place. (Some of these are from the Arun samhita/ Lal kitab)

(When to give the Daana? refer to this post)

In Sanatan Dharm/Hinduism, everyone owes 3 types of debts. First is to the parents/ancestors, because they give us birth and take care of us. Next is to the society because it shelters us and offers us opportunities to live a fuller life. And finally to the Guru because he shows us the path to liberation and helps us find our real self. And these have to be repaid. The first one is repaid when we do our Dharma of taking care of our parents as per our conscience and by having good children to carry on the family. The second one is when we contribute positively to the society by helping others either by doing charity (if you can afford it), and being kind/helpful to others around you. And the third one is very cryptic, you don’t have to pay anything here. You repay the debt you owe your Guru when you practice what he has shown you and you finally gain your objective.

Can Benefics act as malefics?

Each planet represents an aspect of your life. But ‘Life’ itself is a very complicated thing to define! What should I consider to be my ‘Life’, my physical material life, my emotional psychological life, my internal spiritual life or is it anything else beyond these?

Can Benefics act as malefics?

We take birth to experience Everything, which concludes in the ultimate experience of our own Real Self. Every action that we have chosen in our horoscope finally leads us to this. Every joy, disappointment, every physical manifestation and every spiritual act is a step in this direction. So from a spiritual point of view there is nothing called ‘malefic’ or ‘benefic’. These terms are used only in reference to the physical material life.

“My Saturn is badly placed, so will he give me ‘bad results’ throughout his Mahadasha?”

A very valid question this, but it defeats the very purpose of Jyotish. This is the science of illumination, there is no room for superstition, self-doubt and self-criticisms here. If you fear your planetary positions you have missed the point of Jyotish enquiry.

We call planets ‘malefics‘ and houses as ‘dushamsthana‘. But you should understand that these terms mean that the activities indicated by this house/planet are going to cause you pain. The Karma associated with them is the negative sort. You are going to be made to work hard to restore your karmic balance. All the houses and planets are of use, have a purpose and are ultimately beneficial in the spiritual sense.

Your entire chart is active and influences you throughout your life. But the intensity of influence of the different planets varies at specific periods. The intensity is more during..

  1. The mahadasha of the planet. And specially during the first /swa-antardasha and the last chida-antardasha.
  2. And the transits which have to be analysed in details for every planet. All transits are important. Saturn sets the tone with 2.6yrs in one sign, then Rahu/Ketu with 1.6 yrs in one sign. Then Jupiter with 1 year per sign. Mars, Venus and Mercury stay in each sign for 2-3 months, Sun for 1 month and Moon for 2.25days.

Now everyone is scared of Shani because he makes you work hard, without rest, constricts resources, delays arrival of new things, causes emotional and physical stress, delays benefits, ensures discipline and is very strict. But he is fair. Use up what you have, only then will he allocate more resources. Not a penny more not a penny less. Shani’s gift to you is a fast-track to karma rebalance.

But if you want to be scared of the planets, why stop at just Saturn. All planets have their other faces which make their lessons tests of endurance in my opinion even worse than Saturn’s. Yes and these are ‘benefics’ too!

Do you know what Venus can do, if he really puts on his bad boy face? Destroy your relationships with others which will subtly impact your own relationship with yourself. You may have all the luxuries in the world but if you do not feel good about yourself, do not love yourself, your life is a subtle torture. If my wife whom I love very very deeply with my soul, always throws back the gifts I get for her, in my next life I will end up with something like Venus Ketu. Can you even imagine how it is to be detached from all relationships including the one you have with yourself?

Jupiter breaking bad? Is this even possible? Yes. I have seen one chart where the Jupiter + Moon in the 12th house contributed to her death by internal haemorrhage, destroyed her physical body in the space of 1 week. Jupiter is the agent of expansion, but if he expands the wrong things it is a problem. Jupiter in the 6th, 8th, 12th houses will expand enemies, debts, servitude, diseases, arguments, accidents, surgeries, traumas, catastrophic changes, tantrik activities, even attract early physical death, destroy your physical stuff and thus pull you towards the astral. Jupiter can also confer pomposity, rigid religious views and even fanatically extreme philosophical ideas if he wants.

The pearly opalescent Moon? The agent of emotions, mind, comforts and astral self. If Moon decides to become a hard-taskmaster, he will literally pull the rug from under your feet. Your mother will be your jailer, those who are supposed to be your caregivers will be your enemies. You will get zero sense of comfort, no emotional support and sense of security. You may have been a great tantrik earlier, but in this life even tiny entities will trouble you. You will not have access to your own astral potential. Moon in 6th and your emotions become your enemies, a disease and a debt. A life of internal loneliness!

Can Benefics act as malefics?

Mercury if turns ‘bad’ can distort your thinking machinery and your confidence. You are what you think you are. In your spiritual progress you need to have a razor-sharp intellect because there will be so many tests on your way. In normal life too, Mercury can create psychological problems from anxiety to depression to generic sadness, even insanity and pessimism. Just because his effects on the intellect are not as visible as Shani’s effects on the body does not mean that they are any less damaging. A faulty thinking process can ruin everything from personal relationships to business to profession and will trap you in very difficult situations.

And the Sun? It can turn into a scorching ball of Ego. So shiny that you are unaware of others around you. Selfish and self-referential you then hurt people around you. Since this is the Sun, you will end up neglecting a large chunk of ‘subjects’, maybe a large group of population, or members of a large family, or workers in a factory etc, people who are dependent on you. For your own personal glory you will put these many in pain. Then this becomes a huge backlog of karma which will be re-balanced in your next lives, you will be denied creativity and access to divine inspiration till you make up to all those you owe to. Imagine Sun in the 12th house, cut off from all support of the self-ego, blankness, no support from father neither from the divine intelligence and no real creativity in the physical world.

Mars is a bad boy everyone knows that, aggressive and belligerent. But his other face where he will deny his energies is equally bad, he can then sap your vitality and drain the pran/vital energies moving around in your body. If the drain is slow there will be illness, but if he does this fast enough then rapid death can be one of the results! Or on the other hand he can cause uncontrolled movements of energy in the naadis leading to those typical ‘stroke’ problems. And finally if he decides he can make you choose a low energy route when you leave your physical body and you will be stuck with a low energy body in your next life too.

Rahu is a malefic no doubt about that. Showing you attractive visions, even taking you upto them and then bringing you down with a crash. Rahu is the reason we desire. Now if you have a Rahu+Moon with no other planet to modify this result. Eternal craving for emotional satisfaction, with fulfilment perpetually denied. You will see it coming but at the edge of satisfaction, it will be denied. And Rahu/Ketu mature at the age of 48yrs. So this person will attain emotional maturity at 48yrs when more than half his life has gone by and his habits are set. A very huge challenge!

Ketu is the reason we detach from everything. He is super for a spiritual outlook but terrible for the physical life. Imagine Ketu with the ascendant lord with no other planets to help out. Cut off from the sense of self, no expressions, no real understanding of the own self, no head! for life. For such a person the only possible option is taking sanyas and questing for the spiritual, because he will never be able to relate to his own personality and neither to his environment ever!

Extreme results occur only with combinations of planets, one single placement can never never be used for predictions. Before scaring yourself with incomplete analysis, go over the chart again with a fresh mind. If you then again see any huge problems take corrective actions, using mantras, regular spiritual practice etc.

Every placement has been chosen by yourself at the moment of your birth. You chose your chart. Your chart does not control you, it is the energy diagram of your karmic balance. You have come here to work off your karmic baggage, some tasks are easy and you complete them in a jiffy, but some require hard work and strain your body and mind. Never fear a house/planet! These are all different facets of your own self. If you say your Saturn is bad, or your Jupiter is not giving benefic results, you are saying your own efforts to resolve karma are not giving results. You are invalidating a part of your own self.

Your current life is not stand-alone one-off thing. It is just one episode in a long-running TV serial show. Accept the teachings that you are being given in your this sojourn on earth. You are the reason why things happen to you.

Can Benefics act as malefics?

{This post is in response to this, “Malefic planets give bad results, but I cannot understand, how can a benefic planet can give bad result?” I received in the Comment form, I hope it has been of some use.}

Malefic energies in your chart

In a horoscope analysis, the most important planetary force is the Ascendant Lord, followed by the Moon. If your these 2 forces are well placed and are capable of giving good results the basics of your life are secured. Now here is a checklist of the Arishta/malefic influences in your chart. You will need to see this list in the context of your horoscope. Every planet has the capacity to give malefic results depending on several factors.

Malefic energies in your chart

First to begin with, the planets,

  1. The natural malefics are Mars, Sun, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. (Jupiter, Venus, well placed Moon and well placed Mercury are benefics)
  2. Moon if weak, debilitated, under the influence of malefics or placed very near the Sun will act as a malefic.
  3. Mercury if weak, debilitated or under influence of the malefic planets will act as a malefic.
  4. Benefics Jupiter, Venus, Moon and Mercury can become ineffective if they are retrograde. If retrograde and under the influence of malefics they can even give malefic results.
  5. The essential malefic/benefic nature of these planets will be modified depending on the houses that they own in the chart, so will vary as per the ascendant sign. So take note of this modification in their natures too!

The houses and their owners,

  1. The dushamshthanas, 6th, 8th and 12th are sources of malefic influences. Even a benefic placed here will give malefic results. Worse will be if you have the Moon or Ascendant owner placed here.
  2. The placement of the owners of the dushamsthanas should be analysed. These ‘house owners’ may be benefic/malefic by their essential nature, but for this chart they are karaks/agents of turmoil so you need to pay attention to which house they are placed in.

The agents of death, the Marak and Marakesh,

  1. The 2nd house and the 7th house are called the Marak sthan, these houses are linked to timing of physical death. Presence of malefics in these houses at birth needs to be checked. Especially should remain alert during transits of malefics through these houses.
  2. The house owners of these 2nd and 7th houses are called the Marakesh, they decide the timing of death. Especially be careful during Mahadasha and sub-periods of these planets and their transits. Even simple illness during this period can act as the ‘seed’ for physical death.

Additionally the chart draws strength from these positions,

  1. The houses 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th are called the foundations of the horoscope/Kendra. If benefics are placed here they provide strength and vitality which can tide over malefic influences.
  2. The 3rd house is the ‘house of house’ for the 8th house. It is the ‘death’ of ‘death’. So even if you have malefic planets placed here they add to your strength. This house represents your confidence and inner boldness so any planet performs well here.
  3. The 11th house is the Bhavat-bhavam for the 6th house, it is the ‘enemy’ of the ‘enemy’. Any planet, benefic/malefic, performs well here. It represents your gains and adds to your strength.

Now the timing. – Now that you know which planets are the malefic energies of your chart, you will need to pay special attention to their dasha periods and transits. If you get a chart with questions you will need to do this part of the analysis.

  1. First check what sort of a problem it is. Which houses are linked to it, there are a few limited categories of problems. You can easily check which house and which planet related issues these are.
    • For medical emergencies
    • For marriage problems
    • For business, profession and finance related problems
    • Land and property
    • Issues with children
    • Education related questions
  2. Now see which Mahadasha and sub-periods are on. If they are of some malefic planets take notes.
  3. Then the current transits and how these planets in transit are interacting with the birth planetary positions related to the question that is being asked.
    • e.g. for medical emergency, you see that the it is the 7th house Lord/Marakesh Mahadasha with Ketu antardasha which can cause illnesses and even physical death. If in this, you see Saturn transiting the Ascendant sign. And in this, if Mars transits the 8th and Moon comes in the 8th for its 2.25days transit. Accident will happen. If Jupiter is transiting the 12th it can lead to death even. But if Jupiter is in the kendra house it can save the life.

Analysing malefic influences is a distasteful but essential part of any horoscope analysis you do. After all no one comes to you for asking ‘why am I doing good’! You will always get clients with problems, so with time this analysis becomes automatic.
