The intensely karmic Vimshottari Antardashas

There was a question on which is the worst dasha period in life. I would not use the word ‘worst’. Some events may seem unfavourable on the material planes, but they ultimately do help as they help in rebalancing your pending karma or grant you disillusionment from the Game of Creation or pull your more strongly towards your own Reality/Advaita. Perspectives.

But to answer the question, considering the Vimshottari system. I would choose the following mahadasha (MD) and sub-period antardasha (AD). These six antardasha periods in life have to be navigated carefully.

  • Venus mahadasha Saturn antradasha (written as Venus-Saturn) Or Saturn mahadasha Venus antardasha is the worst possible combination for the antardasha. These two periods will give everyone a karmic kick in the.. .
  • Saturn mahadasha Jupiter antardasha Or Jupiter mahadasha Saturn antardasha. These two are not so bad as the ones above, but yes they represent a very complex mix of karma which has to be endured.
  • And then would be the Venus mahadasha Jupiter antardasha or Jupiter mahadasha Venus antardasha. Both Gurus, one Dev-Guru and the other Daitya-Guru and there are very complex things happening during the periods controlled by them together.

The most intensely karmic Antardasha periods

So first, the Venus-Saturn antardasha and the Saturn-Venus antardasha. You will go through somewhat similar experiences in both of these sub-periods.

If anyone around you is going through these antar-dasha periods do observe them. If you are in these sub-periods, then be aware. These periods can have such terrific negative karma packed in that life turns into one confusing roller-coaster of bewildering issues, which seem to have no head or tail. You are put into fruitless arguments and issues. You know that there is no point, yet you argue, fight and get into conflicts. Intellectually you know that what you are doing or saying or thinking has to real sense, no real relevance but yet you put yourself through the grinder. This is the most intense karmic burst and both these periods are significantly long, go on for years. By the time you come out of these sub-periods, you are a completely different person. If you are lucky then these karma will be on the emotional levels, so you will suffer grief, anxiety, worry etc the astral body will suffer, but the physical situations will remain by and large ok. But if these planets also control important physical houses of your chart then in addition to the mental stress, you will suffer losses and reverses in life, health, wealth, social status, job, relationships are all affected in a very real way. And it can get very intense, there might be strange diseases, loss of job, breaks in education, financial problems, riches to rags type of situations.

Venus is the toughest, the highest Guru with the most cryptic tests, he rules one-one relationships, equitable binding contracts, partnerships, luxuries, wealth, treasuries, love, spiritual practice, refinement, Moksha. The other face of these qualities is degradation, immorality, deviation in the moral compass and entanglement in even more karma. Venus is the natural Marak of the zodiac, he decides when this current life should be terminated. And also when should the illusion of Maya be terminated, ie when should Moksh be granted.

Saturn ensures that you repay your karmic pendency in the most disciplined manner, he is very strict about it. He will not tolerate laziness, cheating, immaturity, non-responsibility. Saturn will rip off the illusions around you, if you feel that your friend is really your friend wait till a Saturn period comes along and see if he sticks with you. Saturn will bring reality before you in the most direct, unemotional manner possible. He makes you ‘grow up’ whether you like it or not.

Venus and Saturn are friends yet they can wreck havoc together. So when a combined period of Saturn-Venus or Venus-Saturn begins know that you are going to be taught the lesson of karma so thoroughly that you will be disillusioned with the material stuff you see around you. If your horoscope is powerful enough you will move strongly towards the inner spiritual but if not then you will suffer.

You will face the most intense karmic rebalancing with the one you love the most. This is the most traumatic aspect of these two sub-periods. The one you love the most, the one whom you know loves you the most, you rely on him/her the most, he/she relies on you the most, but his/her overt love/support can be denied to you, your overt love/support will be denied to him/her in these two sub-periods.

The negative effects are reduced if your ascendant is Taurus or Libra as Venus is the ascendant lord and Saturn is the Yogkarak. Or if your ascendant is Capricorn or Aquarius where Saturn is the ascendant lord. Or if Venus and Saturn both are capable of giving auspicious results together. But this does not mean that you escape the trouble! It simply means that the turmoil you face finally makes sense and you are given some significant gain eventually.

The most intensely karmic Antardasha periods

Now the Jupiter and Saturn periods together. Jupiter-Saturn antardasha or the Saturn-Jupiter antardasha.

Here the logic is quite clear, one is the lord of expansion the other is the lord of contraction! When equal and opposite forces are forced to work together in one time period there is going to be intense confusion.

In this period you will face another burst of karma. Saturn makes you work. Jupiter hopeful and benevolent, expands anything he touches! So you will face strange contradictions as work increases, stress increases, emotions are suppressed etc. All of Saturn’s qualities can be expanded by Jupiter’s influence. And Jupiter’s qualities can be restricted by Saturn’s activities. Some astrologers believe that Jupiter can tone down Saturn’s influence, which is true in some cases, but the other side is that Saturn affects Jupiter’s beneficial influence too! Do analyse what these two planets signify in your chart and how strong your chart is in the first place. There might be problems in the profession and social status. Education and finances can be affected. Litigations and issues with the government machinery can begin. Personal health issues can start. The immediate family is disturbed, relationships with the extended family can be affected. There can be losses, failures and unfavourable events etc depending on which aspects of your life are controlled by Jupiter and Saturn.

If your ascendant is Sagittarius, Pisces, Capricorn or Aquarius then you will have an easier time. Or if Jupiter and Saturn both are capable of giving auspicious results together, then too the negativity can be reduced. Then the turmoil will exist in life, but on manageable levels and it will eventually be for your own good.

The most intensely karmic Antardasha periods

And finally the Jupiter-Venus or the Venus-Jupiter sub-periods.

In both these sub-periods, both Guru’s will try to teach you their lessons together, simultaneously. Do read my this post on Venus-Jupiter energies working together. The logic for Venus-Jupiter interaction remains the same in the Dasha interpretation too. I have written about the Jupiter Mahadasha and Venus Mahadasha in case anyone wants to get into these main-periods in depth.

Jupiter is the Dev-guru. His students are the easier ones, the front-benchers. His teaching method is rather simplistic. He will give you all the expansion you need for a reasonably comfortable life. He hopes that if you are given all these reasonable necessities then you will naturally turn towards the spiritual. But he forgets that human mind always wants more desires. No human is satisfied with the “reasonable comforts”, the mind always wants more and more. Even if it knows that desires is all an illusion still it expects happiness from the material and tries to finds strange justifications in pursuing these desires. So Jupiter’s premise is very gentle, kind, hopeful and is not really suitable for the Kali-yug’s human mind. He is generally kind and benevolent to everyone.

Venus has the worst students, the back-benchers. He knows that given half the chance, his students will indulge in all sorts of inauspicious, immoral, out of control behaviour. So his teaching methods are very practical and very cryptic. He will give you all the luxuries, more than you ever thought you wanted, but poison them subtly so that you are never satisfied with them. He will let you run frantically behind your illusory desires, let your mind exhaust itself. He waits patiently for you to realise that complete satisfaction is not possible in these created worlds, he waits for you to subdue your own mind. Once you realise this fact, understand and experience its truth, he offers you spiritual practice. Then he continually tests you, keeps you on your toes, makes you understand the illusion of the material very thoroughly and only then if you pass, he grants you Moksh. Very very few make pass in his classes.

Now in these two antardashas, you are under the control of these two teachers simultaneously. These periods become highly confusing as your internal self, your mind, your personal spiritual practices, your outer religious observances are all muddled up. This muddle overflows into every part of your life, you are uncomfortable. The actual results will depend on the actual horoscope and the transits but the overall theme of this two antardashas will be a soul-stirring confusion. Something good will come of it, but eventually.

The most intensely karmic Antardasha periods

This was a general discussion on the most karmic antardashas. In these typical periods try to keep your moral compass steady, develop a mature perspective, consider the other party’s views also and do some spiritual practice so that you have reserves of inner strength to deal with the issues which will crop up. To evaluate these periods more specifically in your own context, you will have to analyse the power of the Mahadasha-ruler and the Antardasha-ruler in depth from your own birth chart. I have written several posts on Vimshottari dashas, do use the Index page to locate them in case you wish to read them. Then the background energy of the Dasha will be modulated by the current transits. So locate the current position of the MD and AD Ruler planets in the skies and find out which house of your birth chart they are influencing at present. Thus you will get an all-round perspective on what is happening. If your birth horoscope and current transits are powerful and auspicious then you will be able to use these very same situations to your advantage. If not, then the suffering will be as above.

eg, I know someone whose ascendant lord is Venus, Saturn is the Yogkarak. This man is now in the Venus-Saturn antardasha. Despite these two planets being auspicious and strong in his birth chart, he is going through difficult times now exactly as above. Now Venus is going to do his retrograde/combust act in Taurus, so this person is in for some very tumultuous times. The only saving grace is that he will gain something significant after Sept. But till then things have to be endured. (How is sweet perfume made? Delicate flowers are crushed to release their essences. This man is now being crushed by Venus and Saturn, systematically and dispassionately.)

The present times are very upside-down! These will help you understand the energies which are active now. The current year is a very typical environment. Your actions and reactions now will have implications stretching on for several lifetimes. All of us will be facing challenges in several parts of our life, and these challenges will all come at once. Those who have weaker birth horoscopes will suffer more, this would be the majority of us. But those few, who have powerful planetary placements in their birth charts, will use these challenges proactively and rise to even greater heights, emerging even stronger after this turbulence settles down.

 

The toughest Vimshottari Antardasha

Vimshottari dasha system is the most common one which all students of Jyotish learn. In this, the format is a main-period/Mahadasha, sub-period/antar-dasha and further sub-sub periods, a total of 5 levels. The tone of this main-period is further modulated by the subsequent sub-sub periods. This covers the 120yrs of a human life. The Maha-Dashas are Ketu Mahadasha is 7years, Venus mahadasha is the longest at 20 Years, Sun Mahadasha is 6 Years, Moon Mahadasha is 10 Years, Mars Mahadasha is 7 Years, Rahu Mahadasha is 18 Years, Jupiter Mahadasha is 16 Years, Saturn Mahadasha is 19 Years and Mercury Mahadasha is 17 Years.

The important thing in analysing the Vimshottari is analysing the power and the nature of the Mahadasha MD ruler and the Antardasha AD ruler and the interaction between them. (If you are experienced enough you can attempt adding the rulers of the sub-sub periods etc to this analysis too.)

So open your vedic software, input your birth data and check what planet’s MD and which planet’s AD you are in at the present moment. We have to now analyse the relationship between these two planets to get a sense of how this sub-period will be like.

This is our example chart, Aleister Crowley the famous occultist and creator of the Thoth tarot deck, birth details, 12th Oct 1875, 11:43 pm Leamington UK. Suppose Crowley was in Jupiter MD and Rahu AD ie ‘Jupiter-Rahu’ period. Now analyse the birth chart, Cancer ascendant so Jupiter is a functional malefic (he owns the 6th and 9th houses and his mooltrikon sign Sagittarius lies in the 6th house, maha-dusham-sthan). Rahu is a functional malefic for all ascendants.

Analysing further. Jupiter is the owner of the 6th house, ie his mool trikon sign lies in the 6th house so he will bring in all the keywords of the 6th house into focus during this period. Ie debts, disease, enemies, arguments, imbalances of all sorts, all one-one relationships will break down, business relationships will also show the strain, spiritual practice will be affected. There will be stress, tension as Jupiter’s expansive abilities will expand the 6th house’s ‘serve or suffer’ motif. He owns the 9th house too, but this is just his own sign not his mooltrikon sign. So there will be some positives with some negatives. He will make Crowley dogmatic, rigid in his opinions, he will not be able to appreciate the others point of view, his teachers, professors, even people whom he considers his spiritual teachers can misguide him. For Cancer ascendant Jupiter cannot give beneficial results outrightly as he owns the 6th house. Some good results from the 9th house can be expected but these will be tainted by Jupiter’s ownership of the 6th house. Jupiter himself occupying the 4th house, Libra, with Mars and Venus. Thus his comfort levels are just average. So the Jupiter MD will not give overall very pleasing results. There will be some high points as the 9th house keywords give some benefits but the 6th house ownership over-shadows it all.

In this we have the Rahu AD, ie the Jupiter-Rahu period. Rahu is occupying the 9th house and with the Moon in Pisces. Any graha in the 9th house is capable of giving good results. Rahu is influenced by Moon and Jupiter. Of these Jupiter is the functional malefic. And Moon as ascendant lord is a benefic. But here we must consider that the Moon-Jupiter in the Shakata yog, 6/8 axis. So Moon and Jupiter are not comfortable with each other, which affects Rahu’s ability to give good results too. So Rahu gains more power to do mischief. And the keywords he will damage are related to the 9th house, Moon and Jupiter. So we cannot expect much good from Rahu during the periods he controls.

Then Jupiter and Rahu are mutually in the 6/8 axis.This is the most traumatic axis for two planets to be in as their energies are sucked up in the vortex of karmic suffering/ catastrophic changes. Both are highly uncomfortable with each other and cannot cooperate to give auspicious results on the physical planes.

So overall this Jupiter-Rahu period would have been difficult for Crowley. (This was a basic analysis, you can add more pointers from the Ashtakvarga charts, the shad-bala values, the navamsha, their nakshtra etc depending on your level of study/experience)

Remedies for combust planets

Now come back to your horoscope,

Check which planets are placed in the 6/8 axis. The MD and AD of these two planets will be the most traumatic ones in your life. Eg if Jupiter and Saturn are placed in the 6/8 axis in your birth chart then Jupiter-Saturn and Saturn-Jupiter periods will cause trouble. Or if Venus and Saturn are placed in the 6/8 axis in your birth chart both the Venus-Saturn and Saturn-Venus periods will be traumatic.

Find out which are the functional malefics in your chart. And if they are adequately supported by benefics or made even worse by aspects from other malefics? Periods ruled by the functional malefics are invariably stressful. Eg in our example horoscope, Cancer ascendant, so Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Rahu and Ketu related periods have potential for causing trouble. Eg Now if a Cancer ascendant person is in a MD or AD of these planets then he will definitely face some issues in life during this period. Eg Jupiter-Saturn, Saturn-Jupiter, Jupiter-Mercury, Mercury-Saturn, Saturn-Mercury, Rahu-Jupiter etc all combinations of these planets sub-periods will give stress. The exact source of this stress will be the energies of the houses they own, the houses they are placed in and the houses which they aspect.

Next if the MD and AD ruling functional malefic planets themselves are placed in the dushamsthan. Ordinarily the logic is that malefics in dushamsthan in the birth chart are a good thing. Use a thorn to remove a thorn concept (vipreet raj yog). But a problem arises when the same planet controls two houses, one dushamsthan and one auspicious. In our eg, it is Cancer ascendant, Jupiter controls the 6th dusham and 9th Kona, the Dharmasthan. Or Saturn controls 7th, a kendra house and 8th, a dusham. Here if the malefic planet is placed in a dusham sthan or not supported by benefics then the other auspicious house owned by him also suffers. Eg If in our example, if Saturn were placed in the 12th house, he would reduce the intensity of the 8th house issues but also reduce the auspiciousness of the marriage, partnerships, intimacy, finances, spiritual practice etc. Or if Jupiter is powerless it will reduce the karmic burdens of the 6th house but also reduce the auspiciousness of the 9th house, so the blessings from the ancestors, guidance from teachers, real Learning, progeny, auspicious benefits from past lives, sense of the divine, in fact every aspect of the current life will be affected by ill-luck. This effect on the other auspicious house can be alleviated if this house is occupied or strongly aspected by a benefic. But if this other auspicious house is even more adversely affected by malefic influences then it will be worse.

Finally check the current transit of the MD and AD planets in the skies. If these are transiting through crucial houses of the chart they will have severe impact on you. eg in our example, Crowley is going through Jupiter-Rahu, right now Jupiter is in Capricorn and debilitated (his movement is very weird this year). Rahu is wrecking havoc in Gemini. One eclipse was in Dec 2019 another is due in Jun2020. So Rahu is in his element, causing mischief. So Crowley if he were alive now, he would really have had a bad time just from these two planets activities. And at the last, superimpose the current transits on the birth chart to get an overview on what houses are under stress and which ones can give good results. For Crowley, Saturn and Mars are in Capricorn currently, so a big boost of energy which can be used for growth but he will take his toll on the physical body. ie Saturn return. Sun in Aries is favourable for profession related activities (though he is in the 6/8 axis from the birth Sun) etc and so on.

I hope you use this post to find out the challenging periods in your life and be more prepared to face them. In such potentially adverse periods it is better to remain alert about your thoughts, words and actions. Especially if the karmic heavyweights like Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are involved or planets who control the longer Vimshottari dashas are involved, as actions taken here can have long lasting impacts.

 

Retrograde and combust planets are unfair?

Karako bhavo nashto, Ruler of the house in the house

This is one statement which is bandied about much without understanding what it really means. ‘Karako bhavo nashto’. The general understanding is that if the karak/agent of a house gets placed in that same house, it utterly destroys the results of that house. (Karak = agent bhavo = of the house, nasto = destruction).

Karak is a word with several meanings.

First is the Bhava-karak. The agent of the house. These planets have a say over the matters of these houses in subtle ways.

  • Sun is the karak of the 1st, 9th and 10th.
  • Moon is the karaka of the 4th
  • Mercury is the karaka of the 4th and 10th
  • Venus is the karaka of the 7th house
  • Mars is the karak of the 3rd and 6th
  • Jupiter is the karak of the 2nd, 5th, 10th and 11th
  • Saturn is the karaka of the 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th

The next way of understanding karak is the owner of that house. eg in a horoscope with Aries as the 1st house. Mars will be a karak of the 1st house. Venus will be the karak of the 2nd house and so on. I will focus on this meaning in this post as the first meaning is popularly known and analysed in depth by several people. The concept however remains the same for both meanings.

So what happens if a planet is placed in the same house for which it is a karak?

It will emphasise the things connected with that house.

Eg suppose that the ascendant lord is placed in the ascendant sign/ 1st house or the Sun is placed in the 1st house. This will make you more focussed on the things related to the individual personality and the environment around you. You are perfectly suited to your environment. The major life experiences will revolve around you. The life experiences related to this house will be more intense and significant. A major portion of the consciousness is linked to this house/sign/planet’s results.

This can get over-whelming sometimes,

Eg suppose this is happening for your 7th house. This will make your partnerships your life’s most happening focus, too much perhaps! Your wife/ husband/ business partners can take too much time/ energy. You might ignore the other aspects of your personality/ life because of this focus. Other aspects of life will seem comparatively duller and uninteresting, so you might ignore them. This can land you in trouble. But the possible negatives can be easy to manage if you are aware of what can happen.

If this house is linked to a living person, this person can try to dominate you.

Eg if this is happening in the 4th house, your mother will have a major influence in your life. The relationship can get quite much, ‘too much of a good thing’. If you are sensible enough to understand how much is enough, this can be a good thing. The person signified by this house is over-confident, over-involved, over-assertive and over-linked to your life experiences.

This placement will give also more of the non-living things connected to that house.

eg So if its the 4th house, you may have a good house, cars, properties and a nice connect with your home culture. This can be a good thing. The attributes of the house are not destroyed, they are quite present, sometimes in double-dose. But they are in some way ‘diminished’. Too much can become a burden if not managed properly.

Karako bhavo nashto, Ruler of the house in the house

There is a possibility for some imbalance. Suppose that the planet is occupying his own sign. Now he and his sign both are together for better or worse.

Let’s take an example, Libra ascendant, so 4th house is Capricorn ruled by Saturn. 4th house is also subtly influenced by its Bhava-karak Moon.

  • Situation 1 – If Saturn is placed in the 9th house/Gemini sign. The item ‘mother’ will be defined by 4th house, Capricorn, Saturn, 9th house, Gemini, Mercury, 6/8 axis operating between 4th-9th house, Moon’s position, other planets present/ aspecting all these etc. This will give a more faceted personality, diverse interactions and a more balanced situation. There are so many planets/ signs/ houses contributing in some way or the other. The item ‘mother’ is a composite of all these. If something is going negative there will be something going positive to balance the item ‘mother’. Now if Capricorn has malefic planets placed but if Saturn has a nice house exchange with Mercury the item ’mother’ does not suffer much. Something compensates. Next, if in transit, Capricorn get Ketu placed in it, he can cause separation/ death of the mother, but if Gemini+birth Saturn gets a transit Jupiter placed in it, he will add positivity to the situation. There will be separation for something nice, eg might leave home and go to a hostel for education. There is scope for some other planet to compensate.
  • Situation 2 – Now if the 4th house Capricorn has Saturn placed in it. The item ‘mother’, will be influenced by only by the 4th house, Capricorn, Saturn and subtly by Moon. The karak Saturn is in his own house. If in this case there are malefic influences on Capricorn sign they will be on its owner Saturn too. There is limited scope for compensation and the item ‘mother’ will suffer from imbalance. Now in transit, if Capricorn gets Ketu placed in it, it will affect both the sign and its lord and will cause death or sharp separation of the mother. There is no other compensating influence.
  • Situation 3 – Suppose Moon is in Capricorn. This line of reasoning will be the same as situation 2 above, just replace ‘Saturn’ by ‘Moon’.

So a planet placed in his own house will become strong and beneficial. But becomes vulnerable because any afflictions affect both him and his sign/ house. There is lesser possibility for compensation. If the afflictions are in the birth chart then you should take due care. If these are temporary ie occurring in transit then you should be careful for the duration of this transit.

In very brief, the karak planet’s behaviour when placed in their own signs /houses,

  • Sun in own sign/ house gives over confidence, determination, enjoys professional authority, is dominating, self-centered, has an over-bearing father/ religious teachers. This Sun does not allow the person to ‘see’ the problems of people dependant on him. This is not good for a happy married life but can give quite good social status and creativity.
  • Moon in own sign/ house can make one more emotional, the watery characteristics are exaggerated, the astral self is over-sensitive. The mother has a disproportionate influence over one’s life. Dreams, intuition and the other dimensions are more accessible.
  • Mercury in own sign/ house can give an argumentative behaviour, annoying, juvenile at times, too much self-promotion, writes a lot, a highly visible journalist, irritating, his siblings, co-workers are also high visible and analytical people.
  • Venus in own sign/ house can either degenerate into a pleasure seeking mindset or a very deep spiritual inclination. A desire for physical pleasure exists which cannot be satisfied. There are always luxuries, social interactions and material assets. There is a internal desire for perfect balance and beauty.
  • Mars in own sign/ house gives enhanced aggression. Over-confidence, often misplaced confidence, wants to compete and tries to do things on his own, dislikes partnership and will refuse help. Diseases related to heat are common.
  • Jupiter in own sign/ house can give a dogmatic theoretical mindset, inability to accept other’s life-philosophy, over-expansion, rituals of religion can attract, can be a wonderful teacher but a a parent it will be difficult for the children.
  • Saturn in own sign/ house can give a bitter mindset, a sense of resentment, regret, always compares himself with others from more socially privileged circumstances, feels socially isolated, is very hard working, helps others and is hyper aware of professional and social situations. The father also has his own mental problems of fitting into society and career concerns. The early childhood is often traumatic but things ease out after Saturn matures.

This statement ‘Karako bhavo nashto’, is to be seen only in context of the 1st divisional chart or birth chart not the further divisional charts. And the situation will improve after the planet matures.

Now one placement does not make a reading. (I consider that at least 3 combinations indicating the same thing should be present to give a tangible result.) If you have such a placement in your chart,

  • Check if there are aspects of other planets on this house/ sign/ planet. If you have benefics aspecting or malefics. If there are benefics aspecting this position can give very favourable results in life.
  • Look at the navamsha position of the planet concerned. Is there a pattern where the inner potential supports outer manifestation. If so expect very solid and satisfying results from this planet.
  • Be careful during his Mahadasha and antardasha in other planet’s mahadasha (Vimshottari system). And during his significant transits. There could be unexpected events. If you can use the energy of these events in the right spirit then you can gain significant benefits from this situation.
  • However you must be careful if there are malefic influences on this planet in birth or in transit. As during this time you will be more vulnerable in these aspects of life.

‘Karako bhavo nashto’, is not so damaging as it is made out to be. If you have this combination, know that you have a lot of potential but it requires intelligent use. Once you are aware of how it works, you can use it more effectively.

You change every instant of your life.

Our life experiences change us. These experiences to come are predicted from the birth chart and the time when these will occur is predicted using a combination of the birth chart, the Dasha and the transiting planets. For a complete well-balanced prediction these three things have to be considered. How you will feel about these experiences will be seen from your birth moon chart.

eg My son asks me to get him a glass of water I do it, quite routine. Five minutes later he asks me to get him his school-bag lying by my side. Now I scold him. What changed? In these 5 mins I have slammed my fingers in the door and I am in pain! My fingers are hurting and I couldn’t care less about his school-bag. The reaction was different as I have changed. Try to observe yourself as you go about your daily routine, you will notice so many small but significant things about yourself. You change continuously, you flow!

The birth chart indicates what you have chosen for you in this current life. And every chart has ‘free will’ built in. There are always options and you are always choosing between them. You may not be aware but you are always choosing. The options and the type of options vary. If you have chosen to rebalance the hurts you have given others, you will be born with a lower than average birth chart. The possibilities indicated in this chart will be less and there will be less options. If you have chosen to rebalance the good you have done in your past lives you will be born with a better horoscope and the you will have more options to choose from.

  • Eg you get marriage proposals from two families and both are quite unsuitable. So the choice is to choose between these two unsuitable matches or remain unmarried. Either way it is rather inauspicious.
  • And the other example is, you get marriage proposals from ten families all of whom are well-off, so whatever you will choose, you are assured of a good married life.

Everything is based on your birth chart. Only those events indicated in the chart will happen, none other. If there are no possibilities of surgeries happening, there will no surgeries in the life, however bad the current period/ transit may be.

I have written quite a few posts on analysing transits and Dasha periods, the general results which you can expect. (There was a question on chart analysis) Open your Indian/ Vedic software. Check the Dasha section. If there are options listed, choose Vimshottari Dasha system. You will first see the main Mahadashas listed out. Suppose the person was born in the Venus Mahadasha at birth and at present the Moon Mahadasha is going on. So to analyse the present time, look at the Moon Mahadasha. If it has a drop-down menu, check out its sub-periods, find out the current sub-period/ antardasha he is into. Suppose the person is in the Ketu sub-period/ Antardasha at present. So this will be written as ‘Moon-Ketu’. (There are 5 layers to the Dasha system so every minute of your life is mapped out.)

Now try to fine-tune the results like this. (There was a question for an example.)

e.g. Suppose your chart with Aquarius ascendant. Jupiter is lord of the 11th and 2nd houses in the birth horoscope and is himself placed in the 5th house. He will be linked to gains and the larger groups you interact with. He will also be incharge of creating wealth for you and your family, also keeping you active in the smaller family groups. So in any Dasha period (either his own Mahadasha or his sub-period in other planet’s Mahadasha) controlled by him, he will ensure that you gain in some way or the other and are more socially available. He will also improve your relationships with your family members and make your money. As he is placed in the creative and self-oriented 5th house of intelligence he will give auspicious results. Also he will modulate your nature in his typical benevolent, expansive and hopeful mould. Thus during his period you will feel more generous, helpful towards others and be more philosophical in outlook. People who meet you in this period will take away an impression of your Jupiter-influenced personality. And your impression of them will also be through your Jupiter-tinted glasses. Jupiter controlling your interactions with these others will create overall auspicious and beneficial results all over. Every aspect of your life will be influenced by Jupiter, the 5th house (his placement) and the 2nd and  11th houses (his own signs are here) dynamics. These keywords will be the focus of your life. This will be the background theme for the 16yrs of your Jupiter Mahadasha.

Now within this Jupiter Mahadasha you will have the sub-periods /Antardasha of the 9 planets. To analyse how the sub-periods will be, analyse further.

Now if you have your birth Moon in the 12th house, Capricorn sign. He is now the lord of the 6th house placed in the 12th house. So his results by himself will be overall beneficial (vipreet raj yog). But he is now in the adversarial 6/ 8 axis from Jupiter’s birth position. (The 12th house is counted eighth from the 5th house). In this Jupiter mahadasha, you will undergo the sub-periods in sequence. Soon you will reach the sub-period of the Moon. In this Jupiter-Moon period, your personality will change. Jupiter and Moon are not comfortable with each other as they are linked in the axis of loss/ pain/ shock/ trauma. So in this period, the events, the people whom you will meet and your personal nature too, all will show signs of this internal discomfort between Jupiter-Moon. You might meet with some temporary setbacks in your family related matters, some unlucky investments will affect your wealth, you might get some illness of the throat, your social life may tire you out, you may feel exhausted. These will be temporary as the power of Jupiter’s placement is more than the Moon’s placement in this case, but it will happen. Your emotions will remain disturbed and you may not be able to rest, perhaps you may need to travel more. People meeting you at this time will carry this impression of your personality. And you too will look on people differently, there will be an influence of the uncomfortable Moon influencing Jupiter’s general benevolence here.

As soon as the sub-period changes, your personality will again change. After Moon’s sub-period, the next in sequence is the Mars sub-period. If Mars is placed to give auspicious results overall and also with respect to Jupiter, you will feel energised, be active, health will improve, mental fog will vanish, full of energy, new ideas, new challenges, competitive spirit, new avenues of life will open up. And your acquaintances will wonder what happened! They are now seeing the new Jupiter-Mars you. And you too will feel that you are meeting all exciting people as your perception is tinted by Jupiter-Mars.

And finally during the 16yrs of Jupiter Mahadasha and even the 2-3yrs of each sub-period, there will be periodic transits of the planets in the sky. (eg the slowest Saturn transits every 2.5yrs per sign and the fastest Moon at 2.25days per sign.) The planets will change their speeds and also their direction of movement, forward or retrograde. They will go combust or eclipses will happen in time. All these events will give their effects. You will have to factor in these details and fine-tune your predictions accordingly.

Thus the environment, the personality, the perceptions, the way you act and react change literally every second.

I sometimes get clients with problems in their marriage. Each complains that the other husband/ wife has changed and that is why the marriage is on the rocks. But time changes everything. The husband you have now is not the one you married! And neither are you the same person you were when you got married. So much time has passed, transits and dashas have changed both you and your husband/ wife. Accept that change happens you cannot stop it or block it, you have to change with it, evolve with it. There is no option, you cannot hold down a situation indefinitely. Your ability to adapt to change is linked to your birth Mercury’s position and also to some extent to the current Mercury’s transit in the sky. If your birth Mercury is placed well, you are more adaptable and more easily able to navigate.

Recently I came across a client whose jealous co-worker had done some negative things to him due to which his career prospects had stilled for a couple of years. Black-magic. He met a shaman/ tantrik who helped him get rid of that negative binding. And everything which had been unnaturally forced to go still in his career, exploded. The more is something suppressed, the more potential force it develops and literally explodes when the binding is removed. Within one month of his ‘cleansing’, he got promoted and got placed in a higher-up post, he met new people, made new contacts etc, his professional life re-bounded with all the suppressed pent-up energy of the past years.

So accept the change, work with it. Let the change occur as per its time. Study your own horoscope so that you can be aware of the changes coming up so that you can more intelligently navigate through. The present 2 months, till Jan 2020 are very intense with very strange energies, events will happen whether you choose or not. Change yourself to use the opportunities which are being generated now.

Jupiter Mahadasha

I have written a very detailed post here on Vimshottari dasha analysis, generally on how evaluate the effects of planets during their planetary periods. This post is about the time periods controlled by Jupiter. Here are two posts on a short-cut analysis based on which houses these the planets own. 

Now Jupiter Mahadasha will follow Rahu Mahdasha in sequence. If your birth moon Nakshatra/ Lunar mansion is Punarvasu, Vishakha or Purvabhadrapada you will have your Jupiter Mahadasha going on at your birth. The balance of the planet’s dasha period remaining at birth is calculated using the location (degree/minute/second) of the Moon in the nakshatra. If you get this birth time wrong your starting point will be wrong thus your entire life-time’s calculation will go wrong.

And then of course Jupiter’s sub-periods/ Antardasha in other planet’s Mahdasha will also carry his flavour.

Jupiter Mahadasha

Jupiter mahadasha is quite long, a full 16 years. If he is well placed this period can be extraordinary covering a lot of life’s major activities, education, marriage, children, health and profession. This post is a framework post in which you will add your keywords depending on the planetary positions in your own chart. Here you will learn how to analyse Jupiter’s period yourself. If you already know a bit of astrology then go through the stepwise analysis. If you just want to know the overall indications then you can skip forward to the actual general results further below.

Step 1 is to know the aspects of life which Jupiter represents and the power he has to deliver his results.

  1. Jupiter in your birth chart (also called the divisional chart 1/D-1).
    • Which house and in which sign is he placed? Which aspects of life is he controlling? If he is controls the dushamstan, 6th house, 8th house or 12th house then there might be some unpleasant material results.
    • Is he in the sign of a friend/neutral/enemy planet.
    • Is he exalted/debilitated?
    • Which planets is he conjoint/ aspected by? Thus which other aspects of the personality is he influencing directly and indirectly.
    • Has he matured? Is your client yet to reach the maturity age of Jupiter or is the maturity being held back by conjunction with later maturing planets? Jupiter matures quite early in life but e.g. if he is conjoint Rahu he will mature at 48yrs!
    • Is he retrograde?
    • Is he combust?
  2. You can repeat this same analysis from the birth Moon sign to get the effects that this Jupiter Mahadasha is going to have on the emotional aspects. Rotate the chart around and place the sign containing the Moon in the first house and re-draw the chart. These aspects of life will often be completely different from what is happening on the physical level. (If you find this complicated, do it whenever you feel more confident.)
  3. And this same analysis using the divisional chart 9, Navamsha chart will give a perspective on the sub-conscious expectations and also the sum total of Jupiter’s potential. (If you find this complicated, do it whenever you feel more confident.)

A simple example, if in a chart, in D-1 – Jupiter is the owner of 1st house, Sagittarius and 4th house, Pisces. Jupiter is placed in 4th house house, Pisces (this becomes a Kendra-adhi-pati combination!). Moon is in 10th house Virgo. In D-9, this Jupiter shifts to the 2nd house in his exaltation sign Libra (the D9 is the navamsha divisional chart which gives the deepest potential of the planets) Thus Jupiter-Moon in D-1 are placed in the favourable 7/7 opposite axis. Period of Jupiter will give emotional happiness. Also the sub period of Moon in the main period of Jupiter will give beneficial results. Jupiter is the ascendant lord so in his periods will give expansions to the personality and create an enabling environment. So during overall Jupiter’s period there will be a sub-conscious expectation of money, family time, happiness, speaking out, gains from/to the family. The physical environment will grant lots of interactions, validation, money, resources, good times, with family, property, mother, females in general, siblings, bosses, culture, traditions, society and profession. But the person will not be able to make the most of these material opportunities because of his essentially mild nature, the kendra-adhi-pati effect. But as the emotional expectations will be satisfied the period will go by reasonably well.

Step 2 Smaller segments are called successively Antar-dasha, Pratyantar-dasha, Sookshma-dasha and Pran-dasha. The logic on how to analyse these even smaller units remains the same for each planetary owner of the sub/sub periods.

  1. Find out the power of the sub-period planetary lord and the aspects of life that he controls just like Step 1 for Jupiter above.
    • Which houses he rules over.
    • Especially if this sub-period lord is the owner of the 2nd or 7th house (Marakesh) its sub-period within the Jupiter Mahadasha can cause physical death. If Jupiter himself is the Markesh then he can cause death in the sub/sub-sub periods owned by him.
  2. The mutual relationship between Jupiter and the sub-period lord. If they are in the 6/8 or 2/12 or 3/11 uncomfortable aspects, that sub-lord’s sub-period will not be comfortable. They will be worse at the start of the sub-period and become better towards the end. Ultimately give a sense of expansion and optimism.

Step 3 is the routine planetary transits/ Gochar which will modify results during their transit periods. Using your software draw your birth chart on a paper and superimpose the current planetary positions on it. Use a different pen so that you can make sense of the composite chart you are drawing. Check out for the aspects and their strengths. 

We use the Vimshottari dasha system to time events. One single placement in your chart will indicate so very many things. How to know which event will happen when? For this timing aspect you have to see the Dasha and the transits. The broad framework will be your D-9, the important events will be reflected in the D-1. The broad framework for the timing will be the Dasha and the fine-tuning will be the transits.

Jupiter Mahadasha

Now to analyse the sub-periods of the Jupiter Mahadasha, each of the 9 planets including Jupiter himself will own one of these sub-periods/antardasha in sequence. These are very very general readings just to trigger your own thought processes. Use these for reference, as a starting point for your own further analysis. Every horoscope is unique!

1. Jupiter antardasha/sub-period –

  • You have analysed your Jupiter’s power to give results in step 1 above so this sub-period will be a double dose of Jupiter. 
  • If Jupiter is poised to give you good results then expect expansion in all forms, gains, happiness, your boss will appreciate you, marriage is possible, your husband will shower you with affection, you will gain wealth and also spend to make your life more comfortable, children may be born to you, you may gain students, children will be well and bring you joy. You will perform religious activities, go on pilgrimages. Higher education, teaching jobs might get available. You will get support from your spiritual teachers, your peers, ancestral spirits will bless you. You think on philosophical lines, meditate or read something which nourishes your soul. You feel hopeful!
  • If Jupiter is going to give you adverse results then this period can be a bit difficult. Jupiter placed in the 6th, 8th, 12th houses or Jupiter as a ruler of the sign placed in these dusham-sthan. Especially in Libra and Capricorn ascendant charts, as Jupiter is a functional malefic here. Evaluate your chart carefully. There will be episodes of anxiety, stress and distress. The same keywords of your life as above can be a source of problems. However Jupiter will ultimately create a spiritually inclined personality but the way he will do this will not be pleasant. In these cases the first part of the sub-period will be more problematic than the second half. Be careful if you get body pain, go to a proper doctor.
  • Overall this period will create a lot of opportunities which you can actively explore. Keeping in with Jupiter’s expansion, optimism, benevolence and wisdom you will take up new activities with hope and positivity.

2. Saturn antardasha

  • Saturn and Jupiter are generally neutral to each other as both respect elders, value knowledge, are quite serious about the karmic lessons. However there is one difference, one expands and the other contracts.
  • Depending on Saturn’s position in your chart expect increase in your duties. But your energy and enthusiasm in performing those duties will be enhanced. You can be in prominent social positions, given more professional responsibilities, a promotion, your father will benefit. More authority in your hands. Interactions with the government, superior officers or social seniors will be fruitful. You will be given resources. You will gain.
  • But if Saturn is poised to give you malefic results then this will be a period of conflicting energies where the expansion of Jupiter will hit the terribly constrictive influence of Saturn and you will suffer strain in all these aspects of life mentioned above. Physical health can be a problem in this case, especially disease of the bones, teeth, skin and nerves. Your birth father may suffer or you might suffer because of him. In Saturn’s periods its always better to submit to whatever regulations and work-plan that he puts you to. However you can modulate the negative effects by planning your life and work before he does it for you.
  • Jupiter Mahadasha

3. Mercury antardasha

  • Jupiter and Mercury are not the best of friends but they are karmic mirrors of each other. So ultimately compatible in the spiritual sense. If one is the teacher the other is the student. They get their real meaning only when they are with each other. 
  • If they both are in a good favourable axis expect best of both worlds. You will have the philosophy as well as the skill to convert this theory to action. Your students, brothers, brother-figures, extended family will support. You will earn money through speculation or stock markets. Financial investments will be in your favour. Communication is enhanced in every way, any place where you are required to talk, explain, read, write, instruct will be enhanced, you might learn a musical instrument! Your ability to think, plan, analyse is enhanced. Also Mercury is action, your hands. So any actions which you do with your hands are energised. You might learn a new skill or a craft. You will be granted the boldness and courage and this sub-period will be quite beneficial for you.
  • If they are not working together and are placed in unfavourable angles to each other then these above keywords will give you stress. Psychiatric problems are possible. There will be a danger of theft and cheating. There can be medical problems in nerves and skin. Pay attention to details but keep the larger picture in mind too, this will help.

4. Ketu antardasha

  • Ketu is the agent of dissolution of the material. He also takes on the character of the planets aspecting /conjunct him. So evaluate his karakatva /ability to give results, very carefully first.
  • If Jupiter and Ketu are mutually well placed this sub-period can give very good gains on the spiritual front. Whatever is draining your spiritual energy will be cut off. And because it is Jupiter involved, you will know what and why it has been released. There will be full understanding and joy in this process. If Ketu’s gains the ability to give material results as a result of the planet influencing him, then he can grant all these things in his sub-period. In this case he will grant material stuff especially through speculative means.
  • But if Ketu is badly placed, then this period will cause problems, this can include physical death or feelings of emptiness and abandonment. You might strive for something which you can never attain. Jupiter’s hope is misguided and you face rejection. Everything that Jupiter stands for can abandon you. Your husband/wife, your boss, your children, the philosophies you live your life by can leave you. You will experience the loss of the material. This will ultimately pull you towards the spiritual side but the process will give you pain.

5. Venus antardasha

  • Venus and Jupiter are the two Guru’s. Both are quite friendly with each other, their ‘enmity’, is on the philosophical level. Both are teachers but their students are very different, Venus’s students are the worst goons and his teaching methods are very different.
  • If Venus and Jupiter have a good working relationship then you will have a very good time. Benefits from all sources, relationships, money, social and emotional fulfilment, spiritual progress, new partnerships, bargains, asset creation, gains from spouse, enjoyable time with your loved ones. Marriage, promotion,  pilgrimages, journeys, birth of children etc are all possible. There will be recognised leadership roles and dignified teaching roles in this period.
  • Relations with the opposite gender, girlfriends/boyfriends are quite possible. But this period wont allow marital infidelity unless malefic influences.
  • If Venus is badly placed in your chart, there will be tensions in relationships, both personal and professional. You will lose your spiritual moorings so it will be worse. Spouse and children will suffer with you. Sisters, wife and women in general will be a source of stress. You might get addicted to damaging substances. Loss of wealth and litigations can result. However if you are aware of what is happening you can plan and reduce the impact of these events on yourself.
  • Jupiter Mahadasha

6. Sun antardasha

  • Sun is leadership and self-ego. You desire to be known.
  • In this sub-period, if Sun and Jupiter are working well together, you will get a change to display your creativity. Your intelligence, speculative intelligence, creative genius, confidence, entitlements, charisma, etc will be enhanced. You might gain promotions, wealth, financial assets, money through stock markets ans similar speculations, marriage and birth of children is quite possible. If you are a creative writer, actor etc your publications and acting roles will be appreciated. For the politically inclined, this is a good period for political gains.
  • If the Sun is placed in an adversarial relation with Jupiter, or is badly placed then there may be some problems from the above aspects of your life causing stress. Problems with relatives and children are possible. Medical issues caused by ‘over-heating’ are possible. Jupiter and Sun get along quite well, so this sub-period will be reasonably ok.

7. Moon antardasha

  •  Moon is the sum total of your self, astral sub-conscious, the depths of your emotions, your intuition! Moon and Jupiter are quite good friends and Jupiter in in fact exalted in Moon-owned Cancer! So this period can be quite good in any case.
  • You will get close to your mother, maternal figures and home-land cultures. If you get married during this period, choose someone from a similar cultural background else it will cause issues. Child-birth, buying new houses, cars, property is quite possible. You might get into spiritual stuff, mediation, new education avenues etc. Nutrition, nurture and nature will be pleasing. Comfortable life and emotional security.
  • If Jupiter and Moon are poised to give unfavourable material results then you will be in a bad time. Your mother will give you bad advice. You will be in trouble because of your over-attachment to your homeland culture, maybe you get married and are unable to adapt to your spouse’s culture! Dreams, sleep astral self, sub-conscious states will be disturbed. Diseases related to the blood, liquids in the body are possible. Mental peace and emotional comfort will be denied. Will live away from home, will travel, the body will suffer on the physical and astral levels (Pancha-kosh).
  • However the results of what the planets are capable of giving are very important. Do this analysis very carefully. This is the foundation of your
  • I know a chart with a Jupiter and Moon placed together in the 12th house. Death occurred in the Mahadasha of Moon, sub-period of Mercury(ascendant lord), sub-sub-period Jupiter. She died of internal haemorrhage, the exact day was when the birth Moon transited this 12th house (blood/liquid expanded into the internal spaces of the body, all these keywords match with the chart). The soul took on the pret-yoni /spirit state and entered the Pitru-lok with very high level of energy because of this placement of Jupiter/Moon in 12th house (do read the Moksh-trikon).
  • Jupiter Mahadasha

8. Mars antardasha

  •  Mars is dynamic, challenging, pioneering and physically moving.
  • If Jupiter and Mars are together well placed you will benefit from your brothers, extended family as well as elders. Professional initiatives will grant success. Marriage is possible. You will be known socially, respected. Any physical activity which requires initiative will be promoted. Relations with the opposite gender, girlfriends/boyfriends will be many.
  • Mars is the ruler of the 2nd and 7th house for the Libra ascendant so during his periods he can cause physical death. So here if he is conjoint Jupiter, this sub-period can easily cause physical death, if the longevity has reached its limit.
  • One thing which you can observe is, your Mahadasha and Antardasha at the time of your marriage. Your spouse will reflect the nature of these two planets. Or check when your child was born, the nature of this child will also reflect the natures of the dasha controlling planets of your that time.
  • Mars can create problems if he is badly placed. Especially the start of the sub-period will be more troublesome than the latter part. There will be diseases related to ‘over-heating’, eyes and blood can be affected especially. Aggression, arguments and ill-relationship will be expanded.

9. Rahu antardasha

  • This is the chidra-dasha the last sub-period
  • Rahu is the exact opposite of Jupiter, he is sneaky, calculative, breaks rules, aspires for higher stations. In the closing phase of Jupiter mahadasha, Rahu cuts off your Jupiter persona. He accurately identifies all those things where you have let others take advantage of your benevolent Jupiter phase. Rahu will take stock of what you needed in these 16yrs, not what you gave of yourself. Misplaced hopes, humanitarian thoughts, misdirected charity work will stop. Even knowledge which you may have gained, if not furthering your personal goals and desires will be discarded. Rahu is very thorough about this, he will infuse ambition in all that Jupiter created. And this will be linked to your karma.
  • So during your Jupiter main-period, however kind and generous you may feel for others do keep track of what you are gaining from the interactions. This does not mean you have to be selfish, Jupiter will not allow you to be selfish. But at least be aware that what you are doing should benefit you too in some way or the other. This will make this last Rahu chidradasha more easy to navigate and you will be able to better consolidate your gains from Jupiter. Rahu will prepare you for your next Saturn persona, thus he will link your gains from Jupiter with a deep understanding of your karmic desires
  • Rahu takes on the influences of the planets conjoint/aspecting him. So do analyse his Karakatva (ability and strength to give results) before predicting material results.
  • If Jupiter and Rahu are poised to give good results together then he will give material pleasures and gains. Money, power, ambition, good physical health, pilgrimages, spiritual progress will be enhanced. Rahu is the things you have been ignoring in your past lives so under the influence of Jupiter, Rahu can actually grant you ambition with understanding a rare gift indeed.
  • If Rahu and Jupiter are not well placed together then there will dangers from cheats, disputes, thieves, diseases, marital discord, professional ruin etc caused by Rahu’s nature to over reach and then fall flat on his face. So if you have this combination in your chart do rein in your ambitions to what is realistically possible.

Jupiter Mahadasha

The generic remedy for those suffering from problems during this period of Jupiter Mahadasha is doing puja or reciting any mantra of Shiv or Vishnu or reciting the beej mantra of Jupiter on Thursdays, or doing his Homa, or donating any material associated with Jupiter etc.

You can also wear more of his colors, use the scents dear to him, eat more food associated with him and similar fun things to balance out his energies.

Jupiter is generous and benevolent, he expands everything he is connected to. And every house has some positive and negative things on the material front. Astrology tells you the options you have available, it is not fatalistic! So if you are going through his period, be very conscious and choose intelligently. You can choose, Jupiter allows this. So use his energies with confidence and intelligence so that you can gain on the spiritual as well as material fronts during his Dasha periods.
