Aries/Libra, The Beginnings, Part 2

Libra/ Tula is the 7th sign of the zodiac, it is thus the natural 7th house of the horoscope and rules over balance, relationships and fair partnerships. This sign is ruled by Venus the esoteric teacher. Libra is the axis on which the zodiac rests. For the physical body too, Libra represents your backbone on which the entire body is balanced.

The zodiac is divisible into two halves psychologically, and with Libra, begins the second half of the zodiac. This is the midpoint between the individual self and the Greater Self, between the material and the spiritual. Here, you withdraw from creation of new karma and focus on giving back and rebalancing your karma. The path of involution begins from Libra. Here you prepare for the long way back home. You begin with a deep understanding of your Karmic balance, a sobering realisation indeed. If your ascendant is Libra or your Moon sign is Libra or you have a significant number of planets placed in Libra in your chart this is how you will be on the inner deep levels.

Aries/Libra, The Beginnings, Part 2

You are exceptionally logical and intelligent. You will have lots of opportunities in life. A lot of scope to create relationships of every type. Your exceptional intelligence is essential as you decide the best possible opportunity to go with. You think in terms of bargains, ‘if I give so much how much will I get back’, always! If there are malefics here you will think in the material terms but if there are auspicious influences, you will think in terms of the spiritual and karma. Overthinking should be avoided, as this can lead to stress. Once you make your bargain, reevaluating it over and over again will cause anxiety. Thinking is exhausting. Initially the mind will be tired, later the body will also fall ill.

You want to work but you want clarity and perfection. You cannot exist in environments of doubt and ambiguity. You want clear instructions and if you are the boss, you are very clear about you directions to your juniors. Accuracy, precision, exactness, sincerity and on-time are your watch-words. You will then push yourself so hard to attain perfection that your back will hurt. You are not an original thinker but you always expand on ideas which you get by reading books or by interactions with others. Partnership in everything you do.

You cannot lie, unless malefic influences dominate. You will have sufficient wealth in life, you will rarely be poor. You have business acumen and can profit if you start your own business with a suitable partner. You are artistic and skilled. You like working with your hands or mind. You like geometry, maths, logic, languages. Whatever profession you choose you can excel. You tend to boast which is viewed negatively by others. You come across as a know-it-all, often prejudiced against others whom you think know less than you do. Cultivate the habit of listening to others, it will help as you are often misunderstood. If there are malefic influences here you will also subscribe to conflicting thought processes causing more misunderstandings.

You will perform religious and spiritual practices sincerely. Saturn is exalted in Libra and his father, the Sun is debilitated here. The sign favours systematic disciplined work for re-balancing karma. This allows you to be the sincere professional, sensitive to public opinion, at ease in large gatherings and able to profit in a transparent manner. You do not allow self-ego to rise and take center-stage, you are willing to work with others fairly. You put yourself after your duties, this you suffer. Learn to assert yourself once in a while. Ultimately however you gain divine favour and the deepest understanding of your real self. The sign 7th from Libra is Aries-Mars, so your partners are aggressive and rather selfish, self-focussed. You too desire aggressive and passionate partners, but you want a fair relationship, this you will never get, thus a sense of disappointment exists, especially in intimate relationships. Libra-Venus rarely indulges in infidelity after getting married, as you are very aware of the social image you project. Before marriage you do indulge in romantic affairs.

The sign is represented by the scales of the balance in perfect alignment. Now these scales represent opposing forces. These have been brought to balance. Understand this, the challenge that you face is to bring to precise balance, two opposing forces. If either one of these two is more/less, the entire personality crashes. Your duty is two-fold, first is to balance out these opposing forces and second is to maintain the balance forever. This requires constant work. If the forces change, you also have to change to compensate and bring the system back to equilibrium. This is extremely difficult to do in actual life. Libra people are always under great stress. The mind is always working, thinking of different ways to balance out things. Highly sensitive to change and often in physical pain. You seem to be in control of yourself. Your emotions, actions, reactions are always controlled. But only you know the price you pay for this outward control. Your entire self is focussed on balancing the changes which the external environment and its forces bears on you.

Aries/Libra, The Beginnings, Part 2

As a Libra, you are bound to balance always, you have no choice in this. And the environment is bound to change. Change is the only constant. Thus your stress. The entire Libra personality is repressed. (If you ever see a Libra breaking down under pressure you will understand this terrifying strain that he always labours under.)

Libra is between the Virgo and Scorpio. It is influenced most by demands from its neighbouring signs (2/12 axis is not very favourable). Virgo is the place where you serve/suffer and all agreements break down here, imbalances of very sort! Scorpio stings others and also the self, traumatic changes causing complete changes in the personality/environment. Libra sits between these two terrific forces and balances these conflicts. It is a strain. You are outwardly very calm, composed and relaxed but internally you seethe with conflicts and opposing energies which you have to balance.

Now the is another challenge, the drama of constant creation-death-rebirth constantly plays out here. Venus is both the lord of Libra and Taurus, counted eighth from Libra. Venus here modulates the adversarial 6/8 axis and forces the personality/environment into continual change often traumatic. As per the Vimshottari system, the Mahadasha of Venus is the longest at 20yrs. Lots of events occur during these 20yrs. For Libras the Dasha period of its owner planet himself is very stressful as rapid cycles of creation-destruction-recreation occur throughout this time.Mars is the owner of Scorpio and Aries which are placed 2nd and 7th from Libra, making Mars the Marak, often giving inauspicious results. Jupiter considered to be the biggest benefic planet is the ruler of the houses placed 3rd and 6th from Libra, making him a functional malefic, so he too cant do much good. Jupiter behaves opposite to his normal benefic nature! Saturn is the Yogkarak, the biggest benefic, as the owner of the 4th and 5th houses from Libra. But Saturn here deprives the native of maternal love and comforts of the home, he often lives away from the home-town. Also there is a disconnect from the internal divine intelligence, spiritual practice will give results but these come late in life after Saturn matures. Till then Libra suffers. Adolescent Mercury takes on the role of the peer/ patron as the ruler of the 9th house from Libra. Mercury is practice/skills and 9th represents theory/ philosophy. It is upto you to find the balance between these two opposing ideas! Mercury loses some of his auspiciousness as he also rules over the house 12th from Libra. Moon as the ruler of the 10th house loses his directional strength and searches for emotional support in the profession making him a bit dysfunctional. Sun as the ruler of the house 11th from Libra also makes you balance the opposing ideas of personal genius and self-ego v/s someone who is a part of large like-minded groups.

If you observe the planets, they are required to work against their fundamental nature here. As a Libra you have to balance out these things too, and you are doing it continually internally.

Libra has enormous potential especially the Libra ascendant. But this potential is lost as most Libras are engrossed in the outer, material, social aspect of their lives. They relegate the occult, spiritual, esoteric in the background. Venus is actually the Daityaguru Shukracharya, the teacher of the worst students so his teaching methods are a bit different. But the rare Libra who turns inside and tries to establish a relationship with his inner self is often successful as Shukra is the real Moksh-karak, agent of Illumination. Most Libras, as they grow older/mature, do focus on the inner self and progress spiritually.

Libra is a highly esoteric sign which suffers in the initial period of its life. If Saturn is well-placed it benefits after the age of 36yrs. The enormous potential of this sign can be utilised if it turns inwards and seeks its internal balance.

Aries/Libra, The Beginnings, Part 2

Venus the owner of Taurus and Libra

Venus owns the 2nd and the 7th signs/rashi of the Zodiac, Taurus/Vrushabh and Libra/Tula. Thus he is also the natural owner of the 2nd and 7th houses/bhava of the chart. He is the agent/Karak of treasuries and partnerships, of everything that adds value and validation to you. Venus is all the ways you feel good about yourself.

Venus the owner of Taurus and Libra

Venus is the Ruler of Taurus

This Venus personality has to maintain the resources of value in every sense, from the physical, spiritual, emotional, histories and songs. And he is very good at increasing his collections, hoards and treasuries of every type. He is the soul of every party and knows how to get the mood going. This Venus may sound easy-go-lucky but has an important role in maintaining the social norms and he is very serious about it. He is the custodian of the traditions, knowledge and stories of the family culture. He will resist every change which will unbalance. But his resistance is also beautiful and balanced, the iron fist in a velvet glove. At the very basic levels, he feels good about himself in the society when he has money!

This Venus can get so attached to money and the things that money can buy that he can subsume his personality to these things. He then considers his brotherhood and neighbourhood to be his biggest assets. He is interested in the stability of his homeland and also the welfare of his mother and maternal relatives. This Venus is quite at home with expressing his creativity and being in the public eye.  However he is susceptible to malefic evil eyes and jealousy, which are a result of being too much in the public eye. He is distrustful about equitable sharing of resources with legal partners and prefers keeping it to himself, however secret ways of increasing his assets appeal to him. With his chosen spouse he will be on good terms but there will be an undercurrent of unbalance, of complaints and stress. He is again not very interested in listening to his peers and paternal figures. His profession and actual father are very important to him though. His life philosophy will be to work hard and play hard! And he does gain through his profession and has multiple sources of income. Social status and power is the foundation of this Venus’s life and pleasure.

Attached to idea that he needs to be valuable in the eyes of the society by displaying his collections he will forget that he needs to find his own real personality first. By the time he realises that the validation he receives from society can be quite unpredictable, fleeting and erratic, it might be too late to seek his own Real Self.

Venus is the Banker in Taurus.

Venus is the Ruler of Libra

Venus in his second form is required to maintain legal and equitable partnerships of every type in every context. Personal, professional, emotional, spiritual, counselling, trading, etc, all sorts of relationships are defined by Venus. At the very basic levels he will feel good about himself if he has a good marriage. I have written a detailed post on the inherent balance of Libra here.

Libra seeks balance. Anything that is out of balance or unfair is deeply disturbing to this Venus. He is fair, impartial and quite intellectual here. He bargains and keeps track, if he has given out something he will expect fair returns. The earthy good humour of Taurus-Venus is absent here. Venus-Libra likes refined intellectual company. (I wonder does he even laugh out aloud till tears come in his eyes). His level of intellect can be so rarefied that he sometimes comes across as an intense workaholic driven personality. He is quite secretive about his own resources and his pleasures are also not in public. His favoured company is peers, patrons, religious and spiritual personalities with whom he can interact on the intellectual plane. He is on good terms with his own father and often is involved in a family business, most likely a lawyer! He likes his work and his office soon can become a home.

This Venus loves displaying his creativity in public, in front of an audience of strangers. Stage fright is simply out of the question. His children are also quite the little performers in school plays and lucky in life. His losses, diseases, debts and enemies are few on the physical plane but he suffers in secret. His partners are vigorous, physical leaders. He partners with pioneers and then follows them up creating bargains and alliances. He has few close friends and siblings with whom he connects. He can be very passionate about humanitarian ideals as long as it is fair for everyone concerned.

Venus is the Lawyer in Libra.

Venus the owner of Taurus and Libra

In my personal opinion Venus is even more dangerous than Saturn. Saturn is at least ‘in your face’ straightforward even, if he is going to make you balance your pending karma he will openly do it. You know you are in for a phase of hard work and stress. Saturn and Venus are also best buddies, with Saturn getting exalted in Libra.

But Venus coats every action of his with such sweetness that you never really understand what is really going on. He is the strictest teacher, Daityaguru Shukaracharya, and his karmic lessons are the most difficult because they don’t look like lessons. If you are satisfied with the validation you get from the society or your partners you will not look inside for the real spiritual validation from your Real Self/Moksh. And validation from fellow humans is very dangerous, it is erratic, changeable, un-predictable and volatile.

Back to physical life, if Venus is not in a position to give good results in your horoscope you face an inner sense of invalidation. ‘Un-worthiness’ is created. The only way to get out of this crippling feeling is to understand that you have to first realise your own self-worth! If you can generate this sense of approval, value, worthiness and appreciation for yourself at your deepest emotional/psychological levels this is forever.

If you analyse your marriage and your relationship with your loved one, you will realise that you both basically make each other feel ‘worthy’. Talking, romantic dinners, movies, travelling together, physically touching, gifts, flowers and jewellery is a way that we offer validation to our loved one and expect the same validation in return. If we do not receive this in return we get dissatisfied with the relationship and seek a way out. Else if validation turns into devaluation and criticism we seek to dissolve the partnership. But there is tremendous spiritual and emotional energy in addition to financial, legal and social aspects in this alliance. Thus the dissolution process affects the emotions and spiritual stability of both. So what do you do after this break-up? Search for another human partner for validation or search for your inner worthiness?

In a business partnership also validation exists, the financial statements and the profits you two make together is appreciation and proof of ‘worthiness’. Once this validation is lost eg. the business makes losses you two break the partnership. There is little emotional involvement here so dissolving the partnership consists of wrapping the remaining material, financial and legal issues. Starting with a new business partner or going solo into new ventures next is also comparatively more simple.

So here is Venus the owner of Taurus and Libra. He is not so romantic as he looks. He is a Guru, so he will by the best means possible take you onward on your spiritual journey. He has infinite patience too, so will wait patiently till you ask for his real gifts. Only then will he show you the Ultimate which is behind his facade of beautiful pleasures.

Law in the horoscope

Just like education, law and legal matters are of several types. If you ever need to decipher any question related to ‘law’, check these 3 houses out.

  1. The 7th house is the main house to do with legal and partnership related activities.
  2. The 9th house is the house which deals with the philosophy of law.
  3. The 3rd house is the house of the ability to communicate and personal confidence.

Law in the horoscope

The 7th house

This is the house of legal stuff. Bargains, contracts, partnerships made under the legal regime are seen from here. To present a good argument you will always need a good 7th house. This house allows you to present coherent arguments sourced from the legal texts in court. Here the lawyers do not interpret the law, they quote the different sections/case laws and presents balanced arguments for his client. This is a practical application of the law where one wronged party seeks redress and legal compensation from his partner under the contracts they both had willingly made under the prevailing legal regime.

This house will also cover and out of court settlements via an arbitrator, settlement officer, facilitator, etc. Here too the process is essentially same as in a court room but with a difference. Both parties have decided to accept a third person whose authority they both agree upon, as a mediator. And both want to reach a mutually amicable and acceptable solution. These settings are a bit informal as compared to the courtroom setting.

Now to do a complete analysis of this 7th in terms of legal issues is somewhat like this. You will have to consider all the houses and their results in the perspective of the 7th.

The effects of this house is to change the assets/identity of both the partners through communication of disagreement (8th is 2nd counted from 7th). The people who are involved in resolving the issues are peers, authorities and senior member of the society but they sort of step down. They are the philosophers but they come down to the practical levels to solve your arguments (9th is 3rd from 7th). This brings you stability in the professional relations or emotional stability and comfort in the eyes of the society (10th is 4th from 7th).  The matters of this house often require you to express yourself intelligently and in front of a large audience (11th is 5th from 7th). Also the outcome is losses of enemies, debts, disagreements and enforced/illegal service (12th is 6th from the 7th).

Then all this results in a more balanced and fair expression of your partnership, thus adding to your personal ego (1st is 7th from the 7th). Now often legal issues and court cases result in a a change in your personal resources, may reduce them or increase them (the 2nd is the 8th from the 7th). It is even possible that you may be recognised as a senior or a paternal helpful figure in your local neighbourhood/extended family as a result of your confidence in dealing in legal matters (3rd is 9th from 7th). Now this will spill over in your professional comfort and acumen also; and you will in some ways be a better father to your own biological children (4th is 10 from 7th). If your luck is with you, you might make a mark which will bring you more sources of income (5th is the 11th from the 7th). And finally the loss of balance and unfairness is represented by the placements of the 6th house (6th is the 12th of the 7th).

This sort of analysis may seem quite tedious, but it answers your question completely. If you have a strong 9th house as above, the judges will favour you, if the 2nd house is well placed you will gain money from the legal case etc.

Now the natural 7th sign of the zodiac is Libra and its lord is Venus, so these 2 factors will also influence the matters of the 7th wherever they may be placed in the horoscope. Then how the person feels about legal matters will be seen from the 7th house counted from the moon sign. Analysing these factors will present a complete picture of the legal activities of the 7th house.

The 9th House

Now the 9th house is always the philosophy and the theoretical background. It may not have any real practical use, but it is the foundation on which the practical use rests.

Example, The Parliament deliberates on how new laws are to be made; these are working in the 9th house now. And then these laws are interpreted in the higher courts as a function of the 9th. The nitty-gritties/practical aspects of the case are argued out in the lower courts. In most cases interpretation is not needed here as the laws, case laws and rules are are clear enough. But for a few cases where the lower courts are unable to satisfy the litigants the scene shifts to the higher courts which have been vested with the power of interpretation. These higher courts interpret the existing laws in newer ways to get to a new case law.

This is how the group of paternal figures, peers, patrons and senior scholarly individuals use the philosophy and intent of the law. Here new law is created for a wide section of humanity under the natural ruler of the 9th Jupiter and his sign Sagittarius, the natural 9th sign and its ruler.

The Third house

This house is always important as it describes the personal boldness and the ability to meaningfully communicate. This ability is necessary for every aspect of life and especially in settings where you have to argue. Fight with words! That is one way how the 3rd house is involved in ‘law’.

And second, this house also consists of the practical applications of law in every sense. The rules you have to follow on the road, in your office, even the rules your mom enforces at home is the ‘law’ as defined in this house. Here if you break a rule, no one will drag you to the formal courts. For example, your mom+dad will form an ‘internal committee’ to evaluate your behaviour and then to discipline. This might seem rather low profile and harmless at the time, but will have repercussions the next time you want your allowance increased!

Now the natural 3th sign is Gemini and its lord Mercury so these 2 subtly influence the 3rd wherever they may be placed. Then the emotional context and comfort levels are seen from the 3rd house counted from the moon sign. Analysing these factors will present a complete picture of the legal activities of the 3rd house.

This was the theory on analysing how your legal problems will be resolved and how will every aspect of your chart contribute it. I hope this helps!

Law in the horoscope

Libra and more on interpreting charts

I recently read a comment on Facebook that Libra/Tula is the worst ascendant to have, and this comment was being ‘liked. These sort of immature and unbalanced comments can dishearten genuine aspirants from learning this ancient science of Jyotish. So here is my experience with Libra ascendant. This sign is represented by a balance scale perfectly in balance. Every sort of energy is perfectly balanced by this ascendant.

When you read a horoscope there are two things you must remember. Each house is influenced by two signs.

  1. The sign that is actually occupying it and
  2. The sign of the zodiac which would naturally occupy it.

If the ascendant is Taurus the first house will be influenced by 1.Taurus which is actually rising and 2.Aries the first natural sign of the zodiac. Aries will be the subtle influence overlaid on the expression of Taurus here. Whatever may be the rising sign, Aries will always have a say on the matters of the 1st house wherever it may be located in the chart. The two signs and their traits influence each other and mingle to create the 1st house. Now for every ascendant sign Aries will be placed in different houses too. This placement i.e. house number where Aries is placed will also influence your 1st house characteristics.

Similarly Taurus will always influence the 2nd house in addition the actual sign occupying the 2nd house, and so on till Pisces which will always subtly influence the 12th house.

Libra and more on interpreting charts

So when the ascendant is Libra rising, the 1st house will be influenced by the two signs Libra itself and Aries. Two signs, Libra and the sign exactly opposite it, 180 degrees away Aries both now interact to create the personality. For each and every house the actual sign and the sign exactly opposite it will create the house. Eg, the 2nd house will be a composite of Scorpio and its exact opposite Taurus. Similarly the 3rd is a composite of Sagittarius and Gemini. So on till the 12th house is a composite of Virgo and its opposite Pisces.

It is just like you rent your house to your perfect partner and you take his house on rent yourself. Now both you and this guy are interested in the welfare and maintenance of both these houses. And both these houses are right in front of each other so that both of you check on your actual houses all the time.

I had written a post on how a sign and the sign 180 degrees away from it/opposite to it, are complementary. These two signs are mirror images, both filling each other’s blanks. This is the subtle balance that Libra represents. In every aspect of life denoted by each and every house, the natural sign of that house is placed exactly opposite to that house thus subtly completing the missing bits of actual sign occupying the house. Thus the Balance of Libra. The first house is the 7th sign. The force of personality, conquest, competition etc is tempered with the need to ally, to balance, to partner. Thus you get the balance. The second house is the 8th sign. Here the need to preserve family treasures, home life, party and pleasure, food and drink is tempered with the need to work in secret, putting your assets to use and to transform them, to travel, to meditate and delve deeper into the self. Thus every house is in perfect Balance. There are no extremes.

There is another way that the Balance of Libra works. Each planet is placed in a house which is a composite of the sign occupying it and its mirror image. Eg if there is a Saturn placed in Virgo in the 12th house, it will give a combination result of Saturn in 12th (subtly Pisces too) and Saturn in Virgo (subtly the 6th house too). So its result is a balanced and a well negotiated alliance between so many mirrored forces. No extremes will be allowed here, it will be ultimately very harmonious.

If the ascendant is Aries, the first natural house is the first house. There is no mingling of traits between signs to create the house, thus the expression is ‘pure Aries’. Every house in this chart will express its pure traits, eg the 2nd house will be pure Taurus, 3rd as pure Gemini and so on. So the balance or imbalance of each house is felt even more acutely. The first house Aries will definitely give a force of personality and the 7th Libra will give a sense of relationships. But somewhere this person will come across as overbearing and uncaring, and driving in his own point of view, accepting other’s view points only to perhaps to debate them later.

Now a counter example of unbalance, Virgo ascendant. Here the first house is created by a composite of Virgo itself and subtly Aries. In this chart Aries the first sign will occupy the 8th house. The subtle agent of the entire personality, Aries is in the house of forceful transformations of identity. The entire personality becomes subtly more fluid, prone to sudden traumatic identity changes. It is like the solidity of the first house is subtly submerged in the forceful transformations of the 8th. Also the natural owner of each and every house is placed 8th from this house, giving this same effect of subtle forced traumas in the matters of every house. More, the house is now placed 6th from its natural sign, giving a subtle ‘need to serve’. Another example of typical unbalance is the Scorpio ascendant. Here Aries occupies the 6th house and subtly influences the 1st house from here. The personality is again afflicted by the 6th-8th axis problems of servitude, service, transformations of identity, secrets and catastrophic changes.

But unbalance and balance both are necessary. If everything is balanced and harmonious there would be no incentive to grow and improve. And on the other hand if everything was unbalanced there would be no scope/opportunity to evolve. So there is to be a balance between balance and unbalance itself. Both are necessary.

This is how each house is to be analysed,

  1. the actual sign occupying it, the owner planet and his placement.
  2. the natural sign and its location, occupying planets and aspects also have a subtle influence on it.
  3. the axis between the actual and natural signs also has its say.

So in conclusion Libra is a good, balanced and harmonious ascendant to have! Analysing charts is intelligently comparing aspects and influences, subtle and gross both. Sticking on just one characteristic of a planet or sign will lead to lopsided and inaccurate readings. Give time to each chart and reading and try to analyse it in a wholistic manner without pre-judgement and pre-conceptions. Every chart is different, and every individual unique!
