Thoth Tarot and personal growth

I was asked to write something on Tarot so I wrote one post on how to interpret a relationship spread here. I am using brief straightforward meanings, not esoteric ones, as these posts are meant for you to get interested and if possible learn Tarot. I suggest, “The Crowley Tarot: The Handbook to the Cards” by Hajo Banzhaf. (Later if you can, do read books written by Aleister Crowley to get the esoteric stuff. Then your readings will gain more depth. And of course practice is essential.)

Thoth Tarot and personal growth

I really started learning Thoth Tarot after the most emotionally hurtful incident in my life. Someone (a brother) whom I love deeply (still) and consider to be my home, argued with me to such levels that I left his house literally crying. Despite knowing Jyotish, despite knowing that this was to happen today, I had to go through that event. Some karma cannot be avoided. Words, either said aloud or left unsaid, damage relationships beyond repair (which then have to be made up in future lives). That was the lowest emotional point of my life. So rather than feeling upset all the time, I decided to brush up on Tarot. I like Aleister Crowley’s horoscope, a genius and his Thoth Tarot is magic.

The Thoth has a visual impact which no other deck has. The esoteric symbols on the cards trigger things from the sub-conscious mind/ inner self and bring forward the exact information needed. Every card is intricate and intense. When you shuffle and spread out the cards, the energy of the moment makes you focus on some aspects of the cards which you then interpret. The Reader reads the Tarot from his own perspective and the energy of the moment drives him. The client should not take a photograph of the spread to another Reader and ask him to interpret it. If the client wishes for a second opinion he should ask the other Reader to shuffle and lay out the cards again. The cards modulate themselves as per the Reader’s capacity. Tarot indicates the truth of the matter. If you have a card in front of you and remember something, it is because the card wanted to show you this image. You cannot ‘unsee’ whatever flashed in your mind. The impact is visual and on the energy levels. You are made to understand something about the situation, you may like it or not.

I am emphasising this as Thoth Tarot cards are magic, you are shown what you need to see. The cards have an intelligence of their own. Aleister Crowley had performed occult rituals over the cards and infused them with some things ‘magic’. (I have seen only one other deck with such energies, the New Orleans Voodoo Tarot with the energies of the African gods infused in them, ultra-intense, handle-with-care.)

Thoth Tarot should ideally be used as a tool for self-development. Here I am sharing a reading I did for myself a few days ago. It was my Sat-guru’s 115th birth anniversary and I was missing him very much. He is always available to me at every moment, but sometimes I wish I could talk/see him live like earlier. I use the Tarot to talk to him, I like seeing the cards he shows me.

So for my blessing/ guidance, I got the Ace of Cups, The Lovers, The Star.

Ace of Cups is the burst of Divine Love. My Sat-Guru poured over me the highest benediction of his compassion, his infinite kindness. Rejuvenation and healing (I was going through a karma from my past, my astral body was suffering). An assurance that my sorrows will be converted to spiritual love (Ketu in Sagittarius bringing painful karmic stuff from my past, with the associated grief). A reminder to increase my spiritual practice. To trust him, the Highest Intelligence and let him fill my heart with that what he can give, ie the essence of the Non-Dual. This card brought genuine joy to my soul.

The Lovers Trump no.6. I have briefly mentioned about the Lovers card in this post. But this reading is about self-discovery so the interpretation will be slightly different. This meant that he, the Eternal Intelligence, loves me (I was very unloved at that time). I will find my deepest one-one relationship with my own self. I have to focus on what I desire to achieve it. A reminder to increase my spiritual practice, my Soham mantra, to walk my path with conviction. The strength to resolve my own internal dualities (I was deeply conflicted internally). He granted me the energy of unconditional love and the ability to choose what to do with this energy. (There is always some free will, even if the options are limited, you can still choose to some extent. This is the essence of the Game of Creation, Lila, everyone chooses to either create more karma or to stop creating karma)

The Star, Trump no. 17. I have written about the Star card in this post. It shows the Prakruti creating the manifested universes from the Eternal energy. The realised souls depicted by butterflies are shown moving out from the created worlds. Both evolution/Pravrutti and involution/Nivrutti is depicted beautifully. The energy of this card is Hope. To give someone Hope is the greatest gift possible. In the spiritual context, I was again told in the gentlest possible way to concentrate on the universal love. To trust my Sat-guru and that I will achieve my deepest desire. He knows the difficult times I have gone through in my past and he encourages me to be happy. Things are brighter as he will guide me to Myself. (The Star is in sequence after the no. 16 Tower, Tower indicates complete destruction. After complete destruction, Hope arises).

Love relationships and the Moon signs

Life is karma, if you have given out love you will get it back. If you have hurt someone, it will also be returned to you. No one is exempt from this law.

For me, ‘past’ does not mean just this life’s past. The past months since the 26th Dec solar eclipse have been quite traumatic as it is. But I also remember so very many of my past lives, work, incidents, debts, decisions the repercussions, my deaths etc with the emotional/ visual contexts. I know several of my past identities, my families, the places I was born/lived/died, my several past names, Gurumohini, Putala, Jagat, Jan-Prosper etc. Some truly horrific things which happened to me which very few suffer through, intense pain. I see my own mistakes due to which others suffered, regrets. My actions taken in in good faith rebounding on others and on myself, betrayals and hurts. Someone whom I loved with all my heart, I could do anything for him/her, but possibly he/she loved me too but never could trust me, unrequited love. Someone whom I trusted betrayed me and my people, so much to make up to so many people. I know these people from back then and also who they are now around me, new faces but with the same aura/energy.

I have a very powerful Ketu in my current life, he grants me all my psychic and intellectual abilities. More than my superbly placed ascendant lord, more than my Yogkarak, Ketu rules over my life. His energies always trigger stuff from the Past for me, the unbalanced stuff which I have to balance now, I have no option on this. This unrolling of karma started in real earnest when I met my husband, the only love of my lives, in my Ketu-Rahu-Rahu Vimshottari period. And became even more intense when I met someone from several lives with loads of mutually pending karma, during my Venus-Rahu-Ketu Vimshottari period.

Some people think seeing past lives is exciting and romantic, believe me it is not. It is an unfinished business which you have to complete now. Causes severe turmoil on the emotional, astral, physical levels. You rarely see events from the past which made you happy. You are always shown your unfinished work, the karmic debts you owe others. It is karma demanding rebalance and it gets very exhausting.

My Sat-Guru was a Jivan-Mukt, he had realised the Nirvishesh Brahma so was Parabrahma himself. He is the pure Advaita and every guidance/ blessing he gives can be nothing but the Advaita, even if I tell him to speak in the language of the Thoth tarot. So when I ask my Sat-guru and pull out cards with the intention that this is his guidance and blessing, I do get truly magical cards. The very act of pulling them out and seeing them changes the energies around me. Hopefully this 3 card intense reading, ending in the Star Trump is my Sat-guru telling me that the past is truly over.

Every divination tool teaches you to trust the higher power, the inner self. Make sense of what is happening to you. Helps letting go, leaving things to karma, removing yourself from that binding of hurt. Trust the Sat-guru the Advaita. I had written about forgiveness. Sometimes in life you are put in such situations where you are required to forgive someone who does not understand what hurt his words/actions did to you. If you learn a divination method do use it as a means for self-development. Try to remain dispassionate during the reading so that you can reach the truth of the situation. Avoid pre-conceived ideas during this process of self-discovery. If you at least know why things are like this, maybe you can reconcile yourself better to the situation.

Thoth Tarot and personal growth

Jupiter, Mercury, Saturn combust in Sagittarius

Jupiter will get combust on 14th Dec 2019 till 10th Jan 2020. Jupiter within 11 degrees to Sun is considered combust. He is ‘evaporated’ by the harshness of the Sun. The Sun ‘absorbs’ the power of Jupiter and becomes a composite Jupiter+Sun. This period is however complicated by the fact that, Mercury (24th Dec to 25th Jan) and Saturn (28th Dec to 30th Jan) too will get combust together.

In addition to all this, is the solar eclipse of 26th Dec 2019 and the lunar eclipse of 10th Jan 2020. When Ketu and Sun overlap, it becomes an eclipse of the Sun not a ‘combustion of Ketu’. And when the Sun and Moon overlap, it is not said to be a ‘combustion of the Moon’ but the no-moon night or the Amavasya. So much is happening, literal explosions of energy in Dec-2019 and Jan 2020!

The ‘Sun-energy’ in the sky, during these days, is not the pure Sun as he usually is. He is going to be a blend of so many energies, (combustions, eclipses, amavasya) during this period. So many planets combust at the same time! The best way of balancing this composite-Sun’s energies during this period is to offer energised water to the Sun, this is called an ‘Arghya’. I have written about it in this post. If you can offer arghya to the Sun, do it, it will act as an easy remedy.

While Jupiter is combust (or Venus is combust), Indians will not perform any auspicious ceremonies like marriage or buying/selling property, investments, or heavy-duty pujas, setting up new business etc. We can only plan these things during this period, but not perform them. Jupiter and Venus are the two Guru-s, if one of them is missing or unable to give his full guidance, then the rituals, auspicious activity etc will not give its full results. Sagittarius and to a lesser extent Pisces are facing challenging times. Jupiter getting combust in his own sign affects these two the most.

Mercury will enter Sagittarius and go combust too. Generally Mercury-Jupiter in Sagittarius should have given excellent results but now this will affect businesses, gold-prices, stocks, for students exams will be difficult, making a decision can get difficult, selfishness will prevail. Ketu and Saturn are two malefics affecting them, so things will seem turbulent. Sagittarius’ environment helps smooth out issues, but the quantum of turbulence is too great this time.

Saturn combust makes the world suddenly harsher. Your past karma are up for rebalancing in an aggressive way. You might get caught in arguments, your profession will require more work, luck will be down, family especially aged parents will need more attention, there will be quarrels with the father/boss. Sun is Saturn’s father and they do not get along with each other. Now Sun and Saturn so close to each other will add discomfort in your life too. You might feel alone and there will be emotional stress.

You can do personal spiritual practice, visit temples, perform some family pujas, give charity etc, these things do help. And get a health check-up, the combust planets together indicate your body frame, bones, ligaments, teeth, eyes, sense organs, nerves, fat, sugar, etc, so if you feel something is wrong consult a doctor. Try to keep your finances in budget. Follow your Dharma, do not attempt short-cuts or try to evade your duty. All this is happening in Sagittarius, Jupiter’s sign and Jupiter himself is here, so things will be a bit better, but do not take unnecessary risks.

In general, people born in the signs owned by Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury and Leo/ Cancer too, will feel the heat. These signs are in the middle of the whirlwind and will find relief only after Jan 2020. If you can use these times, it will create a life-time asset, else the potential for problems exists. And whatever is signified by the Gemini-Sagittarius axis in your birth chart will take a hit, because of the tremendous energy release here.

Now open your birth chart and check if these planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury were are combust in your birth chart, or you were born on an Amavasya or Full-moon day/pournima. If so, you should take extra precautions and think positively. Try to keep a healthy life style, get enough rest, avoid intoxicants and do some regular spiritual practice. Generally such combust, eclipse etc events occur routinely, but this time so many planets are caught in this axis, it is going to have effects on almost everyone. Pay more attention to your behaviour and take care if,

  • The combust planets are transiting the 8th house from your Moon sign or Ascendant, ie those with Taurus Moon sign/ascendant sign take care of yourself.
  • If you are undergoing a Mahadasha/main period or Antardasha/ sub period of any of the combust planets. Check your Vimshottari dasha section in your Vedic astrology software.
  • If your birth Moon is placed in a Nakshatra owned by the combust planets (check the list in this post)
  • If your ascendant lord is combust.

On the positive side, Venus in Capricorn is generally well-placed to give good results. Mars is in Libra and will then move in Scorpio during this period, so we can expect average to good results from him too.

These 2 months are not a good time to plan a baby. If you are already pregnant, then be very careful during the actual eclipse times. Two eclipses are coming up. Eclipses are very trying times for pregnant women. If you are living in an area where the eclipse is going to be visible, the best thing you can do during these few hours, is to sit at home, not go out, not sleep nor eat/drink nor do any housework. Just sit in front of your puja ghar/ altar and mentally recite some mantra for the duration of the eclipse. If you are due for delivery, talk to your doctor and avoid giving birth during the actual eclipse time. It can lead to complications and the baby will have an eclipse in his birth chart which would be quite problematic.

For all of us, try to follow the internal conscience. All actions taken during this period will have long terms repercussions. Avoid taking impulsive decisions, be patient and only then decide, especially marriages, divorces, finances, business deals, think logically. You might get tempting offers during this period but think before you act. And take care of your health.

Kundalini, an overview

Eclipses in the horoscope, birth and transit analysis

Eclipses happen quite rarely. There are maximum 2-3 solar eclipses and maybe 3-4 lunar eclipses in a year. Most of them are partial eclipses and total eclipses are rarer. The actual occultation of the solar/ lunar disc lasts just for a few hours, and even if we also consider a ‘vedh’ period before and after the actual occultation, this ‘vedh’ too lasts for a few hours. So the total eclipse energies last for a maximum of one day.

Eclipses in the horoscope, birth and transit analysis

So you will get a very rare client who has actually been born during an eclipse.

This is a very intense conjunction of Rahu/ Ketu with the Sun/ Moon, on a Full moon/ No moon day. The energies of the full / no moon are quite intense in the first place and then you have Rahu /Ketu added to this potent mix. The energies of the eclipse event generally affect the horoscope adversely. This is a life-time of imbalance as the energies of the Sun/ Moon, the two luminaries of the horoscope are conjoint the energies of desire and dissociation, at birth! The flow of the life experience is very intensely linked to the mind/ individual soul for the entire life-time.

In an eclipse event, primarily two houses of the chart are affected, one in which Rahu is placed and the other 180deg way where Ketu is be placed. Check which houses are being affected, eg if the houses are the 1st – 7th or the 4th – 10th, then the foundation of the personality itself is intensely affected. In whichever pair of houses the eclipse occurs, these both houses suffer. The two signs placed in these two houses also naturally suffer the imbalance. If there are more planets in addition to the Sun/ Moon, conjunct the Rahu/ Ketu, then the results are even more severe as these planet’s energies are also drawn into the vortex of Rahu/ Ketu. Check if there are more planets in the 15 deg zone before and after the Rahu/ Ketu. The keywords of these planets too will be affected. If it were Rahu then there might be short-lived gains from these planets, and if it is Ketu involved then it will give misfortunes linked to these other planet’s keywords.

There are dramatic upheavals and downturns in the matters associated with these houses, signs and planets. This can rarely give sudden fortunes and but more commonly gives sudden misfortunes throughout the life time of the individual as the birth itself was during an eclipse.

Lunar eclipses occur on full moon nights. The shadow of the Earth falls on the lunar disc. Lunar eclipses are more frequent and also last longer than solar eclipses as the shadow of the Earth is much bigger than the Moon’s disc. Here one of the nodes will be with the Sun and the other with the Moon, 180deg apart. In this situation the house occupied by the Moon suffers more deeply than the Sun’s house. There may be indications of unregulated occult abilities, sensitivity to the other dimensions, emotional imbalances, etc. This can go to the extremes of paranoia, hallucinations and insanity. Or in the other extreme can grant spiritual and occult understanding. These individuals will be, in any case, different and not very able to function normally in regular society. There will be problems in relationships with the mother, father and the spiritual Guru. Such people may be orphans, adopted, raised by relatives/ institutions/ orphanages etc.

Solar eclipses occur on no moon days – Amavasya. The orb of the Moon occults the solar disc. The solar eclipses are relatively less frequent than the lunar eclipses and are shorter in duration, the Moon’s shadow is apparently the exact size of the Sun’s disc. Here both Sun and the Moon will be with one of the nodes in one house and the other node will be 180deg away.

Here are some keywords you can build your analysis,

  • Moon with Rahu – psychic, occult, has a strong mind, headstrong, unending desire to experience, emotional disturbances, irrational fears and phobias, disturbed mental state. No control over emotions and actions that one performs in the other realms. If channelised properly can be a very high level tantrik, occultist spiritual aspirant. If not then the mind may crack with the endless desire to experience more and more.
  • Moon with Ketu – occult, psychic, there will problems created by ghosts, hauntings, fear, there is inherent cruelty in the nature. If these energies are not given a safe channel, this person can get actually dangerous for himself and also for others.
  • Sun with Rahu – self centered behaviour, focus on the self, selfish, arrogant, fascinated by the bizarre, likes foreign stuff, materialistic, outspoken, revolutionary. If channelised properly can actually lead rebellions against established customs, regimes and thought processes. Else a liability to the society.
  • Sun with Ketu – This can grant high spiritual growth as is a combination of detachment and self-awareness, ego and ego-less-ness, selfish and selflessness. This is a combination of opposites coupled with the energy and desire to act, yet to not be attached to the fruits of the action! Else there are the darker aspects of lack of self-confidence, confused intelligence and lack of will to express and act.

Another way of looking at eclipses, is to see which node was involved in the actual occultation event.

  • Lunar eclipse – Sun and Moon are 180 deg ie opposite each other
    • Rahu occulting the Moon will give Rahu-Moon effect more than the Sun-Ketu effect
    • If it was Ketu with the Moon, then Ketu-Moon will have more power than the Sun-Rahu effect.
    • The effect on the Moon will be more drastic than the effect on the Sun
  • Solar eclipse – Sun and Moon are exactly together with either Rahu or Ketu
    • If Rahu has occulted Sun+Moon then the eclipse will show the dominance of Rahu on both the Sun and the Moon.
    • Similarly if it was Ketu occulting the Sun+Moon, then Ketu will affect both the Sun and the Moon
    • Solar eclipses are more dangerous than lunar eclipses, as both the Sun/ Moon, mind, body and individual soul, are heavily affected.

These are extreme results as the birth is during an eclipse. Again you will get very few clients of this sort.

Eclipses in the horoscope, birth and transit analysis

I have seen that people who were born around a Total eclipse event are also likely to be different. Or if someone was born when a series of eclipses were occurring back-to-back. You might get some clients of this sort. Let’s see why they can be different.

A bit of math. Rahu/ Ketu are not physical objects in the sky but mathematically calculated points where the orbit of the Moon cuts the ecliptic. Imagine two circles of same size, but tilted to each other, cutting each other. They will intersect at two points, these two points are called Rahu/ Ascending node/ North node and Ketu/ descending node/ South node. The Rahu/ Ketu points also move, their normal movement is backwards/ retrograde. This movement is averaged out to give you an averaged out position of the nodes and this is called a ‘Mean Node’. The Rahu/ Ketu in your software will give this averaged out calculated value. The normal direction for the movement of the nodes is retrograde, the averaged out ‘mean node’ value is always retrograde.

Now if you do not average out their movement, you check their actual position, this is now called the ’True node’. And sometimes this ‘true node’ reverses direction, it moves in the forward direction. This happens around major total eclipses and when there are a series of eclipses back-to-back. (Check their position from 11th July to 10th Aug 2019, the true nodes are in forward motion, there was a total solar eclipse and also a solar and lunar eclipse event back to back). This makes the person born during this period very different. So if your software shows an option of ‘True nodes’, check what was their motion at your birth time. If it was retrograde at your birth time, it was the usual normal. But if the true nodes were moving forward at the time of birth, then you are different, you process your life experiences differently.

Eclipses in the horoscope, birth and transit analysis

Then the second way of analysing eclipses is when they occur from time to time. If there is a eclipse coming up you can try this,

Open your birth horoscope. Now draw the positions of the currently transiting planets over it. Use a different colored pen so that you do not get confused. (If you have understood the Ashtakvarga method of analysing their results, do this also.) Check the sign occupied by the Sun/ Moon and Rahu/ Ketu at the time of the ongoing eclipse. Check which houses these two sign occupy in your birth chart.

  • Suppose this current eclipse occurs in your 1st – 7th house pair, it will affect your person environment and relationships. If in the 4th – 10th houses then your home and office will be targeted. These 4 houses are the foundations of your life so we give them more importance. These are the Kendra houses. So the houses and the signs in the eclipse axis are affected.
  • If there are other planets in this axis, in your birth chart then they too will be affected by the eclipse energies.
  • Now if there is some planet currently transiting within the 15 deg zone ahead and behind Rahu/ Ketu they too also be affected and their results in transit will be modified.

Now for how long will the effect last? Check the time the eclipse was visible in your city. (If it was not visible then you needn’t worry, it will have negligible effect.)

  • The general rule is that for solar eclipses, the number of hours it lasted equals the number of years. So if the solar disc was occulted for 30 mins, ie the interval between the first touch to the complete release of the solar disc, visible in your city, was 30mins, the effect will last for 6 months.
  • For lunar eclipses, the first touch of the earth’s shadow to the complete release of the lunar disc, is the time of occultation, one hour of eclipse gives its effect for one month. eg if it was for 2 hours for your city, the effect on you will last for 2 months.

(E.g. the 2nd July 2019 total Solar eclipse had Rahu with Moon, Sun and Venus in Gemini, in addition Mars and Mercury were in Cancer within 15deg ahead of Rahu. And on the other side, Ketu, Saturn in Sagittarius. Only Jupiter was left out of this mix. This eclipse was visible in South America, especially Argentina and Chile. The political situation here is quite evident from the news. It must have affected a significant chunk of the population, on various levels here. And its added influence in Antarctica has dramatically increased the ice-melt rates. The eclipse’s effect on South America in general will wear out in less than 1year. But its effect on the Pacific sea, its ecosystem, the ice on the seas next to Antarctica can last upto 5 yrs. The eclipse was caused by Rahu in Gemini, this is the available options plus how we choose to think and act, too many options and over-reaching desire to act to grasp. Sagittarius with Ketu so detachment from the higher philosophy, humanity, lawful foundations and hope! This was a very complex eclipse which affected almost all the planets and the entire zodiac in all possible ways.)

Eclipses in the horoscope, birth and transit analysis

So what to do during an eclipse?

If you were born in an eclipse, the period following the eclipse (in months or years) will be karmically heavy duty for you. Every eclipse in the year has the potential to create violent, sudden ups and downs in life for you. Then during the brief period of the actual eclipse, you will feel your perceptions open very wide, you will feel ‘normal’! So use this time very wisely. Prepare for this in advance, eat light food in advance and fast during the eclipse. Do mantra-jaap of Rahu/ Ketu or Sun/ Moon compulsorily. Then if you can do some spiritual practice, ie Dhyan. If you can do this near a flowing waterbody, river or sea it will be best, stand or sit with your feet dipped in it.

Or you have your True Nodes in your birth chart in the forward direct motion. During the eclipses so the same activity as above. Plus look out for the period when the transit true nodes will be in forward direct motion. This period will vary from 10 – 30 days around the total or back-to-back eclipses. You will feel a sudden shift in the energies around you, the mind will be clearer, the experiences around you will be ‘brighter’. Use this period for doing intensive mantra-jaap and spiritual practice, you will gain so very much.

Eclipses are power packets of tremendous energies. Use every single drop of these for your spiritual progress!

Timing death for close relations

Sometimes you will get clients whose parents or near relations are seriously ill and they do not have the correct birth time available. So of course you will use the prashana kundali to analyse the health and recovery of the client’s relative. But sometimes it can be serious and you may see no chance of recovery. Predicting death in clear words is never advisable unless you are very sure, as it can break down the will power of the family/patient. Or later there might be doubts in your own mind if you did the correct thing by telling them what you saw.

Here is a simple way to recheck your grim predictions. So you do not have the birth details of the patient, and the prashana kundali indicates death. But you have the exact birth time of the patient’s son/daughter/brother/spouse. Look up this relative’s chart and find out which Mahadasha/ Antardasha and current transits are on for this relative.

The rulers of the 2nd and 7th houses counted from the ascendant are called the natural marak /death-inflicting planets and determine the timing of physical death of the body. If we count this second and seventh houses from other houses, then their owners can be used to indicate timing of death of the close relations signified by these houses.

Timing death for close relations

First using the Vimshottari system,

Spouse – Period of the ruler of the 1st house can cause death of the spouse. The 1st house is located seventh from the 7th house which represents the spouse. Also the period of the ruler of the 8th house of the native’s chart. (8th is second from 7th)

Mother– Period of the ruler of the 5th house can indicate the death of the mother. The 5th house is counted second from the 4th house. Also the period of the ruler of the 10th house (10th house is counted seventh from the 4th house).

Father – Period of the ruler of the 4th house can cause death of the person’s father. It is seventh counted from the 10th house. The 10th is the house of the father. Also the period of the ruler of the 11th house can be used for timing death of the biological father. (Some consider the 9th house to be the house of the father, but I have found that the 9th is more apt for father-figures, teachers, Guru/second-father/spiritual-father, ancestors, patrons etc. The biological father is better seen from the 10th house).

Siblings – Period of the ruler of the 4th house can cause death of the siblings, cousins, brothers. The 4th house is the second counted from the 3rd house. And the period of the ruler of the 9th house (counted seventh from the 3rd house).

Children – Unfortunately this also happens sometimes, parents have to go through the pain of seeing a child leave the body. In this case birth time would be available so you can check for longevity from the child’s chart itself. But as a secondary confirmation, you will find that in the parent’s charts, the 6th and 11th house lords periods/sub-periods can indicate the death of a child.

Now from the transits,

Check out the transits of the biggest separative graha, Ketu and the agent of constriction Saturn. e.g. Last year, Ketu was in Capricorn, counted fourth from Libra. I observed 3 clients with Libra ascendants bidding farewell to their mothers in this period of 1.5yrs. So check if you have Saturn or Ketu transiting houses which indicate close relations as per your birth chart, e.g. 1st house = self, 3rd = siblings, 4th = mother, 5th = children, 7th = wife/husband, 10th = father. Then check the chart of that person for longevity, if he has neared his/her allotted life-span, then death of the body might occur. If not then this combination will give temporary separation, e.g. living away for studies or work etc.

While analysing, look for patterns which repeat, one single combinations does not make a reading. There will be at least 2-3 combinations which will confirm the reading.

Timing death for close relations

(These are just a few tips to get you interested in analysis. No event occurs in isolation, all are interconnected. Always keep a database of your and extended family’s charts with you so that you can learn as events happen in their lives.)

Chidra Dasha the closure part 1

I have written on how to go about analysing the periods according to the Vimshottari dasha system earlier. It is most common, used for timing the events, like birth of a child or death of the body, which are predicted from your birth chart. The 120 years of the human life are assigned to the 9 planets/graha and then each main period (mahadasha) is further divided into sub-periods (antardasha) and further sub-sub-periods till every single day of your life is mapped out.

Of particular importance is the final sub-period (antardasha) of every planet’s main period (mahadasha), this last phase is called the chidradasha. In this final sub-period you release all the stuff related to the current mahadasha and get ready for the next planet’s mahadasha in the sequence.

Two planets play an important role in this chidradasha period, first is the ruler of the Mahadasha/main-period and second is the ruler of the sub-period/Antardasha. Now you will have to first understand,

  1. the real nature of these 2 planets, this is relatively easy from the basic keywords.
  2. then you will need to know what all these 2 planets stand for in your chart, i.e. their ‘karakatva‘. Your basic birth chart D-1 will give you the physical manifested context. Counting from the birth moon sign will indicate the emotional context. And if you have the exact birth time, you can draw the 9th divisional chart, Navamsha, to get the subconscious undercurrents.
  3. And finally how these 2 planets are placed in relation to each other, will determine their dynamics. If they are placed 6th- 8th from each other they will be out of balance and cause more problems.

This is the most important step in analysis, take your time over this. The charts will tell you ‘what’ you have, the dasha will then tell you ‘when’ and ‘how’ this will happen.

Chidra Dasha the closure part 1

The Ketu Mahadasha (detailed post) lasts for 7 years, its last sub-period of 12 months belongs to Mercury. Ketu is the agent of spirituality, Moksh, dissociation from the material, etc. Wherever he is linked to in your horoscope, you will be apathetic to the concerns of that house/sign. During his period you will want to attain spiritual progress and an internal detachment from the material. You will ‘wander through spirituality’, search for a Guru, maybe explore different spiritual concepts, try out different practices, perhaps go on pilgrimages, read books on esoteric stuff etc. He will orient you as per his position in your chart and give you results depending on his ‘karakatva’. All through these 7yrs, Ketu will be the undercurrent flowing in your life.

Ketu is in perpetual retrograde motion so rewinds and replays the experiences of your life so that you can extract the maximum learning from it. Ketu’s periods are thus very intense on the psychological and inner spiritual levels.

When you reach the last sub-period, you will cut your losses and consolidate the overall gains from your Ketu. Depending on the ‘karakatva’ of Mercury in your chart, he will systematically dismantle the Ketu persona of these 7 years and help create your Venus persona which will last for the next 20yrs. He will analyse and systematically organise all that you have learnt and will cut off all those failed attempts at learning Ketu‘s lessons. Ketu’s periods are always abstract, but Mercury will bring it all to a focus during his Ketu-Mercury chidradasha and you might actually teach, or be vocal, or write, in any way actually organise Ketu’s randomness and lessons with Mercury’s help. You might feel that the past 7 years suddenly making ‘sense’ now.

During your Ketu mahadasha, however spaced out you may feel, you will have to make some efforts to gain some skills, practical knowledge and actually do it too. Just being hazy will make this last chidradasha difficult to consolidate.

As your Ketu mahadasha ends, your Venus mahadasha will start. If you have managed to lay down a good ground work for your spirituality or if your chart has the potential, Venus will take you on in his real form of Daitya-Guru, he will push you onwards on your spiritual path. If not, then he will take you into a 20yr period of material pleasures, love, romance, hoarding treasures, song and dance. More details will depend on the karakatva of Venus in your chart, his power and ability to give results.

(Specifically for Libra ascendant, Venus is the ruler of the 8th house. Thus the first sub-period of Venus Mahadasha, ruled by Venus himself, will catastrophically change your expectations of the external relationships and treasures and make you go deeper within yourself.)

Chidra Dasha the closure part 1

The Venus Mahadasha (detailed post) which lasts for 20 yrs, has the last sub-period belonging to Ketu, this chidradasha lasts for 26 months.

Venus the owner of Taurus and Libra represents beauty, balance, fairness, treasures, relationships etc at every level. His Mahadasha is the longest at 20yrs and often represents significant periods in your life. During these 20yrs you will engage very deeply with others, the society at all levels, professional, emotional, legal, inter-personal interactions, maybe get married, have children, job, etc so many things depending on your chart. But remember this Mahadasha ends in the last sub-period of Ketu, the agent of dissociation. Ketu will in his apathetic way cut through all the material stuff that your Venus persona has created, leaving just the spiritual and the psychic with you.

Thus it is very important that you do some spiritual practice which brings you closer to yourself throughout the Venus Mahadasha. Else this last sub-period of Ketu will cause extreme alienation, separation and detachment coupled with despair from the material stuff that you have been after during the Venus main period. It will be a hazed out separative period, as you drift away from your Venus persona. There will be no clear cut understanding of what was achieved or not, just an internal sense that that the material that one tries to hold on to is unsubstantial. You may drift into spiritual practice or become unavailable to your loved ones as you realise that validation and real love from another human being is really not possible.

And finally because he is Ketu, he does not complete the job at hand! His Venus-Ketu chidra dasha does not allow complete separations. He will detach you physically. But you will retain a deeply intimate bond with all the treasures and relationships that Venus gave you, as an undercurrent throughout your life now onwards. But you will have to understand though you may long for those material pleasures again, that phase is over. Use your learnings and experiences from this period to find your internal treasures, else you will remain with regret.

After Venus’ Mahadasha ends, starts the Sun’s main period which lasts for 6yrs. At the end of this period you will experience the last sub-period, the chidra dasha which belongs to Venus. This period lasts for 12 months.

Sun’s periods are characterised by the individual self, self-creativity, self- intelligence, self-progress, self-recognition, self-power, self-success, self-entitlement, will and intention. Depending on the Karakatva of Sun in your chart, you will be granted opportunities to grow in the material or spiritual directions. Your Sun persona will be very individualistic, self-referential and with self-ego to a great extent. And the last sub-period/chidradasha is of Venus, who indicates balanced relationships and hoarding treasures. So there will be conflicts of two sorts, one is Venus will consolidate learnings related to partnering and equitable behaviour, which is sort of antithetical to the Sun persona. And second this is supposed to be the chidra-dasha, the sub-period of separation and closure from the Sun persona, but Venus will, in his desire to hoard and balance relationships, not let this separation happen so easily.

You have been self-focussed for all these years, now at least appreciate those others whose efforts assisted you in your way. Also recognise that there were some aspects of your personality, habits, behaviour, relationships, partnerships etc which were actually draining you, were a disappointment. Now is the time to release them, not with regrets but with understanding and balance.

Also during this Sun’s main-period try to keep your relationships and actions more on the intelligence level or on clearly defined give-take levels rather than needy-emotional levels.

From this Sun’s main period you are now moving towards the Moon’s Mahadasha of 10yrs. So evaluate the emotional significance of Sun and Venus in your chart, counted from the birth moon. This assessment will be important as your Moon’s mahadasha will take off from this foundation.

(For Libra ascendants, this period can be quite traumatic as Venus rules the ascendant and the 8th both. Accepting the contradiction of a stable personality coupled with catastrophic changes in the personality, which will be related to divine intelligence and every sort of gains will be a task. Then Aries ascendant too suffers in a strange way, Venus here rules the 2nd and 7th houses, the Marak, who can decide the time for physical death has arrived. Detailed results will depend on individual charts.)

(Will continue this in my next post.)
