Arth Trikon of the horoscope

The 12 houses of the horoscope are divided into the Dharma Trikon, houses 1, 5 and 9. The Arth Trikon houses 2, 6 and 10. The Kama Trikon houses 3, 7 and 11 and the Moksh Trikon houses 4, 8 and 12.

The finances of a chart can be accurately predicted using the Arth Trikon, the Triangle of Finances. These are the houses number 2, 6 and 10 counted from the ascendant. These houses will give the physical environments and tangible effects related to making money and earning your income. If you count these same 2, 6, and 10 from your birth moon sign they will provide an indicator on how you feel about your finances, your perceptions about money and the means of earning wealth. And your divisional chart 9/Navamsha will indicate the potential and the astral expectations regarding finance.

Arth is a Sanskrit word thus has several meanings including – true sense, objects of desire, concerns and senses. So though we consider the Arth trikon in the narrow sense of finances it includes all your significant possessions.

At the deepest levels these 3 houses are the places where you search for the real meaning of your existence.

The Second House

The 2rd house from the ascendant is the house of family resources. Kutumbh/family and Dhana/wealth is the 2nd house. The natural ruler of this house is Venus, as Taurus is the second sign of the Zodiac. Venus is the Lord of Treasuries and Sensual Pleasures here. Food, drink, speech, beauty, songs and stories are in his domain. Time spent with your family and friends. Your memory, knowledge and flair for business is seen from here.

You search for the meaning of your life in the treasures you collect, the fun times you spend.

This is the first interaction that you have with wealth and its role. Do you have access to your family’s treasury, its assets and warehouses? Your position in your extended family and neighbourhoods is naturally dependent on your family’s financial status. Here you are taught how to make money, conserve it, multiply it and also to spend it. Accounting, balance sheets, banking and inventories. All sorts of moveable assets, monies and material, are governed by this house. Often this is the seed capital on which you start your own local small business.

An analysis of this house tells a lot. Several families contribute their assets and resources to create a common land of comfort and security. Local trades and interactions of brotherhood create an emotional bonding. These then in turn contribute to even more increase in the wealth of the family treasuries. If this house is strong, you are very comfortable exhibiting your assets, intelligence, genius, creativity and luck. However there is a very real possibility that the wealth and beauty of the 2nd can create a sense of servitude, and you may get trapped in these external objects. These also have the potential to create debts and enemies.

Equitable partnerships are not considered very highly by this house because you are the hoarder, the collector here. Here the desired partner is the one who can increase and transform your treasures dramatically, often in secret. The theories and philosophies of humanities and your peer groups and patrons have the potential to transform you, but you are wary of them. Rather you look on your father figures as persons who make you work. A strong 2nd grants a deep understanding of the social hierarchies and organisational theories with the core professional competence being in trade and acquisitions. You befriends those who are outside the mainstream, travellers, ascetics and energy-workers who can be of benefit.

And the strangest, the personality itself consumes the resources of the 2nd house. You use the hoarded treasuries indicated by the 2nd house to boost yourself in your society.ground group growth handsThe Sixth house

This is the house of turmoil, dushamsthana. Some consider the 8th or 12th houses to be the worst, my opinion is the 6th is the house where you have the worst experiences of slavery, servitude, debts, diseases and enemies. So how does this relates to your ‘significant possessions’? Simple, this house is where you add to them or even lose them! But the problem is that you may be the doctor or the patient, still you have to be in the depressing environment of the hospital. Serve or suffer.

You search for the meaning of your life in being of service to others. Mercury the natural ruler of the 6th house of the zodiac, Virgo, exerts his influence.

So this house is where you can use the assets given to you in the 2nd creatively and generate wealth for yourself. The environment where you do this may not be very lively but if your 2nd and 6th are both strong you will focus on the wealth generation aspect exclusively. This house profits when there are losses in partnerships and balance in environments of secrecy, catastrophic changes and unforeseeable changes. However here stability is provided in philosophy and in the company of peers, patrons and father figures.

Choose the profession where you can use the energies of this house creatively and gainfully. A overly strong 6th however will reduce your friends and like minded groups. Working too hard I guess, gives no time for speculation and also you wont be able to explore multiple sources for income. You partner best with those who are facing losses on their personality and physical existence. Naturally if you are a doctor your partner from who you gain is the patient! The energies of this house reduce the personality and often you are a faceless cog in the scheme of things. Or on the other hand if your 1st house is also strong enough you can be well-known as a prominent lawyer, doctor or a human rights activist.

The Tenth house

The natural 10th house is Capricorn ruled by Saturn. Here you use the energies of your 6th house creatively to create for yourself social position, social mobility, a profession and a regular income too.

You try to find the real meaning of your life in image you create for yourself in the society and the work you do for the public.

This hard work you put in this house is amply rewarded and you gain financially, materially, spiritually, socially etc, as your interactions with wider groups increase. Your interest in trade/speculation, business-like activities, interactions with your extended family will reduce. The hard work you put in will give comforts and security for your own self. Your personal family will also enjoy the fruits of your labour. As you grow older, you will be more able to balance your professional life and home life.

However working in the defined environment of your profession with an eye out for social acceptability will adversely affect your link to your internal higher self and sources of divine intelligence. Doing good work in the 10th, you will be able to provide support and stability to people who are suffering. A strong 10th house increases reliance on rules, hard work and slow/steady

The trikons are the 5-9 linkages of each other. They represent the creative expressions and deepest philosophies of each other.

  • The 6th is the creative expression of the 2nd, the 10th is the creative expression of the 6th and the 2nd is again the creative expression of the 10th.
  • The 10th is counted 9th from the 2st, the 6th is counted 9th from the 10th and the 2nd is counted 9th from the 6th. Thus they are the foundations of each other.

In horoscope analysis this 5-9 axis is very important. For analysing every house do take into account the placement 5th and 9th from it. This will tell you how the potential assets of that house are converted into visible creative expressions. These visible actions are then again analysed with newer ways of thinking and converted to deep philosophies. i.e. The foundations of the visible existence. This 5-9 cycle is the cycle of evolution of the chart.

Profession astrologically..

Astrology is often used for profession related questions. The 10th house is the house of profession or the Karmasthan. This house is the Zenith, the highest point, and represents the self-respect, honour and pride that you receive from others and also from your own self. It is your power to take action, marital action, your aggression directed to a purpose, ‘manliness!’, the Kshatriya-Kendra.The predominant guna/quality here is Rajoguna, the energy which pulls you towards the objects of desire in this universe and you act for acquiring these objects.workThe 10th house defines your profession in a broad sense. And there are some more factors. What motivates you to take up a profession? You do a job because you like it, you want to do it, maybe you have no other option, you are forced to!, you wish to earn a livelihood etc. Then, will you get the honor and wealth you desire. And are you comfortable with your job. Finally at what level will you work? A clerk or the top boss? Will you do your job diligently and sincerely?

So, when you get a question related to profession, there are a few things you should check out,

  1. The power of your ascendant sign and its planetary lord. Can they give to give positive results? The aspects and planetsinfluencing them. The first house is your body and your environment and the lord of the 1st is the suitability of your body to your environment and likewise.
  2. Then the Moon, the mind and the lens of perception. How comfortable is he and what is his power for giving results. Will you experience happiness and security in your life, the Moon will decide.
  3. The Sun, will decide if you get authority. Will your word be respected? What dignity will you receive in the professional field, is the Sun’s domain.
  4. Then benefic planets should occupy the 1st, 4th, 5th 7th, 9th and 10th(Kendra and Kona) houses as far as possible. Or at least have benefic aspects on these houses.
  5. Malefics are best placed in the 3rd, 6th and the 11th houses, but they should receive aspects from the benefic planets, so that they are restrained from creating conflicts.
  6. It is important that the benefics be more powerful than the malefics. Check out the role of the Yogkarak planets, do they elevate the horoscope?
  7. Now the 9th house and its owner must be strong, well-aspected and comfortable.
  8. The 10th house and also its owner of the 10th house are important as 10th is the actual house of the profession. Find out which planets are occupying the 10th house or if it is empty then who all are aspecting it. If no planet aspects the 10th, then analyse the owner of the 10th house.
  9. If there is a connection between the lords of the 1st, 9th and 10th it will give very high professional success with power and prestige.
  10. A connection between the lords of the 2nd and 11th houses will give excellent results in terms of gains and wealth creation.
  11. If there is a link between the lords of the 4th and 5th, it will grant stability, comfort, security and asset creation linked with creativity and intelligence.
  12. You might think that by now, you have gone through the entire chart. But you cannot examine a house in isolation. There are always patterns. You are examining the entire personality and are required to take a holistic view. E.g. You might see that your client may make good money from a profession but this may adversely impact his health, so you might advise him against taking up this particular profession.

workThat was the basic analysis now let’s check out the professions linked to the planets. See the planets linked to the 10th house.

He understands how to logically reduce such tasks to their units and perform them. Is capable of taking dispassionate and cruel decisions. He understands power of materials and men and can use them effectively. Building and constructions are also linked to him. In depth knowledge of technical subjects, e.g a Mars+Jupiter will give you an excellect astrologer!

Jupiter – He is the Dev-Guru, thus teaches divine languages, Sanskrit, and knowledge of Ved, Vedang including astrology and other scriptures. Finance, humanitarian subjects, philosophy, teacher in Universities or an actual religious guru. Consultants, counsellors, scientists, etc who require high levels of in-depth knowledge coupled with discrimination. He shows the right path thus all the ‘guiding’ professions are linked to him.workSaturn – Traditional studies and knowledge from your home culture and religion, is very orthodox, resistant to change. And finally allows one to ‘pretend’, so can be an excellent spy or a terrorist. He can give gains through exports, spiritualism, animal trading, and dealer in bones, animal carcasses etc.

So look in to your chart and find out what is your inner self wanting to work as!

Using oil for massage and other remedies

Oil of any kind is primarily linked to Saturn, and specifically sesame/til oil is the heathiest one for your body is and the specific ‘item’ of Shani. Now let’s check out some more in the remedies, very simple ones, more acceptable for the general public, So no mantra, yantra, tantra based stuff for now. Check out in your horoscope which planets are placed as follows

  1. Benefic planets if placed in the dushamsthan 6th, 8th or  12th house
  2. Malefic planets in the Kendra 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th houses or the Kona 5th or 9th houses.

If you have any planets like this it is possible that they are adversely affecting your life, so let’s balance out these energies by charity and intention. Giving away items associated with their energies may prove beneficial. The concept is that you owe a debt from your past life which you are paying off now. Do it with a clear heart and intention of karma balance.bowl being poured with yellow liquidThe Sun – If your Sun is under stress or the 5th house of your chart is damaged, this means some inauspicious acts in your past life have put your personality/self-ego under stress. You may have violated ancient traditions that ruined your self-respect. This can manifest as struggles, legal problems, court cases, being accused for no reason etc. One solution is to perform any religious ritual prescribed by your faith. (Hindus can do a Satyanaryan puja). If you can get your close relatives to participate in this ritual it would be even better. Items associated with the Sun, which you can give away are saffron/kesar, wheat, copper, brown colored sugar or jaggery, red cloth, red flowers, red sandalwood.

Moon – If the Moon is badly placed or if the 4th house of your chart is under malefic influences, especially Ketu’s influence. In some past life you may have hurt your mother, perhaps thrown her out of your house. This may manifest as financial losses, diseases and debts with disproportionate mental stress. One solution is to put a silver coin in running water or the sea. If you can get your close relatives to touch this coin before you toss it, it will be even better. Items linked to the moon are white sandalwood, rice, milk, silver, sugar specifically misri/khadisakkar, white cloth, white flowers, camphor which can be donated.

Mars – If your Mars is afflicted or your 1st house or 8th house is under the influence of malefics, especially Ketu, you owe your relatives something. You may have harmed your relatives in some way in your past lives. You may face unexplainable trouble and losses around your 28th year. If this is so the best solution would be to collect money from your family members, maybe an equal contribution from your close relatives and donate this money for a mutually agreed good cause. Items you can donate to balance Mars’ energies are copper, masoor grains (red lentil, Lens culinaris), wheat, sauf/badisheb/fennel seeds, red cloth, red flowers, red sandalwood.

Mercury – If in your chart, the Mercury or your 3rd house or 6th house is under stress you have done some wrong to a sister or girl in your past life. So in this life you tend to have a lot of problems, losses in money, psychiatric issues, and no help forthcoming. The best solution is rather typical, take a few sea shells (yellow colored are best), burn them and put the ash in flowing water. If you can get your close relatives to touch the shells before you do this, it will give better results. Items resonating with his energies are green cloth, green gram/Moong grains (Vigna radiata), camphor, turpentine oil which can be donated.grainsJupiter – If the Jupiter in your chart or the 9th or 12th house is afflicted with malefics, especially Rahu, it is considered as a debt owed to the father. This may manifest as loss of saved money in the old age. The solution is to plant a peepal (Ficus religiosa) tree and take care of it so that it survives or do some seva/help out at your local temple. Jupiter linked items for donation are turmeric, jaggery or brown colored sugar, yellow flowers, yellow cloth, yellow sweets.

Venus – If the Venus or the 2nd or 7th house in your chart is under stress, it indicates a debt owed to a wife from a past life, maybe you tortured her. In this life this may manifest as grief and obstacles in performing religious and auspicious rituals. The easiest solution is to feed a white colored cow. Venus linked items are ghee, camphor, curd, rice, white cloth, white flowers which you can give away.

Saturn – If your Saturn is giving bad results or if the 10th or 11th house of the chart is damaged this indicates that you cheated someone or tortured a helpless person in some life. The best option is to offer food to a few people who work as labourers. Items linked to Saturn which can be given away are black gram/urad grains, black cloth, (feeding a chapati/bread to ravens also works nicely).

Rahu – If the 12th house is under stress this also indicates a type of ancestral debt where maybe a baby was aborted before birth. Imprisonment, betrayal, physical injury etc can be the results. Things which can be given away are yellow mustard grains, mustard oil, mixed seven types of grains, lead, blanket. Another option is to get a coconut, get every one in your close family to touch it and put it in flowing water/sea.

Ketu – If the 6th house is under stress this indicates that you have gone against your Dharma conscience, against ‘God’ in some terrible way. In this life this manifests as being childless, diseased, haunted, losses in every way. You can feed a multicolored dog or donate sesame/til grains, blanket, lead, saffron/kesar, any seven types of grains mixed together.

You might find this a bit strange, but these very simple remedies work. A fistful of grain or a few drops of oil or a piece of cloth! The planets are linked some way to these things. So if you have a Navgraha temple near where you live you can offer any of these items to the planet moorthi installed there. The second option is to offer the item in flowing water/river or the sea. Donating them to poor people or brahmins who were genuinely in need is also possible, but you may not find anyone who really deserves charity and these are rather typical items. So the best option is a temple or flowing water/sea. If you are facing exceptional problems and the planet is giving severely bad results then these items can be buried in the ground, but make sure that you do it in some lonely place.fIn Sanatan Dharm/Hinduism, everyone owes 3 types of debts. First is to the parents/ancestors, because they give us birth and take care of us. Next is to the society because it shelters us and offers us opportunities to live a fuller life. And finally to the Guru because he shows us the path to liberation and helps us find our real self. And these have to be repaid. The first one is repaid when we do our Dharma of taking care of our parents as per our conscience and by having good children to carry on the family. The second one is when we contribute positively to the society by helping others either by doing charity (if you can afford it), and being kind/helpful to others around you. And the third one is very cryptic, you don’t have to pay anything here. You repay the debt you owe your Guru when you practice what he has shown you and you finally gain your objective.

Medical diagnosis in astrology

Just the very basics, to understand what can be wrong with a chart on the medical front. First of all you need to know a bit about the parts/organs etc of the human body and then the house/planetary link with it. If you can learn this connections by heart, 80% of your work is done (they are given in any standard reference book, Books by B.V Raman are the best for beginners). For example, 1st house – head, 2nd house – face, right eye, 12th house – feet and left eye etc. In addition the houses 1st to 7th represent the right side of the body/face and the houses 8th to 12th the left side of the body/face. doc2.jpgStep 1 – When a you fall ill the first logical thing is that the ‘body’ has been afflicted with negative energy. So first check out the ascendant sign and its ascendant planetary lord. Have covered this analysis in previous posts but again the main points, (Please read this post on how to analyse empty houses to get the full picture.)

  1. Combust, debilitated, retrograde planets, conjoint or aspecting.
  2. Natural malefics or temporary malefics involved.
  3. Ruler of the houses of turmoil, 6th, 8th, 12th getting involved.
  4. The ascendant lord himself being combust, retrograde, debilitated and in company of the negative influences etc.

Step 2 – The the 6th house, the house of diseases and its bhavat bhavam, the 11th. The 6th will give you a sense of what kind of diseases are to be expected. And the ‘house of the house’ the 11th will give you a sense of the ‘loss of the disease’. i.e. how likely it is that the diseases indicated by the 6th will actually manifest. If there are planets placed here they are to be specifically analysed as they will indicate the type of diseases. And remember that the diseases indicated by the 6th house are diseases which are linked to some action of yours. i.e. being negligent about check-ups, not taking medicines on time, not consulting a proper specialist, bad habits leading to diseases, etc.

Step 3 – Then the 8th house and its Bhavat bhavam the 3rd house. The 8th house indicates the diseases which are linked to karma. You cannot avoid these, maybe reduce the extent of damage if the 3rd house supports. The 3rd house is the ‘death of death’ so before interpreting anything about the 8th house the neutralising capacity of the 3rd house should be examined.

Step 4 – Now the planetary influences, if there are any planets in or aspecting the 6th or the 8th you will need to check up what all they can do wrong. And if there are planets here, the planetary owners of these signs of the 6th and 8th will give clues on the diseases indicated.

  1. Sun – pitta/heat type of diseases, acidity to sudden diseases, pain, heat, eyesight, heart, stomach.
  2. Moon – vata/gas and kapha/phlegm diseases, eyesight, psychological problems, gas-related, arthritis, diseases triggered by cold, connected to all the liquid stuff in the body, salt imbalances, diseases of childhood, long lasting diseases.
  3. Mars – pitta/heat diseases, bone marrow, blood related problems, ovaries, sudden onset diseases, pain, skin boils, cuts and scars, accidents
  4. Mercury – all three types of kapha, pitta, vata diseases. long continuing diseases, incurable and chronic diseases, nerves, skin rashes, psychological issues.
  5. Jupiter – Kapha diseases, expansion/growths/enlargement types of diseases, all glands, fat and sugar related problems.
  6. Venus – Kapha and Vata problems, eyesight, sex organ related problems, Ojas in the body.
  7. Saturn – Vata problems, frame of the body including tendons ligaments etc. breath in every way, asthama, connected to the impurities in the body so organs connected to removal of impurities, lungs, kidneys etc. persistently low grade pain, do not have a sudden onset, start imperceptibly/gradually.
  8. Rahu/Ketu – are astral planetary forces, give results of the planet they are influenced by, they tend to hide diseases, can give non-diagnosable diseases.
    • Rahu is more connected to poisonings/misuse of steroids/medicines/chemicals etc. His diseases often create skin-related problems, causing mottling/discoloration of skin etc.
    • Ketu indicates cyclical patterns in diseases and sudden/violent onsets, like ecliptic fits etc.

doc4.jpgStep 5 – If you want to extract more information look into the divisional charts. At least look into the D-9 navamsha for the following information,

  1. The lords of the 6th and 8th in the D-1 (birth chart) – Their positions in the D-9.
  2. And the lords of the 6th and 8th of the D-9.
  3. This analysis will give you the ‘disease potential’ of the chart.

Step 6 – If you want to know how the disease affects the person on the emotional level you will have to see the Moon chart. This is the normal birth chart re-drawn with the moon sign as the 1st house. Do the same analysis of the 6th and 8th houses from here too.

Finally the conclusion – So now you can arrive at a conclusion as to which body part is weak, what kind of disease can be expected by looking at the planets and signs concerned.

Now for the timing. Look at mainly the owners of the 6th and the 8th, and/or planets placed/aspecting the 6th or 8th and check if their planetary periods are on.

  1. Which planets mahadasha going on, is the overall theme of the period negative?
  2. The transits at the present moment of time, are they going negative too?

Medical astrology is a full-fledged topic by itself and as you read more charts and come across different combinations you will learn more! This was a post to get you interested in it. This might seem like a complicated analysis but if you follow it step-wise you can easily pinpoint the possible medical conditions in the chart.

Ketu Mahadasha

I have written a very detailed post here onVimshottari dasha analysis do read it first. It is on how to evaluate the general effects of planets during their planetary periods, using the Vimshottari dasha system. Not everyone will experience all the 9 graha/planetary forces’s Mahadasha during their lives. This post is about Ketu’s times!ketu 1As always there is no point to doing astrological predictions if you do not have the precise birth details. Even a difference of 1 minute will put off your Dasha calculations. Do your birth time rectification using maths or life-event matching or palmistry and then get into the dasha predictions. If your birth moon Nakshatra/Lunar mansion is Ashwini, Magha or Mula you will have your Ketu mahadasha going on at your birth. The balance of the planet’s dasha period remaining at birth is calculated using the location (degree/minute/second) of Moon in the nakshatra. If you get this birth time wrong your starting point will be wrong thus your entire life-time’s calculation will go wrong.

To evaluate Ketu’s Mahadasha in your life, there are 3 steps.

Step 1 is to check out these following about Ketu in your chart. You need to know the power of Ketu in giving results and also the aspects of life which he represents. These keywords are going to be in focus during his periods.

  1. Location of Ketu in your birth chart (divisional chart 1/D-1). Can you expect it to give its results completely or not?
    • Which house and in which sign is he placed? Thus which aspects of life is he influencing.
    • Is he in the sign of a friend/neutral/enemy planet.
    • Is Ketu exalted/debilitated?
    • Which planets is he conjoint or aspected by? Thus which other aspects of the personality is he influencing?
    • Has he matured?
  2. You can repeat this same analysis from the birth Moon sign to get the effects that this Ketu Mahadasha is going to have on the emotional aspects.
  3. And you can repeat this same analysis using the divisional chart 9, Navamsha chart to get perspective on the sub-conscious and astral expectations and also the sum total of his potential. (If you find this complicated right now, don’t overwhelm yourself, do it whenever you feel more confident.)

Ketu is primarily the force of detachment and dissociation. As mindful dissociation from the manifested world is required for spiritual growth he is also called the Moksh-karak (agent of enlightenment). But broadly whichever house/aspect Ketu touches, he will make you indifferent to them. These will simply not be relevant to you, you will be apathetic to them. Sometimes being detached can give better fruits than being overly attached to things. If he is favourably placed and in the company of benefics and influencing the powerful houses of your chart he will give good results. Gains from overseas, business where you deal with intangible stuff (eg stock markets are just numbers not solid stuff), journeys to distant places including astral travel etc are possible. If he is heavily influenced by malefics and is going to give unpleasant results then he can cause, deaths, separations, amputations, losses, diseases, anxieties and related stuff. Ketu in his periods will shed off all that is consuming your energy for no good reason. All the things which are not wanted at the deeper inner levels will be cut off by Ketu.

But go through his karakatva/all that he stands for in the chart, before predicting hopeless things and causing yourself needless stress.

Step 2 is now you will need to evaluate upto the antardasha/sub-period levels at least. (Even smaller segments are called successively Pratyantar-dasha, Sookshma-dasha and Pran-dasha. The logic on how to analyse these even smaller units remains the same for each planetary owner of the sub/sub periods.)

  1. Find out the power of the sub-period planetary lord like you did for Ketu above.
    • Which houses he rules over is more important now because Ketu is headless and will take cues from this sub-period lord.
    • Especially if this sub-period lord is the owner of the 2nd or 7th house (Marakesh) its sub-period within the Ketu mahadasha can cause physical death.
  2. The mutual relationship between Ketu and the sub-period lord. If they are in the 6/8 or 2/12 uncomfortable aspects, that sub-lord’s sub-period will not be comfortable.

Step 3 is the routine planetary transits/gochar which will modify results during their transit periods. You can get this from your software and superimpose it on your D-1 birth chart. Use a different pen so that you can make sense of the composite chart you are drawing.ketu-9.jpgKetu Mahadasha/main period lasts for 7 years within which you will experience the following antardasha/sub-periods. These are very very general readings just to trigger your own thought processes. Each horoscope is unique so each will have its own unique analysis. Readings/combinations from books should be used for reference, as a starting point and to build into your own further analysis.

  1. Ketu antardasha – 4 months 27 days
    • If Ketu is placed well he will give gains in terms of professional life, personal life, may give awards and recognition, separation from negative things in life. But despite this he will give an underlying mental stress, maybe headaches.
    • If Ketu is not placed well, debilitated or under malefic influence he will be no condition to give positive results. Then he will give his results of apathy and separation in the negative sense, causing separation from the positive things in life. As Ketu is a headless graha, most problems will be in some way linked to the ‘head’.
  2. Venus antardasha – 14 months 0 days
    • If Ketu and Venus have a fruitful working relationship then expect pilgrimages, visits to sacred places, companionship, profits and gains through partners. Learning opportunities and broadening of philosophical outlook.
    • But if these 2 are in an uncomfortable relationship in your chart then expect eye problems, headaches, problems in relationships, they can also cause separations and divorces.
  3. Sun antardasha – 4 months 6 days
    • If Ketu and Sun are comfortable with each other and will give benefic results then gain in wealth, creativity, political power, favours from political leaders, a good relationship with the father, wins in legal issues is possible.
    • However negative results of such a combination can give problems with the government, health related issues, fevers, heart problems, unnecessary travel to foreign locations etc.
  4. Moon antardasha – 7 months 0 days
    • If Ketu and Moon are mutually comfortable then expect profits in your businesses, you may construct new houses, buy new cars or start something new connected with liquids. Interactions with women will increase. More results depending on all the things Moon stands for in your horoscope.
    • Else the negative effects are like this, problems from women, emotional issues destabilised life, lack of comforts etc.
  5. Mars antardasha – 4 months 27 days
    • If Ketu and Mars are on good terms in your chart you will start something new as can be seen from the karakatva of Mars in your chart. Eg, you can start new businesses or lands. There will be energy and confidence in pursuing your interests.
    • Else the negative effects can include traumas, surgeries, accidents, damage to the vitality of the physical body, diseases which cannot be diagnosed etc.
  6. Rahu antardasha – 12 months 18 days
    • Rahu and Ketu are always 108 degrees apart. Ketu desires Rahu and Rahu desires only his ambitions
    • If Rahu is well placed with benefic planets and is capable of giving positive results, your ambitions will be high and also will be fulfilled during this period. Especially sucess in foreign lands, markets and speculation.
    • If not then you will suffer from over-reaching and falling while chasing your ambitions. Troubles and diseases may accompany.
  7. Jupiter antardasha – 11 months 5 days
    • If Ketu and Jupiter are favourably situated then you can perform rituals like pujas, yadnyas etc, publicly visible ceremonies. There will be prosperity, celebrations and gains. Maybe marriages and birth of children.
    • If not then there will separations from the aspects of life defined by Jupiter in in the horoscope.
  8. Saturn antardasha – 13 months 9 days
    • If Ketu and Saturn are both capable of giving good results with each other then social mobility, hard work which yields success, change of job for the better,
    • If not then this period can cause physical problems related to bones, teeth, nerves, obstacles, death of parents (if indicated), social defamations, loss in power and money, theft, long journeys etc.
  9. Mercury antardasha – 11 months 27 days
    •  If Ketu and Mercury are favourably disposed towards each other can lead to pilgrimages, good health and comfortable lifestyle, huge profits in trade and good communications, birth of children etc.
    • If not then, can cause losses in mental and intellectual capacity, problems in speech, losses to the children and siblings etc.
    • This is the final sub-period of Ketu Mahadasha. In this period you will release all that related to Ketu and prepare yourself for the upcoming Venus mahadasha of 20 years.
    • If, in case, you have your Venus and Ketu conjunct with each other then you will have a massive 27 (20+7) years of life as a seamless Venus/Ketu combination mahadasha. And if by chance Venus is your ascendant also here you will face 27 yrs of a strange dissociation with your sense of self.

The generic remedy for those suffering from problems during this period of Ketu is pujas of Shiv or Shakti. Doing the Rudraabhisek once in a while or a daily recitation of any Shiv mantra will be good. Or if you are more drawn to Shakti, a yadnya of Devi Mahatmya once in a while or reciting any mantra of Devi daily will help.

Analysing the effects of planetary periods requires an understanding of several factors in the horoscope, the most important being the karakatva of that planet (which areas of your life are controlled by the planet) and the power of the planet to give good/bad results. If you can determine these two things with confidence, analysing the effects of that planet’s periods will be easy.

Why Divisional Charts?

Astrology is mathematics. Thank god for software these days, else earlier going to an astrologer for a consultation was a day-long affair as he would have had to calculate everything by hand. Thus prashana/question method was more popular where the astrologer would be asked only one important question and he would answer it using the planetary positions of the instant the question was asked.astrology But now we have accurate birth times and software so we can accurately chart out every aspect of our lives. Now let’s check out why divisional charts are so important.

For answering specific questions in Vedic astrology, we have to check out the divisional charts. Making life predictions using just the birth chart (D-1) will give incomplete results. If you cannot access the divisional charts, or have doubts regarding the exact birth time, use the prashna/question system as it will give better accurate readings. An example now. If suppose Venus is exalted in the birth chart (D-1), so you think he will give good results. But Venus signifies several things, from sexual pleasure to ultimate moksha! So how do you narrow down the result? Check the D-9, if you find this Venus debilitated, the chances of a spouse and pleasure in the married life are dim. But then you see that in the D-20 chart he is again exalted, so you are now sure that he is going to give results related to spiritual progress.

So the birth chart D-1. In one day there are 12 possible ascendants and thus 12 variants of basic birth charts also called as the 1st divisional chart. Thus the Ascendant in D-1 changes every 2 hours. So can we realistically expect that everyone born with the same D-1 in that day is the same? No! This difference is because the higher divisional charts change every second, fine-tuning the personality. You can use the D-1 for an overview of how the life will unfold and the major events and stuff, it is the basis of all your reading. But for a good prediction you cannot predict from a single position; you always have look for patterns in the placements. If the same placements are repeated in the birth chart and in the divisional charts the event can be predicted with confidence. Consider the D-1 as the foundation and the divisional chart as a layer overlaid on it to fine-tune. It requires some learning, some practice and a bit of intuition. Quite do-able!

Now D-2 also called the Hora divisional chart. In this chart the ascendant changes every 1 hour. The Hora chart is used to determine if the energy of every planet is more into expression and creation (solar type of energy) or accumulation and consolidation (lunar type of energy). This D-2 is used to determine the wealth that a person will be able to create or accumulate in his lifetime. A simple analysis here is to see how the planets from D-1 shift here. How many get into the Lunar section and how many into the Solar section, thus you know if you will be more into creating wealth with your intelligence or into hoarding and multiplying.

D-3 also called Dreshkansha. This D-3 ascendant changes every 40 minutes. This chart used to determine the brothers/sisters and interactions with your siblings, team-members, your extended family and neighbourhood. Conversations, communications and commercial activities in small groups. Personal courage and support from the close community is seen from this D-3 chart. (Also longevity can be seen from here as the lord of the 22nd amsha of this chart is linked to the physical death.) A simple analysis again here check out where the planets from D-1 get placed in the D-3. If the lord of the 3rd house in the D-1 gets well placed in D-3 obviously good results.

D – 4 the Chaturthansha ascendant and thus this divisional chart changes every 30 minutes. This is where you check out the details regarding the childhood, environment of the home, comfort, stability, security, landed property and most importantly your Luck/auspiciousness. Your education till college and getting a professional degree. Here too, check out how the planets from D-1 get placed in this D-4. If an exalted lord of the 4th house of the D-1 gets debilitated in the D-4 you will not get much happiness in the matters related to the 4th house.astrologyD- 7 Saptamsha is used to understand more about the legal partnerships that a person will get into. The nature of his partners. And also the benefits that he will get from such alliances, contracts, bargains and negotiations. This will include children. This D7 ascendant sign will change every 18 minutes. This is especially important as you will get clients who will have problems regarding childlessness.

D- 9 the more well known Navamsha (full post here) chart. This D9 ascendant sign changes every 13 minutes. It represents the foundations of your life in every way possible. In Sanatan Dharma the spouse helps you in performing your duties and is called Dharmapati/Dharmapatni thus spouse is seen from the D-9. This chart represents the fruits of auspicious behaviour from your past and present lives. This is very important and if not anything else at least refer to this chart in addition to the D-1.

D-10 Dashamansha is the tenth divisional chart and will indicate the fruits that you will get from your profession, ie. social mobility, public reputation, respect in your profession and obviously salary/money too. Here you are required to do a duty to the society in general, how will this duty be, this public responsibility? A burden or an easy task? How you conduct yourself in the society. And how will you benefit from doing this duty, your power and position, for this check out the D-10. This chart and its ascendant changes every 12 minutes. Especially important is the placement of the lord of the 10th house of the D-1 and where he shifts to in the D-10. You will get clients with questions on profession and job, for this question you will need to refer to D-1, D-9 and D-10.

D – 12 the Dwadasha-ansha indicates parents and grandparents. Their role in your life, their assets available to you their lifespans etc. How they will support you and also how you will be required to take care of them. This ascendant and the resultant chart changes in about 9 minutes. This house also represents the fruits of your actions from your immediate past life. Eg. Sometimes you get a client enquiring about the health of an ailing parent whose birth details are not available.

The D-16, Shodasha-ansha, This ascendant changes every 7 minutes. This is related to vehicles and travel. Will you travel a lot? In a train or in a flight? The need to travel and the ease, comfort and happiness associated with it is seen from here. e.g. Accident prone D-16 charts should avoid risky behaviour while travelling or better yet, use public transport.astrologyD – 20 The Vimshamsha, a very important chart used for calculating the spiritual and philosophical outlook. And for actual wisdom. This ascendant changes every 6 minutes. Check the placements of the owners of the Dharm trikon = 1st, 5th, and 9th houses in the D-1 and see where they shift to in the D-20 for spiritual growth.

D – 24 Chaturvimshansha to be seen for formal education. This ascendant changes about every 5 minutes. Clients often ask about the higher education of their children. This chart represents higher education. And the D-4 above is lower education. D-24 is also the intelligence and academic achievements. For counselling a student on which professional course he needs to choose, you should analyse D-24 and also D-10. Spiritual powers or ‘siddhi’ also can be seen from this D-24 chart. (for Siddhi check out the Moksh trikon of the D-1 too.)

D-27 Bhansha. Nakshatra amsha ascendant changes every 4 minutes or so and this chart represents the sum total of all the strengths and weaknesses in the personality. It can also indicate the opportunities for growth and the possibilities where you will face misfortune in life. It is in a very deep way how you perceive (rationally and intuitively) all that you experience of this manifested world. You always can change how you perceive by reflection, study, developing your own philosophy, achieve a neutrality and manage your thought patterns. This chart also indicates if and how you can do this.

D- 30 Trisham-ansha – D-30 is an extension of the 6th house of the D-1 birth chart. It tells you about the potential for misfortunes, debt, disease, servitude, enemies, and general problems in your life. Pain and suffering and if any remedies can be seen from here. This ascendent and thus this chart changes every 4 minutes.

D – 60 – Shastiamsha, this is the final results that a planet will give in a lifetime. I have written a full post on this D-60 here.

There are several more types of varga charts (D-108 Ashtottarashata-ansha is the last vedic varga chart which indicates the possibility of final moksha and experiencing your own divinity. Its ascendant changes every 2.2 seconds), all of them have their own significance but then the astrologer also has to be well qualified and interested enough to analyse them. Deciphering varga charts may seem very crazy, I am a bit worried if I might have scared you off learning astrology. But they are easy, you have the correct birth-time, you can predict everything about the chart with reasonable confidence.

Always remember the D-1 birth chart is the manifested physical chart. All the higher divisional charts indicate the potential. You should take cues from the higher charts, these are the ‘seeds’ which will ultimately manifest. It is in your hands to increase or decrease their influence on you. Like the example of the exalted Venus, if the person knows that he is going to be great in the spiritual arena (D-20), but not so much in the married life (D-9), he can take a decision to focus completely on his Sadhana and forgo getting married. Or he can take remedial actions which will allow him to focus more on his married life (to support the debilitated Venus in D-9) and forgo his spiritual potential. Ultimately remember that the choice is always in your hands.

So use your divisional charts to find out what is in your hands, the potential that you have within you and change. Change your thoughts and focus on your plus points so that you can positively influence your own life.

Interpreting empty houses in your chart

There are 12 houses/bhava and 9 graha/planets in the chart. So its obvious that a few houses in your chart are going to look empty. So how do you interpret these aspects of your life?pexels-photo-1339295.jpegA single house represents several things, for example the 8th house represents death, longevity, situation and circumstances of death, surgery, accidents, the family assets of the first spouse, the actual third spouse, tantrik tendencies, occult, legacies and bequeaths from deaths of others, research related professions, you can be a surgeon, an archeologist, secrets and explorations, movement of vital energy/pran, secret spiritual practices, witch! and so on. So how do you interpret all these things from just one house? If this house is well placed will you get all these things at once? Or perhaps not! Or will you?

To fine-tune the results possible from a house you will need to look for more pointers. But first the very basics. It sounds boring, but it will open up all the possibilities related to the house, so you can then focus on which aspect of this house you need to analyse in detail. First analyse your own horoscope, because doing so much work for a client’s chart at the beginning will be a bit much.

(I will just describe how it is to be done, I have never asked my students to learn the combinations by rote, it scared me as a child and it scares them too. First try to understand the process and think about it. Astrology is very simply matching keywords. You have 12 houses/bhava, 12 signs/rashi and 9 graha/planets, very do-able! Then if you feel like it, learn the astrological combinations from the reference books by rote. My Dad gave me this ‘300 Important Combinations’ by B.V. Raman when I was 10yrs old or something, to my child-mind it took away all the fun, made astrology just like school work.)https://psychologicallyastrology.comSo in interpreting any house of your horoscope, you will start with the 1st divisional chart, the birth chart where the rising sign occupies the first house. This is what you should be looking at.

  1. The sign/rashi occupying the house.
    • The results will be a mix of the house number and the sign both.
    • Eg, Taurus occupies the 8th, you will consider the energies of the 8th, more as a resource, keep on storing them, till the trigger point arrives and then undergo a very balanced, measured, deep, but a partly-publicly visible transformation of identity.
    • to check out if this sign and house are comfortable together, count the houses between them, a 6/8 axis is a bit uncomfortable, applies more to Virgo and Scorpio ascendants.
  2. The planetary owner of that sign, his ‘comfort’ levels!
    • where he is placed in your chart
    • any planets conjoint/aspecting him
    • if he is exalted, debilitated, combust, retrograde or in the house of his friend/enemy/neutral graha etc.
    • and the number of houses he is away from his this house he owns (6, 8, 12 houses away is not very comfortable, rest is ok.)
  3. The planets placed in that house itself,
    • the nature of the planet, its comfort levels.
    • also correlate these planets to the houses they own in your chart
    • eg. if the ascendent lord himself in the 8th, you will accept that change triggered by the factors of the 8th is the essential and participate more effectively in its matters.
    • if this house is vacant then obviously nil analysis for this point.
  4. The natural sign of the zodiac of that house will always subtly add its influence from wherever it may be located.
    • and the number of houses this natural sign is away from this house he owns (6, 8, 12 houses away is not very comfortable, rest is ok.) (read this post on Libra ascendant to know the logic behind this)
    • eg Aries will influence the 1st house always and so on till Pisces influencing the 12th house.
  5. The natural owner of that house and any significance that you can draw from its position.
    • eg. Mars will subtly influence the 1st and 8th houses always. If he is well placed these houses will get a positive push.
  6. Find the emotional context related to the house.
    • eg. The 8th house from the ascendant will give the physical environments and your response to it, but to find out how this house affects you on the emotional levels check out the house 8th from the birth moon.

https://psychologicallyastrology.com7. And then finally the most tedious but complete analysis, reorient the chart with this house as the first house to analyse it completely.

  • Use a paper and pencil to make it easier. For each house now pay attention to the its sign, its planets and owner planet.
  • You merge the keywords like this, suppose you are analysing the 8th house, consider the 8th as the first house. Merge the keywords of the 8th with those of the 1st house. Thus you will know how you are able to handle and participate in the catastrophic transformations of the self-identity. .
  • the 9th house, (2nd from the 8th), as the treasures, assets, the publicly acknowledged resources and those that you will receive from your family etc. which can be derived from the keywords of the 8th. Also how your peers, paternal figures and your philosophies are linked to all this. eg If you have Jupiter here in Gemini, your 8th house stuff will give you significant legacies from your extended family.
  • the 10th house, (3rd from the 8th), everything about it will indicate the communications, trade, money-making, practical aspects, your similar minded local group, local businesses etc related to the matters of the 8th. Also how these are linked to your profession, social mobility and salary.
  • the 11th house (4th from the 8th), will be a good indicator of the traditional mores, culture, societal norms, the emotional security, the comfort and protective aspects of the 8th house matters. Also how this gets linked to your luck, your social groups, your like-minded groups, your ability to market yourself, to make money from several sources.
  • and so on for every house
  • till you reach the 7th house of your chart (counted 12th from the 8th house). Here this house will indicate the losses of the stuff indicated by the 8th. 8th is a very personal, individual, secret house. 7th is where secrecy and individuality fails, loses out to alliances, beauty, fairly crafted open negotiations and balance.

So you see even if your this house seems vacant, there is a lot of stuff you can use to predict about it in your basic birth chart itself.https://psychologicallyastrology.comBut if you are not satisfied with this, (for your personal chart you should not be satisfied, the more you know the better you understand yourself!), and if you have your exact birth time, draw your Navamsha D-9 chart. This gives the real you, your innermost sub-conscious expectations regarding your current life. Every house from this chart will give you the inner workings regarding it. This is the sum of the astral energies you have at your disposal as regarding this house. (You can analyse the other divisional charts too if you feel up to it.)

A secret now, you can trigger these energies of the Navamsha consciously. For example your 8th house owner is debilitated in your D-1 but in your D-9 he shifts to more comfortable position, or your 8th house gets occupied with a more comfortable sign/planet, you can actively focus on this D9 placement and trigger better results in your manifested physical reality as represented by your D-1. If you want to be a good surgeon and your 8th house in the D-9 offers you the potential you can actively focus on the 8th of the D-9, do planetary remedies/beej mantra etc of the concerned planets from here to trigger your success as a surgeon!

There are other divisional charts too that you can refer to if you wish, each will add more to your understanding of your chart, including the empty houses. I have written about the D-60 here but for a beginner if it feels too tedious, leave it. I want everyone to enjoy reading and learning Jyotish! https://psychologicallyastrology.comSo here is how every individual house of the chart is completely analysed. There may or many not be planets placed in it, but still the analysis holds.

A planet placed in a house adds more focus to it. This planet-chart (like moon chart) will be a variation of the basic birth chart D-1 but drawn with that planet’s sign as the first house. Having a planet in a house will mean that more of your life experiences will be focussed around this house. The ‘karmic focus’ so as to say!

But the ’empty houses’ are important too, having no planets in that house will not make that aspect of your life nil, less intense in the physical manifested life perhaps. But what if the owner of the vacant 8th house goes and occupies the 1st house or is conjunct the ascendant lord? Your entire personality will be influenced by the matters of the 8th! Then again you will have some sub-conscious expectations from this seemingly empty house (D-9). So give equal importance to all houses of your chart.

Do this long-ish exercise with your own chart sometime (This is Vedic astrology, so please use a Vedic software for calculating the charts) and see if your life events match up.
