Mooltrikon signs

This is a simple to understand concept. A planet if placed in a specific section of the zodiac, he can give exceptional results.

The logic behind these degree ranges is something called “avastha’, meaning status, condition or situation. These avashtas are used to gain more depth into the reading. There are several categories of avastha. Jyotish is very deep and thorough. These states are calculated using the degrees of the planet, the nakshatras they are in the navamsha, etc things, but now you can just read it from your software. These avasthas are not very commonly used as interpreting them requires time and a fine understanding of human psychology. You can try analysing your own birth planets if you feel like it. The interaction of the mind, emotions and soul energy is linked to the material here. There are several types of avasthas, this is just for your information.

Classification One – There are 3 levels of Avastha/ states described. These indicate the levels of self-awareness that the planet possesses. Every planet is capable of giving results, but only if it is aware of its ability to give these results. This first level of classification indicates just this.

  1. Jagrut/ Awake (own or exaltation sign), full results
  2. Swapna / Dreaming (friend’s or neutral planet’s sign, nil results,
  3. Sushupti / deeply asleep (enemy’s or debilitation sign) states, about 5% or nil

Classification Two – These are 5 levels of Awasthas /states. Represented as the age of planet, the five states are and the power of the planet to give visible results is,

  1. Bala / infant – 25%
  2. Kumara / child – 50%
  3. Yuva / youth – 100%
  4. Vruddha / aged – 10%
  5. Mruta/ dead – 5%

Classification Three – The 6 levels of Awasthas /states which represent the feeling of self-esteem, self-worth, sense of accomplishment of the planet, in a way the mood of the planet. The six states represent worldly benefit and losses, health and happiness.

  1. Lajjita/humiliated – Planet in the 5th house in conjunction with rahu or ketu, Saturn or mars. Averse to humanity, philosophy god
  2. Garvita/proud – Planet in exaltation sign or moolatrikona zone. happiness and gains
  3. Kshudita/hungry – Planet in enemy’s sign or conjoined with enemy or aspected by enemy. Grief
  4. Trashita/thirsty – Planet in a watery sign, aspected by a malefic and not associated with a benefic., Losses, Wicked deeds
  5. Mudita/sated/happy – Planet in a friend’s sign or aspected by a friend and conjoined with Jupiter, Gains
  6. Kshobhita/guilty/repentant – Planet in conjunction with sun and aspected by malefics and an enemy. Penury

Planets in lajjita, kshudita, kshobhita and trashita create miseries and lead to disruption of the house they are in. Lajjita being the best of these four states will give something and will not be totally destructive. The house occupied by these planets is more affected than if the house lord is in one of the four states. For example the lord of 3rd house in kshobhita state in the 7th house will represent worse effects for the 7th house and not the 3rd.

Classification Four – 9 levels of Awasthas /States. Represent the emotional state of spirit, these take into consideration its position within house. The visible effects of a planet are expressed fully in the first three states, medium in the next two and little or nothing in the remaining four.

  1. Deepta/Brilliant (exaltation) best possible results,
  2. Swastha (own sign) generally auspicious results,
  3. Pramudita/Joyful (extreme friend’s sign) average results,
  4. Shanta/Contented (friend’s sign),
  5. Deena/deficient-humble (neutral’s sign),
  6. Dukhita/sad (enemy’s sign),
  7. vikal/anxious panicky (with a malefic planet),
  8. Khala/malicious/wicked (inauspicious sign – debilitation),
  9. kopa/Infuriated (conjoined with sun).

Classification Five – activities that the planet is supposed to be interested in.

  1. Shayana – resting
  2. Upaveshana – Sitting down
  3. Netrapani – Leading
  4. Prakashana Illuminating
  5. Gamana – Coming
  6. Agamana – Coming and going
  7. Sabha – In the audience
  8. Aagama – Flowing
  9. Bhojana – Eating
  10. Nrityalipsa – Dancing
  11. Kautuka -admiring
  12. Nidra – Sleeping

Mool-trikon signs

Now about the Mool-trikon. A planet reaches his ‘garvit’ ‘proud’ status when he is within the mool-trikon degree range. The other types of status in this avastha- system are,

  • Lajjit – shy, modest, sensitive
  • Garvit – proud
  • Kshudit – hungry, starving
  • Trushit – strongly desirous
  • Mudit – happy, delighted
  • Kshobhit – irritated, disturbed, unsteady

When the planet is in his Mool-trikon range, he is able to give excellent results. This planet is extremely comfortable as the energy of this degree range matches his nature perfectly. If there are no malefic influences on this planet here the results will be better. You can consider these to be somewhat like exalted planets. If you observe the chart, all the planets except Moon have their mool-trikon ranges in one of the signs they own. Moon is a bit different as he has his Mool-trikon range in Taurus, his sign of exaltation and not in Cancer, his own sign.

The nature of the planet completely matches the nature of the environment provided by the Mool-trikon range. eg Jupiter’s nature more matches the nature of the Sagittarius environment rather than Pisces, though he rules both of them. A Jupiter placed in Sagittarius gives more positive and visible auspicious results than when he is placed in Pisces. In Pisces he will give his favourable results but they will be more on the inner level rather than the material, invisible to the others.

Mool-trikon means the base of the triangle or the triangle which makes up the foundation. If a planet is in Mool-trikon his positive benefits will also spread to the houses placed 5/9 from it. This house with the planet will act as the anchor to that 1/5/9 trikon axis to which it belongs. (Remember the Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksh trikon concept?). Eg Moon has his Mool-trikon in Taurus, so such a Moon will positively influence Virgo and Capricorn signs and the related houses of the chart. If you have such charts in your study samples do this analysis for yourself and see how the trikon axis as a whole benefits from planets placed in their mool-trikon ranges.

If you have a planet in his mool-trikon range in your chart, you will see positive effects during his dasha periods, depending on what he signifies in your chart, eg new house, property, job, promotions, birth of child etc are some of the comforts possible. There is confidence in your dealings with the matters of this planet and you feel due pride in your accomplishments here. ie This planet gives favourable results on both the material and emotional levels. But before predicting results do check the power of the entire horoscope to support and especially the power of the Ascendant lord and the Moon. (If in the spiritual context, then the Sun too.)

Rahu and Ketu have no specific mool-trikon degrees as mentioned in any of the reference classical texts.

Understanding combustion of planets

Sun is a natural malefic, his energies scorch and dry out. Being too close to this ball of fire is not a pleasant experience. So if planets get too close to the Sun it is called ‘combustion’.

  • Sun and Moon are the two luminaries of astrology. If Moon gets close to the Sun, it is the no-moon day, Amavasya with very different energies.
  • If Rahu or Ketu get too close to the Sun, it causes eclipses, so again a very different energy. These two are the two completely astral forces represented by the Nodes of the Moon also called Chhaya-graha.
  • It is when the remaining 5 planets, the Tara-graha, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn get too close to the Sun they are considered to be combust, burnt out and incapable of giving results.

In a birth horoscope if you see a planet is combust do pay attention to what he signifies and how is this energy of combustion going to affect the chart as a whole.

Sun is the sense of self, self-ego, self-entitlement, all about ‘me’. He doesn’t allow anyone else to share center-stage with him. He is the King, self-referential, self-focussed, royal, not much bothered about others who are his subjects. Combustion is like an eclipse, the Sun eclipses the planet.

The Ascendant and its planetary Lord

If there are combust planets in the birth chart, their effect will last a life time. Check out which houses are owned by the combust planet, these will be adversely affected. Also check the house ruled by the Sun for atypical results.  If the ascendant lord himself is combust the situation is more difficult. Major planets combust or 2 or more planets combust can reduce the longevity. If there are benefic influences on this Sun+planet duo the situation is better. Or if the combustion happens in a house other than the 6th, 8th and 12th houses. Or if the Navamsha provides some better influence. The actual  combustion effect will naturally vary as per the individual chart. As per the Vimshottari Dasha system, the Mahadasha of the planet will not give its expected results, also his sub-periods in other planet’s Mahadashas will be affected. Sun’s Mahadasha will also be atypical as here Sun=Sun+the planet.

When a planet gets too close to the Sun, he is stopped from giving his results independently. He cannot out-shine the Sun. The Sun drowns out his energy with his effulgence. This other planet has to transfer all his essence to the Sun. The Sun dries up this planet and takes on his abilities. So the Sun in such a horoscope will be a Sun tinged with the abilities of this combust planet. Now when you examine the role of the Sun in this chart, you have to think of him as Sun+planet.

Eg Let’s check out the combustion of Mercury in detail.

Mercury being so close to the Sun will be combust in about 25% of the horoscopes. So what happens is that the Sun will draw up all the power of Mercury to give results. It is like he will evaporate Mercury’s essence. The closer he is, more intense is the evaporation. All keywords of Mercury are now appropriated by the Sun. The Sun will decide how to use them. The separate agency called “Mercury’ has stopped existing. So if you have such a Sun in your horoscope, all your Mercury related abilities will be diverted only for your selfish and self-oriented purposes. Mercury is a very important planet, the son of the Moon. Thinking ability, way of thinking, using the memories and data available in your astral self, direction of thought, skills, networking, financial ability, speech, creation of options, boldness to act, siblings, trades, etc. All this will be directed to the self. You will not bother about others while using your Mercury talents. eg You can hurt others with your speech and not be even aware of it or lying is easy if you consider it necessary for your own needs. Mercury controls teamwork, so you fail at this miserably, you cannot work in a group nor can you listen to other’s opinions. Having a good time with siblings and brothers can be impossible. Getting others to cooperate with you can be difficult and you feel that you don’t need their help. But it doesn’t work like that in real life. Everything we do, we need some help from others. The self-ego blinds the analytical processes. Over-confidence and then problems are quite common with this placement. You might waste energy in projects which are logically unable to succeed. This false sense of self-ego over-shadows the intellect.

And strangely in the background there is low self-esteem too. The planet knows that he has been destroyed by the harshness of the Sun, so exists in a highly uncomfortable state. The Sun is a natural malefic, remember! He feels a mix of defeat, fear, debilitation, inferiority, he is sitting with a malefic and just wants to die! Thus you feel a inner sense of inferior in the matters indicated by the planet. But there is the overshadowing self-referential influence of the Sun. So this mix turns into a superficial exaggerated bravado in the matters controlled by Mercury. You internally know that all your Mercury abilities are hollow but you cannot stop yourself from projecting that you are superior in their context. It can get quite mixed.

You succeed in those aspects of life where you are required to work alone and you need the talents of Mercury. So look for such avenues to make the most of your combust Mercury + Sun power.

Be kind.. to yourself

In transit also planets will get combust, so it is advisable to pay attention to the activities of the planet under combustion. Different planets get combust at varying distances from the Sun. But especially when the distance between it and the Sun reduces to less than 3deg 20minutes arc length (ie one Nakshatra pada distance) be very careful.

So in periods where the planets are combust you will see the following trends around you. Almost everyone will display the change caused by combust planets in transit.

Mercury combust – loss of cooperation, failure of teamwork, self-ego ruining logical plans, faulty conclusions from data because of misplaced confidence, financial markets going down because of over-inflated data. Everyone thinks for him alone.

Venus combust – self-ego wants to be entertained, movies theatres games etc make a profit, failure in personal relationships as both partners become more selfish, legal issues crop up because business partners do not want to share profits equitably, spiritual progress goes slower as individual-ego pops up as you sit for Dhyan. Everyone wants to relate to his own person, do what makes him happy.

Mars combust – personal vitality comes in focus, physical aggression, competitions, rash driving, exaggerated over-confidence, strong belief in one’s competitive abilities. Everyone will fight for what he wants. However as Mars and Sun are buddies, you can make good use of this time to aggressively and competitively progress in some way or the other. However remember that aggression should be directed away from the family/husband/wife/children.

Jupiter combust – there is a crisis of belief, the self-ego dominates the philosophy, is an atheist, doesn’t believe in a higher self, fails to perform the necessary rituals and things connected to eternal religion, are self-guided, do not think that they need guidance from their peers/teachers. Everyone will follow his own personal belief.

Saturn combust – this is potentially highly problematic placement. Sun is Saturn’s father and they do not get along at all. Laziness, procrastination, misplaced belief in one’s abilities, irregular working style, luck, money and social reputation are all affected adversely. Everyone will think that their work alone is perfect.

Combustion in transit affects everyone together as a mass. So before combustion season starts its good to be aware of what is in the offing and be prepared for a over-load of Sun’s scorching energy.

There is an interesting astronomical fact here. Exact combustion is when the planet and the Sun share the exact degree. Here the inner planets, Venus and Mercury can be seen on the disc of the Sun as black dots (superior combustion) or they can disappear behind the Sun’s disc (inferior combustion). The outer planets Mars, Jupiter and Saturn can only disappear behind the Sun’s disc. Practically it does not make a significant difference in the readings.

Just remember that the planet gets absorbed in the Sun. The Sun becomes a complex Sun+planet combine. The abilities conferred by the planet don’t vanish but are used as per the direction of the Sun. So do not ignore combustion, either in birth charts or in transit, it has very significant effects on us.

More on Eclipses and their astrological results

Eclipses are important astronomical events where the Lunar nodes intersect the apparent position of the Sun or the Moon in the sky. Rahu or Ketu occult the luminaries and obscure their light. These events are important for those who are actively engaged in spiritual practice and if you do any Mantra-Jaap or energy ritual during this period it will be successful/ accomplished (Siddh). Eclipses release a significant chunk of energy which if not utilised mindfully, will cause temporary imbalances in your life.

Eclipses can occur in clusters, often a lunar eclipse will be followed immediately by a solar eclipse and 2-3 eclipses can occur one after the other within a span of 2-3 months. In such cases the effects of the eclipse energies will continue for extended periods.

Solar eclipses are always more powerful than Lunar ones. During the Solar eclipses, the Moon’s energies are already absent, it is an Amavasya, a no-moon night, already bursting with energy. A solar eclipse is when the Moon comes exactly between the Earth and the Sun. A partial solar eclipse occurs in the polar regions of the Earth when the center of the Moon’s shadow misses the Earth. If all three are aligned perfectly it then becomes a complete solar eclipse. The energies are more intense if you are within the eclipse zone. Eclipses occurring elsewhere do not influence you so much. A complete eclipse obviously releases more energy than a partial one.

Here is how you ascertain the effect of a solar eclipse (or even lunar eclipse) on your horoscope. Find out the Ascendant sign, Moon sign and Sun sign of your personal horoscope. (Vedic/ Indian software)

  • The ascendant sign indicates your physical and manifested reality.
  • The Moon sign represents your sub-conscious, astral self, your emotions and psychological effects.
  • The Sun sign will represent your personal ego, creativity, divine inspiration etc.

Find out the sign in which the current Sun in transit is in the sky. i.e. the sign of the zodiac in which the eclipse is due to occur.

  • Now count from your ascendant sign till this Sun’s current transit sign to get the effect on your physical environment
  • Count from your birth Moon sign to this sign in which the eclipse is occurring to get the effect on your mind and emotions.
  • Count from your birth Sun sign to this sign which will have the eclipse to get the effect on your overall well-being.

Two special cases here, Cancer and Leo signs owned by the luminaries. Wherever they are placed in your birth horoscope, those aspects of your life will be affected. eg if your ascendant sign is Libra, your Cancer will be the 10th house so expect turbulence in your work and social activities. Then the Leo will be in the 11th house so expect sudden changes in your financial gains.

Sun rules Leo, so for some time before and after a solar eclipse, Leo sign suffers. Depending on which aspects of your life it represents, you may be suddenly depressed, lack vitality, health may suffer, sudden losses in financial transactions, insomnia, lack of mental peace, quarrels etc. If Leo is in the Ascendant /Moon /Sun sign you will feel even worse. You will regain your energy a few days after the eclipse, however it is best to be careful for at least a fortnight.

Moon owns Cancer. So if your birth Moon sign or ascendant sign is Cancer you might be even worse off. Cancer borns are closely linked to the Moon transits and in addition feel the effects of the no-moon/Amavasya and full-moon/ Pournima more intensely. You have to be careful. If Cancer is in the Ascendant or Moon sign in your horoscope take special care of your physical body, immediate environment, do not engage in dangerous sports, be careful around ‘liquids’, e.g. blood related conditions, do not go for swimming, refrain from over intake of alcohol, etc around eclipses. If its is your birth Moon sign then you will feel the emotional effects, your astral body bears the brunt. Sleep might be affected, disturbed dreams and astral travel can make it difficult for you. I have observed that Cancer-Sun’s are also affected to some extent.

If the eclipse is occurring in the actual sign in your Ascendant/ Moon/ Sun house or in the house diametrically opposite from this, here are some general indications, (1st and 7th axis). An eclipse in the 1st-7th axis can also cause death depending on the individual horoscope.

  • An eclipse in the actual house involves your personality and your environment. If Rahu is placed here you will over-do the things associated with your own self, unnecessary risky activities getting you into trouble. So try to remain balanced and act logically. If Ketu is here then you will ignore things which are actually important to you and thus get into trouble. Try to focus even if you don’t feel like, go through things twice so that you don’t make avoidable mistakes.
  • Eclipses in the house opposite will affect your legal partnerships, marriage and businesses. Again depending on if it is Rahu or Ketu influencing this house you will feel your legal partner’s behaviour changing temporarily. He might try to over-whelm, dominate, cheat you or get disinterested and temporarily break up with you. Finances may be affected. Either way remember that the eclipse effects are temporary, so you should not overreact and make the situation worse.

An eclipse in the 2nd-8th axis. Just a few lines to help trigger your own thought process.

  • Eclipse occurring in the 2nd house can cause financial difficulties or wind-falls. Separation from the families or intense family times. It can also time the death event so should avoid taking unnecessary risks. There will be scope for increasing social visibility depending on if Rahu/Ketu gets placed here. Rahu is attraction and Ketu is apathy. So in the couple of weeks before and after the eclipse be careful of your financial situation do not take risks on this front.
  • Eclipses in the eighth house can cause accidents, surgeries, healings or death. These are intense energies and the 8th called the ‘Randhra’, this means a vulnerable or assailable point. Anything connected to the 8th becomes your vulnerable point. Or a point of vulnerability which you can sense on others and use. You might benefit by deaths of others or secrets of others. Hidden opportunities might be made available to you but do refer to your conscience before actually taking advantage of these. You might gain or lose but on a very intense scale.

Eclipse in your chart’s 3-9 axis.

  • The 3rd house is the choices which are available to you in life. If Rahu – eclipse is in your 3rd house you might see options in life opening up and you might be tempted to take more risks here. Speculations might give short term gains so take care to capitalise on the few weeks of eclipse energy. If it were Ketu-eclipse in the 3rd your interactions in the neighbourhood and extended family can cause issues. So be alert and nip things in the bud before they erupt.
  • An eclipse in the 9th house can cause turmoil in the life-foundation. This can be a crisis in the spiritual life which will open more options for you in your inner philosophical development. You might suddenly get very overtly religious or shun religion altogether. You opinions and understanding of what is good/bad, moral/immoral will be shaken up and questioned. Ancestral debts, spirits may come up and you might be required to pay them.

Eclipse energy in the 4th and 10th house axis can release a lot of useable energy if you harness it well, else the potential problems can be quite bad.

  • The 4th is connected to emotional and physical security. All eclipse events always affect your sense of comfort. You are forced out of your comfort zone, as unpleasant and heavy energies are triggered around you. There may be a crisis in your home, your mother, lands, properties. Vehicles can be affected do not take risks while driving. You might buy or sell some of the things which provide you with emotional/physical security.
  • An eclipse in the 10th house can give gains on the social front, you might be recognised for your work, maybe a bonus. Here Rahu and Ketu both can give good results if Saturn or the 10th house owner is well placed.

Eclipse energies in the 5th and 11th houses can confer rare opportunities to showcase your genuis.

  • If Rahu is occulting in the 5th house, you might be impelled to put yourself in the public eye, to express your creativity, glamour and glitz. Gambling and similarly high risk activities will attract. However you should remember that the window of opportunity will be short so make the most of it, know when to stop. Try to not break too many rules. Ketu if occulting in the 5th can cause initial gains but then this can turn to sudden failures because of disinterest. However gains on the spiritual front are quite possible.
  • Eclipses in the 11th house will bring you in the focus of everyone who knows you in some way or the other. You will gain material stuff if Rahu is active here, gains of every sort. You can do more as you are given more freedom. Ketu here can give short term gains of high magnitude. So if you have an eclipse on the 5th/11th axis of your birth chart, be ready to take advantage of the opportunities which will turn up.

Eclipse energy in the 6th-12th axis. This is the most sensitive axis of your horoscope. Karma overload and demands for service. Health should be carefully monitored during the weeks before and after an intense eclipse in the 6th -12th axis of your birth chart.

  • The 6th house is the karma you have chosen to rebalance in this life. You are very sensitive here as imbalance reigns here. Ghosts from your past, disease, debts, enemies will be brought into the foreground. You might fall more ill or might recover from some long standing illness. This will depend on your own horoscope and if it was Rahu/ Ketu placed in that house during the eclipse.
  • The 12th house is loss of the physical and gain of the astral. You will suffer some pain, sleep and rest will be affected. Disturbances in dreams astral travel etc is all possible. Life threatening incidents are possible.

So if there are eclipses around, do some spiritual practice or some mantra-jaap of Rahu/ Ketu and the Sun/ Moon. Use the energies of the eclipse, a huge chunk of energy is literally exploding across the skies during this period. If you do not channelise this energy properly with your conscious intentions it can cause disturbances in your life.  Eclipses occur very rarely so why this emphasis on them? That is because these events release humongous amounts of energies in a very short span of time, hours. If you use them actively, you can catapult yourself to such unimaginable heights.

Vaat Kapha Pitta in Ayurved and Astrology

Ayurved is the knowledge of vitality, movement, vigour, divinity, life and living beings. Indians have used Ayurvedic principles to remain healthy in mind and spirit since time immemorial. The tri-dosh, Vaat, Kapha Pitta is a basic concept in Ayurved. ‘Dosh’ means defect, disorder, error, inconvenience, disease etc. If these Vaat, Kapha and Pitta remain in equilibrium, the body remains healthy. But generally these are out of balance because your chart and it’s planets interfere. Each planet is Vata, Kapha or Pitta by nature. So depending on their relative strengths in your chart, one of these dosh will dominate your body and mind.

Vaat Kapha Pitta in Ayurved and Astrology

Vaat

Vaat is ‘movement’ (Vaat means wind, wish etc). All the things that move in the body are intelligently managed by this energy ‘Vaat’. The movement of your thoughts to the movement of food within your intestines. Movement of blood, urine, hormones, muscles, impulses in the nerves, all that moves in the body. The movement of mind leads to emotions, creativity, speech etc. Vaat is responsible for movement of the vital energy/pran in the body. (So if you are doing Dhyan you have to be aware of how much Vaat inducing activities you are doing, this will adversely affect your Dhyan.)

If there is imbalance in Vaat, you will feel the effects first in the digestive system, nervous system, ears (equilibrium of the body is affected), especially the joints of the skeletal system and the skin (you may not realise it, but your skin moves the maximum). Planets contributing to the Vaat tendency are Saturn, Venus, Mercury and Moon. If these or their signs are strongly placed in your chart, they will unbalance the Vaat, Pitta Kapha equilibrium, to create a more ‘airy’ personality with the following keywords,

  1. Dry – dry skin and hair, constipation, rough gravelly voice, hiccups
  2. Light– thin body frame, light sleep, under weight, needs to rest more
  3. Cold– hates cold and loves warm, stiffness in muscles and joints
  4. Rough– cracked heels, brittle nails, uneven teeth
  5. Nervous– easily excited, imaginative, anxious, muscle tremors, delicate health, less children
  6. Fast– alert, speech, gait, restless, mood swings, travels, too many thoughts in mind, active, cannot save money.
  7. Alone– experiences loneliness, doesn’t have faith in a higher intelligence.

If these keywords have resonated with you then here are some simple tips which you can incorporate in your daily life.

  • Warmth – dress warmly, spicy, hot, slightly oily food (no cold foods)
  • Keep calm – massages, spa, saunas, stick to a comfortable routine, do not travel too much. Spend some quiet and quality time with your close family and loved ones.
  • Rest – You require more sleep, so aim for 8+ hrs. Try to keep away from loud sounds, bright lights, addictions and over-stimulation.

Vaat Kapha Pitta in Ayurved and Astrology

Pitta

Now Pitta is the ‘conversion process’. (Pitta means bile.) Everything that the mind/body ‘converts’ and makes ‘suitable for itself’ is through the energy of Pitta. So this covers the process of digestion and all the enzymes in the body are ‘converters’. Then on the mental level the process of converting sensory inputs to intelligence, then the ‘thinking process’ converts the ideas to understanding. This ‘conversion process’ also creates ‘heat’, so makes one sparkle with health, vitality, intelligence and wisdom. The planets contributing to the pitta in your life would be Sun, Mars and Mercury. If these are strong, or their signs are strongly placed in your chart you might be a pitta dominant personality.

So for our pitta personality our keywords would be related to ‘fire’,

  1. Hot– good digestive system, strong appetite, higher than average body temperature, dislikes more heat or bright light, receding hairline or baldness
  2. Sharp– sharp and bright features and face, sharp memory and understanding, probing mind,
  3. Oily– oily soft skin and hair, deep-fried food causes headaches
  4. Fluid– tendency to loose motions, excessive sweating, needs to drink lots of water, rashes on skin, hot skin, desires name and fame
  5. Reds /Yellows– tends to have flushed skin, often overproduction of bile
  6. Fire– acidity, excess salivation, bitter taste, nausea, burning sensations, cynical by nature, strong feelings of anger/ hate.
  7. Intelligence – excellent abilities for learning, understanding and concentrating, highly disciplined, make large amounts of money, spends on luxurious items.

To keep your ‘hot’ planets and signs ‘cool’, here are a few tips.

  • Cooling – Eat non-spicy, non-salty, non-oily foods especially in summer. Avoid going out in the summer sun. Aggression will aggravate pitta, so if you see a discussion turning into an argument use your intelligence and defuse the situation in a healthier manner.
  • Exercise in moderation and during the coolest part of the day and opt for the swimming pool. Your temper runs short, so try some some calming breathing exercises too.

Vaat Kapha Pitta in Ayurved and AstrologyKapha

Kapha is ‘fluidity which creates structure’. It is simultaneously ‘earthy’ and ‘watery’. All the cells, tissues and organs of the body and the ‘fluidity’ which links them together is Kapha. Lubrication of joints and organs, strong muscles and bones, cellular secretions, and memory retention. Planets with kapha tendency are Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus. If these and their signs are strongly placed in your chart your mind/body may lean towards imbalance in the kapha.

  1. Heavy, slow and steady – movement, appetite, thirst, metabolism and digestion. A large body frame, possibly overweight but compact. A lubricated smooth movement of the joints. A heavy deep but sweet voice. Likes sitting and sleeping, can get lazy. A sense of density, ‘thickness’. Mind is contemplative, peaceful, slow to react. Often slow to start, is dull in the mornings. Has good knowledge, memory and also a strong constitution.
  2. Fluids – cold and congestion, clammy skin, water retention, over-production of saliva and mucus. Oily skin and hair. Diseases related to the ‘water’, sinus, sluggishness, excess weight, diabetes, water retention, headaches, especially on full moon days and when the weather is overcast and gloomy.
  3. Smooth and soft – skin, calm nature, gentle mind, pleasing look, compassionate, caring, kind, sometimes gullible.
  4. Cohesive – Firm body, joints, muscles. Likes physical contact, hugging cuddling. Mind is deeply attached in love and relationships. Saves money. Has a deep faith in the higher intelligence. Can get greedy and emotionally needy if unbalanced.
  5. Sweet and salty – is quite sensual in nature, craves sweet and salty food but digestion being slow puts on weight which is then difficult to shed as dislikes vigorous exercise.

Here are some small things which will help you balance your kapha tendencies.

  • Move – Exercise, walk, be a bit more active, read new things, learn new things. Vary your routine, do something exciting at least one day a week, e.g. go to a museum, go for a day-tour, visit your family/friends, go for a movie. Move!
  • Diet – Eat warm, light, moderately spicy, easy to digest foods. Avoid heavy, fatty and overly sugary-salty foods. Reduce the intake of milk/milk products and avoid cold drinks/food.
  • Sleep – Try to reduce your sleep time, stick to 8hrs no more, and no daytime naps!

So this was a very basic and simple to understand/ use post on Ayurved. If you are getting a bit interested in astrology by now and know how to read your chart, then you can also try balancing the planetary energies with the activitiesfragrances, colors and tastes associated with them. This will balance the subtle energies which are the seeds of Vaat, Pitta and Kapha and thus help you be healthier from the deepest levels. And finally, a regular spiritual practice, even for 5 mins a day, will go a long way in keeping you happy and healthy!

Arth Trikon of the horoscope

The 12 houses of the horoscope are divided into the Dharma Trikon, houses 1, 5 and 9. The Arth Trikon houses 2, 6 and 10. The Kama Trikon houses 3, 7 and 11 and the Moksh Trikon houses 4, 8 and 12.

The finances of a chart can be accurately predicted using the Arth Trikon, the Triangle of Finances. These are the houses number 2, 6 and 10 counted from the ascendant. These houses will give the physical environments and tangible effects related to making money and earning your income. If you count these same 2, 6, and 10 from your birth moon sign they will provide an indicator on how you feel about your finances, your perceptions about money and the means of earning wealth. And your divisional chart 9/Navamsha will indicate the potential and the astral expectations regarding finance.

Arth is a Sanskrit word thus has several meanings including – true sense, objects of desire, concerns and senses. So though we consider the Arth trikon in the narrow sense of finances it includes all your significant possessions.

At the deepest levels these 3 houses are the places where you search for the real meaning of your existence.

The Second House

The 2rd house from the ascendant is the house of family resources. Kutumbh/family and Dhana/wealth is the 2nd house. The natural ruler of this house is Venus, as Taurus is the second sign of the Zodiac. Venus is the Lord of Treasuries and Sensual Pleasures here. Food, drink, speech, beauty, songs and stories are in his domain. Time spent with your family and friends. Your memory, knowledge and flair for business is seen from here.

You search for the meaning of your life in the treasures you collect, the fun times you spend.

This is the first interaction that you have with wealth and its role. Do you have access to your family’s treasury, its assets and warehouses? Your position in your extended family and neighbourhoods is naturally dependent on your family’s financial status. Here you are taught how to make money, conserve it, multiply it and also to spend it. Accounting, balance sheets, banking and inventories. All sorts of moveable assets, monies and material, are governed by this house. Often this is the seed capital on which you start your own local small business.

An analysis of this house tells a lot. Several families contribute their assets and resources to create a common land of comfort and security. Local trades and interactions of brotherhood create an emotional bonding. These then in turn contribute to even more increase in the wealth of the family treasuries. If this house is strong, you are very comfortable exhibiting your assets, intelligence, genius, creativity and luck. However there is a very real possibility that the wealth and beauty of the 2nd can create a sense of servitude, and you may get trapped in these external objects. These also have the potential to create debts and enemies.

Equitable partnerships are not considered very highly by this house because you are the hoarder, the collector here. Here the desired partner is the one who can increase and transform your treasures dramatically, often in secret. The theories and philosophies of humanities and your peer groups and patrons have the potential to transform you, but you are wary of them. Rather you look on your father figures as persons who make you work. A strong 2nd grants a deep understanding of the social hierarchies and organisational theories with the core professional competence being in trade and acquisitions. You befriends those who are outside the mainstream, travellers, ascetics and energy-workers who can be of benefit.

And the strangest, the personality itself consumes the resources of the 2nd house. You use the hoarded treasuries indicated by the 2nd house to boost yourself in your society.

Arth Trikon of the horoscope

The Sixth house

This is the house of turmoil, dushamsthana. Some consider the 8th or 12th houses to be the worst, my opinion is the 6th is the house where you have the worst experiences of slavery, servitude, debts, diseases and enemies. So how does this relates to your ‘significant possessions’? Simple, this house is where you add to them or even lose them! But the problem is that you may be the doctor or the patient, still you have to be in the depressing environment of the hospital. Serve or suffer.

You search for the meaning of your life in being of service to others. Mercury the natural ruler of the 6th house of the zodiac, Virgo, exerts his influence.

So this house is where you can use the assets given to you in the 2nd creatively and generate wealth for yourself. The environment where you do this may not be very lively but if your 2nd and 6th are both strong you will focus on the wealth generation aspect exclusively. This house profits when there are losses in partnerships and balance in environments of secrecy, catastrophic changes and unforeseeable changes. However here stability is provided in philosophy and in the company of peers, patrons and father figures.

Choose the profession where you can use the energies of this house creatively and gainfully. A overly strong 6th however will reduce your friends and like minded groups. Working too hard I guess, gives no time for speculation and also you wont be able to explore multiple sources for income. You partner best with those who are facing losses on their personality and physical existence. Naturally if you are a doctor your partner from who you gain is the patient! The energies of this house reduce the personality and often you are a faceless cog in the scheme of things. Or on the other hand if your 1st house is also strong enough you can be well-known as a prominent lawyer, doctor or a human rights activist.

The Tenth house

The natural 10th house is Capricorn ruled by Saturn. Here you use the energies of your 6th house creatively to create for yourself social position, social mobility, a profession and a regular income too.

You try to find the real meaning of your life in image you create for yourself in the society and the work you do for the public.

This hard work you put in this house is amply rewarded and you gain financially, materially, spiritually, socially etc, as your interactions with wider groups increase. Your interest in trade/speculation, business-like activities, interactions with your extended family will reduce. The hard work you put in will give comforts and security for your own self. Your personal family will also enjoy the fruits of your labour. As you grow older, you will be more able to balance your professional life and home life.

However working in the defined environment of your profession with an eye out for social acceptability will adversely affect your link to your internal higher self and sources of divine intelligence. Doing good work in the 10th, you will be able to provide support and stability to people who are suffering. A strong 10th house increases reliance on rules, hard work and slow/steady progress.

Arth Trikon of the horoscope

The trikons are the 5-9 linkages of each other. They represent the creative expressions and deepest philosophies of each other.

  • The 6th is the creative expression of the 2nd, the 10th is the creative expression of the 6th and the 2nd is again the creative expression of the 10th.
  • The 10th is counted 9th from the 2st, the 6th is counted 9th from the 10th and the 2nd is counted 9th from the 6th. Thus they are the foundations of each other.

In horoscope analysis this 5-9 axis is very important. For analysing every house do take into account the placement 5th and 9th from it. This will tell you how the potential assets of that house are converted into visible creative expressions. These visible actions are then again analysed with newer ways of thinking and converted to deep philosophies. i.e. The foundations of the visible existence. This 5-9 cycle is the cycle of evolution of the chart.
