Karma from the ancestors

The ‘family’ related houses in your horoscope are

the 2nd house – the actual family in which you have been born, its status in society, the wealth and power wielded by your family. Also the ways you will contribute by your own actions of hoarding and accumulating treasure. (If you are adopted or fostered or put in a boarding school or at some relative’s house or for some reason separated from your birth family you should also check out the 9th house.) Venus is the natural ruler of this house and subtly contributes to the dignity and benefits from this house, so analyse Venus, his position and power in the chart. If he is with malefics/benefics, if placed in a difficult house, the planets aspecting/conjoint him, is he retrogradecombust etc.

the 3rd house – the siblings, brothers/sisters and the cousins in general. Also your boldness in conducting yourself in these affairs of the the extended family. This is a function of Mercury in the case of siblings, he is also the natural ruler of the 3rd house of the zodiac. And Mars in the case of specifically brothers.

the 4th house – the mother, everything to do with your emotional comforts and security in all ways. The Moon is the agent of the mother so do analyse his placement and position. If he is placed in the dushamstan i.e. 6th, 8th, 12th. Or with malefics, natural or temporary. Also if he is debilitated or eclipsed or in a Gandant. I have seen cases where Moon was placed badly and the children suffering quite severely because of the mother.

the 5th house – the children, of the DNA or of the soul, and all the ways you pass on your creativity. The natural ruler of this house is the Sun so check out his power to give results in the horoscope. Do you have the divine intelligence and inspiration to carry on your legacy by producing offspring?

the 7th house – the husband or wife, your Dharm-pati or Dharm-patni. This is marriage the Vivah Sanskar, and in Vedic context of Jyotish requires a man and a woman. This directly leads to production of children of your DNA. In the case of a person’s union with the spiritual self, this house will lead to the production of the children of the soul. The natural planets connected to this house are Mars, Venus and Jupiter.

the 9th house – the ancestors, the father-like figures in your life who support and guide you in your life. The real teacher/Guru who makes you dwij/twice-born. This is the domain of Jupiter.

the 10th house – the father and everything to do with this one person in your life. There have been cases where a bad father has caused trauma to his children. Also the Sun is naturally linked to this house. However the natural owner of this house is Saturn thus influences this house wherever he may be placed.

These are the closest relations who make up your family. Your personal karma is linked to your heredity, to all the ancestors, so if your birth time is absolutely precise, the divisional chart 12 will give you your answers. Analyse the position of the mother and the father from the D-12 chart to know about the specific karma linked to your mother’s and father’s family. If you are inclined, you can go in-depth using the D-40 for the mother’s family and the D-45 for the precise karma linked to the father’s side of the family. Your personal individual karma is seen from D-60.familyFirst analyse is 9th house, the house of foundations or Bhagya/fortune. Now the 1st house is the 5th house counted from the 9th, thus your manifested physical body, life and social standing etc is an expression of the actions/inspiration/intelligence of the agents of the 9th house. Your ancestors/pitr, you carry their genes, their culture, their property/assets, their name in the society etc. If there are problems in the 9th house they will cause serious impacts on your entire existence. I have written on how to completely analyse a house in your horoscope earlier so try it with the 9th house of the chart.

The Dharma trikon is mainly affected so analyse your ascendant/1st house then your 5th house. Your existence is derived from your ancestors and your children are derived from you and then you become an ancestor to your children, it is cyclic.

Most of these karmic effects relate to the ‘fortune’, marriage and children. These include susceptibility to magic, nightmares, possession by spirits. Then late marriages or multiple marriages, divorces, impotency. Further abortions, miscarriages, disabled children, death of young children, no sons. Mental problems, suicides, diseases with no cures, addictions etc. Children getting married to unsuitable men/women, running away, or getting widowed in young age, or having multiple affairs, falling into prostitution, getting involved in ‘moral crimes’ which go against the conscience. Legal issues and complications in courts. Fights and ill-will within the family members etc.

If you see any family with such events, the charts of the people will show some common points. Significantly strong malefics in the 9th, 1st or 5th houses. The most potent combination is Rahu/Ketu in these houses with some other malefic force giving them direction. Then more malefic influences on the other houses depending on which problems they are going through. e.g. If someone is going through a karmic linked disease, the 8th house will be further affected. If he has lost property because of litigations, the 4th and 7th will be further damaged. If he is not getting a stable income and loss of status in profession/society is the 10th house etc.

Most of these issues are caused due to ‘family curses’, or more appropriately some karma which was supposed to be done by or for the ancestor which is pending. Most commonly it is that funeral rites were not performed thus the soul is trapped on earth. This can be truly disastrous, sometimes ancient houses are haunted. Or some ancestor did some terrible thing/negative karma for which the entire generation is suffering. Maybe murdered someone, I have seen this the husband killed the wife a few generations ago and there were problems for the present generation. Or something which was due but was not repaid by some ancestor. familyBut this is not the whole story.

Why should you suffer because of some mistake your ancestor did? In fact you dont! You are suffering because of your own Karma, you created some negative karma like, aborting a child, not performing funeral rites for someone you were required to, not repaying things which you should have, committed suicide, raped someone, prostituted someone, produced children and then did not acknowledge them, abandoning your parents or wife/husband, or someone dependant on you, misused your knowledge to harm someone, even trapped spirits to use them against their will, in short did something so deep, so much against your Dharm, that in this life you have sealed off the gentler means of balancing karma.

Your own conscience/Antaratma judged you and you are now being made to go through the same thing yourself. When you have endured a significant portion of the karma, you will be given the chance to balance off the remaining through pujas/mantra/charity etc the energy route.

The 9th house not only represents the ancestors but it is all that you are going to receive in your current life because of the actions from your past lives, good bad or indifferent.

(Will continue in my next post)

familyThis is in response to this comment I received in the Contact page, “Dear astrologer-by-default,
I love reading your posts and there’s so much to learn! Can you write about ancestral trauma and parental wounds…how they influence our life and ways to heal them? Thanks in advance.”

How to not create Karma?

(This is in response to this Comment I received in the Contact form: Excellent post on medical astrology! Could you write about placements/nakshatras/planets that incline individuals towards the metaphysical and occult pursuits of life? How does one balance karma doing so and not get into karmic entanglements?)

Karma is the bogeyman! If something goes wrong with you, your neighbour will be like (a tad gleefully),’ it’s your karma, you have to face it!”. Or if your friends feel that you have got something going for you which you don’t deserve, they will be like, “this is your good karma from your past lives!”. Sometimes you will give Rs 5/- to a beggar to create good karma for yourself. Spiritually inclined people on the other hand are wary of creating more karma of any sort. However beautiful it may look, Karma is entanglement with others because of your desires/conditioning.

I have written a post on how to judge spirituality from the horoscope here. Metaphysics, I guess means ‘spirituality’, the things which cannot be perceived by our limited 5 senses. Desire to achieve Moksh is antithetical to living a comfortable life in the physical universe. It is obvious I think, when you have filled your store houses with all the experiences that the manifested Universe has to offer, when you have enjoyed all the relationships to the fullest, you leave . Combinations which may not be seen as favourable for the ‘real-life’ things will be conducive to the spiritual route. The spiritual route is the way out. All planets and houses contribute in some way to this ‘spirituality’. (will write about the astrological combinations related to ‘occult’ in my next post)

If there is a background of reasonably good level of ‘spirituality’ in the horoscope the chances of creating a load of negative karma will lessen. You will be less entangled and/or whatever karma is binding you, will resolve.karmaHow to not create new karma? Shri Krishna is quite clear in his Bhagwat Gita. To condense it in one statement, ‘Do your Dharm’. But as Bhishma says in the same Mahabharat, ‘Dharm is subtle’. After these two statements which say it all, I can just add my very limited thoughts and experiences.

The problem of recognition – There is a rather unfortunate (from the spiritual point of view) expectation that one needs to be recognised for doing their work. Simple example, I am a mother so am expected to take care of my child, pack his tiffin, give him Sanskar, etc. This is my Dharm. When I do all this my conscience is satisfied. I do not expect my son to thank me for this. I have done my Dharm.

And because it is my Dharm, I am supposed to do it, so there should be no sense of ego about doing it. Should I be awarded for doing something that I am supposed to be doing in the first place? If I leave my child unattended and neglect him, my conscience will point it out to me. If I ignore my conscience, it will be registered as a negative Karma. Only my conscience/Antaratma has the power to judge my actions, no one else.

The problem of expectations – It is human nature, one might say, to expect and anticipate. And then later to get disappointed. It is not being pessimistic, e.g. however well my son performs I might think it is less. He works hard in school and gets an A grade, but I might get disappointed as I want him to get a A+ grade! (Several parents think like this and cause deep-seated traumas in their child.)

Karma is caused because of human nature. I might say, “I looked after my child, now as I get old, he is bound to look after me”. This sort of thought process will cause needless pain. I had written a post on forgiveness earlier. I should focus on my own action now, not bother about my son’s possible future actions. If I do my Dharm because I expect my son to follow his Dharm later, this is a negative thought process. I should do my Dharm because I should do it, for no other reason.

The problem of emotions – Dharm/Karma concepts do not mean that I am a robot, without emotions. When my conscience is satisfied with my actions it gives me deeper satisfaction and joy not linked to the ego. ‘I did my job perfectly’ is ego. But ‘circumstances came about perfectly and enabled me to do my job’ is a better thought process. I should give credit to the Universe for bringing the exact resources to me so that I could cook food and make my child’s tiffin. This way I remain grounded. (And remembering a previous life where I was very poor helps in reinforcing this thought process!). I should feel happy, sad, irritated, dejected, guilty, anxious, etc, but with the over-riding awareness that this too shall pass. I try to not get attached to these emotions very deeply because these are quite temporary. And to feel an inner joy in every action that I perform, it takes a bit of work but I try the best I can.

The problem of blaming others – This happens a lot with the clients I see. We all refuse to accept responsibility for our actions, most often in inter-personal relationships with the people closest to us. And the people closest to us are linked with the biggest karmic link.

The narrative is the same, ‘my wife argues so I argue with her’. But then, ‘Focus on what you are doing. You are also arguing and reinforcing the karmic link. So you will be stuck with this same argumentative wife in your next life too! Do you want this? Instead try to talk through and resolve it like mature grown-ups’. Getting a client to understand this idea of karma is utterly difficult. I think they enjoy arguing at their inner levels.

I do this too, get trapped in activity/mental/emotional loops, but recognising this as a loop is the first step.

YOLO? You (certainly do not) live only once! No one goes anywhere, every act/feeling is recorded in the astral self. If I feel/act very with strong attachments it will be recorded strongly. If I behave irresponsibly because I think ‘I live only once’, it can create loads of karma for the future lives. So it is best to think twice about the thought processes and philosophical base of the life/actions.

Being independent – If I know what I am supposed to do/my Dharm, I am free. My actions are not dependant on other people. I know my role and I know that I am doing it to the best of my ability. Later even if my boss says that I haven’t done my part, my conscience knows that I have! I cannot be made to feel bad by the other’s behaviour. So listening to the conscience, not the ego is key.

Follow your conscience. And because we are so used to being deaf to our inner voice, we all need to do some tiny regular spiritual activity or be with nature so that we remain silent and listen to our conscience speak.

Dharma Trikon of the horoscope.

The 12 houses of the horoscope are divided into the Dharma Trikon, houses 1, 5 and 9. The Arth Trikon houses 2, 6 and 10. The Kama Trikon of houses 3, 7 and 11 and the Moksh Trikon houses 4, 8 and 12.brown house surrounded by snow covered field near snow covered mountain under yellow blue and orange sunsetEvery human needs these 4 categories of activities to live a reasonably comfortable and happy life. These are Sanskrit words so have layers of meanings and cannot be translated exactly. However, broadly Dharma is the foundation of your life, from the physical environments to the spiritual principles and the deepest understanding of these. Arth is all the hoards, the income, finances and wealth, all the assets and treasuries that you build up on ever level the physical, emotional spiritual etc, and also your understanding of these. Kama is the all the desires that you have, desires ranging from company of friends, interaction with the society, with the spouse and to being with your own Self. These desires also operate on all levels. And finally Moksh, the closure of every aspect of this life, the ultimate understanding of each aspect and also the foundations that you lay down in the astral which will serve as the seeds of your next life experience.

Dharm trikon/triangle is the three houses, 1, 5 and 9 and the aspects of your life that they indicate. Here you decide your personal dharma/Swadharma. (The universal Dharma is called Rita). You choose what is right for you, the right social context, the right creativity and the right philosophies.

The First House

The 1st natural house of the zodiac is Aries, and its ruler Mars, so Aries and Mars wherever they may be located will have a subtle influence on the matters of the 1st house, in addition the actual sign and its planetary ruler.

The 1st house is the house of your personality, the energy of your physical manifestation, the beauty of your face, your skin, complexion, the proportions of your body. Your physical appearance the muscle strength the vitalness, the competitive energies, basically the force of your personality expressed in every way possible. The energies of the Annamaya-kosha, the layer of your body which is visible to the eyes are the 1st house or the ascendant. The 1st house also has its say on how your body and mind can enjoy what is available to you. Do you permit yourself the capacity to enjoy pleasure or pain! Do you have significant personal integrity? Also are you honorable and dependable? This house lays the foundation of your physical life. This is the house of beginnings and the potential that you derive from your birth. Your birth circumstances, social status and the role you are expected to perform in the society. The experience of your early childhood. All of this is connected to the assets you have accumulated in your immediate past life.

How you feel about your social position? Do you actively work to improve it or damage it further? How do others treat you as a matter of routine? Is your voice heard in your social setting? Social ranking is also related to material accomplishment and contributes to your ego. Thus what society thinks of you, determines your quality of life experiences.

This house is counted 5th from the 9th house, thus is the expression of the guidance and philosophies that you have chosen for yourself and guided in this by your Guru, paternal figures, patrons and peers. It is the 9th from the 5th house so is the summation of the deeper understanding of your own creative forces and your active use of them.

Ultimately you desire social validation and use your physical attributes to compete, this lays the foundation of your social personality. The domain of the 1st house.pexels-photo-42240.jpegThe Fifth House

This is the house of your creative expressions. The natural zodiac sign here is Leo, ruled by the Sun. So Leo and Sun wherever they may be located will have a subtle influence on the matters of the 5th house.

You are known by your actions, you maybe famous or notorious, both are expressions of your personal creative actions. You will be made visible through your behaviour e.g. a leader with power or performing arts like dances, theatre, musical compositions. Or you will be made visible by your channelising of abstract divine intelligence, your scholarship, publications drawing, painting and writing. This is the house of being Visible, the natural ruler is the Sun!

The 5th also indicates your higher education. Training in skills, practice and preparation. guidance from parents and teachers, personal focus and also your confidence which comes from a secure childhood environment. And then the capacity to think and to convert what you been taught into new actions. All this provides you a platform for your accomplishments which will be then recognised socially.

Another function of the 5th is to create new ways of using information/intelligence and also drive the society as such to a newer understanding of civilisation. Also to create new children who will live in this newer version of civilisation.

(One point to be noted here. I have seen charts with auspicious placements concerning 5th house but having no children. The more powerful this house is, the more will you be inclined to use its energies for high art, high intellectual expression, superb performances, or great spiritual/political leaderships, rather than producing children from your own physical body. If you observe, genuine and great achievers in any field (artists/leaders/sadhus/etc) have no or limited physical children, if they have any they will engage nannies to take care of them.)

This house is the 5th from the 1st house, thus obviously is the creative expression of the personality. It is also the 9th from the 9th, thus is the foundation of auspiciousness and all sorts of fortune/Bhagya in the horoscope.

This is the house of your speculative creativity and its resultant fame. The Glory of your Ego.pexels-photo-826345.jpegThe Ninth House

This is the theoretical basis of your life, here you choose the creed you live by here. The natural zodiac sign here is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter. So Sagittarius and Jupiter wherever they may be located will have a subtle influence on the matters of the 9th house.

Your belief system which has developed out of your own creative processes and the religious system that you relate you.The paternal figures whom you choose and really respect as a father-figure (Biological father is the 10th house, you do not have a choice in this). This is the house of the Guru, the one who teaches you wisdom. (Modern education is not about wisdom, it is more the 3rd house). The help and support that the society will give you, your peers and patrons and the elders who help you further your place in society.

The philosophies which are your own (the ideas you were trained in are seen from the 4th house). The ancestral wisdom that derives from the ancestors of your current life and the wisdom you have garnered throughout your own past lives. This is the house of sustained study, deep contemplation and the intention of Dharma. You want to know the deepest possible in the domain of study here which may not have any direct practical application but is the foundation of all your mental processes. Your moral wisdom, your sense of humanity and your associations with similarly philosophical persons and institutions. Your understanding of the divine-human association is the 9th.

Your Bhagya/auspiciousness. The 9th house indicates the best of the best associations that you have created for yourself.pexels-photo-774283.jpegAll the 4 types of trikons are based on creative expressions. Example, in the Dharma trikon, the 5th is the creative expression of the 1st, the 9th is the creative expression of the 5th and the 1st is again the creative expression of the 9th. Each house is counted 5th from the other. This is true for all the trikons. All the 4 types of trikons are also based on philosophies and deepest understandings. Example, the Dharma trikon, 9th is counted 9th from the 1st, the 5th is counted 9th from the 9th and the 1st is counted 9th from the 5th. Thus they are the deepest understanding and philosophical depths of each other.

In horoscope analysis this 5-9 axis is very important. For analysing every house do take into account the placement 5th and 9th from it. These represent the conversion of all the manifested/subtle assets of that house into new visible creative expressions. These visible actions are then again analysed with newer ways of thinking and converted to deep philosophies. And these deep philosophies are then manifested in the physical realm. This cycle is the cycle of evolution and growth for every house and thus the entire personality.
