Birth – Death – Rebirth

The combinations related to physical death occur 2/3 times in a lifetime. If the soul is unhappy about the direction its life has taken, it can exit at these points. If the chart points to death at childhood or middle age, then there are mantra/pujas etc done to reduce the possibility of this happening. But when this combination occurs at old age then the soul will want to leave the aged and failing body. By this time, if it has chosen some disease to go through, this also will occur. birth death rebirthNow a seriously ill person, whether its symptoms are visible or not, will have an overall greyish and very thin aura. He might feel tired and easily exhausted in this stage. Especially so if it is within 6 months of the death. If he sits close but not touching, you won’t ‘feel’ his presence, he will ‘feel’ insubstantial, there will be no ‘heat‘ radiating from him. The organs which are being damaged will be an angry red color or grey or brown/black depending on how far they are damaged. But I would not advise you to ‘see’ so deeply into an ill person. Energy links and cords are created in an instant and they will be dangerous for you.

This ill person needs more pran/vital energy to improve the quality of his life. He will benefit by sitting in the early morning sunlight, massage by ayurvedic oils, fresh fruits (not contaminated by pesticides) etc can be added to the diet, listening, reading and reciting Sanskrit high energy mantra like Gayatri mantra or Mahamryutunjai mantra or Vishnusahastranam, would be good. Performing yadnyas/homa intended to help him and using the vibhuti will also add pran to him. Healing methods like self-reiki, using crystal grids etc will also help. If possible he can shift to a place with natural energy, seaside forests etc where the air is rich in pran. If he can do some spiritual practice too on his own it will magnify all the healing being done on him. (This would be in addition to the medical advice.) This may or may not change the time of death but will improve the quality of life till then. The more pran you flood your body with the more healthy you will be.

The current age we live in is extremely polluted in several ways. The food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe in our cities has very little amount of pran/vital energy. Even the clothes we wear are not natural, but  made of artificial fibres of non-compatible energy. We have stopped wearing leather shoes, we don’t go about barefoot, we do not ‘ground‘ ourselves. We don’t give time to ourselves, we don’t relax our brains, we don’t still our thoughts. Our temples are in ruins (successive invaders destroyed them and remaining ones are still being desecrated), there are no public yadnyas to purify the atmosphere around us. We don’t even have a small puja ghar in our modern houses and neither do we light a daily lamp/aarti in gratitude. We are insatiable in our pursuit of material fulfilment. (Perhaps, this same uncontrolled unregulated headlong rush, without a thought to consequences, is reflected in the behaviour of the cells causing cancer.)birth death rebirthIt is a fact of life that birth, death and rebirth will occur. We are all here to enjoy the entertainments created by Devi for us. In this we forget our real nature. But deep inside we know that we are missing something essential, we search for it. Some start their spiritual practices, think of balancing karma, and then achieve realisation/Moksh. Others search for satisfaction in the external material and repeat birth-death-rebirth.

When you arrive on this Martyalok, you choose the time, place and conditions of exit at that same instant. So to worry about parents, husband/wife, children, close relatives or even your personal exit is really not very productive. When you worry, you direct the energy of your thought in a negative direction. Instead try to reinforce positive thoughts and affirmations for yourself and your loved ones. Focus on what you decided on, do the best actions you can as per your conscience.

Birth and death are the two important moments in a person’s life. That is why we have a period called naatak (12 days after birth of new baby) and sutak (13 days after physical death of a close relative). In these periods, the boundaries of the two dimensions (Martyalok and Pitrulok) merge. The soul is transitioning and thus has access to energies from both these dimensions and other souls from the Pitrulok are also there to help it. You will also be helping by doing the pujas/mantra etc. This period belongs to the soul who is transitioning. I have closely seen several births and physical deaths in my family. If the family is composed and performs the rituals/mantra etc, it is easier for the soul. Unnecessarily mourning and creating tensions at this delicate period disturbs the soul which later will create problems.

I had written about a young woman’s death, she left behind a baby and a husband. The soul was promised by the family that the baby would be cared for and it left completely. And the baby is really being looked after very well. But her husband refuses to give away her clothes, keeps her photograph, thinks of her, grieves. And the emotional cord became so intense that the soul has been forced to come back. It is there in the house, quite cross about being called back. It tells my brother, who can see it, to convince the husband and that it is already looking forward to its next life. But her husband won’t listen and thus both her and his evolution has been blocked. And this is the real tragedy.birth death rebirthBut then Jyotish is so beautiful, so balanced. Combinations indicating exit from the physical body occur with time in planetary transist/ dashas and your chart prepares you for the break. If your close relatives are to exit, the combinations in your chart prepare your mindset subconsciously for separation with them. If you yourself are to exit, even then the chart prepares you internally for your break with the material. If you let ‘time’ guide you and not get emotional about it, you can actually appreciate the power that time/’Kaal’ has. The power of separation created by your own self is so powerful. So worrying about future separations from your loved ones or your physical self is not necessary.

The present life we live is just one stage in several many stages. The soul who is your mother may have been your neighbour, or your tailor could have been your daughter in some past life! We are all so busy being a father/mother, husband/wife, son/daughter that we never think of who we really are. So many thoughts in our minds, our minds working frantically every instant! Extended worry or grief or depression is not a normal human emotion. We are all made for happiness. Feel the happiness in everything you do. Those moments which you spend with your loved ones, cherish them, enjoy the present happiness that you have. Go for vacations in nature. If possible, develop a relationship with yourself, do some small regular spiritual practice.

And always remember your real nature is happiness. Be happy!

birth death rebirth

Timing death for close relations,

Sometimes you will get clients whose parents or near relations are seriously ill and they do not have the correct birth time available. So of course you will use the prashana kundali to analyse the health and recovery of the client’s relative. But sometimes it can be serious and you may see no chance of recovery. Predicting death in clear words is never advisable unless you are very sure, as it can break down the will power of the family/patient. Or later there might be doubts in your own mind if you did the correct thing by telling them what you saw.

Here is a simple way to recheck your grim predictions. So you do not have the birth details of the patient, and the prashana kundali indicates death. But you have the exact birth time of the patient’s son/daughter/brother/spouse. Look up this relative’s chart and find out which Mahadasha/ Antardasha and current transits are on for this relative.

The rulers of the 2nd and 7th houses counted from the ascendant are called the natural marak /death-inflicting planets and determine the timing of physical death of the body. If we count this second and seventh houses from other houses, then their owners can be used to indicate timing of death of the close relations signified by these houses.deathFirst using the Vimshottari system,

Spouse – Period of the ruler of the 1st house can cause death of the spouse. The 1st house is located seventh from the 7th house which represents the spouse. Also the period of the ruler of the 8th house of the native’s chart. (8th is second from 7th)

Mother– Period of the ruler of the 5th house can indicate the death of the mother. The 5th house is counted second from the 4th house. Also the period of the ruler of the 10th house (10th house is counted seventh from the 4th house).

Father – Period of the ruler of the 4th house can cause death of the person’s father. It is seventh counted from the 10th house. The 10th is the house of the father. Also the period of the ruler of the 11th house can be used for timing death of the biological father. (Some consider the 9th house to be the house of the father, but I have found that the 9th is more apt for father-figures, teachers, Guru/second-father/spiritual-father, ancestors, patrons etc. The biological father is better seen from the 10th house).

Siblings – Period of the ruler of the 4th house can cause death of the siblings, cousins, brothers. The 4th house is the second counted from the 3rd house. And the period of the ruler of the 9th house (counted seventh from the 3rd house).

Children – Unfortunately this also happens sometimes, parents have to go through the pain of seeing a child leave the body. In this case birth time would be available so you can check for longevity from the child’s chart itself. But as a secondary confirmation, you will find that in the parent’s charts, the 6th and 11th house lords periods/sub-periods can indicate the death of a child.

Now from the transits,

Check out the transits of the biggest separative graha, Ketu and the agent of constriction Saturn. e.g. Last year, Ketu was in Capricorn, counted fourth from Libra. I observed 3 clients with Libra ascendants bidding farewell to their mothers in this period of 1.5yrs. So check if you have Saturn or Ketu transiting houses which indicate close relations as per your birth chart, e.g. 1st house = self, 3rd = siblings, 4th = mother, 5th = children, 7th = wife/husband, 10th = father. Then check the chart of that person for longevity, if he has neared his/her allotted life-span, then death of the body might occur. If not then this combination will give temporary separation, e.g. living away for studies or work etc.

While analysing, look for patterns which repeat, one single combinations does not make a reading. There will be at least 2-3 combinations which will confirm the reading.

death(These are just a few tips to get you interested in analysis. No event occurs in isolation, all are interconnected. Always keep a database of your and extended family’s charts with you so that you can learn as events happen in their lives.)

Spirits and hauntings..

When someone dies, i.e. leaves the physical body, his soul/Jivatma exists in the Pirtulok/spirit world, till it is time for the next birth. But in case the soul is still deeply attached to things related to that life, environment, relations, deep and especially negative emotions, or even its physical body (if it is buried, and not given in the fire then water properly);  then it becomes difficult for it to progress into its new existence. It cannot ‘sleep’. The first step into the pitrulok, is a period of rest. The soul is extremely tired with the efforts of the life it has lived, and recovers as it ‘sleeps’. During this ‘sleep’, its attractions to its previous life are dissolved as far as possible. After some time it wakes up, gets used to its astral existence, takes stock of its karmic balance and chooses its new place of birth.ghostBut if it is still deeply attached to its previous life’s stuff, highly materialistic, emotionally attached, has deep cravings, addictions, etc, it refuses to enter the pitrulok and remains attached to some physical object in the Martyalok/physical world, a house, a tree, a person anything. It then becomes a ghost/pretatma. This is very inauspicious phase (paap yoni) and a step backwards as the soul tries to return to the environment of its previous life rather than moving onwards. Thus is gets stuck. It is already very tired after its ‘living’ phase, so its higher self tries to get it to move forward into the Pitrulok, but its misplaced desires is a barrier. It is quite confused, oppressed, frustrated, angry and sad.

These ghost souls are very rare but they are. An example, saw this on one of my clients. e.g. assume that someone was addicted to gambling and frequents a specific place where gamblers meet. After the soul left the body, it cannot not shake off its desire to gamble thus gets attached to this gambling place. Now it cannot participate in the gambling, so it watches the other living people and gets even more frustrated. So it then temporarily possess the bodies of the living and gets its thrills. The living person is not aware of this temporary possession, but he does realise that whenever he enters the gambling place now, he suddenly feels more excited and his desire to gamble is heightened, etc this is the effect of the ghost’s temporary possession. So places of low level desires, e.g. gambling, bars, red-light areas etc, have these ghosts mingling among the living.

When someone is possessed, however temporarily, the ghost uses his pran/vital energy. Thus you will see that such people lose weight, fall sick, become listless physically, emotionally unresponsive, skin becomes cold/clammy etc. The person’s electrical body goes into a shock and the burden of the parasite/ghost drains it. This drain is dangerous. I have written about haunted houses earlier, where my body’s interaction with a house at the electromagnetic levels told me that something was wrong. All our interactions are electromagnetic in nature.

This above phenomenon is thankfully quite rare. But living people often say they are being ‘haunted’ or ‘possessed’. There are a few other reasons for this. Most commonly, someone who is afraid, with a weak mind or with a hyper-active imagination, can imagine a ghost in every shadow. This imagination can get quite vivid and he is quite convinced. This is a sort of a self-hypnosis where the person for whatever reason projects ‘ghosts’ around him! The power of thought. To ‘cure’ this faulty thought process, there will have to be a equally vivid counter-idea put to him. Generally educated/rational people do not suffer like this, but this is quite common in backward areas. Now what to do if you think someone is ‘possessed’ or thinks he is possessed. If the person has created an auto-suggestion of being possessed, asking him what he wants, is a useful counter-suggestion. Most of the times it is as simple as alcohol or a cigarette or some food item. It is given with the strong instruction that he stops being possessed. And the person stops the self-hypnosis of his ‘possession’. Ensure that he gets a good diet, head/body massage with ayurvedic oils, plenty of sunlight and if possible a small vacation to refresh his mind. (Cleaning out the house and environment of negative energies also helps immensely.)

As always, small children must be protected from interactions with negative energies, thus they are not taken to places of where there is trauma, or morally wrong things happening, or graveyards/cemeteries, never take them at twilight or in the dark under trees or near water or near ruins etc. Children can see too much and also have limited strength of mind and body thus can be affected quite easily by ghosts draining their pran.ghostIf the person has actually been possessed, (most likely temporarily possessed) by low level ghosts. he too will ask for something small related to the senses which can be given to him with the strict instructions that it will leave now. Generally these are souls of people who had a death-bed wish of eating something, travelling somewhere or meeting someone. Not actively malignant, just dejected and frustrated.

Then there are the benevolent ghosts, aged people from the family who are stuck because of their tremendous love for someone in the family. In such cases they may help by providing guidance in danger etc. It would be ideal if you can show them the way onward and push them on it, by performing a Tarpan/energy ritual for the deceased. Then there are the malevolent ghosts, people who died young, young mothers/expecting women, people addicted to bad habits etc. These have very strong and selfish desires and may want to drag their favourite person/person with similar tastes down with them to the pret yoni/ghost phase. Possession by these can be actually dangerous. Best engage a shaman/tantrik to deal with them.

Writing a bit on how tantriks work. The easiest is to catch a ghost soul, turn it into a slave which will do whatever is being asked. These are always unwilling and always ready to turn against their captor. Most tantriks, as their powers of control fail, come to a bad end as their slaves turn against them.

The second type of tantrik uses his own powers to create a ‘shadow’/chhaya from his own energy which goes away from him and does his work. This is like a robot, no separate consciousness of its own, but if the tantrik dies before he can dissolve his shadow, this shadow can continue existing especially in uninhabited places and seem to be ghost. This ‘ghost’ is something like a bio-particle. In my earlier post on haunted houses, I have written on the bio-particles of deceased persons adhering to stuff in empty houses, which when occupied by living persons again, become reanimated and appear as hauntings. It is easy to remove such residual bio-electricity. In these cases, a ghost soul is not involved.

The rarest things are when the person is possessed by a higher level entity (pishachya, vetal etc). This almost never happens, but then a tantrik/shaman will be needed if you ever come across this.

So the gist is, if you ever feel that you are being haunted or your client is being possessed, 90% of the time it will not be because of a real ghost soul. Of the remaining 10%, also 9% will be the low level spirits whom you can easily deal with either by giving it the small thing it desires and/or family doing the tarpan ritual. Strength physical, mental and emotional is essential if you are to resist these forces and help them move out into the Pitrulok where they now belong.

The moment of Death..

I have written a lot about life, there was a question about death. I take this to mean the physical death, where we leave this physical body and move out. Death can be of two types now, one is where we move out into the spirit dimension/Pitrulok and the second type is where the soul realises itself to be the Ultimate and achieves Moksh. Here writing about the first sort of death which we all will generally experience.

The body is electromagnetic, there are chakras/energy vertices and nadi/channels carrying pran/vital energy. As long as pran moves inside this system the body remains animated and alive. Once the time allotted is over, the pran along with the Jivatma/individual soul with its karmic baggage, blasts through any one of these nadis and exits. Thus the body dies. You do not die, you are the Jivatma/ individual soul. A quick go through on what happens when the body dies.deathFor a brief period before the body dies, there is restlessness and agony. This duration varies. The first reason will be the diseases etc due to which you have decided to leave the ailing body, this can go on for days or even months depending on the disease you chose for yourself at the moment of your birth. Then the main reason for this agony is, you are withdrawing pran from the nadi structure of the body. You are systematically destroying the body, and its pain does not really affect you now. You want the pran boost which will propel you faster and higher so you withdraw pran to your third eye/Kuthastha point and the body organs fail. The residual bio-energy of those organs can cause temporary spasms or pain. The pran will be now allocated only to that nadi from where you have decided to exit. This happens in a matter of seconds.

This is followed by a period of ‘senselessness’. During this brief period, the soul i.e. you leave the inert body. This is a very very brief period where you take with you everything from your current life. Everything you have done, felt, experienced, touched, mentally, physically, emotionally, in every way, all the experiences of this life, you take them, this is the karmic baggage. These are the impressions/Sanskar on your Jivatma.

You reside in this five layered body called Panchakosh/ five-enclosures, the lowest energy is Anna-mai-kosh, Pran-mai-kosh, Mano-mai-kosh, Vidnyan-mai-kosh and Anand-mai-kosh the highest energy layer. You leave behind the Anna-mai-kosh, the visible body, and take the other 4 layers, your karmic baggage, along.

When you take on the body, i.e while you are moving within the astral body of your mother and your body is being made within her womb, you are aware of the sum total of your karma. Your higher self is aware and you plan for what all you will do when you are born to reduce your karmic baggage (the 4 higher energy layers). But the moment of birth is the moment of binding. Your higher self goes into a shock briefly at the moment you are born, and in this moment the bindings/sanskar of the birth moment tie it. Now the lowest energy layer is bound to your soul and it dominates the other four. You reduce this domination when you perform your regular spiritual practice.

Now back to the moment of exit. If the soul has not managed to complete what it had planned, then at the moment of death it regrets, regrets terribly. And in the pain of this regret, it exits through a lower energy exit near the lower parts of the body. In case it has managed to complete something good on the spiritual path then it can move out through the upper part of the body. When soul has completely achieved its agenda of karmic rebalance it can move out through the sushumna-bramarandhra thus achieve Moksh.

If you are able to see auras, you will notice that a before a person is to die, 6 months in advance the aura goes ‘thinner’, more ‘wispy’, even if the death is going to be by an accident. If the person who is to die, is spiritually oriented he will gradually withdraw himself emotionally from his loved ones during this period. A few days before death the aura goes white and a few hours before it will turn translucent. If you pay attention you will see the Jivatma/individual soul come out of the body looking like a whitish orb. This orb remains spherical for sometime, presumably the soul is in shock at entering the astral like this. But within an hour you will see the orb now looks like the dead person. The soul has come out of its ‘coma’ and takes on the impression of the body it inhabited. This soul is weightless and whizzes around the house. It tries to talk to its family. If you can see it, best not let on that you can see, else it will continuously and pointlessly keep on chattering to you. Even if you ignore it later, it will keep talking in the background. It remains disoriented and trying to adjust to its new body but after sometime it actually enjoys itself. The new astral body is weightless, ageless and painless. It retains the image of its discarded body for some time but soon it balloons up and distorts and the image fades. Then it looks like a spherical ball about 4-5ft across, flying about the place. After all the cremation rites (anteyshti/cremation and dissolving the asti/ashes in flowing water) are done and over with, this soul leaves the house. It is important that the body be offered to fire as it completely cuts off the attachment of the soul to its discarded shell. death(If you want to catch a spirit, the best place would be a burial cemetery where bodies are buried. Not that I want you to try this, they are quite frustrated and angry. But it is a fact that as long as the physical body exists, the soul remains attracted to it.)

Then we call the soul at the 13th day ritual for powering it with mantra and energy offerings/Tarpan. These are essential as the soul will now rest and recoup itself. It has laboured hard for so many years (lived in the body), and cannot rest immediately, so at the 13th day it is given the energy, so that it can relax and sleep. People who die a natural death, aged persons, spiritually inclined persons accept their new body more easily. But people who have died young, in accidents, suicide and the worst, a pregnant woman who has died, have unfulfilled desires and suffer for longer periods before they can ‘sleep’.

Generally a soul ‘sleeps’, recovers then takes stock of its karma and actions. Then it starts preparing for its next life and searches for an appropriate situation where it can take a new birth. This can take a few years depending on the soul. Time is relative. When the soul is in Pitrulok/astral dimension it can and does communicate with its ‘soul group’, the souls who are travelling together and interchangeably interact as as mother, father, husband, wife, child, friends etc. But for the highly spiritual souls this interaction will be minimal, as they are more aware and their soul group with whom they have karmic relationships is very small. These higher spiritual souls can also work, they work as deities, demi-gods etc in other dimensions.

When your loved ones leave the body it is advisable to stop mourning and even thinking about them. The Jivatma is not your dear mother who left, your ‘mother’ stopped existing the instant the soul left the body. The soul is much much more that the limited mother you knew. It now remembers everything about itself, its karma from the instant of its creation. It is not your ‘mother’. So stop thinking about her, you will obviously offer the yearly mantra/energy offerings as per the tarpan/rituals, but that is it. Best would be to avoid keeping photographs or other things which affect you emotionally, donate the stuff to the needy if you can afford to. Stop thinking about those who have left. Emotions will disturb them and give them a route to access you, and you really do not want this to happen. (I have had so many examples of departed ones creating problems, that it is best to keep away.) However much you may grieve, try to understand that if your mother left behind her body (the most beloved possession), then she has left everything. Do not call her again now. That part of your life is over, there are so many new things calling out to you now, look forward at them and move on.

The darker side of the 3rd house..

The 3rd house is a rather typical house, it can become rather malefic with severe repercussions on the entire personality if it chooses to. It is a Upachaya house and is often a shadowy house.

The 3rd house in some Jyotish texts is considered as a house of turmoil/dushamsthan along with the 6th, 8th and 12th houses. It can definitely cause turmoil in the chart! I have observed that in the current age that we live in, this 3rd house can be quite useful (unless it is heavily damaged by malefics). We live in the age of Mercury, dominated by communication on a global scale, it is a superficial world, where we often act, need to act, fast and decisively. If this house is moderately influenced by malefics it can actually be an asset, as it gives a rough sort of courage and boldness, which is perhaps required today.

The third house is naturally ruled by Mercury with Gemini being the third sign of the zodiac. And where Mercury is, you can expect typical problems, mental thought patterns, ability to concentrate, willingness to act, stability of the mind, the way you think, desire to learn/study. The chest and the respiratory system. And because it rules the hands it is the first step to action! Hands are the most important tools you have, you touch, manipulate, use, push, pull, love with your hands. Your hands are how you act. Mercury, the impressionable adolescent of astrology here chooses to think and act.darknessThe basic birth chart will give the manifested reality and the 9th divisional chart/Navamsha gives the potential, evaluate both to get a true picture. You can build the picture using the keywords of the planet and the house together.

First the worst case scenario, most often seen in criminals. Now if this house is influenced by malefics alone, it can cause immeasurable harm. The Sun, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or Mars if let loose here, without any support from the benefics Jupiter or Venus can wreck Mercury. Such a person can suffer physical damage often from miscalculation of risks while in action, e.g. while driving, in short journeys, while playing games, etc. Damage, delay, frustration in education, obstacles in work, emotional damage often projected as cruel and unstable behaviour. Physical deformity like arms amputated from birth. If the influencing malefics are of a similar nature then there is a tendency for self harm or early death either by suicide, accident or even as a punishment! If the influencing malefics are of dissimilar natures then the personality can be violent, crooked, criminal and heartless.

If the Moon gets caught here, under the influence of malefics, then it can result in mental problems, depression, and psychiatric problems.

One of the worst placements in the chart would be a Ketu in the 3rd. This single planet here can cause havoc, especially if he is aspected by malefics and not by benefics. Even in transit such a lone Ketu can cause severe problems here. Mental restlessness, frustration, exiles, detentions, imprisonment, diseases of the chest and lungs etc. A Ketu in the 3rd would mean a Rahu in the 9th, which will impact the ‘foundations’ of your life. The help from the ancestors, peers and patrons will not be forthcoming. Also the deep philosophy that one lives his life by will be tainted by Rahu’s typical over-reaching, fake, acquisitive, greedy behaviour.

Saturn here will create a hesitant, overly cautious, cowardly personality who is scared to take initiatives in his life. He will also impact the intelligence, creativity and connection to the divine (aspect on 5th house), constrain the 9th house and give a negative impact on the entire personality and his environment by his aspect on the 1st house. Saturn+Ketu gives a violent criminal personality.

A Mars alone in the 3rd will create outbursts of uncontrolled force, death in accidents, injuries by sharp weapons, bloodshed, crimes of passion and temper, action without regard to consequences. A Mars aspected by benefics can create revolutionaries, brave, fiery, analytical military leader with a great sense of strategy and personal integrity. But Mars with other malefics can cause problems. Mars+Rahu will give brain/mental related problems at some point of life. A Mars+Rahu or Mars+Saturn can typically deny marriage or cause infertility. Especially if such a Mars is in a fiery sign then his effects will be more intense.

A Sun in the 3rd if poised to give bad results can give criminals who are ultimately executed by the government. Sun is also creativity, so such persons may be genius, artists, scientists, etc whose lives often take a tragic fatal turn. e.g. Ketu+Sun typically can give death by hanging, in fire or by poisons.

However you will rarely see such heavily afflicted charts in your regular life, these are the anti-social elements, oddly eccentric individuals whose career is generally cut short by death or isolation. A heavily afflicted 3rd house does not allow the native to roam at large for long. (A rather morbid study would be to analyse the charts of people who either committed suicide or were executed.)

If malefics are placed singly with/aspected by benefics in the 3rd house they can give good results. There would of course be conflicts in life, some delays and hindrances. This house belongs to the impressionable Mercury so he allows all the resident planets their expression initially in a juvenile manner. Thus its results improve with age as the planets and the houses mature. The best part is that here a good influence from Venus/Jupiter can counter-balance the malefic influences if any.

However in my opinion, the best option for the 3rd house is, it remains vacant and/or aspected by benefics.

darkness(There was a question on the 3rd house being a dushamsthan and a upachhaya house etc, hope this post was of some help)

Malefic energies in your chart

In a horoscope analysis, the most important planetary force is the Ascendant Lord, followed by the Moon. If your these 2 forces are well placed and are capable of giving good results the basics of your life are secured. Now here is a checklist of the Arishta/malefic influences in your chart. You will need to see this list in the context of your horoscope. Every planet has the capacity to give malefic results depending on several factors.arishtaFirst to begin with, the planets,

  1. The natural malefics are Mars, Sun, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. (Jupiter, Venus, well placed Moon and well placed Mercury are benefics)
  2. Moon if weak, debilitated, under the influence of malefics or placed very near the Sun will act as a malefic.
  3. Mercury if weak, debilitated or under influence of the malefic planets will act as a malefic.
  4. Benefics Jupiter, Venus, Moon and Mercury can become ineffective if they are retrograde. If retrograde and under the influence of malefics they can even give malefic results.
  5. The essential malefic/benefic nature of these planets will be modified depending on the houses that they own in the chart, so will vary as per the ascendant sign. So take note of this modification in their natures too!

The houses and their owners,

  1. The dushamshthanas, 6th, 8th and 12th are sources of malefic influences. Even a benefic placed here will give malefic results. Worse will be if you have the Moon or Ascendant owner placed here.
  2. The placement of the owners of the dushamsthanas should be analysed. These ‘house owners’ may be benefic/malefic by their essential nature, but for this chart they are karaks/agents of turmoil so you need to pay attention to which house they are placed in.

The agents of death, the Marak and Marakesh,

  1. The 2nd house and the 7th house are called the Marak sthan, these houses are linked to timing of physical death. Presence of malefics in these houses at birth needs to be checked. Especially should remain alert during transits of malefics through these houses.
  2. The house owners of these 2nd and 7th houses are called the Marakesh, they decide the timing of death. Especially be careful during Mahadasha and sub-periods of these planets and their transits. Even simple illness during this period can act as the ‘seed’ for physical death.

Additionally the chart draws strength from these positions,

  1. The houses 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th are called the foundations of the horoscope/Kendra. If benefics are placed here they provide strength and vitality which can tide over malefic influences.
  2. The 3rd house is the ‘house of house’ for the 8th house. It is the ‘death’ of ‘death’. So even if you have malefic planets placed here they add to your strength. This house represents your confidence and inner boldness so any planet performs well here.
  3. The 11th house is the Bhavat-bhavam for the 6th house, it is the ‘enemy’ of the ‘enemy’. Any planet, benefic/malefic, performs well here. It represents your gains and adds to your strength.

Now the timing. – Now that you know which planets are the malefic energies of your chart, you will need to pay special attention to their dasha periods and transits. If you get a chart with questions you will need to do this part of the analysis.

  1. First check what sort of a problem it is. Which houses are linked to it, there are a few limited categories of problems. You can easily check which house and which planet related issues these are.
    • For medical emergencies
    • For marriage problems
    • For business, profession and finance related problems
    • Land and property
    • Issues with children
    • Education related questions
  2. Now see which Mahadasha and sub-periods are on. If they are of some malefic planets take notes.
  3. Then the current transits and how these planets in transit are interacting with the birth planetary positions related to the question that is being asked.
    • e.g. for medical emergency, you see that the it is the 7th house Lord/Marakesh Mahadasha with Ketu antardasha which can cause illnesses and even physical death. If in this, you see Saturn transiting the Ascendant sign. And in this, if Mars transits the 8th and Moon comes in the 8th for its 2.25days transit. Accident will happen. If Jupiter is transiting the 12th it can lead to death even. But if Jupiter is in the kendra house it can save the life.

Analysing malefic influences is a distasteful but essential part of any horoscope analysis you do. After all no one comes to you for asking ‘why am I doing good’! You will always get clients with problems, so with time this analysis becomes automatic.

Marak, rulers of the 2nd and 7th

Marak/Marakesh is an important concept in Jyotish. Marak is the planet/s which decides the timing of exit from the physical body, death. The situation of death is defined by the 8th house and the conditions active at the moment of death are seen from the power of the Moksh trikon, but timing is from the Marak. The planetary lord of the 2nd house and the 7th house of the ascendant is the Marak planet for the chart.

The 8th house and the bhavat bhavam of the 8th i.e. the 3rd house are called the Ayush sthana, houses of longevity. The twelfth house counted from these two houses are thus the 7th and the 2nd houses, these are the Marak/death determining houses.

Then there are natural marak planets i.e. Saturn, Mars and Rahu. These three can on their own cause physical death without much assistance from other planets but its quite rare. They need to be connected in some way to the 2nd or 7th houses or their lords. Physical death is an extremely significant phenomenon, it is not determined by a single placement but by a synergy of the entire chart’s energies as a whole. The Mahadasha or antardasha ruled by the Marak, or a particularly important transit of the Marak planets can serve as the final break point.optix2.jpgSo why the rulers of 2nd and 7th houses? These are auspicious houses, so why should they be used to judge the time of death. Death is not considered auspicious, or is it?

House 2 – You all know quite of astrological stuff by now, so what all does the 2nd house stand for? Think a bit and read on.

  • 2nd house is the storehouse. You, in your life gain experiences of several sorts. Also you accumulate several types of stuff. These are your assets, the treasures of your personality and your environment (defined by the 1st house). These are ‘collected’ in the 2nd house. You finish collecting all that you have decided on, your treasuries are full. Now what? You leave! The body cannot take in anything anymore, you have completed your targets. Saturation.
  • Now the natural ruler of the 2nd is Venus. He is also rules relationships at every level.  Relationship with the act of death naturally ruled by Mars of Scorpio 8th. The 2nd house here is one-half of the yoke, the other being the 8th house (it is counted seventh from 2nd). When you finish accumulating your assets in the 2nd house, the 8th house will trigger the fast terrifying transformations of your assets, take these stores and use them in a balanced manner, converting your physical identity to that of the astral. Emptying them and making them ready for the next rebirth.

House 7 – After reading this about the 2nd house, I am sure you can work out why 7th house ruler can also indicate the time to exit the physical body.

  • The 7th house rules bargains, partnerships, balance and equatable sharing. Throughout your life you are actively involved in several kinds of partnerships. Every relationship can be viewed through the lens of a ‘partnership’, where both partners gain fairly. So what happens when you reach your goals on partnerships and gains from them?
  • We take birth to re-balance karma, no other reason. Balance is the reason for this life in this body. We decide on how much of this karma-balance-target at the moment of birth. This moment of birth is the 1st house, and the 7th is the other part of the yoke.
  • Once you achieve the goals, it is time to set new targets, i.e. leave the old physical body and take on a new one.
  • The stuff you have in the 2nd house also represents the secret gains from the 7th house (it is the eighth when counted from the 7th). It represents how you have used the energy of the 7th to change the status of your karmic-balance.
  • The natural ruler here is also Venus, as he rules the 7th house of the zodiac, Libra.
  • Venus is the mokshkarak, when yoked to the vitality of Mars he can even grant you Moksh if the time is right. When all your karma is balanced by the assets you have gained in your this incarnation. This is one of the reasons Moksh is considered to be the primary function of Venus and not any other planet.

wallup.netIf in the horoscope the Moon sign is more powerful than the Ascendant then check out the 2nd and 7th house lords counted from this Moon sign, they can also act as Maraks.

Then there are those periods in life where life becomes unbearable. There are catastrophic changes and traumas which makes one want to end it all. But these are not periods where death will occur. These hard times are related to the following planets, their Mahadasha /antardasha or significant transits. The power of the planet to give positive or negative results should always be examined before arriving at a conclusion. And then as always look for patterns not single placements.

  • Lord of the 12th house from the Moon or Ascendant or Saturn – Loss of emotional support and comfort, extreme loneliness and grief. Separation from love and loved ones. A deep desire to move into the astral dimensions permanently.  This causes a desire to leave the physical body frame. The spirit wants to dissolve and separate.
  • Lord of the 8th house from the Moon or Ascendant or Saturn – Again this planet cannot confer physical death but traumatic catastrophic changes which are quite death-like. Transformations of personality in every way, positive and negative. Sudden wealth, legacies, accidents, surgery, magic, tantric stuff, divorce etc, but never actual physical death.

The length of a life is not important the intensity is. Mars rules intensity and Saturn rules endurance. Mars is always willing to change, transform and he has the capacity to generate enough resources to facilitate his fast and furious movements. Saturn is slow, he moves slowly generating his resources and the processes which he rules over linger on. Mars, the ruler of life and death is also the natural partner of Venus, the ‘natural’ ruler of 2nd and 7th, sort of the ‘natural’ marakesh. And Venus is Saturn’s best friend too.

If the chart shows the influence of Mars over this process of physical death, it will be very fast. If Saturn has links to physical death then it will be slow and often via a lingering illness. If you have Mars and Saturn both involved with your 8th house then be prepared for the long haul, a long life has been granted to you. If benefics aspect they will give a graceful and dignified transition.

Sometimes you get a case where the person is enduring a prolonged illness. You look at the chart and see that though the Maraks periods are on, the life span allotted to the chart is not yet complete. Such a typical time frame gives ‘sickness’, this sickness may manifest as extreme sadness (astral body suffers) or actual sickness (physical body suffers). The prana-link between the jivatma/soul and the body/robot is thinned down. The soul has not yet decided to leave. In such a case, prayers and healing (on spiritual, physical, emotional and mental levels) can convince the soul to stay on and continue.

Back to Venus, the morning star! Venus always fascinates me. He is beautiful, balanced, he knows the value of stuff, he grants the deepest knowledge, he decides the time when your body has exhausted itself. He tells you it is time to get a new life! He tests you, he does not grant his wisdom so easily. He defines relationships, the most important one being your relationship with your own self. He is perfection!

(A philosopher might say that the family/2nd house and the spouse/7th house are the things one most loves and these are the ones which destroy him in the end!)
