Vimshottari dasha of the rulers of the houses 7-12

Vimshottari dasha system is the most popular system used for timing events in your life. I had got a comment in the contact form that it is very difficult, but it is not. You break down the components into small keywords and them mix and match. This is a continued post from here rulers of the houses 1st to 6th.

At the simplest analysis, periods of a planet activate the houses he owns in the chart, this is the major influence on your life. If the house is strong you should expect powerful results. The other planets if placed in this house are also activated and give results.  Planets placed in the house will modulate the results (give about 15% weightage per planet). Several planets placed in a house will make it a focus point of your life as a lot of events of your life will be linked around this house. e.g if you have a SunMercury placed in the 4th house in Aquarius, then in the period of Saturn, your 4th house will be active and you or your mother may get into a government job, she may learn or teach you new skills, hard work will be required but you/she will have the self-ego, confidence to pull through and benefit etc.

Vimshottari dasha of the rulers of the houses 7-12

Periods of the lord of the 7th house give power to your relations and your ability to relate to others. You will be more in on-one partnerships which may be business, marriage, finances, material, emotional or even spiritual. The focus will be on partnerships linked to the social or legal structure. Marriage, business partnerships, gains, contracts, legal instruments, financial gains will all be possible. During this period you will be successful at bargains, agreements, diplomatic mediation etc, you will balance things and achieve harmony. “Feel good” all around. You might be involved in the concerns of your spouse, understand him/her better and generally have a good time, children may be born.  The 7th lord is a marak, the planet who times physical death. So if you have reached the limit of your allotted longevity, physical death can occur in this period. If you are spiritually inclined then you will make progress in your search for Yourself.

Now you might be wondering, the Sun and Moon own a single sign each, all other planets own two signs each. The planet will activate both his houses where ever his signs are placed. Both will be in the focus.

This effect is seen most vividly in Aries and Libra ascendants where the Ascendant lord, Mars/ Venus rules the 1st and 8th houses. In Taurus and Scorpio Ascendants, Venus/ Mars rule the 1st and 6th houses. And to some extent with the Aquarius ascendant where Saturn rules the 1st and 12th houses. Here the ascendant lord himself rules the main rising house and a house of turmoil/ dushamsthan.

Time periods of the ruler of the 8th house will give your forceful sudden changes. Depending on the chart this change can be on medical, financial, social (especially spouse’s family), emotional, occult, etc levels. Death generally does not occur in this period. This house changes not just on the physical level, it is very deeply within your inner spiritual levels too. If you can recognise this, you can navigate successfully. Depending on the nature of the planet involved you can anticipate, e.g. Mars is decisive action, in a sharp cut, you may undergo a long-pending surgery which will improve your health. If Venus is involved here, you will find the change forcing agents to be linked to relationships or money, e.g some secrets linked to these may come up and you will act to restore balance. Accept the change, you cannot hold back to the old when the 8th house in involved, if you do it will give you pain.  Especially Aries and Libra ascendants be ready to change, and more so for Libra ascendant as Venus Mahadasha is the longest at 20yrs! A continued period creation, destruction and recreation of the personality/environment.

The gift of the 8th house is that it gives you a fresh new outlook and a new set of expectations in life.

If you are seeing possibly negative results, you should analyse the Saturn transits (2.5yrs per sign) and Rahu/Ketu transits (1.5yrs per sign) and Jupiter transits (1 yr per sign). These can either intensify the result or grant some relief depending on where they are located in transit. Saturn acts as a brake, you are required to endure. Rahu will pull you wildly into the experiences of that house, Ketu will make you indifferent to them and Jupiter will expand whatever it signifies. Now use these keywords logically. e.g. The changes triggered by the 8th house will be just as deep but their quality will be modified, with Saturn they can take longer to complete and you will be required to endure patiently.

Vimshottari dasha of the rulers of the houses 7-12

Periods of the ruler of the 9th house are the high points in life and should be utilised intelligently. Marriage, birth of children, growth, maturity, development of the personality, new directions in profession, you might take up a teaching type of job, help from seniors, travel opportunities, pilgrimages, blessings from the ancestral spirits and advantages in the society are all possible. A deeper understanding of all aspects of life is gift from the 9th house. You become more ‘heavy’, the understanding of your life experiences now reflects in your aura. Realisation, philosophy, acceptance are the keywords here.

The physical age in which the house is activated should be considered. e.g. in the period of the ruler of the 5th house of a 60yr old woman, you cannot predict birth of her children! Always keep the age, home-culture and social context in mind while predicting results.

The period of the 10th house is always linked to the social and professional life. If this period occurs after you start your independent life, i.e. After your 20’s, it can be more fruitfully utilised. If this happens in early life, your birth father will benefit in terms of professional success and social mobility thus you as a child will be benefitted through him. New job opportunities, increase in salaried income, new responsibilities, social recognition etc, but first and foremost duty is demanded. You will be required to perform your visible public duties. But remember this house is the karmic mirror of the 4th so you may neglect your home in favour of your work-place, so try to balance both aspects of your life. You will gain social respect, but wealth will increase with your salary. Speculation and financial asset creation will not be really possible here. The only exception is the Aries ascendant where the same planet Saturn rules the 10th and 11th house, thus gives both lucky money and social respect.

The Birth Moon chart provides valuable insights always. To know if you are going to enjoy this period of professional success on the emotional levels too, check out the house located 10th from the birth moon. If there are positive influences here you have the best of both worlds, you will enjoy a materially and emotionally satisfying career.

The period of the 11th house ruler is very favourable. This house is all about ’Acceptance’, you are accepted in every sort of environment and you are permitted to operate here. You are not barred from any activity, and risk-taking is also permitted. There are no restrictions! So depending on the power of the house in your chart, this period can give very high gains. Friendship, large social groups, like-minded community, interlinked networks will all be active and expand. You will meet new people. You might receive prizes, public recognition in-addition to financial gains. Whatever you have laid down in your life as of now you will reap its results. You might gain from your father’s family. You will be lucky, so speculation and financial asset creation is possible. Anything that can be inter-linked will be available and anything that can give gains will benefit. You have the widest scope possible here to further your material and social goals. Children getting married is one possible result, giving advantages in every way.

Vimshottari dasha of the rulers of the houses 7-12

Period of the 12th house lord is a time of retreat. One way or the other you will be put in seclusion. The vitality and activity of the physical body is reduced in some way. You will be distanced from material concerns. Travel, either to foreign lands or to the meditative sub-conscious states is possible. Depending on how this house is placed, you can be required to live in a research lab, forestland, prison, hospital. Activities of the bedroom or the mediation room, take your pick. You might sleep more, travel astrally more, develop ESP and clairsentience, receive guidance of the ancestor spirits etc. If this period occurs after mid-life it is more manageable, but if it comes when you are supposed to be active in life it can cause problems. If this occurs in the teen age, you might suddenly withdraw from your social life, might lose interest in keeping the physical body attractive, self image might shatter, just as you are entering social life, this can be especially traumatic. These are ‘dissolving’ energies, so the teenager will not be interested in learning art/ craft/ life-skills/ athletics etc normal teenage activity. As the Mahadasha ends, you will regain your interest in your physical body/environment.

One special case here, if Mercury is the ruler of the 12th and his period occurs in childhood/early life he will continue for his 17yr period and this will be followed in sequence by Ketu Mahadasha for 7 years. Ketu is naturally separative so this will be a seamless 24yrs of separative energies.

The Vimshottari mahadasha which you begin with at birth is important as it leaves its mark on the nurture you receive as a baby/child. If by chance you start off with the period of the ruler of a Dushamsthan it causes a lifetime of repressed trauma. e.g. A baby born beginning with the 6th rulers period, will suffer illnesses at birth, neglect, lack of nutrition/parental love and nurture. A baby in the 8th house ruler’s period might require medical interventions which will impact his entire life. A baby beginning with the 12th lord’s period will suffer isolation and maybe invalid. Such babies/young children need proper medical and emotional care.

Astrology is about recognising patterns and then predicting. So here was a framework post, which you can use as a starting point to analyse your own chart.

Vimshottari dasha of the rulers of the houses 7-12

Venus and Mars placed in the 8th house

Venus placed in the 8th house.

This is a reasonably favourable placement but a bit typical. Venus and Mars get along quite well and he is comfortable in this house. But do check out which sign he is occupying and he is placed here as the ruler of which houses of the chart (i.e.where are Taurus and Libra placed?). This helps in in-depth analysis. Also the strength of the ascendant sign/lord, 8th house lord and Mars.

Venus here is the agent of hoards, relationships and balance in the house of sudden catastrophic identity changes. You can make the most of this combination by consciously initiating changes rather than having them suddenly forced on you.

You will be quite intelligent and well-known in society, but very few people will know the real you. You like discovering secrets, you enjoy this deeply, you are skilled at extracting information. And then you prefer hiding your real self. You will always have secrets and also know how to use them.

You do not follow established religion. You do your own esoteric /spiritual /occult practices and are quite good at these. If you are a woman these tendencies will be more powerful. All professions indicated by the 8th house are possible in this Venus placement, a doctor involved in childbirth or cosmetic surgery, confidential financial work, emergencies, disaster relief, mining and exploration, healers, occultists etc are all possible.

There will always be some irregularities in love affairs and marriage. Relationships may begin and end shockingly? Multiple marriages and secretive relationships are possible. The actual wedding event may be low-profile. The spouse may have occult tendencies or financial abilities which he/she keeps secret. Or the spouse may deliberately keep a socially low profile. If Venus is unable to give good results, the spouse, especially the wife, might suffer with medical problems or have a relatively short life. The spouse and in-laws will be generally charming, fair people. You will be on good terms with them. Spouse’s speech, voice, face and behaviour will be fair and balanced. However all your relationships will have something concealed which can cause problems. You always keep a part of yourself secret in all relationships, and simultaneously your partners will also keep their secrets. Venus in 8th is secretive but not dishonest (unless malefic influences). There will be issues because of this so always try to understand the other before taking a final decision.

Marriage and partnerships will generally give gains. You might marry for money! Legacies and inheritances can come in. However it would be good if you keep a monthly account of earning/spendings to ensure that your financial situation remains comfortable. You keep your financial dealings, money and properties secret. If Venus is afflicted you might engage in shady deals and financial crimes.

Medical problems can be of the blood, kidney, reproductive organs, diabetes, connected to liquids in the body. Death can occur in a highly spiritual place or in a place of pilgrimage. It is generally a long life with an easy death. If the horoscope supports, this Venus can grant Moksh or at least significant spiritual growth.

Venus and Mars placed in the 8th house

Mars placed in the 8th house.

Mars is the natural ruler of the 8th sign of the zodiac, Scorpio and always exerts his subtle influence on the matters of the 8th in every chart. The agent of life and death, placed in the house of death is not easy and requires careful analysis. A lot will depend on which sign occupies the 8th and Mars as the ruler of which houses is placed here (where is Aries and Scorpio placed). It is a challenging placement but can give good results.

Energy will be high and you perform well in emergency situations. You thrive on high energies. You need the buzz! If you do not get it from your environment, you will then create such energies yourself. But if you are placed in a tense situation you absorb it into yourself and can actually act a calming agent! So go out, engage in physical activity, learn contact sports, drive, feel your blood pounding, channelise your energies in such activities so that you do not explode! This placement labels you as a Manglik‘, so finding a life partner (Indian arranged marriage) can be difficult.

The moral compass may be weak, e.g. might resort to bribery, cheating or manipulate finances to increase wealth. You can gain wealth in from others and from insurance and other such financial schemes. You might be perceived as being untrustworthy and your friends, relatives and brothers can suddenly behave in a untrustworthy manner themselves. Will know several secrets about several things which may be legal/illegal. May be required to take decisions or act on such matters. (However if a debilitated Mars occupies the 8th, he turns into a manipulator and causes problems for himself and others.)

Personal health will be fiery, temper will be high and risk taking behaviour will be the norm. The movement of pran in the body’s energy channels /naadi is highly fluctuating and of high intensity. The body is susceptible to ‘heat’ diseases and diseases of the reproductive organs and blood circulation. If a woman, should take special care during pregnancy and childbirth. Surgeries can happen several times in life. Children will be lesser in number. Longevity is generally on the shorter side, but for this the strength of Mars, 8th house lord, ascendent sign and its lord will have to be evaluated together. Death will be linked to liquids in some way e.g blood disease, kidney/urinary problems, drowning etc or in ‘sharp’ incidents, accidents. However has abilities for energy-healing.

Is passionate, can have affairs before marriage and secretly after marriage. Spouse’s behaviour, speech, wealth, voice and face and his/her family are indicated by the 8th. Wealth tends to increase after marriage and you believe in financial security. If this Mars is well placed then it can be ok, but if you get such a chart for marriage matching do double-check. A badly placed Mars here (aspected by or with more malefics or debilitated, worst would be a Rahu -Mars combination here) can indicate a bad situation for the spouse in every way including physical health/ longevity. A sense of joy/companionship with the spouse will be absent. You tend to dominate your spouse, in-laws and family members.

A Mars in 8th will aspect the 11th, 2nd and 3rd houses. So gains and finances will be good as long as you take personal initiative and interest in them. There might be friction with the family/brothers. This placement is a tough one but if you can channelise your energy appropriately it can be managed well.

Venus and Mars placed in the 8th house

This above was the bare-bones astrological part which you can use for analysing  your horoscopes. But astrology is really Jyotish, the science of Illumination. So here is an esoteric dimension which might interest.

Venus and Mars together are very fascinating forces. Mars is life, death and rebirth, the karmic cycle in which the individual soul moves till he attains Moksh. Mars represents your taking on the body and also your leaving it. The signs Aries and Scorpio are linked in the adversarial 6/8 axis from each other.

Venus is the limit of experience, the limit of Maya. Venus is the natural Marak, he decides when you have completed your karma of accumulating treasures and fulfilled your karma-linked relationships. His two signs, Taurus and Libra are also in the adversarial 6/8 axis from each other. As these two signs are the essence of Maya, the 2nd and 7th houses of your chart also represent Maya. Once you complete your experience of Maya, you attain Moksh, so Venus is the real Moksh-karak.

If you analyse these 4 signs/houses together you will get an inkling of the tremendous forces Mars and Venus represent together. Mars through his natural rulership of the 1st house creates your personality, you are literally born here. You then act/use the energy of the 1st to create the wealth of the 2nd house. If you have acted with a sense of self, the 2nd will be a fruit of your karma (karma-phal), and will be added to your stored karma, i.e. agami/new karma adds to the sanchita/stored karma. If your actions do not have the ‘I’ tag, then this house will represent rebalancing of karma (you do not create more karma and are actively rebalancing the stored hoard).

Now while you are busy creating/rebalancing karma, the energy of your body gets used up. So as the potential of the 2nd house gets realised, the vitality of the physical body diminishes. When you completely realise the potential of the 2nd, you simultaneously completely finish off the vitality of the manifested body thus the physical body dies. Depending on what type of actions you were doing, you will have created more karma or achieved Moksh.

Now in the same way, the 7th and 8th houses also work together. The natural ruler of the 7th is Venus and that of the 8th is Mars. The 7th represents karmic bindings, the other function of Maya. You are required to create and maintain relationships equitably and fairly here. You may call these marriage or business partnerships at the material level, but nevertheless they are bindings on the spiritual level. This 7th house can represent the relationship between you and your body. And the deepest bindings which you have laid on your own soul (the 7 bindings of vice, virtue, weakness, power, passion, dispassion and ignorance). Or finally your relationship with your own Higher Self.

The 8th house represents changes in identity which are caused by complete upheaval. The 8th uses the energy of the 7th to power itself. You get into relationships, experience them, saturate yourself and then transcend. The experience-energy is of the 7th, the House of Change uses this to change you at very fundamental levels. If you have observed yourself carefully through your life, your deepest changes in self-identity are always linked to relationships. Mars as the agent of death/rebirth, uses up Venus’s energy of fairness and balance. And when the potential of the 8th is complete, the deepest relationship of your soul with your present incarnated physical body/environment is also complete and you leave it. Now on the spiritual front if you have experienced each of the 7 bindings to the fullest you transcend them and achieve Moksh.

Venus and Mars placed in the 8th house

Jupiter, Saturn placed in the 8th house

The 8th house is called a Dushamsthan, a house of turmoil. Every sort of ‘Shock’, is the domain of the 8th house. This post is on how Jupiter and Saturn perform in this house of traumatic catastrophic changes.

Jupiter placed in the 8th house.

Jupiter placed in the 8th house is a good placement. His primary nature is to expand, so he will expand whatever is signified by your 8th house. Jupiter and Mars are quite friendly so Jupiter feels quite comfortable in this natural house of Mars.

The 8th is the house of all sorts of openings so you can expect life to open up for you at several levels. At the most material level, doors will open for you and the windows of opportunity will always available. But this route of growth will be in the shape of the transformative agents of the shocking 8th house. However Jupiter’s inherent benevolent nature allows you to accept this transformative trauma and its growth potential with hope and faith. Identity transformations will be many but gentler. There will be several changes in personality, ever growing, ever expanding.

You will face a lot of upheavals in life linked to the agents of the 8th, but every change will give you an enormously positive outcome which you had neither thought of nor anticipated at that time. There will be several unexpected situations in life. Possibilities of several surgeries remain, however they will all be successful. It would be good if you do routine body check ups after mid-life.

You will have knowledge of the occult and mysterious. Several deep secrets will be known to you, about yourself and about other people too. And you will use them, the secretive ‘king-maker’, your actions will be secret too. You will outwardly seem very ordinary but will wield your secretive influence on matters which will affect several. There will be something magnetic/large! about your personality, depending on which sign/body part is linked here. Large magnetic eyes perhaps?

Jupiter is an enormous graha and he uses the enormous potential of the 8th. He is basically a Teacher, and grants life experience using the energy of this 8th. His teachings go very deep into the astral self. You will practice spiritual activities which involve the movement of pran /kundalini. If the other placements support, this Jupiter can grant Moksh or at least significant spiritual growth.

You might have secret affairs before marriage or there will be some secret irregularities before you settle down with your spouse. The actual marriage event also will be in a relative secret setting. The spouse may be secretive, preferring to not be in the public eyes, or may have secret tantrik/ occult/ financial skills which are not known generally. The spouse and his/her family will be generous and helpful. Wealth will increase post-marriage. You can expect increases in hidden wealth. However the family finances will remain your secret as you do not share these details with your spouse. The marriage is reasonably happy with lesser number of children.

The results will vary as per the sign that is in the 8th. e.g. Jupiter if placed in his own signs, Sagittarius or Pisces or his sign of exaltation which is Cancer, will give even better results. Also do analyse that Jupiter is placed here as the lord of which houses. e.g. where are his signs (Sagittarius /Pisces) placed. These other 2 houses will also be affected by Jupiter occupying the 8th.

Transits of Jupiter are relatively long at about 1year per sign, in this period he goes retrograde for about 4 months. So there is a lot of scope for learning, re-learning and revising his lessons. Keep an eye on his transits.

Then as per the Vimhottari dasha system, Jupiter’s Major period, Mahadasha is quite long, 16 years. Also his sub-periods/Antar-dasha, in other planet’s Mahadashas is also quite lengthy. So keep this factor in mind while analysing his effect on you.

Overall this is a good placement.

Jupiter, Saturn placed in the 8th house

Saturn placed in the 8th house.

There is an understanding that this placement gives a long life, but always evaluate the quality of such a life before concluding that this is a good placement!

Shani is ‘fear’, so unless your Mars, 8th house lord, Ascendant lord and Moon are well placed you will be in perpetual fear of the agents of the 8th house. You resist transformations, change, rebirth, renewal, regeneration and refuse to re-define your self. You resist movement. The environment of the 8th demands transformative changes yet Shani resists them all. His nature is that he must resist. He remains fixed and he endures. Your personality faces changes, this is the function of the 8th house. 8th is continuous evolution. But as Saturn’s nature is to maintain the framework, you cannot evolve freely under his influence.

So look back at your life and try to analyse. Change is essential! But have you failed to change and thus lost valuable opportunities? After this self-introspection, list out the things about you which need change. And then commit yourself to change, slowly gradually over a period of time. As Saturn is commitment and regulation he will accept this form of regulated and well-evaluated change regime.

Then on the physical front, you will require medicines and visit the physical doctor often. You will be less receptive to the power of faith and the energy-healing methods. But in any case, there will be chronic diseases and healing will be slow, yet it will be a long life! Evaluate the 6th, 8th houses together for a in-depth on this health aspect.

The in-laws are seen from the 8th house and will be heavily influenced by Saturn. Here he occupies the 6/8 angle to the ascendant sign, thus the agents of the 8th will be adversarial to the personality. So the spouse and his/her family will be restrictive, maybe in constrained circumstances, anonymous working class type. You will be required to perform duties for them. Spouse’s face, speech, voice and behaviour will not be pleasing and often adversarial to your personal well-being. There will be a significant age difference. However she/he would be hardworking and suffer from chronic illnesses.

Relationship with the birth father is not good. Shani is the natural ruler of the 10th house so the birth father will not be of much help in this life, profession or his wealth will not be available to you. As 8th is 12th counted from the 9th house, the guidance from spiritual-father, established religion and ancestors will also be restricted.

From here Saturn aspects the 10th house, 2nd house and 5th house. So typically you would be a hard-working professional, perhaps with lesser salary than you deserve and your creative intelligence is highly structured. Wealth will not be in proportion to the work being demanded unless there are other influences supporting wealth-generation. No bursts of creativity, more like a steady disciplined output. You cannot ‘enjoy’ your creative genius. e.g. no time to play with children.

The results will vary as per the sign that is in the 8th. Also do analyse where are his signs (Capricorn/Aquarius) placed, in the chart, i.e. Saturn is in the 8th as the ruler of which houses of your chart? These other 2 houses will also be subtly influenced by the agents of the 8th house.

Exception is if Shani is in Libra (exalted), or in Capricorn or Aquarius (his own signs), thus he can better structure the energies of the 8th and help you use them, effectively with discipline. By the time you leave the physical body, you will be a master of these energies and may accrue significant occult /tantrik skills to make the death process very systematic. Depending on the other factors in the chart, he can also grant Moksh or at least significant spiritual growth.

Transits of Saturn are relatively long at about 2.5 years per sign, and he goes retrograde for 4-5 months per year. Thus he ensures learning, re-learning and revising his lessons. Then as per the Vimhottari dasha system, Saturn’s Major period, Mahadasha is quite long, 19 years. Also his sub-periods/Antar-dasha, in other planet’s Mahadashas is also quite long. So keep these factors in mind while analysing Saturn and the timing/intensity of his results.

And then as always, the situation will improve after Saturn matures. Also if the ascendant sign/lord, birth Moon, Mars and 8th house lord are well placed, the negatives of this position can be reduced.

Jupiter, Saturn placed in the 8th house

I have written about Moon, Sun and Mercury and their effects in the 8th house and also how Rahu/Ketu perform in the 8th house in my earlier posts.

Rahu Ketu in the 2/8 house axis

Rahu and Ketu are completely astral graha. They do not give any material results on their own. Their actual results are almost completely astral in nature. They influence the material only through the other planets they are linked to. Any placement of Rahu and Ketu will be influenced by the nature of the sign he is in, the owner of this sign and his power to give results and the other planets who conjoin/ aspect Rahu/Ketu.

If either of them are placed alone in the 8th house they perform very badly, this is because of their completely astral nature. The 8th house is quite cryptic to begin with and if either of these two are let loose here without any influence from the other planets the results can be quite devastating on the material front. They might give good occult and spiritual experiences but the effect on the physical personality and environment will not be good. Then the periods of these graha, as per the Vimhottari system, the Ketu Mahadasha or the Rahu Mahadasha will be fraught with dangers. Also it would be advisable to be careful during their sub-periods within other planets Mahadasha. Keep an eye on their transits too, as they last for a longish 1.5yrs/sign. However these will be very rare charts. But if you do get such charts also go through the characteristics of the Nakshatra that he is placed in. In these cases, the subtle influences of the lunar mansions will be stronger and should be given a look.

However Rahu or Ketu in the 8th house can give comparatively better effects if there is some planet with him or at the very least strongly aspecting him. So always first analyse this other planet and then the Rahu or Ketu. The negative effects of this placement can somewhat reduced if the ascendant sign/lord is highly powerful and capable of giving good results.

Rahu Ketu in the 2/8 house axis

Rahu placed in the 8th house (Ketu in the 2nd house).

You will feel dissociated from your family, its resources, the family history etc. You might neglect the affairs of the second or handle them in a typically vague/disinterested manner or perhaps your birth family refuses to give you your share in the family wealth. There might be an undercurrent of bitterness and strain, try to be patient and sensible. Loss of wealth resources or their mismanagement is indicated. Avoid gambling and keep a monthly account of your earning/spending. There might be a tendency to be pessimistic and needlessly morbid. There is a good chance that would be some speech impediment or at the very least you will be misunderstood by others. Try to avoid swear words and unnecessary sarcasm and criticism. This was for Ketu in the 2nd house.

Now for Rahu in the 8th. If Rahu does not receive direction and beneficial influence from other planets this will be dangerous. Rahu will work in his ‘lower’ form and create scope for bad actions, criminal behaviour etc and the shadow side of the 8th will be channelised. The 8th house’s energies are very destructive and unless used wisely, these will cause several problems. Excessive uncontrolled desire to experience the 8this dangerous. 8th house briefly is physical death, release, separation, legacies, spirituality, longevity, organs of sex/reproduction, childbirth, surgeries, accidents, occult, tantra, deep thinking, movement of vital energy/kundalini, shocks, traumas, sudden changes, mysteries, perversity, deep-seated diseases, strange and not of this world.

If a properly directed and balanced Rahu is placed in the 8th then he will pull towards the secrets of the mind, the tantra, occult, the intangible powerful magics. You will be allowed access into these extra dimensions. He will also amplify the effects of the other planet who is influencing him and the effects of the sign and its lord. You can be really very good at all this esoteric stuff. But you will not be drawn towards organised religion, humanitarian views and will have differences with your Teacher-father. So try to develop your own life philosophy and stick to it. You can be very good at the professions indicated by the 8th, researchers, detectives, scientists, surgeons, financial wizards, explorers, travellers etc. Travelling might be extensive and more for pleasure than for work.

You can also gain from your spouse and his/her family, bequeaths and inheritance is quite possible. However when accepting these from others remain respectful and acknowledge them. Rahu is a pretender, so if you are not grateful about these assets from the dead/others you will suffer from bad karma. You will want to forge new identities for yourself, chameleon-like shifts in the personality can be triggered by Rahu. e.g you might want too many cosmetic surgeries and thus lose your self and also your assets. Be careful with such desires/urges linked to 8th house keywords. Do not over-reach. You might suffer secret diseases, problems in reproductive organs, if you are a woman then in childbirth too, accidents, surgeries and diseases related to over-heating. Basically the movement of pran/vital energy in the body will be highly changeable which will be the root cause of all your problems. Generally longevity is good, but then the other placements should also be considered before coming to a conclusion on the lifespan.

Rahu Ketu in the 2/8 house axis

Ketu placed in the 8th house (Rahu in the 2ndhouse).

This is again a very sensitive placement. If there are benefic planets like Jupiter or Venus helping out this will work well else there will be problems.

You develop ambitions about increasing your wealth and assets and maintaining them for your use. Rahu in the 2nd manages to keep the family connection intact. There will be a desire to be in control of the family treasures and using them for your own purposes. You will want solidity, material things you can touch and increase. There will be intense desire for the material (Maya) but satisfaction can ultimately never come from the material. So do not get too obsessed about the gains and losses of the material. Accumulating money is good but try to put a limit to how much is enough and what ways are legal, keep your ambitions reasonable. Try to avoid criminal activities like cheating and bribery. You can be a good astrologer, banker or a singer/speaker. Will have a attractive voice and face. The desire is to experience all the keywords of the 2nd house. Over-indulgence and intoxication in the senses is possible, so limit your drink/ smoke intake and avoid drug intake. Rahu in the 2nd generally gives material comforts, but the problems start when you don’t consciously put a stop to his endless desires.

And on the other side, Ketu in the 8th, you have no desire to change, to transform and to re-invent yourself. The secrets of the mind, of the esoteric, the tantra, the intangible but powerful magics hold no charm for you in the present life. But you have experienced these mysteries to the fullest in your past lives and you carry with you the deepest learnings related to the 8th. You will not be aware of these. But if you can focus on them consciously, they will be available. If Ketu is working on his higher levels, he grants fearlessness. And this is not because of ignorance, it is from these past lives complete experience and learning. You are not scared of transformations of any sort. All professions indicated by the 8th house can be performed by Ketu in depth. The reproductive organs will be weak, so avoid promiscuous behaviour and keep yourself healthy. In case of any medical condition here, go to the doctor. Then the number of children will be less, especially male children may not be born or be short lived. The spouse’s family may be a drain on you and your assets, do not let them over-ride you.

Analysing Rahu and Ketu in this 2nd and 8th house axis can be quite challenging so take your time over it. If the Rahu/Ketu axis gets malefic influences or are debilitated, then there will be a reversal of fortune, situation can go from good to bad very fast. These two are eternally different, the desire to experience vs the apathy to experience. And the two houses in this axis are also completely different, the earthy and solid 2nd vs astral and emotional 8th. The 2nd house is bindings, Maya and 8this Moksh, release. When the Rahu/Ketu occupy these two signs, a balance is sought between mirror images which can be sometimes quite difficult to achieve.

Moon, Sun, Mercury in the 8th house

Planets placed in the 8th are quite the transformative agents in your life. The 8th is the house of catastrophic changes to the self and the environment that one is placed in. These changes are linked to the planets occupying the 8th house. As per the Vimshottari dasha system, the Mahadasha periods of these planets and their antardashas in other planet’s Mahadashas are especially transformative and ‘shocking’.

Moon, Sun, Mercury in the 8th house

Moon placed in the 8th house.

Chandra-ashtma is generally considered unfavourable. Moon is debilitated in the natural 8th sign Scorpio. In the 8th house too, generally he is not comfortable. Moon reflects and carries impressions from his surroundings. In the natural house of Mars, he is supposed to be competitive and innovative. And here in the 8th, he feels secure in strange environments of unexpected shocks, changes and catastrophic transformations.

As the Moon transits the entire zodiac in 28 days, the Moon transits are very frequent at 2.25days per sign. So it might be difficult to keep track of this. However the Mahadasha period of the Moon and his antardashas as per the Vimshottari system would be quite turbulent.

Moon is the agent of the mind, a benefic and it is placed in a Dushamsthan, a house of turmoil. So you can guess how this is going to work out.

The mild Moon now feels good when he is in an emotional crisis. He, who generally loves rhythms, emotional security, comforts and secure places is drawn towards upheavals! Thus if the situation is peaceful, he will feel uncomfortable and trigger the emotional crisis himself. But if an emotional crisis is erupting around him, he will act as a calming agent. He can absorb the influences of these traumas into his own self. The more terrible the better! Quite contrary behaviour from our regular rhythmic Moon. This continuous violence in the astral (sookshma sharir) and sub-conscious levels can impact his life-span (actually the flow of pran is affected) unless the ascendant lord/sign and other placements indicate a good longevity. Else a shorter but highly vigorous life is indicated.

The mother will have problems and the he may not have a very stable relationship with her. The childhood can thus become difficult as the mother may be changeable in nature and volatile in her affections. There will be a separation from the mother on the emotional/physical levels. In extreme cases he may not know who exactly is his birth mother, e.g adopted children. He may be hypersensitive and ‘odd’ as intuition might develop in the childhood itself. Unless there is someone to guide him in this age, these things will have a life-time effect. This relationship pattern may continue in the adulthood, he may have multiple affairs or marriages as a rhythm of sudden/shocking changes in relationships may set in. A tendency to have secret relationships may exist. And most importantly after the mother separates from him (especially after her death), he matures and asserts his personality/ gifts very rapidly.

There may be hidden problems in the medical conditions ruled by the Moon. Also the eye-sight can be affected. It happens several times that such children conceal their occult abilities for whatever reason. And as energies if concealed erupt out with more force, these occult abilities may erupt in the later life damaging the physical eyes.

This is a great placement for psychological counsellors, doctors, nurses, professions related to death, detectives and tantriks. If he can develop the Moon’s gift – intuition, he can see omens/visions etc which can be used to help others. He can sense unseen needs and can fulfil them. And he has unseen needs himself, so should try to introspect once in a while. If the energies can be channelised in this way he will gain both, Moon-intuition and 8th-occult. Else he will suffer on several levels.

This is the most difficult placement for the birth Moon.

The only exception is when Moon as the lord of the 12th (Leo ascendant) or as the lord of the 6th (Aquarius ascendant), is placed in the 8th house. In these cases, the negative effects of this placement is somewhat reduced. The second exception will be if the ascendant sign/lord is highly powerful and capable of giving good results.

Moon, Sun, Mercury in the 8th house

Sun placed in the 8th house.

Here it is a case of a natural malefic occupying a house of turmoil. The self-ego and creativity of the self tends towards the secret. A good detective, a surgeon or a tantrik or more likely linked to secret (or even criminal) finance. Can get legacies and inherit from dead relatives.

Sun never really likes rules and regulations and in this house of secrets if he decides to disregard them, he can actually be a successful criminal. He is quite good at using the energies of the 8th. Mars, the natural ruler of the 8th sign Scorpio, and the Sun get along quite well. So the innate nature of the 8th house welcomes the Sun. He does a lot of activities but these will not be visible in the general public. This Sun will prefer to be in the center of the activities of the 8th house, the internal, healing energies, tantric practices, occult, situations dealing with death, emergencies and disasters etc, confidential information/legal cases, the king-maker, in covert operations etc thus the society may indirectly benefit.

He has access to secret knowledge and knows how to use it creatively. However if the personality does not honor the society or its requirements then this placement allows secret breaking of rules and gains thereof. This can cause infamy or disappearance from the society. There may be secret bad habits and eventually a sudden death. Longevity will be slightly lesser than average as the level of activity during the life time is very high. The ‘heat’ within the body will be high and there may be hidden problems with the heart, lungs and eyesight.

The personality does not agree with his Teacher-Father. He does not like or agree with formal religion and philosophies at all. (The 8th is counted twelfth from the 9th house) However can be great in the occult and the spiritual.

This is a rather typical placement and should be navigated sensibly. There may be periods of infamy, loss of leadership, damage to self-ego and loss of public image. The Sun means light and the 8th is the house of mystery. Avoiding the ‘strange’ will cause more problems. Accept that there will be continuous unpredictable changes related to the keywords of the Sun and adapt.

The only exception is when Sun is the lord of the 12th or lord of the 6th (Virgo and Pisces ascendants), is placed in the 8th house. In these cases, the negative effects of this placement is somewhat reduced. The second exception will be if the ascendant sign/lord is highly powerful and capable of giving good results.

Moon, Sun, Mercury in the 8th house

Mercury placed in the 8th house.

This can be a very good placement depending on the rest of the chart. In a good chart, this will create an extraordinary individual. Mercury is clear action, no deep philosophical fluff here. He will use his skills, with courage, intelligence, logic and surety and act with his voice and hands. Talk and Trade.

He can dive deep into the limitless database of the 8th and organise it. Retrieve relevant actionable information and then act on it. Depending on the rest of the chart this placement can grant wealth, wealth-making behaviour, good communication skills, mental strength, the deepest reserves of courage and a thirst for exploration. And he can earn, manage and increase the gifts offered by this mysterious house. Mercury in the 8th house will add to the powers represented by the occult, tantra and other mysteries, he has the physical skills to work here and the mental fortitude to sustain.

The house 3rd from the birth Mercury is the house in which thoughts and deepest wishes loop and linger. Thus the 10th house and its keywords of profession, work ethic, social standing, career, social mobility, personal father, responsibilities, social law and social image are given a thought to. If the rest of the chart is favourable this placement can boost all behaviour promoting these activities.

Mercury is ultimately the natural lord of the 6th house, the maha-dushansthan. So in the 8th, his negative qualities get reduced and he can give relatively beneficial results. There may be a few diseases (a regular routine check-up after mid-life is advisable) but over all a reasonably long life. Physical death is not traumatic either. Mercury is also the lord of the natural 3rd house. This is a rather typical house can be the worst of the lot given a free rein. As the lord of the 3rd too, Mercury finds the 8th to be a suitable environment.

Adapt and change is the catchword of the 8th house and the planets placed here, add their flavour to this mysterious house of deepest change. Remain aware of the potential transforming agents in your life and be prepared to face situations created by their energies.
