Analysing Varna of the Nakshatra

(I wrote a detailed post on the energy dynamics of the four Varna of a Dharmic society here. This post is about using the Varna concept in Jyotish.)

In Uttar Bharat, the signs/ rashi are assigned Varna. This concept is commonly used in the Ashtakoota system for matching charts for marriage. In this system, the birth Moon sign determines the varna.

In Dakshin Bharat, the Nakshatra varna is more commonly used. The Varna of the Lunar mansion occupied by the birth Moon ie the Janma Nakshatra, is considered during matching charts for marriage.

  • Vipra – Ashwini Pushya Ashleysha Vishakha Anuradha Shatataraka Poorvabhadrapada.
  • Kshatriya – Bharani Punarvasu Magha Swati Jeyshtha Dhanishtha Uttarabhadrapada.
  • Vaishya – Krutika Aradra Poorvaphalguni Chitra Moola Shravan Revati
  • Shudra – Rohini Mruga Uttaraphalguni Hasta Poorvaashadha Uttaraashadha

And the graha also have Varna.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

The Varna concept is used in marriage chart matching but also can be applied in regular life, for analysing the personality, the mental/ emotional tendencies etc. If you are aware of your Mind you can proactively live a more settled and successful life. The Varna of the nakshatra occupied by the Moon, ie the Janma nakshatra, will indicate your mental tendencies. The Varna of the Lagna nakshatra, ie the lunar mansion occupied by the ascendant degree will give some pointers as to the overall personality and the environment you are placed in. And I have observed that in charts with powerful Rahu or Ketu, the nakshatra occupied by the more powerful node also has a significant but subtle impact on the person.

The Nakshatra level analysis indicates the subtle points about the personality which are generally ignored. This sort of analysis will be relevant only for those charts which are on a reasonably good evolutionary level.  You have to have some level of self awareness and some clarity about your life and life purpose to understand and use this information. It is of no use for individuals who do not wish to self introspect or make efforts to change themselves.

So check out the lunar mansion occupied by your birth Moon. The Moon is the indicator of the Mind and you are basically what your Mind says you are. This is why a brilliantly placed birth Moon is the best ‘yog’ possible. The nakshatra of the Moon works as a filter between you/your Mind and everything else. It also filters out what you need for this life from your sum total. ie your astral self which is the Moon, is filtered by this nakshatra and this creates the Mind for your current lifetime.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

If your birth Moon occupies a Vipra Nakshatra then you will naturally feel more inclined to the Vipra type of activities. You are highly intelligent, you learn things by heart and also understand concepts very deeply, you are willing to learn. You are capable of studying long hours, practicing your routines seriously, very dedicated, you have faith in an higher intelligence and are religious or spiritual in some way. Your ideal way of working out things is through civilised dialogue, trying to understand and thus resolve differences, you are rather philosophical by nature. You like helping others and may be seen as a wise elder by others around you. You can become a very good teacher, counsellor, advisor, researcher, writer, etc. If you perform the Gayatri puja, ie the trikaal Sandhya sincerely you will get excellent results from this sadhana. You are the intellectual and philosophical foundation of the Dharmic society. It is the duty of the Vipra to learn, teach and to do pujas for the wellbeing of the individual/ public. To literally share their blessings. To follow Dharma in life and also to motivate others to do so by example and by teachings. So if you engage in such activities, you will get the desired results easily and you will also feel deeply satisfied on the inside. However do not let others take advantage of your typical nature and try to be practical about things.

If you are in a profession where you are doing these sort of activities then you will feel emotionally fulfilled as you do your work and also progress well. Else you can take up a hobby or do some above mentioned activities in your spare time which will help you find an outlet for your Varna energy.

If your Lagna is in a Vipra nakshtra then you will be more often physically placed in situations described above. eg if you have a Vipra Lagna nakshatra and Shudra Janma nakshatra, then you may be required to teach mechanical engineering applications to engineering students.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

If your birth Moon is in a Kshatriya nakshatra then you are more aggressive and physical by nature. You like exercising and are the one who wants to get up at 5am to go to the gym. You may have learnt marital arts or may be good at team games or may compete in individual sports. You cannot bear injustice and are willing to stand up for the values you believe in. You are an aggressive person and this will be evident in some way eg in your speech, mannerisms, body language or you may be outrightly violent. In our Dharma the Kshatriya are responsible for punishing specific types types of criminals (An enemy/Atatayi is the one who the intention of killing, damaging or hurting – sets fire, poisons, attacks with weapons, steals wealth, loots property, robs land or kidnaps women. Such Atatayi are given the death penalty and this is the Dharma, the responsibility of the Kshatriya varna). Kshatriya are also responsible for governing the nation, so you might feel comfortable in government jobs and you will genuinely feel responsible and do good in such jobs. In our current society, you can also take up a profession in law enforcement, police, military, etc where you feel that you are in the role of a protector and have some scope for physical activity. You are the protective and governing foundation of the Dharmic society. However do not let others take advantage of your typical nature. If someone purposely tries to push your buttons do take a minute to think through things before leaping into action.

If you are not in a profession which offers you an outlet for these energies then you should take up some hobby where you can act in the ways described above. eg learning a martial art or reading about wars and war strategies etc.

If your Lagna is in a Kshatriya nakshtra then you will be more often placed in the situations described above. eg your Lagna nakshatra is Kshatriya varna and Janma nakshatra is Vaishya, then you may be required to trade in weapons or be a supplier to the army.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

If your Janma nakshatra is of the Vaishya varna then you are more comfortable in commerce. Buying, selling, trading, bargaining is your forte. You like talking, communicating, keeping track of what is happening, what can be capitalised on, what can be converted into value. You have an innate understanding of how money, stock markets, financial transactions etc work. You are more comfortable in situations where these sort of energies prevail. You are practical about things and a good negotiator. You are aware of your strengths and weakness and can accurately gauge the position of others you are dealing with. You rarely give others the benefit of doubt and will not help others unless you stand to gain something from it. You will succeed in all activities where the theme is exchange of value for mutual profit. You are the foundation of value and trade in a Dharmic society. However do guard against others using your own nature against you. Profit attracts you but you should not engage in dubious or risky actions for money, these can eventually rebound on you.

If you are in a profession with these sort of vibes then you will feel more satisfied in life and also earn loads of money. But if you are not then you should engage in some of these Vaishya type of activities in your spare time, it will help you find an outlet from your innate nature.

If your ascendant degree, ie lagna nakshatra is of the Vaishya varna you will be put into situations where you will be required to value, trade, exchange etc as described above. eg Your lagna nakshatra is Vaishya but your Janma nakshtra is a Vipra then you might become an economist, someone who philosophises and teaches theories about money.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

If your birth Moon is in a Shudra varna nakshatra then you have the capacity to work and produce stuff. You know how to get things done, set up a work flow or a production line, determine realistic goals and practical deadlines. You are the one sincere person in your office who always achieves targets. Learning skills is easy for you. You are hard working, systematic and capable of following rules. You have a practical mind and can organise things. You are the ideal worker and depending on the rest of the chart can do well in any sector where there is actual measurable output, eg in industries, around machines, agriculture farms, animal husbandry, carpentry, mechanics etc. You know how physical things can be worked together to actually produce tangible material, ie food, metal items, cloth, shoes, buildings, roads etc. Everything that you see around you is ‘produced’ or ‘built’ and thus is your domain. There are unlimited opportunities for you as you are the physical foundation, the material prosperity on which the Dharmic society rests.

You should pursue activities where you can actually create something on the material level. If you are in such a profession then it will help you channelise your energies and gain. But if you are not, then choose an art or craft type of a hobby where you work with your hands. This will give you the necessary emotional satisfaction and help you balance out your innate energies.

If your Lagna nakshatra is Shudra then you will be put in situations where you are required to physically act to produce material stuff. eg If your Lagna nakshatra is Shudra and your Janma nakshatra is Vipra then you may be a publisher who publishes text books, Dharmic books, books on philosophy etc.

(This is the first time on the internet, that Varna and Nakshatra Varna have been analysed in depth.) Do read the previous post on the nature of the four Varna and how the Dharmic society is based on the equal foundations of the four Varna. Also how an individual uses the Varna to maintain Dharma within the self. Unless you understand the previous post, you won’t be able to make full use of this one.

Thank you for writing such an in depth article about varna of the nakshtra, it’s immensely helpful.

But I have some trouble to understand how some nakshatra can have a rakshasa nature but be of Brahmin varna, like Krittika or Vishakha. Your description of the Vipra/Brahmin nakshatra seems hardly to fit with a rakshasa nature, yet they are classified as such. Can you clarify this point?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
You are mixing the attributes. Dev Manushya Rakshas are Gan गण This post is about the four Varna.

Gan and Varna mean completely different things. Something like a fruit can b green coloured and sour in taste.

Eg vipra varna and rakshas gan Ashleysha someone frm my family.
An excellent Jyotishi. Practiced fr over 50yrs. highly intelligent, remembers everything. Read all ved vedant BG bhashyas itihas puran etc all in Sanskrit. Is fluent in 4 languages. Writes books gives pravachans etc. perfect Vipra activities and behaviour with students/ clients.
But the nature is typically Rakshasi esp in personal life. Frowns, an irritated tone in the voice, ready to argue, will never speak / behave kindly or nicely etc.

Observe the people around you and ur Sample charts. Nakshatra level analysis is not fr beginners.

Thank you very much for your explanation, the concrete example clarifies a lot how varna and gana work together. _/\_

Many thanks for such valuable information.

    Dear Madam,

Thank you for writing this illuminating article.

Since Rahu indicates strong attachments, does Rahu in a particular nakshatra indicate strong attachments to the activities / environments / persons of the Varna of that nakshatra?

Likewise, will Ketu’s nakshatra indicate lack of or eventual dissipation of attachment to the activities / environments / persons of its Varna?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
      Yes.
Use Rahu Ketu nakshatra varna only if the chart is strong enough or they r yogkarak.

        Dear Madam,

I looked through your linked article on “Rahu Ketu as Yogkarak”, and have a few doubts. I’m under the impression that retrograde planets are usually considered to be placed in the previous sign / house, if such is indeed the case, will Ketu in 1st house with retrograde Lord of 9th still be considered a Yogkarak?

If Ketu is a Yogkarak, does Rahu also automatically become a Yogkarak and vice-versa? (I’m appealing to symmetry here)

Finally, do these combinations hold in the Navamsa, but considering signs instead of houses?

      2. astrologerbydefault Avatar

        Hi there

Can one become a good writer with Shudra Janma Nakshatra – making something with bands, producing in the materika world? And can one do well in education sector with Vipra Lagna/Shudra Janma? I’m in teaching and writing business with this combination but have struggled to produce things.

    Namaskar Tejaswini ji,

No words to describe how blessed we feel to get this immense knowledge that you are sharing with us 🙏

Not related to this article. I have a query.

This is related to placing (hanging) dead parent/ ancestors photo in home. I was advised to hang it on South wall but not in the main hall of the house wherein people going and coming inside the house from main door can watch the photo .

Also.. if I wanted to shift the photos to the other room , it’s considered as a second bedroom but no one sleeps in there. Even that is not allowed it seems.
Please throw some light on it.

Secondly, is it true that it is advisable to do the pind daan tarpan for ancestors at Gaya, Kashi or Rameshwar and after that no need of doing the annual tarpan. In our family tradition we do it every month for first year and later annually once at the actual thithi of their death.

    Thanks
    sri

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
first of all it is not compulsory to hang the photos. but it is an emotional thing so mostly everyone does this.
in my home, my mom’s pic is on the south wall of my dad’s bedroom.
      any south wall is fine.

but if your family brahmin has some rules then you should follow them.

doing pindadaan at these places is the final pindadaan, no more pindadaan required after this final one.
but tarpan is a regular thing. some families do it daily, some do it once a year on sarvapitari /mahalaya amavasya or on the same tithi in pitrupaksh, or on the tithi of the actual death etc. in this follow your family customs

        Hi Madam,

One query about the same topic. My father’s father’s brother’s wife ( chulat aaji) died last yr, and it’s yet to be 1 year for the varsha shardddha. So, i heard some people from my family saying that we don’t have to do/shouldn’t do the yearly sharddha/tarpan of other close relatives who had died before, as we are in sutak still ( i thought sutak lasts for 12 days only). So, should we do it or skip it? We generally do it twice, once on the tithi of death and once on sarv pitri amavsya.
        Thanks

      2. astrologerbydefault Avatar

        Hi there
Sutak is only for 10-13 days from the day of the death. ie till the first pindadaan for that departed soul.

What if someone deliberately tries to hurt someone for years and to defend that, person starts using harsh words to elders. Say, if there is problem between in laws and daughter in law.. here in laws use tactics against DIL and she in turn use harsh words or abuse them verbally to protect herself..and there is no way out .. so now what kind of karma is accumulating on both the parties and what can be done here… since divorce is not an option.

As per your advice regarding my earlier comments on this page, I tried to learn more about the Rashi-tulya-Navamsha and Navamsha-tulya-Rashi techniques. As it turned out, your exposition of the Rashi-tulya-Navamsha in “Delve Deeper into the D9 Navamsha” is the clearest one online. I request you to write an article on the Navamsha-tulya-Rashi technique as well.

Also, if Yogakaraka (according to ascendant) is in 11th house but in Nidhanamsha, should it give materially benefic or malefic results? (At least as per my own life so far, I have suffered an important loss during its bhukti but I would like to know if there are any special considerations in the Jyotish theory)

      Hi there
i have written only on what I have practiced and seen in my life.
There is no substitute for practice, analysis and experience.
you have to be dispassionate and logical, there are patterns for everything you see around you.
if u have a headache now, it means that the choghadia has changed or the hora has changed or the moon has changed its sign or even its navamsha. there are always patterns. things do not occur randomly.

i insist that students of Jyotish have their own sample sets of at least 30 charts of family / friends to study.
Analyse the charts and observe the person. this is a lifetime study till the physical death of that person. then note that time / date of death too. it is a very detailed study of the human life in very great depth.

      ref book CS Patel.

the planets in nidhanamsha do not give pleasing results,
or even those in the 6th or to a lesser extent the 12th house amshas.
i have mentioned this in the posts on D 9.

      Hi there
      Good.

      and the Q …
it is good to know that you are at least studying Jyotish.
use bhav chalit, esp if the birth is beyond the tropics you have to cast the unequal houses chart. it will add accuracy.

vargottam is based on the signs
bhavottam is based on the houses

bhavottam/ vargottam graha is especially useful when you are predicting the timing of the events.
if you are using a sign based dasha system, eg kaalchakra then pay special attention to the vargottam graha. they will give stronger results in their dasha periods by these dasha systems.

if you are using vimshottari type dasha systems where the bhav are more important, then the bhavottam graha will give stronger results in their dasha periods.

both bhavottam and vargottam graha gain extra strength to give results.

I did read somewhere(may be in Vasishta Ramayan)..

    It suggests…to realize urself..
Assume Atma as Vast as Brahmand(Universe) (or) Even Tiniest than an atom…

Soul is said as a spark from Paramatma..
And..also says its indifferent to Paramatma..
    How it’s possible..?

Is there any difference between Realizing soul as Big as Universe..and Realizing soul as very tiny thing.?

I heard..the Difference between Shiva and Vishnu is..
Shiva is the supreme soul that always exists..
Vishnu means is the same supreme soul spread & exists everywhere…
Can it be compare with…Brahmanda & Tiny soul that spreads&exists all over brahmanda..?

      Hi there
Every book says that this has to be experienced by each one. It cannot be described.
The Vijnyan Bhairav tantra gives the various ways you can visualise.
      Read it.

The beauty of our Dharma is that every word describes the Advaita but only one aspect of it.

just the words (i am not using them in the context of the Bhagwans)
Shiva is the Advaita the Para… the eternal auspiciousness.
Vishnu is the Advaita .. the eternal consciousness ingrained in everything and everywhere.
      there is no difference.
try to change your perspective to see the common thread linking everything together.
eg. a woollen sweater. it has a body, two arms a neck etc, but made with only one thread.
eg so many ornaments, bangles, earrings, necklaces, but all made of that same material, gold.
there is no difference, the chaitanya in your is the same inside everyone.. there is never ever any difference

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
I have written several posts on Rahu and Ketu.
      Read them.

If Rahu is the one who creates illusions, then Rahu is the only one who knows how to come out of them. Or else he is then the one who will decide when to stop creating them.
Why give so much power to Rahu?

      Rahu does not misguide.
      No one misguides you.
      You choose to be misguided.
Why blame Rahu if you get misguided? This is sheer laziness and irresponsibility.

It is his job to show you illusions. He is a graha and this is what he has been assigned to do.
But it is your choice. You must choose to not chase after these illusions.
What is stopping you from training your mind to recognise these ideas as illusions and to stop chasing them?
      Develop your Vivek and Vairagya.
Eg you do not consume drugs, but your friend does. One day he brings you that drug and tells you it is very nice etc and that you must experience it. To drink it or not is your own choice (not your friend’s and not anyone else’s).
Do not blame Rahu for your own actions.

Achieving Moksh is as hard as you make it for yourself.

Exactly that is what I want to discuss…
But..I didn’t know correct way or example to convey properly..
May be it takes much time to understand things upto that level…

When I try to meditate on myself…
Sometimes I assume..self as vast Universe..
    I feels like broad minded..
and then immediately I sense a feeling that even in that vast universe there is a tiniest/original source which is base to whole universe..

Then..I myself try to focus on that smallest source by narrowing myself..I vibrate like very narrow minded..
and immediately my conscience says why becoming narrow..”what’s in that small thing exists in everything around you…”

I dont get proper conclusion…I dont get sense of”this is IT” ..it always like ever changing game with new rules everytime.

At the end…I dont get satisfaction..
I neither get realization what is liberation..
Nor get at least proper path fit to me to know about liberation..

Thank you for merciful Guidance Ma’am..
    🙏🙏

    Ok ma’am..
May be its true sometimes irresponsibility causes me problems..
Sometimes it’s like…I’m facing same illusion again&again with new face even after break it and concluded with ultimate truth related to it..

That’s where I felt tired myself and try to compromise…
That’s why even when I knows someone trying to faking in a silly way…I compromise sometimes to believe them&suffer…
It’s very clear to me starting to end..

When..I try to find method to counter repeated trials by rahu nakshatra(Ardra)..I find Uttarashada Nakashatra as its Naidhana Tara..
The keywords & attributes of Uttarashada Nakshatra is became very useful for me develop unshakable behaviour to illusions..

I’m just trying to know what is what in spiritual world..

Thank you for kind reply ma’am..

I felt Navatara Chakra can be very useful to Adjust our behaviour/attitude towards situations linked to a perticular Nakshatra..

I.e To face problems associated with a nakshatra we can observe Keywords of its Naidhan Tara to adjust our behaviour..
Or..To bring favourable conditions to a nakshatra we can observe keywords related to Adimitra Tara of that nakshatra..

    It’s my personal thinking..
Is there any logic in it..or it’s my false assumption..?

    Namaste Ma’am..

    1)One who realized self becomes calm,peaceful,Egoless etc…
But..Sun said to be Karaka of self & sun gives Ego,selfish, proud tendencies also..
How who realizes their that sun dont become proud, selfish,Egoist etc..?

2)In Astrology it says two types of Karakas..
    Sthira Karaka & Chara Karaka..
Sun said as Karaka of Atma..
People having Chara Atma karaka Moon,Venus,Saturn etc..other than sun..
    What it means..?
Is it means their self connected to other planets rather than sun..?

    3)Generally it says…To Spiritual Evolution
one should meditate & explore inner world..become Antarmukhi(introvert)..
So…Outer world or (Bahirmukhi Nature) dont help us in spiritual Evolution..?
We Experience Some Dashas..we experiences Outgoing nature is more suitable to that time..
    to involve in outer world..

Is it wrong to become out going to release out extra energy..?
Is it obstruct our Spiritual Evolution..?

      Hi there

I asked about Sun & Atma karaka..
Because..When I entered in Sun Dasha I consciously Experienced some selfish,Self centered,Egoist tendencies which I usually didn’t experience before..

I thought This Sun which said as Karaka of Self..
    Planet of Causal body(Anandamay kosha)..
    Ruling planet of sahasrara Chakra…
And..it also causes Egoistic, selfish,Narrow minded tendencies..

How one reaches that self becomes Calm&peaceful and Egoless soul..?

      Hi there
Sun is karak of the jiv atma
      Not param atma.

    Namaste Ma’am..

    In BG Krishna Paramatma says..
“Yuktahara Vihara” can helpful to Yog..
I think that verse explains ans to my doubt..?

And…Yes Ma’am you already mentioned Sun represents Jivatma..
Sorry ma’am… I thought Sun being ruling planet of Anandamay kosha & sahasrara chakra represents only self in Jivatma(Self + Baggage of karma)..

    I thought like…There is Jivatma,Atma & Paramatma(self+karmas,self,supreme self)…
In that sun represents self..(which is spark of Paramatma & one step less than paramatma)..

    Thank you for guidance Ma’am…🙏

      Hi there
he does not ‘rule’ the Anandamay kosha & sahasrara chakra, is just linked to them

  29. Sujith Avatar
    Sujith

And…I heard Jivatma resides at Ajnya chakra..
So..Sun rules above sahasrara chakra can represents something higher identity than Jivatma..

    That’s my reasoning mistake..

    Thank you Ma’am..

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
the sahasrara is not just the one point, it is a complicated structure with several components all the top of your head.

Technically the highest energy is at the point where men tie their shikha, the Vamadev or the vama bindu

    And..I didn’t know about that..
Obviously becoz limited knowledge about it..
And it’s not surprise..I never heard this Vama bindu or Vamadev point..

    Hello Tejaswini,

Thanks for the fresh perspective. Broadly, it tallies quite well with my collection of Charts.

I have a question for Charts where Moon is involved in Sukshma Parivartan. For eg:- I have a Chart wherein the Lagna is Vipra Nakshatra and the Moon at first glance is Vaishya Nakshatra but interchanges and becomes Shudra Nakshatra.

What field would suit such a person as they are looking for guidance for their life path ahead.

I would be obliged if you could address the query and look forward to your blog posts on such rarely heard or read topics. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
