Exercises for controlling the mind

There was a request for more practical type posts. This despite having written about so many small things that you can do to increase your ability to concentrate, ie to increase your power of making your mind still at one point. So here is one more exercise. But you must do one of these exercises sincerely and regularly, just reading about them is of no use.

I have written about Tratak, ie staring at one single point. The following can be used as your focus,

  • The center of the Shri chakra,
  • The rising or setting Sun, ie when it is a red colored dot at the horizon
  • The full Moon.
  • The flame of a Deepak, ie Agni.

These are the best options, they are pure energies directly from nature ie Prakruti herself. But apparently if you find these original geometries and focus points boring, let’s stare at something more interesting, your own face.

www.psychologicallyastrologically.com

This is how you go about it.

  • You will need a good quality clean mirror. If you have the water of the river Ganga, sprinkle a few drops on this before starting, with the intention that she cleanses it of all negativity, enhances positivity. Or pray to your source of faith to clean it of all negativity, to create positivity in it and sprinkle regular water on it.
  • A reasonably lit, neat and clean room. Sprinkle Ganga water all around to clean the room of negative vibrations and entities. Or you can clean out your space using your preferred method, eg blowing a conch, ringing bells, burning incense etc.
  • Sit on your Asan. The position should be in an Yog Asan, ie yogic posture, choose any in which you can sit for about 5mins comfortably. Your back, neck and head should be aligned, no slouching. Breathe deeply, relax. Recite Om 3 times, drag out the ‘mmmmm’ part. Call on your favourite deity, ie source of faith etc to help you in your endeavour.
  • Keep your mirror in front of your face at eye level about 3-4 feet away, so that you can clearly see your own face. Take a few deep breaths, relax yourself.
  • First look at your face reflected in the mirror for a minute. Take in your eyes, eyebrows, forehead, nose, chin, cheeks, lips, neck etc.
  • Then focus on your own third eye position, ie the point between your eyebrows in the mirror. Do this for only one minute initially.
  • After you finish, close your eyes, remain sitting for a few minutes. In case you see any visions etc, observe them dispassionately. Get up.
  • This is all there is to the exercise itself. It is quite simple to perform.

This mirror needs to be stored carefully. It should be wrapped in a red paper or a red cloth. Do not let others view it or see their face in it. (If you are already using a mirror for scrying then get a different one for Tratak, do not mix the two)

Your Asan too is your personal object of power. Do not let others touch it or sit on it.

The T&C.

Breathing – Breathe in an even rhythm, slow deep breaths, abdominal breaking. If you feel the breath is agitated, it means that the mind is agitated and you must slow down or stop your exercise .

Mantra – Do not recite any mantra. There should be no thought, you cannot think of anything, even of a mantra. Your mind should be trained to focus only at your chosen focus point in the mirror. For a few days you will not be able to concentrate on your own reflection, the mind will wander. But as you progress, it will get will get easier. Even later, your reflected face will vanish from the mirror, as your subconscious mind starts getting active, you might see visions before you. Be careful when this starts happening as this is often past karma is dredged out from the depths of the subconscious. After this the thought-less stage which comes while during Dhyan will happen.

Time – You will be doing this alone with no teacher with you, so do it for max 5mins or less if you feel scared. Do not exceed your personal time limit. If you do so, the subconscious mind can get activated to such an extent that it can cause problems. It can put up so many things before your conscious mind that it can crack.

There is a reason why the subconscious mind is not allowed to act freely, it has all the stored information from your past, present, future, parallel lives and it can be dangerous for people who are not ready to experience all this at once. As with any practice involving the mind it is best to slow and steady. And stop at the first sign of internal restlessness or fear. If you are not feeling comfortable, it is your mind telling you that it is not up to it, listen to it.

Siddhi – Tratak is a first step for those who wish to achieve Siddhis like Vashikaran etc. I never advocate pursuing Siddhis as they are of no use. You invest significant time to achieve them and they last only for this current life time. Also there is a high possibility of getting caught in self-ego and creating negative karma by unethical use of Siddhi on others. Do not use the powers of the subconscious mind to damage others. Negative karma created in such a way is very intense and will eventually damage you, ie hat you have done to others will be done to you to achieve karmic balance.

Hypnotic power – People who do Tratak regularly, can hypnotise others by just looking into their eyes for a few mins. So teach yourself to look at other people’s nose or mouth as you interact with them, do not stare into their eyes for too long. If you do, they will get uncomfortable, be receptive to suggestions that you make and later get hypnotised. Also you will pick up random information from their subconscious mind. In case you accidentally hypnotise others, sprinkle some water on them to get them back to normal. In my personal opinion, hypnotising others is a crime. I never do it.

Programming objects – You can ‘programme’ objects, ie infuse a desired thought pattern into an object. Use this ability only for positive actions, do not create negative karma for yourself.

  • Take a object, eg a pen, and stare at it for 5 mins. Then intend that whoever looks at this object will be under your control and blow on it. Now onwards whoever looks at this pen can be easily influenced by you. You can use this cheat code for getting through interviews etc. Or you can use this to suggest that your clients take up some spiritual practice or behave in a better way or give up addictions. This pen will retain this energy for about a month or so.
  • Later you can ‘implant’ ideas in others heads by just staring at them and mentally telling them what to you want them to do.
  • If you stare at food that others are eating it can cause them ill-health or make them better just by your thoughts. So avoid randomly staring at things /people and keep a strict control on your thoughts.
  • A positive way of using this is to programme your food and water. Stare at it for a few mins before eating it and intend that it helps you be healthy.
  • Take a object, eg a brooch. Stare at it and think of your source of faith, eg Shri Ram. Visualise him as clearly as you can and intend that his energy now resides in this brooch. Wear it on your dress and it will work as an amulet help you and protect you. Its energy will wear out in a month or so.

This trick of mildly hypnotising others for subconsciously influencing them is very common. But I have observed that the effects of such exposure stop after having a bath or even after sprinkling water on the victim. Even programmed objects lose their programming after you sprinkle water on them.

In my personal experience this simple seeming exercise can get very intense. The subconscious mind gets active very fast as the conscious mind is sort of ‘self-hypnotised’, tranquillised. It will show you scenes from your past lives, unfinished karma etc which is a generally problematic thing. Then you will be required to resolve it, ie repay back the energy to the person who is to receive or come to terms with it. In case you do all this, this exercise can give results equivalent to Chhaya sadhana. So if you do this form of Tratak, be prepared for what can happen. Ultimately you are responsible for yourself.

Energy flows out through the eyes and you are enhancing this inherent power of yours by this targeted Tratak, it is a full fledged sadhana in itself. If you do it sincerely then you can help yourself and others around you.

After the agnihotra homa, if you are looking at the Agni, is it considered Tratak?

      Hi there
      yes
but do it only for limited time, most people are not used to seeing fire/sun/etc and the eyes are weak.
do not exceed your personal time limit.
if anything untoward happens its your own responsibility.
in fact i never suggest more than 1min of this. that too build it up gradually.

Thank-you for writing this wonderful post.
I was wondering, if in some near future posts, you would like to write on parallel lives. We have heard about this phenomenon here and there, but are really not sure about how authentic are the sources, so wish if you could write on it.

    Namaste Mam,

What would be an average time for a beginner to become successful at this? I’m sure different people would progress at different times, but if you could share an approximate time for an absolute beginner who does this regularly but is disturbed with wandering thoughts, in how long can the results be seen?

Hi madam, thank you for this post. There is a book by Roald Dahl who also suggested that in the past Hindu monks would stare at the flame for long periods of time in order to improve their concentration. It is good to learn about Tratak… in the age of mental distractions, focus is imp.

Madam are you planning to write about Badhaka planets? I am unable to find any posts about the topic. Also, could you recommend a list of high energy vortex mandirs that every hindu must go? I recently went to Trimbakeshwar jyotirling and it was amazing.

    Thank you, Om Namah Shivaya.

Hi, (I earlier searhed for Badhaka hence the search came empty-just read Badhak Rashi’s article – enlightening!!)

        I have doubts –

my understanding is that Badhaka is the opposite spectrum of our personality – its what naturally attracts and repels us – we are mystified by it, we fantasize it, but we cannot become it. would you say this is a correct way to think of it?

        doubts-

        1. Which Badhak Planet is to be seen – D1 Vs D9 Vs D60?

        2. Once we know the Badhak Sign, House, Planets in Badhaka. Lord of Badhakesh and his placement, we are made aware of the challenge. Do we utilize time in overcoming this challenge or is it futile? Or is it better to focus on the strengths of our chart.

        Please guide

        D1

D9 only for rashi tulya navamsha part.

D60 will need precise birth time to the sec. no need.

depends on the question, eg profession, use the badhak of the D10.

i would prefer to focus on my strengths.

your focus will depend on your perspective of life.

Hi, Could you please help with some insights on how one can overcome subconscious triggers that result in phobias – like claustrophobia, acrophobia etc. While there is no incident in the current birth to trigger these but they do get triggered due to unknown subconscious reasons, how does one overcome those?

    Thanks in advance

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
most are a result of some tragedy in the past life
i have given an exmple of a client who was scared of insane people as he himself was tortured and driven insane in a past life. he did his practice regularly till his conscious mind felt confident about seeing the fact from the subconscious mind. then he cried and then he had to set all the damage inside himself right by his own efforts.

so if you are scared of something, do not force it.
do your practice regularly , this will give ur mind support/ confidence.
later tht inner thing causing the fear will come in front of you, your mind will have to consciously resolve it and then the fear will stop.

    Pranam Tejaswini Ma’am,
I started Tratak, just after reading few of your earlier posts, just before lockdown happened in 2020. Have been doing it regularly in the night, before sleeping.

Every time, I concentrate on the lamp flame and close my eyes.
I get to reach to a certain stage, where there are no thoughts, I am seated right before the flame and start melting…..
As my head melts & my rest of the body is remaining (similar to Ketu) I get a jolt and get transitioned to this world…as if someone is shouting my name…
My head keeps spinning and becomes heavy, right after. But it gradually settles down, as I go towards sleep. I get a sound sleep, no dreams whatsoever.

I have not been able to get past this stage over 7 months now. What could be inferred of this? Please guide me.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
      do not force the mind.
let it do things at a speed which makes sense to it

but do your gayatri mantra at least once a day. hold on to it.
any practice without mantra backing it becomes tamasic. so tratak in the night must be supported by a once a day Gayatri.

    two more doubts, please.

about one’s own rashi/moon sign. the same for asc.

    In D1, D9, D60 – They are all diff.

    Which one’s operating?

    2. mars atmakaraka, moon – amatyakaraka and mars atmakaraka, saturn amatyakarak – can they get along?

what about moon atmakaraka, sun amatyakara.

what’s the soul lesson for these individuals and what’s the common ground?

    Ma’am
    1. Is reciting Shri Sukta daily considered under mantra? Or do I have to start a another mantra to back Tratak practice?

    2. Can Yadnopaveet be done for non Brahmin boys?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
Mantra by definition is something that trains the mind.
Shri Sukta is a sukta from the Rg ved, it is definitely a mantra.

      yes.

and everyone must recite the Gayatri mantra at least once a day. it helps on so many levels.

brahmin kshatriya vaishya shudra is not by birth, its by practice, behaviour and power.
i have seen people who call themselves brahmins eat beef! drink alcohol. they do not know a single verse from the Gita, Upanishad etc. a disgrace.

Brahmanh is ‘brahma janati iti Brahmanh’

yadnopavit is the right and responsibility also of every boy born in Sanatan Dharma.
to be a part of the society, ie to get married etc, the support of Gayatri was essential. Dharma Gayatri Shikha Yajnopavit Sutra all go together.

only the Sanyasi who leaves the society could discard the Yajnopavit sutra after taking formal sanyas.

today our society has degraded beyond belief. esp after the invaders with their divide and rule and convert or die policies.

i strongly suggest that every boy above the age of 6yrs must wear the Yajnopavit sutra, recite the Gayatri sincerely and make it siddh by the age of 27yrs.
and every girl above the 6yrs age must at least recite it once a day at least.
it is pure energy. the only way to bring our future generations back to Dharma.

        Respected Madam,
My sincere gratitude and applause to you for your reply.. I was extremely materialistic especially during the period of 23-27 years of age. I regret this time when I did not do any spiritual practice.

I feel like honestly sharing this, I was into research, biomedicine. When I entered it, I convinced myself that I am doing this for the good of humanity. Many of these research projects, that yield vaccines, medicines, etc involve animal work. I worked on mice. I feel extremely guilty about having inflicted so much pain on those animals in the name of research. The field was also stressful, and I left it, completely disillusioned , and burdened with guilt.

I cannot justify what I did, because I chose this myself, many other people gave excuses that this is for the greater good. I don’t believe in this justification now because no excuses can be given for inflicting pain on those souls.

I would now like to consider myself a humble spiritual aspirant. But the guilt is extremely painful, especially now that I am humbly trying to move on this path. The pain is immense. I don’t know what to ask as a question, but my guilt pain remains, even now, almost nine years later. I feel I should apologize to each one of those animals, and if I really have the right to be “guilt-free” in this lifetime.

If there is any precious guidance that you feel you could share for me Madam, I would be really grateful.

I have read so many of your posts, and they help me immensely, also I read a recent reply on remorse, which really touched me, hence prompted me to share this… …..

        Best regards and wishes..

there is nothing like ‘sooner or later’, it will happen naturally,
your only job is to keep doing your practice. the day your mind is still, things will happen.
and it is the Mind, if you force it, it will create problems.
