Maha mrutyunjai mantra

Last Updated on January 11, 2022 by astrologerbydefault

This is a somewhat technical post. Someone requested me to write on this mantra so I took my time over it and its typical grammar. I will follow the grammatical meaning Shabd-arth and extrapolate it to the essence of the mantra Bhav-arth, all strictly within the framework of the grammar.

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे
सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनात्

The Rg 7-59 Sukta

The Maha mrutyunjai mantra is from the Rg ved 7th Mandal. It is the 12th shlok in the 59th sukta. So I opened my copy of the Rg Ved and and tried to understand what this sukta says. (If you can afford and feel like, get the 4 Ved Sanhita-s published by Yug nirman yojana vistar trust. These are translated by Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya and Shrimati Bhagvati Devi Sharma, the set costs about Rs 1400/-)

The Rishi of this sukta is Vasishtha-maitravaruni. The deities are the Marut and the Mrutyu vimochani Rudra. Chhand, ie the meter of prosody is the Anushtup.

The Marut are the energies of the breath, fierce winds, storms and war. And this word also means god, gold and beauty. Marut are the conscious energy of movement, change and vital energy/ pran. Rudra is the deity associated with the Marut as they both rule over the area between ‘the Earth and the Sun’, ie the Mooladhar and the Sahasrara chakras. They are sort of a link between the physical foundation and the heights of the conscious. Rudra is also said to be the father of the Maruts, so can be considered to be the brilliance of the pran energy. He is the reason due to which changes occur in the substance of the pran, which cause further cascading changes in animated beings. The energy which causes change can also be used to consciously direct the change and if needed also be used to stop the change from occurring. Thus Rudra and Marut together are a formidable force.

As I had mentioned in my post on Kaal here, ‘change’ is an illusion. Perception of change depends on the perspective. (eg If you stand at the center of a merry-go-round, your position does not change, even if it spins around you. But if you ride on the play-horses here, you will be swinging around till you get dizzy.) To exit this illusion of ‘apparent change’, we have to consciously use the power of Marut and Rudra. And this is precisely what we are doing in this Sukta which includes the Mahamrutyunjai mantra.

Let’s briefly examine the framework of the Rg 7-59 Sukta,

  • In the first 1-10 shlok-s, ‘we’ are invoking the Marut, fortifying them with power, requesting them to increase our strength, to destroy all our enemies, to be with us in happiness, to support us with their presence.
  • In the 11th shlok, we are inviting the Marut to come to our Yajnya with ‘Yajnyam Marut Aa Vrune’. This is the first mention of ‘Yajnya’ in this sukta.
  • So the background is that we are harnessing the power of the Marut, the vital energy and now exhorting them to provide their these energies to the Yajna, ie the evolution towards the Self. We are increasing the power of our vital energy/ pran and fortifying ourselves for the final evolution. And are preparing ourselves for taking the decisive step towards the highest evolution.
  • Then the 12th shlok of this sukta is the famous Maha mrutyunjai mantra.

The Maha mrutyunjai mantra written as per the anushtubh chhand, ie 4 lines of 8 syllables each.

Trayambakam yajamahe
Sugandhim pushtivardhanam |
Urvarukam eva bandhanat
Mrutyuh mukshiya maa amrutat ||

The form of this shlok in the Sukta does not start with the Om, but when we do sadhana with this mantra we have to begin the mantra with Om, else it creates imbalance.

fe5037370d3298d213b41d0147341139

The grammar of the words used in the Maha mrutyunjai mantra. Writing a bit on this to emphasise the beauty of the Devbhasha Samskrutam.

  • Tryambakam – neuter gender, nominative and accusative singular
  • Yajamahe – root verb Yaj यज् (1UP /AP) present tense, plural, first person
  • Sugandhim – neuter gender, nominative and accusative singular
  • Pushtivardhanam – neuter gender, nominative and accusative singular.
  • Urvarukam – neuter gender, nominative and accusative singular.
  • Iva – indeclinable
  • Bandhanat – neuter gender, ablative singular
  • Mrutyu – masculine gender, nominative singular
  • Mukshiya – root verb मुच् Much (6UP /AP) benedictive, first person singular (a very typical verb form)
  • Maa – indeclinable
  • Amrutat – neuter gender, ablative singular

The nouns are in three forms. So we have three options of subject/ object nouns.
1. neuter gender, nominative and accusative singular.
2. neuter gender, ablative singular
3. masculine gender, nominative singular

The indeclinables are Iva and Maa

Both the verbs in this mantra are from the ubhay-pad category, but their atmane-pad forms are used. Thus it is clearly indicated that the fruit of these actions directly go to whoever has acted in the first place. From these verbs, it is understood that the mantra is recited by ‘us’ or ‘I’. The doer is the first person, initially in the plural in ‘yajamahe’ and then in the singular in ‘mukshiya’.

  • So with the first verb yajamahe, ‘We’ are getting the fruits of this evolution which ‘we’ are performing in the present tense.
  • And in the second verb ‘mukshiya’, it is the benedictive mood. So ‘I’ am giving ‘myself’ this blessing that by the result of this action ‘I’ will be liberated. This is a rare form of the verb found only in Vedic Sanskrit.

Now if you just look at these words and their grammar it is obvious that the way the mantra is traditionally translated does not fit the words. I am assuming that there are two sentence structures because there are two verbs in the mantra, yajamahe and mukshiya. Also in Sanskrit, more than the order of the words in the sentence, the grammar is paramount in conveying its sense.

So let’s understand what is being said.

Om is the moorti of the Advaita. Om is the energy which is accessible in the created universes and yet is ‘nearest’ to the highest Consciousness. A sort of a bridge from the illusion of creation to the Reality of the Non-dual. Om is composed of four parts of which three are accessible in the created universe, ie the states of Jagruti, Swapna and Sushupti, represented by the akshar A, U and M. The vibrations created by the 4th part ie the Bindu help the spiritual aspirant realise his Self. At the lowest level of consciousness you are aware only in the Awake-Jagrut state. As your consciousness expands you become aware of your Dream-Swapna and later Deep-sleep Sushupti states. And as you progress even more, you are able to dissolve these three states related to the creation into the 4th part of Om, the Bindu. Once this happens you are Enlightened, ie you have achieved Moksh, you experience yourself as the Non-dual Advaita. Whenever you do any mantra jaap you must start with Om, this channelises the power of the mantra in a safe and conducive way for you.

The trayambakam are the three states which are seen or perceived. ie the Jagruti, Swapna and Sushupti, thus the trayambakam are often commonly considered to be the ‘three eyes’. These trayambakam are the fluid energies which generate these three different types of experiences. As one experiences does one exist, so we can say that these three, Jagruti, Swapna and Sushupti, are the three perceived states of existence. Only when these three states of existence are ‘sacrificed’ does the fire of internal Self become visible. These three states are to be merged into the Light of the Self or ‘sacrificed’ in the fire of Awareness, which in this mantra ‘we’ will be doing.

In this sentence the doer is not specifically mentioned, ie there is no subject noun but as the verb ‘yajamahe’ is in first person plural, the subject is implied as ‘We’. The mantra describes a dynamic situation where these three states of perception are made to continually evolve, ie their energy levels being increased by ‘our’ conscious efforts. Here the doers are in plural. The three fold states of lower levels of consciousness ie Jagruti, Swapna and Sushupti avastha are continuously evolving by the action of multiple doers. Ie the doers of this act are still perceiving themselves as the multiple and are working with multiple states of existence, duality is perceived to exist.

Sugandhim is used as an adjective of Tryambakam. These three states, Jagruti, Swapna and Sushupti bear only a very small quantity of the Highest Consciousness. These three states are exactly ‘perfumed’ with the tiniest part of the most Excellent awareness. These three contain the highest virtue of the Eternal Beautiful, but just a hint of it, as it should be. These are the emanations of the Advaita and at their essence are also the Advaita. Something like a perfume exuded by a flower, the three states of existence are exuded by the Eternal. Just as the smell of a flower is at once both the flower yet at the same time apparently separate from it.

Pushtivardhanam is used an adjective of Tryambakam. These three states are continually being nourished and their levels of animation are being promoted by their link to the Eternal. They are thriving, developing, increasing their levels of awareness only due to this connect to the Highest. They are continually expanding, enlarging, extending, upgrading themselves. They are completing themselves by their link to the Awareness. All this is happening because ‘we’ are evolving the Tryambakam to begin with.

Finally Urvarukam is used as an adjective of Tryambakam but with the use of the indeclinable ‘Eva’ it has a subtly different meaning. This word causes a lot of confusion as it commonly means a cucumber or a melon. But vegetables have no place in a mantra focussed on the highest Consciousness. Broadly Urvaruk उर्वारुक can be understood as the result when the catalytic energy is acting on the foundation. And in Sanatan Dharma whenever we talk of a catalytic energy we mean the eternal consciousness. In this mantra, Urvaruk is the great fire of consciousness which burns within the depths. The blazing Sun. The bountiful extensive great ocean of consciousness.

When we, by our efforts, evolve the three states of perception, we realise that these are mere emanations rooted in the Bindu ie the 4th state of Om, ie the Eternal Advaita. They are simply ‘fragrances’ of the Non-Dual flower. Thus we merge ourselves into the Non-dual.

The first part of the mantra deals with how the three states of perception are consciously made to evolve and gain more and more of the essence of the Eternal, to come very very close to the Eternal.

So by ‘our’ efforts we are bringing the Tryambakam almost to the level of the Urvarukam. But then what comes after this stage? This is in the second sentence in this mantra.

9be62320f8dae586b5b3a3835de35684

Now the second part, ‘Bandhanat Mrutyuh mukshiya maa amrutat.’

Bandhanat, means ‘separated from the bindings’. We all believe that we are bound to our existence through different attributes, the Gun – Satva, Raja, Tama, Avastha – Jagrut, Swapna, Sushupti or even identities like Rajan, Priya, husband, wife, mother, father, child, teacher, student, the karmic ties which bind us. Our belief in these ties is so strong that we are unable to conceive our Eternal nature, this is also the cause of existential sorrow. Thus we take on lives after lives, searching for the true Happiness, trying to find the Self.

Mrutyuh is a noun in the masculine nominative singular form. There are several meanings for Mrutyu. Death or the deity of Death, ie Yam are the usual ones. But Mrutyu also means the secret of existence, ie the Para-Brahma. And also Maya, Vishnu, Kali, Kama-dev, samsara and the hunger ie desire. Interestingly, relevant to our mantra, Mrutyu essentially is ‘the evolution which is rapidly completed’.

In the first part we saw that the 3 states are still evolving continually by the action of multiple doers.
In the second part, the verb ‘mukshiya’ is the benedictive singular first person. The plural doer has now become singular. With the evolution of the three states, the non-duality has started asserting itself.

So this “Bandhanat Mrutyuh mukshiya maa amrutat” will mean the following,

The ‘evolution which is rapidly completed’ will now most assuredly be separate from all bindings. This secret of existence will be released from all bondages. The concept of desire (which causes more ties) will be unyoked from all concepts of ties. The idea of Maya and Creation will be cast aside. Satva-gun will be discharged (Satva gun is the last one to dissolve in this involution process) etc. ie, the singular doer is now assuring himself that the direction of the evolution will most assuredly take him to himself. This is an intention expressed in the positive sense. ie release from bindings.

At this stage the doer ‘I’ realise that I am non-dual, there is no one but me and I have no attributes, I am almost there, so I use my intention to consciously ‘bless’ myself. Only I can bless myself, as there is no one else but me. I bless my own Self with this benediction. ie, ultimately everyone has to intend his own evolution. To evolve spiritually or to remain stuck in the ties is a decision that everyone makes for himself. If you want to play the Game some more or if you want to realise the Self, this is your own choice your own intention. You are always blessing your own self in this sense.

This ‘rapid evolution’ will most definitely not be separated from immortality. It will not be cast away from the Light. It will not be abandoned by the Eternal. ie, singular doer is now assuring himself using the negative clause too. That he will never be separate from the Advaita. He will always remain conscious of his Eternal Light and aware of his Non-dual nature.

It is interesting that the mantra reinforces the blessing using the positive ‘Bandhanat Mrutyu’ and negative intention “Maa Amrutat’ both. Somehow these two intentions are balanced by the benediction ‘Mukshiya’ that is placed between them. It makes the structure of the mantra very elegant.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

It is significant that the deity, conscious and aware intelligence linked to this mantra is the ‘Mrutyu vimochani Rudra’. Rudra means the vibration, change or brilliance. Vimochani means the act of release, liberation, casting away. Mrutyu has several meanings as above. Try to think on what the ‘Mrutyu vimochani Rudra’ really implies.

This mantra is all about how the energies of the Marut-s and the Mrutyu vimochani Rudra are being utilised by the spiritual aspirants to evolve the limited consciousness which thinks it to be separate from the Eternal to reach the highest pinnacle of Self awareness, the Advaita.

There are absolutely nil vegetables in this mantra and we are not worshiping any god nor propitiating any deity with this mantra. There are no deities in Sanatan Dharma, we Hindus adore pure consciousness, we adore our own form, the highest Conscious Intelligence. I create my Universe for the Game I play, for this I first create a mind, this now runs in the ten directions creating further elaborate illusions for my Game. When I am done playing, I dissolve the Game. This requires that I train the mind, stop it from running in the ten different directions and focus it on the one single Bindu that really Is. As I dissolve the mind, I see Myself.

This post is a very rudimentary way of understanding this mantra. If you want to really experience it, do its Jaap, ie 108 times mental repeats at least once a week. Or do its Homa. Or listen to its Ghana-path, its spiralling energies looping in your mind. This Maha mrutyunjai mantra is very useful for all issues in life, if you train your mind with its energy, it will act as an all-round remedy for all your problems.

The Ghana path by Uma Mohan, with its mesmerising spiralling energy.

Namaste Ma’am. Am posting this comment of mine in the comments section of this unrelated article. It pertains to your 2nd latest article on Sade Sati, where I could not post it ://
It was another informative article on Lord Saturn from you. Please keep up the good work :)_/\_

A simple doubt I had- could Shani Deva’s 2.5 years transit (Small Panoti) be divided into 3 phases like Sade Sati, of 8-9 months each? I would urge you to write a separate article on Dhaiya and address this query of mine in detail there. Hoping you would consider. Regards!

      Hi there
its not divided like that as he is going to stay in only one sign.
but you can use the movement of Saturn in the nakshtra of that sign to get more information on how he will work. he stays in one nakshatra for about 12-13 months.
if you know how to interpret the ashtakvarga, you can use the kakshya of the prastara ashtakvarga of saturn and get more information.
or if you are more confident with analysing the navamsha, you can use the movemnt of saturn thru the 9 navamsha of the sign to gain insights on how he will behave in each.

        Hi there
After this comment again there will b people up in arms.

But i have seen tht most people do not know how to pronounce Sanskrit words.
Esp in northern parts of India, they r unable to pronounce the syllables. व क्ष ळ ऋ ज्ञ ष Also the last akshar in the gutteral and palatal group. Plus with the repeated invasions their original brahmins are all lost.

Thts why i wrote tht section on the grammar fr people who r used to hearing wrongly recited mantras by commercial artists.
Its the ablative singular as bandhanat.
If in doubt reg mantra, find the ghanapaath recited by a competent brahmin. Thts the authoritative version.

Have u studied Sanskrit as a language ever?
If so go thru the declension of bandhan.
There is no word ‘bandhanan’ in grammar. It does not have a meaning.

Then if u want to study more.
The way words are pronounced in vedic and classical Sanskrit is different but there r some common rules fr ease of speaking.
Eg The ganapati atharvashirsha is a perfect example as we all learn it in our childhood.
        tvameva pratyaksham tatvamasi…
        Is pronounced as
        Tvameva pratyakshanntatvamasi.
The starting syllable of the nxt word decides how the last halant syllable of the previous word is to b pronounced.
raktam lambodaram … is pronounced as
        Raktallambodaram.
Bhaktanukampinam devam jagat… is pronounced as
        Bhaktanukampinandevannjagat…
There are very clear rules on this. If u r interested u can learn more.

    Thanks ma’am, interesting post.

The temple where markandeya was saved by Shiva is only 5 kms from my home.

We had the maha mrityunjaya homam done at home for my son as advised by the astrologer. It was advised to do it before his 13th birthday also my son should be present and inhale the fumes. The namboothiri (poojari) asked us also to chant the mantra till the end of the homam. Thanks to the homam, he survived beyond his 13th birthday. He’s 19 now.

It’s really nice to know the esoteric aspect of each ritual that is practiced by us handed down by seers.

Ma’am there’s a new found theory doing the rounds that any planet in 12 th house is very good in today’s time to travel abroad and work abroad ( consequently earn more money).I am not concerned with the money factor earned but what I was thinking is…… Since traditionally 12 th house also represented isolation ,far away place, hospital, prison, expense ,loneliness…
Those significations won’t just go away by a change of place…
Previously travel to another country meant months on a ship.no phone no internet meant no contact with family for years unless you undertook another ardous ship journey. Even travel within country took weeks.
Very few people of your culture abroad meant isolation.
Now every 5 th person abroad is indian.theres local communities in most places, video calling and travel home is just a flight away ( in non covid times).
So I don’t think the traditional themes of 12 th house just disappear by going far away from home..( in today’s time and age) . Even within India no longer relatives or families spend time together unless there’s a marriage and you can’t miss out on an instagram opportunity.

In fact I have heard travel abroad being suggested as a remedy for 12 th house.
If 12 th is of loss and isolation then it will manifest to whatever extent depending on strength of chart irrespective of place of residence.
    Manner of manifestation might change.
Am I thinking correctly ?.kindly guide maam

      Hi there
the superficial material results will have to be seen in context of age of the person, his situation in life, the home culture etc. so naturally the material results will change with the age we live in.

but the core of the reading, ie the energy and the spiritual results do not change.

any planet in the 12th house is a loss of the energy that you could have received from tht planet and the houses he controls. it always damages the personality in subtle ways. its the house of Loss of the Vital. so a planet there is going to increase this loss, give it a purpose, link up other houses in the chart with it.

these people who left Bharat left coz they had karma in these other nations.
they are after material things, and for money they have sacrificed their spiritual growth.
to be born in Bharat requires significant purvapunya. and to leave it is very unfortunate.
they are now rootless, they have forgotten their ancestral deities, village deities, culture, traditions all lost, they will stop doing the 16 complusory Sanskars and thus stop following Sanatan Dharma.
their offspring will also not follow sanatan dharma and its all going to affect their descendants. their lines will die out.
if you can do a study of these rootless people do it, it will be an excellent subject.

another thing, if the yogkarak is in the 12th house, then this person will be an ascetic at heart. he can become a sanyasi or live in the world but apart. Ultimately depending on the power of the rest of the chart, give up his ego and progress very far on his spiritual journey.

travelling abroad can be a way to reduce karma if you do it with that sort awareness.
me and my husband have significant planets in the 12th house. we both had to leave our home state but we landed up in the Himalay! thts the auspicious nature of the planet in the 12th.
and we travel a lot abroad, mostly separately. and repay the karma pending in that land.
the land very clearly tells what it wants.
eg once i had to specially take a bottle of Ganga-jal all the way from Haridwar and put it in a very specific location in Moscow for a very specific purpose.

        Thanks Mam.

Also wanted to ask you if there is anything you would like to tell us about curses…Are curses applicable in the kali Yuga?

Does the impact of a curse change if the doer of a wrong action did the wrong action accidently/purposefully.

Childless also because of medical reasons but that could have maybe again maybe helped her but she could take medical intervention since she was unable to handle the pain she was going through.

if this is you then worship your ancestral gods and ensure that the tarpan for the deceased ancestors is done regularly.
request their forgiveness, also forgive your own self.

But the way this comment expresses a disdain for people who have had to leave their motherland actually left a bad taste for me. People have different life situations ( i know myself ) and to paint everyone with a broad brush is unfair to them.

I very humbly would like to suggest if you feel that somewhere its the ego that is causing you to judge people who are settled far from their native place? Thank You. God bless.

        Hi there
I myself do not live in my own home state. but I live in the Himalay who provides me unlimited energy and protection in his Kshetra. But still I have to do the pujas that are necessary for repaying the debt owed to my family gods, village gods, ancestors etc. As I am married, these are the gods of my family after marriage.
I, my husband and son have a very significant planet in the 12th house, this in my own immediate family. So I observe dispassionately and try to trace how the patterns move with time.

My school and college friends, of these, about 200 individuals, about 75% have migrated permanently to other nations. I have their charts in my collection. Several of these contact me when they have problems, which is very often. as i know them from my childhood, i listen to them. Their problems are all caused by this 12th house/ planet which now dominates their life.
By shifting to another nation permanently they have allowed this 12th planet/house to majorly impact their lives. For these people, whether they like it or not, the 12th is the major player in life. the rest of the chart has to be seen in this perspective. And its underlying theme is always the loss of the physical, manifested, material with its accompanying pain and trauma.
Because the 12th is the sub-conscious they cannot understand the nature of the problem they are in. It lies below the range of their conscious understanding. Mostly linked to spirits and entities which include past ancestors who are demanding their due. Nightmares, lack of rest, isolation, being unwanted on the energy levels by the land where they are living etc is all very much there for these people. Even if they do not show it on their faces, their charts speak. You cannot hide anything from a competent jyotishi.
And because they are not in Bharat they cannot solve their problems immediately either. Then they are like, ‘we will come to India after 2yrs then do this solution activity’. This makes the problems go even deeper into their astral body.
If you are a follower of Sanatan dharma and have exited Bharat to settle permanently outside, then there are problems which you will face which will make following Dharma difficult. The quality of the land in these other nations at present is not suitable for several things which are necessary for us as per Sanatan Dharma.
I do not wish to write more on this as there are several people who will misunderstand or go into depression or think that I have written this out of ‘my self ego’.

Frankly I do not see going out of Bharat on a permanent basis as a positive thing in any sense whatsoever. It causes harm. The 12th house is very sensitive, anything connected here, will affect your immediate next life too.
If you do not agree to what I have said, it is your wish, your outlook, nothing to do with me.
But do start a study collection, choose charts from 2nd or 3rd generation Hindus who have settled out of Bharat. Analyse for yourself and come to your own conclusions.

And I am not judging anyone.
        How can I?
when I see my own past lives, seeing all that I have done, good bad indifferent throughout a series of these oh so many lives.
Then the past lives of the clients peeping from their auras. and some of them are quite horrific by today’s standards.
one client was a prostitute in some life and today there are some problems which were caused by this past. Today my job is to help him come out of that past without telling him what was the trigger event.
one client was killed and bound as a pretatma by a person who is his mother in this life, has several issues stemming from this one event so many lives ago.
Another was insane for a few lives, today has psychic abilities beyond his control which cause him problems.
Another was a butcher who killed cows, has nightmares. a beggar who roamed around. someone who was murdered and so many more.
All these are regular people today who cannot be told the source of their problems in clear words. They will fight the thought of being in such traumatic circumstances. And I am supposed to counsel them out of their trauma. I do it by making them use the power of their own 9th house to trigger things favourable for them.
I am a mere facilitator. No more.

Where does the question of judging them even arise? and what parameter what do i judge them against?

i have a task and I have to complete it, that is all.
This blog is too in that same spirit. Its a job which I have to endure and finish. It neither gives me pain nor pleasure to write.

I never judge, as I see facts, trends and patterns in everything.
And an astrologer cannot ever judge. If I start judging people then I cannot fulfil my karma. Its very important to me that I complete whatever I am required to do.
And most critically, if I judge someone I will be linked to that person’s karma! Can you comprehend the horror that this statement is?

Someone asked me a question, as a student.
If it were a client I would have responded differently. (But there are no clients in my life now, so I am not required to counsel anyone.)

How about someone with an empty 12th house in D1 and rahu (with mars) in 12th house of D9? Would that qualify for isolation /foreign land settlement? Am checking since this person lives outside of Bharat.. (also there maybe other combinations to fulfill this, not sure)

        Many thanks🙏

        Hi there
yes the D9 has its effect.
also check the birth chart 12th house lord and his association, eg if he is with the 4th house/lord?
also if there are any patterns in the D9 reg this birth 12th lord/sign.
also the dasha/transit when this person left for abroad.

Yes, 12th lord aspects 4th house in d1. This 12th lord takes Nidhan amsha in d9 along with moon (d9 1st house). And yes, this person left for abroad during the dasha period of the 12th lord.

Many thanks for the reply 🙏

Thanks for this ! And thank you for calling a spade a spade , having lived abroad for three years in one of the best countries in Europe this resonates with me completely. The spiritual consciousness in mleecha land has died out completely. It’s not fertile for spiritual growth at all. It’s at best a short term game to gain some financial cover. Settling out long term is a very bad idea as the higher vibrational frequency doesn’t exist due to so much cow killing and general mleecha vibrations in those lands. It would be so nice if you can do a post around this. Understand that this will be tough for some people but atleast they should clearly understand the trade offs of the choices that they make !

Thank you mam.i am.not sure if I have explained myself clearly..the inlaws are very much alive and the person in distress is unablen to forgive them and move on cause they had questioned and tarnished her entire character and her complete childhood since she had no parents to defend.
In such a case she is unable to go further and conceive since she also has a problem called vaginismus and this has added more to the pain and depression..in such cases do a adopted girl give her relief and give her peace since the adopted girl is not technically the actual generation of her in laws..

She is also worried that her own pain and curses will affect her inlaws generations and also maybe they can snatch off the child from her

How does she ever go on and push this life with no parents, no kids , no inlaws..

She still lives with her husband though null and void in the marriage and just pushing it.
        Your advises greatly required mam.

i have written about adoption here.
        https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2019/01/11/assisted-reproductive-technology-and-adoptions/

a child adopted into the family with pure intention becomes a part of the family in every way.
the Sanskar are always more important than the DNA. small child is better, ie less than 1yr old as then max sanskars can be performed in time.
so if this person wants to adopt she should with a pure intention, for the child to give true joy to the heart.

and ask her to consult her regular astrologer for detailed readings.

I just wanted to share something. I was at the Shiva Temple in Kuai, Hawaii in 2018 and there was a big basket with label free to all and I picked up a CD – the only thing left in the basket which said Sri Mrutyunjaya mantra for healing and I have started listening to it in the car. Its 60 minutes non stop mantra. I didn’t understand what it was back then. It scared me in the beginning but now I chant along while driving. I think God knew I needed it.

    Thank you

Loved the research behind the article ma’am. I checked the index I feel you have written less about nakshatra’s (maybe you plan to do so later). I was trying to get a translation of karma vipak samhita but could not find to understand karma and dispositor. Do plan to share your insights on these if possible

    Coming to my query,

    1. I have rahu (jupiter dispositor) at 0 degree in scorpio fourth house. Some say its weak to affect but I read that malefic even at starting degrees are powerful. Is it true?

I also realized that all my life up till now I have been brought to live close by major water bodies (Narmada, Arabian sea, Ganga) due to home (dad in govt job) which sort of confirms the moveable aspect and water sign (they say Scorpio is an extremely karmic sign). My fourth house is the strongest bhav (11.6) shadbala but I am still trying to understand karma here.

I am living in the holy city of Varanasi where Shiv Ji is of utmost importance. As soon as I landed here, ketu mahadasha and karmic lessons began but somehow I feel protected yet detached from him. Whenever I visit him or temples he just never listens or grants my wish in fact he took away a lot of love/peace from life whenever I trusted and prayed but I never stop visiting him once I am mentally okay. I feel he hasn’t blessed me but I am still living in his city, safely. It’s confusing.

What can be the reason for this weird energy/ no connection?

    2. I started understanding basic astrology to find the repeating events in my life. Slowly your articles elevated the interest and made it simpler but it’s a difficult subject and is purely intuitive and observational. There are not many pure soul astrologers anymore. It’s all commercial. One is lucky if he finds a real catalyst but I guess that happens only if god wants you to know few things through that medium. I wish, I was. You are doing a good deed by sharing years of wisdom to make others self-reliant.

Since the time I have read 3-4 charts of my family, I am feeling extreme heaviness in my head and fatigue. My health is also affected. I am not able to focus on work or dhyan. It’s making me exhuasted. Has it affected me karmically? negative energy or I am just overthinking and it might be a coincidence.

I did start doing shri sukta, mahalakshmi ashtkam and ganpati ji is my favorite (aarti) to feel calm and do dhyan. My regular astrologer asked me to donate on every Saturday which I feel is selfish. You donate because you want or need blessings or want to please a planet deity. I do it when I see misery monthly out of no expectation, just to help others. Is that wrong?

Can you please help with something that can bring peace, prosperity? I do not know my kul or ishta devta.

      Hi there
writing on 27 nakshatra, will mean 27 posts, which i cannot do as of now, time is always a constraint.
but i have written about the nakshatra whenever the topic comes up, eg when writing on retrograde planets or current transits, i do make it a point to add some notes on the concerned nakshatra.

kashi is one of the purest places i have seen. its just so brilliantly sparklingly beautiful. pure dense energy. living there is a sadhana in itself. do not over think, put your faith in him. going to kashi or to the temple or living there is possible only by the Bhagwan’s wish. you are in his hands

if you are not comfortable seeing charts do not do it anymore. as it is seeing charts is a part of karma, if you have no requirement to do it, why get into it?
but yes, analyse your own self using jyotish, it will be helpful

      1. Niha Avatar
        Niha

Thank You. I guess this over-learning of Jyotish has made me depressed. Knowing about the future and your limitations is saddening. I feel my parents are right when they say it’s better not to know the future. God has kept it a secret, away for a reason. (we follow Arya samaj).

Once you get to know ‘ Oh your marriage life will be an act of convenience, maaya of money will be limited etc… you feel like why to even put effort. Nothing seems to be in your hand. This is going to be life-long suffering + you lose motivation of doing dhyan or focus on anything that might have been a childhood dream of yours. I believe after my instance not everyone can bear or should know things. It’s heavy and maybe that’s why the right astrologer keeps few karmas and things to him/ herself to keep you going….motivated to live life.

for ex. my tenth house of career and status has high AV (35) but eleventh (23) falls way below average. It means I will keep slogging my entire life, might get known but money and satisfaction will never be there.

————-Oh sorry, I forgot this. it was crucial as you know and are a lot into spiritual practice——- Please help if you know and can

I have moon in the 12th house (mooltrikon) but it’s weak compared to the sun. In a way, as per your article on Leo ascendant, malefic in dushtana is good. But hear this out

Since childhood, for as long as I can remember I have fear of deep waters. It scares the hell out of me. I feel I will drown or die but life has always made me stay close to water bodies. Since, 12th house shows your past life and karma….. I am scared. I know you don’t want to attract bad karma but can you answer yes or no ( is this a significant sign in my karma)?

I keep getting snakes in my dreams (open and close) of different colour and nothing scares me more than them all my life. All of reptiles, water is so strong in karmic houses if you see above

Since Snakes shiv ji kashi all this has soe connection is there a ritual that i didn’t do or will make it better? Maybe I am not able to understand

      2. astrologerbydefault Avatar

        Hi there
why should be be saddening? jyotish is enabling.
if you know your strengths and weaknesses you are more capable fo facing whatever comes your way.
eg if i know that i cannot swim i will take special care to never jump into a river.

        https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2018/09/26/fatalistic-astrology/

follow whatever philosophy you feel drawn to.
freedom of choice always exists and the law of karma. this is the essential freedom that Sanatan Dharma allows.
no religion allows this basic freedom.

also check the 10th 11th house from your birth moon and refer to the D9 also. fr Q reg gains.

for snakes – check the position of Rahu ketu. do some daan for them in their temple if you can afford.
and make it a point to put water over a shivlingam regularly, esp when you get these dreams. this is the easiest remedy, will not cost anything. but do it will full faith.
if you feel that your past life energy related to water is too strong for you to handle, make a few chapatis with your own hands, put a lump of jaggery in them and feed them with your own hands to a desi cow, there are several such sitting in the roads in kashi. if you cannot make chapatis then make a dough of wheat flour, put jaggery lumps in it and feed it.
and if you see a desi cow in your way, touch its hump and ask for its blessings
        it will be resolved

Will 10th , 11th from moon show physical gains? You mentioned in some article that decide what is more powerful (sun/ moon/ lagna lord) and see from it. I mentioned my moon is very weak (shadabala of 316, avastha is young) whereas sun being lagna lord (shadbala 563, mrit avastha) in 10th house.

Drik panchang – lahiri shows ketu in 9th house but when i use true lahiri of j.hora it shifts to 10th house closely conjunct with sun at 0 degree. So I am always confused if my lagna lord, luck, moon in dusthana nothing is safe/ non-afflicted.

They say its bad luck but I have only seen it to be tough/ challenging with respect to material results – I chose a different stream altogether to break a league, I work harder than I get paid but I totally believe in my line of study. It’s just not the right time maybe for the Bharat. Lesser opportunities. My dad is fine, nothing absurd god bless mars in 9th house is strongest. So I don’t know about bad things of ketu. Yes I never ger things in one go. Break, gap, failures are common but so far I have strived back out of no choice.

So in this case from where should I see in D-1 and D-9? Will hora reflect it more clearly? Like for my reading, the point of study for any chart should be with respect to what?

Also ma’am if someone has very strong 12th and 11th house, does it mean they might lose the more they earn? Or the more the liquid gains, more sudden loss/ expense etc ? Basically dushtana AV should be more than 30 or less than average for less harm?

      4. astrologerbydefault Avatar

        Hi there
you can use the transits proactively if you are aware of your birth moon and his chart. and there will be some favourable transits in life.
if you are getting errors with the software, calculate it manually.
ketu conjunct sun can give extraordinary professional success at the right dasha/transit.
i have written on ketu conjunct planets
        also on the 9th house
see what matches your situation in life.
ketu is the strongest graha in the chart, if you can use him.
first get clear about your birth chart positions before getting into the DC.

Yet another brilliant article, thankyou for that since it is given to me the exact time I wanted it.But in one of the replies you said that for all mantrajapa should be done on an asan…is it applicable to silent japa also.since I was doing japa silently in a bus/train the result was entirely different when I do it in the poojaroom. And if we had something for breakfast is it ok to do the concentaration dhyan in train or bus as you said in some of ur blogs…Thankyou once again..but need to come again for complete understanding🙏

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
ideally all sadhana has to be done on the asan. the asan ‘holds’ your practice.
but in today’s world no one has the time to do so, and its becomes an excuse to avoid doing the jaap etc.
something is always better than nothing. so listen to your shri sukta, other stotras on your way to office or do your mental soham in the bus, just do something rather than letting your mind run away with energy-draining thoughts .
later as this mantra/sukta etc gains strength. the universe will bend things around you so that you are able to your own sadhana, ie the Universe will manage things, ie make you get a easier job, or something, that you will get the time to sit on a asan.
just start somewhere, rest all the mantra will manage.

In your view is this factual? Would love to get your advice.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
there are beej mantras for everything
you can add other beej mantra to the basic gayatri too, there is a full gayatri tantra on this.

when i do homa using the Mahamrutyunjai mantra i use typical beej mantras. and a very different way of reciting it.
to use them you need to have a clear understanding of what the beej mantra is all about. or if a competent guru has told you to. if you are sure about what you are doing, its ur wish.

      https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2019/01/10/beej-mantras/

but as the most powerful beej mantra is the pranav mantra itself, OM, so best use this in its pure form. its the gentlest safest and simplest way.

pure om is more powerful than ‘om haung jung’

    Hi,

I just wanted to add to your comments and share my personal experience regarding being outside of India. Maybe folks who were born in India and moved abroad don’t realize this as perhaps they have more of a foundation being raised in India- so just wanted to share my perspective.

I was born and raised in the US and it is absolutely true that living here makes following dharma very difficult.

    1) Just practically speaking- there is so so much information and knowledge that I (and all of us american born Indians) miss out on simply by not being able to read and write hindi/sanskrit. So many books that we cannot read that will never be translated properly in English. Sure our parents can pass down some knowledge but where do you go when you need more? It feels like dead end unless you go through the process of learning our native languages. I am trying to learn sanskrit now but it is not easy. And I can speak hindi so there is some foundation for me. Most of my indian friends cant even speak/barely understand hindi.

    2) As Tejaswini ji stated, it is very difficult to have remedies done here. I have posted comments here before about my frustration that my chart has never been read properly. Partly because competent jyotishis here are very difficult to find. Most folks here will just go to the temple and have the punditji look at the charts, which does not always give for a very accurate reading. So forget about the solution, 80% of the time you dont even know what the problem is.

So sure, people may come here for one reason or another ( for my parents, it was school) and there are great opportunities here that we perhaps would not have had india. But thats all material. In terms of spiritual progress, I have hit a wall and know that unless i make the effort and do it myself, it wont happen. I assume this is true for anyone else living here who is aware enough. We’re essentially on our own.

    Namaste Tejaswiniji,

Thanks a lot for such a beautifully written post on ‘Maha Mrutyunjai mantra’, so perfectly explained 👌🏻🙏🏻♥️

Also love the answers you give in response to queries. What you mentioned about people settled abroad is very, very true. Few of my relatives settled abroad decades ago and are doing well financially there. But I can see that they don’t observe our festivals and rituals there, their kids have no idea about our rituals/ festivals or know the importance of it. They have never performed any Tarpan for deceased relatives. After one of my relatives (settled abroad) died over a year ago, they could not find a good priest who could do the rituals correctly- the Nakshatra of the day of death was calculated wrongly – and my relatives were not aware of this serious mistake – till we talked about it. No ravens or crows came to partake of the rice as they are not found abroad. Due to Covid they cannot come to our country to immerse the ashes in the sacred rivers. People may be settling abroad for various reasons but this can have so many repercussions for them. Truly Bharat is a blessed country! ♥️

    Lots of love and gratitude

It has been a wonderful journey the last few days since I stumbled upon a real gem in the form of your blog. My compliments and wishes to you.

I have few questions. Please do shed light if you feel it qualifies to add more insights.

    1. If Pronunciation of beej mantras ending with “am” need to be uttered as “aung” , does the same apply for “Om” as well ?

    2. Saying a mantra loudly versus whispering versus uttering mentally, is there any difference ?

    3. Could you please write about Lalita sahasranamamam and panchamukhi hanuman stotra? I really enjoyed this article about your insights on Mahamrityunjanaya stotram.

Thanks , looking forward to many more amazing posts from you.

      Hi there
Om is more than a beej mantra, thts why its called the pranav mantra. its the moorti of the eternal as we visualise it from our worlds.
there are several ways of using it actively. but it would be best if your Guru guides you on this.

at max you can do this, recite om, close the lips with the mm, but then push with the tongue at the palate of the mouth.

Lalita sahastranama would be too long, may not be possible
and i have written about Hanuman in this post

    Dear Tejaswini, Hari Om!

Read the posts and replies about Hindu Diaspora and wanted to share my thoughts, given that I am 3rd generation diaspora. I agree with you that there is difficulty in living abroad. But it is possible to live with the grace of Mother India far away. It depends on how we retain our relationship to Bharat and Sanatana Dharma.

My grandfather travelled out of India and settled abroad. He refused to give up his Indian passport and wore Khadi dhoti and kurta till he died. We were all trained to be reverential towards India as our Motherland. Mum and dad also lived their lives around the visits to India. All major decisions and life events were around Tirupati Lord Venkateshwara.

As for me, my life revolves around Mother Ganga, Kailash, Badrinath, Vrindavan…even oceans away. Distance does not matter to their grace. I remember when my father passed away, I was grieving and was praying to Ganga Maiyya alot. The next day, my ipad in my room started playing by itself….Ganga Stotram simply started playing while I was sitting in the living room. I also discovered later that the day that my father’s ashes were dispersed into the sea was Ganga Jayanti. That’s how blessed I felt. She is my Mother and she came here. It rains here, every time it’s Ganga Jayanti, Ganga Dussehra.

There are so many experiences like this. People living in India are sometimes unappreciative of the value of Bharat as punya kshetra. But the kshetra transcends the boundaries of geography to those who seek it.

Salutations to Mother India. She lives in my DNA. Warm regards to all….🙏

The underlying conflict of living in a land not suitable always remains in some way or the other.
Its an internal feeling hits on the subconscious and aura levels.
If ur grandad wore dhoti kurta am sure he would have faced discrimination in the land he settled in.
Its appreciable tht yr family has retained the values. This is rare.
99% of those who leave Bharat also leave their connect to the Dharma.

Hello Tejaswini Ji – I debated a lot if I should ask any more doubts and came to the conclusion that I would be leaving an incomplete conversation if I dont. I want to say that I have utmost respect for you. You are the most knowledgable person I know, and your blog has changed my life. It has given me something that I was missing – the bent towards adhyatm, practice of meditation and the knowledge of Sanatam Dharm. Pls consider my questions to be coming from a toddler who does not know much and is just starting to explore. I realize that I am at that stage.

My thought is that all men are created equal. Thats a fundamental belief for me. When the comment mentioned – “to be born in Bharat requires significant purvapunya. and to leave it is very unfortunate.”, it went against my belief of all ppl being equal regardless of where they might be born, or if they have moved out of Bharat. It is my own personal situation as I was born in India, lived there most of my life and I have moved out. Am I unfortunate? I dont know the answer myself and I suspect I never will.

Does it mean that people born out of Bharat are in some ways having lesser punya. If one is a believer that Brahman is one with all things, then not only are all people equal, but all living beings are equal in essence.

I really want to understand this. I hope I am not coming across as argumentative, thats not my intention. I put a lot of weightage on your thoughts and opinions… and the thought that I am causing problems in my current life, my next life as well as causing problems for my descendants is very troubling to me.
Very humbly, I request you to share some thoughts..and guidance please. Thank you

      Hi there
Everyone is essentially the same, non-dual Advaita. There is no difference at this level. This is the Param-atma. This is the highest level of self-realization or Moksh. If you are at this level and have experienced your Self, then all this discussion has no relevance at all.

But we are not at this level. when it comes to individual souls, people who you see around you, all those who have not yet realised Moksh. We are all the jivatma, we are labouring under the illusion of duality. Here we all are not ‘equal’. The law of karma is in operation so the jivatma cannot and are not equal. The jiv-atma carries a burden of karma which is different for everyone.
If all jiv-atma were ‘equal’ then there would be no Game/ Lila possible as all would be Realised Jivan-mukt.

      https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2020/02/19/evolution-of-the-soul-and-the-horoscope/

And yes, being born in Bharat and as a follower of Sanatan Dharma requires Purva-punya. even to visit this land with the proper intention requires punya. The quality of this land is very very different and for so many reasons. Most important is our temples which are active for thousands of years, thousands! No other land has the pure energy that exists in Bharat.
Leaving this land forever is a Loss on so many levels.
earlier i suppose people would do some remedy to avoid this loss.

Ultimately everyone should follow their own conscience.
If you feel that what I am saying is incorrect, you are free to not believe in it. Or believe in whatever appeals to you.
but if this topic is of interest to you, do your own study, thts why I said collect your own sample charts.

I have one more set of charts in my study. My dad’s school friends, these are people settled abroad 50+ yrs ago and have their children and grandchildren there. These people have been in touch with my dad and keep asking him for help etc. 99% of these charts are disconnected from their roots.
the 2nd 3rd generation does not identify themselves as Hindus or followers of Sanatan Dharma.
and the original generation who left Bharat is now aged and dying. At this stage there are regrets.

If you have had to move out, its because of the karmic burden you have chosen for yourself. Evaluate your 12th house and try to understand how it works in your life. Try to keep your connect with your Dharma consciously. And also teach your children also if you can.

Thank you Tejaswini ji. This helps a lot. There are gaps in my understanding and such discussions either help to solidify ones beliefs or help to gain new insights…
For me, I have Cancer Ascendant, with Saturn in 1st, Moon in 2nd. No planet in 12th house.. not sure how to interpret it. The article on Cancer ascendant is how I discovered this blog in the first place and the observations there are very much applicable to me.
Will make an attempt to interpret the 12th house as per your other posts and report back.
        God Bless!

        Hi there
for anyone who lives out of his homeland, the 12th house gains more importance in life. so analyse what Mercury is doing in your life. as generally mercury is with Sun or Venus you have to consider this too.
check where does Gemini sign end up in your D9, if any planets occupy it. also the Mercury in the D9.
the dasha/transit when you left your homeland

and whatever it is, you have chosen your birth chart at the moment of birth. so trust your higher self and try to use the advantages that the 12th gives. Try to hold on to Sanatan Dharma.

    Dear Tejaswini ,

Thank you for the posts on both Gayatri Mantra and Maha Mrutyunjai Mantra, and for your whole blog. I return to try to understand almost daily.

I have been drawn to both mantras, by the grace of the Divine, but was told both were not to be chanted by women.

Apologies for the somewhat frivolous light hearted comment to follow,
I also did wonder in translations why the cucumber held such significance within the pantheon of fruits and vegetables 😊

    Namaste

    Hello ma’am,
Had no idea my innocuous doubt on 12 th house would trigger this waterfall of comments and counter comments. 😀. Guess the house had to show it’s energy.
On a personal note, when I was still sort of new in medical school we were shown deliveries being conducted.
My attention was however focussed on how the baby was blissfully unaware of anything or anyone…it was just itself it had to bother about.
Few years later and few specializations down the line ,when my team and me were dealing with critical patients in ICU in their last moments…what I did notice was again nothing really matters to any person in those moments.

So essentially when we enter (this particular lifetime existence), and when we exit …we don’t really care about pretty much anything or anybody else…
It’s only in between we gather all garbage.
We assume egos, assume opinions, assume so many things ,imagine insult and slights where there’s none, take too many things way too personally….all of which actually adds up to nothing.
When you see the birth and death of things..then the in between also assumes a different meaning.
Again this is not intended at anybody in particular so please don’t waste energy on assumptions. Simply my personal musing.
And ma’am thanks again for the patience you continuously display….😀
    🙏

    Namaste Respected Madam,

What a post!! This blog, you and your Guru have enormously and positively changed my life’s outlook.

Madam, just curious- any tentative dates on the ebook you are writing? Eagerly awaiting that Ma’m.

As a side note- with respect to this mantra some are pronouncing it as Trambakai yajamahe ( owing to some Sanskrit grammar rules of ma sound + ya sound) I’m not proficient enough for sanskrit grammar rules. Any merit to this type of pronunciation mam?

      Hi there
      This is not correct.
the halant is a consonant it cannot b pronounced as a vowel.

Book I don’t know. Still about 8K words to write and then rechecking and editing. Odin will decide.
As it is i have got so busy tht writing a post a week also seems difficult these days

Hello Tejaswini Ji. If there is some way I can help out with the book, I will be honored to do so. I can do spell-checks, editing or any formatting work. I can make illustrations, diagrams or if any followups etc are needed.
I can help put the word out on social media ( if you are interested). Or anything at all.
        Thank You. God bless.

Can you help me understand why the worship of Kula devata or ancestral gods is important? Is the way they guide and protect us different from a non ancestral deity? What form of prayers are offered to them? Is it the case that some families have ancestral deities who are powerful while some others aren’t so powerful?

This has been in my mind for a while now. Will be great if you could elaborate on this.

    Thanks in advance!

      Hi there
every family as a series of family gods,
      the family god
      the village god
then the god of the people as a group.
eg my birth family – family god is Khandoba. the village my father’s family originated from has Bhairav as the village god and as the family belongs to Maharashtra, worship of Bhavani is necessary. he lives with me but makes sure that these deities are given their due on their specific days.
as i am married, the deities i worship are of my husbands family. so i make sure that i think of them with gratitude on their typical days.
on an individual level there is the Ishta-devata. which everyone worships daily.

i wrote a bit in this post
      https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2020/03/01/real-nature-of-the-sun-and-the-deities/

if you know your family gods, do worship them, they give a lot of protection, help and are always there for you. if your deities are the powerful ones and you are giving them their due, regularly then naturally you will be more effective against people who do not do so.
