Whom to give Daana

Last Updated on May 20, 2022 by astrologerbydefault

I have written some posts on remedies for imbalances in your horoscope. There are only two genuine methods to do this, one is Mantra and second is Daana. Then you can always try to understand what is happening and change your behaviour and mind-set, this will require a capacity for self-analysis and will power. I wrote this post on Daana and there were some questions. Putting the answers as a mini-post.

Mantra remedies can be done in several ways. There is Homa, ie you burn ghee, it is clarified butter and quite expensive. eg your daily Agnihotra or any special Homa/ Yajnya that you can perform in temples or at home. Or you can do mantra jaap of the graha-s. Or do your regular mantra-jaap, this can be a life-long Gayatri-mantra, which in Sanatan Dharma is compulsory for all above 6yrs of age. Or listen/ recite a mantra of your choice daily, eg Shri-Sukta, any Shankar, Vishnu, Brahma, Ganapati, Devi etc vedic mantra are all acceptable. Or do a special Mantra anushthan with Brahmins in temples. Or do your Dhyan daily, focus on the Soham. Or give Arghya to the Sun with the Surya mantras. Mantra is harnessing the energy of fire, Raja gun, ie movement. You are consciously shifting the energy patterns with the Mantra-s, and this essentially is the remedy to your problems.

There are several ways to balance your energies using Mantra. Choose one depending on your personal inclination and the severity of the imbalance. All of them work and equally well. Choose a remedy as per your liking and your capacity to perform it. Do not take on so much that you start feeling the remedy as a burden! Performing anything as a remedy should not make you feel oppressed, rather it should fill you with joy, make you lighter from within.

Daana remedies require you to give away typical items with an intention. These items can be water, grain, cloth, oil, typical items or even silver/ gold. You give it away in temples, the older the better. Or you are required to put these items in flowing rivers or the sea. Or if you can find a genuine Brahmin (this is very rare these days), then you give away these Daana items to him.

Someone asked me if it were better to give charity to poor people rather than giving it to temples or Brahmins or putting the stuff in the sea. It would also be a humanitarian gesture and some poor person would benefit from it. I would say no. Specifically ‘Daana’ cannot be given to these people. And there is a reason.

When you give the items as a part of Daana you are giving  away the imbalanced energy. The Daana remedy is linked to specific items which if you refer to my this post are often typical items. eg red flowers for Mars, now what is this poor person going to do with these red flowers infused with an unbalanced Mars energy? The item is loaded with the intention ‘take this negative, sorrow, grief, pain, trauma caused by the imbalanced energy’. And it goes away from you but only if you give it to someone who is capable of accepting it.

When you put the item in the flowing water/ sea, the energy of the water ‘neutralises’ it. Water is the domain of Varun, he is a tremendously powerful deity, a conscious intelligence and he accepts your ‘daana’ of these negative things and in return blesses you. The negative energy you have requested him to accept does not affect him at all. He converts it to positivity and returns it to you as a blessing.

Similarly when you give them items to a temple, the energy of the deity similarly accepts your ‘gift’ of imbalance. Best give these things to a old temple where pujas are being performed for a few hundred or more years. Your donation of pain will be more successful. Choose a temple with powerful Nav-graha moorti-s. Sometimes you might be required to give this Daana to your family deity, Kul-devata, this temple will generally be near your ancestral village. The deity is a conscious intelligence which has been worshipped by mantras for several hundred years. The continual intentions of so many years make these temples even more auspicious. You can offer your negative energy as Daana and receive blessings in return.

And the last option is to give it to a genuine Brahmin. I have mentioned in some previous post, that genuine Brahmins have the most difficult life. They have to follow several strict routines, do personal pujas, perform pujas for others, never accumulate wealth, never charge fees, only accept Dakshina and absorb others negativity. Every story in the Panchatantra starts with ‘there was a poor Brahmin’, there were genuine Brahmins back then and are very rare now. So if you give your Daana to such a Brahmin, then he can absorb your imbalance and give you blessings in return.

And finally, if you have a genuine Jivan-mukt, the Advaita himself as your Guru, this is the rarest thing. You can request him to take away the imbalances. He will do so. Then you do not even need to give him the items etc, just a heart-felt prayer is enough. I have seen my Guru do this to so very many of my family members, my guru-brother/sisters and also with my own issues.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

I have seen beggars sitting outside Shani temples on Saturdays and people giving them food as a Shani-daan. If you do this then remember that this not a Daana. It is a humanitarian gesture and you may have done some good karma. But you might even create negative karma for yourself in this process! These beggars expect, they want from you. eg Once outside a temple, I saw a kind person distributing small food packets to beggars. Some of the beggars were throwing the packets away after checking what was there inside. They have an anticipation to what you may be giving them and if they think you have given less than what they were expecting they will curse you instead.

If you want to accumulate good karma by giving charity, then there are two options. You can help out in old age homes or in orphanages. Here these people are forgotten by society and in unfortunate circumstances. They do not expect anything, do not anticipate. If you feel like it and can afford it, you can buy food for people living there. If you are going there to deliver this food, remain in the background, ensure that their care-takers actually give them the food items. (eg once my Mom had gone to an orphanage for something. Some kind person had sent crates of mangoes for the children. The caretakers were eating them rather than giving them to the children. The caretakers naturally accrued negative karma. And the donor too, as he did not make sure that the food was given to the actual children.)

These two types people are capable of giving blessings from the heart. eg if you give a small child a sweet, he may not say ‘thank you’ in so many words but there is an innocent happiness triggered in him, this adds to your positive karma. Once this same child grows up into an adult, this capacity to feel innocence is lost. Then if you give him the same sweet he will not feel that same joy. For the aged people, they have seen everything so a compassionate gesture this same innocent gratitude, this adds to your positive karma. The very young and the very old are in a way unselfish, they have the capacity of innocence. So you can gain positive karma by giving them food. Food is consumed and gives basic happiness to the one who eats it, it is the best option for charity. This is not Daana in the real sense of the word. But it is definitely a positive karma which will help you in different ways in life.

www.psychologicallyastrology.com

Daana always means ‘Sat-paatri Daana’, ie the person whom you are giving the Daana to has to be genuine, true, positive, Dharmic, etc. ie he should be able to absorb the negative energy you have offered in the pure sense.

    Hello,
I read that you have mentioned few ways to do daan but what if there is no temple, river or bramhim around, can the daan items (edible) be spread on the ground for birds and or microorganisms to consume?

it wont be daana, but feeding birds is a good deed nevertheless

        Hi,
I live in western part of Massachusetts with no sea close-by. There is a river but it is not walking distance and I do not have a car (United states does not have good public transportation).

        So where can I daan?

How many times should one daan? Once a week?

      2. astrologerbydefault Avatar

        Hi there
Then offer whatever it is to the divinity in the Sun, hold it in your hands, and throw it to the skies with the intention of offering it to the Sun.
ideally Daana is one time thing, but if you want to do it weekly its your wish.

Maam. The 5 th house is called lakshmi sthana as well as purva punya sthana. The placement of ketu is supposed to indicate reasonable experience in the house it’s placed in. But other than that are there other indicators in a chart to see what we bring into this particular life from previous lives.
Also is there any way of ensuring our spiritual practice can continue into future lives. Do we consciously will it during our dhyaan. Or just focus on regular dhyaan and the rest will fall into place. I do have a dedicated spiritual practice in this life but I have no way of predicting what I might be in another life and I really want to able to continue on this journey of self discovery. Hence the question.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
the entire chart is about wht you bring with yourself from your past lives

in my close family, one person has his ketu here and another has his rahu in the 5th, very interesting subjects fr life-time studies. so find some samples around you whom you can study and tally what happens in the charts and in their lives.

you do what you can in your current life, why worry about the future?
if you bring yourself to a level where you can be aware at the moment of exit, you can choose your next life. i have written somewhere on what happens at the instant of physical death.

Maam few yrs ago, when I was staying at a close relatives house, I had come to know through her househelp ( inadvertently) after my articles of personal use went missing, that she had enlisted the help of a tantric to try to harm me. But since she was also scared of possible backlash, she also continued to visit a devi temple n keep diya. After I found out about this, I had held my devi mahatmay book and wept as to how devi can even accept such a person’s prayers.
That was pretty much the last time( atleast till the time I had to stay there), the woman was able to light the diya at the altar. She used to exhaust an entire match box n then throw it in frustration. Then she started calling me to light the lamp n it used to burn nicely. Even if she tried switching on the bulb near the altar, it used to explode n shatter the glass few times.
The next time she tried to go to a devi temple, her car tyre burst and she was stranded on the road. Several bizarre things continued to happen to her. Thankfully I was able to leave the place, and when I last heard about that woman she was in a pitiable state, out of money and in very poor health.

This all took place when I was in my venus mahadasha Jupiter antardasha, both of whom are conjunct in same degree of my fifth house. So though I went through a very problematic phase, there was always divine hand holding me up. So many strange mystical events took place, that used to stun me. It’s strange what things we can bring in from purva punya sthan( good and bad) that too when two gurus daitya and deva decide to teach you.

Wonderful post and a great way of showing the difference between Dhaana and charity.

Lots of gratitude for explaining the deep understanding of the word Sat-Paatri Dhaana. People are always making jokes about Desi cow feeding and putting items in water. I did not know the meaning as well but simply felt that there must be a meaning because nothing is random in Sanathan Dharma. Thanks for helping us

      Hi there
If you have a genuine desi cow or bull in your area, feed her/him something with your hands regularly, all your life’s problems will dissolve..
only thing it should be a genuine desi cow/bull, prominent hump, a long fold of skin under the throat and skin should shine, look oily.
This is a ‘Go’ equivalent to a Mata or a Nandi.
your aura will change if you touch their humps or do pradikshina around them. they have a golden aura.
i think we Indians are safe as long as these Go are there in our cities.
people get irritated when they sit on the roads etc, but around them the aura is so pure! they by their very presence/aura keep our cities clean on the astral levels. of course no one really understands this part so …

half-breed animals have furry skin, no or small hump and no skin fold under the throat. they are just animals, you can feed them for positive karma part

    Dearest Tejaswiniji,

I loved your earlier post on Daan and this one too♥️ You have explained so beautifully, especially the energy component 👌🏻 I could especially relate to what you wrote about beggars. Years ago, my uncle once gave money to some beggars while our car had stopped at a red signal. The beggars came rushing once they spotted two of the beggars getting money and soon my uncle ran out of change (he was giving away notes of Rs 10 and above, not coins). Imagine my shock when the ones who did not get any money verbally cursed my uncle! I was badly shaken by the negativity of the beggars and till date dislike giving them money unless it is a very aged person who can’t work. And I give only if I am led to. The beggar industry is a racket anyway. Better to feed cows – it makes me very happy. I have many times touched the hump of a passing cow – something I copied from my dad in childhood. Till I saw your reply, didn’t realize its significance! You could maybe write in detail about our desi cows and our ancient practices regarding cows. Ignorant people, some Hindus included, make so much fun of our use of cow urine and dung. Cow urine is used in certain Ayurvedic preparations as medicine. And there are people who ill treat cows, including some people who run a dairy business. Many people do not give cows the respect and care that they deserve.

I have a question for you. Some people advocate releasing caged birds to get good karma. But there are some people who say you should not free caged birds as then they might be killed by bigger birds and that they are safer in a cage. I personally have never kept birds in a cage nor do I like it. Was wondering will it be good karma to release caged birds? But what if they get killed after release?

    Sorry for the rambling🙏🏻

    Lots of love and gratitude

Only the desi cow/ bull is the ‘Go-mata’ or ‘Nandi’. Its a different energy level altogether.
Half breeds and the jersey holstein etc types are animals. Never drink their milk, its highly damaging.

I have never asked anyone to release caged birds, its not a remedy fr anything.

      1. S Avatar

Namaste again Madam, I wanted to ask about milk and luckily you mentioned it. Where we live we get only the Jersey milk. There is something called A2 milk that is sold here and the company claims it to be original A2 milk. If you have heard it, is it the same as desi cow milk? If you have not heard of it, I guess this calls for some milk research.

      2. astrologerbydefault Avatar

        Hi there
A1 and A2 are types of milk protein.

Only Indian desi cows pure breeds will give pure A2 milk. Only this is fit fr human consumption. Tht too it shud b drunk fresh, max a day after the cow gives it.

Never ever drink A1 ie hump-less animals milk. It will cause illnesses. Never drink pasteurised or milk processed in any way. These processes spoils the milk. It does not remain milk anymore.
But not everyone is lucky to have access to real milk.
So do what u think is best.

Forget milk. I dont think even 1% of humans drink real water in their lives.

      Hi there
i grew up in a house which had a pipal tree about 5 mt away and a tamarind tree and 2 banyan trees too very close by. these trees were not in my yard but on public land. on some days/nights/evenings was not good to remain near these trees. the energies can get very intense.

personally i would not buy a house with a full fledged pipal tree in its yard. and i wouldn’t let a pipal seedling grow into a tree in my yard. maybe i would remove the plant and replant it somewhere else.

and common sense is to not plant big trees near houses, they may damage your house.
there are several books on vastu-shastra which give all this detailed stuff,

Thanks maam. Our house is in centre of a city and the adjoining gardens don’t have this situation . But we have had to remove sacred fig tree plant twice, and peepal plant few times already. Despite doing thorough clearing of garden n soil they seem to come back. We also have multiple hedges of tulsi which initially grew wild and came I think with wind pollination, later we put them into organized designated spaces . The bilva plant also came in presumably with the wind. Hence my doubt.

    Hello Ma’am,

I wanted to know about the people who had breech birth, I am one of them (In marathi, it is called Payaluu). What’s the effect on astral level? and on spiritual level?

These people have exceptional healing ability with legs, especially in case of backache. But I have also heard that they are much prone do danger from water. Is it true?

One of the relatives showed me how people like us have an ability to detect under water. He took a iron pan which is used in kitchen for making chapatis (oval shaped, not flat). Need to put this pan at a place where it is expected to have under water. Then put a coconut on the pan. And then a person has to stand on the coconut. The moment I stand on coconut with both legs, the pan rotated so fast that I fell down, it just happened within a fraction of seconds. But this didn’t happen at other places. Later on they did find water through bore-well.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
breech births, in astrological terms is an abnormal situation. so all the patterns fr dangerous deliveries, danger to mother/child etc will apply.

i do not know of any special ability being generated just coz breech birth.

what your relative has shown you is very common,
      it is dowsing for water.
anyone can do it. and you just need to hold the coconut on your hands, it jumps up a bit when you walk over a point with underground water.
but standing on a coconut? we do not touch fruits with the feet, esp something as auspicious as a coconut.

Vivah is a sanskar, this bond is broken only after the physical death or sanyas of one of the two Dharma pati/patni.
there is nothing called ‘divorce’ in the energy sense, though it is common in the legal sense
charts are checked before getting married to avoid being ‘dysfunctional’ later,
today in several cases this is not done,
if the correct procedure is not followed then issues can crop up, so face up to the dysfunctional-ness later, or get legally divorced,
      what can i say?

I’m trying to look at 1,5,9 houses. In the rashi chart there aren’t any planets in the 5th and 9th house. I used this post https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2020/10/08/systems-houses-signs-the-math/ to calculate the Chalit chart to make sure because of zero degrees Moon. With the procedure outlined in that post I get that 1st house is from 6 degree Sagittarius and 6 degree Capricorn ( I checked couple of times to make sure it is right)

6 degrees Aeries to 6 degrees Taurus is 5th house

6 degrees Leo to 6 Degrees Virgo is 9th house.

All the online programs are showing Sun in 5th house and Mars in 9th house in the Chalit chart. But Sun is at 9 degrees Taurus only and falls outside the 5th house and same for Mars falls outside 6 degrees ( very close but outside 6 degrees if i do minute-second calculations). I’m not sure what I’m missing here.

“Kanya Daan” takes on a whole new meaning with this explanation of Daana.
The daughter is then a symbol and creation of a negative karma, a burden, an unbalanced energy that is now passed on to the husband who will now take on the burden and deign to protect the woman? To me, the idea is downright dangerous.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there

Did you read the first two lines of the post? These lines set the context for this entire post.
This is about “Daana as a remedy for astrological problems”.
      Context is all important.
Intention is all important. There are the actual sankalp mantra.
When i give away til oil as a Shani-daan, i do it with the “intention that take away my problems.” i speak the Sanskrit mantras when i do these things.

by posting this comment do you think that is the marriage of your daughter a “remedy for your unbalanced horoscope?” This thought is so absurd.
This comment is the exact reason why i insist on Sanskrit. without understanding Sanskrit and then the Ved you cannot understand Sanatan Dharma.
Unfortunately most people do not know their mother tongue, Sanskrit, and most of them do not even wish to learn it.
I put up a post on how to learn Sanskrit. do it for 3 months and you will be fluent in it, guaranteed. but i am sure no one has done this.
How can anyone even live a fulfilling life without Sanskrit is something i cannot even comprehend.
And Ved? I dont think anyone has even looked at a book or a pdf of the Ved-s.

      anyways.
The items which can be given as daana come from the Atharvaved. It mentions, cows, horses, cloth, load bearing animals, grains, valuables, gold etc. You can give daana of only those things which you ‘own’.
No human, no daughter, no son, can be given as a daan. No human can ‘own’ another human, this is very clear in the Ved.
the parents do not ‘own’ their daughters or sons. They are responsible for protecting them, taking care of them, giving them a good upbringing etc. The parents are also required to search for a proper husband or wife for their children. but the children always have the choice of rejecting these proposals if they did not like them. so many examples on this.

There is no word like ‘kanya-daan’ in Vedic vivaha. Read this line twice.

Nowhere in the Ved-s is there any mention of ‘kanya-daan’. this idiotic word appears in some puran-s and in later texts, this does not have any validity in the Vedic sense, ie it is not as per Sanatan Dharma.
for anything to be accepted in Sanatan Dharma, it must be given in the Ved (Ved, Brahmana, Aranyaka, Upanishad). if not then it cannot be accepted.

It is always Pani-grahn पाणिग्रहण loosely translated as ‘holding the hand’. this is the proper word used in the Ved. If you are lucky in this life, you will have daughters and do their proper Paani-grahn. if you do so, you will gain such a huge chunk of punya which cannot be described.

‘kanya-deya’ is a part of the vivah sanskar, this words means the gifts that the woman is given during her marriage. these gifts are her’s alone, this is a part of her stri-dhan. Most likely this ‘kanya-deya’ got mistranslated, misconstrued and converted into ‘kanya-daan’ in later texts.

there is a entire story/ allegory on the Shankar-Parvati marriage, which is actually today on Mahashivratri!
Her mother Maniavati got so scared seeing Shankar’s form, with Bhasma, snakes, tiger skin, Jata etc, that she got very worried about Parvati’s married life with such a husband. Parvati had chosen her husband herself, a love-match in today’s words.
thus Mainavati was unable to participate in the Paani-grahn with the full positive intention. She and her husband were unable to gain the complete punya from this. If she had done this with the full intention both Himalay and Maniavati would have got Moksh at that very instant.

Do use a bit of common sense before running away with your thoughts.

        Ramya

Thank you for the clarification. You seem to have left out my immediate second comment which clarifies that my comment is not specifically about the content of this post, beyond the meaning of the word Daana. I wrote that because I had a feeling you will interpret my post exactly as you did 🙂 (but some issue- that post came under the name “Reader”, but it was me)

My bad for not being clearer that. Obviously this is primarily an astrology blog, so I do know that is what you’re talking about and I should have stuck to the topic at hand. I wanted to delete my comment as I myself thought it was irrelevant to YOU, but wordpress does not allow such things. You may delete it now, it doesn’t matter to me either way.

Yes, context is important. I should have been clearer in stating that my context was in reference to actual-lived society, not the vedas. The status given to women in Vedas was high, yet it clearly is not reflected in actual lived context. My saying that is not an insult to the Vedas themselves, but that life is disconnected from it and I personally would rather acknowledge the disconnect. Anyway that is neither here nor there.

Even if it does NOT appear in the Ved, that is how it unfortunately occurs and is referred to. I had always been telling people that it is a stupid and insulting term (Kanya Daana) and people give weird justifications for continuing to use it. Your explanation on the word Daana confirmed my own hunch to me.

    Dearest Tejaswini,

What happens in the case someone feels they are owed something and they in that entitlement commit theft from someone already struggling?

What kind if karma is Theft and how does it manifest as payback in life ?

And if someone steals from you, how do we know to let it go as a karmic debt from a previous life or an injustice?

    Kind regards
    Simmi

      Hi there
Its your conscience at work, it decides all these karmic balances,
      so ask your self

see how your 6th house operates, anyone linked here takes something from you, it will most likely be a part of karmic rebalancing

Namaste Tejaswini ji 🙏 thanks for this post & i am glad i am not too late to post a comment here since it’s still open…😊

A couple of questions I thought of clarifying and i hope you r still open to answer in this forum….

    1) once you perform the daana as a remedy prescribed, would the devajna (astrologer) be able to see the impact of it aka if it was effective, the improved situation in the next reading? For e.g. if it was for a particular graha dosha, would he/she be able to see the present state of the graha’s ability to give results?

    2) generally, would a devajna be able to give a prediction of how much (how many years of) karma is left in this life for a particular area, for e.g. professional service or so..?

    Thank you 🙏

      Hi there
      1. to see the effect use prashna
      2. Jyotish can tell when u will retire/ resign professional service. But the 6th house related activity will remain as long as u r alive.

        Thank you Ma’am🙏
So for an empty 6th house whose lord (Mercury) in 8th house would make the 10th house active throughout the life…

    Mam

    Loved the article.
Can you please kindly guide me on adoption of kids..I am not saying that I want postive karma out of it but no negative karma as well.
Can you please say something on adoption .

      Hi there
      https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2019/01/11/assisted-reproductive-technology-and-adoptions/

earlier when i was seeing charts, i have helped parents in selecting appropriate charts of children whom they later adopted. Some children have their exact birth times available so you can show them to an astrologer.
But even if there is no birth chart, the suitability/compatibility with the adoptive parents can be seen using prashna.
