Raj Yog in the horoscope

Last Updated on May 20, 2022 by astrologerbydefault

There are so many combinations on the Raj yog that it often becomes confusing for students. To begin with remember this simple concept, “Any combination of the Kendra and the Kona energies is a potential Raj yog”.

The Kendra houses are the 1st 4th 7th and 10th. These are the pillars on which the entire horoscope is raised. There is one house from each of the trikons, Dharma 1st, Arth 10th, Kaam 7th and Moksh 4th trikon-s. The potential of your horoscope is summarised in these 4 Kendra houses. If you understand the Bhavat Bhavam concept, the importance of these 4 houses will be clear. The 7th house is the only house directly linked to the 1st. And the 4th and 10th are directly connected via the bhavat bhavam to the 7th house. The personality expresses itself mainly through these 4 houses in a solid manner.

The Kona houses are the three, 1st 5th and 9th. The 1st house is a Kona as well as a Kendra house and interlinks the energies of these two types of houses. It is the pivot around which the entire horoscope turns. The three Kona houses together are actually the Dharma trikon. This represents the power of the personality and how you use it to ever-evolve yourself. This interlinked 1/5/9 axis of genius, creativity, foundations, luck, blessings and auspicious merits is the real creator of your dynamic personality. In this axis, one aspect of your personality creates the second which again creates the third which cyclically feeds back to the first, in an ever evolving spiralling manner.

  • 1st house –  the overall personality, the overall environment, role in society, will power, health, longevity etc, basically a snapshot of you
  • 4th house – the security, comforts, emotional health, nurture, mother, childhood experiences, basic education, house, lands, vehicles etc.
  • 5th – divine intelligence, creativity, expression of creativity, children, self-ego, recognition as an individual, spirituality
  • 7th house – husband/wife, partnerships, legal relations, business, fertility, passion, foreign travels, business rivals too
  • 9th – all the support you will receive from all sources, your beliefs, patrons, peers, paternal figures, religion, ancestors, your past life merits etc
  • 10th house – social presence, power, prestige, profession, salaries, actions done to resolve karma, power, authority in public etc.

The concept of Yog-karak is also derived from this. If a planet simultaneously owns a Kendra and a Kona house then he is capable of giving a lot of positive results in life. He then called a Yogkarak. This one planet placed well can confer ‘Raj yog’ on his own.

www

So open your birth chart. If there any connections between the following, you have a ‘Raj-yog’ in your chart. It is as simple as that. (There are other combinations which are also called Raj Yog, but the common factor is that the energy of the Kona or Kendra has to be involved.)

  • 1st lord with 4th lord
  • 1st lord with 7th lord
  • 1st lord with 10th lord
  • 1st lord with 5th lord
  • 1st lord with 9th lord
  • 4th lord with 5th lord
  • 4th lord with 9th lord
  • 5th lord with 7th lord
  • 5th lord with 10th lord
  • 7th lord with 9th lord
  • 9th lord with 10th lord

These connections can be,

  1. Exchange of houses, also called parivartan (post here)
  2. Kendra/Kona lord occupying a Kona/Kendra position (one exception is the Kendradhipati combination post here)
  3. Sometimes, even if they are conjunct or even aspecting each other in a positive house then too you can consider them to be in a sort of a Raj-Yog. More the combinations more strong is the yog and more likely to give significant results.

These planets creating the Raj-Yog should be strong and capable of auspicious results. So you will have to check out their Shad-bala, Ishta-bala, Vimshopka,  Ashtakvarga, position in the Navamsha etc depending on your level of study. (There are other combinations too which are called Raj yog, but to begin with, start with this concept.)

www

And it is a very common question is that despite having Raj-yogs in a chart why do they fail to realise their promise. Here are some points which you can use in your study.

  1. Power of the ascendant sign. This sign produces your physical body, the physical environment around you. If the sign is afflicted by malefics or in any way blocked from giving results, or are not capable of auspicious results then the personality and the environment is not strong enough to produce the results of the raj-yog.
  2. Power of the ascendant lord. This graha coordinates between the personality and the environment. The dynamic aspect. He has to be strong to be able to make full use of the potential of the chart. (post here)
  3. Power of the birth Moon. The birth Moon is a major force in your chart, almost equal to the ascendant lord. Analyse him properly before you do anything else. He controls your astral body, emotions, perceptions etc and subtly influences everything around you. Eg you might become the CEO of your company but if your Moon is weak, you will suffer stress and not be able to enjoy this position.
  4. The Dasha-s which never come or which come at the inappropriate time of life. You have to learn Dasha-s very systemically to be able to time events. Vimshottari dasha system has to be learnt in depth. Study at least one more Dasha system in addition to Vimshottari. Always use two Dasha-s systems to cross check your predictions. The potential of the house is triggered only in the appropriate Dasha, which should come at an appropriate time/age. Eg. If the triggering dasha comes at the age of 4yrs age and it is to do with the 5th house. What is the child going to do about his 5th house potential at this age? He might get parental love, be a confident child etc. His parents will benefit to some extent from the child’s chart’s positive energy and thus the child will indirectly benefit. But that is about it. Now if this triggering Dasha were to come at the age of 25yrs then the actual person would have really been able to use his own energies.
  5. Then it is possible that the results may be delivered only in specific mahadashas/ antardashas/ pratyantar dashas. eg. if it were to occur during Rahu Mahadasha then he will take away the successes after his dasha period gets over. So a spectacular rise followed by a rapid descent is seen.
  6. The fine-tuning can be done using transits. These are the regular movements of the grahas in the zodiac. These can be used to exactly pin-point the exact timing of the event within the broader framework of the Dasha.
  7. Next is the divisional charts. You cannot predict only with the birth chart. Eg a beautifully placed Sun in the D1 becomes debilitated in the D9. The potential is hollow, it will not give happiness, instead give inauspicious results, a beautiful apple with a rotten core. You have to analyse the D9 always. And in case the question is specific then the specific DC should also be referred to, eg for profession then the related D 10 too should be seen.

Why does some event occur? Why does some promised event not occur? If it did occur, why did it occur the way it did? Why at this typical intensity? These are questions which make one a good predictive astrologer. Try to learn astrology systematically (post here), analyse your sample charts. Try to match the events in life, like getting a job, marriage, deaths, divorces, birth of children etc with the charts. This is the only way you will learn. Just reading books is not enough. Learning to predict events successfully in the correct perspective comes only by practical practice.

(There was a question on this and I felt it was better to write the answer as a small post.)

Maam first house being both the kendra and kona, also the personality and appearance house among other things. Does the trend of facial surgery ( especially for ‘ looks enhancement’ (for lack of better word) affect first house in any way ( or even second house).
Since none of these procedures are essential to life, do they activate 6 th house( medical expenses) or 8 th house (surgery)in any way when people choose to do them. I have never seen this topic addressed anywhere.
I have a cosmetologist friend who gets clients from 16 yrs upwards for various enhancements and ‘job’s. Hence was thinking about the effect on their charts.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
any surgery for whatver reason will involve Rahu, Mars, scorpio sign, 8th house, 8th house lord as per the individual horoscope. more intense the patterns more serious will be the condition.
the 6th house from asc will give the nature of the disease of the physical body which needs this operation.
eg only Mars involved, might result in a bad cut and a few stitiches
eg if its Mars +Rahu in scorpio, aspected by the 8th lord of the chart, can mean an emergency life saving operation.
eg. you can do a study of women who had to get a caesarean done, there are several in this current age, examine 20 charts, with the dasha/transit. in this too caesarean is sometimes, not a life-saving operation, but a more ‘convenient option’ for all concerned.

for medically unnecessary but psychologically necessary cosmetic surgeries, Rahu will be very prominent in the chart, eg linked to asc sign, asc lord, either in birth or transit,
and the 8th house etc items for physical surgery will also exist.
the 6th house from the Moon should also be seen in this case for the psychological ‘disease’ which triggers this surgery.
Rahu gives a desire for body modifications. this can be extreme piercings, full-body tattoos and cosmetic surgeries.
and yes it is linked to the medical expenses, 6th from asc, and painful surgery, 8th from asc, energies.

Maam just saw two charts of botched up cosmetic surgery of hollywood personality. Connection of 8 th house, rahu and lagna Lord in one, and 8 th house Mars and rahu and scorpio sign and 12 th Lord in another…
        Many thanks for the explanation.

Thank you Mam for this wonderful article.
    1. What about same 1st and 4th lord in 1st house for Sagittarius ascendent with 6th lord Venus.
So if we say medical expenses how would we know when this would activate or happen.

    2. I’m a beginner, been studying online part time from last few months while working. Thank you once again for this website.
I did read your article on transits but couldn’t understand much due to my little knowledge on astrology. Please if you could kindly write or put in reply to this question, how can I learn to read transits as I find it very difficult to combine from Lagna, from moon and than to add transits.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
if you are a beginner then first do the simpler things

      https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2018/09/25/learn-a-tiny-bit-of-astrology/
observe how things happen around you with the moon’s movemnt

or try analysing yourself with the choghadia
      https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2020/06/06/plan-your-day-using-choghadiya/

after a month or so of this practical exercise, you will gain some confidence on predicting using these two simple tools

then first analyse your own birth chart, tally it what you have. see if you can correlate what you calculate with what actually is. do this for a few more charts in your family. get to know how the planets actualy interact. take a month over this.
then go on to the detailed transits from the asc sign and the Moon

    Hello
I have been trying to learn how to use the other dasha systems, but have had trouble finding a source, specifically Satabdika, since PBHS states I can use this system for my chart.
Do you have such a post, or advice on where to study these other dashas?

    Thank you
    Joel

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
there is a book on dashas by shankar adwal where he has very very briefly covered most of the dashas. he has given how to calculate the starting point of the Shatabdika dasha and the time intervals of each sub-dasha. just 2 pages of info on each dasha.
you will have to really search to find someone expert on this. may not be possible on the internet.
it would be better if you first learn the Vimshottari in depth before venturing into these little known dasha systems.
i use kaal chakra as my go-to second system to tally the vimshottari results, becoz of the very accurate book by shaktimohan singh.
on a personal note i have the ascendant vargottam in the navamsha, in fact it is vargottam in 7 out of the 10 dasha-varga charts. despite this i do not use the shatabdika because there are no good books and no good examples on how to use it.
i find its better to use these two popular dasha systems as there are authoritative works on how to use them, plus good examples and if used correctly they give quite accurate results.

    Dearest Tejaswini,

Although unrelated to this post, i had to ask about something I’ve been pondering on for a while now. And i really do not trust anyone else’s word at this point. That Krishna /Vishnu devotees claim Krishna/Vishnu is supreme god, and Shiva followers claim that Shiva is. And there seems to be a debate.

Question – Who is god ?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
i have written several posts on Dharma, do look up the index page or use the search bar.
      eg
      https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2019/08/31/hindus-worship-intelligent-consciousness/

‘god’ is something that religions have,

Sanatan Dharma is not a religion, there is no ‘god’,
There is awareness, intelligence, consciousness, Advaita. and you yourself are that Advaita..

you are much more than Brahmadev Vishnu Shankar and their wives and the other deities.
The tri-dev are the satva raja tama gun!
you have to cross the Gun-s when you want to really experience yourself.
      they do not exist.

      Nir-gun, Nir-akar, Nir-anjan, Nir-vishesh, A-dvaita.
This state cannot be defined in the words of this creation as it is beyond it.
Finally you will transcend the creation represented by A U M of the Om and enter the Turiya, the ‘soundless’ part.
this is the Advaita, the light of the Atma, which is you yourself.
you are the Advaita, as I am, as is every Atma around you. There is no duality, no plurality.
but getting to that subtlest level of transcendence takes effort.
the false notions of ‘ i am Tejaswini’ ‘i am born’ ‘i will die’ even ‘i do spiritual practice’ have to be removed,
these lines are so ingrained within!

i have answered this question on sects and sub-sects in Hinduism, pasting it again here

Sanatan Dharma is the Advaita. This is the PhD level syllabus
rest all is junior grade stuff.

following a sect/ sub-divisions does not mean that you are following your true inner voice, conscience

Sanatan Dharma means that you have to follow your antaratma, and what is your antaratma essentially? Advaita. experiencing this reality takes a lot of efforts as you hav to remove all false notions from yourself.

i wrote a post on Bhagvat Gita 18-66, sarvadharma parityaja, maam ekam sharanam ….. in two parts.
it is one of my most inspired posts.
read it if you want to.

read the Bhashya on the Mandukya + Karika by Adishankaracharya.
it is Clarity, every Hindu/ Sanatani/ Dharmi must read it, irrespective or whether they understand it or not.
read it at least once in this life, read it like a story book, read it like a bedtime story, but read it.
lay its seed in your self. at some time, in some life it will turn into the tree.

and for this specific point on one sect trying to prove itself right and disproving all the others,
the answer has given by AdiShankaracharya himself in the Alatshanti prakaran shloks 3 4 and 5.

The one who realises the Advaita has no issues with one sect trying to prove itself bigger or the others smaller as by doing so they are proving their own falseness, ignorance and foolishness.

This felt right and makes sense. I will look the book up.

I love that you’re so approachable , non judgemental. It can get so intimidating because there’s so much false knowledge out there and one can get lost .

So many people enter into the conversation about sanatan dharma with an ego attached to the point of view beimg presented and have no space for basic questioning without getting offended.

        Lots of gratitude 💛 💙

    Madam,

I have a doubt regarding transits. Please resolve.

For eg the present transit of jupiter is in capricorn. But after some time it will move forward to aquarius. The transit period of jupiter in one sign is considered as on year.

Will the effect also change according to the retrograde or forward motion or will it give the result with respect to capricorn irrespective of the motion?

    Regards

      Hi there
for transits, the planet will give results as per the sign he is in at the moment
eg even for Saturn its considerd to be 2.5yrs but he too goes forward and backward, for him too his transit results will be as per the sign he is in at the moment

Every soul is unblemished in its pure state. When the soul chooses, it’s next role to play out, the intention before entering the womb, must be surely to work out one set of karmas. What then prompts, the new life to take part in so much negative Karma involving lust greed and anger. Instead of resolving karma, it seems to be fixated only on earning new horrid karma. We might not remember our unblemished absolute state, but what promotes such depravity by so many?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
Brahma sutra chapter 3 section 1 deals with how the choice of birth is made, if you wish to read it.
it all depends from your perspective.
A Jivan-mukt does not see any difference between anyone, there is no duality. he remains in that transcended state always.
A Yogi might intellectually understand that there is no duality but has not experienced it yet. he is on his way home.
common people think and believe that we are all different. we play the game
When you think of it, the game of creation is on. Lila, for this game, there always have to be certian basic things going on, eg there has to be a dev-asur sangram always, there is to be Dharma-Adharma always, always Satya-asatya, Ved-Aved, Vidya-Avidya, Shunya-Ashunya, This is the domain of the prakruti, Devi etc. enjoy the Maya as long as you wish to,
but once you are tired of the Maya/ Lila/ game and want to go home, ignore the maya, focus on your Self.

    Hello Tejaswini ji,
Have a question on an unrelated topic.. on Auras..

With one’s sadhana, if & when one can see the aura of an energy (in this case, checking on positive energy), is there a way to relate it to a specific form/shape based on the silver shimmery outline that’s visible? It’s pretty wide with some outline & hard to trace completely! Is there generally a connection between this energy & your ishta devata of upasana?

    Thank you 🙏

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
I wrote a post on how to see auras.
And several posts on the energy color etc of sounds thoughts bio electricity haunting psychic attacks etc ie different aspects which add to or affect the aura energy.
Do use the index page or search bar.

It’s shape has nothing to do with ur ishta dev. Its about ur personal energy level. In a normal human at rest its an oval shape. Depending on the physical activity and mental emotional conditions it changes shapes.

If u r able to learn how to see the chakras, the 7 are visible in their different colors within the basic aura. And the sahasrara is like a flower with infinite and very long petals swaying. Depending on ur spiritual progress these ‘petals’ are longer brighter.
Real Gurus have an infinitely huge powerful peaceful very very beautiful aura.

Thank you for the immediate response 🙏😊 indeed I will check the posts on Auras and it sounds exciting to hear the beautiful bright auras of Gurus🙏

However, in this question, i was referring to a pale brown net like small oval dot in my peripheral vision ever since I started mantra japa, which keeps moving if I focus on it. Recently, when i started to stare at it (unfocused) in sunlight, could see the bright white/silver shimmery boundary (very clearly at some points of the boundary and vague elsewhere) which is quite wide (fairly large in area) & the entire shape is not traceable as it keeps moving & unable to get caught in vision! Felt curious to know what it could be energy wise.. since i do have an ishta devata 🙏😊

    Namaste Respected Madam,

I have a question Black thread wearing with the intention of shielding. Is there a condition as left wrist or right wrist and can children wear them too? Can it be tied forever including cycles etc and does it have to changed occasionally?

Are there any meaning attached to aura colors of objects? I read your posts and see inanimate objects take on the aura of the user. So if I receive a mantra charged shielding thread I see one thread has a greenish blue outer aura and the other one has a pure white aura with specks of blue.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
If u r getting threads charged by someone u shud ask him about wearing it.

Personally in my family we wear a black thread on the right wrist. Its worn always, even women. Children too wear it. It changed in 2-3 mths as it gets used up. If it falls off on its own a new thread is tied.
The aura of the thread depends on what mantra is put on it. Like the threads we wear have pure white/gold aura.
Of course! inanimate objects take on the energy of intention. Eg Houses take on auras of people/ entities living in it. Its important to learn to see these too.

Thank you Madam. The threads were given to me years ago but we never wore it and let them sit in my puja ghar. I’m told they ( black and red ones) are from the Bhairav temple. Thanks again madam for all the knowledge you are sharing. I reread many of your posts everyday to let all the knowledge sink in. I think I’m thinking about all this so much that you actually appeared in my dream LOL yesterday. It was a positive dream.

    Hello Ma’am,
I read few of your articles and found them very logical, interesting and trustworthy. Thank you for writing these.

I am curious, if a person is born with a specific chart because as per the law of karma this is the life one person has to live called as vidhilikhit then can one really change it?
For example if a person’s chart is to commit suicide in this life because that person had committed suicide 2 lives ago (in one of your blogs it is mentioned that 7 lives to pay for 1 suicide) then can that be changed? Can a person even though as per chart will commit suicide but remedies will prevent that from happening?

Also, if the remedies prevent it then will the chart change to show no suicide?

    Very curious.

I feel that I have been bad to my previous boyfriend and I have been reading about narcissist personalities. How can one change it or improve? Another thing that bothers me that now that he has left me, becoming better feels too late.
Can fate be changed? because we cannot escape our karma.

      Hi there
Read those posts on the on dark and bright halves of the chart.
There is always freedom of action.

There is a shlok which is on the first page of the astrological magazine
      फलानि ग्रहचारेण सूचयन्ति मनीषिणः ।
      को वक्ता तारतम्यस्य तमेकं वेधसं विना
The movement of the planets can only indicate the fruits to those intellectuals who wish to know.
But the exact interpretation is known to none but the All-knowing One/Brahma.

No jyotishi will give a 100% guaranteed reading as its not possible. We read in the realm of probabilities. Some events are more probable than others. That is wht we predict.

Remedies will reduce the intensity of the event. Not prevent it frm happening.
Eg max reduction is when u experience it in yr swapna / dream state.

Reg suicides, its a very intense karma active fr a very limited window of time/space. If appropriate remedies are performed in time then tht final act can b averted. But again the intensity of the patterns and the probability matters.

If u know what u have done is wrong, then u must also know what u can do to make it right. do what will satisfy ur conscience in this matter.
It doesn’t matter if u two r together or not. He is a person and if u feel that you have done something wrong then you shud at least apologise if tht will satisfy yr conscience.
Being together is not a prerequisite fr an apology.
