The menstrual phase of the monthly cycle

Last Updated on March 4, 2024 by astrologerbydefault

There were several questions on what happens during the menstrual phase of the monthly cycle in women, what should be avoided during this time etc, thus this post.

Before reading this, I want you to learn how to make a chi ball (post here) or learn to sense your chakras (post here) or learn to see auras (post here). Unless you can sense the movement of the chakras in your body, sense the direction of their movement etc, this post will be incomprehensible. Every theory should be proved by practice, else it is useless. So unless you learn to sense energy, ie pran, this post will remain essentially meaningless words.

Chakras generally move in a spiralling clockwise direction. By this movement, they power the naadi network ie send Pran through them. This is what happens in a normal healthy, human body.

They go anticlockwise only in the following situations,

  1. Women in the menstrual phase of their monthly cycle, ‘periods’. This phase generally lasts for 5 days, sometimes 6 days. (For physical hygiene purpose, you can stretch it to even 7 days.)
  2. Men, women and children who are suffering diseases where the body is getting terribly damaged and very fast. Eg last stages of cancer and similarly fatal diseases, where the disease progresses so rapidly that there is net destruction of body tissues. (saw this several times)
  3. Black magic intended to severely harm or kill can make your chakras go anticlockwise for several days, causing severe damage till you think that it is better to exit the physical shell. (I have experienced this once)

transits of mars

When the chakras are clockwise, the Pravrutti cycle operates. The body builds itself, the tissues repair themselves, the mind is interested in the world, activities are performed. Some people call this a positive chakra movement. You wish to live on in your body and take steps to ensure that the body/ mind remains heathy and well. The clockwise direction is of evolution, growth, ie basically creation. That is why we draw the Swastik in the clockwise direction always. And the Shri Ganapati we householders worship has his truck to the left. And we blow conches of a typical shape, to increase the energy of Pravrutti around us. Its opposite is the Nivrutti where the energy is destructive in nature, it destroys the manifested. (If you know how, you can use this Nivrutti energy for spiritual purposes ie to create detachment from the material)

In healthy, normal women from the age of avg 12yrs to 51yrs the body follows the reproductive cycle. There are avg 13 cycles in a year. One cycle is for an avg 28days. (28days in a lunar month.) And of these 28days, for avg 5 days the body self-destructs internally. Anticlockwise spinning energy is the direction of destruction of the material. During these 5 days, the body is undergoing internal controlled destruction. The reproduction related tissues are being ripped off, there is loss of blood, the mind is under stress etc. The fertile egg that you had produced is killed and thrown out of the body, with other tissues which were designed to support it in case it were to get fertilized. If this sort of destruction has to occur, the body has to first set the chakras in the anti-clockwise motion.

Destruction of this scale cannot happen with the regular clockwise energy. It is a highly precise thing. If you can sense the speeds of the chakras you will observe that the intensity is very high on the 1st 2nd days, slows down on the 3rd 4th days, is very slowly anticlockwise or slowly turning forwards on the 5th day. Then the chakras turn around and assume their regular clockwise motion at the regular speed.

During the ‘period’, the physical body becomes weak, the aura of the lower abdomen becomes very red often with black streaks. There is always pain and trauma in the physical body. Some women suffer backaches, cramps, nausea, stomach upsets, etc. The mind and emotions are affected, ie there is lethargy, disinterest, dissociation as nivrutti operates. Best option during this period is to rest, sleep and relax in whatever way you can.

The astral body shows the effects too, you absorb negative forms of energy more easily from others during this period. So you should not go to places which are haunted. There are entities here which can link into your astral body deeply and cause damage. You can get haunted by spirits if you go to isolated places near rivers or alone in forests, ruined ancient places or places where traumatic events have occurred etc.

During this time you should not go to events related to birth or death. As during this time, the barriers between our Martyalok and the Pitrulok are open. And you do not know what all can latch on to you from the other dimensions causing you harm.

If you do not know how to use this anticlockwise energy you are very highly vulnerable to several things during this time frame.

red

During this period, you cannot do any sort of practice which manipulates Pran in the Naadi-s. No energy-related work of any kind, ie you cannot even remove evil eye during this period. No Yog-asan, Dhyan, Japa etc as you actually work very hard when you perform these activities. You put in a lot of effort trying to coordinate your breath, mantra, focus, posture etc in a very precise fashion. If you do such activities during your periods, ie when the body is internally self-destructing, you can subtly damage your Naadis. If the naadis get damaged, then their connected body organs will eventually get physically diseased.

During this period you cannot properly absorb clockwise energies around you. The energy generated during regular pujas, Arti, blowing conches, going to temples, etc is the clockwise one. So if you go to some place where such clockwise spinning energies are being generated you will face an energy backlash. Your chakras are going anti-clockwise. These two forms of energies sort of collide within you. If you are sensitive enough, you might feel nauseated, dizzy, feel like throwing up etc on the physical levels. So you should avoid going to temples, pujas etc on these days, ie places with very intense clockwise energies. So if you remain in environments where clockwise spinning energy is amplified by pujas/ worship/ mantras etc you might eventually hurt yourself temporarily or permanently depending on the intensity of the place’s energy.

All Hindu/ Sanatan Dharma followers have the Tulsi plant compulsorily in their homes. Tulsi carries with it the energies of Satva-gun, ie Bhagwan Vishnu and Devi Laxmi and pujas are done every evening twilight to the Tulasi. You should avoid doing these pujas too on these few days.

transit of mars

Earlier and even now, women avoid cooking during the menstrual phase. If you touch food, it will change its energy. Try touching fresh milk (not the liquid sold as ‘milk’ in cities) and see what happens. Or try setting curds with fresh milk. Or set any food for fermentation during this period, it will not set well.  The energy of destruction whirring within you changes the energy of the food/ liquids you touch. This energy can become distasteful.

During pujas, deities are formally invited, requested to sit, accept the offerings of flowers, clothes, saffron, sandalwood, mantras, camphor, arti, food, water, etc naivedya is offered to them. They actually absorb the energies of all this stuff which is offered to them. We do pujas of Saumya-forms of Bhagwan Shankar, Bhagwan Vishnu, Devi Sarasvati, Devi Laxmi, Devi Parvati, Shri Ganpati etc. We wish for prosperity, happiness, positive things in life, constructive things. So these deities are in their Pravrutti forms, clockwise energy. In a puja, the deities actually absorb the essence/ energy of the offering, amplify it and give it back to you as their ashirwad/ blessing when they formally leave at the end of the pujas.

If during the menstrual phase, you touch any item which is to be offered to them, your anti-clockwise energies interfere with this process. When you touch an item, it’s energy goes anti-clockwis. Eg you eat only veg food, someone invites you with all respect and serves you only non-veg food. Naturally you are going to be upset and point it out to him. This is the same thing, but here because they are deities, they will leave rejecting your offerings and this is an additional negative karma for all.

If you have taken any Sankalp/ intention to do some pujas/ mantra/ Dhyan every day, then these days are not counted in your practice. You will simply stop on the 1st day. Rest for the 4-5 days or upto 7days if you want to. Then on the day you are to resume your practice, have a full bath, ie put water over your head too. This ensures that the entire aura of the body is refreshed from top to toe. And then resume your practice. You do not have to do double or extra or anything to ‘make up’ for these rest days.

Rebalancing karma is often accelerated in the menstrual phase of the monthly cycle. So I always consider women very lucky as they have this opportunity for 5days every month, but only if they understand and use its energy. This time is considered very auspicious for certain activities. If you worship the Ugra forms of the deities then maybe you might find a Guru who can teach you how to do these typical pujas etc. Earlier women who knew tantra etc could use these energies of destruction to fuel their pujas, manifest their intentions, or move on their spiritual path, but now that knowledge is lost. (The only exception to all this is if you worship the pure Advaita and are very clear in your concepts, then there are no bindings on you regarding anything at all.)

Again, this time is not dirty or unclean or anything like that. No woman should feel ashamed or unhappy during this time. If anyone thinks that a menstruating woman is in some way unclean just because of the blood flow is simply showing his own ignorance. This phase is the very visible reminder of the creative energy and also the destructive energy that specifically only women in the reproductive age group can access. It is a very positive and a healthy thing to happen.

It is just that we live in a time where we do not know the pujas where this anticlockwise energy, the energy of destruction, of Nivrutti can be fruitfully utilised in a safe manner and that is the reason why we women have to wait out for these 5days every month.

Again, you must learn to sense pran, your chakras etc. Unless you learn this, you might not be able to really understand this post.

    Dear Tejaswini,

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for your valuable feedback under the “Daily Puja” post regarding my questions on Arghya and menstruation/spiritual practice which has now allayed my concerns. I am yet to read the above post as I am keen to follow your advice on chakras awakening first but again very appreciative on what I am sure will be another enlightening post.

      Hi there
Actually there is nothing called ‘chakra activation’ or ‘chakra awakening’
In a living human they are all awake and active.
These exercises will just make you aware of them

Maam what about women who wear rudraksh on a daily basis. That’s not to be worn for 5 days of the month?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
I have written 2 posts on Rudraksh. Do check the index page to read them.
Fr average people there are rules on wearing rudraksh/ rudraksh malas which have to b followed.

But if u r wearing a rudraksh on the advice of a Guru who knows wht he is doing then you can wear it as per his directions. These Rudraksh are fr a specific purpose, eg fr protection . These are abhi-mantrit rudraksh ie charged with mantras. But to find some genuine Guru who can do it ….

Also maam if you could throw some light on an unrelated topic. Why is it that rahu and ketu which are always 180 degrees away in the rasi chart, found sitting conjunct in the same house (together) in some divisional charts? Why then does the rule of 180degrees apart not apply there in the divisional charts?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
This is exactly why i wish everyone learns to draw their own D1 and at least their own sapta-varga charts by hand.
You do it once so tht u understand the math behind it.

Rahu Ketu occupy degrees on the zodiac which are separated by 180 deg.

the 30 deg span of each sign is further allocated to different signs.

In D1 a 30 deg span belongs to only 1 sign.
Ie 0 to 30 deg Aries belongs only to Aries

In the other DC this 30 deg span of each sign is allocated to different signs in different ways.

      Eg fr D9
0-30 degs of Aries are sub divided into 9 parts each of 3 deg 20mins
Each of these parts is distributed among 9 different signs in specific sequence.

      Eg in D 30
0-30 degs of Aries are divided into 30 parts each measuring 1min and each part is allocated to the 12 signs again in a specific pattern.

So its quite possible that the deg containing Rahu And the deg containing Ketu will get allocated to the same sign in the other DC. And it does happen as you have seen.

Yes it does happen in multiple varga charts of a person as I have seen. Thanks a lot for clearing that up for me maam.

How do i find out how to improve my deep rooted bad habits that have been with me multiple lifetimes and what i am here to achieve in this life? I ask because i have little clarity on my direction and a tendency not to follow routine.

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
this question can be answered only by your self
you can try a guided meditation session, i have written a post on it
and if your mind is unable to follow a routine then you have to gradually train it,
take up some simple routine which you can do. i have written on several tiny things which you can do everyday.
unless the mind is obeys you, nothing much is really going to happen on the spiritual front

Thankyou, Your blogs are super helpful and healing. Basically I get demotivated by anything boring. Cant do mantras (they wont work for me), cant seem to do much other than focus on the black white sri yantra, its slow progress but feels like something is there. However the whole routine thing feels and intimidates – almost like it is monumental amounts of work. If you can, please please put together some strategies or help for those of us who might for whatever reason be suffering . I suspect ADD or ADHD has a hand in it where it all seems so huge we assume there is no way we will be able to conquer this on a daily basis. We cant seem to get it together but we know we absolutely want to. Our minds are 100% desiring but the execution and coordination from the body quite is not there.

PS- love the Dr Strange & Dr Who pics & quotes. Makes it so worth while finding some fun gems while we read (even though we know it’s all fictional shows).

& Thank-you for what you do- i hope people know it’s not free (it costs time and effort , energy, money, precious leisure time lost). I appreciate the immense collection of knowledge that has ever so kindly been revealed. I have never read a collection of info before that spiritually , astrologically and religiously connects the dots across all platforms. Finally! SOMEONE out there who can make sense of this variety pack of faiths that all claim they know best and demand blind mindless acceptance and following. Woman you are just the Queen B of making stuff work ! 😉 . Hope you have a nice day.

        Hi there
in our current world, we are being encouraged to not concentrate. Eg kids today cannot read a book for 5 mins. too many distractions.
so do anything you like for 1 min in the morning and in the evening. be regular with this much at least. tht would be a good enough start.
always follow your conscience, your inner self.. and to be able to hear your self clearly, the mind’s chattering has to be silenced.. so the regular practice is important,
Sanatan Dharma is the eternal foundation based on your own conscience, Jyotish etc are all part of this same thing.
there can be no coercion, no brain-washing, no blind acceptance of any philosophy, if so then it cannot be the foundation of your life.
I like Dr Strange and Dr Who, the actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Smith got some really awesome lines in those shows.
thank you for the compliment 😊 and a nice day to you too ..

    Dear Tejaswini,

Please would you be able to shed some light on how does one then stay protected spiritually when one might perhaps be more vulnerable to e.g. psychic attack during the menstrual cycle if for e.g. removal of evil eyes or any other energy work are not advocated?

      Hi there
one cannot do any pran/ energy-related work in this time.
earlier women would not go outside the house during this time,
the 1st 2nd and 3rd days of the cycle are more suceptible
avoid going in typical places, is the best way to protect oneself,
and doing evil eye removal after these days get over

I have had these doubts since always but never got the appropriate answer 🙏🙏🙏

And maam, if possible and if you find it correct then can you please advice on how can we use energy of destruction in these 5 days to progress spiritually.

Thankyou so much for the guidance 🙏🙏

      Hi there
i had read about it in some book, but its not possible in this current age. plus there are no genuine Guru-s who can teach it. It is a Vidya so cannot be learnt without a Guru.
So best is to just rest.

Maam please explain if possible, how can instant remedies be prescribed for supposed problems in chart, if no lifestyle changes or genuine intention on part of person doing remedy. If the remedy is based purely on obtaining some material pursuit, and same old destructive life choices or life style exists, what change can such a remedy bring and for how long. I fail to understand this. Many people advise do this little donation here, problem solved etc. People might buy for eg, a bag of wheat and donate and continue doing all the nonsense they were anyway doing. How’s it going to help the person. And what’s the effect on the person who suggests such remedies to people.?

      Hi there
suppose you have to cook dinner, so you prepare everything an hour earlier.
later while eating it you realise that something is missing, your Mom tells that you need to put a pinch of salt. You put it and it tastes better.
similarly you have created your karma earlier. Now you are enjoying/enduring it, you realise that something is missing and your astrologer tells you to do some small remedy. you perform it and its a better experience.
its the power of Jyotish which even in this current diluted form can give simple remedies which work. These simple remedies are a part of the Arun sanhita. this part is popularly known as the Lal kitab.

Now for the future, you need to prepare for your next meal, ie u have to perform some positive karma or engage in spirritual practice so that you have something positive with you.
eg in the current life you see someone enjoying riches, wealth etc. he is enjoying some positive karma from his past life. it will get exhausted now. in the nxt life, if he has to enjoy it all again he must do some positive deeds else he will be a beggar walking the streets nxt.
You always have the power to act, how you act is also your choice

Hi, it has been noted in ancient history, across cultures, that the cycles predispose different feminines. Red Moon Cycle, women who menstruate with the full moon and ovulate on the new moon, are often healers, high priestess, shamans, the wise-woman, etc. Would you be kind to elaborate on a post regarding these menstrual types?

    1. astrologerbydefault Avatar

      Hi there
I do not know where you got this information from. It is incorrect.
You get your periods when your birth moon and the current moon are either in the 6th/8th/12th from each other. Or most commonly on amavasyas.
In case your 8th house/its lord is afflicted you will have problems in the cycle.

for having occult abilites etc Rahu Ketu play a pivotal role. It can be seen from the horoscope

    Namaste,
Thanks for the informative write up.
In a household when wife is running her monthly cycles , are there any restrictions on husband in continuing his specific anustanas /daily rituals. And should husband take bath every time if he has anustanas spread across the day (Given we have to share lot of things at home)
And we have seen and heard deities coming on a person. How should we perceive it , does dieties like Ganapati/Devi/Shiva/Vishnu/Aditya come on a person or is it messenger of these dieties come on a person.
May I request your thoughts on above.Thanks.

      Hi there
If u r not sensitive then you do not have to do anything extra if ur wife has her cycle. You shud follow ur routine.
She has to take precautions as much as she can. Like not touching the puja related things and all.

People in whom deities come are a bit different. And yes, the actual deity comes in them. The deity is a highly aware consciousness/intelligence. It gets channelised.
But there are also several people who fake this.
