Navamsha Analysis Summary

Last Updated on January 21, 2022 by astrologerbydefault

Navamsha chart D 9 is your full potential and the D1 the birth chart is the actual manifested part of it. In analysing a Navamsha chart try to do it in these three steps it will be easier. Also give yourself time to think over the patterns, do not rush it as you are overlaying your D-1 and D-9 charts to get meaningful information.

1. Note the sign occupied by every planet and the rising degree in the D-1 and compare to where it shifts to in the D9. This will give the potential of every planet and the rising degree v/s the actual expressed. Here you will analyse the planets/ signs. (I have written six posts on navamsha analysis, do go through them, Index here)

2. Note the signs placed in each house of the D-1 and see how these signs shift, ie check to which house they shift to in the D-9. This will give the potential of each sign v/s the actual expressed. Here you analyse houses/ signs. This potential v/s actual energy of the signs will naturally affect their owner and resident planets energies also. So you add more layers of meanings to your analysis. This is called the Rashi-tulya navamsha concept.

3. Navamsha tulya rashi. This is the simplest concept to understand. The Navamsha chart is considered to be equivalent to the birth chart.

This concept can verify the birth details to some extent.

  • ie in our example chart, the Moon in D-1 is placed in the 9th house, Pisces sign and in the D-9 he shifts to Cancer sign 9th house. Both are watery signs, Crowley was a highly intuitive occultist. 9th house is luck, destiny, blessings, past lives merits etc. These Moon patterns match what is known about his life, so his birth time should be reasonably correct.

This concept is useful in seeing the transit effects of Saturn and Jupiter. Simply assume that the D9 is your regular birth chart. Superimpose the current transit position of Saturn and Jupiter on this chart and now see how they affect the chart.

  • In our sample chart, the Moon shifts to Cancer sign in the D-9. Saturn transiting over the Moon is a traumatic period, the middle 2.5yrs of the Sade-sati (the 7.5yrs of the Saturn-special karma). So Saturn transiting Cancer, ie transiting over the core potential and expectations of the birth Moon would have given his trademark fear, guilt, restrictions, frustrations, isolation etc but all this in the deepest heart for Crowley. This hits at the inner levels and is harder to deal with.
  • A situation looks normal on the outside but is terribly traumatic for you on the inside. Or there is a traumatic situation in the outer world but on the inside you remain calm and composed. So tell me now, which situation is worse? This is why Navamsha analysis is important.

Navamsha Analysis Summary

Some people are always confused with the Navamsha concept. They say that this divisional chart is ‘activated’ after marriage or that it represents the spouse in your life. This is not entirely correct. The D-9 is quite active from the moment of your birth till your physical death. It does not get ‘activated’ only after marriage. And it does not necessarily represent your spouse. It can be linked to your parent, best friend, brother/ sister, spouse (or even a deity for the Sanyasi-s), ie it is linked to the person who is karmically closest to you in your life/ several lives.

In the Indian context, earlier the husband/ wife was considered to be the closest person. Till our grandparent’s times, marriages were performed early in life, ie around 15-18yrs so the two would grow up together. Now we get married at 30-35yrs, by this age, growth/ maturity has been achieved and life patterns are set. Mostly people marry on the basis of physical attraction which vanishes in a few months after marriage. We don’t spend much time with the spouse, we simply don’t have the time to spare, ie job, work, commuting, different interests, different thought processes, different expectations from life, different social groups etc. Even if we are at home together, we are separately busy, on different phones, in different rooms and doing our individual stuff. Separations and divorces are very common now, we do not consider marriage to be a life-time relationship. We don’t bond with our spouse as deeply as our earlier generations did. Thus we cannot outrightly consider the spouse to be the closest person anymore, we do not grow together with him/ her nor do we bond as deeply on the karmic levels.

In some charts where the maturity of the Ascendant lord has been held back by his close conjunction with specifically Rahu or Ketu, or even Saturn this person remains largely innocent, immature, childish, gullible, juvenile, not very connected to his self/ environment, etc till the age of 48yrs for Rahu/Ketu conjunction, or 36yrs for Saturn conjunction. The understanding of the personality, the environment around him, his behaviour, others expectations and most importantly an appreciation of Karma is held back. In this case he can meet his ‘closest person’ later in life and still grow in maturity with him. The other extreme case, would be where the ascendant lord is conjoint specifically with Jupiter. Jupiter matures the earliest at 16yrs of age, but he will now be held back because of the other planet/ascendant lord, he will give his full mature effect later. But because of Jupiter’s expansive influence on the ascendant lord, the person will be quite mature, philosophical and significantly older for his age. (These both extreme cases can turn to full-fledged asceticism, ie take Sanyas and take on a deity as their ‘closest person’ if the rest of the horoscope permits).

The D-9 represents your inherent potential and core expectations. You behave as you really are only with those rare people who are closest to you. You cannot show your naked face to just anyone. There are extremely few such people, maybe you will have just one or two ‘closest persons’ in a life-time. Once you meet him, it is a life-time thing, more correctly it is a several life-times thing with him. And remember it is reciprocal, you are his ‘closest person’ too. As you interact with him, his own D-9 combinations also start pushing out his potential into his physical manifested life.

You share your deepest emotions, aspirations and thoughts with him. You can tell him everything and also listen to anything from him. He is your trusted adviser, a true confidante. This person has been with you for several past lives, you have shared so many important things with him all along these lives, he has become a link to your deepest core. You two have evolved together and you still are growing together. His current incarnated life (pancha-kosh) is inter-twined with yours so intricately that it cannot be separated. He is deeply karmically bonded to you. Your D-9 is a summary of your past lives assets/ regrets and he has been an integral part of all these past lives. You two have been husband-wife, master-slave, teacher-student, doctor-patient, mother-son, father-daughter, every possible relationship in your lives together. All the deepest felt actions from giving each other birth to dying in each other’s arms, rescuing or even killing each other are there in your combined past linking you two karmically. When you interact, you also bring up these unfinished things up for resolution, this can lead to short-lived intense arguments but ultimately it brings you two even closer and you both evolve faster.

All these stored learnings of your past lives are linked to his very presence. When you are with him, you are more than just your regular self. Naturally accessing these past resources within you is easier when he is around you. His very presence in your life triggers your growth. Things normally not in your reach are available, you can explore your inner self more easily. And it is always a reciprocal thing, as he too equally grows when he is with you. (In addition if this is also a karmic relationship, ie Rahu or Ketu are involved in synastry, then it gets more deep, you cannot avoid it nor stop it nor break it, it simply unfolds.)

Continuing the trend of so many past lives, in this life too, he is your closest person, very important to you. His actions and reactions go deep into the core of your being, you have no defences, no filters against him, you cannot resist. You unconditionally accept the energies he triggers in you, you trust your mutual bond, so know that it is eventually for your best. If he makes you happy, this happiness will reach the core of your being and if he rejects you, you will be hurt to the depths of your inner self. These deeply felt actions then trigger your deepest potential. After you meet your closest person, your personality starts expressing more of its core. You evolve in leaps and bounds, your life feels like it has been reenergised and has started moving on in earnest. If you observe your interactions with him and analyse, you will notice that just for the two of you together, for this small time, you are more your D-9 than your D-1 and he too behaves more like his D-9 with you. You both mutually trigger things for each other. Sometimes these things may be happy if you both have a interlinked happy potential. But sometimes it can be traumatic if some past unhappy event has been triggered for resolution. Never forget to analyse the current dasha/ transits, as these will trigger the events indicated in your birth charts, D-1 or D-9.

This person inspires you to achieve your life-goals. The materialistic life goals are rather obvious, but we are looking at the Navamsha, so here we should focus on the spiritual life-goals, we are analysing the astral self which evolves relatively slowly over several lives. The D-9 is most connected to your birth chart’s 9th house, the Bhagya-sthan, the house of divine blessings, merits from past lives auspicious actions, blessings of the ancestors etc. (Do read my post on the 9th house.) This ‘closest person’ will help you realise your actual spiritual, humanitarian, higher learning, philosophic etc goals for this life, the true evolution of your Awareness. These goals were decided by your higher self at the time of your birth. When you interact with him, you get hints about your own spiritual path and progress. (For Sanyasi-s, ascetics, the deity becomes the ‘closest person’ who inspires him.) Navamsha chart is essential in understanding a person at his innermost levels.

Jyotish cannot be used to analyse the Soul, the Parabrahma, as is beyond the geometries of the manifested universes. But to reach the Eternal Self, you have to use your this incarnated 5-layered body as a vehicle. This 5-layered body is governed by the laws of creation which include Jyotish. Using Jyotish you can analyse, whether your vehicle is in good condition or capable of taking you to the Self. And in this journey, your ‘closest person’, the one most deeply karmically linked to you, plays a very pivotal and unique role, triggering your own potential from time to time. And so do you play an equally important role in his journey.

    Hi Mam,

thanks for this. Linking to your other article where you described impact of Yogakaraka Mars in Cancer and Saturn for Libra. Lets suppose Ven-Sat are conjunct in Libra lagna and Saturn is debilitated in Navamsha, does this mean person will attain maturity around 36 years as Saturn will hold back maturity?

In such case should one wear stone of Yogakaraka or lagnesh Venus as he is dispositor + Ucchanath of Saturn?

Grateful for the content and seek your guidance

      Hi there

the maturity of Venus will be held back by saturn till the age of 36 when they both will ‘mature’ together..
understand the meaning of ‘maturity’ first

    Dear Mam

Would you consider it to be conjuction if ascendant lord is with Rahu but 21 degrees apart (in same sign), both moving in same direction (both being retro)?
Would maturity of ascendant lord be held back in this case?

    Thank you.

      Hi there
The effect is max when around they are at max 15deg apart. So at 21deg it’s negligible.
the delayed maturity of Rahu will affect the result of the house/sign to some extent

Namaste mam. Concepts become clearer n clearer every time i go through your writings. But Here a quick query
if i remember rightly! you have said before that things get complicated when we see d-9 with house divisions like its shown in softwares. So when you say about checking the sign shifting from d-1 to different house in d-9, how it is interpreted? I mean for ex- like in above chart cancer sign(ascendant) goes to 9th house in d-9. So does it mean the self is interested in higher mind, philosophy, relegion n all 9th house related key words? How to understand this. what if cancer goes to 10th house of d-9! If you could clear this doubt with few more example like how if 2nd house sign in d-1 goes to different house in d-9 etc.. or may be in how in the above chart different sign in d-1 shifting to different house in d-9 with their significance.

And you have also responded to some query in comment box saying,” d-9 like d-1 hence all the general rules used to analyse d-1 can be applied in analysing d-9. So here want does the aspect mean? How to understand this? Example- in d-1 there are aspects. So does the aspect in d-9 is more subtle than d-1 ? Please mam if u could unclutter my understanding. Always grateful
