This is an example chart which I use in my blog. Aleister Crowley, the genius occultist of recent times. His birth details are 12th Oct 1875, 11:43 pm Leamington UK. His Birth chart and Navamsha chart are as follows.

To analyse the navamsha chart start with these steps. Here the rising degree is also considered to be equivalent to a ‘planet’. There are 10 forces, 9 planets and one rising degree which you have to analyse. Remember to begin with, Navamsha is about sign or more correctly which 1/9th part of the sign a planet occupies.

Navamsha starts with analysing every planet individually and his sign dynamics. For every planet you will have two signs, one in the birth chart and one in the navamsha. Check the sign of the planet in the birth chart and check which sign he shifts to in the navamsha. This is the first basic analysis.

• If he shifts to his own sign, his own mooltrikon sign, his friend’s signs, his exalted sign or is in the pushkar navamsha. His auspicious results, irrespective of anything, will be enhanced. Eg In our example, Moon shifts from Pisces in the birth chart to his own sign Cancer in the navamsha so gets more power.
• If he shifts to his enemy planet’s sign, his sign of debilitation his inauspicious results, irrespective of everything, will be enhanced. eg Rahu/ Ketu in the example chart shift to their debilitated positions in the navamsha, these now will give strange results in physical life, but contribute to spiritual development.
• If the planet continues in the same sign in the birth chart and the navamsha, this is called the Vargottam. His auspicious results, irrespective of everything else, will be enhanced. Eg in our example chart, Mars-Capricorn and Sun-Virgo are vargottam. Also Venus retains his own Libra sign in birth chart and the navamsha, he is at 2deg 19mins Libra, which is also his mooltrikon zone. This gives Venus extraordinary power and ability to give extraordinary auspicious results.

So now you know how to examine the power of the planet to give results. And how his apparent outer expression can be a reflection of his energies linked to another sign working in the background. Think of this as a subtle blending of attributes.

‘Apparent conjunction’ and conjunction of planets in the navamsha chart. This invariably causes a lot of confusion always. Let’s break this down.

If both planets are placed on the same degree of the zodiac they both will obviously be in the same sign in the birth chart and will be allotted in the same navamsha also. One Navamsha is 3deg 20min in arc length. The two planets are actually conjunct, physically with each other, will influence each other completely and give results in tune with each other. If there is such an example in your chart do analyse these two planets and their role in your life in depth.

• Most commonly you will find such examples in eclipse births where Rahu-Ketu are with the Sun-Moon, or Moon-Sun together on no-Moon Amavasya births, or even combust planets very near the Sun. These two planets will share the same birth chart sign and the navamsha both. The background and the foreground will be defined by the same set of signs for these two planets. Our example chart does not have this combination.

If the two planets are placed in the same sign in the birth chart but at a distance greater than 3deg 20mins from each other they will get allotted to different Navamsha. One Navamsha is 3deg 20min in arc length. This will change the results that they are going to give.

• In our example chart, you see there is Venus, Jupiter, Mercury in 4^th house, Libra sign. But they get allotted to different Navamsha, ie Jupiter goes to Aquarius, Venus-Libra, Mercury-Aries. Each planet is going to give very different results because of the different Navamsha sign potential backing its physical expression. In this, Venus is vargottam, in his own sign and mooltrikon too, so will give very strong Libra-Libra results. Jupiter will be a blend of Aquarius and Libra. And Mercury will blend Aries in the background with Libra in the foreground.

Then there is the ‘apparent conjunction’ in the navamsha sign. (I am using the word ‘navamsha’ and ‘navamsha sign’ with different meanings. Navamsha is the actual 108th part of the zodiac. ‘Navamsha sign’ is the sign which owns 9 parts. The circular table below will clear this up). The planets are placed in different signs in the birth chart but seem to be in the same navamsha sign in the navamsha chart. This confusion is caused by not studying the logic of the navamsha allotment and not knowing the math. If the two planets are placed at a degree distance of 40deg, 80deg, 120deg, 160deg, 200deg, 240deg, 280deg and 320deg from each other they will seem to fall in the same sign in the navamsha. These two planets are not going to influence each other like conjunct planets do. Both will be influenced by the Navamsha sign independently but will not be influenced by each other.

• In our example chart, Saturn and Sun are both in Virgo navamsha. But you cannot call them ‘conjunct’ in Navamsha. They are physically in very different parts of the zodiac. Sun is in Virgo in D1 and Saturn is in Capricorn! Thus Sun and Saturn will not give effects of conjunction.

So if you see that the planets in the same sign in the Navamsha they are not necessarily going to influence each other, do understand this concept.

This is how the navamsha are allotted. This table is a reference table and used everywhere.

The first column is the degree that the planet occupies in the birth chart in a sign. This 30 deg arc distance of the sign is divided into the 9 navamsha each of 3deg 20min arc length ie the 9 rows. Now open your birth details, check the degree occupied by every planet.

• eg if you have Jupiter at 17deg Aquarius, check the 6th row, and the second-last Kumbh rashi column, to get the navamsha of Jupiter. This is 12, ie Pisces. So your Jupiter results will be analysed as the potential of Jupiter-Pisces, own sign, expressed as Jupiter-Aquarius in life. How can you express a Pisces as an Aquarius? Think. Aquarius is gains, large friend circles, markets, trades, meeting groups, leader, luck etc. Pisces is privacy, solitude, contemplation, active astral life, guidance from the ancestor spirits etc. Jupiter is philosophy, humanity kindness, hope etc. So one way of interpreting this is, that the person may be some sort of a spiritual leader, who engages in internal contemplation and then interacts with large gatherings to send them a message of hope, philosophy etc.
• This is why the question is of utmost importance in Jyotish. I get clients who randomly say ‘tell me something about myself?’. This to my mind is very silly, ‘Your whole life story from life to death is laid out on the table, ask a question!’
• eg if you have Mars at 5deg Virgo in the birth chart, check which navamsha he does to? It would be 2nd row and Kanya rashi column. So Mars goes to Aquarius navamsha. So his expression will be analysed as the potential of Mars-Aquarius expressed in the physical environment as Mars-Virgo. Try to think for yourself on how this can be possible.
• Now, though the Jupiter and Mars seem to get allotted to Aquarius sign it is rather meaningless to consider them together. The navamsha are not rashi, they are 108 parts of the zodiac, so do not consider that Jupiter and Mars belong to the ‘sign Aquarius’ together.

So do this sort of analysis for your own birth chart and Navamsha placements of the planets. For a beginner into Navamsha this much is enough to being with.

Then, the more sensible way of looking at Navamsha and the birth signs is this circular chart below. The 1, 2, 3, etc numerals in the innermost circle are the 12 signs from Aries to Pisces. Then in the middle ring, there are the 27 Nakshatra with their four quarter-pada sub-divisions in the ring outer to them. And in the outermost ring are the 108 Navamsha divisions.

(I have mentioned several times that Indian/Vedic Jyotish is all about the Nakshatra-s. The signs/ Rashi-s are a short-cut. Now these 27 Nakshatra-s are each divided into 4 parts each, these are called the Nakshatra-pada. So the entire zodiac is divided into 108 parts. These 108 parts are nothing but the Navamsha divisions. The Navamsha or the Nakshatra-pada are the backbone of any prediction. It is very significant that the Navamsha parts and the Nakshatra-pada have the same width ie 3deg 20minuts arc and they are also coterminus. This is the reason that Navamsha is the most important divisional, more than even the birth chart. The birth chart is sort of an approximation, Navamsha is precision.)

Every one of these 108 divisions has different attributes and use in prediction, but you will need to study them in detail and practice using charts. This circular chart brings these three details, sign, nakshatra, and navmsha, before you in just a glance. It need not be drawn again and again. Just the basic plan needs to be drawn once and the planets written on it with pencil for the chart you are analysing.

• eg Jupiter is in Aquarius sign in the birth chart, in Purvabhadrapada nakshatra and in the Navamsha of Gemini. All these three if considered together will give better understanding of Jupiter’s effect on the chart.
• eg Mars, he is in Leo in birth chart, Magha nakshatra and Gemini navamsha. To analyse Mars results you have to use attributes from all these three.

If you can understand the logic of this circle your studies in Navamsha will get easier. A genuine astrologer will never see a birth chart alone. The Navamsha is essential, it is the background energy on which a person functions. You can sometimes ignore the Birth horoscope and use just the Navamsha for predictions. But you cannot ignore the Navamsha and do your predictions from just the birth chart, they will be incomplete.

But Jyotish is all about patterns and there are several techniques available. If the exact birth time of the client is not known, the D1 coupled with the dasha, transits and the prashna chart also can give quite accurate results. But most of us have reasonably accurate birth times available, so the D9 is too valuable to ignore. So do use it for your self-analysis.
