Hindus worship Intelligent Consciousness

There is quite some confusion about what ‘God’, if any, is worshipped by followers of Sanatan Dharma, aka Hindus. We Hindus pray with equal intensity inside temples dedicated to various ‘Gods’, to trees, to coconuts/ areca-nuts, the earth, at the sea-shore or to a mountain, a stone, or a river. We revere animals, especially desi humped-cows and elephants with the same intense faith. Ravens are given their due importance. If we have a living Guru we will do his puja. We touch the feet of our elders with respect. We recognise the divine energy in everyone, we welcome strangers with a ‘Namaste’, which means we recognise the ‘Ultimate power who is focussed infinity’ in them. (Namaste is a Sanskrit word which means, the paradox of the Para. Union of illusion and wisdom together. Depth of stillness and flowing movement together. The eternal unborn one in solitude.)

However different the external forms of the object of worship may be, the common theme is that we adore the ‘Parabrahma’. One might say he worships Vishnu, Brahmadev or Shiv but he will agree that he really worships the ‘Para’. The Para-brahma is the one beyond-para, the intelligence-brahma, who cannot be described in the limited language of this manifested world, the source of us all. For every Hindu the goal of life is to attain Moksh, ie to experience his own true nature. The individual soul/Jivatma takes several lives, creates and works out his karma. The law of karma is executed by the personal conscience-Antaratma. Whatever you act, think feel etc, this is evaluated by your own personal conscience.  You are your own judge of your act, you pass judgement also allot and demerit/ merit.

So the ‘god’ of Hinduism is the beyond, Para. And everyone of us is that same Para. Just we have forgotten our reality. Everything you see, feel, do etc is the Para which has taken on different forms. Follow whatever you choose. All paths lead to the same destination, enlightenment Moksh. The only difference between your own soul and the Universal Soul-Paramatma is the binding of karma.

Then the question is, if we worship one Singular Para, why this multiplicity of ‘gods’? Shiv, Vishnu, Brahmadev, Indra, Varun, Agni, Savitr, Prajapati, Shakti, Laxmi, Ganapati, Skanda, local gods, family gods, village gods, tree gods, mountain gods, the list is endless. The reason is that there is a multiplicity of human nature, each one is different. Some prefer worshipping a female-Devi deity, some prefer a child-bala form, a terrible-ugra form, a peaceful-saumya form, or the elements rivers- Aap, fire- Agni, etc. There is essential freedom in Hinduism, you can worship any form you choose. There is no compulsion to follow a rule-book. In fact there is no rule-book! You should choose the route which stills your mind’s chattering ’spiritual practice’ should be as per your inclination. And every route you choose will take you to the Source, because everything, including you, is a Ray from that same Source.

Our bodies, are composed of these different energies, the 33 classes of deities, the 5 elements Pancha-bhoot,  the 7 types of essences sapta-dhatu, the 5 sheaths kosh, the different types of vital energies/pran, etc.

Our soul, now that is different, it is Para.

Hindus worship Intelligent Consciousness

The Shri-chakra is my favourite yantra. It is easy to explain too because it is visual. You always focus on the central Bindu. This increases the intelligence levels which is an asset in material life. And acts as a guide map for the internal geometry to copy and set itself correctly. Each point and each line of the yantra is defined as a deity, ie an intelligent consciousness. When you stare at the yantra so many types of tremendous energies look back at you with intent attention. Each of these has a name (listed out in the Khadgamala at 2.41 seconds to 7.50 seconds is the main stotra). All of these points and lines are conscious intelligence increasing in energy intensity. Eg the outermost deities will grant you Siddhi-abilities to manipulate time/space/energy, anima, garima, ishitva, vashitva etc. Siddhi are looked down upon by the really serious practitioners. (Eg my cousin 2000km away was in shock, it took 2 seconds of focus to set his energy and physical body right. But if I feed my ego with this, it will create problems in my practice, my focus will waver.) They all pull you towards themselves. But you should understand that that if you gain the whole, these parts will be yours by default. Gain the Bindu and everything below it is automatically yours. You should focus on the central dot always.

This Shriyantra is You! Your energy diagram, you are focussing worshipping adoring your own Entire Self. Liberation is not going to come from outside, it is within you.

Then as you intensely focus your mind, the deities/ conscious energies of the inner circles also offer you abilities. The concentration of your mind is tested to the extreme at every step. You refuse to get caught in their gifts and focus even more intently till you see just the center-most equilateral triangle and the central Bindu. (You will actually see it in your Dhyan, a downward pointing triangle, the brahmanadi within the Sushumna). This means you have reached the Satva-Raja-Tama gun.

Now the test of focus becomes very subtle, the triangle has to be perfectly balanced for you to enter the inner most Bindu mandala, the region of the central Bindu. The three Gun are the essential substance of manifestation. All three are equal in power and importance. All three Gun are equal and they sort of merge form and reform in random continuous motion. This motion is the cause of manifestation. You need all three in perfect balance.

Without Raja-gun you will have no movement. To set the unbalanced Gun back in balance you will need to use the power of movement with intention. This means you will have to understand Raja-gun in its deepest sense. So the defining mantra of Sanatan Dharm is the Gayatri mantra linked to the active principle of Raja-gun, Sarasvati. Every Hindu is required to recite the Gayatri mantra every day! Raja-gun acts on Satva and Tama and puts them out of balance initially. So Raja-gun will be used intentionally by you to bring it all back into balance again.

You will face these three as your kundalini enters the vama, jeyshtha and raudri chakras. (It is long route but because someone asked I am writing this.) If you practice regularly you experience this in a few years. The 3 Gun are represented by conscious energies called Vishnu-satvik, Brahma-rajasik and Shiv-tamasik. Each one of these are equal to the other, no one is bigger or smaller. All three gun are to be ‘defeated’ as they are a part of the manifested, your kundalini will move beyond them. They are not your focus point, just like the Siddhi-s you gain. You are not Vishnu, Shiv or Brahmadev. You reality is even more deeper than these. But they are important in practice. You need help, support, a crutch, these are the crutches. Your source of faith, your ishta-dev, your family gods, etc are very important as they are the support in your initial practice. As your practice deepens you will gradually link with the central Bindu directly. You leave behind the crutches as you learn to walk on your own.

You become what you adore. You practice Dhanur-vidya, science of making war, stilling your mind, with single pointed focus, you will become a warrior. You practice tantra, you will become adept at it. You follow a criminal, you will become a criminal. You do mantra-jaap of Gayatri mantra you will find your internal Light. You follow a Guru you will gain Moksh. What you choose to follow is as per your conscience. Choose a route which appeals to you. But remember the law of karma operates so choose wisely.

The Vishnu Sahastranama is a stotra-mantra where 1000+8 names of Vishnu are given. It is from the Mahabharat. Bhishma recites it and tells Yudhishthir that it is the sure-shot route for Moksh. Each one of these names starting from Vishwam to Sarvapraharnayudha are tremendous. Vishwam means ‘everything’ also ‘individual’ and Sarvapraharnayudha means ‘the one who is ready at all times in all ways to fight’ (but fight what? The vagaries of the mind!). Understanding and experiencing one out of the 1000 words may take a life time as they are all paradoxes. I have recited it innumerable times (takes 30 mins) and done its Homa (takes 1hr). The burst of energy from this practice is infinite. Its energies are healing, even if you cannot recite, listening to it (I like this recital by Uma Mohan) also benefits.

Its phala-shruti which is read last is narrated as a conversation. Here Parvati asks her husband Shiv to reduce the power of this 1000+8 names into one word. Shiv gives this word as ‘Rama’ as being equal to the 1000 names. Then Krishna tells Arjun, ‘the real power of my 1000 names is achievable by the recitation of a single shlok ‘Soham’. So now can you imagine the power Soham has? To understand Soham you have to understand these 1000 Sanskrit words first, each is a mantra in itself. And conversely if you understand Soham you automatically understand the 1000 names! Either way you look at it both outcomes are same. You choose which path you prefer, destination is same. The last shlok said by Brahma is exceptionally awesome, “Namo astu anantaya sahastra murtaye sahasra pada akshi shirh uru bahave sahastra namne purushaya shashvate Sahastra koti yugadhaarine namah”, the energy of this one line!

What is ‘Krishna’? Bhagwat Gita is a Yog-shastra by Yogeshwar Krishna, it has to be practiced in Dhyan. To someone who does Dhyan, Krishna is the undefinable energy seen at the Ajnya chakra. This energy is the Guru/force which pulls the kundalini up to unite with the Kutastha purush. This energy connects you to Reality.

Read the Vignyan Bhairav tantra. Here Shiv/Bhairav, describes the practice which helps attain the state of Para. Every book on tantra is described by Shiv to Parvati. Even Jyotish is described by Shiv to Parvati. Recently am reading a Sanskrit book on Ramal-jyotish ‘Ramal rahasya’, it starts with this, Shiv telling Parvati to teach this only to deserving students! No one book/practice is greater than the other. If you can become a real Jyotishi you can attain Moksh via this route too. Every Vidya, every Shastra every Tantra and each type of Yog will lead you to yourself. There is nowhere else to go! But whatever you choose to follow, you have to practice regularly.

If you are inspired by Vishnu Sahastranam, the last name is Sarvapraharnayudha सर्वप्रहरणायुध. Be prepared to fight, in every way, at every time, with all possible weapons, against all possible enemies. And there are several. If you are following the Bhagwat Gita route, you will meet the energies of the entire Kaurav army and Kuru warriors on the Kurukshetra of your Asan. Your final enemy will be your ego as Duryodhan. These stories Mahabharat or Ramayan or Devi Mahatmya actually happen in energy terms as you do your Dhyan.

In this life I have done pujas using Mahamryutunjai mantra, Gayatri mantra, Navavarna mantra, Shri-sukta, mantras/suktas/stotras from Devi Mahatmya, obviously I do Dhyan. The end result is the same, stilling of the mind. After you do your recital, homa, whatever practice, you have to sit motionless on your asan for at least 30mins. This stillness is of the mind too, only then it is really Dhyan. Whatever you experience in these minutes is your achievement, a few steps further on the road to Moksh.

(There was this question. As my answer was too long posted it as a full-fledged post.

Hi, But Shri Vishnu Sahasranama is suggested by Bhishma in the presence of Shri Krishna in the Mahabharat for Liberation. Doesn’t this mean worship of Vishnu as the god among the trinity is superior? Or is it suggestive of worship of Sattva Guna for transcending the Gunas? Thank you.)

Moon in Scorpio into the subconscious

Signs of the zodiac are classified into fiery, watery and airy. Or as moveable, stable and dual-natured. They also have an associated Gun, satvik, rajasik or tamasik. These words do not literally mean water, fire etc but indicate qualities.

Scorpio is a watery sign, ruled by Mars and is a stable/fixed sign. It is Rajasic in nature. It might seem that these words are contradictory but they describe different aspects of the sign. Rashi is the apt Sanskrit word for sign, which means a ‘collection’, the sign is a collection of qualities. If your birth Moon is placed in Scorpio you are a very different personality. You are aware and in control of the powers of your astral self, specifically the pran-mai-kosh.

Moon in Scorpio into the subconscious

Raja-gun means that the you feel emotionally satisfied only when you are in motion. This motion is generally internal, invisible in Scorpio. You are constantly thinking/ feeling new strategies within. You have the entire summary of your past/ present/ future/ parallel lives to explore and use within yourself. You drill down into your own subconscious mind ever in search of resources. You can also penetrate into the minds of their family/ friends/ enemies too with this same intensity and focus. You observe and intuit highly personal information about others. This makes you dangerous and people tend to be rather uncomfortable around you.

Mars rules this sign. He demonstrates his challenging, explosive, penetrating, forceful, etc characteristics here too. Here he will use emotions, the aura, astral self, movement of pran, power of intention etc as his weapons to attack your own subconscious and also other’s. These attacks are usually invisible to the eye. He will control the ‘musculature’ and strength, not of the physical body but of the astral body. He will decide and also manipulate the structure of the naadi/energy channels and the vitality/pran flowing through. He gives you power to consciously control pran!

Now the Moon in the horoscope represents the physical mother, maternal figures, initial schooling, childhood home, nurturing and nutrition. All these aspects of life will reflect these similar Scorpio traits of change.

The natural eighth of the zodiac. So expect a lot of emotional turmoil for yourself and also in your surroundings triggered by your mere presence. You are emotionally ready for any shocking catastrophic change. You thrive on them!

Scorpio is a stable/ fixed sign. This means you have tremendous will power, you can focus on the essential. Mars uses the unfathomable resources of the entire sookshma-sharir, ie the subtle body, with single-minded focus. He is a hunter, a predator of the astral world. If anyone crosses you, you target the emotions. Thus your language is generally incisive, critical, harsh, vindictive, blaming and revengeful. You will try to subconsciously dominate always. Moon in Scorpio creates moodiness and discontent. He responds to threats, real or imagined, with an attack on the astral/ emotional self.

Water is fluid, it can take on different shapes depending on the vessel. As a Scorpio-birth Moon, you are determined in your ideas of dominating others, you command. And your will to implement these ideas is also constant (fixed sign). However you will use different strategies as you are also fluid. You will adopt all psychological, mental, emotional, astral tools at your disposal, highly imaginative. You can in turn become a fluid water, turn into solid ice or scalding steam. The focus and the ability to use, to crush, to command if necessary. And extremely skilled. You does not trust anyone deeply. Mars is made for domination. So you feel satisfaction only when you can dominate everyone around you emotionally. Scorpios have an emotional need to be in control.

Moon in Scorpio into the subconscious

Or imagine water flowing in a network of pipes. It can be shut down in some and forced into other pipes. Now Mars with focussed will has the skill to consciously regulate the movement of pran/vital energy on which the body/mind works. This ability is important for spiritual progress. He will be ultimately shutting down the body’s other naadis and sending all the pran you take in only into the Sushumna. Evolved Scorpios engaged in regular spiritual practice can do this more easily. They can manipulate pran in the bodies of other people also. They can heal as well as hurt with this ability they possess. So becoming energy-healers, shamans, tantrik etc is natural to them.

Mars creates the body which experiences and also the environment which is experienced. As the natural ruler of the 1st Aries, he creates the physical body/world around you. And as the natural ruler of the 8th Scorpio, he creates the astral body/world surrounding you. He is birth, death and rebirth. Death is as vital a process as birth. Death does not mean and end, it simply means a fresh start, a transformation.

Scorpio controls reproductive and regenerative ability of the body. You are experimental and exploratory by nature. Affairs before marriage and during marriage are possible. In marriage there exists some dissatisfaction because the two have different ideas related to sensual pleasures. The partner prefers outgoing boisterous energy, eg family group type activities. Scorpio-Moon prefers secret domination and a bit of tension in marriage. Also will not express his real emotions ever. Scorpio also rules over the reproductive organs and the act of childbirth. Can be a good doctor/ surgeon.

Reconstructive and destructive events often occur in the life of Scorpio-Moon placements. You accept change in your own personality and surroundings in both the physical and emotional contexts. You have a very high level of confidence in traumatic and emotional situations. Scorpio is aware. It has an internal maturity of both maternal/ paternal emotions. It also has the necessary emotional readiness to interact with public, society and foreign elements. So it is are quite capable of facing any situation in life with perfect composure.

A watery sign has considerable intuition, it uses the resources of its astral self naturally, spontaneously and more often. The sign has access to astral selves of other people too. Their interaction is more on the astral levels than the physical levels. If you meet someone who has significant number of planets in the watery signs, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces you ‘feel’ the interaction more. The auras interact with more intensity. If you are a watery Moon and your best friend too, you might notice being together without talking for long periods but then feeling like you have had entire conversations in silence. The aura exchanges information more easily in watery signs.

Watery signs are about ‘rhythm’, there is a distinct ebb and rise in your every action. Water also has depth, things move unseen, gather force till they explode like underwater volcanoes. Just like hydraulics which uses the power of fluids, Scorpio uses the targeted power of the fluid astral self in a very targeted and dangerous manner. Watery depths conceal secrets. Secrets about oneself and of other people are known to the Scorpios. And they will use them in unexpected force to dominate.

Moon in Scorpio into the subconscious

Now some astrologers completely forget to study about the Nakshatra, lunar mansions. If you want to perfect your readings, you have to learn the Nakshtra in detail. It will make your understanding of the D-9 Navamsha divisional charts also easier. Scorpio consists of 3 lunar mansions.

Vishakha – influenced by Jupiter. It uses concealed sources of wisdom to create changes to itself and its surroundings. There are rhythmic large surges in growth. Something like cell division? To grow there is first the pain of division. Desires to learn and then teach too. Is capable of healing type of pranic manipulation and the occasional kindness. A healer doctor.

Anuradha – influenced by Saturn. This lunar mansion uses secrets to resist dangers. It transforms itself by disciplined response to emotional challenges. Here the role of karmic influences in higher and the explosions of Mars’s energy are regulated. You cannot rest, there are so many duties lined up. You need to work. A doctor who works in the trauma emergency ward?

Jeyshtha – influenced by Mercury. Highly intelligent, inventive and skilful of the three. This naksahtra born are intelligent, analytical, calculative and communicative. However they will communicate nil iIf they wish to hurt someone, they know the exact precise amount of cutting words to use. Can directly confront with single minded force, refutes other’s ideas. Can be a good investigative or detective agent. Understands the criminal mind very well. Birth Moon in the very last degrees of Jeyshtha means it is a Gandant birth with its own set of issues.

Moon in debilitation. The energy of the Scorpio environment is completely unmatched to the Moon’s nature. For a Scorpio Moon to be successful the ascendant sign/lord should be well placed. The Mars should be capable of giving benefic effect. And such a Moon should be influenced by benefic and auspicious planets. Scorpio is a highly esoteric rashi. If you are a Scorpio-birth Moon, choose to explore your inner spirituality. You will be great here.

Here you are aware of the biggest fragility of of the human being. The sookshma-sharir, the subtle body. You are aware of deepest emotional astral needs, which everyone keeps secret. Acknowledge to yourself your own frailty. What you do with this knowledge, decide for yourself. This is the challenge.

If you learn to trust your own entire self, trust the conscious and the sub-conscious both. The sub-conscious mind is not a challenge that you annihilate with brute force! Yes, ultimately you will annihilate your self so that you can create yourself anew but if you try to understand the process and the reasons it will be more fulfilling. The natural Moksh trikon is created using the energies of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. These three signs are the most mysterious of the twelve. In Scorpio, secrets and hidden forces are used to liberate the soul from the illusion of the manifested Universe.

Birth Moon in Pisces, an analysis in emotions

Dreamy Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac ruled by the graha of expansion, Jupiter. Watery, fathomless and full of life within. It’s two fish are in continual movement, exactly and equally, in opposite directions. Moon in Pisces is an esoteric placement, here you are the emotional, astral, mental and ‘other’ summary of the entire zodiac. You represent the end of a cycle and the learnings hereof. Highly compassionate, highly sensitive, you understand. You may not be so articulate with words but you are deeply aware of your and the other’s emotions all the time.

Birth Moon in Pisces, an analysis in emotions

It can get tiring.

Jupiter loves to continually expand without any limits, he is universal in his benevolence. Moon wants rhythmic movements and is rooted in the homeland tradition. Emotionally caught between these two, you tend to feel pulled in two directions, or at times quite confused. This emotional two-minds causes physical stress. If in this, you get caught in intellectually demanding situations where you are required to impose your personality, the stress can even make you physically sick! You are dual-natured, the two fish in equal and opposite directions. So you can instinctively access emotional context in situations. But to bring your Moon to focus and actually act you need strong benefic influences. Else you will be seen to be wavering, indecisive, vague and worse, tricky and unreliable.

You never rest.

Deep sleep period is comparatively less so you feel tired. The soul can recharge itself only in the Sushupti stage of existence. The dreaming phase is quite happening with astral travel and other similar karmic demands made on your person. You are formidable in the Swapna avastha, you can contact other dimensions, spirits, teachers and also beings who drain your energy. You are kind, selfless, willing to help others. You can sacrifice yourself for others, this mind-set is even more damaging as you give away of your energy. Allowing yourself to be a channel for the energies and emotions of others, you are constantly absorbing energy. If not anchored by benefic planets, you can drown in a sea of emotions.

You give.

You are well-off, can earn money through your own efforts. You also give away, donations to temples, philosophical causes, orphanages etc.

You like spending time with children and also the aged. Generous, you give them your time and emotional support. You like the quiet and are unobtrusive and dislike being in the lime-light. You are the silent hard worker in the background. Creative arts, reading books, things that you can do in relative quiet. You don’t just ‘read’, your imagination literally recreates the scene in your mind’s eye. A writer of abstract topics or a painter drawn to nature, you require calm surroundings. Even as an exercise, your favourite would be swimming! If you are put in a room-full of noise, hectic activity and lots of people you get uncomfortable. You are highly sensitive to auras. You are easily disturbed emotionally, you cannot resist pressure. You look for ways to get out of stressful situations. Especially PIsces-Moon women tend to cry silently and they have large liquid attractive eyes!

You are a good teacher, you know instinctively how to encourage your students to think for themselves. You genuinely care about inspiring them. Philosophical or esoteric subjects are your forte. If you are a professional you try to get your juniors interested in the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of the practical job. You are a mentor. You appreciate the inner subtle dynamics of practical things and want others to understand them too. Your parenting style is also that of a benevolent teacher. You let your child explore creativity and also gift him with a foundation of spirituality/philosophy. The child shares a strong bond with his Pisces-Moon parent.

There is often a difficult relationship with both the parents. Perhaps parents may have argued in front of your child-self, creating life-time impressions. But there is an emotional rift. You do not get on well with your teachers either, you often know more than they do. You know yourself to be intelligent and worthy but you do not get that validation from these elders. Leo is placed 6th from Pisces, so if you have too many planets placed here you will suffer emotional pain. You tend to be absent-minded about material things but you always remember emotional pain from the past. It hits back with that same intensity. Emotional frustration is possible as you never get satisfaction in your relationships. No other sign can match the emotional depths of Pisces. Also this reliving of past emotions is not good for emotional/ physical health. Sun’s Mahadasha will occur slightly after mid-life and here is a potential period of long-term medical conditions.

Birth Moon in Pisces, an analysis in emotions

You might look healthy and robust but you are not.

Venus Mahadasha is a 20yr long period where you will go through turbulence, this will come before middle age. Venus is the ruler of the signs placed 3rd and 8th from Pisces. Both these places can indicate serious problems. (Read the earlier posts on the 3rd and 8th houses). In this period you will suddenly enter into relationships which will cause upheaval on the emotional fronts.

The Moon Mahadasha in the Vimshottari system will also cause health problems which will primarily originate from the emotional context.

The emotional context of your spouse is Mercury-Virgo, 7th from Pisces. In a life-partnership it is essential that the two be compatible not similar. If both are the same, they, as a unit, will be taken advantage of by others. So they have to be fill-in-the-blanks for each other. A dreamy Pisces needs the qualities of an analytical Virgo in the spouse to take care of the regular material life. Even if your spouse is actually not a Virgo/Mercury, he will express some of those qualities after getting married to you. The solution is to let your spouse display his Mercury-traits outside the house. This will mean that he will have lesser contribution within the house. But it will help you as this gives him an outlet and you do not suffer.

You do not concentrate, you flow.

Travelling, seeing new things, experiencing them. Women especially love the anonymity that travel affords. This travel can be physical, astral, or even via imagination. Divert your creative energies, write a book!

Addictions are possible with this placement. So if this Moon is badly placed find your emotional anchor as early in life as possible. (Libra ascendants look out!). Best would be to start some personal spiritual practice. You are drawn to abstract dreamy, fluid, watery things. The private spiritual, meditation and solitude help you. Your enjoyment of things is on the emotional plane rather than the intellectual. You do not like being hurt emotionally yourself and neither do you like hurting others. You can go to any extent to avoid both of these things. You are of a pliable nature and cannot say ‘no’. Highly romantic in nature. This puts you in uncomfortable positions often and you can be easily dominated by your loved one.

Try and learn to put your personal emotions first.

You should understand one thing, others do not feel pain as deeply as you do. Stop feeling for others what they don’t feel for themselves. This is hyper-sensitivity causes you needless pain.

Three Nakshatra, lunar mansions, make up this sign, Purva-bhadrapada, Uttara-bhadrapada and Revati. These three are among the most sensitive sections of the zodiac. The very last degrees of Revati are the Gandant, the gap between watery-fiery signs. Birth in the Gandant will cause typical problems which require attention immediately after birth. Even if someone from your family dies with the Moon in these three Nakshatras it requires special rituals, it is the end of the zodiac.

Pisces is a watery, dual natured sign, the end of the zodiac. So Moon in Pisces Meen rashi is emotionally brilliant, intelligent, imaginative, intuitive, philosophical but whether all this remains in the astral realms or gets converted into the material realm depends on the ascendant sign, ascendant lord and the malefic/benefic influences on him in your horoscope.

Birth Moon in the watery signs, Cancer Scorpio Pisces

People born with Moon in the watery signs, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces pride themselves on being psychic, sensitive, intuitive and that they ‘channelise’ energy. Which is quite true, but the real thing is completely different. There is always a heavy price to be paid for this ‘sensitivity’. If you are more sensitive to the astral you lose the vitality of the physical.

Water is connected to the Moon in so many ways. The tides of the sea, the movement of blood in our bodies and the sap movements in trees are all connected to the movements of the Moon. Water is the source of all life. From the instant of our real birth as a fertilised egg within our mother’s womb we float in liquid. Our physical death and the Anteyshti, the last correct action, is not complete till the cremation ashes/asti are immersed in flowing river/sea.

Birth Moon in the watery signs, Cancer Scorpio Pisces.jpg

We always flow. Life is series of inter-connected flowing events through space and time. When the body reaches its full potential, it is discarded. The soul then takes a brief rest and again occupies a new one. This intervening period is also under the control of the Moon, as the soul moves to a dimension called Chandra-lok (realm of the Moon) for a time before taking its new birth.

And then what is life without ‘emotions’? Moon is the agent of the mind. The mind is the tattva which feels emotions. The cycles of happiness and sadness, hope and despair are all of the Moon. Water gets agitated and flows out in ripples, then again stills and is peaceful. Unknown depths and secrets within. The sun total of your existence throughout numerous lives.

The Moon is always present as the link between opposites, spirit-material, reality-illusion, birth-death and death-rebirth. He connects everything.

The three watery signs make up the natural Moksh trikon.

You plant a seed. It takes in the power of the Sun through the Moon. A seed without water will not germinate. Moon’s reflection of the Sun’s energy is life-giving. The Sun by himself is a natural malefic! Moon is the most important determinant in a chart. If he is strong and well balanced he can draw in energy from the Sun more effectively. He tempers the dry destructive heat of the Sun and makes it more amenable to Life. We Indian astrologers give prime importance to the Moon sign not the Sun sign. The Sun’s power cannot be used directly. The Sun is self-identity, self-ego, sense of individuality, the soul. The Moon is in-charge of building the mind and the body as an appropriate house for the soul. It is very personal. He makes the mind/body capable of handling and channeling the soul’s power. In the chart the Moon represents the alchemical power of the body/mind to accept and use the energy derived of the Sun and the other planets.

Now if the Moon can construct, he can also destroy. If he is is trouble, under malefic influence, debilitated, in challenging placements, in the dusham-sthan, houses 6th, the 8th and the 12th (to some extent the 3rd also), the other face of the Moon will occasionally be seen. He will cause trouble, he can deny nutrition, deny nurture, deny roots, deny the comfort of a home, deny the security of a mother’s love and cause the emotions to dominate the mental process/intelligence. The Moon represents your emotional security issues.

If your Moon is placed in a watery sign you will definitely be a psychic, sensitive to energy but you will also be highly vulnerable. Unless your chart has support from other planets who protect such a Moon. The energies of such a Moon are stronger when they can flow. What he does with this strength at his command depends on your entire horoscope. If he is in trouble, you will face problems which disturb your emotional stability and also your physical structure. You will be extra-sensitive to emotions often from unseen forces. You tend to take things ‘personally’. Eg You will pick up nuances in the speech, in actions, in the behaviour of others, the unseen cues which they give away and feel intense emotional hurt. You will pick up the information from the aura which never lies. Other’s will think this to be your ‘fancy’ and wild imagination. Eg if you are infatuated with someone and you pick up indifference from his aura you will be traumatised for a few days. High level of sensitivity to certain things can be problematic. There is a reason why ‘other’ senses are normally absent. If you cannot make intelligent use of these extrasensory cues it is better that you do not ‘see’ them in the first place.

Birth Moon in the watery signs, Cancer Scorpio Pisces

Now for those sensitive ones, there is another problem. The Moon controls emotional and behavioural responses. He moves very rapidly, crossing one sign in 2.25days. His nature changes as per the sign /house he is transiting at the moment. And also as per the changing aspects of other planets on him. Fast moving planets give fast changeable results. So sensitive ‘watery’ Moon people are always under the influence of varying emotions, prone to ‘mood swings’.

Moon placed in the three watery signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces works differently but perhaps in the same way essentially. These three signs are watery movement and they are different aspects of flow. Cancer is a moveable sign, Moon himself rules it, it is his swa-kshetra. Scorpio is a still sign owned by Mars and the sign of debilitation for the Moon. Pisces is Jupiter’s sign, dual-natured, two fishes moving in equal opposite directions. All three are deeply connected to emotions and the astral self. Common traits are that they are mysterious, even to themselves. They are emotionally insecure in some way or the other. Water needs the support of a jug, else it just spreads out any way! Deep sleep is often denied to them as they work out their karma in the dream state. They may look healthy and robust but often are not. Deeply sensitive and terrible in their own ways, because they are themselves not aware of what they might do, to what extent they might go to. They have great astral /spiritual strength. There will be diseases which will drag on long-term and have slow recovery times. The Moon Mahadasha will be generally difficult and cause health problems.

If you have watery Moons in your friend-circle observe them, they make good subjects as the rate of change is high. Or you are one yourself, do pay attention to your spiritual, emotional and physical health.

Real Health benefits of the Surya namaskar

When it comes to exercise, motivation is a must. You might have thought of trying out the Surya-namaskar from my pervious post. When you do the Surya-namaskar regularly and faithfully with intention the entire body/mind benefits. Ideally you should do enough sets so that the body has a light perspiration. But right now begin slow.

(I searched the internet videos for the correct version of the Surya namaskar, it is this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt9eeXo5YPk  From 4:41 sec to 5:25 sec is the ideal Surya-namaskar sequence of the 10 postures. Except do not hold the ‘downward dog’ position for 5 deep breaths as he mentions.)

Real Health benefits of the Surya namaskar

The set of 10 yogic postures is the classical Surya-namaskar. A breathing pattern has to be followed of inhaling (purak), exhaling (rechak) and holding the breath (kumbhak). And an associated mantra has to be recited mentally as you perform each posture of the set. Each posture works to set your body and mind in its perfect alignment. I am not using the names of the individual Yog-asan, just writing what will happen as you perform them,Starting posture – To begin with, you will stand straight, facing the east, palms folded in the Namaskar position, looking at the rising Sun and recite the Mantras which are to be said out aloud.

First posture – The palms in the namaskar position are raised vertically upwards and your eyesight follows them. The neck and waist has to be stiffened as the entire body has to be vertical and in a straight line. If you have round shoulders or a stoop in your back, you will feel these areas straining and stretching. The entire body stretches out. Deep breathing is required so if you are not used to deep conscious breathing you will feel your lungs and diaphragm work. The palms have to be pressed against each other slightly so a slight pressure on your entire arm till tip of fingers will be felt. Hold yourself erect and inhale deeply, hold the breath.

Second posture – Bending down with the knees straight. The palms touch the ground on both sides of the feet and the head touches the knees. The muscles of the calves, thighs, buttocks, hips, waist, back and spine are stretched out. You will feel the strain. Go very slow, if you are unfit you might black-out as all the air in your lungs is forced out. The muscles joining your shoulders and back will feel the strain. The muscles of the abdomen and waist will be pulled in. The kidneys are activated here. The solar plexus is stimulated. You won’t be able to do it perfectly at the first attempt so bend as much as you can comfortably, do not strain.

Third posture – Touching the tips of the fingers to the ground and moving the neck to look straight in the front. This activates in addition the neck, throat muscles and the shoulders. If you are suffering from stiff neck or cervical area problems, go slow here. Here you inhale. Do as much as you can without straining, this exercise will build up strength and also reduce neck/chin fat.

Fourth posture – As you jump backwards you are exhaling. And the rest of this posture is done in the ‘kumbhak’, you ‘hold’ breath. You have exhaled and there is no air in your lungs. You are pulling your abdomen in. The weight of the whole body is on your palms and toes. The wrists arms and feet/ankles bear the maximum pressure here. Also the abdomen and waist, the buttocks and the thighs. This reduces abdominal fat. This is the real ‘plank exercise’. You might not be able to do it perfectly so you can touch your body to the ground in the initial stages.

Fifth posture – Now you inhale. this is the classical snake posture. The back is curved and look up at the sky. The weight of the whole body is on the arms. Here the neck, arms and the chest benefit. The size of the abdomen will decrease and that of the chest will increase till the perfect proportion is achieved. All liver, spleen and intestinal complaints will disappear.

Sixth posture – Here you are exhale. Your body makes a triangle with your buttocks as the highest upward point. You exhale. The palms and the feet are placed flat on the ground. The muscles of the feet, calves, waist, abdomen, back, neck and upper arms are exercised. This will reduce abdominal fat. Abdominal fat is the root cause of ill-health in majority of humans.

Seventh posture – As you jump forwards you inhale and you touch your finger-tips to the sides of your feet, look straight forwards. Same as the third posture.

Eighth posture – Same as the second posture. You exhale.

Ninth posture – same as the first posture. You inhale.

Tenth posture – Same as the starting posture. You mentally recite the last posture mantra. “Om Bhaskaraya Namah”

Real Health benefits of the Surya namaskar

This is a full body workout. The entire musculature of the body benefits. The neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, back, chest muscles, abdomen, thighs, calves and ankles. The body skeleton, the joints all benefit. Most important the fluid movement of the 10 postures, fully stretch and compress the spine. This frees you from back-ache forever. Rheumatic tendencies are arrested. The ligaments and tendons of the entire body are overhauled and made to work properly.

The entire digestive system benefits, the stomach, liver, pancreas, intestines. Better digestion and absorption of food and regular bowel movements are the first step to a healthier life. As the back strengthens, the kidneys also benefit. The nervous system is invigorated. The brain, spinal cord and the functional parts of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Fogginess, mental fatigue, forgetfulness and other forms of mental stress are gradually removed. The intellect and the mind shine with energy. The sense organs also seem more sharp.

The circulatory system undergoes a systematic overhaul. The pumping of the heart improves. The blood circulation improves, this is very important as blood brings nutrients and flushes toxins from every part of the body. Deep breathing improves the lungs, the lung capacity and the stamina. The throat muscles are energised by the continuous compression and extension movements. Thyroid function improves. Similarly the other endocrine glands in the body are stimulated increasing health. This movement of the neck improves the circulation to the head so the hair and scalp health improves. The senses of hearing, seeing, smelling and tasting remain sharp till old age.

You are supposed to work out till you lightly perspire. This removes toxins, more important in higher altitudes where people do-not sweat naturally. A healthy skin absorbs more pran/vital energy directly from the Universe and it also glows with health.

In women, if she has been doing Surya-namaskar regularly it helps in all problems related to menstrual cycle, pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum recovery. During pregnancy it will reduce nausea and similar uncomfortable problems. Feminine charm, bust, body shape etc remains attractive, as the entire body muscles develop in a proportionate way. In men, masculine attractiveness is enhanced. Excess fat is dislodged from those difficult areas of abdomen, thighs, chin, saggy arms are corrected. Obesity will reduce. Posture related problems are corrected. In growing children the height of the body will be increased. Immunity increases. Gradually you feel more energetic and youthful. More confident, you feel capable and poised, ready for life!

Real Health benefits of the Surya namaskar

Healthy old age is a blessing which very few people in this modern age enjoy. The Surya-namaskar is the best way of postponing age as it rids the body/ mind of the products of decay/ damage/ degeneration of the body. It links you to the Sun, the source of all life. If you do Surya-namaskar with a combination of satvik food your food intake will reduce. This means vegetarian food, vegetables, rice, millets, pulses, desi cow milk and ghee made from desi cow milk. No heavy spices, no oily food, no stimulants.

By now you must be thinking that I am exaggerating. But I am not! You are using the power of the Sun, your mantra and your intention and reforging your body, breath and mind. Do your Surya-namskar for a few months regularly and then see the change in yourself. And others will also notice the healthier you. You are in control. You decide. If you practice you will gain.I wrote this ‘biology’ post on purpose, so that you read the health benefits and they register in your mind. If you are still in your teens, adopt the Surya-namaskar for a life-time of health. You will never suffer even the minor complaints of fever and cold. If you have children, make sure that they perform it, you are gifting them a life-time of health and vitality. And even if you are older or unwell, try some of the postures in whatever slow imperfect way you can. Never strain the body, if you have been unwell/ lazy for 10yrs you can’t expect the perfect set on the first day. It will take 6 months of slow committed practice, it is ok. Congratulate yourself that you have started at least.

You can start at any age. It requires no kit, no expense, not much space. Even if you make mistakes initially it is ok. The Asans will self-correct gradually. Just remember to not strain, if you feel strain/pain stop immediately, Go slow. If you cannot do it at sunrise, do it at anytime of the day (2hrs after meals, as empty stomach is essential). But do it. Secure your health, effectiveness and longevity.

Real Health benefits of the Surya namaskar

My brother goes to a Yog-asan class. There is a very over-weight lady too there. The trainer is really good and wanted to get this lady started on Surya-namaskar. The poor lady could not bend, forget anything else. But the trainer was like, ‘do how much every tiny movement you can from the set, the body will loosen up with time’. It was a struggle for her, but she and the trainer persevered, a tiny bit every-day. By the end of 2 months, the lady did manage to bend enough to touch her own feet, and also shed a few kgs, an amazing achievement! So however physically unfit you actually are or believe yourself to be, all you need a good teacher to guide/ motivate and the Surya-namaskar. Reclaim your health!

Surya namaskar is an all-in-one remedy

Everyone knows about the Surya-namaskar sequence. This is a Yog-Asan, yogic posture which we all should perform everyday from the age of 6yrs onwards regularly. It is the right of every human to be healthy and this Yogasan is the foundation of your life-time health. Here I list out things which will add energy to your practice.

Surya namaskar is an all-in-one remedy

Use the power of the rising Sun. Do your Surya-namaskar in the early morning, facing the east. Looking at the rising sun is ideal. If your house has a balcony do it there, where fresh air can touch your body. Or in a park? Or at least open the windows of your room so that fresh air can touch your body/mind. Now we live in cities so seeing the rising sun may not be possible. So on the East wall of your room, put a nice photo of the rising Sun, your favourite deity, source of faith, Shri yantra? or at least paint that wall in light yellowish-orangish, the color of the radiant rising Sun. This will give your mind an object to concentrate on. Gradually will give you the ability to silence the mind’s continuous chattering and increase your mental strength/ability.

You will need a flat horizontal non slippery surface. A cotton mat is traditionally used, but you should use whatever you are comfortable with. Wear minimum possible cotton clothing. Ensure that the clothes do not interfere with the body’s freedom of movement. Do not eat, empty stomach is necessary.

A set of 10 yogic postures = 1 Suryanamaskar. Start with 3 sets daily and increase 1 set per week. Maximum is 108 sets, do not increase beyond that. Doing 108 sets will take about 1hr 15 mins which is not realistic in today’s life. So fix some figure in your mind, as a maximum of 27 or 54, but do it everyday.

This is a complete physical exercise, a spiritual exercise and a pranic exercise. You strengthen your entire body from the head to the feet and the tips of your fingers. You improve your sensory organs. You make all the fluids in your body move. You will increase the volume, quality and regular flow of pran in your nadis. And finally you strengthen your mind and will power.

Surya namaskar is an all-in-one remedy

You are doing 3 things here.

  1. Exercising your physical body in a series of 10 interconnected yogic postures. You are using the muscles of your entire body. As the muscles work effectively they positively influence the other organs near them. So muscular health is essential for complete body health.
  2. Exercising your pran/vital energy movements in your naadi strucutre by a fixed sequence of breath in and breath out sequence. Each of the 10 postures is linked to either exhale or inhale, and the entire sequence goes fluidly. Simple logic is when you extend the body you inhale and when you contract the body you exhale. Always breathe through your nose, never open the mouth. First focus on getting the muscular movement perfectly, the breath will automatically sync later. The sync comes slowly with practice. (Ideally the 10 postures of the Surya namaskar are performed in 3 complete breaths!)
  3. Adding the power of Surya mantra to all this. There are a set of 10 mantra-s, one for each yogic posture in the sequence. This is the real power of the Yog-asan. Breathing without a mantra makes the whole thing tamasic. You will get excellent physical body but no spiritual benefit. Something like musclebound gym-crazy young men who do not ‘sparkle’ with ‘inner light’. You should add the mantras to the postures after you have got the muscle movement and the breath sync. Maybe after 1-2 months.

I searched the internet videos for the correct version of the Surya namaskar, it is this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt9eeXo5YPk  From 4:41 sec to 5:25 sec is the ideal Suryanamaskar sequence of the 10 postures. Except that there is no requirement to hold the ‘downward dog’ position for 5 deep breaths as he mentions. The entire Suryanamaskar continues in a fluid sequence of 10 postures, no ‘holding’ any pose. In the video the young man is in superb physical condition and is a teacher himself so don’t feel disheartened!

Surya namaskar is an all-in-one remedy

You are exercising for yourself and not competing with the young man in the video. I have seen people get enthusiastic about exercise and then in a few days they get demotivated and never exercise again. The fault is with the trainers.

  • Always remember, exercise should be in proportion to one’s own strength.
  • It should be regular and continuous to be of benefit. You do only 3 sets per day, but do them. They will not be perfect, it is ok.
  • Exercise should be within your physical limit, ie after doing it you should feel refreshed and energetic not tired out. If you are feeling tired, reduce the intensity or the duration.
  • Don’t compare yourself to your younger self. (I used to go to the gym for 2 hrs everyday in my 20s. At the age of 29yrs I looked like a 17yrs old often confusing people. Now I can’t do that much exercise. Accepted!)
  • You are not perfect in your practice now, but you are doing it regularly that is most important.
  • At the beginning of this ‘body/mind reconstruction exercise’, there is bound to be some discouragement and pain as unused muscles are forced to move. But this has to be gone through.

So practice slowly at your own pace, regularly, don’t get lazy after all this, it is just for 5 mins! Suryanamaskar are done quite slowly at first. First you have to get the physical movements correct. When you practice slowly, you will know which part of your body is under strain. When you change posture which bones creak. And slow movements will help this straining creaking body parts gradually build strength. You are doing this for yourself.

Then the mind. While doing the sets, do not let your mind wander. Your mind as well as body need discipline. You have to focus on the Sun and on your own body. Look at the Sun with your eyes. Intend that the energy of the Sun enters your body parts which are moving. We want increased pran moving in the body, this is possible only by the power of the focussed mind. As you breathe in visualise gold/silver energy entering you, energising you, making you one with the Sun. This is also an exercise for the mind.

Surya namaskar is an all-in-one remedy

Now the mantra. Before beginning your practice you are required to recite this, ‘Om Hraang Hreeng Hroung sah Suryaya namah”. Or as the second option, “Om Mitra Ravi Surya Bhanu Khaga Pushna Hiranyagarbha Marich Aditya Bhaskarya namah Om”. Speaking aloud, voice is very important. When you speak these words you are exercising your vocal cords and setting the tone for your entire exercise. Breathe deeply a few times. This you can do from the first day itself. Then ten basic mantra are to be recited in your mind, once per posture, these are

  1. Om Mitraya namah
  2. Om Ravaye namah
  3. Om Suryaya namah
  4. Om Bhanave namah
  5. Om Khagaya namah
  6. Om Pushnaye namah
  7. Om Hiranyagarbhaya namah
  8. Om Marichaye namah
  9. Om Adityaya namah
  10. Om Bhaskarya namah

Add these mantras to your posture and breath only after you have gained confidence, maybe 1-2 months later. Don’t complicate things for yourself at the start. If you have no faith in Sanskrit and Mantra, do not recite them. But a Yog-asan done without a mantra remains tamasic, it gives only physical strength no inner fire. So you will have to at least intentionally recite So-ham. ‘So’ mentally as you breathe in and ‘hum’ mentally as you breathe out. So-ham is also a mantra.

So start in whatever slow imperfect way you can, it will take only 5 mins of your time initially. Evaluate yourself after 21days. After this self-motivation will come in. And in a few months you won’t believe the change this will bring in you. Perfection comes with regular practice. (If you are already physically damaged or ill, do consult your healthcare professional before doing them. These are quite strenuous and vigorous movements.)

Now for women. Women must perform Surya namaskar. In Indian cities, you see young women in severely unhealthy states. If the woman is physically/ mentally /spiritually ill, the entire house suffers. She is the centre around which our families and our societies both revolve. If she is healthy the nation will be healthy. Surya namaskar is the ideal three-in-one way to remain forever fit. Women go through two physically challenging events in their lives, one at the age of 12yrs as the monthly cycle starts and then at the age of 51yrs when it stops. Also the monthly 5day cycle is physically exhausting. As the girl-child starts Surya-namaskar at the age of 6yrs and continues for a life-time she will never face any problems related to this aspect of the female life ever. It is a guarantee.

Women are exempted for the 5 days of their monthly cycle, they should rest. During pregnancy the practice has to be stopped. But she should not break her habit of standing before the rising Sun. Mantra-s can be recited. Some light warm-up stretching types of movements recommended for pregnant women can be done. After delivery do not perform Surya-namaskars for 3 months. After this, if the medical professional agrees, can start with 3 sets and gradually increase.

Suryanamaskar are the complete exercise for your mind body and soul. You will discipline your body, your breath and your mind over time. Give yourself these 5-10 mins daily and see the change in yourself as you draw in the energy of the Rising Sun into yourself.

Part 2 continued here.

Surya namaskar is an all-in-one remedy

Marma points, Heal your body yourself.

This is one of the most secretive part of Ayurved. There are very few texts and very few of them are in public domain. There are a few Vaidya /Ayurved-acharya (Ayurvedic doctors) families in South India (mainly Tamil nadu and Kerala) and some ancient brahmin families in Uttarakhand, who have these books and techniques as family secrets. Some of these books are ancient, still on birch-wood/Bhoj-patra. The ancient Rishi-s who have written on this topic are Sushurt, Vaagbhatt and Agastya.

Marma मर्मन् is a Sanskrit word meaning, articulation, weak point, hidden weakness, sensitive spot, quick acting, vital organ, hidden, anything that requires protection and needs to be concealed. There are 108 Marma points in the human body. 108 is the ‘magic’ number of Sanatan Dharma/Hinduism!

Marma points, Heal your body yourself.

There are a quite few Marma-chikitsa centers who offer therapy on the Marma points for deep healing, inner healing, removal of blocks etc. Be careful about these centers. Marma chikitsa, ie medical treatment using the Marma points, is a very useful and highly effective way to cure several incurable body/ mind conditions. If you are sure about the credentials of your Marma chikitsa center, (you can check out where the Vaidya-s have learnt it, check past patients experiences), then you should get a therapy done. It will help immensely, it is rather like magic sometimes! They use targeted pressure using massage and specific combinations of ayurvedic oils to manipulate the Marma points. It is a very precise science, not intuition, so be careful of ‘intuitive healers’ and such. If you are not sure about the credentials of the Vaidya-s, then it is advisable to not mess with your Marma points.

These Marma points are the vulnerable points of your body. Of the 108 points, 64 are highly vulnerable, getting hit/ cut here can cause death. There are knots of naadis which carry vital energy/pran, located under these Marma points, thus their extreme sensitivity. Indian fighting techniques like Kalari (which still survives in Southern India), Marma points are used to kill. Knowledge of Marma is integral to the science of the Living Ayurved and the science of War Dhanurvidya, both.

Marma points are of 6 types depending on which parts of the body they ‘join’.

  • Mamsa मांस marma – where muscles join
  • Asthi अस्ति marma – where bones join
  • Snyau स्नायु marma – tendons join here
  • Dhamni धमनि marma – where arteries join
  • Shira सिरा marma – where veins join
  • Sandhi सन्धि marma – where the major limbs of the body join

The size of a Marma point can be variable. Some are the size of a grain of rice, while some are the size of your palm. Even if you get hit on a Marma point it causes excruciating pain as the pran/ vital energy movement in the naadi is affected severely. The three elements of the body, the tri-dosh, vaat, kapha, pitta go out of balance and the body /mind goes into shock. There may be excessive bleeding or even no bleeding as basically the naadi-s are damaged. The flow of the pran (all five types of pran), in the whole body is disturbed. This is very dangerous. Being hit on some points will be instantly fatal, some will cause crippling effects and some will cause injury, all will hurt. In some marma points, if the hurt is caused by a weapon, removal of the stuck weapon will cause death. Again, Marmas were used to kill and heal, both.

Marma points, Heal your body yourself.

Writing in details is not possible in this post, and I am not a Vaidya. (If you are seriously unwell then you need to get medical help from a proper professional).  Here are some tips on small but significant things you can do at home for your own healing using the concepts of Marma. And also remember to protect these body parts from being hit/injured.

The most important Marma point of the body is the navel. The center of your entire body. A direct hit here can be fatal. Be very careful of your navel. Put a few drops of warm coconut oil in your navel every night, very gently massage this area. Do it for 21 days and see for yourself.

(Make sure you use only edible coconut oil for all this gentle massage stuff at home. It should be clearly marked ‘edible’. No mixed oils, no mineral oils, no chemical ingredients. Massage means a very gentle rubbing, no heavy pressure. Regular gentle circular motions, that is it. These are highly sensitive points.)

The center of the forehead, the location of your third eye chakra. I still remember when in school someone clicked their fingers on my forehead. I literally saw stars and breathing was disturbed. Don’t let anyone hit you here. Don’t even let random people touch you here! Some people have this habit of hitting their forehead when they forget/remember something. Get rid of this habit, it disturbs the entire Ida/ Pingala/ Sushumna system.

Then on the head are more points. The top of the head is extremely sensitive. You can try this tiny marma chikitsa yourself, take 1-2 tablespoons of warm coconut oil and do a self massage. Very gently with your whole palm, rub the top of your head. It takes about 15mins for this much oil to be absorbed into this point. More oil the better. Highly beneficial, do it at least once a week regularly. Overall energy will increase, sense of hearing, smell sight etc will improve. (Or you can ask your family member to do it for you). Hair will also improve as a side-benefit!

Then is the mid point between the edge of the eyes and the ears, a slight hollow in the skull, both sides. If you get a headache or feel stressed out, you can gently rub these points to get relief. You must be doing this already.

Marma points, Heal your body yourself.

The throat, the center hollow in the front and the two sides of the throat. (As a kid, I remember getting hit by a brother on the center hollow, I remember breathing but no pran flowing, then blacking out). Vishuddhi chakra with its Rudra granthi, very sensitive. One should always be careful of the head, throat and the spine/back.

Then on the shoulder, the point where the bones of the arm and collarbone meet in a complicated joint. The arm-pits are also quite sensitive. Also the points where the legs join the body, the inner hollow.

The entire fleshy palm and sole are sensitive areas, especially the center of the palm/sole. The webbing between your thumb and first finger is linked to your head. The next time you have a headache, try very gently pressing this web. (This is a snyau marma point and is also in the foot). As is the center of the wrist on the inner side. Your entire body is connected to your wrists and palms, also ankles and feet. It feels relaxing to get a foot oil massage just for this reason. You can get the same benefit by taking warm coconut oil in your palms and gently rubbing them together, applying gentle pressure, wrist upwards for 15 mins. And you can ask a family member to do the same gentle rubbing with coconut oil for your feet. (And you can return the favour later!).

The midpoint of your forearm and the midpoint of your upper arm. And the midpoint of the fleshy part of your calf and midpoint of the inner sides of the thighs in your legs. You must have noticed that calves ache when you are tired, it is not muscle pain, it is this pran movement issue. If you gently rub the marma point with oil as above, it will feel better quickly.

The tip of the knee and the elbow. I am sure we all have banged our elbows and frozen in pain. Well, the excruciating pain is because it is a Marma point.

Then the chest, on the diaphragm, the central point, where the abdomen and chest join. Here lies the Anahata chakra. On the chest, the entire aureole areas. Then lower is the Manipur chakra, this is the center of your waist above the navel linked to the solar plexus. The point of Swadhisthan chakra, midway between your navel and lower end of the abdomen, this is linked to the kidneys and urinary bladder. The Muladhar chakra ie the physical anus and the reproductive organs. These last are quite sensitive areas from the nadi/ pran flow point of view, if there is a cut here, it can be fatal.

On the back, personally, I feel the entire back is sensitive as the Ida/ Pingala/  Sushumna run sort of ‘below’ the backbone. Damage to the backbone area and a couple of inches on either side of it will affect pran flow in these three main nadis.

If you want to increase the efficacy of your self-massage try these simple things

  • If you know Reiki, or any other healing energy modality, reiki your oil hands to trigger the healing energies.
  • If you have learnt to make a Chi-ball, make it and put on in your oil bottle, with all intention of healing and perfect health.
  • Draw a healing rune on the oil bottle.
  • Pray to Danvantari, the form of Shri Vishnu who is the deity of Ayurved. Recite his mantra once or just think of him with gratitude and request his help.
  • Or call on your source of faith, request help from your Higher Self.
  • Play your favourite Sanskrit Shlok/ Mantra/ Stotra in the background. Intend that this healing energy enters the oil and your body.
  • Sit in the early morning Sun while doing this. Skin and oil together in the early morning Sun will give you your daily Vitamin D supplement.
  • If you feel drawn to any flower in the Bach flower system, use its energies in your healing process.
  • Know that this will work because you are doing it for yourself.

Try some of these small things from Marma if they appeal to you. If you do them regularly with positive intentions you will help your own body and mind and be happier and healthier.
