Analysing Vimshottari dasha of rulers of houses 1-6

The Vimshottari system is the most commonly used system for timing events in a chart. It might seem complicated to analyse but it is not! If you can remember a few keywords of each house/sign and each planet you are off to a good start.

Any Vedic software can calculate which planet’s Mahadasha/ main-period is operating at the present. The planets follow a fixed order, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. The lengths of the Main-periods and sub-periods of the planets are fixed. (There are sub-sub periods too, upto 5 levels, but you can ignore those for now). The period of the ruler of a house, activates the house.

So as a first simple step, find out which planet’s main-period you are currently in and locate which houses in your chart are ruled by this planet. e.g if you are in Moon Mahadasha and you have a Cancer Ascendant, your 1st house is ruled by the Moon. So your 1st house will be in focus during this Moon Mahadasha.

This is a good way to check if the time given to you by your client is correct. Events in a lifetime should match the periods else the birth data is incorrect.

Analysing Vimshottari dasha of rulers of houses 1-6

Time periods of the 1st house/ ascendant lord generally grant increase in physical vitality, strength and health. You are more active in your social group, you are more known. Your environment is conducive and you act with confidence. You feel energised. You mature, grow up, take on new responsibilities. Learning opportunities, new profession, marriage, birth of children is possible. You are on the move, you explore new things, travel, meet new people, you can take calculated risks which will pay off. It is a new you, more visible. Use this period wisely.

The details will depend on the nature of the planet involved. e.g. for 1st house, Aquarius sign the ascendant lord is Saturn. Saturn will always make you work hard. He is your ascendant lord so will be favourable to you, but that won’t stop him from making you work hard with discipline.

The periods ruled by the lord of the 2nd house are the possible Marak periods. You might leave your physical body if the longevity of your chart has reached its limit. The 2nd and 7th houses are the houses of Value or Maya. If you have saturated your capacity to accumulate, you leave this physical body and come back with a new one. The owners of these two houses decide the timing of the physical death. On the material side this period is about solid tangible things. You can use this time to generate wealth, investing sensibly, buying assets and making yourself financially secure. As the 2nd is also about the family you will get time to be with the family, connect with your family members, and also furthering your family interests, eg investing the family’s combined wealth. You will benefit in your profession, your social standing will improve and your birth father will also benefit through you.

The results will depend on the power of the house to give results. e.g. if you have a separative malefic planet like Ketu placed here, he will work to separate you from all that the house signifies. Thus it will be a difficult period.

Periods of the lord of the 3rd house are busy with communications. You communicate more or receive more communications. You might write, explain or teach skills. You will talk, interact. For writers, this will be a productive period as your work will be published and appreciated. Trading and gains will be possible. Brothers and brother-figures, fellow teammates will support. If you are married, this period will be favourable for your spouse as the 3rd house is in the favourable 5/9 axis from the 7th house. If the 3rd house is well-disposed this period can be quite active and fruitful.

As a general rule, the houses placed in the 5/9 axis, 1/7 axis and 4/10 axis from the house under the spotlight fare well. The houses placed in the 6/8 axis are always adversely affected, the 3/11 and 2/12 axes are also negatively impacted to some extent.

Analysing Vimshottari dasha of rulers of houses 1-6

Time periods of the lord of the 4th house are obviously linked to the home, the homeland, traditional activities and customs. You are ‘rooted’ in some way or the other. You might acquire things which give you security, e.g buy a new house, new car, landed property, orchards etc. Your parents, especially the mother will give you affection and you might feel more deeply about her. If this period occurs in the childhood, it can be better for nurture/nourishment as the mother is more available. During this periods, protection and shelter is more available. You will receive parental love in one way or the other. You might also complete your schooling, pass exams successfully etc. This period is a good one.

A lot depends on the placement of the house owner planet whose period is on, e.g if this planet is himself placed in the 12th house, then this period will cause pain and abandonment. In case you are predicting a negative result, do check if the planet concerned has matured. The intensity of the planet becomes more reasonable after this age. e.g if this is Mars, he matures at the age of 28yrs (unless his maturity is held back by late maturing planets conjunct). Before this age, he expresses himself as aggression, physical dominance, fighter, challenger, rash, ready for a physical fight. But after he matures he can become cooly competitive, impersonal, coldly calculative, business-like, focussed, the cold rage variety, a more ‘grown-up’ way of expression.

Time periods of the ruler of the 5th house are full of creativity, a whirl of bright lights, the focus on the self. Birth of children is almost always a result, or you gain students, children of your soul. This period is favourable for all sorts of activities. Gamblers, politicians, creative people, actors, celebrities, etc are all benefitted. Even for common people like us, there are gains in health, confidence, money flow, investments and overall luck. Now if your 3rd or 6th house allow breaking of rules, you might commit petty crimes and get away with them.  If the self-ego is very high these crimes may not even be considered as ‘crimes’. Actively use this time to create lasting benefits for yourself.

Some placements are more challenging and some are pleasurable, but we cannot call them bad/ good. They all just Are. Each placement helps you resolve karma and was chosen by you at birth. How you go about them is your choice always. If you resist the events unfolding around you, it will create more conflicts. But if you actively participate in them with full awareness they become more manageable.

Now the period of the ruler of the 6th house are always difficult. Karmic payback big-time! If there are planets placed here it can get worse. There is bodily illness or injury, social conflict, accusations, cheating, servitude victimisation, exploitation, addiction, crime, poverty, financial problems, problems in marriage, business, partnerships. You might have to face court proceedings. If this period occurs in childhood there might be neglect by the parents/care-takers. You are bound to experience stress during this period one way or the other. Whatever you go through, it is karmic in nature. You will feel a lot of things, try to think objectively. Physical pain, emotional pain, something painful in your family/ social/ inter-personal relationships, little things which add up and make you uncomfortable. It can become so stressful on the outer levels that you are unable to think on the internal root cause. You think in loops, you go over the details but never look beyond them into the causes. Then finally you lose faith, you doubt that there is anyone looking out for you. You feel lost and alone and this pulls you down a negative spiral. So instead, think this as a problem which you have to solve, try to be analytical rather than emotional, this would be more helpful.

This was the first step in analysing the Vimshottari dasha. The keywords from the houses 1st to 6th, will write about the 7th to 12th in my next post.

Analysing Vimshottari dasha of rulers of houses 1-6

Planets placed 6th from Moon, emotional stress

The 6th house is the Maha-dushamsthan, servitude, sufferings, victimisation, debts, loans, illness, conflicts, imbalance, karma due, litigation, enemies, broken contracts, stress to marriage, divorce etc is the domain of this house. The physical actual conflicts are seen from the 6th house from the ascendant sign, but the 6th from the Moon is one placement which you should analyse in detail. The emotional aspect of imbalance, which hits harder than the mere physical aspect.
This one house indicates those agents who are emotionally imbalanced, or cause emotional conflicts, make you miserable, those who are jealous or you, cause problems for your emotional security. This house also indicates illnesses of the mother and how the stresses created in your marriage affect your emotional comforts. Moon basically is nourishment, nurture and nature. All things represented by the Moon are eroded by the house located 6th from the Moon.

You know what the Moon generally signifies, but you should first analyse what your Moon signifies in your chart. e.g. for Libra ascendant, Moon is the owner of the 10th house, the profession, workplace and social status. Planets placed 6th from this Moon will cause emotional problems for the things indicated by your 10th house too. You might think this to be rather convoluted analysis, but astrology is only 9 graha, 12 houses/signs and covers all aspects of your life. So analysing a chart is always like this, patterns within patterns.

Planets placed 6th from Moon, emotional stress

Here is a framework which you can use to analyse. The full results of a planet are dependent on several factors, like is it exalted, debilitated, in retrograde or forward motion, combust, involved in a planetary war, in the house of its friend/enemy, aspected by malefics /benefics, where are the signs owned by it placed in the chart, etc. Every chart is unique.

Sun is placed 6th from Moon – Here the self-ego creates problems on the emotional front. Your children, students, expressions of creativity create emotional discomforts. You might want to help them but it backfires on you. Or you might suffer because of men who are father-figures or creatively inclined, always egoistic who attract initially but later create persistent emotional issues for you. Recognise the pattern and try to come out of it.

Mercury is placed 6th from Moon – emotional arguments with neighbours, younger age group, traders, siblings, teammates, mother’s relatives, servants. These agents of Mercury dislike you but you desire to help them! The lesson that this 6th from Moon house is out to teach is this, even if you emotionally want to help these agents, they will create stress for you. So a better option would be to keep a safe distance form them and avoid getting emotionally tangled with them beyond a limit. People with this placement if in business should be alert. Either you wont be able to see the big picture and get lost in the details or you will be associated with such people who will cause you stress.

Venus is placed 6th from Moon – Here you have to look out for addictive behaviour. Women will be a source of pain, sisters too. Venus in the 6/8 axis from the Moon can push towards potentially addictive behaviour of over-indulgence in sugary, alcoholic, numbing, soothing, foods/drugs. The mother may be addicted to something. If this chart is of a man, the mother and the wife are always at loggerheads. Arguments on emotional and trust between the husband and wife, if other factors exist can lead to divorce. Finances will be unstable, as the person takes an emotional attitude towards money, also spends money in paying for ‘soothing’ distractions. Here too, if you are involved in business, be alert.

Mars is placed 6th from Moon – emotional anger and confrontations. Agents of Mars, brothers and brother-figures especially are a source of stress. In helping these brothers, the native gets into emotional trouble. If you have Mars located 6th from the Moon remember that the closer you are to your ‘brothers’, the more you will be stressed emotionally. Then Mars will create aggression, arguments which will make the situation worse. Accept that you cannot help him and be free yourself. If in this, Mars is retrograde, the turmoil you go through is not expressed outwards in a healthier way it gets internalised and you suffer more. This placement can also indicate emotional stress because of boyfriends.

Planets placed 6th from Moon, emotional stress

Jupiter is placed 6th from Moon – Jupiter expands thus there will be several emotional issues in life. You will be overweight. This is because you are under emotional stress from so many people in life that you put on fat as a protective barrier, you may over-eat or not eat much but still you will be over weight! All agents of Jupiter cause stress, so the spiritual-teacher, peers, patrons, seniors, demands from your ancestral spirits, even the philosophies that you live your life by, etc will create stress. If this is a woman, the husband creates a significant chunk of stress, e.g. he may be ill, or takes bad decisions etc. This stress is not primarily physical, it is emotional and mental which later filters into the physical body. This placement also confers a workaholic nature on the native, he works and works to fulfil the never ending demands made on him by everyone. If you have this placement think on how much you give to others and how much you give yourself,

Saturn is placed 6th from Moon – this is a difficult placement as the mother is primarily affected due to which the childhood is affected. Perhaps the mother was over-worked, over-burdened, low in the social order etc thus had no time for child-care. Things do get better after Saturn matures at 36yrs of age but life is burdened by a list of responsibilities and duties. There will be demands from the public, you will be required to cater to the society at large, especially to classes lower than yours. You will never feel emotional satisfaction. The body and mind is tired always, there might be an undercurrent of fear. You are afraid to explore emotional ways of releasing yourself and prefer to work instead. Vimshottari periods of Saturn-Moon and Moon-Saturn will be troublesome. If you can cultivate a pragmatic and sensible approach some of these strains can be reduced.

Rahu is placed 6th from Moon – this should be analysed with some caution, as Rahu (and Ketu) take on characters of the planets aspecting/conjoint them and the house owner’s qualities too. Rahu is the rule breaker and the agent who sneaks into privileges rather than honestly earning them. He thrives in the environment of the 6th. He can use the problems of the 6th in imaginative, unbelievable ways to gain. But he always gives body pain. The stress of the wild, unpredictable Rahu, 6th from Moon, who desires stability and cyclic predicable routines, causes internal conflict. Moon wants to nurture and nourish but Rahu drains this Moon completely. There are several unending constant demands made on the personality to ‘give’,which ultimately gives a constant body pain. Moon-Rahu, or Rahu-Moon Vimshottari periods will be especially stressful.

Ketu is placed 6th from Moon – Ketu is scattered and diffuse, so here you are unaware of the emotional stress created by the 6th. The mind ignores people/environments which cause emotional turbulence. Is a rather good placement in a way. There might be pains and troubles in the physical body but the emotions are not affected. But if the lord of the 6th house is powerful then Ketu will take on his influence and give his results as per this planet’s nature.

The Vimshottari Mahadasha period of the owner of this house, 6th from Moon, is always emotionally turbulent. But if you are aware of what is happening you can better cope. So during this period you can expect conflict in your emotional/astral / subconscious / astral bodies / inner depths which will soon filter into your physical body as pain. Depending on the nature of this planet, you will experience internal pain first as a result of arguments, betrayal, treachery, broken promises, unfulfilled expectations, accusations and similar negativity. Some new agent linked to this planet may enter your life then cause emotional stress. (eg if the Moon himself is the owner of the 6th house from the birth moon, it will be a maternal figure). You take care of others but no one even asks if you are tired! You subconsciously expect this to happen and does happen. You are overworked emotionally perhaps victimised and ultimately exhausted. You expect emotional support/validation which doesn’t happen. However if you become aware of this emotional exploitation it loses its sting.

In my opinion, it is best if this 6th house from the Moon remains vacant. If you have a bunch of planets here you suffer more on the internal/emotional levels. The 3rd and the 6th houses of the zodiac are naturally ruled by Mercury with his agenda of arguments and mental loops, the 3rd house from the birth Moon is also a source of emotional stress where your thoughts loop.

The solution is ultimately awareness, if you can be aware of things, you can intelligently manage them, else you remain a puppet in the control of circumstances.

Navel displacement and setting it right

The human body is a perfectly engineered machine. It is much more than what we see with our physical eyes. Every part is perfectly in place, only if we knew how to use it! There was a question on navel displacement so writing this post. This is something which modern medicine has not been able to understand as yet, but has been addressed by Ayurved, the science of life and the living body and Yog shastra.

When you lift heavy things or twist your body suddenly or unnaturally or when you walk on uneven ground or climb stairs with jerks etc the alignment of the navel in relation to the body twists. This happens more commonly in small children, I remember my brother when he was a small boy always messing up his navel and my aunt setting it right several times. This can happen in adults too and can be seen as problems with digestion, cramps in the abdomen, bloating, acidity, heavy menstrual bleeding, uterus is affected, semen production reduces, impotency can result if this continues for long.

Navel displacement and setting it right

The navel called Nabhi in Sanskrit is a very important energy point of your body. It has a huge bunch of naadis clustered around it. If someone kicks you right on the navel you might even die. The Nabhi is also called the centre of creation. On the physical plane, you were formed around your navel. Your link to your mother in the womb was this Nabhi, and your body was formed around it. The centre of gravity of the human body is always his navel. If this shifts, i.e. navel displaces, the internal balance of the body is affected. The navel corresponds to the Manipur chakra where the ‘fire’ of your life exists. ‘Agni’, the conscious energy responsible for all sorts of conversions is located in your navel.  The panch-pran, the five vital energies are linked here, their movement in your body is with reference to the position of the navel. The navel is thus the point where the five main types of pran in your body remain in equilibrium. Thus its paramount importance.

In the galactic context, the central ‘black hole’, source of energy, around which our galaxy revolves is called the Vishnu-nabhi. (There is a lot more to the Vishnu-nabhi, will write a full post on this later). This portion of the sky seen from the earth lies in the Moola nakshatra, Sagittarius sign. Moola means root, origin, foundation, edge, firmness, temporary owner, start etc in Sanskrit. If you were born with your birth Moon in this Nakshatra you are different. This Nakshatra is ruled by Niriti निरीति, (the one who is free from all bindings) also the deity of annihilation. As per the Vimshottari system, the planetary ruler of Moola lunar mansion is Ketu, the agent of separation, the Moksh-karak. You are highly intuitive with a sense of ‘other’ about you. You have a sense of personal power and leadership qualities, but this does not translate into material benefits. It feels that you are between 2 worlds always. Material life can seem strange and you long for something undefinable. Past life memories can mix with the present as you have an easier connect with the energy of involution etc.

Navel displacement and setting it right

The navel is a delicate energy structure and is always protected. Energy moves out from the navel, which is not good. Wearing clothes where the navel is visible to others is not good for the energy body, you lose energy. In the traditional Indian dress, the dhoti for men and sari for women, a length of fabric is pleated and this thick pad of fabric is positioned exactly over the navel. If you can afford it, buy a gold chain and wear it on your waist, exactly on your navel and see how your energy gets balanced. Gold is not to be worn below the navel. (some women like wearing gold anklets, this will create problems for the reproductive system and blood pressure in the future.) Putting coconut oil in the navel is the best way to remain healthy. Always use ‘edible’ Coconut oil, whatever brand you use, it should be marked ‘edible’ clearly on the bottle. Put a few drops of coconut oil in your navel when you go to sleep at night. You can use other ‘edible’ oils, like apricot, almond, ‘roghan badam shirin’ is a good option. But coconut oil is the best. You will look younger, fresher and a lot of diseases will be nipped in the bud.

With this brief introduction, on to the practical. Navel displacement. Lie down on a flat surface, feet together straight out, toes pointing up. First find out where exactly is the navel? Is it in the center of the navel hollow or is pulled away from this exact center.  For this check your heartbeat in your navel. Put your index finger into the hollow of the navel and check where you feel your heartbeat. In a normal body the heartbeat is felt in the exact center of the navel, i.e. your finger will feel your heartbeat equally from all sides in the hollow of your navel. But if the navel is displaced, you will feel the thud of the heartbeat only on one side of the navel. This is navel displacement and is extremely bad for your health. The first symptom is always stomach upset, constipation (if heartbeat is felt on the upper side only, pran is more than apan), or loose motions (if heartbeat is felt on the lower side of the navel, apan is more powerful than pran) etc. This is basically because the panch-pran, the five types of pran, going out of balance and the naadis of your body are now carrying this pran in jerky motions. If this state continues for longer, you will fall seriously ill.

So how to set this ‘displaced’ navel back to its correct energy position? It is very easy! This is very commonly done in India, especially when small children get stomach upsets. The patient lies down on his back on a flat surface, e.g. on a carpet on the floor. Feet together, toes straight pointed upwards. The stomach is exposed and a metal coin or a small metal bowl is placed on the navel. Position this carefully so that it covers the navel. A small camphor piece is put on the coin and set on fire. This entire thing is now covered with a larger bowl in such a way that as the camphor burns and uses up the oxygen, a small vacuum is formed. The larger bowl now ’sticks’ to the tummy because of the suction created. This arrangement left undisturbed for some 10mins after which the larger bowl comes free of its own. After this the patient turns around on his side and slowly gets up, no jerks. He can have eat a small snack or a fruit now.

This simple method does two important things, first it pulls all the pran towards the navel because of the uniform suction. Then as the suction is uniformly around the navel, the excess pran is pulled out through the navel and the rest is all balanced evenly.

There are other ways of setting the navel right using Yog-asan, yogic postures, eg, Salabhasan, Dhanurasan, Tadasan, Matsyasan, Uttanpadasan etc. If you do the Uttanpadasan yogic posture you will never suffer navel displacement, it is basically lying on your back and raising your legs, do it only if you are physically fit. Or the navel can be brought to its normal position by pressing certain points on the legs, and there are certain points on the forearms/elbows. But it may be a bit technical to explain/do.

This vacuum bowl thingie, however, is the best and the simplest way of setting your navel back to its correct position.

Astrologically people who are Virgo-dominant are more prone to navel displacement. If you have your birth moon in Virgo, or ascendant Virgo or a bunch of planets in Virgo, or your 6th house is occupied by several planets, be aware of your digestion, abdomen and the energy flows around your navel. Take care of your navel and be aware of the heart beat in this very important organ of your body, this will help you remain healthier.

Navel displacement and setting it right

Two divisions of the Zodiac, psychologically

The Zodiac as you know is composed of 360 degrees divided into 12 rashis/signs. The first half of the zodiac is the first 180 degrees composed of rashis from the 1st one, Aries/Mesh to the 6th one, Virgo/Kanya. This is the personal half of the zodiac, its all about you. It is about the person, the individual, it expands out from the person. These six signs focus on the individual. These signs are in the stage of self-discovery. You might feel them to be perhaps selfish, self-centered or immature. Ego creates itself in Aries, explores, sustains itself throughout the next four signs. It then realises what exactly it has gained because of its focus on ‘self’, this is when it reaches Virgo. Product of self-ego is Karma on the spiritual side. On a material side, this half is about how a person develops himself till he becomes qualified enough to serve in the society. In this half, there are forces who take care of you and help you develop yourself. These forces are more personal and close to you. Here you are sheltered, allowed to develop your inclinations and tendencies. You are more in control of the situations here. To some extent, you are allowed to exercise free will.

The second half of the zodiac starts from Libra/ Tula and ends with Pisces/ Meen. This is where the personality diffuses, the larger picture comes into focus. The person sacrifices his individuality for the sake of the larger perspective. This is the disintegration of the self-ego and gradual immersion into the larger Self. Here the soul starts with a desire to balance in Libra and continues on this theme in the next four signs till it reaches the dissolution of karma in Pisces. You are required to work to rebalance karma, and you do work. On the material side this half-zodiac curve shows how you give back to the society. As you give, your physical structure also deteriorates and finally dissolves. Here the forces who interact with you are ‘grown-up’ and more impersonal. You are required to behave in society and contribute to its maintenance, the social dimension is more important. You are allowed scope to act in a way which affects several people/groups, this is an a way ‘diffused’ or ‘non-personal’. The situations here will be more in the hands of ‘destiny’/Daiva.

The signs of the zodiac are all about symbols and meanings which flow into each other, it is about consciousness evolving.

Now the houses are slightly different. They are oriented as per the degree of the zodiac which was rising at the east the instant you were born. The houses are the actual aspects of your own personal life. These houses take on some influences of the signs which occupy them, the planets which occupy them, the planet owning the sign occupying, the natural sign which could have occupied it and its owner planet too. A rather convoluted analysis this!

Two divisions of the Zodiac, psychologically

The Signs deal with subtle aspects which influence and the Houses will indicate what actually is.

So here is this psychological concept in keywords, these pair of rashi/signs and houses too are subtly opposite, mirror images but also fill-in-the blanks for each other at the physical, emotional and spiritual levels.

  • Aries – Personal, self-confidence, lone ranger, challenger, pioneer, Ego, self before everything else, raw power. Energy unfolds with will and the urge to act.
  • Libra – partnership, legal bindings under the law of the land, partnerships, relationships, equal and fair, power of intellect, adjustments, community economy

The 1-7 axis, is all about how you define yourself. At the very basic you define yourself with your body and environment. This is the first half of the zodiac, very personal things are seen from here. This 1st house is your personal ambition, initiative, drive, pioneering spirit etc. But as you grow/mature you define yourself with your relationships. You are increasingly someone’s wife/husband, son/mother, business partner. Your loved ones, significant “others” are linked to you defining you. This link is not random but as per some rule. This rule is mutually acceptable and can be moral, legal, social, spiritual etc rule. You evolve your Personality by adding Value.

  • Taurus – assets, family, treasuries, hoards, capacity, family time, parties, small intimate family gatherings. Perseverance and the strength to form and consolidate.
  • Scorpio – Aloneness, secrecy, delving deep into the self, travelling exploring, working hard, termination of the physical, emergence of the metaphysical,

The 2-8 axis is first about your personal assets and then how you change them using small intense windows of opportunities. Your abilities, how articulate you are, your share in your family’s assets etc is the 2nd house. Your personal interactions with your close family. Your identity is first linked to your birth family group, all its history, culture and reputation is by default yours. The 8th is the change in this by-default identity. It is the inheritance you receive from your family members on their physical death. Your spouse’s family changes changes your understanding of ‘family’.

  • Gemini – duality, personal thoughts and actions, skills, siblings, personal courage, vivaciousness, actions within personal control, versatility. Awareness of the superficial.
  • Sagittarius – inclusive, philosophies, patrons, peers, spiritual father, hope and destiny, luck, not in individual’s control, the faith of the people

The 3-9 axis is choice in its various dimensions. First you are aware of your choices then you become aware of the philosophical implications of your choices. The 3rd allows you to explore and understand the choices available to you. You are given the mental capacity to grasp the possibilities and also the boldness to act on your chosen option. These options are generally of the material and the superficial universe. The 9th is about inclusion. You go beyond the concept of distinct options and begin to appreciate the essential oneness in all. The superficial differences between options blur as you expand your understanding. This is deep philosophy as opposed to rational logic. You appreciate that there are experiences beyond the immediate material world.

Two divisions of the Zodiac, psychologically

  • Cancer – Home, security, comfort, mother, homeland, tradition, childhood environment, schools. Feelings, parental love and nurture.
  • Capricorn – social reputation, profession, constant work, salary, struggle for self-preservation, work to maintain the social structure, patience

The 4-10 axis about security. For better or worse, your birth mother is the most important force in your life. This is the deepest of the deep, the nadir of the circle of the zodiac. The deepest influences of the astral and subconscious. To a great extent, you get things here. You get these because of some personal emotional connect with others. It is your emotional stability and comfort. All the familiar things which soothe, comfort food, security of a mother’s lap, soothing traditions of your homeland, the sturdiness of the house the safety of your vehicles. It is also physical and mental strength, which is a result of nutrition and nurture. The 10th house is the security which you create. Your social standing, profession, professional reputation, work ethics, hard work, willingness to work for the greater society, your contribution to the social structure. This is also the things you receive because of your own rather impersonal interactions with several. The house of the natural father who passes on his social standing and profession talent to his offspring. This is the zenith of the circle of the zodiac at the time of your birth.

  • Leo – higher education, regal, self- centered, maturity, personal children, offsprings. Will to create and self confidence
  • Aquarius – earnings, gains, like-minded social groups, final result, patience rewarded,

The 5-11 axis is about self confidence and the gains thereof. The 5th house is where you are confident about yourself, self entitlement and self referential behaviour. You are not afraid to express yourself because you know that you are correct. You stand in the spot light and channelise your spark of divine intellect. your Higher education, children, students, disciples, success in speculations is seen from here. You radiate your energy here. You spread your influence further. You reach out to like-minded groups of people in the 11th house. How your personal creativity translates into name and fame. You now understand what your outgoing energy of the 5th house has really accomplished. For creating lasting wealth and fame both 5th and 11th need to be powerful.

  • Virgo – conflicts, actions, awareness of imbalance, aloneness, karma weighs on the soul, care, meticulousness, diligence. Utilisation of what has the ego has sown.
  • Pisces – diffusion, merging, beyond personal control, loss of individuality, destruction of physical form and ego, creation of the seed for the new to come.

The 6-12 axis or the Virgo-Pisces axis  is awareness. The 6th house is awareness of karma that you have accumulated and the work that you are now required to rebalance it. You are very analytical here as you should be as you are accounting for your karma! You logically work out the tangled knots. You are not emotional or intuitive about this. The 6th can be a harsh house, you either serve or suffer here. But this makes sense in the 12th house. All the pain and hard work of the 6th pays off in the 12th. The 12th is final diffusion and the meditative states which help you reach this ultimate goal. You have succeeded in rebalancing the karma and freed yourself.

This is the zodiac belt mapped out at the moment of your birth. One half is the bright, one the dark. One is the hidden half, of the inward-moving energies, rather private, more personal, where the focus is on you and every action here is with you in the focus. The other half is the public, the social side of you, your visible actions. Here you use up your energy for the greater cause, for the society.

Thus zodiac starts from a single focussed impulse of Aries or the 1st house and ends in the infinite nebulous of Pisces or the 12th house.

Two divisions of the Zodiac, psychologically

The adversarial 6/8 axis

In the horoscope, certain axis are considered adversarial to the personality. The worst possible mutual placement is the 6/8 axis (Shad-Ashtak), then the 2/12 axis and to some extent the 3/11 axis. This post is about the 6/8 axis. This can manifest in the following ways.

  1. Houses in mutual 6/8 axis
  2. Planets placed in mutual 6/8 axis
  3. Sign and its ruler planets placed in 6/8 axis

The adversarial 6/8 axis

Houses in mutual 6/8 axis

The 6th is the karma you have chosen to resolve in this life, it is a burden, but a burden consciously chosen at the moment of birth. But awareness of the burden does not make it any less easier to bear. The 6th is debtors, litigation, all that causes unbalance, servitude, service, suffering, betrayal, distrust, suffocation, broken promises, breached agreements, victimhood, suppression, theft, disease, illicit, conflict etc. You are required to serve people under these conditions or suffer in this way at other’s hands, this is the naked face of karma. Here you are required to give more than you receive, to rebalance the karma from your past lives.

The sixth counted from every house represents all these adversarial actions with reference to the matters of that house. Will write about this one example, the rest of the houses will be on the same lines.

e.g. the sixth from the 7th house will indicate how you are required to serve/suffer in the marriage contract. Possible problems in your marriage will be seen from the 12th house. Malefic influences in the 12th house indicate that you are required to ‘give’ more of yourself than your spouse in the marriage partnership. You might have to juggle office, work, cooking, housekeeping etc while your spouse is relatively free of all this. You might be forced to work more, give more of your energy in keeping this relationship going. This may cause you emotional or physical stress. Emotionally you might feel that you are being loved ‘less’, the marriage will not give you the support you need. On the physical plane you might not be able to enjoy the comforts of life, good clothing, healthy food or rest. You might be considered to be inferior to your spouse in the social context. Your spouse may be physically exploitative/abusive or you might feel him/her to be so. This exact result will depend on the actual malefic planets connected to the 12th house. It is possible that your spouse does not actively mistreat you, but you will feel his/her behaviour to be exploitative, depending on the malefics influencing your 12th house. If there are benefic influences on the 12th house these results will be minimised.

However Vimshottari periods of the 12th house lord will be tiring for you in the context of your marriage. This may be his Mahadasha/main period or his Antardasha/sub period in the Mahadasha of another planet.

And then the nature of the 12th is also a drain (counted sixth from) for the relationship. 12th is imagination, you visualise/fantasise about your perfect spouse, wasting your precious time/emotions/internal energy doing so. 12th is also sleep, You might not sleep properly after marriage for as simple a reason that your husband snores! But your energy is drained. 12th also signifies the energy expended during physical intimacy which naturally occurs after marriage, this is also an energy drain.

Now the other half of the axis, the eighth from. The 8th house is fundamental changes in the self-identity linked to sudden shocking events. This is a trying traumatic house. But if you can navigate through and accept the change it works for the good.

Lets continue with the 7th house example, the eighth counted from the 7th is the 2nd house. The 7th is the house of negotiations, bargains, equitable sharing, fairness, relationship, legal contracts and marriage. So after you get married immediately, you and your spouse are required to lose your individual identities and merge. You lose your name, house, job, family, familiar relatives, social identity, emotional foundation, entire mind-set, your physical-body, your energy-bodies and all these are transformed. I have seen this happen, a few mantra, the Agni/fire rituals, the Vivah/marriage ceremony and the auras of the two are changed completely. There is no going back. This transformation creates the 2nd house of family, shared resources, lineage, shared history, shared good times, speech, wealth, wealth-generating behaviour, the common ‘face’ you two show to the outer society etc. If there are benefic influences here, you go through this transformation easily and this contributes to your marriage success. Malefic influences on the 2nd houses creates unpalatable changes in marriage like a second spouse. In a marriage it is necessary that the two partners change, if they do not change the marriage itself will end.

The adversarial 6/8 axis

Planets placed in mutual 6/8 axis

Then the planets placed in such mutual axis are adversarial to each other and tend to give not-so-comfortable results. e.g. Libra ascendant. Mercury in the 5th house and Jupiter in the 9th house. (Mercury is ruler of the 9th and 12th houses. And Jupiter rules the 3rd and 6th houses here.) If you count from Mercury, Jupiter is placed eighth from him. And if you count from Jupiter, Mercury is placed sixth from him. Thus they are in the adversarial 6/8 axis and will not work well together. This means that the agents represented by Jupiter and Mercury will not give comfortable results when taken together. There will be several ways in which this works out. Your spiritual teacher will not teach you the necessary skills. Your university professor will not have time to guide you in your course work. If you fall seriously ill, you will not get the proper medicines in time. You cannot expect genuine feelings from your brothers/cousins/extended family, etc.

As per the Vimhottari system, the 120 yrs of human life is divided into main-periods/mahadasha of the planets. Within these main-period, there are sub-periods/antardasha. If the owner of the Main-period and the owner of the sub-period are in the 6/8 angle their give a bad time. In the above example, two periods will be especially traumatic, first will be the Antardasha of Mercury in the Mahadasha of Jupiter. And the second will be the sub-period of Jupiter in the main-period of Mercury. Be careful during these two typical sub-periods as all the agents of stress will be active.

Sign and its ruler planets placed in 6/8 axis

The 6/8 axis works in a third way. The house and the placement of the house owner in the 6/8 axis gives not-so-favourable results. In the above example, Jupiter (in 11th house) and his sign Pisces (placed in 6th house), are in the 6/8 axis from each other. So you cannot expect Jupiter to give favourable results with respect to the 6th house and neither can you expect Pisces to perform well here. Some expected results, health problems will be created with no easy solutions, you may not afford a doctor, or the medicines, wrong diagnosis will occur. Dream states will drain the energy. You might travel astrally draining your energy. Sleep will be disturbed, deep sleep may not be available. Meditative states may be difficult to achieve. You will not be allowed solitude. Guidance from spirits can actually misguide!

Again in the above example, Mercury (in 4th house) and his sign Gemini (in 9th house), are in the adversarial 6/8 axis from each other. So the things connected to these will also not give good results. Some results which can be expected, you will always be confused about your spiritual/philosophic path. Spiritual teacher may not guide properly. Mother will be argumentative and drain the energy. There might confusions connected to your higher education. Your peers/patrons/seniors will not guide properly, etc.

In a horoscope you will naturally analyse the 6th and the 8th house counted from the ascendant. But you will also need to analyse the 6th and 8th from the birth Moon, this placement will give you an indication on what will cause stress and trauma on the mental/emotional levels.

The adversarial 6/8 axis

The Conch, Shankh

The Conch is one of the most auspicious symbols in Sanatan Dharm. ‘Shankh’ is a Sanskrit word which means, a meter, a mantra, temple, conch etc. Shri Vishnu holds a conch named ‘Panch-janya’ in one of his hands. ‘Panchajanya’ is a Sanskrit word which broadly means the ‘one born by the union of the five’. These 5 can mean the 5 tanmantra, the 5 Gnyan-Indriya, the 5 Karma-Indriya or the 5 Panch-bhoot or the 5 Kosh/sheaths of the body etc. This divine conch is one of the 14 jewels which came out of the Eternal Ocean of Consciousness (Samudra Manthan). All gods, goddesses, major warriors from Ramayan, Mahabharat etc have their own conches, each with its specific name.

The Conch, ShankhThe conch that we use in our pujas is the shell created by the marine gastropod/snail Turbinella pyrum. These commonly found conches are all right handed, they coil dextrally, the aperture is towards the right side (Photo of the Shankh I use). These are used for all routine pujas and rituals and are blown in all auspicious ceremonies. The Shankh itself is also worshipped as a symbol of the Nada-Brahma, the creative power of the Ultimate Reality expressed as Sound.

Now there is the odd conch with the aperture towards the left side, sinistrally coiled. This is very rare and is not worshipped neither used for routine pujas. These are not used for blowing in auspicious ceremonies. This Conch represents energy moving inwards, it is destructive for the manifested. Just like the Swastik moving anticlockwise, or the Ganapati moorthi with his trunk coiled to the right, it represents involution, dissolution, Nivrutti. Only tantriks and people who know exactly what they are doing, will keep, worship, use and blow such a Shankh.

Blowing a Shankh requires that you pucker your lips in a typical way and have some lung power! Both men, women (except the 5 days of the monthly cycle) or children can blow it. However do remember that it requires some skill and lung power. Smaller conches are a bit easier to blow as lesser air is needed. There is only one note felt/heard when you blow, OM. Next time you blow your Shankh, keep your eyes closed and focus on your third eye. Initially you will see bursts of light, if you are on your spiritual path you will see the Shri yantra and as you advance, just the one Bindu. The cymatics of a conch-sound is the Shri-yantra. i.e. if you blow a conch in front of a liquid film or a sand film placed on a metal sheet which can freely vibrate, it will rearrange into the Shri-yantra.

When you do your Dhyan and progress spiritually, there will come a point where you will hear the sound of the conch (Shankh-nada), it can be so deafening that you might feel that after hearing this you have gone deaf. But even in the initial phases of your spiritual practice if you sit in a silent environment you will hear a deep sonorous OM/conch-sound continuously throughout your Dhyan.

So if you have a conch in your puja ghar/home altar, use it actively. Blow it thrice everyday. The vibrations produced are ‘OM’ and are not only heard by the ears but felt in every part of your bodies (all the 5 sheaths). This sound entrains your bodies to the highest possible vibrational frequency of OM. And your soul feels refreshed as it is entrained briefly with who you really are. You will feel fresher mentally as well as spiritually. You will be healthier and fall ill less. This sound of the Shankh will also clean your house of negative energies.

Then the water stored in the Shankh acquires positive energies and can be used regularly. Keep some water in your Shankh overnight, this is one of the best ways to increase the vibrational levels of water. Drink it for overall health and vitality. If you have skin problems rub this water on the affected part. If there are hair problems, put this water in your scalp. Wash your eyes in this water to keep them disease free and your vision clear.

The conch is a symbol of the Ultimate reality and is used to generate the sound of OM. It is an essential part of your puja ghar, so buy one and use it.

The Conch, Shankh

There was a question on the Hindu deities, so answering it here.

There is a common idea that the ‘God’ of Sanatan Dharm/Hinduism is Shri Vishnu. It is incorrect. The ‘God’ of Hindus is Energy, i.e. Parabrahma or the Singular Intelligence. Creation of the individual soul+universe, is a game of the three Gun, personified as deities. (Your soul and universe is different from mine.) Raja Gun is the creator principle, Brahma ब्रह्म and Sarasvati सरस्वती. The passion/urge is Raja Gun. Brahma is the potential and Sarasvati is the active principle of Raja Gun. Then Laxmi लक्ष्मी and Vishnu विष्णु are personified Satva Gun who maintain equilibrium. The active and potential principles of Tama Gun are Shakti शक्ति and Shiv शिव, who cause involution/destruction of the created.

As Raja Gun gets spontaneously excited, it immediately puts Satva and Tama out of balance too. They are interconnected. As Satva gets unbalanced by the action of Raja, it manifests as Mahat-Buddhi. i.e. Mahat-Buddhi is created from Satva Gun, this is the basic foundation on which further differentiated tattvas are created. And Satva Gun is depicted as Vishnu and Laxmi.

There is this line from the Tantra-ukta Ratri Sukta, recited by Brahma, विष्णुः शरीरग्रहणमहमीशान एव च, this broadly means “Brahma and Ishan (Shiv), ‘take up’ or ‘put on’ a part of Vishnu’s body/ strength/ solidity/ lowered energy. This action is then seen as both the stillness and movement of the world”. i.e. Raja and Tama gun interact with Satva gun. When Raja and Satva interact, the world moves, evolves. When Tama and Satva interact the world stills, it is involution or ultimately Moksh. Here ‘world’ means an individual soul and his personalised universe.

Neither of the three Gun are greater or lesser than the other, they are equal. To say that Vishnu is greater than Shiv or Brahma is the lowest of the three, is an unintelligent statement.

Venus and Mars placed in the 8th house

Venus placed in the 8th house.

This is a reasonably favourable placement but a bit typical. Venus and Mars get along quite well and he is comfortable in this house. But do check out which sign he is occupying and he is placed here as the ruler of which houses of the chart (i.e.where are Taurus and Libra placed?). This helps in in-depth analysis. Also the strength of the ascendant sign/lord, 8th house lord and Mars.

Venus here is the agent of hoards, relationships and balance in the house of sudden catastrophic identity changes. You can make the most of this combination by consciously initiating changes rather than having them suddenly forced on you.

You will be quite intelligent and well-known in society, but very few people will know the real you. You like discovering secrets, you enjoy this deeply, you are skilled at extracting information. And then you prefer hiding your real self. You will always have secrets and also know how to use them.

You do not follow established religion. You do your own esoteric /spiritual /occult practices and are quite good at these. If you are a woman these tendencies will be more powerful. All professions indicated by the 8th house are possible in this Venus placement, a doctor involved in childbirth or cosmetic surgery, confidential financial work, emergencies, disaster relief, mining and exploration, healers, occultists etc are all possible.

There will always be some irregularities in love affairs and marriage. Relationships may begin and end shockingly? Multiple marriages and secretive relationships are possible. The actual wedding event may be low-profile. The spouse may have occult tendencies or financial abilities which he/she keeps secret. Or the spouse may deliberately keep a socially low profile. If Venus is unable to give good results, the spouse, especially the wife, might suffer with medical problems or have a relatively short life. The spouse and in-laws will be generally charming, fair people. You will be on good terms with them. Spouse’s speech, voice, face and behaviour will be fair and balanced. However all your relationships will have something concealed which can cause problems. You always keep a part of yourself secret in all relationships, and simultaneously your partners will also keep their secrets. Venus in 8th is secretive but not dishonest (unless malefic influences). There will be issues because of this so always try to understand the other before taking a final decision.

Marriage and partnerships will generally give gains. You might marry for money! Legacies and inheritances can come in. However it would be good if you keep a monthly account of earning/spendings to ensure that your financial situation remains comfortable. You keep your financial dealings, money and properties secret. If Venus is afflicted you might engage in shady deals and financial crimes.

Medical problems can be of the blood, kidney, reproductive organs, diabetes, connected to liquids in the body. Death can occur in a highly spiritual place or in a place of pilgrimage. It is generally a long life with an easy death. If the horoscope supports, this Venus can grant Moksh or at least significant spiritual growth.

Venus and Mars placed in the 8th house

Mars placed in the 8th house.

Mars is the natural ruler of the 8th sign of the zodiac, Scorpio and always exerts his subtle influence on the matters of the 8th in every chart. The agent of life and death, placed in the house of death is not easy and requires careful analysis. A lot will depend on which sign occupies the 8th and Mars as the ruler of which houses is placed here (where is Aries and Scorpio placed). It is a challenging placement but can give good results.

Energy will be high and you perform well in emergency situations. You thrive on high energies. You need the buzz! If you do not get it from your environment, you will then create such energies yourself. But if you are placed in a tense situation you absorb it into yourself and can actually act a calming agent! So go out, engage in physical activity, learn contact sports, drive, feel your blood pounding, channelise your energies in such activities so that you do not explode! This placement labels you as a Manglik‘, so finding a life partner (Indian arranged marriage) can be difficult.

The moral compass may be weak, e.g. might resort to bribery, cheating or manipulate finances to increase wealth. You can gain wealth in from others and from insurance and other such financial schemes. You might be perceived as being untrustworthy and your friends, relatives and brothers can suddenly behave in a untrustworthy manner themselves. Will know several secrets about several things which may be legal/illegal. May be required to take decisions or act on such matters. (However if a debilitated Mars occupies the 8th, he turns into a manipulator and causes problems for himself and others.)

Personal health will be fiery, temper will be high and risk taking behaviour will be the norm. The movement of pran in the body’s energy channels /naadi is highly fluctuating and of high intensity. The body is susceptible to ‘heat’ diseases and diseases of the reproductive organs and blood circulation. If a woman, should take special care during pregnancy and childbirth. Surgeries can happen several times in life. Children will be lesser in number. Longevity is generally on the shorter side, but for this the strength of Mars, 8th house lord, ascendent sign and its lord will have to be evaluated together. Death will be linked to liquids in some way e.g blood disease, kidney/urinary problems, drowning etc or in ‘sharp’ incidents, accidents. However has abilities for energy-healing.

Is passionate, can have affairs before marriage and secretly after marriage. Spouse’s behaviour, speech, wealth, voice and face and his/her family are indicated by the 8th. Wealth tends to increase after marriage and you believe in financial security. If this Mars is well placed then it can be ok, but if you get such a chart for marriage matching do double-check. A badly placed Mars here (aspected by or with more malefics or debilitated, worst would be a Rahu -Mars combination here) can indicate a bad situation for the spouse in every way including physical health/ longevity. A sense of joy/companionship with the spouse will be absent. You tend to dominate your spouse, in-laws and family members.

A Mars in 8th will aspect the 11th, 2nd and 3rd houses. So gains and finances will be good as long as you take personal initiative and interest in them. There might be friction with the family/brothers. This placement is a tough one but if you can channelise your energy appropriately it can be managed well.

Venus and Mars placed in the 8th house

This above was the bare-bones astrological part which you can use for analysing  your horoscopes. But astrology is really Jyotish, the science of Illumination. So here is an esoteric dimension which might interest.

Venus and Mars together are very fascinating forces. Mars is life, death and rebirth, the karmic cycle in which the individual soul moves till he attains Moksh. Mars represents your taking on the body and also your leaving it. The signs Aries and Scorpio are linked in the adversarial 6/8 axis from each other.

Venus is the limit of experience, the limit of Maya. Venus is the natural Marak, he decides when you have completed your karma of accumulating treasures and fulfilled your karma-linked relationships. His two signs, Taurus and Libra are also in the adversarial 6/8 axis from each other. As these two signs are the essence of Maya, the 2nd and 7th houses of your chart also represent Maya. Once you complete your experience of Maya, you attain Moksh, so Venus is the real Moksh-karak.

If you analyse these 4 signs/houses together you will get an inkling of the tremendous forces Mars and Venus represent together. Mars through his natural rulership of the 1st house creates your personality, you are literally born here. You then act/use the energy of the 1st to create the wealth of the 2nd house. If you have acted with a sense of self, the 2nd will be a fruit of your karma (karma-phal), and will be added to your stored karma, i.e. agami/new karma adds to the sanchita/stored karma. If your actions do not have the ‘I’ tag, then this house will represent rebalancing of karma (you do not create more karma and are actively rebalancing the stored hoard).

Now while you are busy creating/rebalancing karma, the energy of your body gets used up. So as the potential of the 2nd house gets realised, the vitality of the physical body diminishes. When you completely realise the potential of the 2nd, you simultaneously completely finish off the vitality of the manifested body thus the physical body dies. Depending on what type of actions you were doing, you will have created more karma or achieved Moksh.

Now in the same way, the 7th and 8th houses also work together. The natural ruler of the 7th is Venus and that of the 8th is Mars. The 7th represents karmic bindings, the other function of Maya. You are required to create and maintain relationships equitably and fairly here. You may call these marriage or business partnerships at the material level, but nevertheless they are bindings on the spiritual level. This 7th house can represent the relationship between you and your body. And the deepest bindings which you have laid on your own soul (the 7 bindings of vice, virtue, weakness, power, passion, dispassion and ignorance). Or finally your relationship with your own Higher Self.

The 8th house represents changes in identity which are caused by complete upheaval. The 8th uses the energy of the 7th to power itself. You get into relationships, experience them, saturate yourself and then transcend. The experience-energy is of the 7th, the House of Change uses this to change you at very fundamental levels. If you have observed yourself carefully through your life, your deepest changes in self-identity are always linked to relationships. Mars as the agent of death/rebirth, uses up Venus’s energy of fairness and balance. And when the potential of the 8th is complete, the deepest relationship of your soul with your present incarnated physical body/environment is also complete and you leave it. Now on the spiritual front if you have experienced each of the 7 bindings to the fullest you transcend them and achieve Moksh.
