Planetary war is a peculiar astronomical condition where several planets are together in one sign at once. In terms of speed, the Moon is the fastest graha, next is Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Rahu/Ketu and then Saturn which is the slowest. And then the fast-moving ones catch up to the slower planets and the distance between the two becomes less than one degree, this is Graha Yuddha. This peculiar conjunction affects the powers of the planet who has the lesser degrees, it is considered to have lost the war! The Sun, Moon, Rahu and Ketu do not involve themselves in such fights. Only the five, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn are involved in Graha Yuddha.
The logic behind this is quite simple. A planet is considered to give more results, the deeper he advances into a sign. e.g. A Jupiter which is placed at 4 deg in Leo and a Mercury placed at 5 deg Leo. In this case, Mercury is more capable of giving results related to Leo than Jupiter based on their degree placement in the sign. And in terms of war, Mercury is the the victor.
This ‘planetary war’ concept is not very important in analysing birth horoscopes but is applicable in Prasna, in analysing the effects of transiting planets and in mundane astrology. There are four types of planetary war,
- Occultation – In this case the two planets have the same direction of movement and the lie on the same degree. And the planet nearer to the earth completely obstructs the one who is farther away. (Chhadan or Bhaed)
- can cause failure of rains, discord among prominent people, clashes between nations,
- Apasavya – This is occultation but when one of the planets is moving in a forward motion and the other in a retrograde motion.
- Internal flights among the ruling class
- Obstruction – In this case the planetary spheres touch each other but do not overlap. Just their edges touch. (Ullekh or Rodh)
- can cause confusions in government, internal unrest, civil war, famines,
- Anshu-mardana – This is when the planets are 1-5 deg from each other and their energies/rays clash with each other.
- disease and poverty can spread among the populations.
In the present time, in June/July, a planetary war will occur in Gemini and then in Cancer as Mars, Mercury and Venus are going to move together, in forward and also retrograde motions. During this period they will also be with Rahu while in Gemini. They will also accompany the Sun and occasionally go combust. The present times are highly confused with retrograde Saturn and Ketu in Sagittarius and a retrograde Jupiter in Scorpio.
This confusion in the Gemini – Sagittarius axis will create war like situations in the world, with religion – fueled aggression. When it hits the Cancer – Capricorn axis it will cause problems for homeland security and social issues which will affect large sections of the society.
In analysing transits, also remember that the planet which has advanced more into the sign dominates, so in June you have Mars in Gemini leading the Sun, Mercury and Rahu. Two fiery planets, Sun, Mars and one airy, Rahu with the impressionable adolescent Mercury. As Mars dominates all these, summers have been intense, forests have been on fire, people have been very passionate about causes (Indian elections!), rains are late, people will have been suffering heat-related health issues etc. The situation will marginally improve as Mercury overtakes Mars and till he exits Gemini. And this is all happening with Rahu, the agent of desire, in Gemini aspected by the agent of constriction, i.e Saturn from Sagittarius.
People with ascendants or birth moon sign, Gemini, Sagittarius and to some extent Virgo are badly affected, ‘heat’ in all its possible forms will be after them. Aries and Scorpio are better off as Mars is the winner of the Graha yuddha. Taurus should take care especially, of the health and avoid accidents while driving, might be required to live away from home for some time. Cancer is not in a very favourable position either. Pisces will feel the heat and body/mind fatigue. For the rest of the signs it is average.
To get more personal, look into your birth-chart and check out what the Gemini-Sagittarius means to you, which houses it falls in. Expect problems from this axis and its keywords.
The present times till September 2019, when Saturn will turn forward again, are very happening, with events moving very fast. Do keep notes and keep track of what is happening, it is going to be quite educational. But in your personal lives try to keep calm and work through situations as they present themselves. It is the ideal time to study the effects of transits, retrogrades, planetary war, combustion etc as so many planets are involved.

Just recently started to understand my chart. I read online that jupiter saturn( both retrograde) in 6 th house of Virgo Aries ascendant, with less than a degree apart causes Jupiter to lose all benefits.

The concept of graha yuddha or planetary war is more used in Prashna kundali or in predicting effects on nations etc, medini jyotish. In personal horoscopes, this concept has limited application.
Basically it means that when a planet moves more deeper into a sign he affects the environment of this sign more deeply.
The power of a planet for individual horoscopes is better seen with the ‘shad-bala’ calculation. Check their scores here to know their power.
In your case, the house is the 6th house, malefics perform better here by restraining the damaging influence of the agents of the 6th.
It would be better if Saturn works harder from here.
Both planets will give their effects, especially depending on their individual connected dasha/ transits when they are in a position to act more.
Thanks for the comments. One more topic now a days am reading Astro locality many places, is there any merit to it. The birth chart behaves differently depending on where you move.
Depending on where I stay it shows my Ascendant moving 6 places becoming Virgo from Aries.

Your birth chart never changes. The exact time of birth and the exact location of the delivery are a life-time thing.
If there is an error of a minute the entire horoscope and predictions from it will go wrong. Or if you use the wrong latitude/longitude the chart will go wrong.
Whatever birth chart you are born with has been imprinted in your body and mind and will be with the body till your soul leaves it.
Western astrology is incorrect as they do not consider the precession of the equinoxes. The Earth wobbles like a spinning top and this wobble has to be factored in the calculations. Vedic astrology does this and this factor is called ‘Ayanamsha’. The western astrologers are stuck with the configurations of 2000+yrs in the past. There will never be correct predictions with western system. They have added the outer planets and the asteroids and confused themselves even more. In addition they do not have Dasha systems so they do not have a tool which can predict the timing of the events to happen. Some western astrologers use something called ‘progressions’ but these charts and their predictions are not accurate either.
From what I understand ‘astro-locality’ is being used in western to predict how a change in the house location can change life. And they claim that the birth chart changes! This is sheer unintelligence.
There is a very easy and simple method from the birth chart coupled with transits/dashas. One can easily predict which in which direction the change is going to be. If it is very far or nearby. For what reason, eg education job etc. Or if one is going to profit by this change or not. This you can do if you have your exact time/location of birth available.
If the exact birth time is not available the Prashna kundali can equally easily predict all this.
Again the birth horoscope never changes in life.

Thank you for the post. However the logic presented here clashes with other post on planet speed. Here the faster planet is winning the “planetary war” but in the other post the slower or stationary planet has more impact on a sign/house.
Could you please clarify this apparent anomaly?

The ‘faster planet’ does not win the planetary war.. The planet which has advanced max into the sign ‘wins’ .. there is a very big difference in these two statements.
This winner gives the more evident results.. And this doesn’t mean tht the ‘loser’ doesn’t give any results at all .. this means tht the winner is more predominant.. this consideration is necessary fr the birth chart analysis if there are a bunch of planets in a house ..
now fr the speed part, this is connected to how the planet controls fast/slow moving changes in life. This is esp relevant fr checking results connected to planets in transit.
do read those posts again ..There is no anomaly.. the ‘planetary war’ and ‘speed of planets’ concepts are connected to different types of results..
eg a faster planet just entering a sign can b made to work differently if a slower planet has advanced more into the sign..

Thank you for your quick response. Now it is clear. However i checked on other sites about “graha yudha” and they claim planet with lower degree wins.
Also some claim that Mercury never loses planetary war(even if it has lower degrees). There are also some other considerations to analyze this topic depending on planets involved.
Yet others claim there is no planetary war as planets are in different orbits and just seem to be closer as seen from Mother Earth!

the planet who has advanced higher into the sign always influences the sign more strongly than the other.
all 5 tara graha which includes mercury are involved in this.
