Shri sukta, first verse.

The Devi//Prakriti is the creative force of the Parabrahma/Ultimate consciousness. The Ultimate is inert and manifests the creative principle only when the intention of Leela/Creation arises. (Nasadiya Sukta Rg Ved 10th mandala 129th sukta describes how creation occurred). Those aspirants on the spiritual path desirous of Moksh/Experience of the Ultimate, first worship this creative force in all its names, forms with mantra, yantra and tantra. Everyone is supposed to recite the Gayatri mantra 108 times from the age of 6yrs onwards, I use this mantra in several ways. But the mantra I love is the navavarna mantra. And then is the Shrisukta which grants prosperity in all ways, it is 15 verses long. Shri means ‘prosperity’ and sukta means an ‘apt description’.

(The gender indicative words are meaningless as these are energies. However at the simplest explanation, ‘still’ energies are referred to as masculine and the energies ‘in movement’ are referred to as feminine)meru2This sukta in very clear language describes the energy, kundalini and other locks, brahmanadi and what happens when the locks on self-identification open etc. There are 53 attributes of the Devi described in this sukta. The 54th is ‘Om’ an open secret. Om is used so easily these days that we forget its immensity. It is the only sound created by the mouth where the tongue is not involved. Will write more about this later, let’s continue with Her attributes.

The first attribute is Hiranyavarana. It has several meanings,

  • Hiranya means indestructible, inert, fire, gold etc. Varna means the ‘door on the opening’, sound, color, etc. Thus name means that She is the impregnable covering on the opening of the Brahmanadi. i.e. the kundalini and associated locking structures.
  • It is also a reference to the humming sound associated with the muladhar chakra. She exists in all living beings (hi) and makes a sound (varna) like a humming bumble bee (ranya). (If you close shut your ears you can hear your chakras, huming, rippling water, tinking of tiny bells, deep gong etc, if you are doing your spiritual practice you can hear 12 distinct sounds.)
  • Prajapati (from the 33 koti devata), uses this energy in binding the human soul/jeevatma to the body.
  • This can be opened by the mantra, ‘Om Hiranyavarnayai namah’.

Harini is the second attribute. It means beloved of ‘Hari’, or a golden doe.

  • When you do your dhyan deeply, you see a yellowish light. When you are unaware of what this means it can randomly appear and be visible. But the instant you recognise it for what it means, it will vanish. It will dance at the edge of your vision, tantalising. Capturing it again in the center of your vision is the challenge. (Forces of akshep and vikshep interfere, whenever you try to focus these forces pull/push your focus away). It is like catching a female deer. This is caused by disturbances of the swadhisthana chakra. (ripple-like karma related to the fluid emotions)
  • Thus her attribute Harini.
  • Only when you attain complete awareness with conscious effort, keeping the mind in complete control, will the upper opening of the Sushumna be visible steadily.
  • The mantra here is ‘Om Harinyai namah’.

Third attribute Suvarna-sraja. Su (auspicious) + varna + sraj (garland, one who creates)

  • She creates the garland of auspicious sounds, properly recited sounds of correct metre. i.e. the beej mantras of the chakra system, the 54 sounds of Sanskrit, the golden garland.
  • To reach each of these beej mantras, a specific ‘sacrifice’ is required. i.e. to attain the spiritual you have to give up the material.
  • She is the source of the creation as vibrations.
  • The embodiment of the most secretive mystery which resides at the very base of the Meru danda/below the muladhar chakra. This is the source of all prosperity. This is the lower opening of the brahmanadi, as this is the source of all prosperity in the spiritual sense.
  • The mantra here is Om Suvarnasraje namah.

The fourth attribute is Rajatasraja. Rajat means silver, gold, nakshatra, blood etc.

  • She is the creator of Rajat. She fixes the body with the energy of the nakshatra (Prabhas – one of the 33 types of energy).
  • The name Rajatsraj is also the collective name of the 11 Rudras who make up the body. (Rudras are also part of 33 classes of deities). She is the creator of the Rudras too.
  • The mantra here is Om Rajatasraje namah

The fifth attribute is Chandraa.

  • Chandraa means the whirling of time/space, delight, vibrations of happiness in the mind, melting, rising moon, illumination, the internal moon, the unfathomable ocean of consciousness within the brahmanadi.
  • It is also the canopy/covering that covers the Ultimate. She is so brilliant that one can get caught quite forgetting that there is something even more magnificent hidden behind her light.
  • When your internal self/Ksheer-samudra, is churned by the forces of Rahu/Ketu, desire/apathy, the gem of self-knowledge appears. The internal Moon/Chandra is the light which indicates that She is about to appear. The force called the ‘Moon’ is an infinitesimal fraction of Her force.
  • Om Chandraayai namah brings this bliss.

Her sixth name is Hiranmayi.

  • Hiran is again ‘sound’. ‘mayi’ means pervading. She exists from the basal chakra to the 12th dwadash chakra and beyond into the dwadashant as their beej mantra individually and the pranav mantra/Om collectively.
  • She is the primordial sound/Om, and resides at the center of creation. Creation here in the spiritual sense is your chakra system and the brahmanadi.
  • Om Hiranmayyi namah is her mantra here.

Her seventh name is Laxmi.

  • It has several meanings including distinguishing trait, mark, sign, splendour, fortune, dominion, success, formula etc.
  • She gives (la), despatches and directs (root word-kship). She is sent out from the Parabrahma. And she further sends out the energy of creation and directs evolution of the souls.
  • She is the reason there exists ‘difference’. See, you and me are essentially the same Parabrahma. What makes us different is the power of Laxmi. Laxmi also creates a difference between the jivatma/us and our real nature/Parabrahma. Laxmi is power we use when we act/do karma.
  • And her other face, la also means ‘to dissolve’. Thus she can also dissolve the outward appearances for the aspirant. And also herself dissolves into the Parabrahma when the game/Leela is over.
  • Om Laxmyai namah is her mantra here.

These names are in the first verse of the Shri sukta. The verse ends with ‘jaatvedo maavaha’. ‘Jaat’ means collection, kind, possesses, belonging to, caused by, apparent in, created by, born, manifested, arisen, creatures, result etc. ‘Ved’ means knowledge, perception, obtains, true, real, feeling, property etc. So here this phrase you are inviting/invoking the One who is the ‘true collection of real knowledge’ to bring to you all the 54 attributes of Shri.

The Shri sukta is glorious, the rhythm of the words enter your soul. I love this, have done its jaap, homa and listened to it endlessly. (Doing its Homa/jaap especially during eclipses is quite fruitful). This is a very inadequate post on its meanings. Some are from the Laxmi tantra and some of them are my understanding. Everything is Shri.

Current Rahu/Ketu transit in Gemini/Sagittarius

This is a brief post on analysing transits. I have written a previous post on transits of Rahu/Ketu here. Now the recent transit (March 2019 to September 2020) of Rahu/Ketu into the 3rd/9th sign Gemini owned by Mercury and Sagittarius owned by Jupiter has already started giving startling events around the world. Gemini and Sagittarius are quite suitable environments for Rahu/ Ketu, some astrologers consider them exalted here. Thus their effects are going to be very intense and extreme. Rahu-Ketu work at the deepest levels, through sudden and unpredictable events.

Consider the world events and also your personal events which occurred 18 yrs ago, between 2000-2002. Go back in your life 18yrs to evaluate what had happened, what was its effect on you physically, emotionally and spiritually. Something similar will happen again.

The last time, 18yrs ago from July 2000 to Feb-2002, world events included, the dot-com bubble burst, Concorde flight crash and the company’s bankruptcy, launch of Wikipedia, first iPod launched by Apple, Mir space station brought down, the world’s first space tourist, hijacked planes, terrorist attacks on World Trade Center etc, deaths of thousands, thus mindset of the world changed permanently, a continuing ‘war on terrorism’ which strangely continues till date, Euro notes/coins entered public circulation as a powerful new currency, cyborg tech successfully developed, etc. So you had your Mercury, Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu keywords being reflected quite nicely back then, and somewhat similar things will happen now.

Rahu in Gemini, the natural 3rd house of the zodiac will cause the following, use the keywords and interlink them to get these readings.

  1. Rahu in the house of Mercury will cause anxiety, depression, addictions, suicidal thoughts and other psychological problems caused by ‘over-stimulation’ and ‘over-thinking’. Mercury is highly adaptable and responds to events quite successfully, but rapid and high intensity changes cause him to burn out.
  2. Increase in risky behaviour triggered in same-age groups causing accidents. E.g a same-age/family/friends group goes for an adventure trail, trek, picnic etc and gets into an accident.
  3. Teenagers are very impressionable individuals and under the influence of Rahu will be involved in risky activities maybe crime or drugs etc. Disguises and concealments. Parents/teachers unable to communicate effectively with their teenage kids.
  4. The flow of information, intelligence, database management, information analysis will be affected. In short there will be misinformation and misunderstandings on all levels. Cheating in financial sectors; banking sector will be hit with scams and cybercrime, people will lose trust in banks.
  5. Pollution caused by information networks will reach dangerous levels, this will include subtle radiation to discordant noises. The world will be a noisier place with all shouting for attention.
  6. Increase diseases related chest, heart and lungs. Also incurable and strange diseases will increase. Faulty diagnosis will increase and inappropriate medication given.

Rahu will conjunct Mars, both malefics during May-June 2019. Severe results again with Mars intensifying Rahu with his aggression, competitiveness, rage and high energy at all levels possible, tempers will remain high and will snap. e.g. wars, road rage, local fights, raised voices in the house etc. (Mars will aspect Ketu too during this period, thus fueling his energies too.)rahu ketu
Now Ketu in Sagittarius. Here we already have Saturn and he will move out into Capricorn in Jan 2020. So till then, Ketu and Saturn both malefics are together. Ketu has become even more powerful with extremely increased ability to give his ‘separative’ results. So be prepared for separations at every level, mental, physical spiritual. (Saturn will be aspecting Rahu during this period, adding to his energy, one result could be that people will take calculated risks.)

  1. Foundations of life for many will be shaken and torn apart. This may mean more divorces, or abandonment issues, teachers going rogue, students not learning etc. Priests/pandits will not perform well, and rituals done may not bear fruit. People will question established religions and rituals.
  2. These life shaking detachment type of events will turn several to internal spirituality. (more after Jan 2020 when just Jupiter and Ketu are together, Saturn moves on)
  3. Universities and institutes of higher learning, religious schools, monasteries etc will fail to perform or come into disrepute. Temples, monasteries etc may be physically demolished even.
  4. The patrons, peer groups and paternal figures will not cooperate, create tensions and abandon. Those who are supposed to guide will not. Guidance will come from inside only if people listen.
  5. If you have any pitr/ancestor related problems due, they can erupt. 9th sign is linked to them too.
  6. People will be disconnected from religion, humanitarian views, philosophy and will act selfishly and without fear of spiritual repercussions/Karma.
  7. Jupiter enters his own sign Sagittarius for 2 months, in Mar-April 2019 giving some relief. But he is moving forward/retrograde going back into Scorpio. However he will then transit into Sagittarius from Nov 2019 onwards giving his direction also to the headless Ketu and make the restrictions of Saturn a bit bearable.
  8. Feb 2020 – Mar 2020 will see Mars with Ketu so again a double dose of aggression and martian energies which will generally be misdirected (headless Ketu’s influence). Jupiter’s influence will be able to set things right sooner though.

These were very general readings. For analysing your own personal chart I have written about it in my earlier post. But here is a quick recap

  1. Your birth chart. Check out where Rahu is placed, which house, which sign and with which planets. He will link his ‘overreach and then fall on the face’, trend with each of their results too.
  2. If your birth chart has a complete or a partial kaal sarpa, the effects of Rahu/Ketu are more intensified.
  3. Check out which Mahadasha/Main period and antardasha/sub-period you are on. What are the general background influences that you can expect. If you are undergoing periods of Ketu or Rahu be careful. (Or Saturn, Mars or Sun, the natural malefics when they conjunct with Rahu/Ketu in transit together)
  4. Which houses in your chart are Rahu/Ketu occupying during their transit? i.e Where are Gemini/Sagittarius placed? This will tell you which karma you are going to be pulled towards/Rahu, and which aspects of life you are going to be separated from/Ketu.
    • (Ketu transiting in 4th house has caused deaths of the mother for 2 of my clients last year. For another, he sold off his ancestral farmlands).
    • (Rahu in 10th for one client ensured that his father came to live with him permanently etc)
  5. If your age is the multiples of 18 yrs, you will undergo Rahu/Ketu return where they occupy the same position as your birth chart. Extreme karmic events will unfold.
  6. Now during the overall 18 month Rahu/Ketu transit, there will be short term transits of the other planets, Sun, Moon etc. So look out for the eclipses and periods around them. They will change the results of Sun/Moon and depending on their positions in your transit chart give extreme results.
  7. The other planets will also transit over these Rahu/Ketu for shorter periods, so their results will also be affected by the Rahu/Ketu presence/conjunction. Especially be alert during the conjunction of malefics in transit.

Gemini and Sagittarius will obviously affected badly. Next intensity is for Cancer and Capricorn, these folks should take special care of their health. Scorpio and Taurus will also face typical times. If your ascendant falls in these signs you should take care of your physical body/environment, if the Moon falls in these then your emotional status will be out of balance. (These signs fall in the dushamsthana 6-8-12 axis from the transiting position of Rahu/Ketu).

In case there are problems, often a 108 repeat of the beej mantras of Rahu/Ketu on Tuesdays/Saturdays will help in balancing out their energies.

Gandant nakshatra, a bit about the remedies

I had written about the Gandant or Gandamool gap of the zodiac in a past post. There is a question on this, thus writing some more. Gandant affects the Moon or the ascendant degree. The closer to the gap the more severe the effects are.occultIn India, the new baby’s horoscope is seen after the 12th day. On the 12th day the Namakaran/naming ceremony is performed. Also, till this new living being is not named, a period called “naatak’ is observed. During this period, no puja/rituals can be performed in the family in which the birth has occurred. Now if there is a Gandant nakshatra seen in the child’s chart, a Nakshatra shanti puja should be performed at the earliest, within a month of the birth if possible. If the parents are unable for some reason (maybe the baby is not well and the parents are busy), the baby’s paternal grandparents or paternal uncle can be entrusted by the parents to perform it at the earliest possible auspicious timing/muhurt after the birth.

(Shanti puja is a ritual to calm down the agitation caused by the severe energies of the lunar mansion, a pandit/priest helps perform it.)

It is possible that the chart was never seen and the child grew up with whatever problems, later the parents came to know of the Gandant. Even then do the Nakshatra Shanti puja on the next convenient muhurt, do not think the time is lost. The energies of the puja will help the child now onwards at least. This puja can be repeated on every (vedic calendar) birth day.

Now it is possible that the chart was never seen, these pujas were never done and the child grew up, became an adult etc and then came a sub-period of Mercury or Ketu or the ascendant lord where the person started facing severe problems. One young man I know, has a severe Moon in Revati Nakshatra Gandant. He went to an astrologer and the person scared him by telling him that he will die in a few years. This is what I dislike about modern astrologers. Death may or not come, that is the future. Let’s focus on what can be done at the present moment! The correct advice in this case would be this,

  1. Do the nakshatra shanti puja at the earliest possible auspicious timing, it will help balance something at least.
  2. On every birth day (as per vedic calendar), do the same Nakshatra Shanti puja with the pandit/priest. Or do any of these pujas for longevity, good health and auspiciousness – Ayushya homa, Mahamrutyunjai homa, Navagraha Shanti puja,
  3. Or if cannot afford a priest do a Mahamryutunjai Homa by himself. It is a very simple fire ritual/homa, takes one hour to perform.
  4. Or cannot do this at all, cannot afford it or cannot find the resources, then recite the Mahamrutyunjai mantra 108 times at least one Monday every month.
  5. Or if has access to a vedic panchangam, and knows the Nakshatra which is Gandant, he can recite this Mahamrutyunjai mantra 108 times on that day of the month in which the transit moon occupies that same nakshatra in transit.

occultIn fact I would suggest for everyone to do this Mahamryutunjai Homa on auspicious days, birthdays, etc, whenever you feel like doing it. I had written about it earlier in some post, it will work for all health and longevity related issues. The homa basic post is linked here. The preparatory and concluding phases remain the same, for the mantra-phase use this mantra, at every ‘ swaha’ a drop of ghee is to be put in the fire.

“Om trayambakam yajamahe, sugandhim pushtivardhanam, Om haung, joong sah, maam mrutyur palaya palaya, rogan mochaya mochaya, ayur vardhaya vardhaya, Sah joong haung Om, ururvarukamiva bandhanat, mrutyur mukshiya maam amrutat, Mrutyunjayaya rudraya, neelkanthaya shambhave, amruteshaya sharvaya, mahadevaya taenamah Swaha”

(Or if you feel this variant to be quite complicated you can use this simple version “Om tryambakam yajamahe sungandhim pushti vardhanam uruvarukamiva bandhanat mrutyur mukshiya maam amrutat Om Swaha” for the mantra phase)

Birthdays are very important. On these 2 days every year you should really do something to recharge your energies. 2 days? yes, your birthday as per the solar calendar will be the same as your birthdate as per the English calendar (maybe one day before or after), on this day your sun will be in the same degree as it was the day you were born. And the second as per the lunar day, the exact degree in which your moon was in and the same sign your sun was in when you were born. These are the 2 days when your personal energies are resonating with the energies of the time you were born. So if you do some personal intense energy practice on this day, it will deeply repair and heal.

The Vedic calender

Astrology is the study of how we evolve through time. So here is a ‘definitions’ post on how we measure time in the Vedic system. We call our calendar Panchangam.

The zodiac is made of 360 degrees. We measure the arc of a circle in – degrees, minutes, seconds. Vedic astrology/astronomy follows the true zodiac in which we calculate the precession/wobbling/tilt of the poles/earth. This correction is called Ayanamsha. So Vedic mathematics is extremely accurate.

First the year/Samvatsara. There is a cycle of 60 years each of them have names. This 60 yrs is the nearest possible for 5 cycles of Jupiter transit + 2 cycles of Saturn transit to coincide. (Their cycles coincide at 60yrs, as Jupiter takes 12 yrs to travel around the zodiac and Saturn takes 30 yrs.) A Vedic year finishes when both Moon and Sun are together in the same degree in Meen/Pisces. The day after this, is the start of the new year.

Now there are two movements/Ayan of the Sun in this year. The apparent south ward movement of the Sun /Dakshinayan and the Uttarayan/North ward movement of the Sun. These are caused by the precession/tilt of the axis of the earth. The Uttarayan period of 6 months is generally considered more auspicious for any activity.

There are 12 months/Maas in a year, they have different names from Chaitra, Vaishakh, Jeyshta, Ashadh, Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashwin, Kartik, Margashirsh, Paush, Magh, Phalgun. Each of these end when the Sun and moon are together in a sign, i.e. they end on a no moon day/amavasya. We use both the solar year and the lunar year (luni-solar system) and the discrepancy between the two is adjusted every three years where a 13th month is added to the year. This 13th month is called the ‘Adhik maas’/extra month and is very good period for doing pujas and stuff.

(Solar month/Saur maas is when the Sun enters into a sign of the zodiac and then exits it. This day when it transits, is called the Sankranti (good forceful forward movement). Sankranti is generally on the 15th of every month when the Sun changes his sign.

The lunar month/Chandra maas is from one Amavasya/no moon day to the next. Those families who follow the strict rules related to time use this Lunar month for their day to day activities. When I use ‘day’, I mean lunar-day always.)

There are 6 seasons/Rutu in India. 2 months make up one season. Starting with Vasant/spring, Grishma/summer, Varsha/rains, Sharad/pleasant weather, Hemant/pre-winter, Shishir/winter.

Now the fortnights, the dark fortnight of the waning moon/Krishna paksha, and the bright fortnight of the waxing moon/Shukla paksha. (Depending on which sort of ritual you are performing, you choose the time. For rituals which are to bring increase , choose the shukla paksha And for rituals which intend decrease of something use the Krishna paksha period.)

Now the day/Vaar. The day starts with sunrise (not midnight) in Indian panchangams/calendars. There are 7 days, from Ravivar/Sunday, Somvar, Mangalvar, Budhavar, Guruvar, Shukravar to Shanivar/Saturday.

Now one Lunar day in context of the movement of the Sun and the Moon is called a Tithi, When the moon completes  12 arc degrees of its movement with reference to the Sun, it is a Tithi/ Hindu lunar day. There are fourteen tithis in each fortnight, then one Amavasya/no moon and one Purnima/Full Moon in each month. Thus there are 30 tithis in a lunar month. (The starting and ending of a Tithi depends upon the degree of the Moon from that of the Sun. Thus a Tithi can start or end at any time in a day.)

Now the half lunar day is called a Karan. Karan is ½ of the Moon Phase day/Tithi and have different names. One Karan period is when the Moon travels 6 degrees arc in reference to the Sun. There are four types of Fixed Karanas as they occur once in a month. And there are seven types of recurring Karans and they each repeat eight times during the lunar month.

Then Yog. There are 27 types of Yog in a sequence from Vishakhamba to Vaidhriti. This is another mathematical calculation, the degrees of the Sun and the Moon in the sky are added then divided by 13°20′. The Yog are in a sequence, so if the quotient is 1 and the remainder is 2deg 3 sec it means that the 1st Yog Vishakhamba has elapsed and the 2nd yog in sequence Priti is on.

The Nakshatra of the day is the one in which the Moon is in during the Sunrise. There are 27 Nakshatra/Lunar mansions each of 13 arc degrees 20 seconds in width. (The moon takes approx 28 days to cover the entire zodiac so an extra small nakshatra arc named ‘Abhijit’ is used as a correction factor. It has spiritual implications in Jyotish.)

The current Rashi/zodiac sign is the one which is occupied by the Moon at sunrise. There are 12 signs and the Moon takes about 2.25 days to transit one sign.

(Your software, even the phone app mentions these details for the day if you want to know)time 23So, for pujas/rituals or for telling someone my birth day in the Vedic system, I will tell the day as per the Panchangam, I will use the names of the Tithi/Lunar day, Paksha/fortnight, Maas/month and Samvatsara/year to define it.

The most basic  are 5 (panch) components (angam), of time, Panchangam.
1. Day of Week/ Vaar
2. Nakshatra (Lunar mansion in which Moon is transiting)
3. Tithi (moon phase)
4. Karana (half a lunar day)
5. Yoga (a calculation for the distance separating the Sun and Moon)

As per Vedic Astrology, it is required to say out aloud the name of these 5 elements in the morning.
• Saying the Vaara (Day of the Week) will help enjoy longevity
• Saying the Nakshatra (Lunar mansion the Moon is in) will help dissolve karmas
• Saying the Tithi (Moon Phase name) will help one enjoy prosperity
• Saying the Yoga will help in keeping miseries away
• Saying the Karan will help in getting desires fulfilled.

This was the very basic stuff taught to me as a child. For astrologers, ‘time’ is a function of the movements of the Sun and the Moon.

Maa and Sanskrit

I am from coastal India, used to live right next to the sea but now I live in the Himalaya, I look outside the window now and I see oak forests. Here people speak Hindi and the word that they use for their mother is ‘maa’. Having learnt Sanskrit since I was a child, ‘maa’ for me is negation, ‘no’. ‘Maa kuru’ is ‘do not do it’. ‘Maa gaccha’ is ‘do not go’. It sounds very strange to hear children addressing their mothers ‘maa’. Why would an entire population call their mothers ‘No’? I asked a local pandit and he said ‘we call the Devi maa so the mother is maa’ or something quite confusing, he was not sure himself.

All languages are derived from Sanskrit. Devbhasha Sanskritam is in-built, its sounds and the way its letters are written are created by the perfect movement of pran/vital energy/kundalini along the Brahamnadi around the energy vertices/Chakra of your body. To those who can see, it is so visible, for those who cannot see it yet, best try to see your aura as the beginning step.

In Sanskrit, the mother is called Mata.

  • ‘Ma’ sound means the act of Creation, creating Illusions, hiding something and also the knowledge related to the Hidden.
  • ‘Aa’ means the one who directs, heals, removes sorrow etc linked to Ma.
  • ‘Ta’ means the depths of hidden darkness, that which is not illuminated as yet and the strength and power of flowing energy.
  • ‘Aa’ is again the one who directs, heals, removes sorrow etc now linked to Ta.

So a mother/mata in Sanskrit means so much more, which cannot be fully described. But the terrible intensity of Maa is tempered by the Taa sound. The intensity of ‘maa’ is in fact kept hidden by the ‘taa’ sound. Thus for the human mother, Mata is better.

Now ‘Maa’ is actually a name for the Devi. She hides, creates illusions and later grants its knowledge too. It is mentioned in the Shri Sukta, shlok/verse 3, one of the attributes of Devi is ‘Maa’. (Laxmi tantra has a very extensive chapter on Shri Sukta.) Devi is the energy of the Ultimate Consciousness/Parabrahma which is used to create the Universes. We all are the Ultimate ourselves, temporarily here to enjoy the fun-fair of Creation. This Devi/Illumination, energy is considered feminine as it creates, the cosmic mother. She has used the Maa attribute of Herself to conceal the true nature of every soul/Jivatma here. The energy of Maa is negation, and it negates our true nature, temporarily. She is Maa in all possible ways,

  • मिमी – The action of formation or creation using precise measures.
  • मीया – The act where Creation is fixed
  • मिति – The one who pervades everything. Everything that we see is produced from Her, the creative power of the Ultimate.

Now when you are done playing and want to remember your reality, re-experience yourself, what happens? The power of Creation, Devi, uses her attribute of negation, ‘Maa’, now to negate the bindings of karma and her own initial binding of Kundalini to release the Jivatma. Thus you realise your true self. Here is two negations making a positive.

The energy of the sound Maa is so vast and indescribable, it was used to make you forget your true nature. Now when you start your spiritual practice and want to realise yourself again, Maa then negates your human existence, it disconnects you from the manifested. (Addressing the human mother as ‘maa’, though very prevalent in North India, is not a good idea from the energy of the sound/intention point of view.)

‘Om Maayai namah’ is a mantra from the Shri sukta which grants all that you desire.

Maa is Devi, magnificent in Her power of Negation.devi 4

Balancing karma from the ancestors

Sometimes I think we learn the deepest lessons through negative examples. You do not get the love of a mother, so the lesson is to understand how it feels like and learn. So that when you become a mother yourself, you decide that you cannot let your child feel that same ‘non-love’ as you did.

Can you rise above your personal bad experience and give better to others? This is the final test.ancestorsI have seen several examples in my practice where children were ignored or bullied by their parents and there was no one who believed them. These children grew up with deep seated traumas. Accepting that parental neglect is the root of the present problem is very difficult. Especially in Indian society where we consider our parents divine. So here are a few ways..

  1. Let go emotionally. Take care of them as per your personal sense /conscience and do your duty as a child, maybe take them to a doctor etc. But forgive them (read this) and emotionally stop expecting love from them. They have failed in their duty as a mother/father, but you should not fail in your duty as a child in their old age. Else this cycle will continue in your next life too. Do that much for them as much as your conscience requires. Remember you are doing this so that you can set yourself free.
  2. Transfer your longing and emotions for a mother/father to your favourite deity/Universe or your higher Self. You are your own mother/father. Understand that you have taken birth because of your own wishes. These parents are for this one life time. You have been born so many times, you have had so many parents. You yourself are your own creator. Your actions/karma have given birth to you.
  3. Love yourself, you are the Ultimate yourself. But now go out and buy that icecream, the one your mom never brought for you, and as you eat it feel the satisfaction. Give yourself gifts, tiny indulgences which you wanted as a child. You might think you are an adult now what will you do with a pack of stickers? But holding those stickers in your hand will heal.
  4. If you know Reiki you can use the sequence, Hon sha zhe sho nen, cho ku re, dia ko mu, sei hi ki, dia ko mu, cho ku re, Hon sha zhe sho nen, to go back in time/space and love your self as a child. Use sei he ki strongly to love and relax your child self. Do this before you sleep for 21 days.
  5. If you do not know Reiki then just relax, think of your child self, visualise picking up that child, kissing it, telling it that its all ok and you love it. This may sound silly but it helps, on a very deep level. The simplest things work. Do this for 21 days.
  6. And finally enjoy your own child’s childhood with him. Do all those tiny things you wanted your mom/dad to do with you. And as your child laughs with joy, feel the happiness within you. You have aced your test! You are a good parent, your child loves you and you have broken the cycle of karma.

ancestorsYou take birth in a family, as a ‘soul group’ to clear off the karma together. There is always some karma linked to the mother/father/ancestors. And we are all rebalancing continuously. When someone goes against his own conscience and commits crimes like abusing and torturing living beings, being intentionally cruel, stealing, cheating, lying, breaking up relationships, etc very high intensity ‘moral wrongs’, it lays very severe bindings on the soul. The Karma has been created by actions so deeply against the Dharm that he has suffer through a portion of the misery that he has inflicted on others and then only some can be repaid by mantra and other energy. These are called pitr dosha/problems due to ancestors. If you are going through a rough patch and you chance upon some ritual that makes sense to you, maybe it is time. Now to rebalance and for the finishing touch.

This is ‘Tarpan vidhi’, is done by the men, the oldest male in the family does this, not women. You repay the energy due to your ancestors using the mantras of the Tarpan. The most effective way of rebalancing pitr related karma. In doing so the mantras act upon your own astral self and set things right within you too. If you are a woman suffering in such a family, when your husband/father/brother/son does this Tarpan, the energy is transferred to you too. The best is to go to Brahmakapal, Badrinath, Uttarakhand, India and do a Tarpan Vidhi. There are several pandits there who specialise in this type of ritual. There are other places too in India which are well-known for this ritual, but the best is Brahmakapal, the river Sarasvati flows here very briefly before it vanishes as a undersurface flow. This can be done at any time during the year. If you cannot travel so far then you can contact your local pandit and perform it at the nearest place with flowing water or the seashore.

If this is also not possible and you are sure of the power of your thought and intention, you can do this brief ritual yourself during the Mahalaya Amavasya/no moon day (will be in Sept/Oct, both Sun and Moon in Virgo as per Vedic calendar).

  • For the man of the house, take a coconut, remove the husk so that it looks like this, a small tuft left at the place where it has its ‘eyes’. It should have water in it, shake it to check. Keep it in your altar/puja ghar, put some flowers, turmeric, vermillion etc on it, pray to your favourite deity and your higher self, request help. Intend sincerely, very strongly that karma gets balanced. Face south, hold it in your hands, pray to your ancestors and then dash the coconut on the ground so that it breaks. It requires strength and it has to break in one dash. Do not eat this, dispose it in some place, under some tree where no one will step on it or in the water .
  • cocnut.jpg
  • Then cook food, the woman of the house has to do this, one dish made of pumpkin, one kheer (rice/milk/sugar – dish), one-curd/rice and any other vegetarian items that you can cook with your hands. Lay these offerings on a banana leaf/or a clean dish with a cup of water in the open. Face south, pray to your ancestors and sprinkle some black sesame seeds on it. Request your ancestors to have this food/energy and then leave this Martya-lok/our dimension and go to their Pitra-lok. Intend disconnection, turn back, do not look at the dish and come inside your house.
  • Black ravens come to eat this food charged with these energies never other birds. If black ravens eat it your work is done.
  • (If there is any other ritual in your culture where you offer food/energy etc to your ancestors, perform that too.)

If you dream of your ancestors who have passed away, you recognise them from the photographs or they tell you their name in your dreams. Or you see black ravens around your house. It is a message from the ancestors. In this case, the easiest option is making a chapati or a ball of raw kneaded wheat dough mixed with jaggery and feeding this to a cow with your hands.

Now the other way, doing charity, both men and women can do this. I have written about this in my earlier posts. E.g. distribute sweets/fruits at an orphanage, stand in the background anonymously and observe the caretakers distributing the food to the children. Be compassionate, intend happiness for these children in hard circumstances, bless them with your heart and come away. Thus you will also heal.

And finally do some pujas, auspicious rituals, fire rituals, anything in which your entire family is involved. e.g the Bhagwat katha, Satyanarayan puja, Chandi Homa, Rudrabhishek, etc. These are positive energies and general pandits can do it easily. Do this in your house so that the energy from the mantras enters your house and cleans off the negativity.

Now how about some spiritual practice for yourself? At least 15 mins a day? You can recite the Gayatri mantra 108 times. Or do Dhyan. Or even self-reiki, or surround yourself with pran? I have written about so many tiny activities you can do, just do some practice regularly everyday. Give yourself these 15 mins so that you can heal yourself deeply.

Karma from the ancestors

The ‘family’ related houses in your horoscope are

the 2nd house – the actual family in which you have been born, its status in society, the wealth and power wielded by your family. Also the ways you will contribute by your own actions of hoarding and accumulating treasure. (If you are adopted or fostered or put in a boarding school or at some relative’s house or for some reason separated from your birth family you should also check out the 9th house.) Venus is the natural ruler of this house and subtly contributes to the dignity and benefits from this house, so analyse Venus, his position and power in the chart. If he is with malefics/benefics, if placed in a difficult house, the planets aspecting/conjoint him, is he retrogradecombust etc.

the 3rd house – the siblings, brothers/sisters and the cousins in general. Also your boldness in conducting yourself in these affairs of the the extended family. This is a function of Mercury in the case of siblings, he is also the natural ruler of the 3rd house of the zodiac. And Mars in the case of specifically brothers.

the 4th house – the mother, everything to do with your emotional comforts and security in all ways. The Moon is the agent of the mother so do analyse his placement and position. If he is placed in the dushamstan i.e. 6th, 8th, 12th. Or with malefics, natural or temporary. Also if he is debilitated or eclipsed or in a Gandant. I have seen cases where Moon was placed badly and the children suffering quite severely because of the mother.

the 5th house – the children, of the DNA or of the soul, and all the ways you pass on your creativity. The natural ruler of this house is the Sun so check out his power to give results in the horoscope. Do you have the divine intelligence and inspiration to carry on your legacy by producing offspring?

the 7th house – the husband or wife, your Dharm-pati or Dharm-patni. This is marriage the Vivah Sanskar, and in Vedic context of Jyotish requires a man and a woman. This directly leads to production of children of your DNA. In the case of a person’s union with the spiritual self, this house will lead to the production of the children of the soul. The natural planets connected to this house are Mars, Venus and Jupiter.

the 9th house – the ancestors, the father-like figures in your life who support and guide you in your life. The real teacher/Guru who makes you dwij/twice-born. This is the domain of Jupiter.

the 10th house – the father and everything to do with this one person in your life. There have been cases where a bad father has caused trauma to his children. Also the Sun is naturally linked to this house. However the natural owner of this house is Saturn thus influences this house wherever he may be placed.

These are the closest relations who make up your family. Your personal karma is linked to your heredity, to all the ancestors, so if your birth time is absolutely precise, the divisional chart 12 will give you your answers. Analyse the position of the mother and the father from the D-12 chart to know about the specific karma linked to your mother’s and father’s family. If you are inclined, you can go in-depth using the D-40 for the mother’s family and the D-45 for the precise karma linked to the father’s side of the family. Your personal individual karma is seen from D-60.familyFirst analyse is 9th house, the house of foundations or Bhagya/fortune. Now the 1st house is the 5th house counted from the 9th, thus your manifested physical body, life and social standing etc is an expression of the actions/inspiration/intelligence of the agents of the 9th house. Your ancestors/pitr, you carry their genes, their culture, their property/assets, their name in the society etc. If there are problems in the 9th house they will cause serious impacts on your entire existence. I have written on how to completely analyse a house in your horoscope earlier so try it with the 9th house of the chart.

The Dharma trikon is mainly affected so analyse your ascendant/1st house then your 5th house. Your existence is derived from your ancestors and your children are derived from you and then you become an ancestor to your children, it is cyclic.

Most of these karmic effects relate to the ‘fortune’, marriage and children. These include susceptibility to magic, nightmares, possession by spirits. Then late marriages or multiple marriages, divorces, impotency. Further abortions, miscarriages, disabled children, death of young children, no sons. Mental problems, suicides, diseases with no cures, addictions etc. Children getting married to unsuitable men/women, running away, or getting widowed in young age, or having multiple affairs, falling into prostitution, getting involved in ‘moral crimes’ which go against the conscience. Legal issues and complications in courts. Fights and ill-will within the family members etc.

If you see any family with such events, the charts of the people will show some common points. Significantly strong malefics in the 9th, 1st or 5th houses. The most potent combination is Rahu/Ketu in these houses with some other malefic force giving them direction. Then more malefic influences on the other houses depending on which problems they are going through. e.g. If someone is going through a karmic linked disease, the 8th house will be further affected. If he has lost property because of litigations, the 4th and 7th will be further damaged. If he is not getting a stable income and loss of status in profession/society is the 10th house etc.

Most of these issues are caused due to ‘family curses’, or more appropriately some karma which was supposed to be done by or for the ancestor which is pending. Most commonly it is that funeral rites were not performed thus the soul is trapped on earth. This can be truly disastrous, sometimes ancient houses are haunted. Or some ancestor did some terrible thing/negative karma for which the entire generation is suffering. Maybe murdered someone, I have seen this the husband killed the wife a few generations ago and there were problems for the present generation. Or something which was due but was not repaid by some ancestor. familyBut this is not the whole story.

Why should you suffer because of some mistake your ancestor did? In fact you dont! You are suffering because of your own Karma, you created some negative karma like, aborting a child, not performing funeral rites for someone you were required to, not repaying things which you should have, committed suicide, raped someone, prostituted someone, produced children and then did not acknowledge them, abandoning your parents or wife/husband, or someone dependant on you, misused your knowledge to harm someone, even trapped spirits to use them against their will, in short did something so deep, so much against your Dharm, that in this life you have sealed off the gentler means of balancing karma.

Your own conscience/Antaratma judged you and you are now being made to go through the same thing yourself. When you have endured a significant portion of the karma, you will be given the chance to balance off the remaining through pujas/mantra/charity etc the energy route.

The 9th house not only represents the ancestors but it is all that you are going to receive in your current life because of the actions from your past lives, good bad or indifferent.

(Will continue in my next post)

familyThis is in response to this comment I received in the Contact page, “Dear astrologer-by-default,
I love reading your posts and there’s so much to learn! Can you write about ancestral trauma and parental wounds…how they influence our life and ways to heal them? Thanks in advance.”
