The energy of Kesh or Hair

I have always found the Cossack hairstyle fascinating. They retain a lock of hair at the Vama bindu. The Hindu also retains this same lock of hair. The Cossack pulls the tuft upwards and the Hindu ties it at the back of the head. Our hair are our connect with subconscious. Something like an antenna, they are linked to intuition and emotional memory. And there are certain ways in which we can use them to enhance our personal energy and power. Doing actions mindfully is a way of channelling the Universal power. Hinduism teaches how to do this. Sanatan dharma is all about learning to live in resonance with this eternal consciousness.

The shikha hairstyle is compulsory for all Hindu boys. This lock of hair is kept uncut from the thread ceremony/yadnyopavit at the age of 6yrs onwards for the entire lifetime. This shikha indicates that the young boy has now entered society and has started his education. After his education, he has 2 options, either he will marry and enter Gruhasta life, become a house holder. Or he will completely shave his head and enter Sanyas, leave the society and live as a Sanyasi.

Astrologically hair is connected to Saturn. And certain activities related to hair are used as an astrological remedy for channeling Saturn’s power. For example if you have a heavy Saturn in your chart, then applying oil regularly to your hair will act to pacify him. And this is the exact reason that we Indians apply hair oil. It is an astrological remedy which has been smartly ingrained into our culture.

Women generally keep long hair, and this is linked to their feminity, their sixth sense and ensures their access to the subconscious mind. She channelises creativity with her long hair style. A woman who keeps long hair is perceived as being more feminine and she actually is. Men with their short cropped hairstyles are perceived as being more direct, decisive and manly. And men who want to show off or enhance their artistic sides generally keep long hair.

In India, marriage is often arranged on the basis of compatibility, family, society, finances, horoscope, nature etc are matched and then the young man and woman decide to get married. One of my clients, a young woman, was unable to settle on a suitable alliance. She had had several proposals but somehow they did not result in the marriage. Her horoscope was good, she was well settled, etc, ideal candidate. But she had her hair in a severe short ‘masculine hair cut’ and exuded a typical male hardness. No wonder prospective matches would reject the alliance. I told her to grow out her hair to at least a “short step cut”. And within the next 6months she got married to a suitable young man.

The US army had done a research during the Vietnam war. They recruited native American young men as jungle trackers. But when they were put in uniform in a military style hair cut they strangely lost their tracking skills. Native American men traditionally keep very long hair. Long hair kept unbound can be used to sense the presence of other energies. Indian sadhus also keep long hair, and maintain them in typical ways. I also keep my hair unbound when I have to do certain energy work. Keeping hair unbound allows the energy of the body to go ‘free’. You are able to access ‘things’ more easily. But for this time you are also more susceptible to attacks by negative entities. There are people who are mediums for the spirits. They keep their hair unbound, never cut them.

One of my clients was suffering from tremendous ill-will from her parents, I checked her horoscope and also with my Thoth tarot before giving her a solution. And she was married so my conscience also was ok with this. On a Saturday/Tuesday evening, I told her to sit in front of her puja ghar, face east/north, cut one strand of her hair herself and clip one nail, place both on a small piece of paper, burn everything completely and then carefully take the ashes out in a open space and release them in the wind. The intention was that the link of DNA between her and her parents should be sealed and their ill wishing should not reach her anymore. It was a sad thing to do but was essential for both her and her parents welfare.

A baby’s hair are never cut, but complete removal of the hair or tonsure is done before the first birthday or the third birthday. This is the Keshkhandan Sanskar. Sanskar in Sanskrit means the right action which creates the most appropriate form. The hair which was present on the head represents the linked karmas from the life dependent on the mother. These are shaved off completely to ‘refresh’ the energy. This is done for both baby boys and baby girls. This is the only time in the entire life that a female’s head is shaved off completely.

However there are families where the baby girl’s head is not shaved completely. Just a small lock of hair is cut as a token during the puja. So the woman carries the same hair energy from birth to death. If such a woman does pujas sincerely, she will be able to develop her intuition to a very high degree. She will be able to channel her subconscious mind intensely.

For males there are 2 more occasions where the head is shaved off completely, during the funeral rites/ Anteyshti Sanskar of the father and the mother. For a male the funeral rites are very intense mantras and intentions. The death of a father or a mother represents a very big break for him and now he has to take on the responsibilities of the house. So as he shaves his head, he reduces the intensity of the emotional memories of the past linked karmas with the dead parent.

Hair is extremely important and cutting hair or shaving the head is not just a styling thing but has a spiritual component too. If you are feeling a sense of negativity in your life or want to forget an incident which had an emotional impact on you, get your hair cut. In fact on the next Amavasya, cut off a few strands with your own hands with the intention that you are cutting off all emotional hurt and all negative energy. Throw those few cut strands in the winds not in the trash bin.

Do every action mindfully, with an awareness. Hair and every other physical object has its own energy aspects too. Utilise the concepts of energy actively to live a happier and more prosperous life.

Is it fine if the head is not shaved off during funeral rites? Is there any negative impact on the soul and living person?

      Hi there
its best if the person who actually performs the anteyshti and the tarpan etc gets his hair removed, it helps ‘reformat’ his mindset and he performs everything with more focus rather than getting caught in emotions.

    Hi Mam,

thanks for this. Could you also share your views on facial hair/beard for men? Does it also makes one more intuitive/reflective or help in the spiritual journey?

    Hi Mam,

As Amavasya is approaching, I was re-reading this article and have two queries where I seek your guidance:

    1) Exercise of burning one strand of hair and nail: could you throw some light if one aspiring to delink himself from past and dead Pitri’s do this? Can this have a negative impact on the relationship with living + loving parent?

    2) Amavasya exercise of cutting hair strands: do we need to face a particular direction? Also, can we think of more than one incident that has had a negative impact and do this exercise.

    Grateful as always!
